GH's Anthony Geary On His Issues With Luke & Laura And Polonium Poisoning!

In an extremely candid interview with TV Guide Magazine’s Michael Logan, the actor who has won seven Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor (more than any other performer) Anthony Geary,  talks about his current and past life as Luke Spencer on General Hospital!

Geary, whose performances are some of the finest in television history, spoke on why he does not see a future for super couple, Luke and Laura (Genie Francis),  unless something were to drastically change.  Tony also talks about Luke’s current on-screen situation where he finds himself near death if he does not get the antidote for polonium poisoning!

When answering the question, what does Geary have to say to the fans that want Luke and Laura back together?  Geary related,  “The past is best left in the memory. Nothing stays the same except butterflies under glass. In drama, there has to be conflict and movement. There is nothing less interesting to me than the thought of a 65-year-old man making goo-goo eyes as he feeds his wife strawberries and they forever relive their glory days. The viewers you speak of have always wanted Luke and Laura happy and growing old together like Ward and June Cleaver.  They’re like a child who never got over his parents’ divorce and lives in perennial hope that mommy and daddy will get back together again. For a variety of reasons, that is not going to happen. The audience needs to let it go and find interest in tomorrow instead of yesterday.”

Although there are no plans to kill-off Luke Spencer, even with fateful polonium poisoning, Geary weighed-in on if he ever did leave the show how he would want to exit:  “If I ever do leave GH — not something I want to see happen anytime soon — I want Luke to die. I don’t want him coming home for Christmas episodes or the birth of his great grandchildren. I would prefer to have him go out in a blaze of glory and also that it be the climax of a wonderful story that involves the entire community, rather than some inconsequential B plot. Remember how The Bold and the Beautiful got rid of our wonderful Susan Flannery? That was a terrific story, really sensational, and you couldn’t do it with a better actress. ”

So GH viewers, after reading the article from TVG in total, do you understand Tony’s feelings on not wanting to rekindle Luke and Laura?  Do you agree that if Luke should be given the most dramatic send-off honoring this legacy character if Tony were to ever leave the show permanently?

I Love GH

I completely get it, and quite frankly, feel that Tracy is his soul mate. Love Luke & Laura! I love their scenes and want them to continue being the supports they are for each other. That said, Tracy gets him and accepts him while calling him out when he’s wrong. You can’t ask for more than that from your life partner.

Having watched the show since Laura & Scotty’s first marriage, I agree completely. My hope if that Geary outlasts me, but should he retire Luke absolutely needs to go out in a big way. I can see him imploding a building onto himself, thinking he’s going to pull it off like he always does, but he’s slower than his glory days and doesn’t quite make it. It should never be a mundane death for Luke Spencer. He should face death laughing, knowing he screwed himself over with an arrogant miscalculation.

He’s a jackass. The audience is tired of being told to get interested in things that aren’t interesting.

Then the audience should find something else to watch.

Where are the millions who followed Luke and Laura? The soap audience has moved on.

He is not a jackass. Quite the contrary! His analogy of kids wanting their parents to get back together after they split was spot on. Luke and Laura were amazing back in the day. Times change, people change, relationships change. It’s obvious they will always have a connection, a bond, a loyalty…but it’s Tracy who’s been with him all these years…they have a dynamic push and pull…a very witty banter…and both are schemers. They’re very entertaining and touching to watch…and it’s been great to see Tracy’s attachment to Lulu as well.

I would actually like to see more screen time for Scotty. Always felt bad for him and his unrequited love for Laura. I’d like to see their relationship develop. I also love his rapport with Lucy…though I also like Doc!

Obviously all is contingent upon whether the writers decide to give any real time to the characters of Laura, Scotty, Lucy and Doc. So far they’ve only been a tease. We see them…and then they disappear for weeks on end.

I agree Rebecca, re: Luke and Tracy minus Laura. However absolutely disagree regarding Scotty. I have NEVER liked him and can’t stand seeing him at all. I love Lucy, but don’t care if she’s on or not. Rather they stick with the big stories like they have been. And definitely would like to see Luke go out (ONly if he HAD to) in a huge blaze of glory. Not missing AJ at all either. He nauseates me like Scotty does. The stuff they are doing now is AWESOME !!!!

Tracy and Luke are an exercise in mutual degradation, nothing more and nothing less. They have zero sexual or romantic chemistry, despite Geary’s desperation in calling Tracy “Spanky Buns” so that we can all imagine them having rough sex. Just pathetic. The action adventurers in their 60’s is laughably absurd and more fitting for Saturday cartoons than anything else. If Geary doesn’t want to do LnL fine. Bring back Genie Francis along with Stephen Nichols. Sparks between them fly and Genie at least increases the ratings when she comes back. Geary doesn’t even do that because his six months on, six months off arrangement is old hat.

I can’t disagree with Geary on Luke and Laura not being together again—GH has kinda made us lose interest in them as a couple, as there’s not even been much tease. Plus, I kinda like Luke and Tracy Q better. I do like both the Luke and Laura characters (particularly Luke), but I’m fine with them not being together.

Although I’ve been a long time fan of GH and Luke and Laura – I agree some things are better left in the past.
Luke and Laura had their love story – it will always be there, but frankly I love Luke with Spanky (Tracy) – I think they rock.
I also think Tony is right – that when Luke leaves ,he should go out in a blaze of glory.

Agree 100%

I see his point. I do find Luke and Laura boring in 2013. But then again, to be honest, I was appauled and disgusted when they made them a super couple after Luke raped laura. I stopped watching GH for abotu 10- years at that time. I thought at the time, “am I the only one who finds this offensive?” However when they came back to GH at the time they were living in Canada and working at a diner or soemthign, I had started watching again shortly before that. I did enjoy when they came back and watched again from shortly before that. I did like it when they had that cute house, etc. I would rather see Luke with Tracey and for Laura to find someone else. I don’t like the character of Scot particularly. Something about him – or maybe it’s just the writing. As far as what should happen should Tony Geary decide to quit,…. I don’t know. But not visiting for births etc. And what a waste of talent they had with some of the greats who visited for 5 seconds . It was nice to see them, but what a waste of talent.I wonder if some who didn’t come were too mad about the way they had been dismissed or weren’t asked?

Michael (not Fairman)

So basically, Luke and Laura aren’t going to be together because Tony Geary thinks it would be boring for him to play it?

I can’t say that I care all that much about Luke and Laura as a couple–but many long-time GH viewers do, and I find his comments surprisingly condescending and arrogant. Many of the viewers whom he’s discussing so dismissively are the very ones who made him a star in the first place, and if he has the kind of clout that gives him a strong voice in what Luke’s story will be, it’s largely because of them and their support. I get that as an actor, he’s tired of it and wishes people would let it go, but I don’t think it would kill him to find a nicer way of saying so.

I also think he’s really missing a key point with his “find interest in tomorrow instead of yesterday” comment: were “tomorrow” on GH (and other soaps) promising to be as compelling as “yesterday,” I don’t think viewers would have such a problem doing that. But it’s been a long time since anybody has written anything on soaps that is anywhere near as gripping as Luke and Laura were for so many people, and you can’t blame viewers for longing for “yesterday” when “tomorrow” has been so underwhelming for so long. (And I say that as someone who has been, on the whole, pretty approving of what the current creative team has done–certainly I find more to praise in their work than many people do; but it’s still not what soaps used to be, even if maybe it’s the best we can hope for in the current environment.)

I totally agree with Tony… Luke and Laura are boring and old….

@Michael (not Fairman): You have written the most concise, accurate and well-thought out statement I have ever seen on this site/bog, or any of the sites/blogs I read about daytime (there’s only three I regularly look at). And I am not just saying that because I agree with everything you wrote!

What Jake said. Thank you Michael (Not Fairrman). It really was a concise and insightful statement and I am so relieved to know I am not the only one who finds Tony’s statements arrogant and patronizing. If one has any doubt that the Fluke story is the equivalent of giving long watching fans the finger, his statement above eradicates it.

John Eric

I agree with jake r and also appreciate your comments, Michael (not Fairman)! Ditto for me on jake r’s reply!! I am also a fan of the current creative team of Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati. I like most of the writing and inclusion and balance of characters and stories. TV is a huge source of nostalgia for many of us, as well as soap operas, with their longevity…my parents (both deceased now) were not divorced. I still want Luke & Laura back together, in a believable and well-written story but I also thing too much damage has been done to the characters. I still believe poor Laura loves Luke but he has shown so little caring or passion towards her for way too long now. Luke has romanced one woman after another, from Felicia Jones Scorpio to Sky Quartermaine to Tracy Q, with several in between. I actually liked Laura and Stefan Cassadine (Steve Nichols) together and isn’t it time for another former Port Charles resident to return from the dead, in between Julian Jerome, Jerry Jax and Dr. Robin Scorpio Drake, lol?!

I’m with Michael (not Fairman) and Jake – perhaps the state of current soaps is due in part to pandering to the stars whims regarding who they do and do not want to share screen time with. Just saying.

touche’ Michael……SPOT ON.

I agree. Luke and Tracy grab my attention.

To be honest, I don’t care. But, I find Tony Geary’s attitude a bit off putting. I remember years ago a friend of mine worked on set with the cast/crew. He had a bad attitude then. Over blown ego, more like it.

Read the entire interview agree with you but as far as I am concerned he is old news and he is definitely not a gentleman towards Genie Francis who was the sole reason for his popularity .I do not care how many emmys he has as far as I am concerned they are a joke anyway. Does anyone really think they are going to kill his character off they have made him a cartoon.

Totally agree with him…I enjoy seeing Luke & Laura as friends and love his chemistry with Jane Elliot…Luke & Tracy make a fun & interesting couple.

While I respect TG I hate the fact he cares
Little what fans that have supported him
though his career feel.I started watching GH
because of Luke and Laura and would love
the writers to find a clever happy ever after
ending for this couple. This is my wish
as someone who became a fan of soaps
because of this couple.,
It seems TG gets his way so I can
Get over my Luke and Laura wish.Does not
mean I have to like it..

I agree….he has little interest in his fanbase wishes.

If Tony is so embittered about the success of Luke Spencer and the monetary gains he has made due to collective fan adulation, I will be happy to take that burdensome money off his hands.

Anthony Geary is one of the best actors on the planet, but sorry, he’s a cranky old man! Look at his complaints about the Riche/Labine-led mid-1990s and how he “complained bitterly to anyone who would listen and took it upon” himself to “rewrite the offending scenes.” No wonder the head writer didn’t like him! What a cancer for the workplace environment! There’s one place you can go if you’re so unhappy: the door! The fact that he didn’t leave shows how happy he really was earning a paycheck, until he could get ABC to bend over backwards and give him that ridiculous “take summers and winters off” contract.
It’d probably be too much to ask for Cartini to read this interview and take some ideas from it – like say a great umbrella story that unites the entire canvas – Robin’s return – and climaxes with Luke’s death, saving her or Anna from Faison.

Please. This man failed when he left GH to try and hit the bigtime. He failed when he came back to GH as a different character (Bill Eckert). At least Genie went onto to do three other soaps, prime time television, two miniseries and three Hallmark movies. What else has TG done besides a guest role on the Partridge family. Even when he came back as Luke they had to get Genie fired from a role she enjoyed on AMC to return as Laura and help prop him up.

TG is an egotistical fool. Who else would have said what he said in that interview – generating tons of hate mail to himself AND ABC Daytime- before going on to negotiate his next contract. He has been a jerk all the way around.

I. Totally. Agree.

Well I’m very disappointed and as a LnL fan I never wanted them to be boring Ward clever stuff. I think they could’ve been interesting. What disturbs me is Mr Geary’s condescending attitude toward fans. I think he purposely squashed any chemistry with Genie because he didn’t want LnL. Also Luke and Tracey have zero romantic chemistry. I do wish they had given fans, real closure and real scenes. It feels like there is,still so much unfinished business with LnL. I shipped LnL till the end but I guess this is the end of the road. Very sad and heartbreaking for this diehard LnL fan. LnL will remain the greatest supercouple ever. Luke will be left in darkness and if Geary thinks, lunacy is gold I feel sorry for him because LnL were magic, eternal soulmates and the one true love of each others lives!

I completely agree with you. Nor do I enjoy the luke and tracy scenes.

Tony speaking sense, and telling it like it is..

quote Tony’
”The viewers you speak of have always wanted Luke and Laura happy and growing old together like Ward and June Cleaver.

—-They’re like a child who never got over his parents’ divorce and lives in perennial hope that mommy and daddy will get back together again. —-

For a variety of reasons, that is not going to happen.
—–The audience needs to let it go and find interest in tomorrow instead of yesterday.”–

……. BRAVO!!

Love ya Tony!!!

jimh(leave it to beaver)
jimh(leave it to beaver)

No matter what people think and myself included about this interview, i like it when the person is open and honest like Geary and not evasive to avoid any backlash…so i agree with suOOOO!!!

But I haven’t heard anyone beg for a Luke and Laura re reunion so it’s not a simple case of fans dwelling on the past. I find Tony’s assumption to be incredibly patronizing.
What most of us want is for some kind of justice to be handed over to Laura–she deserves better.
She left Port Charles to go back to the mental asylum. It seemed to me that Genie was crying real tears and no one, not Scotty, not Luke and not Lulu, seemed to give a damn. You cannot forge ahead with the future until you make peace with the angels and devils of the past.
Laura is that angel–she was Luke’s angel.

I sympathize with Geary’s sentiments but feel he should have said something about his wonderful decades long scene partner, Genie Francis. Francis has been shafter on the show for all the wrong reasons, chiefly sexism. Geary, I’ve always felt, should have spoken out much more in support of a stronger storyline for her character. By dissing Luke and Laura, and opinion he’s entitled to have, he sounds like he’s also dissing Francis, though he may not. From a PR and human sensitivity perspective, Geary should have said this a helluva lot better!

Frankly, I was not of the Luke & Laura generation so I can’t sympathize with a rapist alcoholic character like Luke. Yes, he’s an excellent actor, but I don’t find his portrayal sympathetic. Genie Francis’s Laura, on the other hand, is deeply sympathetic. She’s a great, great actress and should be given far more air time.

Now you see why Gene Francis said Peter Bergman/Jack on Y&R was the nicest co-star she ever had. I can not imagine PB ever being so disrespectful to someone. Over the years every time on camera and off he slammed Laura/Genie. What exactly has he ever done besides GH great actor compared to what? Genie Francis has done nighttime series movies etc. Go Genie!! She has done fine without GH could he say the same? Do I sound mad yes but this is no big shock body chemistry says everything he did not even pretend to act with Genie during the 50th their scenes were flat because of him not her.

tony geary just lost my respect! TPTB should not be party to these sentiments — and should hire actors based on talent, dedication to their scenes and scene-partners, and maybe even how well they get along with an ensemble cast.

Right Kay! (and it’s good to see you again).

Michael (not Fairman) you said it perfectly. Tony Geary may not want to play the 65-year-old man making goo-goo eyes, but I would prefer that to a 65-year-old graying, sick man lying in a hospital bed.. That’s the exciting drama we are getting now. Just bring back Laura, without Luke.

Ditto Michael (not Fairman) on all counts. I too was taken aback at Geary’s condescending remarks and agree that had it not been for the fans, he would not be where he is today, including a sweet contract that allows for him to live in Holland for part of the year and still have a job to come back to in the States. As I recall, when Genie Francis had asked for a similar provision way back when, GH shot it down.
Yes, I do prefer Luke with Tracy, however, it’s always good to see the characters of Laura and Scotty back in PC. Perhaps it’s just nostalgic and takes me back to the 6th grade, running home from school so as not to miss any of the then 30 minute episodes.

She didn’t ask for a similar provision in her contract. She asked for the summer off because her husband had the opportunity to do a project in London over the summer. She thought that, since her screen husband would be gone all summer she might have the same deal JUST FOR THE SUMMER. JFP said no.

I do not agree with Tony at all about Luke and Laura. He would be nothing without Luke and Laura. It shouldn’t be about what he wants. It’s about the fans and it’s about what everyone wants to believe in…love. That true love lasts forever. Luke and Laura are the reason that soaps are still on the air. Tony just wants juicy storylines and he doesn’t care about assassinating his character or others. He was all for having Luke cheat on Laura because he wanted Ethan to be Luke’s son. Even Genie Francis and Jonathan Jackson had strong feelings about that storyline. They both said it was changing history, that at that particular time, Luke and Laura were happy and in love. Tony also made Luke appear to not want children and be a dead beat dad. I watched when Laura told Luke that she was pregnant with Lucky and he was ecstatic. He was also happy when Laura was pregnant with Lulu. He wanted Luke to run over Jake because it gave him great material. The great soap writer Douglas Marland once said that if viewers say that a character would never do or say something that was written, then the writer is not doing his job. They could write exciting storylines for Luke and Laura but Tony doesn’t want that and Tony gets whatever he wants. I have lost a lot of respect for him. And because he doesn’t want Luke and Laura, they are writing Laura to be weak. Laura was never weak until tptb were mad because Genie wanted time off to be with her husband while he was directing a movie so they wrote her off and made her crazy. If they are not going to put Luke and Laura back together, please make Laura’s character strong and independent. It was a joke this week when Tracey showed up with a gun to help Luke. Laura should have been there. Laura has helped Luke and was his equal during all of the storylines. I love the show right now but the one thing I don’t like is how they are ruining Laura’s character all because of Tony. In the past when Tony was on the show, the ratings weren’t good. When did they go up? Every time they brought Genie back and used her for ratings for sweeps. And then viewers think she was the one who didn’t want to stay long term when she did. Sorry for the rant but I have been watching GH for 36 years and I am so disappointed with Tony not appreciating the fans, especially when he wouldn’t have a career if not for them.

Quote Tony’
”The viewers have always wanted Luke and Laura happy and growing old together like Ward and June Cleaver.
”—-They’re like a child who never got over his parents’ divorce and lives in perennial hope that mommy and daddy will get back together again. —-
For a variety of reasons, that is not going to happen.
—–The audience needs to let it go and find interest in tomorrow instead of yesterday.”–

There’s nothing wrong with a couple growing old together. That’s what most couples do. Do they have to be Ward and June Cleaver?? What is Geary thinking? If LnL had been written as an even partly realistic older Luke and Laura with all the complexities of growing and maturing adults it would have been a great ride. But Geary wants James Bond, play dress-up and talk in funny accents. Or he wants Luke to be a sadistical unreliable bastard. Geary doesn’t want interesting subtle human drama – it’s a blow to his ego not to be overwhelming.

No. I don’t get it at all. Tony is a senior citizen. He looks ridiculous running aroundsecret isla ds and playing super who hero. He had a writer in Claire Labinevwho wrote him some of the beat material of his life. It would be real cool if Luke could run to amsterdam every other week…to engage in otherwise illegal acrivities…but that’s not how it works.

I just read the entire Anthony Geary interview in “TV Guide” and have to say, the above quotes are taken somewhat out of context. Tony says at the very end of the interview that:
“It’s been a big struggle to hold onto the Luke Spencer that was originally created for me by Gloria Monty and Douglas Marland. If a writer wants to honor Luke and Laura as they were originally conceived and move them forward to true grown-up status with problems and a pitch-dark past, and keep them conflicted and in turmoil, I’ll be happy to play it. But fans wanting Luke and Laura together just to have them together has never been of any use to me.”

I completely understand Mr.Geary’s point of view and agree with him; the Luke, Laura, Lucky, Baby LuLu and Foster the Dog Spencer family from the mid-90’s was definitely boring!

That being said, he should have shown us fans SOME respect in regards to us “living in the past”; he definitely could have been more diplomatic and sympathetic in his phrasing.

Interesting! Thanks for posting!

Michael (not Fairman)
I take his point–and nobody has more respect for Douglas Marland than I have (Gloria Monty, well . . .)–but I don’t think you can just ignore things that have happened to the character in the 35 years since Gloria fired Doug, either. That isn’t how soaps work. Geary has made the point before that he was very uncomfortable with the way Luke was turned into a hero in the 1980s, and sort of whitewashed, because of Luke and Laura’s immense popularity. I am totally with him on that. But all of that other stuff with Luke, it did happen–it was written, it was played, viewers watched it (in huge numbers), it’s a part of GH history, and though it’s not a part of GH history I’m particularly attached to, it does mean a great deal to a great many people. Even the stuff in the 1990s under Labine and Riche that he apparently hated so much–it happened, we saw it, it’s a part of Luke’s history and who Luke is, whether he likes it or not. So though I think in principle I’d like to agree with him about who Luke really was meant to be, that isn’t the entire story of Luke, just because of the way things played out, and I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect viewers to forget years of story and character that many are very, very attached to, just because he prefers the original conception of the character. (I know he thought Guza was a terrific writer and that Guza’s material for Luke was great; does he really think the original Marland conception was THAT dark, THAT twisted, THAT lacking in redeeming qualities? Because I’d have to disagree with him on that, too. If Labine/Riche’s version neglected Luke’s rough edges, Guza’s version shorted Luke’s redeeming qualities; why does that not also bother him?) He was there, I wasn’t, so I guess I’ll take him at his word that Luke retained that dark edge throughout the Monty years. I wasn’t an avid viewer (because I found the idea of a woman falling in love with a man who had raped her pretty ghastly, and I am also one of the few who hated, hated, hated the sci-fi stuff) but from what I did watch, I remember quite a transformation of Luke into someone much less dark than he had been originally written, originally by Marland and then for a little while by Pat Falken Smith, until the character became so popular. He played all of Luke’s scenes while I was only a sometime watcher, so I’ll give due credit to his perception that Luke maintained that dark underside, but I didn’t see much of it when I did tune in, I have to say. I suspect there’s some truth to what he’s saying about Riche and Labine’s take on the character, but I also think we’re getting the story only through his eyes, and there are probably other aspects of the “truth” (if there… Read more »

Wow, Michael (Not Fairman) I read every word you wrote with interest. You make some astoundingly good points.
I too, found Luke and Laura more interesting as they matured, became more domesticated and dealt with real life issues that the common person deals with. You could see Luke struggle with domesticity and you could see Laura recognize that struggle. Laura didn’t tell you she was in pain but showed you. She is a good and somewhat underrated actress. One of the most powerful scenes which transpired between Luke and Laura was after their divorce. In tears, they made love at night in the backyard of their house. It was a scene replete with love, regret, heartbreak, broken dreams and sadness and something we don’t see anymore. You can probably find it on Youtube. It almost tears me up just talking about it. I guess Tony Geary is the one who just doesn’t get it, not the fans.

The “old Luke” written by Gloria Monty is alive and well for anyone’s viewing on youtube. The current Luke is not remotely the same person. TG can spew all the fantasy he wants about who Luke is – he isn’t the person Tony has created while he was “stretching” his acting while the audience completely lost interest and respect. He needs to go. Bring back Genie and Stephen Nichols.

I just want to say that I love your comments too, Elizabeth. Yes, I too would love to see Stephen Cassadine back instead of that creepy mouth breathing older brother of his.

I also have to say that I am enjoying all the storylines except for Luke being poisoned. I find his acting lately over the top and I find his scenes boring. I do like Tracy but she is such a strong character and they are making her look like a fool pining after Luke. No one should accept someone who steals, cheats and leaves her. In real life, Luke should be alone with the way he treats everyone in his life, especially Tracy. And as much as Tony doesn’t want Luke and Laura to reunite, their chemistry is still amazing. Tony has a spark in his eyes when he looks at Genie and that is what great chemistry is. And don’t even get me started on Luke comparing Laura to an old sweatshirt. What a disgrace. And that Laura tied him down and wanted him to be something he wasn’t. If you watch the old episodes, Luke was completely in love with Laura and wanted to be a better person because of her. Who in their right mind would want to wallow in their dysfunction and not grow and become a better person. His character is not one that has grown but rather has regressed over the years. And I agree with Michael (not Fairman), he is very condescending to his fans and should learn more tact when conducting an interview. He seems annoyed with the fans when he should be thanking us for his fame, money and his home in Amsterdam with his ridiculously long vacations. I don’t even miss Luke when he is gone and that is a shame. I never thought I would ever say this, but I wish that Tony would leave the show. Let Genie stay. She is the better actor anyway.

If Tony ever decides to leave General Hospital I hope he has a lot of input on the story. This is a man who majored in Theater in college on a Presidential Scholarship. He knows good story. He’s an excellent writer. I hope he stays on the show for years more.
I agree with him on Luke and Laura not being a couple. That’s over. They will be connected forever through the children they have. I love watching them in scenes together. They still have great chemistry. It doesn’t have to be romantic chemistry. Luke and Robert have great chemistry. I would love to see them work together in stories.
As for Luke having a romance, I like him with Tracy. They are a good fit. Their chemistry is fantastic.
Luke is 66 years old. As a 63 year old woman I can attest to the fact that at this age you do not adventure as you did as a 30 year old.
I love Tony a lot and have a great deal of respect for him. When he feels it is time to leave the show I will respect his decision. Will I miss him? Oh hell yeah!!!
Tony, whenever you leave, you go enjoy the hell out of Amsterdam and everywhere life takes you. But, never forget there’s a lot of people loving you.

I think Tony Geary is spot on, as having received the most daytime emmys ever any actor he better go out with a blaze of glory, but I am not ready for him to do so—becuase Luke and Laura deserve so much more. I like seeing each of them with different pairings, but as Laura once said to Tracy, Luke will always love Laura, and viewers like me know this will always be true. The one thing I want to see more of is Genis Francis. Genie was 14 when she was in the spotlight, she gave actually OSCAR calibre performances throughout General Hospital and had dialogue that was tough. To have both of these actors around is a gift. Its refreshing to see Genie back , and having her not be weak. iot just hope they give her more to do!!

No. I don’t get it at all. Tony is a senior citizen. He looks ridiculous running around secret islands and playing super who hero. He had a writer in Claire Labine who wrote him some of the beat material of his life. It would be real cool if Luke could run to amsterdam every other week…to engage in otherwise illegal acrivities…but that’s not how it works.

Tony completely contradicts himself. He says that viewers need to accept change and move on and move forward. Yet he wants Luke to remain dark, hostile, angry, and miserable. I don’t believe a word of his stories about Wendy and Claire saying “Do we have to do Luke and laura again?”. Claire and Wendy cleearly loved their work and that was reflected on screen. The way they wrote Luke and Laura’s return was thrilling! There was no attempt to deconstruct Luke and Laura. There was an attempt made to keep them happy and interesting which they were.

I find it so funny….I have never heard a soap fan say that happy couples are boring. The only people I have heard say that are producers, writers, and network executives. For all the “never been done before” stories soaps have tried (cloning, male rape, devilpossession etc) soaps should try a radical new idea….keeping a couple happy, interesting, and together. It can be done. That is one of the reasons why soaps are gone. No one wants to watch constant misery and angst. I am not saying that couples have to sit around talking about how happy they are….there is enough dama in life where couples can bicker or figt and still be in love

His interview was really interesting. I really appreciate that he wasn’t just saying what he thought his fans wanted to hear, but was just honest about his own personal opinions and preferences are on the creative side.

I was too young to know of or remember the first run of Luke and Laura. I have seen clips on YouTube and I do understand the magnitude of the chemistry the actors shared in the late 70s and early 80’s. “My” supercouple was Sonny and Brenda. I agree with and understand what Tony said about trying to relive the past into the future. This time around, I don’t see the chemistry between Tony and Genie. Honestly, I love Luke with Tracy. Their off-screen friendship shines through their on-screen relationship. I also love Scotty Baldwin and I like him with Laura. I also think it would be more poignant to have Luke die, as Stephanie did on B&B., as Tony said in his interview.

Sorry to all the LandL lovers, but Geary is ten times the actor Francis is hence all the deserved Emmy wins!! IMO LandL don’t work anymore and Luke has great chemistry with Tracy Q! Geary would’ve gotten very far even without Francis. It just happens that for a brief time they were magical, but that time has passed.

Yep. That must be why he failed at every other acting effort he made. Failed at Bill Eckert. Failed at movies. Insisted that he couldn’t play Luke again without Genie.

Maybe he is talented. But not that talented. and a complete jerk as a person.

But Elizabeth, as Jeff says, Genie “don’t work anymore.” But she do! Er, I mean , she does! She was just on a Hallmark special and is keeping busy.

I respect Geary and his acting talent, but I found his dissing of Claire Labine to be completely gratuitous. GH was dying before she took over as headwriter. She brought a depth and class to the show that was unprecedented. The BJ/Maxie heart transplant, Monica’s breast cancer, Robin’s HIV, etc., all brilliant soap opera. TG has a very selective (and self-centered) memory.

unlike the majority, I never got into the Luke & Laura pairing… so I’m glad to hear him say for fans to get over it and move on… I’ve been waiting on the other side for sooooo long. te he he

I believe that the time for Luke & Laura has passed. They were a popular soap couple. I was, however, always bothered by their “love” story coming from the fact that Luke RAPED Laura. I felt it set a lousy precedent that other soaps have since followed (Sami & EJ, for example).

However, given all the past writing for them I can see that they might have a respect and genuine caring for each other. But, they are different people from 30 years ago. I think it is a shame that they can only see pairing Laura up with a man from her past, be it Luke or Scotty. Neither is exactly a gem. If they wanted to write a decent story with a love interest for Laura they need to introduce a new character that can accept her for the person she is today, not some version of Laura as a teen.

yah! they could create a love interest for Laura – a man she met and was with in Paris, a handsome big roller ..
That is the best way to go and would give her good stories, and a new start..

Too bad Geary’s talent isn’t anywhere as big as his ego.
The guy has had it made for the past 40 years, and for the past 15 has decided he has the right to dictate writing and story direction. And too bad for us, they’ve let him get away with far too much.
Neither Luke Spencer or Tony Geary are the end-all and be-all he apparently thinks.

Recast the character with someone who can act – and someone who actually wants to.

everyone knows that happy couple is the kiss of death on soaps, but still , i don’t undertstand why Genie can’t be on GH and be a great stand alone character like Luke. i know soap fans want romance,( well not all, but for the most part,) i personally don’t mind if they never get back together but i still want Laura on the show, she’s a great character, and the possibility of storyline for both charcters together or alone are endless and possible. I just really hate how wronged Genie/Laura have been. Bring back Genie/Laura, let her have her own storyline. Pleaasssseee!

I loved the Luke and Laura days of old!!! A part of me would have liked to see them back together again with a great story… but too much time and too much change in who they are has occurred. More so on Luke’s side… because Laura was robbed of that time and experience to change. She wanted to go back and resolve her feelings. Nothing against Kin but Scotty is not for Laura!!! Since Luke is not… I am hoping the rumors of SN coming back as Stephan could have him coming back for Laura and have RC weave some incredible story to let both Genie and Steven show teir talent and chemistry! I adore Genie and she has been cheated out of the chance to play the Laura she should be allowed to become!!! Let’s hope she is given the chance to take Laura to the next level like Tony was given…and if Luke is left looking on with a glimmer of what he lost… then that would be good story and coming back to their original roots!

As for Tony’s interview… he does speak some truth and yet it does come across with some disregard for the incredibly involved, consistent and loyal GH fans. Tony is a very talented actor… no more than Genie though. He has just had incredible opportunities and gifts of great stories to showcase that talent! I do love Luke and Tracy and I know Tony and Jane are truly partners and great actors!!! I would not mind seeing them end up together with Tracy always being a bit jealous of Laura… and as I hope Laura will grow and evolve… Luke will be a bit jealous of… hopefully Stephan and will see what he may have missed out on. Christmas’s and Thanksgiving could be very interesting down the pike with the Quartermaines, Spencers and Cassadines together with their families!!!

Must say Michael (not Fairman)… you are very eloquent and I agree with much of what you said and you stirred up some very good discussion… well said!

Not that I wish for a reunion with Luke and Laura, I actually prefer him with Tracy….they are amusing and entertaining. I just have a problem with the way he ignores his fans.. and how very clear it is he has no love or interest in Genie Franis…There is definitely something not right with their off scene relationship..

It’s interesting to me that much of the responses here have been anti-Geary…and that he doesn’t seem “grateful” enough to his fans and/or that he was insulting/condescending.

If you read the entire interiew in TV guide at one point he answers:

‘I appreciate beyond words that people still want to see me as this character.” He THEN goes on to say that he’s not interested in playing a bored, everyday man sitting at home with the little missus as they grow old together. I’m paraphrasing. He did not say that in those words. But I get what he’s saying…his character started out as a rogue…an exciting, compelling action-packed anti-hero. He was then made into the loving, doting husband and if the storylines continued that way he, as an actor…was not/is not interested. And that’s okay. If he has to play that role…he should at least enjoy it.

He did NOT say say he wouldn’t want Luke and Laura back together under ANY circumstance. He said if they could make them more interesting, more dynamic…with conflict and passion and action and circumstances…again…not his exact words…he’d be more than happy to visit that relationship again.

I don’t think he meant to insult fans with the comment about kids wanting their parents to get back together after a divorce…and I do get his analogy.

Finally, I really don’t think he be too upset if he was written off. He said he’s had a great run…and he seems to really enjoy his life in Amsterday. He bikes and take boat rides and writes and goes to galleries and art openings…visits good friends in Paris and Brussels. He said it’s “idyllic.”

So I think, for those of us who like the familiarity of “Luke”…we should cherish the character while we have him. The tapestry in Port Charles…as in real life…is ever changing….

I take Tony at his word in the concluding sentences of the interview and would love to see Luke and Laura as grownups with conflict and drama.
And, if he has so much influence, why couldn’t he suggest that to the writers?
On the other hand, why should the writers need a suggestion–why DON’T they write a dynamic story?
On the other hand, Tony, please DO NOT presume to speak for the viewers and shortchange them. For the sake of argument, what is wrong with people remaining in love with dynamic, passionate sexual attraction.? (Feeding strawberries to one another might be fun!) BUT the power is always in the WRITING. Almost any scene can be powerful if there is good writing/acting.
Methinks Tony doth protest too much. I find that often an actor is just too close to the situation and cannot see the forest for the trees.
Question to Tony: He says he doesn’t want the story of Luke and Laura to be polluted–does he, then, not care if the character of his friend Jane Eliot, Tracy by name, has been completed violated? Tracy could not stand to look at Luke–and Luke despised her, but now THEY are acting like teeny boppers talking such hogwash and silly lines like “You are my Bonnie and I am your Clyde.” Gag me with a strawberry!
See what I mean by not seeing the forest for the trees?????
As for the character of Luke being violated (certainly Tony has NOT been true to him regardless of what he says), I guess Tony prefers that Luke be a drunk, a murderer, a philanderer, an absent, disinterested father to the rakish character with a clear vision of what he wanted and believed in and aspired to. And, alas, he has forgotten perhaps the most enduring traits of Luke: his sense of humor and his loyalty.
Yes, I have read all the interviews and I have also watched the interviews that he and Genie sat for, separate and together, for the Academy of Arts and Sciences (television) and what he says there about preserving the intergrity of the Luke and Laura story does NOT jive with what he says elsewhere.
The truth: Tony and Genie (with a boatload of help from Gloria Monty and THE WRITERS created indelible characters. We viewers of 40 years cannot forget them and don’t want to. We’ve kept up our end of the deal; Tony has not.
Note to Tony: People that are “OLDER” do not forget how to love, feel passion, and have dreams. And viewers, unlike the actor apparently, do NOT have short memories (even if we are “mature.”

Im 35 and have watched gh and followed luke and laura and totally remember being intially excited by their return in 1993 BUT WAS SOON LET DOWN by the boring writing of claire labine(whom i still credit with destroying the action adventure storylines) i didnt find interest in Luke and Lsura until 1996 with the return of the cassadines storyline(cant miss television at the time) I agree that the couple shoud be played as grown up star crossed lovers who have seen enough as to where they are no longer blinded by their obsession with each other. Luke and Laura should always be involved in action adventure storylines even if their age dictates they be supporting players. Pass the torch to the children why isnt lucky a wsb agent why cant lulu as nd dante hve an rxciting adventure?

Allen Saint James

I also think luke’s anti hero qualities should be reconstructed . For decades now tony plays and writers portray luke as a total ass and i get thst is who he might be at the core and i know Laura was the light to his dark so in turn she willed him to being a better person, but look would and should still have a penchant for saving the day. The affect that laura’S Absence had on him is never discussed or portrayed. I will always root for luke and laura to be together but that diesnt mean i want them to be 21 again

nancy dillingham

Amen. Allen saint James!

I read a lot of the posts, and agree with a lot that has been said. However, Luke/Anthony is only a recurring member of the cast now, which is how he wants it. He wants to do other projects. I think he is wrong about Luke and Laura. First of all, why should they be all hearts and roses to be together. I like Tracy, but agree Luke would not have had the following withouut Laura. I am more concerned that the character of nincompoop Balwin was brought back and Laura had to explain every little thing (ok, some of it was big), because of his insecuity. I have to admit I do not like the actors work. I saw him on ATWT some time back and he was the same sort of character. That said, why, oh why can Laura have a guy, and stay on the show. Age does not mean people don’t have relationships. Also, why can’t LuLu and Nick have their mother in town. They put her in a mental institution for so long it was ridiculous. Lucky is not a memory, instead of even a recurring character. I don’t like any of that. Love Jonathan, and understand he is doing other things, but I have to think he would come back for a visit at the very least.

nancy dillingham

Hey there, Michael Fairman,
When are you going to do another interview with Genie Francis now that she has a new contract. (And apparently TPTB are going to do a “redo” of Laura’s return since the consensus in that they “botched” the first one.)
And I think all of Genie’s longtime fans would like to hear from Genie and have her comment on Tony Geary’s interview. Hey, why do you suppose TV Guide didn’t do a joint interview or at least invite Genie to sit for an interview with them? I, for one, would love to read that!
PS I know Genie is more circumspect than Tony as far as interviews go, but I’ll bet she’d speak to you again if you asked her.

I disagree with many who have expressed there thoughts here, respectfully.
I understand that some like Tracy and Luke together. But, they just don’t gel. You do not see the same chemistry that you do with Luke and Laura.
I do however, respect Anthony Geary’s thoughts on Luke he should have more of an ‘edge” to him. He should be given the chance to be “dark” and work with the writers to develop that. I think Luke and Laura do need to another story, marriage changes people, people age and move in their lives like many of us and we don’t throw away a relationship because they have grown and changed. Most work to make a marriage or relationship work. Anthony Geary stated that Luke and Laura are soul mates which I think is true, I think Tracy and Luke are great played as friends, comrades in arms, that sort of thing. But, the love of his life is most likely Laura. It would be great if the writers would work with Anthony Geary to develop Luke the way he sees the character and then, incorporate Laura with her own dark side and create some conflict and tension that could lead to them reuniting.
Just a thought.

I watched GH at the start of the best in two amazing actors Tony and Genie and I have seen alot of old interviews with them and it showed how much they really cared for each other as actors and friends. They should just give them more up dated story lines for 2013. The idea of seeing Luke and and Tracy together makes no sense but I am just a fan. If that the way the story is going to go then I will not be watching GH anymore.

I see where he is coming from. But if he wants his end to be killed off then let it be with Laura by his side. I think that would really satisfy so many including me and also make for a fantastic story. The two star crossed lovers who started out in a dangerous love story to end in the same way. Perfect circle completed.

I can understand Tony’s desire to expand his acting horizons to reflect more complexity & depth in his portrayal of Luke Spenser. I imagine all actors/actresses wouldn’t want to type casted as being one dimensional. That being said, Tony didn’t “hit it big” in other avenues of creative expression when he left GH to pursue his ambitions. He returned to soap operas, the type of acting that gained him enormous success. He should @ least have some regard for his fans & what they like. It’s not as if he & Genie Francis couldn’t do a dramatic story wihout the “goo-goo” eyes. The fact that they are soap opera’s “golden couple”of all time,is a given. They could do stories that play up each of their strengths. By all means, conflict could be put into the equation to keep things “moving” & interesting. To blatantly disregard the dedicated fans ,who support him & have catapulted him into stardom , is rather selfish. I LOVE Tony Geary & appreciate that he is an exceptional actor but I also LOVE Genie Francis who is an accomplished actress in her own right. Together, they are magical & bring excitement & diversity to GH. To say that we fans, who love L&L, are like children who can’t get over their parents divorce or separation is a belittling & demeaning statement. If & when he decides to retire or leave GH then by all means give him his wish for Luke to die, because there will never be another actor to do justice to that role other than Tony Geary. It would be even better if he & Laura were to die together. That would certainly end the L&L era & it would give the fans bittersweet closure to the story of our beloved Luke & Laura. If he didn’t like these options, then let Luke die & Laura could continue to live in PC with her children & grandchildren & enjoy a variety of storylines that a seasoned actress like Genie Francis could effectively perform. Tony has a right to want more or something different to challenge his skills but does he have the right to limit what the fans want or even Genie’s options?

Well yeah, because imagining a 65 year old man spanking buns of another old person is much more appealing and believable than making goo goo eyes at Laura. *sarcasm*

GH Nurses’ Ball 2018 Conclusion: Anna Learns Henrik Is Her Son, Maxie Has Her Son, Ava Wows, Mike & Sonny Duet!

In the most moving and exciting episode of this 2018 GH Nurses’ Ball, all roads lead to the truth about Henrik and how he is really living his life as none other than Peter August (Wes Ramsey).  First, Robert (Tristan Rogers) who has punched out by Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) on stage drags him outside of the ballroom for his part in the cover[up.  Robert is worried about Anna’s (Finola Hughes) safety. Nina (Michelle Stafford) confronts her husband about how long he’s known who Henrik is.  She later figures out why he has been trying to whisk her and Charlotte out of the country.

Onstage Mike (Max Gail) takes a mic, and makes a moment of saying he has Alzheimer’s and then launches into the song he remembers,“The Summer Wind.” As he sings, he imagines being accompanied by a big band as he proceeds to deliver a showstopper.  Suddenly, in reality, Mike is lost and disoriented … scared he stares around at the audience.  Sonny (Maurice Benard) gets up to the stage to help his dad by cluing him into the lyrics.  Sonny sings with Mike and gets him through the song.  They receive a standing ovation.

Ava (Maura West) who is preparing to perform her number comes across a moment between Kiki (Hayley Erin) and Griffin (Matt Cohen) backstage where they are in a hug.  Little does Ms. Jerome know that Griffin was consoling Kiki after her lewd run-in with Dr. Bensch (James DePaiva).   Then it is Maura West, who truly brings down the house for this year’s ball with her Ava’s rendition of “You Don’t Own Me.”  That tune was certainly a nod to all those that Ava feels have wronged her.  Yup! Sonny, Griffin and Kiki we think are some on her list!   Dressed in a white pant suit and accompanied by a bevy of male dancers, West knocked the interpretation of the song out of the park, to make it work for her character and the Nurses’ Ball.

Elsewhere, Maxie (Kristen Storms) has gone into labor, and Peter is right there safely delivering her baby boy. Maxie is taken by paramedics to the hospital, while Peter calls Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) at Maxie’s urging to let him know what happened.  Spinelli has just found out, through Sam (Kelly Monaco) and Jason (Steve Burton) that Peter is Henrick!

Anna is walking into a trap on the pier as she waits for Henrick. When he appears, he has no idea that Anna is his mother, and thinks it’s all been a set-up.  He points a gun to eliminate her once and for all, but Anna says she has something to tell him.

The Nurses’ Ball concludes with a touching finale of “Champion” featuring: Epiphany (Sonya Eddy), Felix (Marc Anthony Samuel), Bobbie (Jackie Zeman), Amy (Risa Dorken) and the other nurses.

So, what did you think of the final episode of the GH Nurses’ Ball 2018?  What did you think of the musical performances? Do you think Maxie’s baby will be OK? Will Anna be able to tell Henrik that she is his mom? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.
