GENERAL HOSPITAL: What Is Happening To Sam?

Viewers of ABC’s General Hospital have noticed over several episodes that Sam (Kelly Monaco) seems to be stressed, anxious, upset, overly-concerned at times for her, perhaps a bit paranoid, and then on Friday’s episode she has some disturbing hallucinations of blood dripping down Jason’s (Billy Miller) face, while he is standing in front of her seemingly just fine.
As we fade to black on this week’s cliffhanger, she tells Jason she is not fine. Clearly something is amiss, but what is truly going on with Sam?
Is this the Cassadine Curse rearing its ugly head on her, since Helena cursed her before her death? Is she suffering from some medical ailment that has yet to be discovered? Is some deep-rooted trauma coming to the surface?
GH fans are trying to figure it out given that it does not seem that Jason, Sam, Liz (Rebecca Herbst), and Jake *Hudson West) are in the clear even though Jason believes so after finding Costa on the hospital roof top, fighting with him, and then having him arrested.
So, weigh-in below. What do you think is happening to Sam?

You mentioned jake/Liz and I pray they are no longer part of this story. I get wanting to protect a child but tbh jake has been front and center ad nauseum over the past two years. Enough already.
This story should be about sam and by extension jason. I’m thinking its ptsd and no matter the outcome jasam are stronger than ever before
Yes, Michael. I have enumerated a few reasons with Shay, on the “Sheila Carter ” site.
Postpartum depression; Helena’s curse; Costa, somehow, spiking her drink, but, I think that’s a temporary affliction…LOL, it’s a soap, TPTB can “dress” the malady any way they want…..a brain infection, perhaps?
I think it’s more physical than psychological, as I had stated, she looks very clammy.
I went as far as to question Scout’s safety. “Not for nothing”, Michael, not one bit interested…LOL.
She learned Tony Geary is up for an emmy for best brief non speaking appearance during Tracy’s exit storyline-lol
@CeeCee….Or else Kelly and “Sam” are just so utterly bored to the point of stupefaction with yet another ridiculous GH storyline! I’ll go with that one, since no other explanation shall suffice in nearly as satisfying a manner as what I’m positing….However, I do hope Scout is not endangered….I’m way over sick baby drama! Enough of that already… along with blaming Helena for everything that goes awry in Port Charles!
P.S. Then again, just having Alexis as a mother would be enough to drive any sane person around the bend….at least twice! How cringeworthy and embarrassing it would be to have such an unstable maternal figure who paraded herself around clad hell-for-leather as a past-her-prime walking doxy advertisement….and yes, I’m sure as my highly-literate amica, you know that such a term, though somewhat archaic, can be used to generically describe any “lover,” particularly one lacking in moral turpitude, a “loose woman,” so to speak….I’ll leave it at that!

Postpartum Psychosis (PPP)
Postpartum psychosis (PPP) is the most severe form of postpartum depression, but fortunately it is the rarest form. It occurs in 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 pregnancies. The onset is very sudden and severe, normally within 2 to 3 weeks after giving birth.
Symptoms are characterized by a loss of touch with reality and can include:
Bizarre behavior
Suicidal thoughts
Hallucinations and/or delusions
Thoughts of hurting the baby
Rapid mood swings
Hyperactivity
Postpartum psychosis is considered a medical emergency and should be treated immediately.
I believe it is a brain tumor or brain ot.

Thank for publishing all the info. I’ve seen psychosis in family members, so PP psychosis was my first thought. I think it would fantastic for GH to tackle a real illness like Y&R is tackling MS.

Hmm…I think it may turn out to be something simple like Jake mixed up a glass of special coolaid for Sam (recipe Helena forced him to memorize) and now her brain is misfiring… Yep, I’m sure that’s it!
Of the ongoing storylines, this is as dull as Sonny and Carly.
This week the highlights came from the mouths of babes. Spencer telling it like it is to Laura at Lulu’s and Joss giving the honest truth to Carly. Throw in Aunt Stella ripping into Jordan and we finally have characters speaking for the viewers.

I think in her life she has dealt with so much that finally it has become more than she can bear, the thought of possibly losing her husband again, not knowing what happened during those two years. They need to dump the Liz/jJake part & go on with a story of their own & from what I have heard that is the story coming up. I think now it will be Jason & Sam dealing with it all.
Perhaps, whatever ails Sam will forever shut her monotone ( translation: one tone) voice/mouth. That way, no talkie—she will be forced to communicate via computer—whatever electronic device. Blessed day!!

I doubt it, though. Jason is always running somewhere to rescue someone….especialky Sonny. Jason is his lackey. Sonny commands “JUMP”; Jason answers, “how high, S-iir”, with a salute.
And, Sam ( I like Kelly, not the character) is just part of the scenery. No personality, no pizzazz, in my opinion.

It’s Helena’s curse. Another possibility is postpartum psychosis.
I hope it’s PTSD or something along those lines and not some brain tumor like the Franco story. It makes sense that after everything Sam has been through in her entire life it would just now peek it’s ugly head because Sam finally has everything she ever wanted. Let’s hope this only makes Jason and Sam stronger than they ever have been.

And what does he EVER say back to her or to anyone else. Sound mixing doesn’t help; the dramatic music drowns out the dialogue of several actors; most notably Billy Miller, then Kelly. I’m about to stop watching since I can’t understand half the dialogue. I can understand every word on Young and Restless, even Billy Miller when he was on there.
You’re absolutely right, Becky. The same problem is affecting movies and prime time. My hearing is perfectly fine and yet I find myself putting the captions up just to get through an episode of LAW AND ORDER SVU. And, to me, Billy’s voice is a real turn-on, so I want to hear it!
I can’t stand the character. Monotone Sam and Emotionless Jason are BO-RING! There is NO spark.
Let’s all raise our hands if we think this will be a decent storyline? Nope no hands raised I feel very sorry for a cast that is sinking on the titanic!

Well, Jimmy…it seems that Sam, whatever she uttered unintelligibly, with her usual husky whispering, as she woke suddenly, does not bode well. I think Jason is safe….the knife is to protect him.
However, Sam has killing on her mind. Who will it be? LOL.
You are probably speaking the gospel truth, Jim. This storyline reeks (as do many) of “Let’s have Sam have lots of strange, confusing visions”–we can figure out why later, it doesn’t really have to make sense. (Since Carlivati confessed that the show had changed the Fluke story when viewers guessed Bill Eckert early on, I just have had no faith whatsoever that GH has any real story plans beyond the day after tomorrow.)
I think it has something to do with Helena…the curse…possibly the chimera. Whatever it is, it seems that the people around her are oblivious that her nose is running, her eyes are pouring tears, she’s got a transfixed look like she’s in catatonic shock…and yet…

If you recall, McCall went missing when the gang was held up on Cassadine Island. Then returns a day later, mysteriously pregnant and now post delivery the curse seems to have been invoked. Seems this was part of Miss Helena’s plan all along with Jake and Jason along for the ride and the return of Spencer very timely as he will save the day!

Actually, I’d forgotten about the Island events…but yes, I do think this is more than PTSD or any such thing. The chimera story isn’t over. LOL. Spencer saving the day? Maybe…but I’m thinking Nicolas might come back in the form of another actor…which will also tie into story with Valentin….
Yes, Grant….a brain infection was one of my guesses. Good point, you make. She may have “contracted” a cerebral dysfunction (LOL) on the island with the help of Helena’s henchman.
The mumbling? No change there. Sam’s diction has always been crippled.
You may have planted a seed in my head about Sam’s pregnancy, though. It makes me question
the legitimacy of Scout’s paternity. Is Jason truly her father?
Hmmmmm. The devil’s spawn? Was Sam inseminated by Helena’s evil hand?
Indeed, when Sam went missing barely a year ago under the hands of Valentine the paternity or Emily Scout should indeed be in question. The writers certainly play the long game, Helena killed off in summer of 2015, hostage crisis in summer ’16 and here we are in 2017 with more Cassadine riddles in the form of Jake, Spencer and the curse of Sam Morgan.
I still think Jake and Charlotte are going to be connected by the chimera or some experiment caused by Helena.

I have to admit, though, I like Sam. Well…I like the mom/daughter relationship with Alexis. Hate how she went from resenting Carly to being warm and friendly with her. Also not thrilled with her loyalty to Sonny over her own father (even before Julian’s “fall.”) Wait! DO I like her??? Ummmm…most of the time. 😉

This is a great story line for Sam and I loving how it is being handled. Yes, she has P.T.S.D. after being traumatized by her Aunt, father, mother and having the baby in the manner that she did. Who wouldn’t break down after surviving all that madness. Kudos GH!

Well, I am glad that, at least, you are enjoying the storyline.
However, I see that most here are not too reticent in expressing their true feelings of this couple ( Jason and Sam). Most are outright funny, LOL.
Yeah, poor Sam went through he!!. She tumbled down a gully, with a big belly ( it’s a wonder she survived)….how did the neonate survive the freezing cold? And, let’s not forget she gave birth with her pants on. That whole scene was designed and written for idiots….and, we are not idiots.
This is so ridiculous, sooo out of touch with reality, even for a soap; that it will lead to nothing. A big fat, hollow zero. I would get into the story if I thought it would bear juicy fruit. But, the writing on the wall is telling me that the climax will be as succulent as Fluke’s.
There is no suspense. I could buy some of the nonsense with a modicum of “crescendo’ ….but, nothing. ….not intense enough… no passion….Alexis’ warped thinking, where Julian is concerned , captures my attention more. And, that’s saying a lot.
The Helena story with her cohorts doing her dirty work by brainwashing, is played out. It would have a fascinating effect if the Queen of Darkness appeared in person….not as an idea that she’s behind all the shenanigans going on.
I’m sorry, but the character of Sam does not elicit either sympathy or interest for me. I cannot get into her and Jason…. or any storyline involving them. Their conversations kill my adrenal glands…zap!
U know, u sound like some many people when we return from the Gulf War…it wasn’t a “real” War, they are “goldbricking” and etc. It is great that they are showing a character, who is normally very strong & willed, finally break. To many folks the writing is not what “you” want but I believe this storyline shows how vulnerable we are and how easily we can break. Yes, it is a “soap” which usually takes a storyline out there but I give them a B+ for effort to educate. 🙂

I watched a little of today’s (Monday) episode while at home for lunch. So, Monotone “Jasam” are on 3-4 hours of sleep, have Monica watching the kids, and are complaining of sleep deprivation. I’m sorry, do either of them work? Yet, they have time to “get busy.” To TPTB, please stop the insanity! These two have no chemistry and their boring dialogue is barely audible!
Oh, and can TPTB find another avenue to take with “Carson” besides Sonny, the father of half of Port Charles, a man in what, his 50’s, playing these childish games- trying to whisk Carly away to his private island on his private jet. Seriously, how many women have we seen him whisk away on his jet to the island, where there is a dress (in her size, perfect size, btw) in a beautiful box on the bed, waiting for her…ICK!

It’s become apparent that the current writers prefer to believe that AJ never returned in 2013. The problem for them is the viewers remember. We see Sonny for the sanctimonious dweeb that he is.

Whatever it is, I hope Sam, Jason, Carly, and Sonny leave the country to try and find the cure and are never seen or heard from again. Maurice leaving or Varni leaving ABC is the only things that will save GH.
Kelly & Billy (JASAM) are the ONLY reason I still watch GH. So whatever the story I am just excited they are finally getting one and hopefully it takes them far away from the bore of Franco & Liz and Jake the mistake.
I find Elizabeth to be one of the most boring characters on the show, myself.

For people who care nothing about Sam & this story there sure are a lot of comments. People don’t take the time to comment if there is no interest. I suggest possibly maybe hearing aids might help because I don’t have a problem hearing what they are saying. I will always love Sam & I think she is one of the best actress on the show. This is a great story & I am going to enjoy Billy & Kelly & how the portray a couple that is so much in love. They are absolutely so good together & I really don’t think I will be disappointed with this story.
I’m with you lovesam1122. I’ve always liked Sam…I don’t like some of the things she’s done and her attitude at times…but I find the character down-to-earth and relatable. She’s a “hangin’ out kinda chick…” not pretentious, snobby, materialistic. I like that. And she’s loyal. What I don’t like which I’ve mentioned before is her new friendship with Carly…(not sure if you’re a Carly fan but I can’t stand her)…and I would like her to give Julian a break. (LOL..many no longer like Julian because of what he did but I’m still a great fan of the character).
Anyway, I’m curious to see where this story leads and I think Billy as Jason (even though he no longer seems like the old Jason) and Kelly have great chemistry.
With that said…the writers have got to stop dressing Sam and Jason as twinsies! They’ve been doing it for years and it’s ridiculous! 😉
The best chemistry Kelly has ever ad on this show was when Greg Vaughn was playing Lucky ! The hot tub scene was smoking she has never had that chemistry before or sense
Monaco has better chemistry with Miller than she had all those years with Burton. When Easton first came on as John McBain, they really played off each other well. Despite being the same actor, the magic wasn’t there with Silas, as that character sucked the life out of every screen partner.
I tend to forget the short-lived romance with GV’s Lucky, because once JJ returned, you couldn’t picture Sam & Lucky as a couple. Her pairing with Patrick really never took off as he was destined to return to Robin.
My disdain is more for Sonny than anyone else. I actually really like Carly when she’s on her own and not in the mumbling mobsters orbit. I find Jason and Sam to be a sleep inducing and the fact that Kelly and Billy dated (maybe they still are?) blows my mind as I simply don’t see any chemistry.
Any character that is written in true hypocrisy simply to prop Sonny can never be redeemed as long as Sonny is still on the show. Sam can’t stand her father but is completely OK with Jason and Sonny and the violence they bring. Olivia is another example. Yesterday she tells Ned that she doesn’t want Julian around her son but fails to have any issues with her other son, Dante hanging out with his dad Sonny, who by the way, shot his son who was unarmed. Another example is Sonny wanting revenge for Ava changing Morgan’s meds but we’re all supposed to look the other way when Sonny killed AJ.
The examples of the pure hypocrisy in the name of Sonny is endless. This is what happens when Varni decides that the moral center is an evil man. When that happens the hypocrisy cannot be ignored and characters and stories ring hallow.
Get Sam and Jason out of Sonny’s orbit and I may begin to like them. Have them recognize their own misdeeds, have them hate Sonny for the sins he’s done or write Sam to forgive her father. It’s really simple, really.
I will dance a jig of glee if and when Maurice decides to leave GH for good. That’s the only way to fix the mess GH has found itself.
I completely agree with you. I’ve written the exact thoughts. Where we disagree is Carly. I absolutely can’t stand her. I hated her when she constantly took Jason’s attention away from Sam (Jason per Steve Burton), I hated her when she was a complete bitch to AJ and everything she did to him and took from him, I hated how she treated Robin, Alexis, Franco…I hate that she cheated on Jax AND Franco, both men loved her completely and were beyond good to her. I hate the hypocrite that she is…how she, too, judges Julian but worships Sonny…criticizes Alexis for being with Julian all the while she’s running back to Sonny…I hate that she damned Ava for switching Morgan’s meds when she doused AJ with alcohol while he was passed out and made him and everyone around him think he had relapsed. UGH!!! LOL! I hate her!

I also find it odd that while Joss was complaining to Michael about Sonny that he didn’t say he understood…that he went through something similar when Sonny killed AJ. But no, Michael never brings AJ up. It’s ridiculous and aggravating.
After reading your comment I’ve decided to hate Carly too! LOL. The reason I typically like Carly when she’s out of Sonny’s orbit is that her hypocrisy tends to calm down as they don’t write her as Sonny’s defender. To defend Sonny in ANYTHING is to ramp up the defenders hypocrisy. And great point about Michael not mentioning his background with Sonny and killing AJ. Too be honest, I stopped watching GH about 6 months ago because the pro-Sonny writing was too much for me. I began to hate all of the characters.
F Valentini and N Varni rely heavily on Facebook to gauge feedback on the show and if you spend more than 30 seconds on the GH Facebook page you’ll see that the vast majority of those rubes love Sonny and therefore GH continues to cater to the pro-Sonny crowd as GH incorrectly believes that pro-Sonny is what viewers want. Ratings prove otherwise. When GH sails off into the sunset it will be those pro-Sonny rubes who are to blame but they will never see that reality.
Believe it or not, Scott5…I actually abhor Carly MORE than Sonny. Just gets on my last nerve! I hear ya about the GH page, etc…maybe they should literally test out the theory, take him off the canvas for about a month…throw back in Mac and Scorpio…and see if the ratings spike or dip.

What I witnessed today was once again no one can have a storyline on this show of their own that does not involve MB/Sonny and if you don’t think their are some actors on this show that are disgusted with that then I have some land to sell you for 1.00 an acre. Shame on FV , Varvi and ABC for catering to a mediocre actor at best at the expense of a once great show. I guit watching when JFP did it now FV is also kissing the ring . UGH
I soooo understand your frustration, Kay….The veneration of Sonny holds us hostage. Perhaps, GH will erect a monument in commemoration of St. Sonny ( a calvary), where all the lowly PC commoners will be able to kneel before his grace, in worship.
OH, NO!!!! Sonny’s life is in peril…Everyone to the rescue!!!!!!……the writing is really going too far with this character. I, honestly, don’t get the adoration and attraction.
Sonny should visit Cabo Rojo ( gorgeous cliffs , arches, caves etc—reminiscent of Gay Head in MV) while in PR, and scale those craggy cliffs….never to be seen again.

Soap fans have been arguing, debating and fighting about everything under the sun but where they do come together is their mutual hatred of Sonny.
We are sick of him, he’s dragging down ratings and taking up too much air time.
I get that he’s the new Luke as far as being the king of the hill is concerned but what makes this so intolerable is that Tony Geary would take entire summers off therefore giving fans a much needed break from his character. Maurice Benard never ever takes any time off. Why won’t the EP listen to the fans about the over saturation of Sonny?

If we are resigned to having Sonny front and center, can we at least get MB a Tony Geary style contract where he takes a four month vacation every year? Sonny-less Summers would make things a bit more palatable.
I think Michael should offer Sonny the job instead of Jason and send him on business trips that keep him out of Port Charles and off the air for weeks on end. (or without end…depending on your view.) Perhaps there’s sooooo much territory to cover that Carly can go, too.
While I’d agree to almost anything that gets Sonny off the canvas, I’d probably stop watching if he infiltrated ELQ in anyway. Michael would be out of a job if he even mentioned that idea to the other Qs.

So I know there’s something wrong with Sam but seriously? She’s acting quite normal, or as anyone should act if his/her husband is always putting his life in danger, always rushing to put himself again and again in the line of fire, seems to have little regard for his own life/safety or the fact that he’d already “lost his life” to the same type of behavior…guarding Sonny…seems to give no consideration to the fact that he has a wife, three children, one being a newborn…. I mean, if you think about it, Sam’s reaction is completely normal under the circumstances and her lack of such a reaction in the past is more abnormal. Which of us wouldn’t be freaked out, angry, resentful, nervous, fearful, etc given all the chances “Jason” takes?
To top it off…for what??? Sonny barely appreciates it. Sonny’s pissed because the “old” Jason would have taken his place (putting his life in jeopardy again) so that, he, Sonny, can retire.

It’s very possible she has a TBI and PTSD. Two things that go undiagnosed all the time in real life. She did get pushed off a bridge. If they go with this I hope they don’t minimalize this condition with some magic treatment .
She may have the beginnings or symptoms of a brain tumor.

General Hospital’s Adam J. Harrington Weighs-in On John and Carly, and How it’s ‘Starting to Get Very Complicated”
On recent episodes of General Hospital, Carly (Laura Wright) came to John “Jagger” Cates (Adam Harrington) rescue as he was beaten down in an assault. Carly put on her “nurses cap,” sort of speak, and got John to his hotel room and watched over to him, to make sure he didn’t lose consciousness.
GH fans also got their first glimpse of what may be a new romance for Carly, if she and John continue to bond. If John and Carly were to have a relationship, it would certainly have a ripple effect with Jason (Steve Burton) and Sonny (Maurice Benard).
Adam J. Harrington shared his view on the scenes and what might be next between the two. Speaking to Soap Opera Digest, Harrington shared, “I thought it was written in a way where there’s an understanding and a respect between them both. I don’t think there was any moment where she was not aware that he’s an FBI agent, and there was no moment that he wasn’t aware of her history and relationship to other people in the town. I really liked it. I was really looking forward to shooting it with Laura and we had a really nice time shooting it.”

When Carly and John part ways, it seems there were some romantic sparks, as Harrington puts it, “Isn’t that interesting that sometimes with people, the one moment they actually show how they feel is when they know there’s an escape hatch. They know they’re about to walk away. So, it’s almost safe in that moment to do it. I thought that was really special about how (the writers) handled John and Carly. Even the music in that scene was beautifully done.”
Where is this all heading? Conflict! Internally and professionally, and as Adam explains, “Who Carly was to John on paper as just a tool to be used as bait is starting to get very complicated.”

General Hospital’s Steve Burton Reveals the Emotional Scene He Almost Could Not Get Through
On a recent episode of General Hospital, Jason received a message from his mother, Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) via a note. The effect it had on Jason’s portrayer, Steve Burton turned out to be quite visceral.
As GH fans know, although Jason’s bio-mom was Susan Moore, he was raised and adopted by Monica. Speaking on his Daily Drama podcast with his co-host and GH co-star, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), Steve shared some insight on the difficulties he had getting through that scene.
Burton shared that in the key moment, “Brooklyn (played by Amanda Setton) came in and that’s where she gave me (Jason) the letter from Monica. That was a very hard scene for me to do. That was a tough one. That was the one time I was almost going to call ‘cut!’ It read ‘Jason, I believe in you.’ I was literally going to walk off the set.”

To clarify and in the story, Monica was saying “I believe in you” and that she knows Jason didn’t shoot Dante (Dominic Zamprogna). Steve added, “It was tough, man. Emotionally, it was a tough scene. It was overwhelming in the moment.”
Steve went on to detail to Anderson, “She (Brook Lynn) pushed it to me and I read it and she was walking out and I had to stop her, but I was so emotional I couldn’t even get it out. And at that point, I’m like, ‘Do I just keep going … or do I just walk off the set right now?’ But, I knew just to stay, because it’s so hard to get back there, once you shut it down. I knew, the next take wasn’t going to be the same.”

It’s clear that Leslie Charleson is so missed on-screen as Monica by all of her castmates, and that Jason and Monica had a very special mother/son relationship throughout the decades on GH.

George Russo to Appear on General Hospital as Carmine Cerullo
Coming up, it looks like Brook Lynn’s (Amanda Setton) grandfather, Carmine Cerullo is headed to Port Charles.
According to casting news from the ABC soap opera, George Russo will take on the role. Russo will tape his episode next week on April 15th and will appear on the May 15th episode of the long-running daytime drama series.
If George looks familiar he has been in numerous primetime television shows and motion pictures including: The Offer. Winning Time, Grand Crew and Shameless.

Longtime GH viewers will recall that Lois’ (Rena Sofer) dad, Carmine, was previously showed up in Port Charles on and off from 1994 to 1996 and was played by John Capudice.
Clearly, it seems that Carmine will be a part of Chase (Josh Swickard) and Brook Lynn’s wedding. Will it go off without a hitch? Are you looking forward to it? Stay tuned.
