John-Paul Lavoisier Debuts On Days of our Lives! What Were Your First Impressions?

Courtesy/NBC

Courtesy/NBC

On Thursday’s episode of Days of our Lives, viewers finally got to see the highly anticipated return to daytime by One Life to Live favorite John-Paul Lavoisier (Ex-Rex).

The actor has stepped into the role of Phillip Kirakis on the NBC daytime drama, and on his first airdate, Phillp return to Salem to help his father Victor (John Aniston) with Titan Industries, now that Brady (Eric Martsolf) has stepped down to spend more time with his son Tate, and Theresa (Jen Lilley).

In scenes re-introducing the character of Phillip, it is clear that this is a take-no-prisoners version, who’s intent is on heading up Titan, proving his worth to his father, and to keep Brady from being part of it.

In his first episode, Lavoisier shared scenes with John Aniston, Eric Martsolf, Peggy McCay (Caroline) and Suzanne Rogers (Maggie).   And it is, Maggie who is clearly suspicious of Phillip’s motive for being back in Salem, and his desire to cash in on the drug that has helped save Caroline, but that is causing her to have some serious premonitions – one of which is that something terrible is about to happen to Victor!

Is Phillip poised to take over the family business? Is he all about power? Who will be the lady love in his life now that he is Salem?  Share your thoughts on this, and what were you first impressions of JP on Days of our Lives in the comment section below!

The new Phillip is meaner than Rex was.

Rex spent undisclosed time in a U F O! He has probe reasons for having anger issues!!!

First impression: Bad hair. I couldn’t take my eyes off his long dark hair. I was expecting short and blond. Or at least short. It’s too early to tell anything about his story. I’m sure he’s going to do very well though. Love him 😉

Yeah I liked him with short blond hair.

I thought the same thing! I could not get past the hair, and I hate to say that. I thought it made him look a lot older, too. I like him as an actor but still wishing it was JKJ. Glad Philip is back but wishing they had given JP a fresh role, like Theresa’s brother Andrew.

Interesting, Reagan! I like that.

Absolutely agree. He looked so much older. I know its superficial but I hated his hair with a passion. It’s only been 3 years since OLTL went off the air, he looked significantly more than 3 years older. Still luv him though.

I agree! Cut the hair!

Phillip should remember that he had a sister Isabella who had a son Brady. If Victor wants Brady involved in Titan again there is nothing Phillip can do about it. Phillip should also be reminded that Victor’s grand children; Phillip’s niece Ciara and nephew Tate also have a legal claim to Titan. I think Maggie is smart to be suspicious of Phillip and his motives. In my opinion that guy is a trust worthy as a rattlesnake in a rat’s nest.

“…I think Maggie is smart to be suspicious of Phillip and his motives. ”

this is going to be my favorite part.

I haven’t seen the ep… so, i’m going to say from the get go…. I have never liked his acting… from what little bits i’ve seen on OLTL… and I do not; like his hair.

if this unfolds like; yours and JimH… then I can rest easy .. and hope… that this is just a guest starring arc

meh

I really wanted this to happen for Xander…. that his uncle Vic would have taken him under his wings and propelled Xander to the top of the heap… as a true Kiriakis Man of yum

am still hoping their is a connection down the road… between Xander and Vincent Irizarry’ Deimos…. (father and son?)

Xander acted circles around Eric, Daniel, and Brady

You are correct. Paul Telfer is a more compelling actor than JPL. The new DOOL writing team should bring him back.

I love him, I think he’ll do great. One tiny thing, though…JPL needs a haircut.

I agree, it makes him look older.

Yep, he plants to take Titan from Victor and it’ll be Brady who saves the day…then Victor will regret letting Brady go and reluctantly accept Teressa back into the family…Philip and Ava are actually secret lovers-this will eventually be revealed…Nicole will briefly be romantically tied with Philip after Dan is killed by drunk driving Erik who will be remorseful and leave Salem to return to the priesthood!…ok…just a guess!…lol

plans…lol

@Jimh

Now that would be a fun plot.

Thanks…i think so too!

It’s great to see John-Paul again. Loved him on One Life to Live. My first impression of Philip – he’s an opportunistic snake. Don’t trust him for a second. Since I’m new to this show, I looked up the character background and read that Kate is his mother. OMG. Maggie is wise to keep a very close eye on this one.

Kate is hardcore!!!!!! She cant even keep track of her own kids!!

Phillip actually works for the same organization that Eduardo works for. He has been ordered by his employers to get control of Titan at any cost even if that means killing his brother Brady, his father Victor and any other relatives. Belle also factors into Phillip’s plans. She has access to the all the money Sami took from the DiMera’s. Phillip has been ordered by the Organization to use what ever means necessary to get that money. Phillip is completely and totally loyal to the organization which makes him far more dangerous than Eduardo who is having second thoughts about his involvement.

Susan, do you know all this as “fact”, or is it speculation/wishful thinking?

I find it so boring and yawn-inducing when shows completely change characters from how they were in a first incarnation. As played by Jay Kenneth Johnson, from 1999-2002, Phillip was a lovable goofy kid who had no real interest in the family business, and acted as sort of a moral compass for his wayward parents. He had a natural easy going charm, and had chemistry with everyone. A real young hero. During his second go-round, the powers that be had no idea how or what they wanted Phillip to be, and the confusion showed with the actor’s performance. Sometimes, he was needlessly angry, pointlessly arrogant, and sneering for no good reason. It was clearly not a Phillip that he knew how to play, or that the writers knew how to write. MEMO TO SOAP WRITERS: just because parents are bad, doesn’t mean ALL their children will turn out that way! I loved when Chad was a moody slacker, it was such a refreshing change from the old adage that ALL Dimera’s have to be evil, or battle the “dark side”. Chad didn’t even know he was a DiMera until a few years ago, so why would he be a victim of this curse? John Paul excels at comedy, and he has also has a natural easy going charm and presence. I hope the writers play to that more as he gets firmly rooted in the role. Otherwise, they are wasting a very capable, charismatic actor. It would be SO nice to see a Kiriakis or a DiMera with NO interest in cutthroat business!!

I agree Dylan. Well said. Loved JKJ’s Philip; sweet and charming. Not sure yet on new actor, too soon to tell but hope they don’t make him all business and unlikable.

ya!

Gee, I’m rich, and I can be a nice guy! Let’s go for that!!!!

From what I remember, Phillip has always been willing to get a little dirty to get what he wants, especially in the business world. Wasn’t that why Stephanie broke up with him? So this does not surprise me. Not having him back in time for Bo’s funeral was lame.
JKJ’s Phillip & Nadia as Chloe were so good together, in my opinion. Would be interested to see if JP could have that chemistry with Nadia, but please get a hair cut! Ha.
Speaking of Stephanie… I think she should pay Patch & Kayla a visit!! Perhaps in this time away she’s discovered she’s a lesbian or bi. The right casting of Stephanie could be hot with Ava, especially since Days killed of their LGTB story line w/ Will & Sonny.

How twisted are you? You want Patch and Kayla’s STRAIGHT daughter, to have a random lesbian fling with a psychotic murderer who has tormented and tried to kill her parents????? Um…..where did you grow up?

Ha- “straight” characters come out or get rewritten as gay often on TV. A lesbian story line is lacking on daytime, and DAYS screwed up with their Will/Sonny ending. Stephanie is tied to the Brady’s, so I thought she would be a good character to explore a lesbian/bi-sexual story with instead of bringing on two random, new characters with no ties to the canvas. The actress that plays Ava did a great job (despite the writing) as a lesbian character on AMC. It would make for a wild soap story. As far as where I grew up… there is a huge difference in the soap world and the real world. Kind of cruel comment there, Dylan.

You know when the Billy role was being recast (again) on Y & R, JP would have been a terrific Billy. He has that devil-may-care, fun vibe (when needed) that has been sorely lacking since Billy Miller split. We will see how the new recast does, however. Wish they would have considered JP. And he seems somewhat age appropriate, more so than Jason Thompson.

Yeah, Jason Thompson is a great actor but looks nothing like Billy, Jack, or Ashley. Have a hard time seeing him as Billy. JP might have man an interesting choice. I thought Brandon Barrash (sp?) would have been interesting as I hear he is a really funny guy.

And Burgess Jenkins looks older than Jack even though his character is supposed to be 35 years younger?

Good call, Jo-Jo!

My first thought: Y&R missed an ideal casting opportunity AGAIN by not hiring John-Paul to play Billy Abbott, the next best thing to Billy Miller.
Loved him as Rex Balsom and would watch him in anything, regardless of his hair.

Hate to be trivial, but he needs a new hairstyle. Otherwise, he’s playing the villain oh so well. I don’t go back that far with Days, but the previous Philip was not evil, right?

Not at all. He was mostly chasing Belle and Chloe in those days

He was nice Phillip. He was like me…just a nice guy. )

Not a fan! But that can change

Not a fan either Sansie! I lent to his gym a few years back- he had some ego! Ugh.

That said – the dude can act, and is handsome as hell! Lol

Loved him as Rex but hope he keeps the mugging here to a minimum, what worked for Rex won’t work for Phillip.

it could and should.

I’m glad John- Paul is in the role; I like him and his long hair. Give him a chance in the role before the complaints begin!

Yep—he’s Philip. I noticed he had Philip’s mannerisms down pat. He’ll last for a while.

love the new phillip and I love his hair, the right look and he has peaked my interest in Days,at last an exciting new male, eric, brady and daniel bored me,cannot wait to see who they pair him with, the eciting theresa, belle or nicole! days you are my number one soap again!

Did some you expect Philip to waltz in with Rex ‘ s dated choppy messy frosted mop top? He needs to look slick and grown up. Nothing says sleazy buisness man like slicked back hair.

Boooo! To me, the ONLY Philip Kiriakis IS and WILL always be…Jay Kenneth Johnson. I hate recasts! Also NOT looking forward to Brandon Beemer replacing Jason Cook as Shawn D. coming up. Two far inferior actors playing two beloved roles.

“…Two far inferior actors playing two beloved roles ”

the SORAS kids aren’t much better… (Ciara, TJ, Chase, Joey, Claire)

this is – seven – actors… who are in the younger demographic that DAYS will feature and REEL

oy! I am not looking forward to most of this

TJ is Theo

is Andre a caricature and cartoonish?

have John and Marlena run it’s course?

Is Hope all that and a bag of chips without ; Bo and Aiden, and Lauren Boles?

Are Peggy McKay, John Anniston, and Joseph Mascolo; retiring?
OK… it’s clear Stephano is

will the exit of Eric… after running over Daniel… LOL ( I can’t wait for this) also plummet Nicole… who has no scenes with any thing new on the canvas with the new headwriting team

GET RID of Melissa Reeves’ Jennifer

it’s a sorry excuse to waste the biggest talent DAYS has… Kassie DePaiva

where are the best talents? Justin, Adrienne, Lucas, Eduardo, Kate, Maggie, Victor, … wow! where is everything palatable ???

1. I truly hope… Chad and Abs… continue to electrify the audience… sans no real supporting cast in both their families

2. with the exception of JJ and Gabs… too cute to not mention
3. will Eduardo and Kate simmer… they already are…
4. Kayla and Steve… they smolder on screen
5. Vincent Irizarry’ Deimos
6. Matthew Ashford’ Jack Deveraux

it’s long in the tooth to figure out whats next… now that the big “finale” of the 50th Anniversary is in the can…

I’m going to so miss Eve and Aiden

where is the fresh, buoyant, fun, smile ready, charismatic, chip off the ole block… dad victor and vivacious Kate ? ! ? ! OMG … JKJ and KB personified both Victor and Kate…. the easy going nature… is all wrong with JPL

not in to him

===-Thaao Penghlis (Andre) has always been one of the best reasons to watch DOOL. The man is a genius at what he does. Now if they could bring back LeAnn Hunley.

== No marriage is perfect; there are bumps along the road. John and Marlena have hit a rocky patch but their marriage will survive.

===- Hope should never been defined by her relationships with Bo, Aiden etc. She has never been just an appendage for some man. Hope is a strong woman capable of living life without a man. You insult Hope and Kristin Alfonso with your implication.

===All three of these people are in their 80’s. I’ve heard rumours that John Anniston wants to leave the show. Joe (Stefano) is not well. The actress who is Caroline may have also decided it’s time to leave as well.

==== Ava is truly a whack job who is more than obsessed with Steve. However, anything that brings Tamara Braun back to daytime is perfect.

===Well there are rumours that the writers will have Phillip and Theresa come together so Nicole can have Brady back. Victor would be very unhappy!!

Jennifer (Melissa) is a legacy character who always belong on the canvas. Also there are many people who like Jennifer. Melissa is very good! She is, for many, one of the most beloved on DOOL. Many long time fans watched her grow up on the show.

=== I agree that the writers have wasted a golden opportunity. Kassie (Eve) could have been paired with Roman or better yet Justin. Can you just imagine Eve confronting Ben after he was brought back to Salem?

====You have to remember that what we are watching on Days was filmed six months ago. That would have been approx June. Wally Kurth is also on General Hospital. Judi Evans may have been on holiday with her family. Bryan Dattilo and his wife have a new baby; he may have wanted to spend time with his new bundle of joy. And the other actors mentioned may also have either been on holiday or were not needed by the writers.

==Sorry but Abby will need her mother Jennifer! You obviously don’t have a lot of experience with new mothers. Think of what Abby has been through being trapped with that psychopath Ben. Then being forced by Ben to give birth prematurely in that motel room after he attacked her. Having Chad is nice but there are conversations that Abigail will need to have with her mother. And you also have to factor in the anger from female fans if it looks like Abigail is being abandoned by her mother at this time.

===After all the problems with Jason Brooks I doubt they will be bringing him back. Kristen Alfonso more than didn’t get along with Jason. If they do bring Jason back Kristin will refuse to work with Jason unless there are others in the scene. So no romantics scenes!! Melissa Reeves no longer matters? Speak for yourself. After the problems that took place on the set when the affair between Melissa and Justin was discovered, Ken Corday may have wisely decided Justin is not worth the trouble. With NBC threatening to pull the plug the last DOOL needs is the hostility that will take place on the set if Justin shows up.

=I’m going to give John Paul Lavoisier a chance as Phillip. Of course he not the same man who left Salem years ago. A lot has changed since then. Phillip went to the middle east, joined the ISA (or so I read) those two are more than enough to change a man. Men who go off to fight on a battlefield(s) are never the same when they come home. I’m a social worker who works for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Trust me I know. We have no idea what Phillip experienced in Iraq. Expecting Phillip to be the same “fresh, buoyant, fun, smile ready, charismatic, chip off the ole block…” after all this time is in my opinion a fantasy.

He doesn’t look the part he is playing with that hair.

Don’t like JP as Philip. He needs a haircut. We’ll see, but thus far, not impressed. And all that drug mumbo jumbo bored me.

DAYS production… “casting dept” really should have come from; the standbpoint

he brings the best of both worlds… that being… Victor and kate

JKJ ; and KB
intrinsically brought

Victor and Kate…with child, were; beside themselves; besotted;reigned in… their otherworldly

two parents… two lovers… two beings who parented a live vision

Phillip Kiriakis

a magic unfolded…

JPL is not their

Anyone mentioned bad hair yet? lol

Cut the ugly greased back hair and then he might have a chance at being looked at as an actor. The hair has to go.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES
is so dull lately – the “new writing team” killed off Will (big mistake) and they allowed Sonny to leave (why couldn’t they recast him?) and Derrick is just gone without any real explanation – and Paul is left adrift. I don’t strictly watch for the gay characters (well, they are gone anyway) but I feel that there isn’t anything attracting me to Days.
I can’t stand this “Andre” character, his cornball acting and I also can’t take Stefano with his monosyllabic unconvincing dramatics – to me, the shows of yesterday featuring Sami, Will, EJ, Abigail, Sonny (just two years ago) were better than what they have going on now. The show is dull to me and without any gay characters to relate to –
well, my “days” of watching “days” may be coming to an end.

DAYS is far from dull.

Take a good, long, hard look at your comment. Your comment is very similar to comments made when Will and Sonny were on. The majority of those comments were paranoid Will and Sonny fans would say things like “Will and Sonny are the only good thing about DAYS” and “DAYS would be no good without Will and Sonny.”

You and other posters thought you could propell Will and Sonny by slamming the rest of DAYS, but it backfired. You could’ve and should’ve supported them without spreading hate for the others.

Will and Sonny were used to gain more viewers, but many of those viewers simply tore into the rest of DAYS, which caused potential viewers to stay away.

Will’s flesh is rotting off his bones because of “fans” like you!

Wow, holy cow, you are really out there.
Besides liking Will and Sonny, I also liked Paige (but they killed her off) and her romance with JJ, and I liked Sami Brady with EJ (but they killed him off and she is not a regular on the show) and to me, right now, the show is kind of dreary and needs a stronger driving storyline.
It’s my OPINION – I didn’t “hate” on anyone – I don’t happen to care for the character of Andre and I think Stefano’s lines are few and infrequent and not DELIVERED in a terribly convincing manner and I am expressing my OPINION.

What about his (missing) leg??

Not impressed at all does nothing for me.

Haven’t seen the new Phillip much, and I like to give new actors a chance to develop in their roles, but I have to admit that I liked and miss JKJ in the role. As someone said, he had a blend of being sweet and cunning at the same time. Not to mention those adorable dimples, smile, and mischievous eyes. With that said, willing to give the new Phillip a chance and time to see how he grows in the role.

Days Of Our Lives

Stephen Schnetzer Talks On His Return to Days of our Lives and Working with Susan Seaforth Hayes In Emotional Episodes

Who says you can’t go home again? In the case of Another World favorite, Stephen Schnetzer (ex-Cass Winthrop), he has proven that it is true, and you can go back to your soap roots and where it all started for you.

Last week on April 11th, Schnetzer, along with several other key returns were on set at Days of our Lives taping all-new episodes of the Peacock streaming soap opera, centering on the funeral of Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes), and as part of the iconic soap opera’s 15,000th episode.

Stephen is reprising his first daytime role as Steve Olson, the brother of Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes). The last time Schnetzer appeared on a DAYS set was during his one and only run on the show from 1978 to 1980. Clearly, viewers will be in for some very emotional scenes when Steve returns to Salem to be there for his sister, Julie in her time of need. In real-life, Susan has been going through her own grief, having just lost Bill back on January 12th at the age of 98.

Photo: NBC

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Stephen during the 15K episode celebration ceremony, and during a break from taping the gut-wrenching funeral scenes, to get his thoughts on being part of these highly-anticipated moments that will air later this year in December. Here’s what he shared with us below.

What has this been like for you to work with Susan Seaforth Hayes after all of these years?

STEPHEN: She’s a dream and she’s so bright. We ran lines yesterday and we ended up just visiting for about 45 minutes and just catching up and telling tales about each other’s career. She even dropped off the autobiography that she and Bill did. And being back here at DAYS, every time I turn a corner, there’s another familiar face. When I was on the show 40 more years ago, a bunch of the guys, played softball on a team together. This is really a trip down memory lane as I knew it would be.

Photo: JPI

Taping Doug’s funeral must be a hard day for Susan. Are you checking in with her to help hold her up through this?

STEPHEN: I am and I’m checking in with Amy Shaughnessy (Susan’s assistant), and she’s holding her up more than anybody. We’re there for each other.

There will obviously be some major hankie-inducing moments when Steve comes back to Salem to console his sister.

STEPHEN: Oh, wait till you see it in December. It’s going to be great.

Were you surprised you got this call to come back to the show decades later?

STEPHEN: It was out of the blue! I was completely surprised. They should have called me decades ago! That’s what surprised me. When Another World went down, I thought I’d land somewhere else and it never happened. That was more of a surprise.

Cass is such an identifiable character for you. As well, you and Linda Dano (ex-Felicia Gallant) are so synonymous together as best friends Cass and Felicia from Another World. When fans heard you were reprising your role as Steve Olson on DAYS, they are now hoping there will be more of you on the show to come.

STEPHEN: Steven Olson is a real “Cassian “character. I cut my teeth on Steve Olson and that’s how Cass was introduced. He was kind of a roguish charmer. And then when the character stuck for Another World, they rehabilitated me, and turned me into one of the shows heroes. And that’s what would’ve happened if I stayed as Steve Olson probably. So, Steve is the ‘pre-Cass’, Cass.

As the story goes, you originally decided to leave Days of our Lives?

STEPHEN: I was never on contract. I was doing a day and a half a week and I got a Broadway play directed by Franco Zeffirelli starring Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay. I was able to it as I didn’t have to break a contract or anything. I cut loose and went back to New York for that.

How well did you get to know Bill Hayes during your first time around on DAYS?

STEPHEN: My first episode was with Bill and Susan, as her long lost brother coming into Salem. They were so good to me. They were so kind. I had been doing eight years of classical repertory theater, never been in front of a camera. I tell everybody, it took me longer than any other actor I’ve ever seen to get comfortable in front of a camera. And they were very supportive at that time in my career. Coming back to honor Bill now in 2024, and to be see Susan, I am just so happy to be here.

Looking forward to seeing the scenes between Stephen and Susan Seaforth Hayes come December and Doug’s funeral and surrounding episodes? Do you hope that DAYS might bring the character of Steve Olson back for a longer stay? Comment below.
