Matthew Ashford Returns For A Short Stint To Days of our Lives!

Here’s a very welcome surprise!  While DAYS executive Ken Corday told soap press that he would not have more returns-from-the-dead in the imminent future, news from TV Insider on Monday has that none other than the beloved Matthew Ashford is returning to the NBC soap opera as Jack Deveraux!

As fans of the series know, Jack perished in an elevator shaft/crash saving his daughter Abigail (Kate Mansi). However in his upcoming return, as of now, Matthew is slated to appear in a five episode arc.   Ashford begins taping this week at the NBC set of Days of our Lives.

Since DAYS tapes so far in advance, the audience will not see how Jack’s return plays itself out till the spring of 2016.

So, will Jack come back as a vision and a ghost to tie up his love story with Jennifer?  Is Jack actually alive? Could fan response bring back Ashford even for more episodes next year?  Share your thoughts on the return of Matt Ashford to DAYS in the comment section below!

Ugh! I know I’m in the minority but I can’t stand Jack. He became so silly over the years & the way he ran out on his family was inexcusable. I hope his stay is really short & he remains dead.

He ‘ran out of his family’ because Days’ writers wrote him off and the actor was let go.

Whoops, should be ‘on’ not ‘of’.

Yes you probably are in the minority. But I am sure that there are characters that I can’t stand but others love.

I am in your minority, but I think that is because the writers messed his character up too much.

I have NEVER liked Jack. So glad it is only for a short time!

YES!!! So glad Jack is back! I hope this return becomes permanent. Killing off Jack was the biggest mistake of the TomSell regime, and they made a ton of a mistakes, so that’s saying something.

Fan reaction to this news has been off the charts with joy. Matt started off recurring in 2001 but quickly earned a contract a few months later. Let’s hope history repeats itself!

Meanwhile, a big pat on the back to my fellow Jack fans who have been campaigning for this return for MONTHS, despite Corday’s refusal to bring him back. This is amazing news, and we need to take a moment and celebrate.

Looking forward to Spring 2016 when I start watching Days again!

Agreed it was worse decision to kill him off! If this is not permanent or long term, I wish GH would bring him back as Tom. Not because I liked that character so much but because 1) I miss Ashford in daytime & 2) Hardy presence is almost non existent on GH now.

He”s a fine actor and appears to be a fine man.

@alistaircrane – Matthew is coming back only for a five episode arc.

I disagree that that was their worst decision. In fact, it might have been a blessing. At least they treated the dead with respect. Based on how they treated the other DAYS men, I really don’t want to even THINK about how badly TomSell would’ve mangled Jack if they’d kept him around!

Put me down as someone who was disappointed when they killed off Jack. I never believed he was dead even after Jennifer got the news. They can make an exception and bring Jack back to us permanently. Jennifer needs him and so do Abigail and JJ.

I don’t like that it’s a short stint and this leads me to believe Jack is still dead. 🙁

Was bummed Ashford was written off the Salem canvas but I hope this is a vision from beyond offering guidance or closure. I am not fond of resurrections. GH has burned me on those!

He will probably be an apparition, as seems to be the theme. And, speaking of the supernatural, I wish Carolina would see the possible fatal predicament in which Abby finds herself. Ben plans to kill her and run with the three-month old baby.

The baby is three months old? I thought the baby was about six months old. lol

HaHa….that’s so funny, Lou…..and probably more accurate.

hmmm – interesting you would say that because i thought the same thing when will was being brutally killed…………..she never saw that either

I think Jack coming back is because something awful will happen to Abby’s baby and herself and she is slated to leave the show so maybe her dad comes for the sendoff…. unless they recast??

Correction; Caroline

He can come back…it can easily be explain that many past Jacks were all imposters, including when MV played the role…Jennifer is more interesting and even likeable when he is around…build Jack and Jen as the next Alice and Tom…it can be done!…PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! or ill stop eating CHEESE!…lol

Agree Jennifer is best with him.

I so agree with you. The only time I even like Jennifer is when Jack is around. I usually fast forward through her scenes.

Bring back Jack for good! Too bad we have to wait soooo long!

Ghost.

Why taunt us with this stuff?

I guess you don’t like the idea of Ghost Jack. There’s a chance he’ll just be Jack and those five episodes can turn into something substantial.

Why jump to conclusions and create a questionable username?

Below you i had written IMPOSTER…these are occasional visitors to this site just to start an argument with posters…dont fall for usernames unfamiliar to you when they make these idiotic comments!…then they will disappear!

I will never understand how some idiot will post under such a disgusting moniker and get through; when over at GH , perfectly, clean posts, which may get on the moderators nerves, get kicked in the butt and not appear on the board. Go figure!
How did this one get past you, moderators?

IMPOSTER!

I’m torn. I really like the actor and always enjoyed his portrayal of Jack D, but sometimes it is best to let dead characters remain dead even as a ghost. The latest example is the ghost of Bo. Now instead of my last memories of Bo being his dying in the arms of his beloved Fancy Face, they will of this lame soap ghost egging Hope to seek revenge.

Likewise with Jack, his giving his life to save Abigail was a touching way to end the character, so why would I want or need to see his ghost now and if not a ghost, if he is alive why bring the character back for a short time, then what? Kill him off again, have him disappear again. And that is why I am torn, like to see Jack back if were for the long term, but for the short stint, not sure if I am for it.

I’m glad someone posted as such….

“…Now instead of my last memories of Bo being his dying in the arms of his beloved Fancy Face, they will of this lame soap ghost egging Hope to seek revenge. ”

I know, right ?

why ruin the everlasting love and appeal this supercouple reigned ?

as i’ve posted prior… how can she – the character, of Hope – get over so quickly two men she loved…

that’s where I wanted it to go; a realistic portrait of a widowed heroine…

next thing you know she’ll enlist the help of Rafe… and he’ll be the one to exact “revenge” and come out the hero… and hunky dory…. a new couple

This Bo is SOOOOOOOO not a ghost. He’s another one of Hope’s hallucinations. Bo entire life’s goal was to PROTECT Hope from danger and PREVENT her from going after the bad guys. Alive or dead, there’s no way he’d be encouraging her to do this. Now, Hope’s OWN subconscious, on the other hand…that’s a different story 😉 I can completely believe she conjured him up as a coping mechanism and is sending herself off on a revenge mission.

Well whether a ghost or hallucination the point is still the same, sometimes writers give us these beautiful death scenes and then ruin it when the character comes back in some form soon after so my last memory of that character will be something less impressive than the beautiful death scene. But logically your reasoning is sound that this Bo is Hope’s grief filled mind fueling her quest, but still wish PR last scenes were the ones of him dying in the park instead of these after death appearances.

Perhaps she’s dreaming? Lol.
Great post, Geobear.

I agree, Geobear.

Hope also feels guilty for not looking for and giving up on Bo.

Matthew, how about returning to GH as Tom Hardy next?

No no no, I hated him as Tom Hardy. He was miscast and horrible in the role. He is wonderful as Jack on Days.

I agree Helen. Tom Hardy was a horrible dull character and Matt needs more to chew on that that drab.

Maybe now with different writers and all the time off canvas, he as Tom would be better this go around. I miss Hardy presence on GH & want Matthew back on daytime. 🙁

I agree!! GH needs Hardy presence again & daytime could use Matthew!!

I will want Matt back wherever he is. So sad they killed him off anyway-YES back as Tom Hardy (Part of GH legacy) would be AMAZING.

I love Matt and Jack but why only 5 episodes? What are they going to do with poor Jenn? I assumed maybe she would be with Eric but then saw that Greg is leaving too. I am so confused!

Ha, me too! Poor Jen walks around doing nothing and worrying about her kids all day.

Melissa Reeves is the one who “needs to go”

poor judgment and choices behind the scenes @Days

So excited to see Jack again…fingers crossed he stays

Five DAYS and then they decide he stays…4ever!

Shows really need to think twice (or more) before killing off popular characters.

Sweet lord, stop bringing back characters that are written out. So pathetic. Poor writing is showing big time. If DAYS fans haven’t learned their lesson with Bo Brady’s short lived return, then they are in need of some therapy, perhaps from Marlena. Let the dead lie!

Give the fans what they want NBC — make Jack’s stint longer. He’s an obvious fan favorite!! With Steve back – he needs another brother now that Bo is gone.

wouldn’t that be something… if they really need to beef up a family… let it be from a strong “family” of actors

Jack Deveraux
Steve Johnson
Adrienne Johnson Kiriakis

altho, if Jack was to return… he should be on his own sans Melissa Reeves… she’s deadweight and oh so tiring

I agree, Patrick. Miss Jenny gets to me, too. And, I will say this, knowing everyone will rebel against me; I do not like Hope. She gets on my last nerve. I have kept this secret for years. Well, now I have just blurted it out. What a relief….feels so good, so cleansing…lol.

Steve has not signed a contract…. Daniel is going and now Eric….seems pretty dull to me…if Abby leaves there’s really no great couple…I thought it would be Chad and Abby…

What’s the point of bringing him back if it’s only for five days? can the show not afford to keep veterans on? Jack should be back for good, but writers don’t seem smart enough to know how to write for him.

Well, it’s about time! Glad DAYS came to their senses and invited Matt back to the show. Like Ces said, Steve needs his brother! And Jen needs Jack. All her other pairings have been lackluster. And, if Abby marries Chad, she’s gonna need someone to walk her down the aisle! Wouldn’t THAT be a crowdpleaser! 🙂

if he’s not a permanent fixture… then… I hope he’s back to usher Melissa Reeves’ OUT

Abs and JJ are fine on their own… I think they should bring back Jamie Lyn Bauer

and let Jennifer and Jack ride off in to the sunset… give this couple a happy ending… and fans of this show a rest

Melissa Reeves salary should go to an actor who – can – act

SIDEBAR: STAT

Thanksgiving ep in Salem!

this trio knocks – me – OUT

Justin, Eve, and Eduardo

as played by ; at the top of their game; ON

Wally Kurth
Kassie DePaiva
A. Martinez

talk about raw in your face talent

DAYS needs nuMagic to unfold… to draw and add layers without all the history…

Justin and Eve belong in Salem

Well, they’re throwing us Jack fans a bone once again with no long-term stint. Just don’t get it. There has always been an abundance of story potential but the character is always shafted (pardon the pun).

This week, DAYS head scribe, Ron Carlivati, confirmed that, and told Michael Fairman TV on the decision of the scripts the team submitted: “I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, and then there was Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s (Louise Sorel) crashing the reading of the will.”
