Kelly Ripa Goes Mysteriously Absent From "Live" After Michael Strahan Decides To Join "GMA"!

Courtesy/ABC

There is a major soap opera going down behind the scenes that Kelly Ripa is no stranger to having inhabited the life of Hayley Vaughan on All My Children, and having gone through a major co-host change before.

After the news earlier this week that Ripa’s Live with Kelly and Michael co-host, Michael Strahan decided to join Good Morning America full time come September, sources say Ripa was taken completely off guard and is upset.

At the top of Wednesday morning’s episode of “Live”, Strahan addressed the  studio crowd and viewers at home that he is indeed making this full time change, while guest co-host Ana Gasteyer stood by as Strahan received, “boo’s”.

Nowhere to be found was Ripa, and a source close to the show toldVariety that she was angry after ABC executives gathered her, Strahan, and the show’s staff together at the end of Tuesday’s taping to reveal that Strahan would end his run at “Live” in four months, then move full time to “GMA.”   Immediately afterward, the network announced the move publicly. That night, Strahan received a call from the show telling him that Ripa would not be coming to work the next day.

Sources said Ripa was surprised and angered by the lack of notice she received before the announcement. Her representatives did not respond to Variety‘s requests for comment. ABC confirmed late Wednesday that Erin Andrews will fill in for Ripa on Thursday and Friday, with the latter show pretaping tomorrow, and that Pretty Little Liars co-star Shay Mitchell will co-host with Strahan on Monday.  Meanwhile an ABC spokesperson said Kelly’s absence is due to “a previously scheduled vacation,” which many do not believe.

Meanwhile Strahan stated on Wednesday’s episode, “Kelly welcomed me here and I’ve learned so much from her, and she’s just been an amazing influence on me and this has truly changed my life to be with her.”

When Ripa does decide to come to work the plan is for Strahan to be beside her five days a week until his new job begins. Then Ripa faces a possible situation much like the one she endured five years ago, finding a successor following the departure of original host Regis Philbin.

So will Kelly show up at “Live”?  Do you think Strahan made the right decision to leave the syndicated talker for “GMA”?  Who should be Kelly’s next co-host if she decides she wants to continue with the show?  Comment below.

A little publicity cant hurt…

They should give some to GH..

you watch that talk stuff? if so- why would you? ahaa!

I havent watched a talk show in ages…

They could give a talk show to Nina and Nathan and call it “Live with Dumb and Dumber!”

I do watch–and I think it was very ungracious of Michael to conduct his business that way. Anyone can be kind. i would be hurt if I were Kelly to receive that kind of news at the eleventh hour–and in that manner.

He blindsided her. Not what you do to someone you called a friend. I am very pissed at him and ABC for the way this was handled. Kelly would have supported his move, I am sure, if she had been given some warning that this was coming. ABC had been on my SH** list since they arbitrarily cancelled AMC and OLTL. This is just one more crappy move on their (Disney/ABC) part. I plan to quit watching GMA an will become a TODAY SHOW fan.

Oh cry me a river—she makes ten million dollars a year and works maybe three hours a day. Get tough, cream puff and talk to folks with real problems,

Hey Harry, she does make 20 millions dollars–but I’ll bet she cries real tears just like the rest of us working stiffs, don’t you? LOL!

I agree with you 100%. The ABC announcement was weak at best. It should’ve come from Michael during their show. Today he didn’t thank or mention her until the end. It was like a child being reminded to say thank you. I’m ok with him leaving to a struggling ship, but don’t treat the people that helped you get there so poorly. Also I didn’t like it when he said he was close by to co-host- I think that ship has sailed.

He is a classless jerk! She will find a better partner and be thankful in the end!

CBS Morning show is excellent. Interesting, intelligent news that includes entertainment, but not it’s reason for being. And without all the Disney and “perky” show business stuff. But like you I pretty well tuned out of ABC after they cancelled OLTL and AMC and left us with replacements that didn’t get ratings and have been cancelled.

I agree Rose, Charlie Rose is a first class individual!

Only thing I tune into in the morning. Very little “fluff” and I think the combo of Charlie Rose, Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King is perfect. I will admit that when I first saw Gayle King was on my first thought was…oh, brother. But, I have come to really like her and love the banter and the way she gets Rose to laugh. My only complaint is that I wish it was on longer than the 2 hours.

Agreed Charlie Rose and Co…R dedicated to brining us News,
interesting stories & interviews. Unlike the overblown nonsense
on ABC and NBC hasn’t been the same since Bryant Gumble left.

I don’t think it’s up to ABC to manage whatever personal or professional relationship is between Ripa & Strahan. They did their professional duty by announcing it to the show personnel with plenty of advance time. Strahan should have been the one to contact Ripa *personally.* That’s not ABC’s job. Strahan has a phone & sees Ripa 5 days a week. Nothing was stopping him from having a private conversation with Ripa in person. That said, I don’t think its “bad” for anyone to take advantage of a great opportunity. If the same offer had been extended to Ripa & she had accepted, I’d be happy for her too.

4 days a week. They pre-tape Fridays on Thursday.

I agree with everything you’ve said. Michael at least owed Kelly the courtesy of telling her first before allowing the news to become public. Michael only got the job because Kelly wanted to work with him.

Vicki,

This is no way meant as a reflection on your choices, but in my opinion, the TODAY SHOW is no better. Matt Lauer got rid of Ann Curry and I have had ZERO respect for that program since showing the killer’s video tape from the Virginia Tech massacre years ago. Yeah, they had permission to do so but it was disgusting and just to get ratings. Talk TV is just that … talk … be it so-called morning “news” or panel shows.

Strahan’s lack of decency in speaking up to Ripa and doing all behind her back speaking k s volumes. Non are worth it

He may not have been allowed to say anything until he was given the go-ahead by ABC. From what I understand (and I have friends at the network) this deal came together very quickly. This talk of no-advance notice. He is still going to be with the show full-time for an additional four months. Most people, when quitting a job, give two weeks.

YOU SAID THAT CORRECTLY…..DO NOT BOTHER TO TURN ON EITHER SHOW IN THE A.M. THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER THINGS WORTH ONES TIME RATHER THAN THESE SHOWS!!

I think there are several issues here.

1. ABC mishandled Ripa. They ought to have told her privately, not in a group, and she should have heard it before everyone else.

2. Strahan has every right to do what he feels is right for him to do. If Ripa is pissed for any other reason other than not being told privately first, she is being a hypocrite, and acting like the entitled soap fans who are personally outraged when an actor chooses to leave a role (ahem, STEVE BURTON, ahem). If she is allowed to leave AMC to co-host a morning show with Regis Philbin, she ought to understand what’s going on as far as Strahan’s career goes.

She or he can do as they please. When you are shoulder to shoulder with someone every week you expect to have a bond. She feels slighted. He may have been under strict orders not to say anything. Kelly has been on the show forever. If Strahan didnt say anything, she felt her bosses should have told her. Either way, they will both succeed.

Timmm. Soooo agree about Charlie Rose, not just on CBS, but also his show on PBS.

I totally agree, Timmm. She has every reason to be upset. I feel bad for her.

Since Kelly has been with this show as long as she has, I think ABC should have given her a heads up to what they were going to do sooner. I also think Michael should have told her what he was planning to do. I realize a lot of this might have been sudden; but someone clearly knew what was going on.

I think Kelley’s husband Michael would be great with her on the show

Her husband’s name is Mark. Her eldest son’s name is Michael.

I thought her husband’s name was Mateo.
Doesn’t he have a sister named Dr. Maria Santos?

I second the emotion–have seen them together when he guest hosted. They are fun together.

OH please no! It’s bad enough with her on the show…

ELITE ADVISORS, eh? Wow, sounds impressive!

I agree, but maybe too much publicity for him? They seem to have managed to stay together for so long with her being the one in the major spotlight. I still think they are cute together, but sometimes working together is too much. Hopefully the right thing will be done.

Oh Kelly, get over and be the bigger person, you still have job to do and you have many fans that like the show otherwise ABC would pull the plug. Let Michael go to GMA, you will find another co-host. You did not treat the last host well after he left and now your acting like your high school, GROW UP!

I have never be fan of hers on this show or AMC , she’s too much drama!

Kelly Ripa is a diva, and a drama queen. ABC Better warn Kelly, to come back or you lose your job. I used to like Kelly, but now she is a brat and a Diva.

Your right, this Fall it could be “Live with Erin and Anderson!”

Agreed… she is annoying at best….so tired of her attitude…. who does she think she is? She was an average at best actress who was lucky enough to get a shot with Regis… and to thank him, she never even kept in touch… what GOES around COMES around….

from “Wiki” : After twenty guest appearances over two years, Strahan was selected as Kelly Ripa’s new co-host on September 4, 2012, marking his first official day on the rechristened syndicated talk show, Live! with Kelly and Michael. Ratings instantly surged, impressively generating year-over-year

Kelly Ripa is not the star she thinks she is…. Regis and Strahan Were are “are” the show

“she” plays the shtick well enough… but when it comes to actually sharing and conversing with the guests… she falls flat…it’s not cute any more

Ryan Seacrest , since American Idol over

Love it!

May Ryan Seacrest

I definitely think Strahan made the strategic correct move. He was great on Live, but the show is silly fluff heading nowhere. I could sense tension or friction from Ripa, mainly because the comedy and laughs came easier for Strahan. Personally, I think they should replace her as well. Would love to see her back on soaps again, she became really great on AMC. However, her and BFF Anderson Cooper will probably take the helm come September. Please, just NOT her husband!

We really have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. We all feel a certain way about our jobs and coworkers that no one else knows/feels so calling Kelly names without knowing the facts isnt really fair. We may never know! Michael has a right to choose another job too.

You say it well, Ces! But he could have been more gracious and thanked her up front–and looked “sincere” when he did so–LOL! And it would have helped had he looked into the camera when he did so.

Thanx Nancy! Lol!! Ya know, I have never even watched that show except when it was Regis & Kathie Lee.

Wasn’t a fan of Michael so I stopped watching. Now maybe I’ll watch again.

Amen Rod.

He was a tad too perky for me. Hell, all the morning people are too damned perky for me. I don’t watch any of the morning shows. Somewhere TPTP got the idea that we viewers want to see and hear hilarity ensuing in the AM when somnolence meets wakefulness–the most tender time of the day.

Kelly does not care that Michael is leaving,
It’s been reported she can’t stand him. She
Is more upset that it’s clear ABC does not
Value her or the show. They will throw a little
More cash at her and all will be ok. They
Should hire Jerry O’Connoll. He is funny.

Who’s to say if staying at Live or moving to GMA is best for Michael? Only time will tell. As far as a replacement goes…. years ago there was a lot of talk that Jeff Gordon would take over for Regis when he retired. Of course Regis retired before Jeff was ready to climb out of the race car. Now he’s free (besides working for NASCAR on Fox much like Michael works for NFL on Fox.) I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cameron Mathison in the running. I agree with some other posters that Kelly’s husband Mark could be good.

Cameron would suck as hard as Strahan did!

Timmm…I agree. More and more, I find that Cameron dude to be VERY, VERY ANNOYING!!!!! NO, NO AND MORE NO!!!!!

Later.

Put yourself in Kelly’s place. How would you feel if you were if you found out in this manner. Remember what NBC did to Today’s Ann Curry. Network politics sound pretty brutal. I bet Regis would have stories to tell, but I don’t think it’s his style.

I don’t watch Kelly and Michael unless they are having a guest on I might want to see. I remember when Michael started Live, and it didn’t take him long before you would see him appearing as a “guest” on other ABC shows for the day. Plus he is running in ads on tv. If anything I’m surprised Kelly’s surprised…he’s obviously a man on the move. She should have seen the writing on the wall. But how ABC let her know was shabby. Not a big surprise for ABC soap viewers after AMC and OLTL. Thank goodness they’ve hung in with GH…so far.

P.S. ABC just let go Stana Katic/Beckett from Castle for “budget reasons.” Also Lanie. Apparently Stana and Nathan Fillion didn’t get along, but don’t know if this contributed to her not being resigned after 8+ (?) yrs. How can you have Castle without Beckett?

I love Stana!

@Rose – I am really hoping that you are mistaken and Stan was not let go!

I haven’t watched Live or anything but the soaps on ABC since the day it was announced that AMC & OLTL were cancelled. ABC/D let Kelly know what they think of her just like they did to us! Does ABC/D really think daytime television needs another hour of GMA? Guess they forgot what happened to that OLTL replacement called Good Afternoon America. Another blunder by ABC/D. Walt is turning over in his cyro tank!

Now I can start watching the shoe again. Strauss sucked. Kelly Ripa’s husband should co-host with her. Mark Consuelo would be great!

***Show not shoe
***Strahan not Strauss

It’s beyond ridiculous to think that you have to let ANYBODY know when you’re getting a new job.

It’s just a job. He’s moving on. He doesn’t owe anybody an explanation, not even Kelly Ripa. Geez! I’ve left jobs before without telling anyone. Who cares? It’s his business!

Completely. Agree.

I have not watched Live but a few times since Regis left. I couldn’t get into it with Kelly and MIchael, I hope they get a better replacement.

The last time I left a job, I gave two weeks notice, walked out the door, and never looked back. I can’t see any reasonable situation where 4 months could be considered “blindsiding.” That being said. I think this is all publicity — story line for the show. Good luck to the next guy though for sure…

I think the whole thing was handled poorly — Kelly should’ve been told before the big announcement — but she also needs to remember that she left AMC to do LIVE…

No she didn’t she continued to do AMC for several years until her contract expired and then I think even did guest appearances if they asked her.

Disney CEO and ABC this was really a dick move. Things are not going to be as what you think after this for GMA. Your ratings have fallen because of Robin, George and even Dr. Besser after his embarrassing outburst on air a while ago. These incidents make an impact just remember that.

It’s business….While Kelly may have been shocked she shouldn’t have been surprised. ABC was grooming him for GMA for the past two years. Anderson Cooper or Neil Patrick Harris would be ideal replacements for Strahan. After this season goes on hiatus oil fall he or his lisp won’t be missed.

IT’S BUSINESS INDEED. That’s all it is.

No employer is going to smile on her behaviour. The decision to move him was made at several levels above her chat show realm. He’s getting promoted and she’s acting a fool. No one did one thing to her. They obviously knew she was going to have a meltdown.

She’ll be lucky to have any job in six months. When the CEO of ABC sez we’re doing this , then the correct response is Congratulations.

People get promoted. It happens.

She has a year left on contract, they say. Perhaps the show will be cancelled?

Tomas…E-X-A-C-T-L-Y!!!!! Kelly should be grateful that she STILL HAS a job!!!!! Kelly needs to calm down ALREADY and realize that it is a BUSINESS!!!!! Business-wise, it is what it is. Period.

She can do that show by herself I don’t know what she’s upset about. Good riddance to what’s his name and say hello to the Kelly Show! She needs to tap into her AMC Hayley “Halo” spunk!!!

Neil Patrick Harris or Anderson Cooper!

He should have told Kelly himself as a friend & coworker… Not nice being a backstabber. She will excel & find another terrific co-host.

I look at it like this: It is a BUSINESS and N-O-T a family!!!!!

Case closed.

What is she teaching her children… You are paid very well.. So acclimate yourself to another talk partner.. He signed a contract with ABC not Kelly Ripa productions.. She should be ashamed of her actions.. Go on air.. Explain you were caught off guard.. Life goes on.. and APOLOGIZE to the viewing audience for your childish behavior

I bet when she comes back she will insist it is a misunderstanding in the media and she was simply on vacay.

Very hard to believe that Kelly had no prior knowledge. Sounds like a big stunt to me.

Diva. Get over yourself!

Please, please bring back Anderson Cooper — he and Kelly together click like crazy. Not upset that MIchael is leaving – struck me as anything but genuine. Kelly has been the constant on that show and ABC Disney should be ashamed to have treated her so shabbily. Obvious Michael is thought of more highly than she.

I love Anderson! Jeff Probst would be good to.

Neil Patrick Harris??

Life goes on

Although we all like to think our bosses and co-workers care for us and have our best interest in mind the truth is a job is a job is a job. No one should ever take anything that happens at work personally. If she was friends with him off screen then him not telling her might be issue with them privately, but as a co-worker she is not entitled to know his business. The show is ABC’s property, not Kelly’s, she is an employee, so she was informed when all the other employees were informed. Kelly just found out that she doesn’t carry the weigh she thought she had on her network, if she needs a couple of weeks to sulk, so be it, but it comes across as unprofessional and the longer she is out the more uncomfortable it will become for all those who work on that show. For their sakes I hope cooler and mature heads will prevail and she will come back to work on Monday.

I don’t think it was handled well, but don’t know if this is the best way for Kelly to handle it now. I guess it will be hard for her to sit next to Michael after this. Personally, I’d prefer him to stay on Live as I don’t like him and don’t want to see more of him on GMA. I don’t know why he was picked to co-host LIve to begin with and don’t know what GMA sees in him. I just think he’s annoying.

It is apparent that nobody here works or understands the industry yet the can go on name calling. 1) Kelly and Michael don’t work just 3 hrs a day. Obvious that person doesn’t know what goes into making a morning show. 2) Deals are made at the networks and even if someone is your friend you may not be able to mention it to them or anyone else. Because that’s just the way it is. The network breaks the news. Same goes in many regular jobs. You give your boss 2 weeks notice and they ask you not to outright go around telling people that you are leaving. So a person can be blindsided by such news when it’s kept the way it is. Doesn’t matter how much a person makes, they are still human beings and have feelings. People go about acting as if they never through a fit in their entire lives.

And hers is quite public and people here understand the mechanics of show biz and tantrums.. She acts like they up and replaced her with no warning… Which they are probably threatening if she doesn’t get over this situation..

Apparently not based on the comments. Seems like everyone is out to point a finger at someone not knowing the actual story. It’s like people read a headline and story full of “sources” say nonsense and take it as truth. One of the biggest problems in this country today. People reading things, passing them along as fact and just craving gossip. Speaking out on things they know nothing about as if they’re experts.

On that note I agree but when you have the majority of news outlets and gossip hounds reporting the exact same story real imagined or blown up.. The way people feel about the individuals involved comes out.. I’ve not wavered on my opinion of Kelly or that fluff show.. but I didn’t feel the need to make it known.. Until now.. But I also won’t pour sugar on her and pretend to like her while waiting to pounce … which people do..when she seemingly is creating a huge problem for no reason other than being in diva mode..

Sorry Magneto, but my heart fails to bleed for someone making ten million dollars a year while not working very hard for it. Yes, I am sure it’s more than three hours a day but it’s not much more. Believe it or not, I do know a little something about the industry. My heart is too busy bleeding for single mothers who cannot pay the rent or provide their children with three square meals a day. I like Kelly Ripa well enough and ABC did mishandle it, but Kelly’s behavior is unprofessional and childish.

Kelly should be pissed. She has been through this circus before and she should have been aware of the changes being made. She deserves that type of respect in her business because she earned it! I am glad Strahan is leaving. He sucked! He never added anything to the show and I never witnessed the chemistry with these two like I did with Regis and Kelly. We move forward. I pray Dana Carvey is hired as her new co-host. If he isnt interested, Anderson Cooper would be great!

Timmm…Anderson’ s great with Kelly, but I think he’d be crazy to leave CNN with all the prominence and opportunities for special reporting that he gets there.

Rose, you’ve made the point that I wish to make. Anderson Cooper is a serious news journalist. That image would forever be tarnished by a move to Live. I even think his visits to Live diminish this image.

You are right Rose. If he were a bit older maybe, like Regis, it would be the time and place! Also, so glad to here you like Charlie Rose. I start my morning off with him to see what the hell happened in the world, last might! He is smart, likable and trustworthy!

Who would ever leave CNN anchor job for LIVE with KELLY?? LOL… they would need their head examined…

I agree that Anderson is great, but it would be a demotion for him.

who knows what really happened and who cares. KR will find another job!

Regis told Hoda Kotb on the Today show that he hadn’t seen Kelly since he left the show. Thought that seemed strange since they seemed to get along so well. Maybe she & Michael aren’t really that close.

Contract negotiations or new employment deals or anything like that are strictly confidential in almost every industry. Of course, Kelly wasn’t told ahead of time. Michael surely wasn’t allowed to say anything and their bosses weren’t going to spill the beans until all the i’s were dotted and t’s were crossed. I suppose they might have told her privately very shortly before telling everyone else, but that isn’t good for “team spirit.” Sure, people are friendly at work, but business is business. And that’s the professional way to do things.

I like Kelly and think she has been a terrific cohost.
Now there in a story out that she had planned an anniversary trip with mark for this week but she has now canceled it.
I can see her taking a day off to get her mind around this, after all she has to play nice with Michael Strahan until September. I’m sure they will both have time off this summer and maybe won’t do a lot more shows together.
In any event she needs to return to work ASAP or all this will backfire on her. The world can turn quickly against you.
I thought Strahan did a nice job but he was not exceptional by any means. I would love to see Anderson cooper, Jeff Probst, Jerry Oconnel,l, Josh Groban as her next cohost.

I like Live. One of the few talk shows that I find good, mostly because it honestly seems spontaneous as compared to other talk shows. Sounds to me like Kelly was completely blindsided (again) and that ABC/Disney could have easily avoided all of these hard feelings by exercising some common sense and keeping her in the loop. Michael could have also insisted on it, as negotiations went on. But, at the end of the day, it’s just another talk show. Too many of them already that just add to the noise of our daily lives. I’m not THAT invested in what happens next…

Kelly Ripa is a spoiled rotten brat and should be the one fired. Grow up already! The show is unwatchable with it being all about her. Michael is a class act and doesn’t owe anyone anything. Good for him for moving on and getting away from me,me,me, every day.

Agree with you 100 percent. She does make the show all about her, including when guests are there. Cancel the show, already.

Shari… could not agree with you more!

Lots of drama on ABC, bring Cameron Mathison ex Ryan AMC to replace Michael.

Not a fan of Strahan. He’s overrated and ubiquitous. I don’t understand what TV execs see in him. The lack of notice given to Kelly was classless. Sure, you can blame the TV execs, but Strahan shares that blame.

Not a fan of Kelly Ripa or “Live” since Regis left. It sounds as though Michael took an opportunity that most anyone would take. Perhaps she was blindsided; but, really, c’mon-she has a very blessed life and the show will most likely go on.

Everyone is assuming Michael didn’t tell Kelly. We don’t know that 100%! She is an actress after all and she didn’t want to betray Michael ‘s trust by saying, oh yes, I know. Her fury is most likely with the higher ups who put Michael in that awkward position of keeping this new gig on the down low and not respecting her enough to tell her. I think he gave her the heads up and told her to play it her way. If not, maybe they’re not as close as they appeared on the show, they aren’t the first to fake it to make it and they won’t be the last.

Wow! I am STUNNED at the comments referring to a PERSON as a “brat,” “diva,” etc. What happened to that post a while back regarding attacking people and not characters? I guess if it is up for gossip then it is okay?

I don’t think this is right. Maybe Kelly Ripa is acting a little entitled or scorned, but being in this business for so long she is only human. I am not particularly on either side, but I find this thread to be a little hypocritical. 🙁

Carol Burnett Talks About Being a Superfan of ‘All My Children’ on ‘Live with Kelly and Mark’

In a heartfelt reunion, of sorts, the one and only Carol Burnett appeared on Monday March 25th episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.

Burnett had first met Kelly Ripa (Hayley) and Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo) back when they all appeared on All My Children together. Carol played Verla Grubbs first in 1983 and then again in the 90’s.

Host Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, AMC) noted to Burnett that “we go back a long time”. She also described Burnett’s character of Verla Grubbs, “extraordinary in every way.”

Carol’s love for All My Children is well-documented, hence legendary soap creator, Agnes Nixon, created the role of Verla for Burnett.

Photo: ABC

Speaking on how her passion for All My Children began, Carol told Kelly and Mark, “It started with my kids. They would watch at noon. I said, ‘What are you guys doing?’ I sat down and I started to watch and I got hooked!”

When Carol’s family decided to travel through Europe during one summer, the comedic legend recalled thinking, “How am I going to last if I don’t know what’s going on in Pine Valley?” She revealed she had a friend, “who sent me a telegram to the (different hotels) on Fridays to bring me up to date.”

In a hilarious moment from the segment, Carol recalled receiving a late night telegram while in Lake Cuomo when there was a knock at her hotel room door from the hotel manager who was shaking.

Carol related what it said, “Erica is still in a coma. Mark slipped again and ran away from rehab.” As Kelly and Mark broke into laughter, Burnett continued, “Chuck has learned that Donna is carrying his baby, who was once a hooker.”

Check out Carol explaining how she became an AMC Superfan below.

Now, let us know, did you enjoy Carol as Verla Grubbs? What show do you consider yourself a Superfan of? Tell us in the comment section.

Malachy McCourt, ‘Ryan’s Hope’ and ‘All My Children’ Actor, Dead at 92

If you watched Ryan’s Hope through its 14-year-run, you know that Kevin the bartender became a beloved “member’ of the Ryan clan on the defunct ABC daytime drama series. The character of Kevin MacGuiness became so loved by the fans because of the actor who portrayed him, Malachy McCourt.

Sadly, according to his wife Diana McCourt to The New York Times, Malachy passed away on Monday from a heart condition and battling cancer. The actor was 92-years-old.

Playing Kevin on Ryan’s Hope was not much of a stretch for McCourt, because in his lifetime, he was the owner of 1950s Irish pub Malachy’s on Third Avenue in Manhattan. Known as one of the city’s great story-tellers, patrons from longshoremen to the actor Richard Harris would stop in and talk all things Irish with . On Ryan’s Hope, Kevin was best friends to “Ryan’s Bar” owner, Johnny Ryan (Bernie Barrow) and he tried to keep Delia (Ilene Kristen) on the straight and narrow.

In his soap opera career, McCourt also was widely-known for his role of Father Clarence McCourt on All My Children especially come Christmastime. Was Clarence, actually St. Nick? That was always the proverbial question. McCourt also appeared on the New York soaps: One Life To Live, Search For Tomorrow and Another World. Other roles included: Devil’s Own, Brewster’s Millions, The Molly Maguires, and Starman, to name

Later in 2006, Malachy ran for governor of the state of New York as a Green Party candidate. He tackled social issues of the time including being an advocate for gay and lesbian groups to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Photo: ABC

McCourt’s childhood was recounted within his brother Frank McCourt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes, which detailed their mother’s attempt to raise the four of their surviving seven children in poverty in Limerick, Ireland. Later, Malachy wrote his own memoirs: 1998’s Monk Swimming, and 2000’s Singing My Him Song.

Malachy is survived by his aforementioned wife, Diana, daughter Siobhan McCourt; sons Malachy Jr., Conor and Cormac; stepdaughter Nina Galin; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Share you remembrances and condolences for Malachy McCourt via the comment section, but first check out this scene from a 1983 episode of “Ryan’s Hope” featuring the late actor with Ilene Kristen.
