RATINGS: All Soaps Down in Total Viewers!

The ratings are out for the week of March 5- 9th and all four of the remaining network soaps, showed a loss in total viewers!

While The Young and the Restless remained at number one with 4,275,000 and a loss of -78,000 viewers for the week, The Bold and the Beautiful remained at number two with 3,063,00 viewers with a loss of  -36,000, Days of our Lives remaining at number three with 2,249,000 with a loss of -119,000 and General Hospital in fourth with 2,344,000 with a loss of -59,000,  we can’t help but wonder, what is going on?

What is concerning is that GH had a slight decline fromthe previous week when it was on the upswing for the ratings period report, and was ushering in more big returns, OLTL’s favorites, and continuing to play out Robin’s exit story.  Is it a case of a failed reporting rating system glitches?  Fans not-on-board yet? As for DAYS, Y&R and B&B, what do you think they need to do to encourage you to watch more frequently?

You can check out the entire ratings courtesy of Soap Opera Network here, and also read an interesting item about a snafu that occurred with General Hospital’s DVR descriptions for for the March 2nd episode, that could have confused viewers, and makes you wonder if it could happen again, and if it really had any impact on the outcome of the ratings.

it was just one of those weeks…the good news is GH was tied for #2 in key 18-49 demo for the first time in awhile. Also, GH had 2.6M viewers last Monday (compared to the revolutions 1.4M), a number they haven’t seen in a long time as well. I’m hoping next week’s will be better for the Sonny/Todd showdown and Robin’s funeral. We’ll see.

I hope you are right ,because I am getting nervous, now is not the time for the ratings to go down .

While so much of GH has gotten better, there are alot of flaws still.
Robins death was ridiculously done. Ridiculous.
Her father is told a lie by Luke and leaves town. BIG MISTAKE.
Then he sends a letter?

We were introduced to new people from OLTL while we should have been concentrating on Robin. LOVE Todd & Blair, but Robin should have been dealt
with properly first.
Even the funeral. Half a church? Where were all the people? She was a genious in her area of study as a Dr, and half a Church? Reception at the hospitals rooftop? Who does that? Couldn’t GH pay people to go to the funeral for one day? Instead we will see extras on a roof top?
I will say KUDOS to the flashbacks. Genious and appreciated.

Who wants to listen to Sam another minute? She sure grew a belly in a week.
Who wants to see Sam & Ewan in a ‘chemistry’ test in the shower?
It took Carly the entire hour to tell Jason about Robin.
Why were they switching to Skate? B O R I N G and it wasn’t the time to have separate scenes of them.

Felicia is coming back. Scottie isn’t. How long will Felicia be back? A week?

While I find the writing better, take into consideration the weather this week in the midwest & eastcoast. 70′ & 80’s. Apparently people rather be outside.

Agree, the Scorpio story was terrible and a wasted golden opportunity.

Dont think its a coincidence that the day Tristan Rogers returns, 2/29 the ratings were a 2.0 (highest in months). They stayed strong for the remaining days of his run. The day after he left after a total character destruction the ratings were a 1.7.

Perfect words ” a wasted opportunity’ (Scorpio)
I think it made less sense to even bring him back than to have him skip out of his daughters wedding!
btw….this week is spring break, not last week or the week before. Don’t expect ratings to gain in the near future. Which is too bad. Time is coming to an end.

I would watch all the soaps if they werent all on at the same time ,at least they are here in florida, general hospital is ok where it is ,I watch days of our lives the other two are one when thats on. I dont trust the ratings ,On march 2nd I heard that every one who taped gh there dvrs didnt tape ,its a mystery and there is still no answers, could that mean the ratings are not fair and the networks can fix them so they can lie, however I will make a wild guess alot of the one life to live fans heard that our favorite family the mannings will come to port charles then leave in a week thats disappointing ,I keep up with all the soap news Im all over the net but there are people out there that ask dumb questions and I have to wonder why they dont know whats going on in the soapbubble world.I also believe that abc/disney should come out once and for all and say general hospital is canceled or not.sometimes people dont want to invest in something only to have it taken away and the rat channel is playing games with us soap fans .All I know is if the networks can screw with the ratings which I am believing they do ,Ive said this all along ,then there programming is not worth investing in .All I know is that I will have lost 3 soaps that I cared about and now they are gone because the big wigs over at abc/disney didnt have enough money lining there pockets ,those 3 hours a day were precious to me and I will never get it back.so you bet I will continue to boycott all abc/disney and Im never looking back.

Last week was Spring Break for many. Could be the reason why. Hard to watch a soap laying on the beach!

I agree, but I think Spring break is next week. Oh Oh!

Yes, spring break will cover a couple of weeks. I just got back from a 2 week trip to Florida, and I was only able to catch 1 episode of Days and GH each. And, the GH episode was pre-empted around 3:30 due to the killing of an area police officer (definately good cause for pre-emption). Anyway, I suspect ratings will improve slightly as things get back to normal. Easter/Passover will be another downer as many religious schools close for the entire week and families head out for vacation. I agree with Barbara, I wish some soaps would not overlap (2:00 is hideous void in daytime TV) and I could watch them all.

I really think that something is off with the ratings for DVR’s and website watchers. Maybe even soapnet viewers. I believe that a lot of people record the soaps and watch them either pager that night or as a marathon on the weekend when they don’t have to wait until tomorrow to watch what comes next. I have friends that no longer watch prime time shows during the regular seas on of their run ap that there is instant gratification with the storyline. Many friends who never watched Lost or Heroes or Glee during the season but waited for the season to be released to watch it all at one time. Many of these people watch their soaps during the weekend. How is this accounted for?

I tape GH every day because I have to work. I put it on during the day on Saturday and let it run all day. I hate sport’s and this make’s my Saturday TV viewing great. The commercial’s run too. I don’t have time to run for my remote just because a commercial come’s on and I appreciate the fact they sponser the show I love to watch

I came back hoping to see a strong Scorpio family at least for a bit before KMc left. What did I get? Maybe 6 minutes of my fav mother/daughter duo, a father who turned into a podperson and left to find a son that isn’t his with a woman who lied about it. WTF?!! This is not what a lot of people were hoping for. We were hoping that RnA were going to come to PC to spend a bit of time with their daughter before she left and maybe have them stay behind to clean the mob out of PC. or something to that affect. Disappointed but will continue to watch Anna and the Drakes.

I miss OLTL something terrible! I have tried to watch the other shows, but I do not have a strong enough history behind them to get me interested.. Other soap fans that I talk to are just scared to get into another soap, just to have it cancelled as well. Its just a matter of time, and i do not want to e experience the loss of another soap again. Money/ profit=end game not viewers.

Some of us are still boycotting abcd channel. I won’t return until our beloved ONE LIFE TO LIVE either returns or the OLTL stories and characters are ALL moved to GH. That’s just me. I know there are varying opinions out there, and I respect them, as those who disagree with mine should respect mine. Long live ONE LIFE TO LIVE. I’ll never forget.

DAYS has been more interesting than in the past, but geez, those sets are awfully distracting! How many times does Stefano’s front door show up in different locations? Come on guys, I know budgets are tight, but visit a goodwill or habitat store and switch it up some! Also, sometimes it’s hard for me to watch DAYS, especially when I’m irritated that we live in a world where shows like GH and DAYS are saved, while gems like ONE LIFE TO LIVE are kicked to the curb.

I refuse to watch B&B. It’s just too sleazy and incestuous for my tastes. Heather Tom’s talents would be much better served by returning to Y&R and the role of Victoria, who has been all too softened since the current actress, although talented, took over, which brings me to…..

Y&R, the crown jewel of daytime. What to say, except MAB really knows how to ruin a soap (this from someone who has watched the show since the late 70’s). I couldn’t give a flip about mobsters and their daughters, crazy Daisy, Tucker McCall (they should have left Jill as Katherine’s daughter….worst mistake of the decade), Harmony, Devon, Sophia, et al. Y&R was on a good run up until 2006, and it’s been downhill since, first with LML’s re-envisioning of something that was already close to perfection and second with MAB recklessly undoing pretty much everything from the past 10 years. MAB also seems to think her “vision” for Y&R is inspired by the late, great Bill Bell; but Bill Bell’s Y&R had structure that was character driven and progressed logically, while MAB’s Y&R is a meandering, confusing, over-populated, plot-driven hot mess. It’s such a shame because it was so unnecessary.

I am so with you on OLTL. I miss it; I’ll never forget; it will always be in my heart. I don’t watch ABC (except GH).

Oh my God, me too. Every single day I miss OLTL. I am clinging to GH & watch all the rest, Y&R, B&B & Days & I really love them all because I just plain love soaps but listen, all of these together DO NOT HOLD A CANDLE TO OLTL-they just DO NOT. Damn it, it was so good-now I went back & forth over the decades from CBS to ABC-I cannot say I’ve seen every episode of OLTL. I went to CBS in the ’90s although thru Soap Opera Digest I kept up with all the ABC & NBC shows. But I got re-hooked on OLTL the summer that Natalie & Seth came to town (incidentally because of SoapNet), I caught an ep. of OLTL at 8 a.m. accidentally one morning & the rest is history-I was back in the Llanview fold & remained there til the end. I WANT MY SHOW BACK.

Yes I miss OLTL so much!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a quality show………..Where OLTL differs from GH is: OLTL charcters were like a close knit family … They CARED for one another deeply.. You could see this in every episode you watched…OLTL was a CLASS ACT….It was heart-warming.. GH should develop some of these qualities…Don’t feel the closeness in GH like I felt in OLTL… If GH had these qualities , the ratings would sky rocket… I want the soaps to continue on daytime!!!!!!!! What is it with everyone ???? Why are they losing interest??????? I still like my stories after all these years… This is just my opinion.. Why would you watch reality/info/talk /cooking shows over the soaps?? That doesn’t make sense to me…I will watch my stories over that crap anyday… I want OLTL back also!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But it isn’t going to happen..I felt the closenes on GH when there was Lucille, Audry, Dr. Hardy, Luke & Laura,Anna & Robert, Shawn Doneely. They should get back to the good old days of GH….Then, I think the ratings would do well all the time like they did years ago….Gh needs that togetherness…. Than it would have a very good chance with the ratings…

Jared, OMG, I miss OLTL terribly, as well as the other family centered dramas, As the World Turns and Guiding Light. I am trying very hard to watch Y & R, it is a ridiculous mess as you said. I find myself changing the channel at Days at 1:00. The worst time of day is 2-3 pm, where OLTL used to be. I make sure I’m in the room so that the channel is definately NOT on ABC or CBS.

We have 2 weeks for magical changes to happen to keep GH on the air. I don’t see it happening. OLTL is over. Soon GH will be to.

For me, I am trying to rekindle my GH love. It is difficult to give a new soap a try as I did with DAYS. I have followed Y&R and B&B but here we have the most successful soaps, yet for me they are the least satisfying in story. I guess it is my problem but the soaps to which I was faithful… ATWT, OLTL, and AMC are the ones the powers opted to cancel.

I think the soaps need to step up their writing and churn out some good stories that relate to what’s going on now. Maybe check out the headlines look at Criminal Minds and get ideas . Soaps were good back in the 80’s and 90’s because of the adventure and romance with he hidden dangers lurking, now he soaps are pretty boring and I hate saying that because I am the biggest soap fan.we also have the Internet to blame because the kids of today are constantly on their iPads iPods and playing video games and everyone is working now during the times they are on and I’m not sure if taping them is showing in the ratings versus watching them live.

I can think of at least 2 thingd that would make ALL ratings go down… Spring Breaks AND the basketball stuff… we had at least 2 TVs on at work for the basketball games, people were gathered around there for some time – and it was the soap time! dang! why can’t they turn on soaps for a change at work instead of news! te he he

Young and the Resteless Needs a Creative Writing Staff.
MAB &C. SUCKS they are not giving balance to the show
it is all one-sided. That needs to be fixed if that show is to survive.
CBS and SonyPictures step in and do something!

What really shocked me was The Chew having more viewers than GH (2,489,000 compared to 2,403,000) for the week of February 27-March 2. The Chew numbers will embolden ABC to cancel GH. ABC could replace GH with a game show. The Price is Right has 4-5 million viewers. All of these numbers are better than the canceled Rosie O’Donnell Talk Show on OWN, which was only averaging 190,000 viewers.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/own-cancels-rosie-o-donnell-301270

It isn’t that people do not like soaps. They like them in primetime. The soaps still have more viewers than some primetime shows on cable. Are all the daytime soap viewers who watch in the evenings or on the weekends being counted or don’t they matter? There is an audience for soaps but maybe daytime broadcasting isn’t when the most people could watch.

Im really really disgusted that any loyal soap fan would give the Spew the time of day.

In several areas soaps were pre-empted for basketball towards the end of last week for some ridiculous reason. I am sure that won’t help the next set of ratings either.

I also heard MORE people again have had problems with their DVRs not recording during the week of March 5th.

The weather has been beautiful here in OHIO and many of us Buckeyes have been outside. Just cancel the Revulsion and move GH to 2 pm. Enough already.

I agree !!!!!!! CANCEL THE REVOLUTION ASAP!!!!!!!!!!! Yes and put GH in it’s time slot….What are they waiting for???????????????Get this CRAP off daytime!!!!!!!!!!

I’m surprised to see that Days went down, their stories have picked up recently and have gotten more interesting.

I recently just started watching Days after OLTL was killed, and I like the Brady-Madison-Ian storyline. I can’t believe Madison isn’t smart and strong enough to tell Brady that Ian threatened him. Brady should be able to figure out that Madison feels forced to deny her feelings to protect him.

Yeah I don’t get that either. Hopefully before it’s too late and Brady goes to someone else they can work together to take Ian down themselves!

I truly feel the rating system is to blame. I wish Canadian views could also be counted.

My Summary of the week:
sonya said…
Karen what does Exequias a Amicus mean? 🙂 And yeah Jason reading a gun magazine hahahaha! Where did he get that? 🙂
***********
It was laying on top of his black t-shirt in the closet. lol

Patrick & Anna held the show Thursday & Friday. There acting was so believable and heart wrenching. KUDOS to BOTH.
KUDOS to showing Robin’s life growing up on GH. We all got to see alot of our favorites who alot of people don’t know, yet they were the heart & sole of GH at a time. That is all the good I saw last week.

Empty Church. Sad. Pitiful and unbelievable. Someone like Robin should have had a funeral that was standing room only. Instead we see noone, not even her FATHER!! SHAME GH writers! Now what?? a tacky rooftop party at GH where they can show people as ‘fill in’s? IS the budget that bad Ron & Frank?
SHAME on you.

Ron writes split personalities. As long as there will be a GH to watch there will be a DID story.
However, and I happen to think Kate is a fantastic actress, we saw way too much of that story.

The BAD. Monica. SHAME. How far up Sam’s azz is her nose?? I thought Monica was a stronger women.
Sam is so out of line. I understood her motives in the beginning, but that dam bytch don’t want to share Jason with anyone!! If she didn’t want Jason to go to the funeral, why didnt she go in honor of what Robin did for Jason?

Emma adorable drawing photos. Typical for a child her age.

HERO of the week, finally once again I see her coming back to us would be Carly. The horndog slut in her is leaving and the women who stands up for right & wrong is on her way back.

Disapointed the ratings weren’t better. Here in the midwest its been in the 80’s outside, and don’t forget, spring break is going on. Though I thought it was next week??

GH has gotten better. No doubt. But the errors they made with Robins death were just plain stupid.

I agree.. There weren’t many people in the church… You could count them on your fingers..Pretty PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!

GH has become soooo good lately!! Thank you so much RC and FV, and thank you for removing that dreadful opening music!! LOVE the Mannings and CAN’T WAIT to see them again. Have not been this into GH since grade school in the late 70’s. But loss of viewers may be due to all the people telling others that soaps are unpopular or maybe they think watching and getting hooked will only be painful when ABC cancels the soap at it’s zenith, like they did to OLTL. Or maybe there are so many complainers out there, that execs think replacing them w/ cheap crap programming is the only way to go. Personally, I love soaps, even when I don’t like all the characters, or all the storylines. (Most of the time I do though… ) Soaps are to appreciated – story telling in a 5hr/week format – that is quick and sometimes borders on the unbelievable. Fans should know this, stop complaining and appreciate the show and the genre while we still have it!! General Hospital is on fire. Robin will be missed, but welcome to the new fresh blood!
P.S. Roger Howarth is always worth watching, it is such a gift he will be back on GH. Grazie! So excited!!

Gh has gotten better.. The writers need to do even better!!!!!!!!!!!

Despite the fact that GH was down a little from the week before, it still managed to gain a whopping 940,000 viewers from its Revulsion lead-in. Thanks to Cartini, the show is finding its heart and soul again (Robin’s funeral was very moving). It hasn’t been this good since the 90s. Fans need to keep spreading the word that the old GH is beginning to re-emerge, and it’s only going to get better. Hopefully, ABC will soon ditch the Revulsion and move GH into the 2PM EST slot (there’s an interesting item at SON re: the possibility of this happening). Fingers crossed.

Concerning GH Robin’s funeral was awful none of her co workers there? And when did hit-man Jason become so fragile and who stands in the men’s locker room with someone you don’t know and he is in a towel and blah-blah-blah about Carly wanting to sleep with your husband. Sam could not even attend the funeral to honor the woman who saved your husband’ life. Disgusting! B&B teenyboppers killing it, Y&R does not even come close to the show it once was. You want the soaps to survive get writers to WRITE or they are all gone.

All of what you said on GH, and what physician would expose himself to a woman in a hospital locker room? He would be fired. This psychiatrist Dr Keenan is a narcissistic exhibitionist and he’s going to treat patients for mental disorders?

don’t care for Sam……

Like her years ago when she was with caleb(M. Easton)

Just so everyone will know when I make comments about the characters on the shows it is always about the characters not the actors. I do live in realville not reelville! I know the actors must roll their eyes too at some of this stuff but if they are truly sincere about saving the last 4 they need to really do their research etc the way the character of Sam has acted just is not realistic at all.

Disney announces an expected loss of $200 million on its new film John Carter. That would have been enough money to keep both GH and OLTL going for 2 years or one soap for 4 years. This company can waste millions on a film, but can’t support dearly loved soaps. Crash and burn, Disney, and take all your executives and shareholders with you.

So true, so true!! Saw a promo for a new comedy “Apt 23” or something like that. It looks dumb, stupid obvious and therefore not funny raunchy jokes, another flop.

It floors me that GH is at the bottom! The acting, production value, and stories are superb!
