DAYS Greg Vaughan Talks On Serena and Eric's History, Any Future With Nicole, and Daytime Emmys!

This week on NBC’s Days of our Lives Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan) meets up with an old flame when Serena Mason descends upon Salem.  One Life to Live favorite Melissa Archer (Serena) has been brought in to play the world traveled journalist to spark up Eric’s messed up love life after his relationship with long time love, Nicole (Arianne Zucker) went south.

On-Air On-Soaps caught up with one of our favorite gents, Greg Vaughan to ask  him what it has been like crafting and playing this new love story in front of the camera with a relationship that has never been heard of before by the viewing audience. Plus, Greg weigh-in on if he thinks there is still hope for a reconciliation for Eric and Nicole and he shares his thoughts on the embattled and always controversial  Daytime Emmy process, and if he might be even be a contender when the Pre-Nominations are announced in 2015, and much more.

Melissa Archer just debuted as your new love-interest Serena Mason.  Was it hard for you to create this never before spoken of relationship?

GREG:  It was not hard.  It was just to establish a quick relationship and back-story with someone who was Eric’s former love interest from years off the canvas, and that they kind of coexisted in a place that was third world and had a lot of turmoil in it, was a bit challenging.  So Eric and Serena bonded back then and they created something. Was it quick and easy?  Was it long and lasting?  Is it kind of like oil and vinegar?  These were questions to be answered.

Did Eric’s relationship with Serena ultimately lead him to turn to become a  man of the cloth?

GREG:  No.  They, being in the same field of expertise with journalism and news, they were always fighting one another for the feature story …

… That means sex on the soaps!

GREG:  Well, that came later.  (Laughs)   It was like passionate, and so when they had it, they had it.  But once that Eric made the choice to go towards the missionary and the priesthood, I think that was a fine line he was walking.

Were you sad that the writers decided to pull apart Eric and Nicole’s (Arianne Zucker) love story?

GREG:  Of course, I was sad.  I don’t think the story is quite finished yet.  I think it’s an unfinished story that will cross paths once again.  You know, when you go through a hurdle, or have a big hill to climb to overcome, or what these characters went through which was a big mess … it’s going to take a lot to bring them back together.  After some time, some separation, and some piece of mind, maybe we’ll come back together and maybe rekindle a flame.   I don’t think the flame is going to die.

What do you think of Serena and Eric’s story since you are five months ahead and have delved into it a bit more deeply?

GREG:  To be honest, it’s a bit of a forced story, and by that I mean where you’re forced to do things the character never did before.  The writers ask you to take it and run with it, and even though there are some new things about my character, it’s up to me and it’s my job to make it real.  Hopefully, it will be judged by good performances and the acting.

Did you submit yourself for Daytime Emmy contention this year?

GREG:  Not by choice.  Here is my thing; there is a lot of political red tape behind it.  I can honestly say I don’t feel it’s really structured, and not represented by the core of the cast.  It’s judged by who wants to be in the category. Who is the blue-ribbon judging panel?  I don’t know.  I know that certain networks or producers, they have control of who they want to have put in to each category, and unfortunately, I have gone through that dilemma, whether the work is there, or not. Some have better work than others, and some get favored over others, and it’s a political system that I hate.  I believe that with resources in our own offices at NBC and DAYS, they were very behind the Emmys this year.  Our casting director and our publicist, they were the ones that were in charge of getting everyone involved and having you submit yourself.  They have been at the forefront of this year’s Emmy submissions.  I won’t be taking credit for anything.  I do think they kind of unearthed a stone, and showed me some scenes that I had forgotten about.  I am grateful for the show, and the opportunity to be able to create, and what we are able to produce. I think there is an extremely amount of amazing talent within this pool.  I do hope, of course, my work could get recognized every year.  Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) said to me, and I love this guy so much, he said, “You don’t need a statue to mark all the work you have ever done.  You’re work has already been marked.  You know what you do, and you know what you’ve done, and everyone else does.  You don’t need everyone else to acknowledge your success.”

And on a closing holiday note, what will you and your boys be doing come Christmas time?

GREG: We are talking some snow, and snow angels, and maybe a beach somewhere.  We are kind of putting everything in the hat, and the boys are going to select … best out of three.  (Laughs)

So, what do you think about Eric and Serena’s back-story? Are you willing to give it a chance and see how it plays out on air?

Do you still hope Eric gets back together with Nicole? What do you think of Greg’s comments on the Daytime Emmys?  Comment below!

They make a great couple. I can’t wait to see where this goes!

Plain and simple, Yes Definitely….I have never watched Melissa Archer anywhere. Greg Vaughan did what I thought was impossible….he became Eric Brady and I loved Eric before Greg….now I just love the character even more. As much as I hate the rape of him as a priest the conflict that this has brought about really has wonderful potential….I can’t wait to see how Serena will fit into this…and now Serena meet Marlena as well I wonder what’s up with that 🙂 ……that just add so many possible elements to the whole story!!!!

Personally, I agree with Greg. The Serena pairing is way too forced! She comes off as desperate, and he clearly is not over Nicole! Eric and Nicole’s story was a well written slow burn story. You don’t see that too often these DAYS! Ericole have unbelievable chemistry, and I’m praying for an Ericole reunion in 2015!

#Ericole for the win!!

Greg reinforced my opinion regarding Ericole. I don’t blame him for feeling the way he does. Why the show did a 180 on them boggles my mind. It is insulting to the many loyal viewers who have watched this love story unfold from the very beginning.. They are the loves of each other’s lives as it has been pointed out numerous times and I don’t think Serena can ever take Nicole’s place in Eric’s life.

ICAM. I really hate most of the storylines on DAYS, of the ones I liked Ericole was my favorite. Now it’s gone. I have no idea why. They have taken away my main reason to watch.

Great interview. I just love Greg Vaughn, but I am so sad and ANGRY at what the writers did to the Eric and Nicole love story. They made us wait so long, and for what.??They just ended it with a former priest not being able to forgive. I just don’t get it, and I believe the fans are not going to enjoy a newbee being a love interest for Eric. So sick of what they have done to Nicole’s character. She always comes out the loser. Just sick of Days period and after watching for 49 years, I just may stop.

“…Nicole’s character. She always comes out the loser. ”

there’s so much truth to this

it’s like she’s being passed around… between

Eric, Brady, and Daniel.

heck…. for what it’s worth… till DAYS production steps up to the plate…. why not give NIcole and Rafe a try… they both truly care about each other

at lest it’d be different until the DAYS brass ??? find the monies and production value to hire her a leading man

her last interview with MF… is not lost on me

she’s always left fending for herself and shimmying up to the same ole same ole

therein seems forced and stale… BFF if nothing else with : Eric, Brady, and Daniel

yawn

not fair….

DAYS production… find your VALUE : re-hire Nicole mother : FAY

just make her alive

this would ad so much light to both characters… and it’d steer away from the , here we go again… tried and true… 3 some… who don’t deserve her

I was so involved in the storyline of Eric and Nichole. and when it ended the way it did with hate on Eric’s part my heart was broken for Nichole. I hope the writers find it in their hearts to pair them together again. Serina is new to DOOL and I’m sure they can pair her up with someone good.

I want Ericole back!! Chemistry like that doesn’t come along very often!!

Michael, once again hanging out with the dreamboat of Days. Really great interview. Greg is so down to earth and you can see it in the way he is with his 3 boys. The Serena story feels a bit rushed to me as well. I guess I miss the passions and luring of two people wanting to be together but they cant etc type of storyline. Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds.
Thanks!!

First of all, thanks for the incite into Greg & his character, Eric. I for one loved the pairing of Greg (Eric) & Ari (Nicole). They have undeniable chemistry & I was sad to see the relationship come to such an abrupt halt with no true closure for either character. I’m a huge Greg fan so seeing him have screen time despite it not being with Ari is something that will take some getting used to. Greg is an incredibly gifted actor & I hope he continues to get the screen time he deserves. Loved the interview & love Greg!! = )

Ericole was the perfect angst filled story and tptb trashed it. Why?? It’s like with AS gone KC & co, NBC, tptb don’t care any more. Good to know that Greg sees what viewers do – a rushed, out of left field story that makes no sense. Days is wasting a talented actress in Ari Zucker and the amazing chemistry of Ari and Greg. How sad.

I agree – Days had a goldmine with Eric & Nicole – great chemistry, great acting, a history, a storyline…and they trashed it so they could pair Nicole with Daniel? Make me puke – Daniel sucks & I hate that they’ve done this!! Get some new writers, Days!!

Why are they forcing Eric and Serena together? MA might be okay, but should of been brought in for Rafe, Brady, or better yet Lucas instead of making Eric look boring with this story. Reunite Eric with Nicole along with their long await child. After 15 years wait they need their child which will be more story than a silly girl Eric meet in Africa could give.

it really is time to lay low on the constantly interweaving… the goes nowhere

chanteuse godiva top of the heap Nicole… layering for naught… w/ Daniel, Eric, and Brady

leave well enough alone

pair her with Rafe !

she’s at the top for leading lady contender

it can’t be that difficult to hire her mother … the very much alive, FAY

Fay alone would brighten the lives of Roman, Abe, Victor, and Stefano

YES, YES, and double yes

he is so dazzling ‘ly handsome : it’s not lost on the audience… that he is able to feature prominently

let him loose… wouldn’t it be something to see him so extreme from the priesthood… to Salem’ nuDIMERA esque leverage

his acting style leaves the audience piqued

EJ, Sami, and Kristen of the topless hierarchy are bereft… barren

forward : Eric, Nicole, Lucas, Kate, Kayla, JJ, T, Eve, Theresa, Justin, Adrienne, Paul,

feature these dynamic presence , as they are deserving

I love this team

would Stefano hire him

I do agree with GV’ Eric :

Eric and Nicole are never out of our orbit and in Salem

first loves do not leave

Greg is so cute. I love Days! I am loving paul narita to bits!!!!

“…I am loving paul narita to bits!!!! ”

I can’t believe our good fortune

I have the utmost respect for Greg Vaughan…as a decent human being….an incredibly sensitive actor….and a loving and responsible father. .I liked Greg’s response “I take what the writers give me and run with..it is my job to make it real ” He’s a Pro.

He is a typical soap star, a class act with a humble approach.

Greg Vaughan is such a H-U-N-K!!!!! And…he can A-C-T!!!!!

Love this candid interview. I respect that. I agree with GV, Ericole are not over, the story is not finished. He knows, and the fans know it. We were short changed a real pay off.
And yes this insta new love interested with newly created back story, am not buying it. AZ and GV’s chemistry is palpable. From the little I have seen with MA and GV….I will borrow the word ‘forced’ from the interview. No thanks. Eric was written to have one love of his life, Nicole. Serena would be better with Rafe or Brady. I hope they reunite Eric and Nicole in 2015. And hope they don’t change Eric too much…

I’m glad Greg is being honest about his new pairing. It IS forced. I hope Eric and Nicole find a way back to each other sooner rather than later.

Send Melissa Archer to GH and pair her with Silas…………hard to see her with someone else, even if it is a different Soap.

I agree with you Tali! Why not bring Tanner back and develop a story with Melissa? I am long overdue for some Michael and Melissa magic…

Jonathan Jackson and Anthony Geary had amazing chemistry but Greg was an excellent Lucky on GH and I would welcome him back in a heartbeat. I actually think he would be better as Lucky now since he looks older and so is the character.

I watched GH during part of Greg’s run as Lucky. He did an excellent job of playing Lucky the adult. I thought it was a shame the way TPTB kicked him to the curb when Jackson wanted to return. We see how long that lasted. Another bone headed move by the alphabet people. But, it worked out for me. I stopped watching GH in 2005 and now get to enjoy Greg’s work on Days.

Yeah thats the problem with actors going off and doing bigger projects. IF they come back on their old soap its only for a limited time or some kind of stunt casting move. I enjoyed Greg and I would prefer him over Jonathan BUT with Jonathan and Anthony together, thats tough to beat!

Melissa Archer does fit in perfectly with the cast…i will have to wait and see how hers and Erics story goes…it does seem a little forced at the moment…its like the writers dont know what to do with Erics character and like they needed to hurry this to fill the void after Ejamis departure…Serena feels like the next Sami Brady…big mistake not casting her as Sarah Horton…Sarah and Eric still couldve played out this storyline plus had she been Maggies daughter it wouldve been a bonus having her connected to other characters…jmho!!!

Greg and Melissa have such great chemistry so far. I rather see the beautiful Serena with a guy who actually gets airtime, like Brady.

I wanted to say eric need to be with a woman that is honest to me that is serena and not that loser nicole.i hope that eric and nicole never get back together has a couple and beside the are so wrong for each other.

I am so looking forward to seeing this story develop. I love Greg Vaughan and want to see much more of him. I love Melissa Archer and know she will do an outstanding job.

I love Greg’s honesty. He has given me hope that ericole aren’t done, nicole is always the underdog and I will always root for her. I hope one day to get back the Eric that I loved, the one that cherished nicole.

I love Greg’s honesty. This was much needed for despondent DAYS fans that feel like they have lost one of the best pairings in a long time – Eric and Nicole. I support Greg, but can’t bring myself to watch the character of Eric with this other person. Eric and Nicole were perfect together and obviously something special. I hope they get this fixed so I can enjoy my show again!

Thank you Greg Vaughn for expressing how many DAYS fans feel. This story is forced, and while I normally enjoy MA as an actress so far Serena is no Natalie Buchanan. I just hope they shuffle Serena out of this story quickly, because I want to enjoy MA on DAYS and quite frankly if they keep her such a Melanie clone it’s. just not going to work

A wonderful interview with GV – he certainly doesn’t seem to be scared to voice his opinion. I hope he is right, and that Eric and Nicole will eventually circle back to each other. What Days did to their story still blows my mind – they finally had an interesting, believable couple, with built in angst, they crafted a beautiful, slow burn story that reminded me of the great supercouples of years ago and then they blew it all to pieces. I will never understand the purpose of that.

With regards to MA, I have no opinion of her one way or the other (I didn’t watch a lot of OLTL in the later years) and I was willing to give her a chance, but saddling her and GV with this clunker of a story is doing her no favors. It reeks of a rewrite and certainly feels forced. How they didn’t see MA and immediately think “Sarah Horton” I don’t know. Plus, there are a couple of unattached guys on canvas right now (Lucas, Rafe), pairing her character with either one of them would have made far more sense than this story IMO.

She’s just too boring for my tastes…no sex appeal, like jennifer, and Salem doesn’t need another annoying red head…

I have watched DOOL in bits and pieces over the years and am familiar with many past storylines and characters especially John and Marlena, Bo and Hope, and EJ and Sami. I am only watching it full time now because of Melissa Archer. I personally think Melissa Archer is doing a great job of making viewers believe that she knows Eric and that they share a past. However; I would have preferred for her to enter Salem in a different storyline. It is abundantly clear to me that Eric and Nicole are an end-game couple. They will have several years of breaking up and making up but I believe they will always be written back to each other so to bring her in as the speedbump is already setting her up to be hated by the Eric and Nicole fans before she is really given a chance. I enjoyed her as Natalie despite some of the ways in which she was written. But I was hoping for a fresh new character and one that is not set up for automatic turmoil. I know all characters get that at some point but she is already being set up adversarial. But chalk that up to the soap opera triangle game!

I appreciate the candid interview with Greg.
It does feel forced…where as GV and AZ just have that thing, the IT factor.
I don’t really see any chemistry with M.A to be honest. Feels awkward.
I think he even had more chemistry of sorts with Eve.
No one brings the heat like Ericole though.
They will always circle back to each other, like moths to a flame. I wouldn’t want to compete with that.
M.A fans should want better for her.
GG/Rafe needs a love interest with Jordan leaving.
Or Lucas, he definitely needs one!

for the love of all things possible

where is the love interest for Kassie DePaiva’ Eve Donovan !?!?

it was announced she’d be joining DAYS : 01-28-14
her first airdate : June 18, 2014

6 months later… and nary a nibble…

her first dance seemed like with Daniel right out of the gate : Whew! thank the stars that didn’t take

then she met Aiden… and that sparked… he’s taken with Hope… and even Kayla… dang! he just won’t let up… Aiden has it on for every one… and that’s fire

then it seemed like Eric was on the upswing… shucks

alas… Serena made it to first… and home runs?

it just gobsmacks that Wally Kurth is ON, “big” at GH… he belongs home… in Salem.. to further enliven and DRIVE w/ Eve… and triangle Adrienne

Eve …

belongs with ??? : it’s her mantra that her character embroils with MEN… it’s about time the audience knows her

Kayla and Adrian look too much alike…I’ve been watching this show since the 70s and I can’t even keep them straight…both boring too.

I adore Greg Vaughan. He’s the perfect man…gorgeous, not full of himself, great father and human being. His role as a priest who was raped was insanely good, and for that he should hands down win an Emmy. When he cried, I cried. His pain was palpable. Nicole was his first love and that’s how it should stay. They had great chemistry. A couple of things…perhaps because nicole and Daniel are a couple now in real life, they decided to pair them on the show. Not good. I hated that scene in the park where they were playing ball. Please. The writing is terrible since EJ and Sami left. Kristen is the only one who shook things up. This Serena character IMHO has to go. She’s a bore and butter face just like Paige (I can’t stand her). Honestly, is there a shortage of good actors out there? The men win it hands down on days…Nicole , Kristen and Hope are the on,y pretty ones. As for MA and Greg, There is zero chemistry. She has zero sex appeal. Days seems to hire the same looking characters over and over. I feel bad for Brian Dattillo (Lucas). He hasn’t had a single girlfriend outside of Sami (who gets every man in the show) and Nicole (but Kate paid her to marry him). The girl they brought in temporarily who knew Jordan looked a little like Kate mIddleton and would have been better than this melissa archer. Even Kristen has more chemistry with eric! I don’t care of she was good on another soap, she doesn’t fit in on days…they all seem to be melding together and there no one really different. I’m exhausted watching jordan constantly squinting…either get her glasses or tell the actress to stop it,…she’s so maudlin and always depressed. They better bring in someone hot for Rafe…I thing the girl who played Fancy (Emily Wexler?) is gorgeous and she was his love interest on Passions….but if days doesn’t start to shake things up, I’m gone…and jennifer…they turned her into a total bore..she’s another one with no sex appeal…and what did they do to Abby’s hair…she’s looking like a school marm!

Chloe might have been a good match for eric since she’s very sexy…but nicole belongs with him…I thought maybe Rafe and hope would get together…but obviously not…

Nobody has chemistry like Eric and Nicole please bring them back together. Serena is not for Eric she is just boring !!!

I respect Greg Vaughan very much. He is a single parent with three young boys who he obviously loves very much.

He is being wasted in the chasm DAYS has sunk to over last 13 months. The show has changed again and doesn’t seem to have the money to continue. I think we will see show wrap up on its 50th anniversary. That probably equates to production stop at studios around May/June.

All of the DAYS actors should be keeping a high profile and garner support for their next gigs. Just like Kassie DePaiva, her role could not possibly been originally framed as an inexpensive Mrs. Robinson role. It is sad for the cast, crew and writers.

In the next 6-9 months, it may be the perfect time for Lucky to return to PortCharles on #GH. Always wish the best for a nice guy who is plain speaking and a solid actor with decent material. Looking for Greg’s next success far from the sets of the END of DAYS.

I’m a huge Melissa fan from OLTL – used to watch DOOL a long time ago and just started re-watching again with the appearance of Serena. I have to say: I think Ari is an amazing actress and I get why people are upset over Serena coming between that couple (although I have not seen them together) and I for one, would rather see Melissa’s character with Brady = that actor is more of a match to Melissa then Greg is and I think they could be dynamic together – so my choice is a Brady = Serena match

Agree with so many of the comments made. Eric (Greg Vaughan) and Nicole (Ari Zucker) are amazing together. Great chemistry!! I miss their incredible storyline. Couldn’t agree more that they are the next super couple or could be!!! Loved the build up of their relationship and am devastated that the writers tore them apart. Have not been able to bring myself to watch the show since they separated these two. Hope that Greg is correct that they are not over. Please put these two back together and I’ll return to the show.

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

Photo: JPI

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Photo: JPI

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Photo: JPI

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

Photo: JPI

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Photo: JPI

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

Lisa Rinna Would Be Down to Reprise Her Role of Taylor McBride in ‘Melrose Place’ Reboot

When Lisa Rinna departed her popular role of Billie Reed on Days of our Lives back in 1995, her next major role would be a jump to primetime and the soapy Melrose Place.

In 1996, Lisa was introduced as new character Taylor McBride and stayed with the Fox young adult sudser for three seasons. Now in 2024, with the recent reveal that a Melrose Place revival is the works with Heather Locklear, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton all on board to reprise their signature roles, would Rinna board the project should it come to fruition?

Speaking with PEOPLE, Rinna expressed, “Well, gosh, I’ve heard about it. I haven’t been approached or anything, but I would love to see what Taylor McBride is up to 25 years later. Wouldn’t that be something?”

OG Melrose Place fans know that in story, Taylor moved to the Melrose Place apartment building with her husband Kyle played by Rob Estes. However, Taylor had her eye on Dr. Peter Burns played by former GH star Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco). But, by the time she had moved to the apartment complex, Peter had married tough as nails ad executive, Amanda Woodward, played by Heather Locklear.

Recalling her time on Melrose Place, Rinna added that it, “was one of my greatest and most fun acting experiences, playing Taylor and working with Heather and the whole crew.”  Rinna also noted, “So if they need a Taylor McBride appearance, they know who to call. I’m around.”

The new Melrose Place is in development at CBS Studios. In the premise of the reboot, the Melrose Place residents reunite after the death of one of their friends, “but the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”

Kristian Alfonso Returns to Days of our Lives for Tribute to The Late Bill Hayes

After a few weeks of Days of our Lives fans being upset that Kristian Alfonso (Hope Williams) was not on the first list of initial returns for Doug Williams’ funeral and episodes honoring his portrayer, the late Bill Hayes, comes word that the popular star is back and taping scenes.

Kristian reported to work on the Peacock streaming soap opera on Monday, April 22nd. She shared how important it is for her to be back for this particular return to the show that made her a household name.

“My return is very bittersweet,” Alfonso told TV Insider,  “because it is the end of an era with Bill gone. So to return to Days is very sad. I am appreciative that they came to me to include me in their series of shows honoring Doug and I’m very happy to see everyone, but I’m entering the studio with a heavy heart.”

It was back in 1983 that Kristian first debuted as Doug’s daughter, and now 41 years later looking back at it, and her time with Bill Hayes is very emotional for her.

“I remember my first scenes with him/ He was very loving, very welcoming. That he was very talented and an incredible actor and an icon, that all goes without saying, but my personal relationship and my working relationship with Bill, it was home,” expressed Alfonso. “Doing the scenes with Bill, I felt like I was with my dad because there was so much warmth and reality.”

Alfonso did express some deep regret, in that she had wanted to work with Bill Hayes during her last appearance on the soap back in 2023, but according to the iconic actress, there was something in the works but it never materialized.  “I’m sad that I did not get the opportunity to do the storyline that Ron (Carlivati, head writer) had planned/ It was great; we returned to Salem to reunite with our families and I would have had father/daughter scenes with Billy. What Ron had written was beautiful and emotional and it was a fantastic story. I was 100 percent for it and the fans would have loved it.”

As for if Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope will be back on-screen together anytime soon, Kristian would only say, “What I will say is don’t give up hope.” Doug’s passing and memorial episodes will stream later this year come late November into December.
