Drew Garrett on his reaction to his Daytime Emmy Nomination!
On-Air On-Soaps spoke this afternoon with Drew Garrett, the former Michael Corinthos of General Hospital on his Daytime Emmy nomination announced today in the Outstanding Younger Actor Category for the 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards being handed out on June 27th in Las Vegas. Drew shared his elation, and the bittersweet moment in his career!
Drew on how he found out he was nominated: “I found out through the east coast from some family members who were not taking the time change on the west coast into consideration, because it was 6AM in L.A. I woke up very early. And my day began after that, because I could not go back to sleep, because it was such awesome news. My mind was spinning. Thee best thing to wake up too! Later, I spoke with Maurice Benard (Sonny) who was my on-camera dad, but I felt like he was my off-camera dad at times. One thing that he said that reminded me of how he is such a great guy… was when I said to him, “Oh Maurice. I was bummed you did not get nominated!” But he said, “You know what man? Even if I had my nomination, I would give it up as long as you got yours.”
Drew on what episode he submitted that earned him the nod: “What I submitted was the aftermath of Claudia’s death in early November. It is where I come to my dad’s house and remembered I killed Claudia. There is also a huge montage in it that I liked, and that was another reason that I chose it. It showed this wide variety of awesome material I got to work with throughout the year. And I thought, “What a great way to show the blue-ribbon panel who are judging so they don’t have to do the work on the back-story, and, they don’t have to say, “What is this about?” There are some other great scenes and levels in it. Another great scene was one with Brandon Barash (Johnny) where Johnny comes in, in defense of his sister, and it ends with Michael saying, “She got what she deserved!” I am really lucky to have had a jam packed episode.”
Drew on his loyal fan base wanting to know how he is doing since the quick untimely exit from GH: “I have been doing really well, and obviously the aftermath of me leaving GH was watered-down by these awesome fans of mine. Now it’s a glorious day, and I am nominated and I have an audition to go to, and I am soaking it all up.”
Drew on his departure from GH: “Everything happens for a reason, and I have really come to terms of it quite well. And the nomination is bittersweet, but it’s a lot sweeter than it is bitter. (Laughs) I will be looking down memory lane. I am glad that the universe made that decision for me, and curtailed my time at GH….definitely sooner than I expected. It was a great experience. I embrace change . I am looking forward. It’s the new Drew. You know what? The thing is I take every experience ,and use it as a lesson. I am coming out of this even more fierce and raw than I was going into GH. Not only do I have the professional experiences under my belt, but I have also experienced the cutthroat stuff that comes with the territory.”
Drew on hitting the red carpet in Las Vegas on June 27th : “I might even bust out a tux. I mean, Vegas, the after parties, and I am 21 now. I have been to Vegas many times, but this will be my first time being 21!”

Congratulations to Drew. He truly deserves this award. I hope TPTB, realize the big mistake in letting him go. They had a great young actor in the cast, that could have done alot with the character of Michael. I’m sure he will have a great career ahead of him, and I wish him the best of luck in whatever he does. Good luck Drew on June 27th, your many fans will be rooting for you.

I really hope Drew wins because it will show how wrong they were to fire him… Lets hope another soap (like Y&R or DAYS) gets a hold of him…
Congratulations Drew!! You really deserve the Nomination really great work. Was so sorry to see you leave GH.. Wish you much happiness in all you do.. God Bless..
Dear Anne
I like you so much I what him win
What a classy young man, he kept it real! He was the absolute best younger actor GH has had in ages. He took over a role that many had waited w/anticipated breath and when he took it over many were angry at the ouster of the original Michael. But DG took it and turned it into something good, making MCJR a very exciting and controversial character. The Claudia sl was heavy and in a lesser actors hands it could have failed badly but DG stepped up and showed daytime what he is capable of. I know he’ll do great things either in daytime, primetime or the big screen. This young man is too full of talent for it to just end here!
Bad move on GH’s part! Good luck Drew…you earned the nom!
We are soo happy for Drew! He’s right this is a good thing for him now he can spread his talents else where and stay on a soap that is becoming a sinking ship. Can’t wait to you see on TV on the 27th!
Hi Amber
what day and what time that start
Congratulations Drew, You are a fantastic actor and i really miss you on General Hospital. You have a Bright Future ahead of you!
After several brief absences from the show, I actually took to the web cause I was so put off by the REWITING of MB’S character “Sonny”! I wondered if others had noticed it too! And guess what, at both his official site and other fans sites, I discovered that the answer is YES! I never have been interested in the behind the scenes ish of soaps, however the disparity in writing for his character left me wanting answers to both WHY the rewrites, and WHY the lack of diversity on soaps? RE: THE LATER, I owe my thanks to both TPTB AND GUZA! What sickens me is the Guza is bolstered by the Emmy’s or “Themmy’s” after he trashed his only diversity leading male!
However, I’m not surprised at this since Guza was just watching his own back by giving a nob to the status quo! The later is why Tom Joyner and so many others have labeled them the “Themmy’s” for years now! And probably why the Emmy’s again had trouble finding a network, cause like the Oscars, many fans consider them racist, elitist snobs SO THEY AREN’T GUARANTEED AN AUDIENCE! Guza knew that any issue would be excuse enough for the judges to turn down a diversity male! So of course, he rewrites the Claudia mess & raises the issue of criminality, but only with MB’s character “Sonny.”
MB didn’t want to do the shooting scene, however notice how TPTB then setup MB, NOT GUZA to do the interviews to excuse the writing! MB did his job as the actor: It was believable! AND WHILE I ALSO RESPECT MB FOR STANDING BY THE SHOW AND HIS COLLEAGUES, IT’S TIME THAT HIS FANS TAKE A STAND ON HIS BEHALF! For more fans than Guza/TPTB are willing to acknowledge, MB remains the reason we will watch GH! Moreover, IF he leaves we will follow!
Congratulations Drew! You deserve to win the Emmy. You did a great job as Michael and I hated to see you leave. Good luck with your career.
You are right, MB is the reason I watch GH.
CONGRATS DREW ! You deserve great things, looking forward to seeing more of you!
What a sweetheart! I couldn’t be more thrilled for anyone as much as Drew. And I am loving the way he’s handeling what ever went down that caused his exit from GH. He will have no trouble securing another job, and maybe with better bosses. It was super that Maurice called him to congratulate him. It shows the real character of a man. I wish you luck at The Emmys, Drew….
Checat, speak for yourself. Many veteran viewers like myself loathe Sonny and aren’t fond of Maurice Benard. The Sonny ship sailed long ago and Sonny should be put out to pasture. It’s unfortunate that Sonny (a man of Cuban/Greek descent) is a criminal and that there are no latino characters of substance anywhere on GH but Maurice and Sonny are popular because he’s a mobster who sometimes demonstrates that he has a heart. Sonny isn’t totally corrupt, that’s the point of the character. I would like to see Sonny dead or in jail (off-screen). He’s a waste of airtime.
THANK you Michael for contacting Drew! I was wondering how he was feeling about this nomination. He’s right: Bitter Sweet. Reminds me of Scott Clifton and the OLTL situation as well.
Nice interview
hey karen- went to wubs just now and got taken to the michael fairman site. are you having a problem with your site?? how do i find you?? hope you and your family are well. regards, har
NO Katherine, not giving in while the TPTB and the “Themmy” entitles get off easy!
Meanwhile, the fans of MB will be gracious enough in return not to trash other personal favs so that their fans can enjoy them! For the record, MB character was never written this way until recently! Prior to this he was written as a vigilante and partnered with Jason!
I agree that the recent rewrite of Sonny and his storyline history is along the lines of racial profiling and have written many letters to TPTB re: the matter! Especially since they have rewritten Jason as the exact opposite, “a hero” even! They have even gone as far as to take most of Sonny’s positive attributes ( since he was the original character in the storyline) rewriting them as Jason’s!
MB took a brief role and developed layers to the character that bridged into honor, respect and dignity! Now TPTB raises the issue of criminality, but only with MB! Mr. Benard worked twice as hard to develop not only a non-stereotypical character but a storyline that has opened the door to many other characters ( though so few have been other minorities). So, if rewrites were in order, why didn’t they do so with Steve Burton’s character, Jason since he was added to MB’s storyline?
Re: the issue of other more positive diversity characters, where are they? Which is why I also take issue with TPTB’s attempts to trash Sonny after MB’s initial Emmy win! Clearly MB has the talent to take the character in any direction, so again why was one of the few diversity leading males rewritten in such a negative way! Again, many of us view this as a bold attempt by ABC/Disney to sabotage their only diversity leading male! Those efforts also include the sudden recast of Drew G & the changes to writing of his kids. Now if Guza and Co were really this conflicted over the issues of morality & law and order why wasn’t MB invited to read for a part as a doctor, a lawyer or even a cop? Oh that’s right, most casting directors don’t see diversity males in those roles, but now they want to make MB (the actor) a fall guy for their writing decisions?
I respect MB for taking a six month role and making it a 2 decade long success, for propping other actors, like Drew, all the while overcoming Bi-polar disorder! What are the excuses for ABC/Disney, Guza & even the Emmy’s regarding their attempts to maintain a anti-diversity status quo!
I am elated that Drew Garrett won an Emmy nomination. Really hoping he wins.
I was so sad to see Drew go, he was the best. I have been trying to give the new guy a chance, but Drew played the part the best. He is going to be missed. Looking forward to see what he does next.
I am so happy for Drews nomination..I think he is a great actor and is missed terribly..I have been having a hard time getting into what should be a great storyline with Michael/Jason in prison and Sonny& Carly -the aftermath of their son going away because of their choices..I along with MANY others would like GH to wake up and bring Drew back- if this nomination doesn’t tell you what a mistake was made from firing Drew i don’t know what could!
You will be missed on GH. I loved your acting and thought you were great.. Good luck in your future plans and may God bless you and yours… lisa
