Is Y&R's Cane About To Become Soap Opera's Latest Pill-Popping Addict?

Courtesy/CBS

On The Young and the Restless, Cane Ashby (Daniel Goddard) has been in horrific pain following his knee surgery, which has taken him out of the loop for most of the normal day to day activities he has enjoyed throughout his life.

However, Cane looks to be primed to go down a dark path as he looks to be needing more and more of the painkillers prescribed for him post-surgery.

Tuesday’s episode of the top-rated sudser featured a scene where as the Winters/Ashby clan gather for Thanksgiving at Lily (Christel Khalil) and Cane’s, Lily turns on the TV.  They see Hilary (Mishael Morgan) introducing a compelling story about JJ, a homeless person who lost everything when she became an addict, but  now she is clean and sober. Then and ad for the Abbott-Winters Foundation follows this touching story.  When Neil (Kristoff St, John) wants to go to Crimson Lights, Cane urges Lily to take the twins too. Alone, Cane reaches for the painkillers.

What do you think of Cane becoming the next soap character to become a pill-popper? Does it upset you that the show is currently taking the character of Cane down this road, or do you think it will provide actor Daniel Goddard with a solid storyline to seek his teeth into? Comment below!

I woundnt be surpiseed

Yes, and they’re making it so obvious.

I’m already bored, unfortunately. I haven’t felt interested in anything they’ve done with his character in a long time. It’s a shame.

I liked it much better when he was seedier and sneaking around. Maybe when his old man comes back it will be interesting. With no offense to the character of Neil, I hope they don’t intend to m make an addict because I not in the mood to listen to Neil preach to him. what would really be interesting would be to have Nikki talk him down and the two of them have an affair. That would really shake things up. Jill would love that

Juicyyyy, soapqueenforever!!!! It has been a while since ‘the stepping-out’ days for Nikki.
Yes!!!! That would really put Jill in a tizzy. LOL.

Nikki? You would have to blow the dust off her!

That’s morbid, gross.

Soapqueen, my friend…. some people cannot see the humor…well, Timmmy did…
…about Nikki, I mean. “Blow the dust off her” is pretty funny. He gets it. LOL.

Penny: we are kidding….not serious!!!!! LOL. and, yes, it would be gross, but no more gross than Jack and Phyllis…..and so many others.
I suppose the double standard is still alive and well.

Yup!! You said it, Tay. This guy knows how to make my hackles rise.
I hope he pill-pops himself into oblivion.

Of course.. Cain will become Jack #2 dopper ..
Also–
Y&R has a lot of drinking, they all seem to be alcoholics.

Lots of pill popping and liquor in GC ..

Hopefully this is one of the story lines Sally does away with on December 7th.

Agreed.

Well, I guess it is a timely subject. And it will give Daniel something to do besides look good (well, gorgeous actually). Maybe if the material is strong enough he might even get his first Emmy nomination. My curiosity is whether Miss Prissy Britches will be as kind and compassionate to him as he was during her cancer scare. Hmm, why am I thinking NO?

No!!!!!

The last thing this show needs is another addiction storyline. We’ve already had Kay, Nikki, and Neil’s battles with alcoholism, Tracy’s addiction to diet pills, and Jack getting hooked on pain killers after Patty shot him a few years ago.

Cane’s been a bartender at Indigo, duped into thinking he married Amber, duped into thinking he was Chloe’s baby-daddy, posed as a faux Phillip Chancellor, revealed to be a mobster’s son, embezzled money from Tucker McCall, was nearly deported, helped Lily through her mostly off-camera bout with cancer, died only to be resurrected when it was revealed that it was his never before mentioned twin who was actually killed, helped Kay when she had a brain tumor, was used by Hillary in her attempts to destroy the Winters family, was pushed into sharing a kiss with Lauren, hid his knowledge of Devon and Hillary’s affair from Lily, was arrested for kidnapping Hillary, and nearly died in the Halloween fire at The Top of The Tower…and he’s still boring.

Face it, Y&R — you’ve tried and tried to make Cane interesting but he just isn’t. It’s time to let the character go so that Lily find a man worthy of her time (and ours).

OMG, you are so right. I can’t believe he’s been and done all that, besides sniffing around his own wife every chance he gets and fending off her suiters (Joe) A jerk of all trades matey!

As usual, Alan, you speak my language…..such an incredibly well-delivered post.
Cane has never had my vote from his first mumbled word on the Y&R stage. He is, basically, without personality. He, also, does not stir my baser female ‘instincts’….no attraction there….I do not find him interesting.
Seeing him thus, ‘crippled and needy’, creeps me out. TPTB should have kept Joe ( Scott Elroy) for Lilly and given Cane back to Chloe, another whiny, forced character.

Alan, you had me until your last paragraph. For me, Lily is just as boring, but she has the added annoyance of being, well, annoying and self-righteous. Forget the knee pain. Being married to someone like Lily would be all the motivation one would need to try to escape via painkillers, alcohol, etc.

I agree, James.
To me, Cane is much more interesting when away from Lily who still talks like a petulant Valley Girl.I like Cane, like the actor who plays him.
Give him a decent story.

LOL, James. That’s sooo funny. I like it. Lily does tend to put her ‘little-miss-goody-two shoes’ on more oft than not. But, honestly? I can sort of tolerate her much more than Cane.
I know Lily’s potential….Cane has not shown me a single positive facade.
Happy Thanksgiving, my friend.

James…A-M-E-N to what you’re saying (about Lily), Brother!!!!! At this point, I end up going into the next room until she stops talking…LOL!!!!! That’s how ANNOYING she is!!!!! Y-e-p.

Have a good one, Brother.

And the mystery, for me anyway, of the random placement of Reply buttons continues…

@jaybird: Thanks for the support as always. Take care, Friend.

@Celia: Thanks for your reply and support, too. As you know, I typically reserve my negative commentary for GG Sonny. But I decided to branch out… It’s interesting how fans have a myriad of opinions on various characters. Take care, Friend.

@Mrs Kravitz: I agree with you about Cane and Lily. A “decent story” would be most welcome. Maybe Cane could have a long-lost brother, Able, with whom he doesn’t get along. 🙂 Take care, Friend.

I agree with you, Alan. Cane as a character has outlived his usefulness. Sometimes addiction kills and this point may be addressed in the story. I would be open to a plot showing Lily dealing with widowhood and being a single mother. As for these plots, they come about with fanfare but then they disappear. In real life, additions and cancer and MS do not disappear. Even in remissions, those experiences remain part of individuals’ lives. I would like to see that. I am glad Cane has a story but another addiction tale seems repetitive to me.

I agree. What did happen to Nikki’s MS ? I don’t think Y & R does enough research on the topics. I also see this with Sharon’s bi polar disorder.

BWAHAHA LMFAO..you said a mouthful..all that danggone drama and yo butt STILL BORING as all get out. That’s jus sad and hilarious. And they need to stop broadcasting the lie you can’t pick up a drink without becoming a roaring alcoholic..or stub your toe take a ibuprofen and the next thing you know you’re in an alley full of dirty mattresses huddled over a fire in a trash can in a big dirty trench coat waiting for your illegal pill delivery.

Great recap and so true, Cane is a snore!

Hey, Timmmy,
Good one…..your dry, one-liners always send me.
Poor Nikki!!…..you don’t think she and Cane should give it a whirl?
Have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving , my Timmmy….love and peace to you and yours.

Agreed w/ Alan that they have tried to make this character work and for me, it doesn’t. Between places like Amazon Prime, Hulu, cable, & network… there are SO many primetime/web series these days. A guy that looks as good as Daniel w/ professionalism and some talent could (you would think) stay busy with guest star & day player roles in primetime – and eventually land something descent. So why he keeps putting up w/ the crappy stories on YR I’m not sure. It’s reached the point that I have no idea what he would be like as another character on another show, but I would be curious to see him cast as Andrew Donovan on Days or a slick con artist, long lost son of Jimmie Lee Holt on GH.

Exactly how many addicts can one cast have? I would much rather see Cane walk outside and get hit by a flying chihuahua and die. I mean seriously, his character is a bore. All they ever do is have Cane poke Lily and when he’s not doing that he is whining that he works too hard. Do us all a favor and bump his character off. He serves no purpose on this show. Sorry to say it. I like Daniel Goddard as an actor overall but his character has been slaughtered by the writers of past regimes and now he is too far gone to save. So can we launch those flying chihuahua’s now?

You are too funny! How about a flying kangaroo?

No, the chihuahua was funny.
Do not ruin a good joke.

Violet…how about a flying cheetah…or a flying giraffe…or a flying ostrich??? The possibilities here are endless…LOL!!!!!

Well – it looks like that is where Pratt was heading, but the new team stuff will be airing soon, so when I see what they are doing with this story I be more able to judge if Cane will be GC newest addict — I think the addiction to pills story was told to death with Jack’s addiction–so I am hoping the new writers will quickly put an end to that story

Ive never seen the point of this character period but maybe this storyline will change that

And you can’t even jump over to GH because Alexis is having her alcohol problems. I’m not expecting characters and stories where there are no problems, but we are getting one after another without any hopeful, happy ones. Again, more like how the news operates. No wonder so many people are in a funk.

Let’s pray that his addiction leads to one result…………………..

Australian Cane is convicted of some drug crime and is DEPORTED back to Australia, never to be seen in Genoa City again as he is permanently exiled from the United States.

This would accomplish two things: (1) It would allow Sussman to give us one of those “social message” plots that Bill Bell liked so much —- A comment about the legal state many immigrants face in the US; and (2) It would get RID of a completely useless, unappealing character.

Ok—we already have Nikki, Neil, and Jack (and once upon a time, Kay) with substance abuse problems—we can’t have a redux of this even if it is with a different character. If they go there, I am going to put the bug in their ear to change the name of the show to “The Druggies And The Alchies”.

I caught the show that day and what’s so dumb is all the camera has to do is show a character looking at a bottle of pills and the story writes itself. No guessing. No surprises. The audience is not stupid. We know exactly what that 3 second moment meant. This show (genre?) needs a creative renaissance if in a single glance, the audience can write the next 6 months of story themselves. Come on Sally!!!

“Cane” killers!

LOL

Maybe Cain.

fast forward time!
sorry, why his he still on the show?
of all the major characters that were unecesarilly killed off..john abbott, brad carlton, colleen carlton…tptb cave in to fan pressure and bring back this dud from the dead?!..lame-o

Ik wonder where this storyline will lead to… many ceo in real life are propping pills so this could go some where…. the problem is that the writers don’t invest in good writing for this character. He’s only on once a week..no wonder people find him boring…. they only invest in Billy… Cane should be given more airtime to make his storyline believable

It could work Eva. They would have to go all out and have Cane throw away his life and live on the streets. Lilly move on and have Cane slowly build his life again.

I’m sure every small town has more than a few folks strugh long with substance issues, so this isn’t unrealistic to me.

This show needs some interesting, charismatic (and good looking, of course!) younger-ish males while we are talking about Cane. Ben aka Stitch, Devon (puh-llease!), JT not jelling well as Billy. Travis was borderline OK until they totally spun his personality and behavior around. And of course Nick who is a legacy character and tolerable. Kevin I like him but he has zero chemistry with everyone. And for pete’s sake find someone for Ashley and give her a storyline! They let Michael E. Knight get away, although his character was a dud. Bring him back as as new character so his personality can shine thru. Heck, they did that with ME at GH, why not with Michael? Sorry, we were talking about Cane but he is so boring I changed the topic, LOL! Rant over.

Good rant!

I’m N-O-T buying this…AT ALL!!!!!

Well hopefully this will make him a bit more interesting. The only thing that Lily and Cane ever do is bed hop. Did anyone notice we got Tracy Abbott back for a day? Seriously what the hell was that? Why can’t we get the greats back on a permanent basis?

Had tuned out after Michael Muhney left but after reading about the changes the new regime had planned I gave a look. They have made some improvements in lighting and sets which were needed. Still waiting to find the “compelling” plots they have promised and this isn’t one of them. The actors are fine but, Cane & Lily have to be the most lethargic couple ever. This possible story isn’t going to do anything to fix that. Cane struggles, Lily frets, they split, he recovers, they reunite……zzzzzzzz.

Maybe in a drug induced stupor he should sleep with Hilary and blow apart both couples. Then, he & that annoying character can run off to Australia.

No !! please dont let Kane and Lily Fall Apart, dont make him an addict, but if you do, please don’t let it interfere with him and Lily’s relationship please !!.

No dont do it, Jack already did this not so long ago. Come up with a fresh storyline please

As much as I don’t know exactly what happened to Cane, to cause him to have right knee surgery, we are in the same boat! I too, just had right knee replacement surgery and find myself in agony every time he moves! Mine , however is real, not a storyline!!The therapy today was so true, I’m calling mine, torture sessions! As far as the drugs go, it’s been 6 weeks for me, and I’m pretty much done with them. I do understand the storyline to become addicted, but sometimes it’s just not necessary, you don’t always have to go there!

I think they need to stop using the same story line over and over again just on different characters…pills alcohol….seems like they are running out of things to write about
