DAYS Judi Evans Talks Adrienne’s Breast Cancer, Her Leading Men & Taking On Social Issues On The Soaps

Photo/Courtesy: JEvans

In recent heartbreaking scenes, soap vet and Daytime Emmy winner, Judi Evans (Adrienne) has gotten the opportunity to shine, and there is much more to come for viewers of NBC’s Days of our Lives.  And let’s face it; if you are going to hand the ball to one of your cast mates, it’s stalwart Evans, who can bring the depth, the sorrow, and rooting factor to the audience at home.

As the story goes, Adrienne recently learned she has breast cancer.  It all came about in dramatic fashion as she was about to marry the man she loves, Lucas Horton (Bryan Dattilo).  But, wait!  Is he the man she loves?  Enter Adrienne’s ex, Justin Kiriakis (Wally Kurth), who comes to the realization almost too late that he wants another chance on love with her.  What’s a girl to do?   Unfortunately, fate intervened as Adrienne, in the midst of having to choose which man to be by her side, became seriously ill, and now is in for the battle of her life.

On-Air On-Soaps caught up with Judi to talk about the importance of the breast cancer storyline, but also how she has managed to throughout her daytime career, inspire and touch so many people with some of the most difficult story themes to tell from: rape to weight, and others in-between.

Find out below what Judi had to say about her soap opera leading men, what she is most concerned with in the telling of Adrienne’s breast cancer storyline, and what she hopes DAYS fans will take away from Adrienne’s journey, and much more.

When DAYS first brought to light that Adrienne carried the same gene as her mother for breast cancer, it took a long time until the series got this story to a place to tell it.  Did you know they were 100% going to tell this story in its totality back then?

Courtesy/NBC

JUDI:   It was a while back.  I think they were thinking about it, and I was very excited.  I started doing a lot of research, just in case.  I was so excited, because it is a great story to tell, and it’s a story that can’t be told enough.

But there was this length of time where it was simmering, and then they finally told it, which is great to see you have a major storyline!

JUDI:   I wasn’t sure if they were going to go into the story or not, but the writing is so good.  What I love about the writing on the show under Dena Higley and Ryan Quan is that there is no rush.  It’s not, “let’s just tell this story.”  There is a build to it and a history there.  I thank them for laying the seeds of it and then letting it blossom beyond this.  I think it is great storytelling.  I prefer that I not know what’s coming up for my character, then it’s a surprise to me.  I get excited as I would as a viewer when I get the scripts.  It’s just a matter of trusting in the writing and allowing it to grow.

You performed a very emotionally raw scene where Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) tells Adrienne she has breast cancer after she returns from the church, and it’s in front of a room of family and loved ones.  How did you feel when you left the set that day after filming that pivotal moment?

Courtesy/NBC

JUDI:  The only thing I thought when I walked away from the scene is, “I just hope I did the women who go through this justice.”  You never know.  I have never been through something like this personally myself.  I have had friends who have had breast cancer, my mom had cancer, but I don’t know what it is personally like.  So the only thing I can hope when I walk away is that I hope that I, and the show, and the writing, did the women justice.

Adrienne is so strong for everyone else, and always taking care of them.  Now with her health crisis everyone is saying to her, “Let us take care of you for a change.”  What did you think of that acknowledgement in the writing?

JUDI:  I loved that.  She is the mother hen.  Adrienne loves to take everyone.  I love that her first reaction was to run, because she is so used to taking care of everyone else, and now it’s “Oh, no!”  We all have our moments where we are not at our best, and we don’t make the best choices.  I love flawed characters.  Adrienne is a good girl, who always tries to the right thing, not that this is a flawed thing, but maybe it was not the best choice in that moment.  She was just going to run and ignore it, and hideaway and stick her head in the sand.  Even though it was only for a moment, I love that the writers gave her that opportunity, and it was human.

Adrienne missed her last mammogram check-up.  Did she miss it because she knew she had cancer?

Courtesy/NBC

JUDI:  There might have been that at a subconscious level, but she also had been very busy with everything that was going on.  She is thinking “It’s fine … if I just ignore it. See …I am fine … now I don’t feel so fine.”   It’s an inner subconscious struggle that we all have.  And plus, at times our lives get busy, and we forget the important things we are supposed to do, even if it’s a matter of life and death.  Personally, I am a month over due for my breast exam.  I know I need to go, but sometimes you get busy, but you’ve got to stop and make time for that.  I think that is a good lesson for me and the character to learn, because I think it’s something everybody goes through at some point.

This story looks to be “slow burn” and will take time to tell.  Since DAYS tapes six months ahead, you know how a chunk of this will play-out, since you have already shot it.  What can you say about what’s to come?

JUDI:  I feel it’s told very well, and from a very real standpoint.  It is not reality; it is a daytime drama, so as real is certainly possible.  I hope women who have gone through breast cancer will feel that it’s treated with the respect it needs to have.  I feel that way, and I hope the audience joins me on that.

Adrienne did not look well when she was in the room at the church with Lucas and Justin, following her wedding going south.  This was while she was trying to decide which man to be with!  In fact, she looked quite sick, and no one noticed even at first!

JUDI:  No!  Your body not being well will do that to you.

What did you think how it was written for Justin to bust into the wedding to try and stop it, and then profess his love for Adrienne?

JUDI:  It’s a classic moment.  I loved it.  It’s supposed to be a drama, and what better drama than you are about to marry the man you love, and your ex husband, who you will always love, shows up at the nuptials.  And … who doesn’t want to be fought over by two men.  I mean, really!

When Adrienne was in the hospital after she collapsed, she was talking with Marlena (Deidre Hall).   She admitted to Marlena she couldn’t really make a choice between the two men in her life.  Is that true … that she could not make a choice?

JUDI:  Yes, and no.  She made her choice, and even though she is sure in that choice, all of this came on, and it’s the farthest thing from her mind now.  Now, she doesn’t know, and there is so much going on that takes precedent that she is not wanting to make the choice she made, because she can’t even deal with it right now.  All she is thinking is dealing with the cancer, and getting better.

I thought she chose Lucas while in the hospital?

Courtesy/NBC

JUDI:  She never said the word, but I think Judi thinks that’s the way Adrienne was leaning, but again she can’t do this right now.  She is still torn.  There is a part of her that will always love her ex-husband and trying to deal with that.  Sure, she still has feelings for Justin.  She had the chance to tell Justin that, and she didn’t.  The choice is there, but there is a part of her that is not 100%.

Could it be that she refused to make a definitive choice, because she doesn’t think she will be alive, or that no one would want her now?

JUDI:  I don’t think Adrienne thinks like that.  She is OK to be on her own, but she does love both of them.  She has to figure out whom she loves, and who she is in love with.  There is still a lot of grey for her around: ‘Who am I in love with?’

But does she feel as a woman if she had a double mastectomy, that Justin or Lucas wouldn’t love her?

JUDI:  What if she does have to have that?   From the research I have done that is a huge, huge, thing for women who are going to have a mastectomy, or had them, and that is: “Will my loved one want me like they did before?   There is now a part of me that isn’t there, and I don’t look the same.”  Adrienne would think, “I know they love me for me, but that’s still part of me.”

If she were to have to have a double mastectomy, would her choice long term really come down to: ‘Which guy would handle this better?’

Courtesy/NBC

JUDI:  That’s a really good question.  I think there is that element of, “Would anyone be able to handle it?”  I am excited about the twists and turns, and the journey that they all go through, and the people that are connected to them as well throughout this story.

Stephen Nichols, as Patch, sheds those tears so movingly in scenes.  He did again when he learns his sister has cancer, and they share some moments together.  What was it like to have that sibling touchstone during this story beat?

JUDI:  There was a long time there that Patch and Adrienne did not share any scenes together.  I love that Dena and Ryan did not forget about our relationships, and friendships on the show.

DAYS has been missing that emotional heart-tugging story, and the breast cancer storyline is an issue of the times we live, and is relevant to women who watch the show.  Will we be crying for Adrienne on this journey?

JUDI:  I hope you will cry.  I hope it’s entertaining for the fans, and as actors, we want to touch people’s hearts and souls.  As an actor, there is no greater joy then knowing what you did affected someone whether they laughed, cried, or got mad.

You have now played three memorable characters on daytime soaps.  On Guiding Light, would you say that Beth’s rape was the most important storyline you told?  You have told several social issue storylines throughout your career on TV.

Courtesy/YouTubeP&G

JUDI:  There were so many social issues on Guiding Light.  As for Beth, she was raped and then there was a period of time when she was blind, as well.  It was a family-oriented and relationship-based show and so was Another World, and so is Days of our Lives.  I don’t know if it was the most important story, but I got a lot of letters from people who had gone through that, or were going through it while at Guiding Light.   They would tell me that watching someone go through that helped them.  Again, what greater joy to know you could touch someone, or help someone through your performances.

What would you say was Another World’s Paulina’s biggest peril?

JUDI:  Loving Jake, and not loving Jake.  For her, it was more about relationship issues than social issues.  While at AW, I did play a weight storyline, and it was something I have obviously going through, too.

Looking back, what do you think about the decision to allow the producers to tell this sensitive weight storyline, which was so personal to you?

Photo: Getty Images

JUDI:  It’s funny, because one of the producers came up to me, and it was after I had my baby.  I gained 100 pounds when I was pregnant with my son.  The producers came up to me and were hedging around, and they said, ‘Well, we are, um, thinking about, um, doing a weight storyline.”   And I answered, “Thank, God, because I am certainly not a size 2 anymore.  It’s my battle, and my struggle, and I would love to be able to play that on TV as well.  Why not?  That would be awesome!”  Well, they were so relieved.  A lot of people go through that, and I have struggled with weight my whole life, whether its 5lbs, or 50 lbs, or 100 lbs.  I am glad they were able to tell it.  I was more than willing to play it.  I’m the first one to call myself out on anything.  It’s a struggle I had since I was 12-years-old and a lot of people reacted to that story as well.  And no matter how many times a person tells you they love you for your insides, I would go, “Yeah, but, what about the outside? “  It does matter, and all the psychological things that we put ourselves through because of it.  It was nice to be able to play that.  I certainly felt it helped some viewers from their response to how we told the story.

Lets talks about your leading men:  Wally Kurth!  What can you say about him?

JUDI:  I love Wally.  He is such a doll.  We have been working together almost 30 years.

Courtesy/NBC

What about those dimples?  Was that first thing you noticed about him when you met Wally?

JUDI:   If anyone got mad at him, all he needs to do is smile!  He can get away with murder with those dimples, and that grin.  When I first met him, I saw that second.  I first saw his eyes.  I’m a smile person.  So it was his eyes, that smile, and then I noticed those dimples and went, “Oh, look at those cute dimples!”  We are good friends too, and it’s good to be friends when you are working together, because you always don’t have great days.  Partnerships, and friendships are great to help you through your ups and downs, and in return help them with their ups and downs.  We have built a strong friendship over the years.

Now, what happened when DAYS initially told you you would be paired romantically on-screen with Bryan Dattilo?

JUDI:  Oh, my God.  I had a crush on him since I met him at a charity softball game in the 90’s.  I have known Bryan from working on the show, although we never had worked together.  I adore him, and his humor, and he has lived life.  Getting to know him better and having the opportunity to work with him has been a huge joy for me.  It certainly added so much to me, personally.  We found out we had a lot of things in common.  He is hilarious!

Speaking of leading men, have you ever spoken with your former AW leading man, Tom Eplin (Ex-Jake) again?

JUDI:  No.  I heard of a couple of people who have run into him, but I have not seen hide nor hair of him.

What was it like working with Tom in those very dynamic scenes between Paulina and Jake on AW?

JUDI:   We were certainly good friends, too.  You could not be asleep on the job when working with Tom.  You had to be on your toes the entire time, and that is thrilling.  He was an amazing partner to work with, too.  I can say throughout my daytime career, I have been very lucky, and very fortunate.

On Guiding Light, you had two leading men: Grant Aleksander (Ex-Phillip) and Vincent Irizarry (Ex-Lujack and Nick, now Deimos, DAYS).   So now, what’s it like being with Vincent so many years later at Days of our Lives?

JUDI:   Well, it’s funny.  Vincent and I don’t cross paths on-screen.  However, off-screen it has been so lovely to reconnect with him.  He is a sweetheart, as well.  Vincent is so funny, and so bright, and so well-read.  He loves history, and when you sit down to talk to Vincent he is a very interesting man.

Is there a scene coming up in the next six months that you were most proud of your work in?

Photo: VIrizarryTwitter

JUDI:  I don’t think I ever walk away thinking “that was great”, because I always think I could have done better.   I will say; there were several scenes with Wally, and Bryan, and Lauren Koslow (Kate), that in every scene I worked with them in I was very proud of their work.  I can’t say that about my own, unfortunately.  I am always afraid I am the weak link.

When anyone thinks of your body of work in daytime, it can definitely be said that you bring such an emotional heart to everything you do.  When we watch your work, you are so present and emotionally available in scenes in all the characters you play.  I think that is what makes you so special in this medium.

JUDI:   Thank you, Michael.  You are the sweetest.  Happy holidays to you, and all the fans of Days of our Lives!

So, what have you thought of Adrienne’s breast cancer storyline thus far? Whom do you hope she ends up with … Lucas or Justin?  Of the social issues Judi Evans has potrayed on the soaps, which has moved you the most?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Wow, great interview Michael Fairman. I am enjoying Days right now,. Judi Evans is a wonderful actress. The acting so far has been terrific,. Kate Roberts supporting Adrienne really touched me. Great storyline so far. Where on earth is Caroline Brady? Is Peggy McKay ok?

I was wondering same thing about Peggy! I love the Kate/Adrienne stuff and hope they continue to put those two together

LOVE Judi’s responses to these questions, which are equally well phrased!
I thought as I read them, “I was wondering that, too!” So I thank you for that!
I can’t wait to see and go on this journey with Adrienne and co; I’m pulling for her! She’s one of my fave characters and Judi one of my fave actresses on Days! She BRINGS IT to every heart-tucking, gut-wrenching, wanna-jump-through-the-screen-to-hug-her scene! Keep up the great work, Judi! XO

Judi Evans has always been a favorite of mine. She continually gives top-notch performances and I hope Adrienne survives her cancer! I would like for her character Bonnie to return someday, but not by sacrificing Adrienne. Why not a dual role? Judi is certainly capable! Excellent interview, Mr. Fairman!

P.S. I’m old school…Justin and Adrienne!! Maybe Lucas can have Bonnie!

Should Ryan Quan and Dena Higley… continue to want…. to feature an excellent actor… who’s been lone.. for so long… and a LONG TIME favorite with the audience… that’s

Bryan Datillo…. Mr. Lucas

i’m with you… on old school… it’s going to be Justin and Adrienne.

HOWEVER: @DAYS please…. bring back the sexy uber talented hottie

Jade Harlow: Sheryl Connors

their was so much sizzle ; even I couldn’t stand it

HOT

Yes! When Adrienne inevitably chooses Justin, Sheryl would be a wonderful choice for Lucas.

This is an important story. I hope Days does not relegate it to the back burner like they do some many of the stories they start to tell. TPTB have a real problem balancing all the stories and characters. I am very impressed with the performances of Judi Evans, Bryan Dattilo and Wally Kurth.

God… Judi Evans can make you cry

she has such a rich history… with us

Guiding Light
Another World
Days of OUR Lives

extraordinary

just LOVE , LOve, LoVE her

haven’t even read the article yet

per @Llanviewer717

“I am very impressed with the performances of Judi Evans, Bryan Dattilo and Wally Kurth. ”

when the writing goes south…. reason I love the casts… @DAYS is no slouch in the actors department.

I love Judy, Patrick…..one of the best. Her newfound friendship with Kate, something which I never thought would happen, is heartwarming.
I have seen scenes of her days as Paulina on ANOTHER WORLD. And, I do remember watching some episodes while AW was still airing. This show was actually my grandmother’s favorite soap.
Judy never ceases to amaze me.

I apologize for misspelling “Judi”.
As we all know, the subject od breast cancer is not only, personal, but also, devastating. Thus, I must applaud the writers for giving Adrienne dignity, and for navigating through her traumatic experience with kid gloves, respectfully, delicately and mindful of the viewer’s feelings. Very comforting.

I love judi acting, she is so real in the parts that she play, she should have a ammie, she is a true start.

Loving the scenes with Judi and Wally, and Judi and Stephen and Mary Beth! Amazing work!! It’s about time to bring Justin and Adrienne to the front burner again!

Yes! And I so love them all interacting again.

adrienne and justin are a days supercouple!
they still have it 30 years later!
when you watch adrienne u never think shes acting!.. so natural, and real
you never fast forward her scenes
cant wait to see how this story unfolds….

THIS is why I love daytime drama. DAYS, make the most of this opportunity, please.

I am aware of Judi Evans’ long-standing daytime career, and while I was never sold on her nor Adrienne on Days of Our Lives, this storyline and how she’s been acting on the material has really opened my eyes a bit more. She really is doing a fantastic job and the storyline timeline for Adrienne’s cancer has been greatly paced. I am hoping this is not a story that is flubbed or taken in a different direction, because it’s working so well right now. Plus, I do love seeing Adrienne and Kate (Lauren Koslow) kind of develop this newfound friendship and connection!

Well, normally I root for Justin/Adrienne & old school. But I like Lucas having a relationship. I think he is long due & he and Sami aren’t going to happen anytime soon.

She did such a great job with Adrienne’s rape storyline back in the day, she’s had many important storylines but that one was tough and she was so good. Judi could never be the weakest link as she says, she is one of the very best actresses on the show! As for who she should choose, Adrienne always belongs with Justin!

I loved her on AW– I thought that weight story was well done– when she was pep up on diet pills and hit poor Kirkland with her car on the day Jake and Vicky were to be married– she did outstanding work displaying the guilt and grief her character inflicted–she has always been one of daytime better criers– Although I am usually in favor of original couples staying together– in this case I think Adrienne is better off without Justin– a lot of married couples divorce later in life– and it works out better for them– it is a realistic story and sometimes you can only break a couple and reunite them so many times before it becomes silly– I think Justin and Adrienne’s time has past– and beside it is time Lucas got the girl.

Judi Evans is doing a wonderful job. When “Adrienne” found out she had breast cancer; I myself found out the next day that I have breast cancer. I do not know her personally but she has been helping my try and cope with my own breast cancer. I think it is great that “Adrienne” has “Kate” helping her through this. As most of my support group are in denial. I am also still in denial. Doing as “Adrienne”, keeping busy and not wanting to really face it, yet. I think Adrienne should stay with Lucas. He’s already been through what she is going through and will be more of a support for her than Justin would ever be. j/s

Judith will NEVER be the weak link in any scene. She is a fantastic actress!! Her storyline is very well written especially when Kate outlines and advises her about the things she will be going through with her chemo etc. Being in the medical field myself, the writers have obviously researched this scenario because they are spot on with the details!!
Great interview as always Michael!! You too work hard at researching the people you interview, that’s why the questions are always so good!!!

I can’t call this

Adrienne with Justin
Adrienne with Lucas

three of DAYS most talented actors to grace our screens… and they are together

how much better can this be ?

argh! for old school… my heart knows full well… how much it should be Justin

just for the sheer delight of watching another sold good actor… it’s my Man Lucas.
PLUS Adrienne and Lucas are as close as any other newbie couple.

I think Lucas should cut his hair shorter… at the wedding… his longer hair.. made him look more boyish…. nevertheless… Bryan Datillo as Lucas is always funny, stoic, senses when he should step up. and that’s a huge payoff. hard to do. talent, yeah

DAYS knows it should mine their cast. this is as good as it gets

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves Talk Return to DAYS for Doug’s Funeral, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Their Enduring Friendship

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on December 3rd. The story will feature emotional and heart-tugging scenes of Doug Williams funeral and honor his portrayer, the beloved Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th at the age of 98.

While the actors, producers, and crew took a lunch time break to pose for some pictures and speak with the press, they knew they would have to get back to taping the funeral, which was going to make it a tough day, but also cathartic for all who loved Bill Hayes.

Several returns have thus far been announced including; Melissa Reeves reprising her signature role of Jennifer Horton (a part she first played in 1985), and Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux. Reeves had last appeared on the show back in 2021, and she was replaced by Emmy-winner Cady McClain in her absence when Jennifer was in storylines. In real-life, Melissa had moved full-time to Tennessee along with her husband, Scott Reeves (ex-DAYS, GH, Y&R). Now, and as previously reported, Reeves will first appear back on DAYS for the Thanksgiving episodes with the Hortons.

Photo: JPI

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Matt and Melissa during the 15,000th episode celebration to get their take on: being back for these special episodes, how it has been working with and watching Susan Seaforth Hayes portray Julie’s grief over losing Doug, and how they have supported each other through the years. Check out what they shared below.

Melissa, you are back on the set of Days of our Lives for this very emotional and special moment in the series history. How does it feel?

MELISSA: Oh, my goodness. I am honored. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but to be here for Bill. He was like my real-life dance partner. He taught me how to ballroom dance. And to be here for Susan, of course, who’s just been our sweet hero this whole week. We’re just following her lead. She’s just been this incredibly strong example for us in the midst of this trial and season of her life. She is like just lifting us all up with her. It’s been incredible.

I was at Bill Hayes memorial service which was truly incredible and I know at the time you were in Tennessee. It was moving and celebratory of his life, all at the same time.

MELISSA: That’s all I have heard. I have to watch it on You Tube. They said it was just a real celebration of his life and I love that.

Photo: JPI

This must be difficult for Susan Seaforth Hayes depicting the death of Doug, when she is still grieving the loss of her beloved husband. (Susan pictured above with the returning Stephen Schnetzer who plays her on-screen brother, Steve Olson).

MELISSA: I’m sure Susan has those moments at home by herself, but she’s so good at being a leader and leading all of us. We’re following her, you know, and she’s like, “This is how I want to feel today.” And we’re just going along with her, you know? It’s so sweet.

Photo: JPI

How is it to see Matt Ashford again live and in-person?

MELISSA: You know, Matt and I can go years without talking, or seeing each other, and then the minute we see each other we’re chatting away.

MATT: Melissa was out on set doing a scene yesterday on the phone talking to a stage manager; as she was telling some really tough news on the phone. I’m like crying in the background, literally, I’m off-stage crying.

MELISSA: And then we get like back into normal life, and we’re like, okay, “What’s happening? What’s happening with this … or what’s happening with that?”

I had read, Melissa, that you were in touch with Matt about if there night be a possibility for you to reprise your role as Jennifer for these special episodes?

MELISSA: Yes. Well, Matt was like, “Hey! Would you want to come back? “And I was like, “Matt, you know, I would always come back. ”

MATT:  Every time I come here to Days of our Lives, they ask, “Where’s Missy? How’s Missy?” Everybody backstage says, “I miss her.” All of the crew is asking about her and saying, “It would be nice to see Missy. Nothing wrong with you Matt, but …”  They said, “Where is she?” I said, “She wants to come!”

Photo: JPI

There are some beautiful photos of Missy and Bill and Susan thorough the years that I found. It just reminded me of just the deep and entrenched history we all have had with the show, personally and professionally.

MATT: Missy is roughly the age where Francis Reid (ex-Alice Horton) was when she started the show, which is just crazy.

Photo: JPI

I’ve always said Missy was going to be the next generation Alice. Do you feel that Jennifer is the heir apparent matriarch of the Horton family?

MELISSA: Yes. I mean, this has been greatest blessing of my life, and that would be great. I told Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of our Lives) when I was 17 that this show would be my life. Ken always told me, “This is your home,” and I’ve always felt like that.

How have gotten through the scenes watching Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie go through the loss of Doug?

MATT: Susan is bringing her best performance life for her and Bill. I mean, she’s a showbiz baby. She always has been one hundred percent, and she’s doing it for him, and this is who they’ve always been. So, you’re seeing this amazing performance colored by her life. She has her private life as Susan, but she has enough plugged into Julie that she’s done amazing work. The director, producers and writers are giving her room to live in these moments and it’s quite wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Have you already broken down in tears during the taping?

MELISSA: Yesterday, but today’s taping of the actual funeral I think they want us to try and be just more celebratory.

MATT: I mean, it is a beautiful long life for Bill Hayes and his character of Doug Williams, and so it will be about that. Then, you get a bunch of us together in the church pews, and there’s going to be hijinks.

MELISSA: We all have been through the waves of grief. You have that awful cry and then all of a sudden you feel okay.  There are those family situations we are portraying where you’re like, “What do we do? What do we do now? You know, no one knows what to do. But, it’s so sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the scenes all turn out.

So, are you glad that Matt and Melissa are back for the 15K episode and Doug’s funeral? From what we can tell, it’s going to be quite an emotional journey for Days of our Lives fans, and especially the performance of Susan Seaforth Hayes,

Ron Carlivati Talks on Decision to Make Days of our Lives 15000th Episode About Doug’s Funeral, and Previews Chances for WGA Award

This week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode. In of it itself, that is an incredible accomplishment for the long-running soap opera currently streaming on Peacock.

However, this on set gathering was a bit different. Though the show is celebrating their achievement, they are also in the middle of taping scenes surrounding the death and the funeral of Doug Williams, played by the late Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th of this year at the age of 98.

As previously revealed many longtime favorites are back to honor Bill and the character of Doug including: Gloria Loring (Liz), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Matthew Ashford (Jack), Maree Cheatham (Marie), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Stephen Schnetzer (Steve) to name but a few.

Michael Fairman TV was in attendance and spoke with Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati to gain some insight into how the 15,000 episode was crafted and the decision to honor the character of Doug Williams and Bill Hayes as its epicenter. In addition, Ron weighed-in on this Sunday’s April 14th WGA (Writers Guild of America) Awards, where he and his writing team are facing off with General Hospital for the daytime drama prize. Here’s what Ron shared below.

Was this your idea to make the 15,000th episode centered around Doug’s funeral and passing?

RON: It was. When you’re looking at it, and laying out the calendar for the whole year and you see 15,000 is coming up, we’re like, “What are we going to do?” And then, we got the news that Bill had passed away and something kind of clicked. I was like, “We should honor Doug on that show.” So then, we started to kind of build around that … when does he pass away? How does he pass away? Who could come back? You know, it’s a lot.  I’m very pleased with the returns that we got as there’s so much that you could do. We wanted everybody we could get. So, we put together a wish list and Janet Drucker (co-executive producer, Days of our Lives) made it happen.

You have Melissa Reeves back as Jennifer, when the role was last played by Cady McClain. What has it meant to have Missy back for these shows?

RON: It was so nice to see Missy Reeves. I think Cady has done such a good job, but on the 15,000th episode to see Missy as Jennifer, it’s a big deal. So having her was great, and overall, the milestone was a big undertaking, because you want to live up to it. You want the 15,000th episode to be good. Now, it has a lot of real emotion that you’re playing. because for the cast and the crew they’re honoring Bill Hayes just as much as we’re honoring Doug Williams.

Was it hard for you and the team to write this episode?

RON: Yes. I’ll tell you why it was hard to write.  When I wrote, for example, Asa’s (Phillip Carey) death on One Life to Live or Victor’s (John Aniston) on DAYS, Asa is a different type of character. Like, you could have characters going, “Oh! I’m glad he is dead.” You could have different points of view, but with Doug, you’re not having that. Every person loves this man. No one had a bad relationship with him. So, you’re challenge as a writer is how do you make it that not everybody’s saying the same thing and doing the same thing. And so, we tried to find ways to make the episode about all the familial relationships and yet, how do you make it about Doug and yet broaden the scope.

I had spoken to Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), a week after Bill’s memorial, for an interview. She said that she felt very fortunate that you did include her on discussions of how you would tackle Doug’s passing. How did that conversation go?

RON: First, I attended Bill’s funeral, which was incredible. I said to so many people it was an emotional service, but it was hard to be sad at this. The guy had an incredible life and it was an incredible celebration. And so, you’re sitting there watching this knowing that you now have to write something similar. And how do you write something that lives up to what you just witnessed? I wanted to talk to Susan to get her thoughts about, you know, how much do you want this to be about keeping Bill separate from Doug. How comfortable are you sharing your grief. She was incredible to talk to. It was a great chat.

You’re in the middle of taping these major scenes for the 15,000 episode to air in December. How do you think it’s going? Have you seen any of the scenes?

RON:  I haven’t seeing anything. I mean, we were still making changes to the script up till this morning!

The Writers Guild Awards are this Sunday, April 14th and once again this year there are two daytime drama nominees, General Hospital and Days of our Lives. How are you feeling about your chances this year?

RON: It is often just GH and us in the category. I’ve won three years in a row, so I’m kind of feeling like it’s their turn.

What episodes did you submit for contention? If I recall, they had to do with Victor’s memorial.

RON: The episodes we submitted were centered around Victor’s funeral. I think one has story with Vivian (Louise Sorel). We had some fun stuff, we had some emotional stuff at Victor’s death, and I am pretty sure that our submission was three episodes right around that time.

Did you make the decision to go with those episodes because there was a mix of humor and drama?

RON: I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, then there’s Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s crashing the reading of the will. So, we had a lot of fun and it’s hard sometimes to pick three that tell a story, as opposed to submitting for the Daytime Emmys, where the writing team only submits two shows. So, we shall see how it goes on Sunday.
