Earlier on Wednesday, the Pre-Nominations were announced for the 43rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards in the daytime drama performer categories.  Daytime fans and pundits quickly reacted to the omission of The Bold and the Beautiful’s Karla Mosley, who was front and center in 2015 in soaps most daring and socially relevant storyline.

On The Bold and the Beautiful, Karla plays Maya Avant who viewers learned last year was a trans woman, originally born as “Myron”.  Mosley’s performance was heralded throughout many twist and turns of Maya’s storyline.  However, not enough of the Emmy voters chose Karla’s work to pass her through to the blue ribbon round of voting in the Lead Actress catetory Emmy Pre-Nom reel’s are up to 4 minutes in length and can conclude scenes from up to two episodes, so as they say it’s all in the reel and the reaction of her peers that vote.

The talented actress, who many thought was shoo-in for a Lead Actress final slot, shared her reaction when throughout the day people commmented on social media about her being off the final ballot.

Karla related via Twitter, “I am so humbled – to tears, really – by the beautiful outpouring of love from fans (& even and some friendly foes) today. #HeartFull”

So, what do you think about Karla Mosley being out of the running in the Lead Actress field? What did you think about her note via social media to her fans and colleagues following the outpouring of support shown to her?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

I think it sucks. She is an excellent actress. I am very unhappy. Looks like I will be boycotting this award show as well. In fact, the last few years of the daytime emmys have been terrible at best. I will still watch my soaps but long for the day when the fans get to select the best

I agree the fans should be the ones to vote and nominate, I’m sure there would be a way different outcome.
I never liked Maya when she was trying to get Rick away from Caroline. I do have to admit she is a good actress.

The Bold and The Beautiful created a great character with amazing writing and Karla Mosley brought Maya to life in her emotions and depth she added to the character. It is a subject which is more and more in the news. I am stunned Karla did not get the nod. I would have bet my last cent on her receiving a nomination. Boo to the members who did not put her on the pre-ballot. I know Karla must be hurt but as always, she is handling this with dignity and respect for her profession. Know that we love you and your talent Karla. hugs

Maya is such an UNLIKABLE character that I’m not surprised at her omission. In fact, the entire storyline, including the introduction of Maya’s family, has not been a riveting storyline for me.
NOTE…this is MY opinion, so if you don’t agree, that’s your right, as this is mine.
The whole transgender story has been nothing but a ratings ploy, and not that well told. If they had REALLY wanted to do it right, they would have used an ACTUAL transgender woman to tell the story. I doubt very much if “Rick” would have so willingly gone to bed with a true-to-life tran.

I agree I think there should have been a mental illness storyline with aly

The character being unlikable is irrelevant. It’s about Karla Mosley’s performance as Maya, the character.

The performance as the maya character was not strong enough to win her a nomination.

Amen. Some people don’t know the difference.

Agree with you 100% – if everyone on the show is so proud of this transgender story, why didn’t they get a real transgender to play the part? They instead used the trans story to try and whitewash the months of awful behavior and bullying Maya (and Rick) did.

The actor who plays Rick has said how he is grateful and proud to be part of this ‘love story’, but would he be saying that if he had to do kissing scenes and love scenes with an actual trans person instead of a woman?

I totally love this show, but I do agree with you. This storyline has a lot of issues. I think the actors have done the best they could with the material provided to them.

The bottom line is what did Tracy Bergman and Eileen Davidson do this last year to put them in Lead Actress. JFP up to her old nauseating tricks. Here is how it should have went down for Lead Actress Kristian Alsfonso Karla Mosley Becky Herbst Sharon Case Melody Thomas Scott. Enough said !

Sorry I spelled Alfonso wrong my apologies!

Stop the politics we get enough of that in Washington

Melody Thomas is nominated every year, no matter if she had a decent storyline or not. Why is that? I like her portrayal as Nikki Newman, but I think a nomination EVERY YEAR is way past ridiculous, when an actress of Karla Mosley’s talent is snubbed. What’s wrong, Nominating Committee? Don’t have the guts to nominate THE daytime drama performance of the year? Cowards.

I agree with you 1 zillion percent!

Just to be clear, I was agreeing with SZima! Melody is an amazing actress and she is portrayed age appropriately & also has her hair and clothes appropriate for her age & status unlike someone who shall remain nameless & emmy nom-less Karla did not make anyone feel for her or shed a tear. She did not hit the mark of emmy worthy-ness. The script she was given had major holes and left people mad as all get out. The s/l was horrible. An embarrassment to the transgender community. Had it been written correctly & portrayed correctly, the former abreva girl might have gotten a nom. JMO

I was shocked I will be honest I really thought she would get a nomination I am not crazy about the storyline but she did play her heart out I was hoping she and Becky from GH would get a nod. Oh well like I have said they just collect dust. lol

I expected Karla to be nominated. Some of the nominees barely had airtime and some no real story at all. The SL was ground-breaking and her performance was moving.

I do not believe anyone was ”snubbed”
They simply didn’t like whoever and liked whomever more..
That is what happens when people judge people, it gets personal to their tastes/likes what they see as good, is personal choice ..

Karla was given a very sensitive role to play and she played it to the hilt. She should be very proud of her role portrayal. Unfortunately, the popularity of transgender storylines are not daytime mainstream as of yet. They really have only been popular on non mainstream broadcasting channels. Kudo’s to her for her brilliant work on a sensitive subject. It hasn’t gone unnoticed.

The fact that Maya is such a controversial character – fans either LOVE or HATE her – and Karla has helmed B&B throughout most of 2015, it is downright shocking that she did not receive a nod for her work. It’s the first time I have watched a black actress lead on a soap opera and she couldn’t be acknowledged? Yes, I know that Debbie Morgan was nominated for Lead Actress but that was before my time. This snub by the daytime emmy committee is VERY TELLING and communicates a very loud and clear message to minority women.

I don’t know why everything needs to be made into a race-based issue. Maybe the nominating committee simply didn’t think her material was a good as some of the other material submitted.

“…It’s the first time I have watched a black actress lead on a soap opera ”

Hi Sheryl :

Thank You for sharing a thought provoking post.

as a gay man… I’m still reeling from DAYS complete obliteration of gay character… that…. 3 years running… Emmy’d this show.. was celebrated and lauded for diversity

now… as much as i’m still enjoying the resurgence of DAYS… it’s a glaring fact that a part of DAYS energy is long gone… and not forgotten by the audience

I am still hoping DAYS will turn this around and give Paul Narita a storyline.

ie: there is such a high suicide rate with Transgender

I appreciate that Bill Bell steps up to the plate and features all sects of life.

I really like your last sentence…

I’ve always shared… the African American and LGBT are the last two “minorities” to share equal footing

I don’t watch B&B ; but fully supported Karla Mosely… and took it for granted.. that she’d be a shoo in.

oy!

I celebrate her strong performance… it says something about how fine an actress she is… when a family is added to support her … YES!

PS ! I love Debbie Morgan… I wish Days would hire her

That transgender story sucked. It wasn’t a good storyline at all.

Not good!

AGREE!

I feel for the actress, even though I don’t like the fact that they made her character transgender the actress always brings it.

She was not snubbed. Karla is a fantastic actor but the material was just not there. Not every character gets the material that ensures them an Emmy nom. Sorry. She did a great job with what she was given but tit just wasn’t enough.

She should have gotten a nomination whether or not some fans think it’s a ratings grabber. That’s not the issue; should Karla have been nominated is! Yes, she should have been!

I disagree. She got what was fair based on her acting.

Agree Lexii!

Karla is a great actress but the fact that Maya is such a unlikable character is probably why she wasn’t nominated had Maya been a nicer person maybe it would have made a difference. The transgender sl wasn’t appealing to many viewers it was a ratings ploy by Bell jumping on the Bruce Jenner bandwagon . If Bell wanted to educate viewers about transgenders then he should have done a documentary and aired in on one of the educational channels and should have used a real transgender instead of Karla who’s character is already the most despised on daytime television.

woah !

“…Karla who’s character is already the most despised on daytime television. ”

not even !

that character belong; is Carly on GH ; Summer on Y&R ; or Jennifer on DAYS

I think we have some back biting on the set anyone remember when Brad Bell said she was his new leading lady. Trust me this is all political as evident by people that were nominated that no way belonged there.

Though the writing wasn’t the best Karla Ansley drove home every episode! I don’t believe this was a race issue but an issue of the topic of storyline and/or clueless people judging!

Karla Mosley, I hate auto correct!

I think it was a combination of race and storyline. If they give her a nom that means the producers might go searching for more black actresses or more transgender people. These people who vote have been in the business many, many years and know exactly what they’re doing. Take a look at who was nominated and tell me that half of those women belong there and then tell me why? The same meaningless storylines involving those nominated are told over and over again but something FRESH and NEW and delivered so professionally and talented by Karla Mosley is overlooked. It’s a D shame and a D turn OFF! I’m done….I can’t pretend to enjoy something that only represents a 1/4 of what America looks like. Felicia OUT!

Haters can say what they want (you know who you are) but Karla Mosley turned out multiple emmys reels during this storyline. Reality check to people who say she wasn’t snubbed well she most definitely was snubbed. Karla was incredible in that storyline even people who are not fans of the characters realise that the Maya storyline was the best Storyline of 2015. This was the one actress that pretty much everyone that was tuned into the daytime world believed would get a nomination at least so the fact that she couldn’t even get a pre-nomination is disgusting. However Karla handled the situation with alot of grace & class. Which made me admire her even more

B&B has been so bad in recent years, this is the one actress and storyline that I have enjoyed between all the Liam Spencer crappy triangles. It’s criminal that she didn’t even get a pre-nom.

I forgot about her. Yes, she should have been nominated.

I am very confused by the prenoms, but all it takes is one episode.

I thought the race for Best Actress was going to be between Karla Mosley and my pick for Best Actress of 2015 Kassie DePaiva (Eve, Days Of Our Lives). I would have preferred for both to be nominated on the final ballot and may the best (according to the BRP) win. I’m not sure why the panel didn’t like her work? Too subtle? Too different? It’s a real mystery! I do wish Mary Beth Evans, Tracey E. Bregman and Eileen Davidson had all submitted in the Supporting Actress category where they belong, and that would have opened up a slot for newcomer Mosley (MBE and Kate Mansi are the only two new actresses in the prenominations for Best Actress).

But I do wonder why Jacob Young submitted in the Supporting Actor category when it was just as much his storyline as well as hers? He really belongs in lead.

B&B only got 4 of the prenominees through (the younger acting categories are automatic prenominations). Only Thorsten Kaye, Linsey Godfrey, Darin Brooks and Jacob Young made it in, which is really surprising. Happy Days did so well, but unhappy that Y&R over-performed (18 out of 40 slots is almost 50%. Y&R is the 3rd best acted soap, Days is #1, and GH is #2).

We will see if B&B writes anything Emmy worthy for Karla Mosley in the future. She doesn’t have much of a story right now, but then can change quickly on daytime. I bet she will figure in our Goldies balloting! (:

Wasn’t she Evangeline on OLTL? A GREAT actress! But not everyone can be nominated every time. She is beautiful, talented and classy, so I’m sure she will be nominated one day.

So sad.

No, a different actress was Evangeline. Kara Mosley was on “Guiding Light” until its cancellation. She was the love interest of Lawrence St. Victor’s character on GL, and now they are both on B&B.

GMAMFB! This was just one of many HATED BS S/l’s that Bell & his script recyclers came up with. Karla’s performance was NOT emmy worthy. In fact the actors, writers & s/l made a mockery of the whole transgender community and this was a total embarrassment. The emmy committee has spoken and I totally agree with them. Mr. Fairman, we all know who pays your salary or a chunk of it for your biased B&B blog. Maybe you should take time and actually watch the show which is awful, might I add, and not just write what that person tells you too. I see this page as B Bell saying WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! There were no fans and pundits outraged unless you count KM’s one fan page which isn’t many in the millions of so called people you all claim watch this trashy show. And as for hearalding, um, I think it was more outrage. Kudo’s again, to the emmy committee.

:: Bravo:: claps loudly

Mr. Fairman is equally supportive of all the soaps, as far as I can tell. If anything, I think General Hospital gets the most love — but that’s to be expected, when you look at the replies, GH posts tend to get the most!

No idea whom gets payed how. But I agree with the rest of this comment.

I agree that entire transgender sl was an insult to the real transgender community and having Karla do that role just shows that Bell was looking for shock value to increase his lagging ratings if he really wanted to educate the public then he should have used a real transgender to tell this story he should have done a documentary and air it on lifestyle or educational channel not on daytime soaps. Your right the show SUCKS big time now it has totally gone down the tubes with all the triangles Bell writes isn’t it time to go back to basics and have more fashion wars instead of all this incest bed hopping.????

Oscar’s stepchild!

I am still in shock that Karla wasn’t nominated for a Daytime Emmy. All I can say is she deserved a nomination worlds more than some of the actresses who were nominated.

Not surprising. I will be glad when the writers get back to the show as we first knew it to be. these drastic stories are not necessary in our home through the TV. Bradley said he wanted to make people aware….. we are plenty aware of what goes on in the world and for those that did want to watch that, there are plenty of reality shows ,sitcoms, videos ,library’s and so on.. that they can go to. Seems like Television is all concerned about Trans, gays ,Lesbians etc…. that they take a show, from what we liked and what attracted us to the show in the first place and force stories like this on us without a choice.either watch the show w loved since the beginning with all this shoved in our faces 5 days a week, or give up our show. Why is it that people who are straight are the ones that get ignored from what they want shown on TV.we know whats in the world. In our own homes, we should be able to watch programs and TV should make ONE channel with shows like that, for ones who love it. Please leave our soaps alone.

Are you kidding? Straight characters ignored on B&B? That’s ridiculous! Maya is the only LGBT character on B&B. Everyone else is straight!

Your prejudice is showing. You can’t see the forrest from the trees. Look at all the straight characters on B&B: Bill, Katie, Brooke, Liam, Ivy, Steffy, Wyatt, Nicole, Zende, Sasha, Eric, Quinn, Deacon, Vivian, Julius, etc.

The scene where Maya and Caroline make peace with one another should have gotten her and Lindsey the nom. Also the ones with her dad, I think it might be because a transgendered woman isn’t playing the part.

I think K.M. did a great job in the storyline and deserved a nomination.

It’s sad that people still can’t understand that no one chooses to be transgender. This is about science. Why can’t people who use the Internet to make derogatory comments not use Google to do basic research on transgender issues?

Nancy Lee Grahn’s Star-Studded ALS Fundraiser Reveals “I’ll Be There” Video Featuring Soap Opera Notables

Talk about your impressive line-up! It’s a soap fans dream and for a great cause. General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) is prepping her one-night only ALS fundraiser which will feature many of her friends and co-stars.

The benefit is set for May 4th in Glendale, California. Slated to participate are Genie Francis, Jane Elliot, Peter Bergman, Maurice Benard, Eileen Davidson, Thorsten Kaye, Michelle Stafford, Stephen Nichols, Rena Sofer, Jason Thompson, Kelly Monaco, Melissa Claire Egan, Maura West, Kristina Wagner, Gregory Harrison, Trevor St. John, Kate Mansi, Kirsten Storms, Cynthia Watros, and many others.

On Wednesday, Grahn took to her social media and released an “I’ll be there” video shout-out featuring, Monaco, Elliot, Bergman, Bernard, West, Harrison, St. John and more. In a touching and important moment in the new video, Michelle Strogny, who is battling ALS, is featured.

Photo: ABC

Previously, in speaking with Soap Opera Digest on the impetus of the event, Grahn recalled, “I was actually doing Zoom events during Covid and I met this woman that I just fell in love with, Michelle Strojny. At the time, Michelle had been living with ALS for four years. Now, it’s five years. She is a mom of a teenage son, she has the most wonderful husband, and she has been dealing with this [disease] for quite a while. And obviously, there isn’t a cure yet. It’s not survivable yet. But as she says, it’s not incurable. Nothing is; it’s underfunded. But anyway, I just really dug this woman. She is so grounded and filled with grace, and she spends all of her time working to raise money for the cause. We did a fundraiser for her last year and then I thought, ‘You know what? The soaps don’t ever get together to do something for charity.’ Collectively, we have this amazing community and we don’t collectively use it for a good cause, and I think it’s such an easy thing for us to do and we could potentially really make a difference.”

As GH viewers know, Gregory Harrison is playing the character of Gregory Chase, who is also battling ALS in a touching storyline that is currently playing out shedding a light on this disease.

For information on Nancy’s event, including the stars who are s scheduled to participate click here. To purchase tickets to the event click here.

‘General Hospital’ Writer Shannon Peace Let Go, and Shares on Sprina: “One of My Only Regrets is to Not Have the Opportunity to Develop That ‘Ship’ Further”

As General Hospital’s new head writing team of Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahy gets off the ground and running, there are still changes a foot on the writing team.

Now comes word via breakdown writer Shannon Peace that she is no longer on contract with the long-running ABC soap heading into its 61st season. Peace shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram, thanking the fans, and the show for the opportunity and the importance of diversity in the writers room.

Peace began, “After almost 3 years on staff and 106 episodes penned, I am no longer on contract with General Hospital. Writing for this country’s longest running television serial drama has been an education of epic proportions; I will forever be grateful that I earned my WGA card on a daytime fixture that holds memories for so many.” (Peace pictured below with GH EP Frank Valentini and script writer, Charlotte Gibson from about ten months ago).

Photo: SPeaceIG

Shannon added “Even more importantly, as the sole Black breakdown writer (and only POC in the writers room) during my tenure, I pushed for vital interactions and discussions that prioritized inclusion, visibility, and representation”

The writer pointed to the example of vital interaction when in story, “Stella and Portia’s frank July 2022 conversation about the role race played in Esme’s framing of Trina is just one example of the impact I’m gratified to have had.”

Acknowledging former GH co-head writers was also part of Peace’s farewell expressing, “Appreciation to my former bosses, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor – not only taking a chance on me, but for valuing my opinion and championing my voice.”

Courtesy/ABC

Many GH fans know that Peace was key to the development of the love story between Trina Robinson and Spencer Cassadine as played by Tabyana Ali and Nicholas Chavez. Shannon gave a special shout-out to ‘Sprina’ fans, “I also want to thank fans who were supportive of my work, especially the recognition of my love for ‘Sprina’. One of my only regrets is not having to develop that ‘ship’ further.”

She concludes her statement with,”In the aftermath of a historic writer’s strike that shed new light on the troubling ways writers are regarded in daytime, my sincere hope is that General Hospital recommits to valuing staff writer efforts and input, with a more intentional focus on diverse viewpoints — and thrives for another 60 years.”

Accompanying her post, Shannon added, “Thank you all for the love and support these last few years. I hope GH fans get all they hope for and more!”

So, what do you think about GH not renewing Shannon’s contract? Will there be more continued changes afoot? What do you think is the future of ‘Sprina’ anyway at this point as viewers wait to see if Nicholas Chavez officially returns to the show?  Comment below.
