EXCLUSIVE: Michael E. Knight Pays Tribute To Former All My Children Castmate, The Late David Canary

As fans, castmates, and colleagues learned earlier this week of the passing of five-time Daytime Emmy-winning All My Children star, David Canary, people immediately went on social media sharing their sentiments and grief over the death of this icon.  Canary, for over 26 years played the incomparable Chandler twins: Adam and Stuart.  It’s a performance that will be remembered and never-to-be-seen again in the annals of the soap genre.  Canary died at age 77 at his home in Connecticut on November 16th.

One of Canary’s longtime cast members deeply affected by his passing is The Young and the Restless‘ Michael E. Knight (Simon Neville).  For it was Knight, who entered Pine Valley as Tad Martin, right around the same time as Canary.  David had just left his role of Steven Frame on Another World to take on the leading roles of Adam and Stuart on AMC.

In an exclusive conversation with On-Air On-Soaps, Knight shared his thoughts on: his beloved co-star, what David meant to daytime, their final tape day together on the set of ABC’s All My Children, the profound moment when Canary made an acting choice that would forever change the way Stuart Chandler would be played for the next 26 years, and more.  A retrospective, emotional, and candid Knight gave us a special inside glimpse into what made the actor and the man, David Canary, the most respected in his field.  Here’s what Michael expressed:

Michael on David’s immeausurable talent: “David was one of the guys I felt very fondly towards.  He was definitely one of the family.  I think he and I started on All My Children at exactly the same time.  He was the best of us.  First of all, he was a known actor.  I remember watching David on Bonanza, when I was a kid.  He was unbelievably talented and at the same time, humble and generous.  I remember his Emmy reel one year with scenes between Stuart and Adam, when Stuart’s wife on the show died of AIDS.  There was a scene at the chapel of the hospital.  I remember he was acting his heart out, and my mouth was agape.”

Michael on David Canary’s status among his peers:  “I don’t think there is anybody who dreams of being an actor who doesn’t have moments of doubt when you spend your entire life on daytime television, because we are so easy to mock.  And anybody who isn’t into what we do can take shots at us.  The fact is: there is so much about the industry that is deemed silly, and rightly so – how many times can you be married to the same person, have your kids stolen, or have amnesia, etc?  But there are certain people in this business that if I look across the room and see them, I become so proud of what I am doing, and where I am: Tony Geary (Ex-Luke, GH), Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), Eileen Davidson (Ashley, Y&R), Louis Edmonds (Ex-Langley AMC), James Mitchell (Ex-Palmer, AMC), Bob Woods (Ex-Bo, OLTL), Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH), Steve Burton (Dylan, Y&R), and David Canary was first on that list.  These are people that are good no matter where they are.  David was a beautiful guy inside and out.  He was professional, and he was the quintessential gentlemen.  David and Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica) set the tone for us at All My Children.   It’s a hard job.  It would be very easy to behave like a diva.  I’ve done it, but David was not one of those guys.  He set a very, very high mark for me, and everybody else.”

Michael recalls a touching moment with David on the final tape day of AMC: “On the day we wrapped All My Children, there was a scene we did where everyone got to say speeches, and Agnes Nixon (Creator, AMC) wrote this speech I gave as Tad.  I call it ‘The friends, neighbors, family speech.’   It was the wrap-up speech, and David was there.  While on the set, we were talking about life on the soap, and how we put in a lot of miles in between us …  and now we are looking in the rearview mirror together … and that who knew that when we met back in 1982 that we would be here now.  I was making a joke saying, ‘Who knew that I would turn into …?’   David cut me off and said, ‘… a good f**ing actor.’  When David Canary tells you that, it’s something.   When he gives you a compliment, I would like to go home and hang that on the wall!  David made all of us feel good, welcomed, and he inspired all of us.  He was always on time.  He was never late to work.  David was a powerhouse of a guy, and you better have known your lines when you worked with him … that’s for sure!” (Laughs)

Courtesy/ABC

Michael on David’s first AMC storyline, where his acting choice was  a game-changer: Adam’s first story was that he had a twin, and his twin was dangerous.  He had a housekeeper, and all of a sudden she would show up beaten up, etc.  The whole idea was Adam must be psychotic.  He is having a psychotic break, because he is doing very dangerous things: the windows are broken in the house, the housekeeper, all of these things were happening.  The reveal is that Adam has a twin.  Now initially, Stuart was supposed to be dangerous when they created the story.  However, there was a scene that was constructed like the famous black and white scene from Frankenstein, where the audience became aware that this is the twin.  This is Stuart.  He is in a room with somebody, who thinks he is Adam.  But Stuart walks in eating a cookie, and he offers the cookie to the person saying, ‘You want some cookie?’  It was in that moment where David made a choice that blew me away.  He chose to always imitate his then four-year-old son, Chris.  That is why Stuart would have that child-like ruffled hair, and that is when Stuart became this very simple soul.  All of the compassion and all of the love is within Stuart.  Adam is the ultra- male dangerous one who is out conquering the world.  The better half of his soul resides in his brother.  So, that is the moment that David discovered that Stuart, as a character, was in effect his son Chris at four.  That would live on for the next twenty plus years.  From that moment everything changed, and the writers backed him up.”

Michael on how David’s death made the news and people’s reaction to it: “When the news broke of David’s passing it hit all over the country. He is the type of guy where when you learned this, you just sit there for awhile with it very quietly.  David’s passing should be a big deal and written about.  He was huge in pop culture for decades.  If you knew anything about soaps, you certainly knew who David Canary was.  And people who don’t know soaps knew who he was!  David was a big deal.  He still is.  Everybody should be lucky enough to know somebody like him.  I can’t say it any better than that.”

So, what did you think of the sentiments, reactions, and stories shared by Michael E. Knight on his beloved former All My Children castmate, David Canary? What were you most intrigued to find out? What are your thoughts on the passing of David Canary, and what he meant to the soap industry, All My Children, and his colleagues, such as Michael? What was your favorite performance/storyline of David’s as Adam or Stuart Chandler? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

Beautiful story. I did not start watching AMC until 2000, but I loved Adam and especially, Stuart. I loved the scenes with Adam. J.R., Babe, Jamie, Tad and Dixie. I have always said when larger-than-life people die, it is so hard to believe they actually leave us. I felt the same way when Douglas Watson died from “Another World,” Beverlee McKinsey from “Guiding Light” and Frances Reid on “DOOL.” It is great to see so many people have such kind comments. I would love to hear from Cady and Jennifer Bassey.

Cady said something on Twitter. I would like to hear from Marcy (Liza) and Julia (Brooke)

Julia Barr gave a statement to SheKnows.com:

“David Canary was my TV soul mate! I could not have asked for anything more in an actor or a fellow human being. He was the essence of kindness, a gentleman and my years of playing ‘Brooke’ to his ‘Adam’ were a joy! We were all blessed to have him in our lives.”

Jennifer Bassey tweeted her condolences a few days ago. But I do understand that there are certain actors, above all others, whom we as fans need to hear from about David Canary, and for me, MEK was at the top of my list. I love that MEK told the story of the last day of taping on the AMC set and what David had said to him. That’s the kind of compliment that should be remembered often by MEK and re-told to us fans, as MEK did. I appreciate how hard it must be for anyone who worked with David as much as MEK did to give this interview, and I’m so grateful to have heard from him.

Thank you Beth

David was brilliant in every thing he did. Many years ago, I remember him saying in an interview that when he was on Peyton Place that Mia Farrow would never speak to him outside of having scenes together. For the life of me, I could never understand why she would be that way. I can only hope that now she might take a moment to count the blessing she had to have even worked with him!
RIP David and may God’s comfort hold your loved ones tightly through this very sad and difficult time.
Cheers. X

Cady McClain also issued a statement on Facebook (and posted a link to a lovely piece about him on NPR):

“Please join with me in remembering the amazing life and incredible work of my dear colleague David Canary. Sadly, I just received the news that his life has come to an end.

It’s hard to find the right words…

He was an extraordinary man… a true gentleman and artist. Exemplary in every way. I am very proud to have worked with him for so many years, and blessed to have known him. “

I want to know Kate Collins’s reaction. Their work together was extraordinary with explosive acting chemistry.

My whole childhood was around all my children I started watching at the age of 10 with my mom ..I will remember Stuart /.adam chandler for my many many years He was a sweet soul that will be remembered for a long time

Very touching ! David Canary was an acting kegend that will be missed by all, especially by the people who had the pleasure to work with him. As fans, we will miss the craziness and childlike innocence David exhibited in Adam and Stuart Chandler.

Wow amazing! Well written and well spoken and well special. I was born one year and one day after All My Children started airing. My mom got hooked on it. We used to have lunch with the show. When I was in college, I could always call my mom at noon and we’d have a long distance lunch. Then when I was home for the holidays, we’d always decorate the tree watching the show. David played all of his roles to their magical limits. But when he came to AMC he did something so amazing, something that no current actor or actress can do. He breathed life into not one but two special characters. Adam and Stuart polar opposites but played so well. He was nasty, he was nice, he was malicious, he was magical. David Canary will be missed but look at the amazing bodies of work he leaves behind. God blessed David Canary with a talent that must current soap stars just do not have. Thank you David for all you left on the canvas of video tape and film. xo

Excellent tribute, Mr. Knight indeed has evolved into a fine actor, and a fine commentator, honoring this icon in a most exemplary way. God bless the memory of David Canary.

The sister-in-law of a former coworker was in the wardrobe department over at AMC for many years and was there when both Michael Knight and David Canary joined the show. I remember asking her about the cast and who her favorite people were. Canary was high at the top of her list; some of the anecdotes Michael Knight so eloquently recounted echo much of hers; punctuality, professionalism and truly creating characters who would be as distinctive in and out of costume. 77 doesn’t quite seem long enough to have David Canary around. Knight’s sensitive and beautifully recounted moments are lovely. I think my friend’s sister-in-law would agree.

When you know someone for a very long time and they are considered a part of your family and they die, you are lost …it’s a felling like none other, I know I lost not one but 2 daughters … 26 years is a long time to work with someone. You grow attached to them. They are a part of your life. Rest In Peace David Canary … Now about the Actors. I have the utmost respect and admiration for Actors especially Soap Stars. I always said that Soap Stars have it the hardest. Soap Stars are the ones who have to memorize their lines every single day, all year, every year. Even though I know they work real hard too, Actors who make Movies are done when the Movie is finished. I Loved, Loved, Loved the Actors on AMC & OLTL … Michael E. Knight holds a special place in my Heart. I only hope he remembers why. Actors, They fill your life with such entertainment and are so very good at what they do. Wish I was mobile enough to follow them on cruises etc. because i’d be right there.

I have been waiting for Michael E Knight’s response. MEK has been pontificating about the brilliance of David Canary for years and it was through his observations where viewers like me came to fully realize just how brilliant Canary truly was.
I did not know until just now that Canary based his interpretation of Stuart on his four year old son.
What MEK says here should be read by not only AMC fans, but soap fans in general. Oh hell, it should be read by everyone.
What he says about Canary, about the craft and his (Canary’s) handling of it is incredibly insightful and poignant.
Thank you, Mr Fairrman for this interview. As usual, MEK speaks with eloquence and reverence and has a way of making the reader sgo back into time when they first experienced that complex light that is David Canary as Adam and Stuart Chandler.

I liked David so much ,I was very lucky to meet him in person at the studio and see him again at super soap weekend in Orlando. he was so nice and a real down to earth person He gave him a hug both times and we got to talk to him like you would to a friend you knew for along time . He was a great role model and a very talented actor. We miss him very much. Thank you both Michaels for sharing .

Cady did write a tribute.. it can be found on her facebook page and probably twitter. She said this:

“Please join with me in remembering the amazing life and incredible work of my dear colleague David Canary. Sadly, I just received the news that his life has come to an end.

It’s hard to find the right words…

He was an extraordinary man… a true gentleman and artist. Exemplary in every way. I am very proud to have worked with him for so many years, and blessed to have known him.

Here’s a fund set up by the family to show your respects, should you be so inclined.

http://act.alz.org/site/TR?pg=fund&fr_id=1060&pxfid=318920

She also contributed I think $150 to the Alzheimer’s association as the family had asked for donations in lieu of flowers.

wow this is a great tribute to David by Michael

Michael did a great interview. I may have never met David but I was sad to hear about his passing

Mr. Canary was a fabulous actor and I always enjoyed his scenes…even the times when I didn’t like Adam. But I always loved to hate him!

I vaguely remember the early “Stuart” references, and that he was locked in the attic and supposedly dangerous. (These were back in the day when I was working and there were no DVD/DVRs to record the shows, so I missed a lot.) So glad he turned that story around and made Stuart Adam’s better half.

Thanks MEK for your memories! It would be nice to read some of DC’s other co-stars memories.

Had watched them both all my life remember how much I cried at stuarts funeral singing high hopes! Rip adam and stuart loved u for years

well done Michael

I grew up watching All My Children. I remember being little and my mom ironing and it was on. My mom watched ABC soaps so I did. Do. I still watch General Hospital. For me David Canary was completely amazing to watch. One of the greats. But so is Michael E Knight for that matter. I am very grateful I know the true talent that they are and so happy I got to see David for so many years. It’s a huge loss to the acting and the soap opera community, but we are grateful he was here.

I want to thank Michael E. Knight for such an honest, heartfelt tribute to the Life and the Loss of the Great David Canary!

I remember waiting in line in NYC to see the a late afternoon special of The View. David walked by like a regular guy. Someone yelled “Adam”! Which I thought was cute. David turned around and chatted signed autographs and it seemed like he wanted to stay as long as the people wanted to chat. But suddenly he got a look on his face and said “what time is it?”. When told he said he had to get back go the set he was on his lunch break. He flashed that awesome grin, we melted and he jogged away.
I am a lifelong All My Children fan and always held out hope someone would see the error in ABC’s way and bring back the show. When David died my dream died. Double whammy for me. God bless you in heaven David. Thank you for all the wonderful memories. Tears flowing. Cut. Print. Scene.

I was looking at my hometown paper (Massillon, OH) on Newspaper Archives this week and looked up David. He was destined to be great as I could tell by how many articles he was mentioned in. He was always in the paper, honor roll, choir, his church, co-captain of the Massillon Tigers, football scholarship to Cincinnati, all Scholastic All American in college, etc He also remained true to his roots and loved the town he grew up in throughout his life, appearing in local theater productions. His father, Hillary, was well known in town being the manager of the downtown J.C. Penney’s for years and his dads twin Hoyt was a teacher for many years in town. He was a wonderful, talent and gracious person that we have been blessed to have upon this earth. Thank you David.

Babs…thank you, too. I grew up in Columbus, Ohio and OSU. Massillon was/is famous for it’s powerhouse football team which has produced many players who played for the Buckeyes (who beat Michigan Today). So to play football for the MTigers was a big deal. Until I read your comment I had no idea David was a jock. And this combined with all his other accomplishments! Quite a person. But I love most what he/Adam/Stuart brought to all of us fans of AMC.

Thanks for sharing it’s great to hear this type of story from someone from his hometown. I loved AMC and admired David immensely.

I enjoy telling people about what a great guy he really was. Thank you. I liked his Adam/Stuart more than any other character(s) on daytime. He was so much more like Stuart, a really pleasant person.

I have adored David Canary my entire life.I moved Heaven and earth whenever an opportunity arose to see him in person.I was Blessed to have done that a dozen times. He was the very of everything on tv,and the world is a lot less brighter without him in it.I will love him for akways, and I am so happy that all of those Co workers and friends, share my sentiments.

In 1982 we had a VCR set to channel 3 with a cable box, my mom required us to change the cable box to channel to ABC. In the summer we change the channel per her request to ABC to All My Childrearing at airtime . Thereafter this child was hooked on Adam and Stuart. Rooting for the likeable cutthroat Adam. May he rest in peace. Michael, thank you for your found words and memories. I love your work.

I loved AMC. It was a show that I was fortunate enough to share with my dad and my mom at different times. The caliber of actors on the show brought the characters to life, making us care for and believe in them. David Canary as Adam/ Stuart epitomized this. He was and is a legend. Michael Knight as Tad and his scenes with Adam were fantastic. There are no words to express the loss not only for the soap world but all of acting on the passing of Mr David Canary. I often wonder how the characters would have grown and changed over the years since AMC was cancelled. I’m sure both David and Michael would have kept us entertained and emotionally invested in our soap.

IM JUST SHOCKED. I JUST HAD AN LOSS FROM ONE LIFE TO LIVE NATHANEIL MARTSON DIED HIM SELF. I LOVED WATCHING ADAM AND STUART FOR LOVE. IT GOT TO ME WHEN ADAM FOUND STUAT A LIVE. BO DAVID CANARY AND NATHANEIL MARTSON IS IN MY HEART.

I started watching AMC in 1979 … & as an R.N. on nightshift, would set my alarm clock to get up & watch. When VCRs came out, I was the first to purchase one so I wouldn’t miss a single episode.
AMC was my one & only soap, & I fell in love with Tad Martin, & loved to hate Adam Chandler & adore Stuart. Brooke was the female I most identified with on the show, so was ecstatic when she ended up with Adam in the end 🙂
I even remember watching David as “Candy” on Bonanza as a kid…
So, he has been a part of my whole life practically.
Thank you, Michael for your touching tribute to David.
It aches my heart to know he is gone from this world. :'(

I just loved his character.. Such a phenomenal actor. He had the greatest loves and rivalries in soap history. I am so glad I was a viewer of AMC for so long and got to witness his talents. Rest in Peace David Canary.. Rest in Peace…..

I watched All My Children for many, many years – can’t even remember probably because it seemed like a daily part of my life. Adam Chandler was one of my favorite characters, as well as Tad Martin! One of my favorite times is having the two of them on screen together. As stubborn and strong willed as Adam was, Tad never put up with him. David Canary was beyond an amazing actor especially when he portrayed both Adam and Stuart in the same scene. I would completely forget it was the same actor!! It was the best when Stuart pretended to be Adam – such an amazing actor. When I found out the passing of David Canary I was so sad…I felt like a dear friend had passed. Thank you Michael E. Knight for the thoughtful and nice words about David. It’s great to know that David was not only a great actor but a truly wonderful person.

I was so sad to hear about the passing of David Canary. He was a brilliant star and one of the greatest performers for a lone time. His passing will leave a sadness to many friend’s and costars. David’s work speaks for itself. I too would like to hear a response from Julia Barr and many other costars. Michael E. Night (Tad) gave a wonderful job giving this presentation of David Canary. I loved for many years his playing Adam and Stuart. I always enjoyed him in both roles. He was so talented and such a wonderful star. He will be missed by many. Thank you David for so many years of happiness and some sad times as well as Adam and Stuart. To all who had the time to work with David Canary from All My Children and Bonanza I send my deepest condolences. May the love and grace of God be with all of us today and everyday forevermore. And please always remember David Canary for the great man he was and his loyalty to his co-workers.

Thank you Michael for that interesting insight on how the characters of Adam/Stuart came to be. As I stated on FB David Canary played his dual role seamlessly!! RIP David Canary. He was a master at his craft. I am curious if he did suffer from Alzheimer’s since that’s were donations are asked to go. I am unfortunately going thru that with my dad a, who just recently went into assisted care. I have watched AMC since its conception till the bitter end and grew up with it. I will always cherish the cast and their story lines that made Pine Valley a great place to be. Glad that many have found work post AMC , including you Michael!!

Michael you did an amazing tribute for David Canary. This is something ABC should have done. I remember many many times you both fought about issues and we’re both professional at your roles. I still think ABC should hold a tribute for him. They have don’t that in the last for other actors/actresses. I’ve been watching AMC since I was 16 and until the finale. Was very sad to see the end of a great SOAP. Thank you Michael for giving such a wonderful tribute to an amazing man who will forever be remembered as one of the best iconic SOAP stars in history. We love you all and so miss AMC. Happy holidays to all.

I started watching AMC right from the start and felt that all the characters were like family. As fans we all got to enjoy the show and the felt like we knew them. MEK wrote a wonderful tribute for David. The world lost a very talented, kind man. His wife, children & family lost a very loving husband, father, friend. There are too many moments in his acting career that were fabulous and to many to count. We will miss you David.

I was one of the people who was shocked & just sat in grief.
Michael hit the nail on the head. David was a class act, you could tell he took his role very seriously. I don’t know or can i imagine anyone who didnt’ think this man could act.
I can’t pick just ONE favorite part or time or scene, as every one of the scenes or any actor he was in a scene with had great chemistry with him.
It just breaks my heart we will never see him come back in case amc comes back to tv. He could make you so mad in a scene with his anger that you could just slap the crap out of him, while in another scene playing Stuart, he could melt your heart.
He was as sweet as he was mean in 2 different characters & you really thought it was 2 different people…NOW THATS GREAT ACTING!
HE WILL be sorely missed all over the world by all different people.
Thank you David for allll the entertainment you brought to the screen!!!

I grew up watching Bonanza, and watched All My Children from day one. I don’t think I ever missed an episode. My Mom and I watched together. As much as I loved all the characters and actors, David Canary made this show. He was the J.R. Ewing of AMC. It just wouldn’t have been the same without him. Of course my second love has to be MEK. He was the one who made my heart skip a beat. I am and always will be Tadders girl.

Thank you Mr. Canary for so many hours of entertainment and great performances.

Well said. I remember David Canary saying he preferred playing Stuart I think it was because there are a million Adams in soaps but only one Stuart. Adam and Stuart were as opposite as two soap characters could be and they were played by one amazing actor RIP David Canary

This is amazing. Thank you to both Michael Fairman and Michael E Knight. This is an absolutely beautiful remembrance of David Canary. My God, Mr. Knight, you made me cry all over again.

How amazing that David Canary created the characterization of Stuart against what was intended. And I cannot imagine how honored Michael Knight must have felt to have David Canary call him a great f**king actor. David Canary was probably the greatest actor ever in Daytime.

Losing David Canary actually feels worse to me than losing AMC itself. My sympathies go out to his family and friends.

Thank you so very much, Mr. Fairman and Mr Knight, for bringing this to us.

My favorite scene was Stuart walking in the park with Scott and taling to him. So many scences with Adam and Stuart were awesome. He was such a great actor. I love and miss AMC … Michael Knight’s comments so sweet and truth bearing. I love Michael too and was glad to see him again on Y&R. Michael is a great actor too. Hope he continues to be on Y&R since I’m not sure what the writers have in mind for Dr. Neville. I only started watching that Soap after AMC and OLTL went off the air.

I watched All My Children for many years, mostly to see David Canary at his best. I loved when Adam and Stuart interacted together. He will be missed!!!

I GREW UP WATCHING ALL MY CHILDREN I’LL NEVER FORGET DAVID CANERY AS ADAM AND SUART. I WSHED THE ACTRESSES WHO PLAYED COLBY WOULD SOME THING ABOUT HIM AND ADAM MAYFIELD WHO PLAYED SCOTT AND BOBBIE EASKS WHO PLAYED KRYSTAL.

I WATCHED ALL MY CHILDREN EVER SICNE I GREW UP. I WISHED THE ACTRESSES WHO PLAYED COLBY COULD OF SAY SOMETHING ABOUT HIM INCLUDING BOBBIE EAKS AND ADAM MAYFEILD.

I LOVED WAHT MICHALE E. KNIGHT SAID ABOUT DAVID AND SAME WITH JOHN CALLHAN. I LOVE JOHN CALLHAN WHEN HE WAS ON ALL MY CHILDREN AND SAME WITH TAD. SAME WITH WALT WILLEY AS JACKSON.

I remember in Mr. Canary’s early years on the show, with the sweet simple soul Michael E. Knight talked about, Stuart seemed to me very slightly intellectually handicapped. I worried a bit when writers first had Stuart in a romantic relationship, that it was inappropriate, that whoever it was could easily take advantage of Stewart. He was hurt very badly at times by women, worst of all when Adam was involved. (Gloria).

I hadn’t watched the show, or any soap, for over ten years when AMC went off the air, but Stuart will always remain one of my top five favorite characters. Stuart was sunshine and goodness.

Mark Consuelos Celebrates One-Year Anniversary as Co-Host of ‘Live’ Alongside Kelly Ripa

Today, April 17th marks a full-year since Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo, All My Children) took over the co-hosting duties of ‘Live” alongside his wife, and longtime co-host, Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, All My Children).

Consuelos replaced Ryan Seacrest who are six seasons decided to be back on the west coast full-time. For Consuelos, now having the opportunity to work off of Ripa as co-hosts has been something of adjustment for him, but viewers have been eating it up.

Live with Kelly and Mark has remained the No. 1 entertainment talk show on television over the past year, growing 3% in average total viewers to 2.23M per episode.  It is also the most-watched daytime talk show in the last year in key demos of women 18-49 and women 25-54. All of this, since the real-life marrieds teamed-up.

Photo: ABC

Speaking with Deadline, Kelly Ripa shared why the two are gelling on-screen, “I do think that there is something very possibly relatable about our relationship. We have disagreements like a normal couple, and we’re not afraid to let them unfold on the air and in front of America, and I think people find a lot of themselves in that.”

Mark weighed in how he has progressed as a host, and what he could improve at, sharing, “I’d like to get better at my interviewing skills. I’d like to get better at reading a teleprompter…I think I’m getting better at throwing to commercial. The other day in the middle of the show as we go to commercial, my sign off was ‘See you guys around.’ I mean, the show wasn’t over. The most obvious thing to say would be, ‘We’ll be back right after this.’ But I just said, ‘See you around.’ So we went to commercial and one of the producers (goes) ‘What was that?’ I don’t know… So for the next few sign offs, as a joke, I’d say ‘See you around.’ We got a kick out of it.”

Photo: ABC

Meanwhile, Kelly has given huge props to Mark, “I find Mark utterly compelling, really interesting, super funny, and he’s bold in a way like nobody else. He says what’s on his mind. If he’s thinking it, he says it.  I’ve done this a long time and oftentimes people will adjust their natural personalities to pander to what they think the audience wants to hear, and Mark will tell people what he thinks, and he doesn’t care if it’s not a popular opinion. It gives him an edginess that I think is really missing in the landscape today. Everybody’s so afraid to say anything, and Mark is unafraid to say exactly what he’s thinking.”

In a statement, Debra O’Connell, President News Group and Networks, Disney Entertainment shared, We could not be more thrilled with how Mark has seamlessly joined the show family as permanent co-host. His undeniable charisma and his and Kelly’s natural chemistry are evident as they deliver the laughs and smiles to our viewers each morning. We are incredibly proud of how Live has continued to evolve and that the audience is responding so enthusiastically.”

So, do you think Mark Consuelos is the best co-host his wife Kelly Ripa has ever had on ‘Live’? How would you say he is doing as co-host after one full year on the job? Comment below.
