Good Afternoon America Continues Lackluster Performance After Three Days of Ratings!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

Well, here we go again, soapers!  The ABC Daytime summer replacement series, Good Afternoon America is already on a downward spiral in just three days of air shows!

In the new numbers and data from TV Media Insights after Wednesday’s performance, “Based on the third day of weighted metered market (overnight) results from Nielsen, Good Afternoon America, hosted by Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott, dipped to a 1.5 rating/4 share in households.”

TV Media Insight went on to say, “Comparably, that is down by 12 percent in just two days (1.7/ 5 – 1.6/ 5 – 1.5/ 4), with erosion out of the lead-in average on Wednesday (1.9/ 6) of 21 percent. One year earlier, former occupant One Life to Live was averaging a 2.0/ 6. ”

In addition, the key female demos are not showing up to watch GAA either! The 18-49 share was 0.3 and the women 24-54  share was slightly higher at 0.6!   And while this news of GAA’s less than stellar first week continues to pour in from reviews and ratings, let is also be known that the less week of The Revolution scored a miserable 1.23 million viewers which was down an resounding 53 percent from One Life to Live a year earlier!

Once again this all continues to prove that wiping Llanview off the map was a badly miscalculated move by network execs!  Weigh-in!

ABC Daytime viewers want their soaps in the afternoon, that should be painfully obvious to ABC/Disney by now.

This is from my article …the link is below.

“Every successful business knows that the customer is always right.
To ABC/Disney, give your customers what they want to see….. and stop trying to tell them what they are going to watch.”

http://www.examiner.com/article/can-you-hear-us-yet?cid=db_articles

Great quote and how true. Thanks.

right on:>)

Hey- awesome article. Perhaps we should all forward it to the idiots at ABC. Wouldn’t it be remarkable if some idiot at the head of the dreaded Disney network actually realized that if they resurrected One Life and All My Children- even combined the two shows and characters as a one hour soap (hence, saving some money), they would generate an enormous amount of free publicity? Nay, the Disney idiot suits are too busy scheduling reality shows that NO ONE wants to watch.

absolutely right, these idiots are very busy producing shit and do not have time to do something good, like to restore our beloved soaps

Well done, soaps fans! Cancel this garbage, just like we did The Revolution!

Amen.

Isn’t it simple – BRING BACK OLTL!!

Agree

Agreed! This is crap bring back my show already!!

It’s the ONLY answer! Don’t they understand it’s they only thing we will watch at that time! NO replacements!

I am Loving the bad ratings of GAA!!! As a OLTL fan I am Glad to see that the ratings of the replacement shows are worse than OLTL’s ratings! I will NOT EVER watch ANY afternoon show on ABC Except GH! And I hope ALL Soap Fans do the same!!!
SAVE GH!!!

Good Afternoon America Off To A Sluggish St
day 2, day 3…. ha! YEAH! soap fans rule!

Hopefully it stays sluggish, I like that we are getting updates daily Tv media insights is good at keeping up with the daytime ratings I go there a couple of times a day. And it is always looking good for us soap fans.

HERE, HERE! Well said Debbie! I totally agree with you. I will only watch GH in the afternoon. I do have a concern with them being moved to 2pm eastern. What time will it air in the Pacific and Mountain time zones and will it be up against Y&R? God, I hope not!

Thanks for the info.

I cannot say I am sorry because I could care less about talk and reality shows.
I would rather watch a good Soap any day.

Perhaps replace the co-host with actors from OLTL. That will bring the audience.

This is good news, but not surprising. This is another stupid show only difference is there are only 2 hosts, but it’s the same recycled garbage, I hate having to repeat myself all the time about this subject. Abc why don’t you admit you were wrong and bring back one life to live. How much money have you wasted on this nonsense? Bring back Vicki and her family, trust me you will bring those ratings up and have quality, unique, Classic, programming.

Agreed Barb!

Soaps are watched by more people than the ratings ever showed. Viewers will not be back to watch another daytime talk show. OLTL and AMC did much better than ABC executives wanted us think. We all know the truth without their lies.

I couldn’t be happier. This is the best news. The only time ABC is on my TV during the day is to watch GH. If they checked their DVR ratings for people that have Soapnet I bet it would be really high as I can bet that OLTL fans are dvr-ing the episodes that air on Soapnet every night between 5:00 am-8:00 am cst.

Simply put…..no one wants to watch GAA!!! And being that ABC is refusing to recognize the major issue of the programming mistake that they have made, by canceling OLTL, they will continue to have problems with whatever program they put in that time slot. And the longer they wait, the less likely it will be for them to regroup the cast, which has no-doubtedly moved on….which would then leave them with the problem of trying to recreate the magic that they destroyed by canceling the show in the first place.

The biggest problem that ABC is not realizing is….by canceling AMC & OLTL, they have not only scorned their viewing audience, but they have left a huge hole in their programming schedule, that they are now seeing is damn near impossible to replace. This will, without a doubt effect their overall daytime performance on the ABC network…dragging them further and further into a ratings oblivion. ABC needs to do something major and drastic, to pull themselves out of this darkness….A major move, like the one when they cancelled AMC & OLTL is the only thing that will draw major attention to the network, and will show the fans that they can admit that they were wrong. Bite the bullet and bring back a soap.

Now, I’m not even necessarily saying bring back OLTL, although that is my ultimate dream. But like I stated before, so many of the characters connected to the show have moved on to something else. So, here’s a wild idea. Why not put a soap on and call it LLanview, PA.? This way they could draw back as many actors that are willing to come back and give it a shot….cause lets face it, I’m sure a lot of them don’t trust the network anymore….but the ones that want to come back and give it a shot, why not? And by changing up the name a bit, but still focusing on the people of LLanview, it would be something that the fans would be drawn to, but with a little twist….maybe even integrate some of the characters from Pine Valley. I know a lot of people will find fault with this idea, because we all just want our OLTL back….but with so much time going by, it will be quite difficult to pick up where OLTL left off. This would be a compromise that I think the fans would be willing to work with.

I think your plot outline sounds very plausible, and yes, I would be very happy to watch it.

brian, I had to go all over the place looking for you, I would hate to loose Olivia, But I would love for them to keep Heather, shes to much fun to let go, That woman is never boring and Ron does write a lot of good stuff for her, I don’t want to see them put her at a place where she has to go back to Shady brook or prison, Wasn’t she funny when she ask the guard for a tube of lipstick? I couldn’t stop laughing.

hey barbara

yes, the humour that sometimes was the essence of OLTL is showingf up on GH !many thanks to ron and frank.

I like your idea, I’d watch it.

Good Idea Torrey, I would watch it to, And that would give all the soap stars from one life to live a chance to come back if they choose to. But, Like you said and I am sure it is a fact they do not trust abc and wouldn’t want to come back to that network. I wish that abc would just give up the rights to One life to live before it is to late to put our soap some place else where it would be respected, something abc has proven over and over again that they don’t, they took a soap off that was loved by millions of fans and discarded it like trash and in the same breath say that the fans can be trained to watch what ever bull they put on in it’s place, That didn’t work out and abc knows how we feel and they are continuing to keep there new crap programs on and insult us even more. I want One life to live back or call it Landview p.a, It’s been 6 months since we have seen our soap and I still miss it terribly, It was such a very special part of my life, It still is.

Torrey, Great idea! I’m hoping that this is what GH is thinking when it says Llanview will become more prominent in the Fall on GH! Many of the actors have moved on with 3 of the most popular on GH. GH killed off Hope & Cole and spoilers say they are about to do this to Natalie & Liam which is all BS! Nora & Jessica have different gigs and I believe Bo & Vicki live on the East coast, so I’m hoping they DON’T kill Natalie & Liam and bring other characters in to GH in the Fall. After all OLTL writing team and producer are now @ GH. If Natalie is brought on then they would have reason to bring in all of her family members at different times whenever storyline permits and OLTL could possibly live on!

Changing GH from an hour to 2 hrs would be fine with me!

I agree Torrey. Terrific idea! I want to know why ABC is not letting the emmy winning GH stay in it’s traditional time slot that it has been in for the last 49 years and putting Miss Katie in the 2pm slot. Gee, is it because Katie doesn’t want to feel the wrath of us soapers? Too bad. It’s going to happen anyway. I will be sure to change the channel before 4pm or just turn off the tv entirely after GH airs for the day.

can’t wait for Katie Spew to fail too.

Word.

As much as I enjoy Josh and Lara in the AM, I am not giving their afternoon turn a chance. The show seems silly and unnecessary. I do miss the soaps and wonder if the web will learn any lessons. Their primetime baby last season was REVENGE, a serialized drama!

Maybe a renaissance can be expected, at tleast in half-hour form, although they stuff so many commercials, it would be liek the old 15-minute serials of old!

Soon ABC won’t be able to pay anyone to try a show during this timeslot…. simply because any replacement cast will know what ABC refuses to believe…. it’s DOOMED !

It’s doomed alright. And the fans will continue to make sure it stays that way, We want One life to live back.

Soap fans Rock and by boycotting maybe they’ll be heard!

ABC wake up are return the show you should have never cancelled! You are losing millions with the garbage you are trying to force upon us!

so sorry for so many additional comments. GAA is compeating with strong shows. I am still worried for GH, in many markets it will be compeating against some strong shows too such as Ellen and The Talk. Just like with DOOL it compeats in many markets with Yn R hence the low ratings. GH had a much better chance at the 3:00 pm time slot………….glad its still airing but hate the time change. Anyone else feel the same as me ?

I way prefer 3pm.

Yes, I’m very concerned for GH changing timeslots after decades in its current home. I will definitely not watch Katie or anything but GH on ABC.

I’m not worrying about GH competing against The Talk. The Talk has the same awful ratings as The Chew. GH will wipe out The Talk.

The only potential threat for GH is Days.

Hence ABC’s idea! However OLTL had better ratings so that should be a good thing!

My thoughts too, Sal. I am worried about the time slot change for GH. Put the mighty Miss Katie in the 2pm slot if they think she’s so great. Let her go up against Y&R and The Talk. But NOOOOO, they’re messing with GH. Like they want to see GH fail. I don’t understand it. If GH gets the boot, I will not watch ANY of ABC’s programming.

ABC/Disney deserves all the bad ratings they are getting. I want my OLTL back and that is the ONLY reason I would ever go back to watching ABC/Disney in the afternoon.

I could not agree more. We made it clear BEFORE One Life to Live ended that we would only watch that show and no replacement. Apparently they are thick over at ABC and think we will watch whatever garbage they throw out. Instead of spending all this money on shows and promotions for shows that NO one wants, use that money to bring back the cast and crew for OLTL. If there are those that have moved on and don’t want to return, re-launch the show with Erika Slezak and those that choose to follow her back. There are PLENTY of “Viki” stories that we are still waiting to watch!

ABC/D should admit their mistake in cancelling OLTL but they won’t.

Besides ABC (except GH), I’ve also quit watching NBC after what they did to Ann Curry. It was horrible. Ratings for the Today Show have gone down since because viewers are boycotting the show. Between ABC’s loyal soap fans, and the Today Show’s viewers outrage over Ann’s treatment, I call it the fan’s version of “Occupy” demonstrations. *What’s with these networks anyway?

Reply

Me too! I began watching Today after ABC cancelled AMC and OLTL. Now after what they’ve done to Ann Curry, I no long watch Today. It’s criminal what they did to her. She didn’t even get a proper send off.

If GH was supposed to be the lead-in to Katie’s new show, and they cancel GH, I’d be really worried (especially if I was Katie) about the reaction of what’s left of ABC’s afternoon soap viewers. I’m not so sure ABC’s learned from OLTL , AMC and The Revolution. But then again, maybe the risk/benefit bean-counter types have already factored this in.

what they should have done was to do what they did in 1997 between City ending to PC starting by airing classic episodes of AMC, OLTL, and GH. If GH is moving to the 2p/1p slot than why not air classic GH. From 1979 to 1995. Would love to see classic Tracy, Luke, Heather, Q’s, Anna, Robin, Noah, etc. It would even be a big lead in to new GH. The shows are suffering because of weak Lead ins. Y and R has the Price is right and BB has Y and R. GH had Revolution/Chew, and Days has Local News/etc.

See the difference?

Well, that would make too much sense and this is ABC/D we’re dealing with here. Apparently a dwindling viewership doesn’t bother them.

I believe I have heard that there is a period were videotape was used, then re-use after broadcast to tape a new show. As a result certain periods are gone, other than what viewers have salvaged.

Does any one have further information on this?

The definition of insanity is repeating the same action and expecting a different result.ABC daytime programming is simply insane!Bring back AMC and OLTL!

You reep what you sow. Garbage in, garbage out. No offense at all to the hosts (on the promos seem to be lovely, professional people) who were given an impossible task. Nothing will replace my One Life to Live and I will not watch any programming they throw into that time slot. My only ABC viewing is GH. Once again; note to the network: soap viewers cannot be trained!

Today, I cheated and watched the first 5 minutes of GAA, and it was AWFUL. Josh and Lara were asking personal questions via Twitter; it came off as inane so I switched channels and watched PBS until GH came on.

I don’t see any new soap replacements. GH is moving to 2PM with the hopes of some more OLTL characters.. Supposedly, old OLTL sets will be utilized with its actors — there is something askew with OLTL actors hanging in Kellys or at the dock. Hopefully, we’ll get to see more OLTL and perhaps AMC actors. Who knows?

In the meantime, GH has gotten better. I like Anna Devane. Heather is a hoot. This babyswitch is watchable. Starr and Michael are cute, but Molly and TJ are cuter. DsomethingD Kate is good and with her son, it’s only going to get better. In short, we need to watch so we can keep this show alive.

David with the big D, Don’t cheat no more, not even for 5 minutes the show sucks and like you said it’s insane, Abc is saving money they had 5 hosts now they are down to 2 that’s the only difference but it’s the same crap, lol.

I hope they do use the old sets from one life to live that will feel good to see that, How I miss visiting landview every day.

There are a few things I am not crazy about in Port Charles The dreaded kiss between John and Sam, the reality show and that idiot with the camera, and I am not that crazy about the new Kristina, But I agree with you about every thing else. I love Heather, she has to stay, She is, as you said a hoot, and I like Anna Devain as the head of the pcpd. And yes we have to keep watching to keep general hospital on for another 50 years, I’ll be watching.

I’m between a rock and a hard place – I want GH to survive, I’ve watched for 40+ yrs, but FV/RC have been disloyal to OLTL fans by changing Todd & McBain (RH&ME)characters. Todd nicer, McBain not loyal. I don’t want to watch GH if they are going to destroy the good OLTL stories. Especially JOLIE!

Yes David. You are so right. We need to keep the show alive. I am thankful that I get to see some of the OLTL characters, even if they are taken in directions that may not be so popular with OLTL fans. Please, lets all stand behind the one remaining ABC soap. It’s the only chance we have of getting through to the network.

I really cant figure out why ABC/Disney keeps putting on these half-baked replacement shows-I mean are they so stupid and blind they cant see what people want is our stories back and dont want this stupid crap they are trying to force on us.I have not watched anything on ABC with the exception of General Hospitial since One Life To Live was ripped off the air. These people who are running these networks need to be removed and someone who understands what we the people want is listen to and treated with respect and understand the network is on because of us-the fans-who watch.

What I want to know is when are advertisers going to start screaming they want more viewers/consumers for the dollars or they will start buying ad time on other Networks. ABC/Disney only cares abour money……..if no one is watching the replacement shows and the advertisers start leaving to buy ad time on other venues then and only then maybe ABC/Disney will admit they made a bad business decision and bring at least OLTL back.
I am still hoping they see the writing on the wall.

Here’s my take, you ticked off the wrong fans ABC!!!!! you think we want to watch anything in OLTL’s time slot? nope we don’t I don’t care what talk show you shove in there my TV is ABC silent during that time slot…….Of course I will DVR GH and if you happen to see where you could put OLTL back in that slot then of course I will watch but not any of the stupid replacement crap!

it’s very simple… we didn’t want GAA… so why are you surprised it is tanking? I loved OLTL and I think it on it’s own… it’s too late… but FV is working on something and we can only hope. ABC will continue to put crap on that we don’t want because they don’t care about what the customer (we) want.

ABC just does not learn. We want our soap back and nothing you put in it’s place will make us want to watch. Having two news shows within an hour of each other is not that interesting. I don’t need to know what is happening every minute of every day. Get with the program ABC, you know what will bring the viewers back so just do it already.

Heather isn’t this getting ridiculous? I can’t believe how dumb the people at the rat channel are, What’s the point of putting more garbage where the last garbage was? To much news, To much information, That will be One life to lives hour forever, Only program that will do good in the ratings in that time slot will be General hospital.

I agree with you Barbara, GH will be the only show that will do good in that time slot. They put more garbage there because they think they know what the viewers want to watch. If they really knew what the viewers wanted to watch then they would have never gotten rid of OLTL. They just can’t admit that they were wrong.

I love the idea of “Llanview, PA” returning to ABC. I also want more OLTLers on GH and I will start watching! Bring the whole Manning family! Jack and Patrick and dani!

Hey, ABC/D, your daytime fans predicted this BEFORE you announced the cancellation of the soaps. You should have listened to your customers. Dumba$$e$. Now nobody is happy. Get a clue, and whatever you do, DON’T cancel GH!

Regardless of how low and miserable the ratings get for these new replacement shows, ABC will NEVER put either an old soap back on or a new one because they are unwilling to foot the bill. As long as ANY sponsor will buy ads, they will keep shoveling this trash into our afternoons.

I wonder if the greedy corporate suits came out ahead anyway. If they did, they probably don’t care, as long as they and their stockholders are making money. They don’t have to worry about living paycheck to paycheck or losing their houses. We should still continue to boycott and try to hit them where it hurts, their pocketbooks. Maybe their shortsided-ness will cost them in the long run. Long live ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

When you do not take your fan base into consideration for the time of day you are putting shows on you get lousy ratings. All ABC had to do was listen to the fans and not taken away our stories even if they had to be scaled down to half hour shows, we would have given other shows a chance, but now we say you dont want us we dont want you.The only show on ABC I have tuned in for is GENERAL HOSPITAL, all other shows I watched on ABC (which amounted to about 10 hours of viewing a week or more) now are being viewed on other channels.

Bring back “One Life to Live!” It was ABC’s best soap!

Your right, One life to live was the best show, the best show abc will ever have, Daytime and Prime time.

Bring back our soaps ABC and you’ll see the ratings sky rocket again.

Here, here for that statement! I just wish whoever is at the top making all these bad choices would listen to their viewers. They should be fired, and bring back our soaps, don’t you understand soap fans are loyal to the end.

I am thrilled with the news that ABC is losing viewers after cancelling our beloved soaps. However, it is disappointing to see that GH is not doing better in the ratings. With only one soap left, I was hoping viewers and fans of the other two shows would rally together and help GH survive. As long as the show doesn’t improve in the ratings they are going to continue to believe that the genre is dying.

It is good news that abc is loosing viewers, And I like it even more that the revolution was cancelled and that good afternoon america program that is full of idiots is off to a rocky start and I hope it stays that way because we soap fans have to continue to let abc know we will never except any other programming where our soaps use to me. I am a One life to live fan and I miss it terribly, nothing has been right since it has been gone, so we fans have to do everything we can to save General hospital and still continue to boycott the shows that took over where our soaps use to be.

All I care about is it means GH is safe! I pretty much stopped watching OLTL the last few years. If I could have a soap back I would choose AMC instead. But my first priority is to keep GH on!

GAA is another embarrassment for D/ABC. This show is simply filling time until Katie starts in September and then it will be gone. The bigger issue to me is why haven’t The Chew’s ratings declined if people prefer soaps in the afternoon?

I didn’t even know they had a new show on, I’ve stopped watching ABC in the afternoon since they got rid of OLTL. I do occasional watch GH.

I’ll say it again…..I WILL NEVER WATCH ANYTHING IN THE OLTL TIME SLOT. We tried to warn TIIC before AMC was off the air and then OLTL was gone in January. They don’t care what the fans want or like, so they are reaping what they sowed. Their eventual demise is totally their fault. I don’t even want to watch ABC primetime.

You have a great point there Jane. ABC Primetime shows have been down in the ratings as well since OLTL and AMC went off the air.

I am going to be very honest when I say this–going into “rah rah” mode upon hearing any kind of news that any show that has replaced or will be replacing ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE is performing poorly in the ratings is pointless. Were AMC and OLTL pulling in double digits upon cancellation? No, they weren’t. And no; AMC and OLTL are NOT coming back.

About ten years ago, I tried to get back into watching soaps, particularly AMC and OLTL. Even then, I found myself struggling to get through an hour with both shows. If the six minutes of commercials per segment weren’t enough, it was the five-to-six scenes per segment, the uninspired writing, the dark and visually unappealing lighting, the lack of character development. Maybe I was spoiled too much watching soaps back in the 1980s, when they were in a much healthier state than they were in 2002 (and certainly today, considering there’s only four currently airing). College and work beginning in the early 1990s caused me to drift away from viewing, and even in 2002 it was amazing how much they had changed. Apparently soaps were only geared for the teenage and young adult set with no attention spans. That left me out.

One of the questions that nobody seems to dwell upon is why the clamor (or LACK thereof) over GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS being cancelled was nowhere near the hysteria of AMC and OLTL’s cancellations. Despite the use of hand-held cameras which made the show look cheap, I was able to watch GL in the late ’00s without a problem and personally it was my favorite soap until the end. I am more disappointed over GL’s cancellation than I am with the ABC soaps or anything else.

Here’s the bottom line, when you get right down to it: soaps are expensive to produce, especially in NYC where there is so little studio space compared to Hollywood (a no-brainer if ever there was one). Regardless of location, networks would rather save tons of money by producing reality programming where they don’t have to give singular stars inflated salaries. Not to mention all of the backstage crew involved. That’s where it all lies–in the green. Soaps are no longer the cash cows they were thirty years ago, and it’s considered laughable now but back then they were carrying the torch for all of primetime.

We can all ponder over the reasons why daytime serials lost their way, but I am not shedding tears for the cancellations of any soap opera in this day and age.

,
Soaps use to be much smaller with the cast and sets and crew etc etc..
The soaps do not need to have a cast of 30-40..
Soaps did extremely well with small casts, in the early years..
There is need to have over budget large casts, to tell great stories..
Soaps should not be a Hollywood production..
I thef cast and crew could be cut by 40% the soaps would be in good condition budget wise.

Dallas, Revenge, are two hard hitting very great soaps with cast of 12ish ..

Reprogram your DVR to record anything after General Hospital plays or your channel on your cable box will stay on ABC and make GAA ratings higher than they should be!

Wake up ABC we want OLTL back! At least make the old episodes available now that you also kille Soapnet!

TV Media Insight has the numbers for the whole week for this miserable thing …

DOUBLE-DIGIT EROSION FROM THE LEAD-IN AND ONE LIVE TO LIVE IN JULY 2011

One week of metered market (overnight) data does not a hit or miss make. But based on the week of July 9, Good Afternoon America on ABC, hosted by Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott, did not impress at a weighted 1.5 rating/5 share. Comparably, that was 17 percent below the lead-in average (1.8/ 6) and 29 percent below year-ago occupant One Live To Live (2.1/ 6). Losses in the three key demos from One Life to Live was 50 percent in women 18-49 (0.5/ 4 vs. 1.0/ 7), 46 percent in women 25-54 (0.7/ 5 vs. 1.3/8) and 33 percent in women 18-34 (0.4/ 3 vs. 0.6/ 4).

I wouldn’t watch bc of how fans have been treated regarding the cancellation of OLTL. I was not rewarded for being a long term fan of the soap! They will receive no reward from me! I do like Lara, but, I have never forgiven CBS and I wouldn’t consider supporting any daytime on ABC. I’m out unless they bring back their soaps. I watch RH and Co. on GH and that’s all. It Fox news and E news and Today on NBC.

To combine AMC and OLTL would be fantastic! I’m sure they have enough actors from both shows that would be interested.I never could stand Katie. So that show will never last. Wise up ABC. No more talk shows!.

ABC made a huge mistake by canceling All My Children and One Life To Live. Soap fans who have been loyal for years will not watch any new shows put in our soap time slots. Who is at the helm making all the expensive mistakes. Bring back our soaps and don’t change the time of General Hospital

ABC doesn’t realize how loyal soap fans are. Now you know. Good luck in getting a show to stick. Bring back all the soap operas that were cancelled and keep GH. Really dumb move ABC. Reminds me of the Jay Leno/Conan O’Briend debacle.

Congratulations to all the men and women in front of the camera and behind the scenes for their recognition as we take a look at who will be going for gold come June. Here are the nominees below starting with the Daytime Drama Categories.
