DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Bo's Funeral & A Family Grieves

Courtesy/NBC

Courtesy/NBC

On Wednesday’s episode of Days of our Lives, viewers finally witnessed the funeral and burial of Bo Brady (Peter Reckell), the iconic anti-hero of Salem.

The beginning of the show had Kayla (Mary Beth Evans), Roman (Josh Taylor) and Caroline (Peggy McCay) at the Brady Pub trying to gather themselves to prepare to say goodbye to their beloved brother and son, respectively.  Steve joins them in a touching turn from Stephen Nichols, who is so grief-stricken over the loss of his buddy, his best friend, Bo.

Meanwhile, Hope (Kristian Alfonso) is in full cop mode dealing with her grief over Bo, that she is keeping herself busy by bringing his captors to justice … the people responsible for cutting his life short.  Hope continues to have vision’s of Bo.  Rafe (Galen Gering) tries to get her to go to the funeral, but she is busy interrogating the Britta wannabe, who cut her finger lopped off for speaking to Steve by the enemies.

Once gathered for the funeral, members of the police force, Bo’s beloved friends, family, and yes, Hope all were present for a hankie-filled moment when they brought the casket of Bo to be buried.   However, DAYS decided to forego the individual family member eulogies and only had the priest speak.   But in what must have been the saddest looking procession, one by one starting with Caroline, they each placed a rose on Bo’s casket.   The grief shown by Roman and Kayla was unimaginable, while Hope just stood there holding her rose till everyone left in a state of despair, until she saw a vision of Bo.   Perhaps, most touching was the beautifully played moment at the end of the episode when Patch and Kayla are both at Bo’s gravesite.  Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans have been stellar in this storyline.

Back at the Brady Pub, Caroline sees the gloom and doom with the mourners and decides that in honor of Bo they must lighten up the festivites. So, Caroline downs a shot of liquor, and the others toast to Bo as well.   We are left with finding out that the man who could have been one of Bo’s captors is actually hanging out in Salem at Horton Town Square!

So, what were your thoughts on Bo’s funeral?  Were you satisfied, or disappointed?  Would you have preferred to have everyone make eulogies as in Will’s funeral, or do you think it would have been too repititive, was it a missed opportunity, or did you reach for the hankies all the same?  What performance or moment touched you the most throughout the funeral episode? Where are Kimberly, Billie and Chelsea?

I am asking the same question. Perhaps DOOL was unable to get Patsy Pease, Julie Pinson, Lisa Rinna and/or Rachel Melvin to come back. Or maybe the writers didn’t even think of asking either one of them.

Kimberly’s flight got delayed or something like that. Billie and Chelsea are together in England.

Theresa should have been there, though.

They at least mentioned why Kim “couldn’t make it”… but I don’t recall them giving any explanation about Chelsea. And to some extent, what about Frankie and Max Brady. They are family through adoption. Carrie couldn’t come to her Uncle Bo’s funeral either, ha.

I could accept the serial killing story but Wills murder and Chads beating were both too graphic-any show dont need to show all that-thats not entertainment-no wonder people in the real world are all going off the deep end-Hollywood feeds the mentally unbalance with too much violence that is far too gruesome and depressing…and its bad enough we are dealing with these funerals, Bo’s so soon with Ben’s story still goin is just too much gloom and doom…i did not watch this latest funeral…its bad enough hearing about the latest mass shooting in the real world…i need my escape and Days is barely providing that…hope it changes for the better by Christmas!

I thought it was a little weak. When I saw them outside I said, not again. At least this was the graveside portion.

I don’t know if I like Hope going vigilante.

I thought Shawn leaving was rushed. I like Claire, but she just seems to old to be Shawn’s kid.

Recast nuCiara. It was nice seeing Lauren’s picture.

Give NuCiara a chance! I think she’s got the talent – no one comes in stellar – except maybe Chad!

The service was pathetic – where was Jennifer? And my god get Kimberly and Shane in for a days work. Really pathetic what is going on. I think the neck tie killer needs to stop by Dena Higley’s house!

I agree… Claire looks too old to be Shawn’s daughter.

Hard to believe that Doug, Julie, Jennifer, Theresa (his niece), Brady (his nephew by his sister Isabella), Justin (his cousin), Chelsea, were not at his funeral?? I guess it’s hard on budgets and filming, but this was BO BRADY’s funeral for goddness sakes. Legacy characters deserve legacy funerals.
Will Sami mention her Uncle died or Will died for that matter when she’s back on?
I do LOVE how they are showing Steve grieve, as it should be.

I agree with everything. However, since this funeral was filmed six months ago we don’t know what was happening at the time. Melissa Reeves could have been with her family in Tennessee where she commutes to LA from. Susan Seaforth Hayes and Bill Hayes may also have had other commitments. Don’t forget that Bill Hayes is 90 years old. The same goes for Wally Kurth and Jenn Lilley. Holiday time is planned well in advance.

i thought it sucked – i guess we were to believe that the actual funeral took place inside the church because i imagine what we saw was the burial which i might add was just terrible – i could not believe this is the tribute they gave a beloved character that has been on dool for about three decades…………….WOW

That was the MOST pathetic funeral I have ever seen. First of all, it was snowing and Ciara shows up in a short dress and no jacket. The men are wearing fall attire and not in the least cold?? Snow on the ground? An outside service? Seriously??? Who would sit out in the cold for the length of a service? Someone was taking an early nip of Christmas cheer when they wrote that. And basically none of the cast was there for Bo’s funeral? Hope had to be convinced to go? Answer me how Hope is suddenly so tough and gangster when she couldn’t even fend off Aiden’s advances when he tried to kill her? She showed no police skill then and now she is bringing in foreigners and threatening them with death and doom? Someone should just say Aiden Jennings to her face. Apparently he was the only one who could hold Detective Hotpants back at bay. Ciara or the actress who plays her is AWFUL. This isn’t just new actor in the role syndrome. This is we grabbed her off the high school stage from her role as a country citizen in the background of the high school rendition of “Our Town”. She is beyond awful. I think she is reading her lines off her palms. Her range of emotion is so one dimensional. And to think they are going to be featuring her more often. Get me a motion sickness bag, I am going to need it apparently. And that Theo character…someone spare me. Why are they making him appear mentally challenged? He is autistic not brain dead. He speaks like a 3 year old. I don’t know how they chose these younger actors but the casting department needs some assistance and quickly. As much as I DESPISE the character of Steve (Pirate Patch) I have to say his tears over the loss of his friend Bo is touching. Kayla needs to stop crying already. She has been crying since Bo showed up in Salem again and hasn’t stopped yet. Someone needs to slap her back to reality and say, “enough already, get back to life girl” I was disappointed in the 60 minutes I had to endure to watch them bury a so called “legacy” character. Tiny Tim’s funeral was more convincing.

I share your disappointment with the new Ciara. After the wonderful job Lauren Boles did in the role, I find the new young lady very stiff and out of place. Lauren’s Ciara was a force to be reckoned with. She knew her mind, maintained strong eye contact with the adults and would not be dismissed. This new girl is a timid mouse. She doesn’t make eye contact with the other characters. You could be right. Perhaps she is reading her lines off her palms. I have trouble understanding her lines because her voice is so weak and hesitant. I try to give recasts a chance to find themselves in a role; but, I’m having a very difficult time with this one. Maybe the idea is to change direction and go for a troubled teen story. I don’t know if this young woman is up to it.

I sincerely hope Lauren Boles keeps acting and grows and has a wonderful career. She’s super.

beautiful words about everyone’s favorite Brady: Lauren Boles’ Ciara Alice

this just doesn’t bode well for Kristian Alfonso

without: Lauren Boles, Peter Reckell, Daniel Cosgrove

so…. ? she goes vigilante and then what? starts dancing with Rafe ?

it’s clearly obvious that Kristian Alfonso is thee leading lady of the hour

I hate that she’s starting all over again… when she had it in spades… with Daniel Cosgrove and Lauren Boles

I’m going to miss that girl… tremendous talent

Terrible choice in choosing this actress (nuCiara). Very inexperienced. No or fakes emotion, entirely. I stopped recording the show. Started watching diligently again, when Kristen returned about three or four years ago. Awful now. Bo’s captivity storyline was beyond boring. Ben and Abigail have been missing for weeks, it seems-and she has been tortured (not what I want to watch everyday-someone being abused and tortured), Caroline’s visions are laughable and ridiculous. I come on here to catch-up a bit-see if am I missing anything. Can’t stand anything relating to the Sami hour.

Like ALL of the writing lately, it was so bad. Where was the rest of the family??? His sister Kim showed up for other things but not her brother’s funeral?? Such a sad send off for a character that so many fans loved for many years. The 50th anniversary has just been a waste of talent and characters. Days just keeps going down the tubes. 🙁

What a let down ! No Jennifer, Doug, Julie ?? Budget or not, crazy not having them there. Ghost Bo wearing black bothers me too, if he’s an Angel, wear a white shirt !

God help us, What a crock of bs. Bo dying was a huge mistake. I know Peter wanted to leave, they should have recast the role of Bo Brady. Know one stays dead in daytime. Maybe Bo is alive, you never know. Maybe Stefano Dimera doctors saved his life, or maybe I am dreaming Lol.

When I heard the characters mention Bo’s up coming funeral, I wondered if it was going to be in that pitiful excuse for a park. Sure enough, it was!!!!!!! Please folks, spend a couple of dollars and build some kind of generic chapel/mortuary set. At the rate characters are dying, you’ll get your money’s worth.

Well when you see the park set with grave markers it changes the park to a cemetery and when you add a statue of the Virgin Mary as well you make fake park into a Catholic cemetery– the magic of television, my friend– LOL.

This show needs some help. I can’t take another one of these funerals in
Fake Leaf Park.
I just watch this show (on the NBC ap) just to literally pass some time while I am ironing my lab coat. Most of the characters I loved have been “killed off” or written out.
Kate decides that Gabi (sp?) is “the new face” for her product….no no, we don’t bother to audition other girls we just want you. Plus we will just grab what’s his head over there, Paul, Lord knows he has nothing to do on this show anyway, he will be the male model.
Sorry but lately DOOL has been pretty dull.

The funeral was boring as hell. lmao. Poor Hope, now she is going to the mental ward soon.

I actually liked Bo’s funeral compared to Paige’s and Will’s. I wasn’t missing the eulogies. I do agree Jennifer, JJ, Theresa and others currently on canvas should have been in attendance. Bo spoke to Chelsea on the phone prior to his death. A mention after said she was with Billie. I agree budget restraints are likely a factor.

Weak funeral. Guess Days wants to wrsp this one up! Surprised John & Doc were there but where were doug, julie, hope, maybe Brady?

Okay folks lets just resign ourselves to the reality gone are the days of big budgeted soap weddings and funerals where the entire cast is present. I am glad they skipped the funeral and just showed the graveside committal ceremony–maybe I have seen too many soap funerals but I don’t find them entertaining, so for me the shorter the better.

I agree with you Mary but they most CERTAINLY could have a Church set instead of always throwing everyone in that stupid Fake Leaf Park for every single occasion.
With one or two exceptions (like the always well balanced Mr. Aniston) I am the most impressed with Kate Mansi as the “can I pick wrong guys or what?” Abigail. I was totally convinced that she is threatened severely by Ben –
By the way, how come in that abandoned shack it was snowing outside of one window but not the other? Did they run out of snowflakes?

LOL I missed that one about the snowflakes–

They did have a beautiful Church set once upon at time that got downsized when Eric was a priest and then slowly disappeared after that– I guess they simply don’t use the set enough to warrant it being up all the time, and the cost of putting it up for one scene doesn’t make sense to them. It is a lot easier to put down some grave markers and a statue of the Virgin Mary to convert the existing park set into a Catholic cemetery, which is the normal for Days. Look at how many offices one office set has been over the last few years. We should be grateful that got some sets out of moth balls for the 50th and brought back the full Brady pub instead just one booth-

As for the funeral I’ve notice all soaps have slowly been shying away from showing any religious over tones to ceremonies such as baptisms, weddings and funerals and making them more genetic, I guess partly to lower expenses, but also to avoid offending anyone– having these events outdoors or in people’s homes just avoids any possible black lash of promoting one religion over another, or a particular denomination over another–

And you’re right Kate is doing a great job, sometimes with that kind of material it is easy to play it too melodramatic, but she is playing it with controlled fear, you can see it in her eyes, but not her voice, which is how someone in that situation would be, trying to act calm but inside scare out of their minds. These scenes would be great for her Emmy reel if she decides to submit herself

Maybe Y&R will let Days borrow their church set.

Especially since Y&R doesn’t ever kill anyone even when it’s on catastrophe after another!
