The ratings are out for the week of July 4th- July 8th and two shows did not fare well, while two had an uptick.  First, Days of our Lives continued to struggle.

The series hit an all-time low in total viewers and total households with 2,045,000 average tune-in for the week, and 1.53/5 share, respectively.  DAYS previous total viewer low was in the middle of June, and they have continued to hit lows in households for the seventh week in a row.  ABC’s General Hospital though was the soap that took the biggest dip for the week overall.   GH lost -170,000 total viewers and its weekly average was at the tally of 2,587,000.

The series also lost the most viewers for the week in the key 18-49 womens demo, and tied a low in the women rating share in the 18-34 category.  In addition, GH lost the most viewers of the four soaps in the 25-54 womens demo for the week in question.

However, it was good news for the CBS Daytime dramas of The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless.  Both soaps gained in total viewers with B&B rebounding and adding +141,000, while Y&R added + 94,00o.

Although it needs to be said that Y&R is off the pace of last year at this time by -258,000, and B&B continued tying a low in the 18-34 ratings share.   On the flipside, both shows showed gains in women 25-54, while B&B was the only soap to gain viewers for the week in the 18-34 demo, and Y&R the only soap to add viewers in the 18-49 category.   To view the entire ratings picture via SON click here.

Numbers are based on Live+Same Day ratings

(Compared to Last Week/Compared to Last Year)

Total Viewers
1. Y&R 4,666,000 (+94,000/-258,000)
2. B&B 3,756,000 (+141,000/+62,000)
3. GH 2,587,000 (-170,000/-136,000)
4. DAYS 2,045,000 (-49,000/-299,000)

So, what do you think of the ratings performance of your favorite soap? If you put on your armchair quarterback soap opera executive programming hat, what changes would you make to improve viewership? What would you keep that is working? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

DAYS is struggling, but B&B wasn’t the only soap to gain in 18-34. DAYS gained 3,000.

Days stories are too focused on killing, harming someone or kidnapping…this week the baby is kidnapped and Rafe is tied up in that cellar…there is no romantic moments, and no moments of just having some fun…looks like Teressa will be killed off if rumour is true…there is too much gloom and doom in the real world and we need escapism-Days isn’t delivering-none of the soaps really are but Days is the worse of them…yeah, you got to have a little violence and a tragic moment but this serial is on overload…i now only watch once a week…i really don’t want to give up on it but if there arent drastic changes soon my hour glass will run out of sand completely!!!-ill give it til Christmas but if there are no improvements my Days are over!!!

Stick a fork in “Days”

It’s DONE. Should have been cancelled a good ten years ago. Actually should have kept “Another World” and cancelled “Days” back in 1999.

Agree..This show needs a total reboot..By reboot I mean, not the cast, but the PTB..I have stop tuning in full time since last November..I will watch once or every 2 weeks and the show is depressing and all the good character have been either killed or written off in the worst way…I just shake my head in disbelief, how this show was so great just 2 years ago!!

A head writer like Ron Carlivati will jump start this show..I know he can get cartoonish and over the top, but his stories do entertain..He can get this show out of gloom and doom city!!

Days is done. it’s been dismantled by hacks and Corday doesn’t seem to care

Days deserves the all time low ratings. The rate it’s going it won’t be renewed in six months.

My concern for Days is that even if they did the unlikely smart thing of bringing Chandler Massey back, I know deep in my guts that they simply would waste his talent and our time on inane drivel storylines. Days seems to take great arrogant pride in ignoring the plethora of interesting and meaningful storylines nearly shouting in their face demanding attention.

Maybe Robb Derringer joining DAYS will help things especially if his character is for Hope.

I’m not sure he’s been hired, but his latest three followings on Twitter are Kristian Alfonso, Days of our Lives and Soap Opera Digest.

I agree there needs to be something that works!
Aiden and Andrea need to get out of the picture. Andrea has his fingers in Abigail’s missing, he made a shady deal with Kate. Kate needs to go to jail! Why did Deimose let
Her get away with his almost murder! I use to like her
But she is a liar and only is out for herself.
As far as Teresa…I don’t blame her for being upset
But she needs to partner with Brady. Summer no longer
Has the child Tate. So what’s next. Find her and
Expose her. I was getting bored with the show and
Was going to quit watching but it did get interesting
But don’t let it drag on and on! As far as Chad and Jennifer
Go….neither are fit to have Thomas but I’m not sure who is.
Just don’t let cirra and Chad get together, that is sooo
Wrong!!

GH is taking its biggest ratings hits consistently in 18-34 female viewers. Even though other categories have gone up and down, this one has recorded losses four out of the past five weeks and tied key demo lows for shares two out of the past three weeks. Ironically, the episode which had St. Sonny saving Alexis, taking the rap for Alexis stabbing Julian, paying for the town’s fireworks, solving a mystery in the kidney story and buying Lante’s new house scored the lowest ratings for the entire year so far.

I’ve been trying to keep things light

LOL

however… it occurred to me …. Sonny is EVERY WHERE on canvas… plot lines he doesn’t need to be in or should be in ? especially with Anna ! dagnabit… what’s the point ?

WE ALL know… the show is all about Sonny and sigh! Carly

yike

as on DAYS: it was all about Dr. Daniel Jonas… he killed the show

too much Sonny … of a good thing ? ! ? !

I love how… he constantly will “share” in all his interviews when pressing

HAS TO bring up … ” all the haters” LOL ( of his character and mob )

ease on down the road… it’s your show MB

I just never thought… that GH in it’s hurrah… would feature mob this much

TMS – Too Much Sonny – exactly what almost killed GH in 2011.

when GH was hitting highs they backburned the mob,i can’t believe they’ve gone back to this. so sick of the Sonny show

Thanks for your comments!!! The decision to recenter GH on Sonny especially as the heroic mobster was made several months ago. Probably not by the writers. Probably by FV and signed off by ABC. The ratings are so bad now especially in the demo age groups. Guessing that TPTB might have a change of heart?

I LOOOOVE Sonny and the Mob. KEEP it up GH. LOVE the stories going on right now and I can’t get enough of the Mob and Sonny.

The show has been unwatchable for 3 days. first time I have ffwed through in a long time. Nina, Sabrina, Valerie, Claudette, Nathan, fake Maxie, Griffin *dullsville* Munroe, Aaron, Darby, Amy, Lulu …. They can all go!

What’s the common theme here? These were all newbies created by RC/FV and FV/Jelly. No one cares about most of them. Nina is a character who’s a major bust along with hayden, Nathan and franco (though RoHo is popular but Franco…no) And selling Darby as a major spoiler just shows how out of touch TPTB are with their viewers. When I see spoilers about hayden and Naomi, seriously who gives a fuck?

Agreed Marzy. FV’s favorites. Most of us don’t care. Pretty sure most of us would love to see more Tracy, More Genie, More Jon Lindstrom, More Kin Shriner … for 3 days, we’ve seen fake Maxie, and the rest of em that I don’t care about.
The character Nina has never worked from day 1. Still not working. Agreed.
Too bad RoHo didn’t stay Todd because Franco is not exactly a character anyone should be fawning after.
who gives a f*ck is right! Amen!

GH has become stupid, too damned stupid to even enjoy..
It seems to be written for senile people in the Sunny Side Nursing home..

I said GH fall, and it’s going to keep falling..

They brought in a Cassadine from the devil himself, put him with people on Cassidine Island and it’s lame, weak and lame..
NO fire no dark drama, no spellbinding danger, no anything intriguingly suspenseful or exciting.
and- (according to upcoming spoilers ZZZZZZZZ)

Imagine if Guzza, RC, were writing the story, they would have us on the edge yellin ”WOW!” .

J&S can kill a wet dream with their lifeless writing ..sigh ..

agree Su — that group has been locked up in that house for days (wearing the same clothes) and absolutely NOTHING has happened!
I’m never sure why GH feels the need to introduce more kids to this show, I mean, Jason & Sam couldn’t care less about Danny.
We don’t know who Laura left Spencer with? The staff?
Elizabeth’s kids are either locked in their rooms or with grandma.
Avery, who Carly was so adamant to take away from Ava has all but been forgotten to the staff…

Don’t get me started on the bloated cast of useless characters. I SO wish Sabrina would have stayed gone.

Something better perk up or GH will find itself in the toilet with Days!

@su0000….Wouldn’t that be the “Sonny Side” Nursing Home???? I mean, isn’t everything in Port Charles “Corinthos-centric” these days????

I’m just waiting for the GH episode where “Super Sonny” flies out of a phone booth—okay, I know they’re practically obsolete these days, but please just humor me….—-in full tights and cape regalia to save the people of Port Charles!

You know, you might have a really insightful point there. Maybe the Sonny propping just hit the camel’s back.

just shows people aren’t interested in Sonny. the propping is hurting the show

When will ABC/Frank learn, we are tired of Mob Central and new characters!?!

hi Justin..
Do tell’ just who are the mobsters? What mobster stuff is happening?
there are 2 older men bickering lol All, personal stuff ..
One in the hospital and NO mob in sight
One being a father and grandpa and no mob in sight.
Where is ”Mob Central” in GH, I want to see it !!

GH has 2 semi-retired mobsters LOL ..

You’ve got heroic mobster Sonny who threatens women but we’re supposed to love him for it. And Julian rewritten overnight as a sociopath enemy of Sonny. Shootings, stabbings and key demo lows.

Oh, right, GH is doing just fine and everyone loves Sonny everyday day in every storyline all the time and the dismal ratings are….What, exactly? Fake?
You never fail to astound.

Some do and some dont but it looks like the destruction of Julian, the mumbling of Jason and the Freako Franco show are getting old for GH viewers!

Some do some dont but Victor lead the way along with the great Ray Wise to a positive ratings spike for Y&R!

Love, love, love Victor and Ray Wise scenes. Two veteran “warriors” playing off each other. And So glad they haven’t killed off Ray like GH did Carlos. Can’t afford to lose the great actors because of some short sighted decision by writers.

a major storyline with a newbie cahracter no one gives a shit about( Summer)…?
a forced romance with a horrible newbie breaking up a solid couple soon to be recasted..( CIARA, NuABBY)…?
a tired murder plot again with a nebie( deimos)…
plain boring writing….

IS DAYS PURPOSELY TRYING TO GET CANCELLED??????!!!!
IF so they re doing a good job

Ha! I gave up on this show awhile ago! Ciara is damn annoying! Popped in for Peter Reckell’s return, a minute for Matt Ashford and poof, the other crap couldn’t keep me around! Lots of faves on this show as far as actors I’ve loved for years but they can’t even fix this mess! Put it out of its misery already!

not surprised about Days. it’s been unwatchable. i still say the stuff that rolled out during the 50th killed the soap. the show is way too dark and depressing. doesn’t look like the dismantling of Julexis brought in any viewers. GH has taken big hits in 18-34 and i’m not surprised, the show is so boring. it boggles my mind why the two writers that tanked Y&R got the GH writing job. although Y&R was up,am not enjoying the show right now. Chuck Pratt has to go. he’s dismantling Y&R with nonsense plot stories and everyone acting out of character

Days deserves the all time low ratings. They might as well cancel it at this point.

Y&R definitely needs to fire Chuck Pratt.

Yep

I think the writers messed up by bringing in John/Jake Doe.. He should had been brought back as Jason/Stone Cold…. But since he wasnt liz did some dirty things and we still havent seen her pay for any of that. No Sam and Liz smack down. NOTHING!!! Now you have Jasam as Ken and barbie …Then you break up good couples like Nina and Franco . Maxie and Nathan are like watching paint dry. Now this Priest/Dr Griffin what is he for come on… I want to see the old GH.. Where they use to cheat on each other the suspense of them getting caught Mob wars killing..Is that to much to ask for??? And most some cat fights with Sam and Liz because Liz has it coming!!!

Last week’s shows were dominated by Julian & Alexis and Sonny being God and Jason & Sam on their really boring adventure.

Don’t know what it will take for TPTB to understand people don’t want to see these people. The Julian Alexis story was disturbing and Julian’s 180 degree change of personality was too sudden.

They might be loud on social media, but obviously the JaSam crowd is either much smaller than thought or they don’t watch. This couple is sleep-inducing and their “love” on the run adventure is more like “disdain” on the run. Billy clearly is not into this story.

As for Sonny–not sure why anyone is catering to the character (or the actor) but it’s clearly NOT a crowd favorite.

Stop the madness because ABC cancels this mess

Julexis has a huge fan base even off social media including with age demo categories but who wants to see a pairing built up as soul mates destroyed in a ridiculous agenda ridden overnight rewrite? turns out no one. ABC knew Julexis was its golden goose with key demos yet destroyed them overnight and for what? To promote this overnight rewrite of Sonny as the saint of all of PC. If Sonny is the show’s hero, can’t have his enemy, Julian out of the mob for his family if Sonny chooses to stay in. So that got fixed overnight and now Julian is trying to kill the love of his life. And you’re right, no one cares about a GH centered on a 50ish misogynist punk as the show’s hero. I think the recent ratings made that clear.

Very clear. And you’re right–the ONLY reason Julian had to be destroyed was to elevate Sonny. MB needs to go away

Frank and ABC will be in denial about Sonny until they finally kill this show.

When Tony Geary left the show, his last scene was with Maurice as he “passed the baton” to him. But since TPTB got rid of “THE WRITER”, it’s has truly gone from being the Luke show to the Sonny show.

Add in the return of Jason and you have the Batman and Robin of PC back taking over every story on the show.

I’m certain that was one of the scenes the ABC execs let Tony write. And that set this trainwreck of a show we now see in motion. I’m more certain every day Ron got fired because he wouldn’t cater to MB and his demand that Sonny=God. That’s how it’s written & the fans are tuning out

Maybe that is the reason Ron was fired, but if that is the case it was the right move for the wrong reason. Ron needed to be fired because his writing was a campy cartoon – only it wasn’t as clever or as flushed out as most cartoons are.

I totally agree about Sonny! I’ve never heard of the police dept. so openly allowing a mobster to dictate what it should do or be involved in the questioning of a suspect. ridiculous!

It’s amazing isn’t it. It kills me, as a longtime fan of Anna, to watch her work with him and take guidance from him. Vomit.

Im not surprised at GH taking a hit. They are trying to kill one of the most popular couples on the show, Alexis and Julian. Serves them right for bad writing. Days is sinking lower and lower to the cancellation bottom. Theres no love on either show anymore.

Killing Julexis is what hurt! GH better fix that! Maybe a twin?? I think that and the replacements especially Maxie! Ratings soared with Jasam so it is not them. I think Julexis fans were pissed!

I am NOT P—-ed! I’m waiting for the demise of Julian–and waiting for Genie Francis’ story to get in high gear (waiting ENDLESSLY–LOL!).

Me too Nancy, but I fear, as I always have, that Genie’s story is just filler.

Ratings did not soar with Jasam. They haven’t moved the ratings once.

The ratings have mostly been consistently trending down since Feb. Guess what happened then?

This Julexis fan is pissed. Sick to death of Sam and tiring of Jason. Referring to them as Batman and Robin was a good call. There isn’t anyone or any relationship I care about any more since Franco has started going wacko again and left his delightful partner to flounder. Get it together GH or you will have one less viewer in me.

I see some who don’t like how Jason and Sam are being written right now. I feel Molly is doing a good job playing Maxie.

Surprisingly, she is.

What little I can tell of the three I do catch not on a regular basis anymore is Y&R has been hijacked by the character of Victor Newman GH is Sonny B&B the triangle again of Liam Steffy & Wyatt. Please give those characters a rest and start writing for others it is suppose to be an ensemble cast?

that’s the problem with these shows. theirs no balance. the same few people are on everyday. when GH was hitting rating highs a few years ago,it wasn’t the Sonny show. i’m tired of seeing Sonny and Victor on Y&R on every single day

When is GH going to realize that replacing Ron Carlivati with Jean and Shelly was a mistake?

it was a bad decision to bring Jean and Shelly on after the terrible job they did at Y&R. Frank and Varni are also to blame for GH’s struggles. the show hasn’t improved and their demos are still bad. all these characters are ridiculous

It’s a lose lose! Ron was running out of gas and the scrap yard had two heaps left over from Y&R. Frank kicked their tires and they were flat!

About the same time TPTB realize that recent wrong the show around the Corinthos family and mob was the wrong direction to take the show in (i.e, don’t hold your breath)?

Michael (not Fairman)…Thought you wrote a very good comment on the “actors supporting Trump” story. And proud that we are all showing respect for each other’s points of view, even if they differ from ours.

Count me in as one of the many who isn’t the least bit surprised by GH’s “tumble”. The show has become practically unwatchable under Jelly. Force feeding viewers smug, smarmy characters like Sonny, Jason and Sam while demonizing Julian and decimating Julexis is getting the depressed numbers that this kind of drivel deserves. And if it’s allowed to continue, I’m sure this downward trend will eventually put GH in a virtual tie with DOOL. How sad.

the problem with general hospital is that the show has no respect for woman nikolas tried to kill hayden so she falls in love with him laura married her rapist and lucy along with all of port charles decided to bully micheal into forgiving sonny for killing his real father a.j there is no one to root for on this show like on young and the stupid days may not be perfect but its way better than the other 3 soaps no show is perfect but days and the late great another world and guiding light were waaaay better than young and restless and the bold and the beautiful lets go salem bay city and springfeild

No wonder the younger demos of the soaps are bad, because younger characters aren’t leading any storylines on any of the four soaps.

This so-called article says to me what I’ve been thinking for quite some time now aka the following:

1. Y&R…STILL RIDICULOUSLY HIT AND MISS!!!!!
2. B&B…very watchable…most of the time, anyway.
3. GH…at this point, BEYOND EMBARRASSING!!!!!
4. DOOL…STUPIDLY ON LIFE SUPPORT!!!!!

Just saying……….

yep. the creative has really gone down. none of the soaps are very good

It doesn’t surprise me one single bit that Days ratings are low, I hardly watch it anymore because it is so boring.

I have watched DAYS OF OUR LIVES for about (almost three) years. It was fine with EJ, Abigail and of course Sonny and Will but it is TERRIBLE now – it’s so draggy and the storylines are atrociously written. Belle is boring, her entanglement with Phillip doesn’t work, the god-awful Ciarra and her whiney repetitious dialogue is getting on my nerves (about the assault) and that kid who did it and is now in a mental facility is also dreadful – although I think they try their best.
Every once in a while they throw in Julie and Doug for no apparant reason – I hate to say it, because I want to like the show, but it is just awful and has been unwatchable for about 4 months or so. If it gets cancelled, so be it.
I only started watching because All My Children, which by the way was FAR superior than this show, got cancelled. I needed a “soap fix” so I became a Days fan – but they better get on the stick or for certain the sand will run out on Days.

Abigail was disgusting and do’t insult Ej, thank you very much !

Days is too dark, everything is negative negative negative.

GH is being badly written throughout, it needs a new head writing team and a cull of its cast. The cast is too large and there is too much focus on new characters and their back story.

B&B varies, 50% of the show is always dedicated to Liam Spencer’s latest love triangle, this is the half I just have to tolerate, the other half is pretty good. Though I wish they would bring Thorne, Kristen and Felicia back but that dream of mine is never happening by the looks of things.

Y&R is probably the most well balanced right now and uses its vets and newbies in the right quantities.

I don’t think the Summer story did Days any favors. Also, the Ciara and Chase story. Ciara anything as she can’t act.

Gh has way too many characters. All the newbies are a bore. Get rid of Valerie, Kiki, Andre, Curtis, Darby. Does anymore even care about them. Get rid of Jordan and make Anna the head huncho again. I never felt Michelle S. Fit in to show. She was so much better on Y &R. I like Micheal Easton and hope he finally gets a decent story. Also, Roger Howarth. Wish Todd caould come back. Anyone have a feeling Liz and Hayden are sisters? Also, please more Laura and Kevin. Do these idiot writers not realize we would love to finally see an adult love story by two of the finest actors??? Alexis and Julian were hot till they killed the relationship. I get nothing out of watching Kiki and Morgan and Darby and Dillion. Therecis no chemistry at all! Wish Scott Clifton could return as Dillion. Current actorcis a dud, rather have JPL in the role. Micheal has no storyline and Sabrina isxacwaste. She can go too. I like the actor playing Carlos’s brother. At least he can act. Clean out all the younger cast, more Laura and Kevin, and add in Lucy and Kevin and give Tracy morectodo.ni enjoy the show the most when the vets are on. Sorry, Sam and Jason are a total bore. Can not believe I am saying this but I miss Steve Burton. He and Kelly had so much more chemistry together. Poor Billy Miller can not hide the boredom on his face. Agree, way too much Sonny. The show needs new writers, cut down the cast members, and please more romance. What the hell happened to the days of Love In the Afternoon???? I am afraid we are slowly seeing the very end of daytime soaps with only B &B and Y & R remainig because they still have decent ratings. How sad.

This week, DAYS head scribe, Ron Carlivati, confirmed that, and told Michael Fairman TV on the decision of the scripts the team submitted: “I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, and then there was Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s (Louise Sorel) crashing the reading of the will.”

Days Of Our Lives

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves Talk Return to DAYS for Doug’s Funeral, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Their Enduring Friendship

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on December 3rd. The story will feature emotional and heart-tugging scenes of Doug Williams funeral and honor his portrayer, the beloved Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th at the age of 98.

While the actors, producers, and crew took a lunch time break to pose for some pictures and speak with the press, they knew they would have to get back to taping the funeral, which was going to make it a tough day, but also cathartic for all who loved Bill Hayes.

Several returns have thus far been announced including; Melissa Reeves reprising her signature role of Jennifer Horton (a part she first played in 1985), and Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux. Reeves had last appeared on the show back in 2021, and she was replaced by Emmy-winner Cady McClain in her absence when Jennifer was in storylines. In real-life, Melissa had moved full-time to Tennessee along with her husband, Scott Reeves (ex-DAYS, GH, Y&R). Now, and as previously reported, Reeves will first appear back on DAYS for the Thanksgiving episodes with the Hortons.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Matt and Melissa during the 15,000th episode celebration to get their take on: being back for these special episodes, how it has been working with and watching Susan Seaforth Hayes portray Julie’s grief over losing Doug, and how they have supported each other through the years. Check out what they shared below.

Melissa, you are back on the set of Days of our Lives for this very emotional and special moment in the series history. How does it feel?

MELISSA: Oh, my goodness. I am honored. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but to be here for Bill. He was like my real-life dance partner. He taught me how to ballroom dance. And to be here for Susan, of course, who’s just been our sweet hero this whole week. We’re just following her lead. She’s just been this incredibly strong example for us in the midst of this trial and season of her life. She is like just lifting us all up with her. It’s been incredible.

I was at Bill Hayes memorial service which was truly incredible and I know at the time you were in Tennessee. It was moving and celebratory of his life, all at the same time.

MELISSA: That’s all I have heard. I have to watch it on You Tube. They said it was just a real celebration of his life and I love that.

Photo: JPI

This must be difficult for Susan Seaforth Hayes depicting the death of Doug, when she is still grieving the loss of her beloved husband. (Susan pictured above with the returning Stephen Schnetzer who plays her on-screen brother, Steve Olson).

MELISSA: I’m sure Susan has those moments at home by herself, but she’s so good at being a leader and leading all of us. We’re following her, you know, and she’s like, “This is how I want to feel today.” And we’re just going along with her, you know? It’s so sweet.

Photo: JPI

How is it to see Matt Ashford again live and in-person?

MELISSA: You know, Matt and I can go years without talking, or seeing each other, and then the minute we see each other we’re chatting away.

MATT: Melissa was out on set doing a scene yesterday on the phone talking to a stage manager; as she was telling some really tough news on the phone. I’m like crying in the background, literally, I’m off-stage crying.

MELISSA: And then we get like back into normal life, and we’re like, okay, “What’s happening? What’s happening with this … or what’s happening with that?”

I had read, Melissa, that you were in touch with Matt about if there night be a possibility for you to reprise your role as Jennifer for these special episodes?

MELISSA: Yes. Well, Matt was like, “Hey! Would you want to come back? “And I was like, “Matt, you know, I would always come back. ”

MATT:  Every time I come here to Days of our Lives, they ask, “Where’s Missy? How’s Missy?” Everybody backstage says, “I miss her.” All of the crew is asking about her and saying, “It would be nice to see Missy. Nothing wrong with you Matt, but …”  They said, “Where is she?” I said, “She wants to come!”

Photo: JPI

There are some beautiful photos of Missy and Bill and Susan thorough the years that I found. It just reminded me of just the deep and entrenched history we all have had with the show, personally and professionally.

MATT: Missy is roughly the age where Francis Reid (ex-Alice Horton) was when she started the show, which is just crazy.

Photo: JPI

I’ve always said Missy was going to be the next generation Alice. Do you feel that Jennifer is the heir apparent matriarch of the Horton family?

MELISSA: Yes. I mean, this has been greatest blessing of my life, and that would be great. I told Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of our Lives) when I was 17 that this show would be my life. Ken always told me, “This is your home,” and I’ve always felt like that.

How have gotten through the scenes watching Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie go through the loss of Doug?

MATT: Susan is bringing her best performance life for her and Bill. I mean, she’s a showbiz baby. She always has been one hundred percent, and she’s doing it for him, and this is who they’ve always been. So, you’re seeing this amazing performance colored by her life. She has her private life as Susan, but she has enough plugged into Julie that she’s done amazing work. The director, producers and writers are giving her room to live in these moments and it’s quite wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Have you already broken down in tears during the taping?

MELISSA: Yesterday, but today’s taping of the actual funeral I think they want us to try and be just more celebratory.

MATT: I mean, it is a beautiful long life for Bill Hayes and his character of Doug Williams, and so it will be about that. Then, you get a bunch of us together in the church pews, and there’s going to be hijinks.

MELISSA: We all have been through the waves of grief. You have that awful cry and then all of a sudden you feel okay.  There are those family situations we are portraying where you’re like, “What do we do? What do we do now? You know, no one knows what to do. But, it’s so sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the scenes all turn out.

So, are you glad that Matt and Melissa are back for the 15K episode and Doug’s funeral? From what we can tell, it’s going to be quite an emotional journey for Days of our Lives fans, and especially the performance of Susan Seaforth Hayes,

Days Of Our Lives

Ron Carlivati Talks on Decision to Make Days of our Lives 15000th Episode About Doug’s Funeral, and Previews Chances for WGA Award

This week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode. In of it itself, that is an incredible accomplishment for the long-running soap opera currently streaming on Peacock.

However, this on set gathering was a bit different. Though the show is celebrating their achievement, they are also in the middle of taping scenes surrounding the death and the funeral of Doug Williams, played by the late Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th of this year at the age of 98.

As previously revealed many longtime favorites are back to honor Bill and the character of Doug including: Gloria Loring (Liz), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Matthew Ashford (Jack), Maree Cheatham (Marie), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Stephen Schnetzer (Steve) to name but a few.

Michael Fairman TV was in attendance and spoke with Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati to gain some insight into how the 15,000 episode was crafted and the decision to honor the character of Doug Williams and Bill Hayes as its epicenter. In addition, Ron weighed-in on this Sunday’s April 14th WGA (Writers Guild of America) Awards, where he and his writing team are facing off with General Hospital for the daytime drama prize. Here’s what Ron shared below.

Was this your idea to make the 15,000th episode centered around Doug’s funeral and passing?

RON: It was. When you’re looking at it, and laying out the calendar for the whole year and you see 15,000 is coming up, we’re like, “What are we going to do?” And then, we got the news that Bill had passed away and something kind of clicked. I was like, “We should honor Doug on that show.” So then, we started to kind of build around that … when does he pass away? How does he pass away? Who could come back? You know, it’s a lot.  I’m very pleased with the returns that we got as there’s so much that you could do. We wanted everybody we could get. So, we put together a wish list and Janet Drucker (co-executive producer, Days of our Lives) made it happen.

You have Melissa Reeves back as Jennifer, when the role was last played by Cady McClain. What has it meant to have Missy back for these shows?

RON: It was so nice to see Missy Reeves. I think Cady has done such a good job, but on the 15,000th episode to see Missy as Jennifer, it’s a big deal. So having her was great, and overall, the milestone was a big undertaking, because you want to live up to it. You want the 15,000th episode to be good. Now, it has a lot of real emotion that you’re playing. because for the cast and the crew they’re honoring Bill Hayes just as much as we’re honoring Doug Williams.

Was it hard for you and the team to write this episode?

RON: Yes. I’ll tell you why it was hard to write.  When I wrote, for example, Asa’s (Phillip Carey) death on One Life to Live or Victor’s (John Aniston) on DAYS, Asa is a different type of character. Like, you could have characters going, “Oh! I’m glad he is dead.” You could have different points of view, but with Doug, you’re not having that. Every person loves this man. No one had a bad relationship with him. So, you’re challenge as a writer is how do you make it that not everybody’s saying the same thing and doing the same thing. And so, we tried to find ways to make the episode about all the familial relationships and yet, how do you make it about Doug and yet broaden the scope.

I had spoken to Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), a week after Bill’s memorial, for an interview. She said that she felt very fortunate that you did include her on discussions of how you would tackle Doug’s passing. How did that conversation go?

RON: First, I attended Bill’s funeral, which was incredible. I said to so many people it was an emotional service, but it was hard to be sad at this. The guy had an incredible life and it was an incredible celebration. And so, you’re sitting there watching this knowing that you now have to write something similar. And how do you write something that lives up to what you just witnessed? I wanted to talk to Susan to get her thoughts about, you know, how much do you want this to be about keeping Bill separate from Doug. How comfortable are you sharing your grief. She was incredible to talk to. It was a great chat.

You’re in the middle of taping these major scenes for the 15,000 episode to air in December. How do you think it’s going? Have you seen any of the scenes?

RON:  I haven’t seeing anything. I mean, we were still making changes to the script up till this morning!

The Writers Guild Awards are this Sunday, April 14th and once again this year there are two daytime drama nominees, General Hospital and Days of our Lives. How are you feeling about your chances this year?

RON: It is often just GH and us in the category. I’ve won three years in a row, so I’m kind of feeling like it’s their turn.

What episodes did you submit for contention? If I recall, they had to do with Victor’s memorial.

RON: The episodes we submitted were centered around Victor’s funeral. I think one has story with Vivian (Louise Sorel). We had some fun stuff, we had some emotional stuff at Victor’s death, and I am pretty sure that our submission was three episodes right around that time.

Did you make the decision to go with those episodes because there was a mix of humor and drama?

RON: I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, then there’s Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s crashing the reading of the will. So, we had a lot of fun and it’s hard sometimes to pick three that tell a story, as opposed to submitting for the Daytime Emmys, where the writing team only submits two shows. So, we shall see how it goes on Sunday.
