RATINGS: Disappointing Week For All Soaps: DAYS, GH, B&B and Y&R!

The ratings are out for the week of November 16th through November 20th and suprisingly it was a bad week all around for the four network daytime drama series.  Every single soap saw minuses in the total viewer category.

Even Days of our Lives which has such a strong week of story culiminating in Bo (Peter Reckell) dying in Hope’s (Kristian Alfonso)  arms did not generate an uptick in viewership losing -119,000.  However, it was General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful that saw the most losses with -176,000 and -184,000.   The Young and the Restless while having a 5 million plus viewer average for it’s Wednesday episode was still – 123,000 in the debit department for the week in total viewers when all was said and done.

In addition, all key women demos: 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 saw all soaps in the minus column, except for The Young and the Restless who gained +11,000 in the 18-34 category, while The Bold and the Beautiful tied an all-time low in the 18-49 ratings share at o.83/6 (-.14/-.16)

While on GH, Liz (Rebecca Herbst), Sam (Kelly Monaco),and Jason (Billy Miller) were heading to Cassadine Island to find out what they could about Jason’s scrambled brain, DAYS Bo (Peter Reckell) was coming to terms with this fate as were his sister (Mary Beth Evans), his best friend (Stephen Nichols) and his beloved “Fancy Face”, (Kristian Alfonso), Y&R’s Sage (Kelly Sullivan) and Nick ( Joshua Morrow) were dealing with the fallout from losing baby Christian, while Dr Anderson (Elizabeth Bogush) wreaks more havoc, and Elise Moxley (Jensen Buchanan) turns up on the scene, and B&B delved into Thomas (Pierson Fode) and Ivy (Ashleigh Brewer) sleeping together and the ramification of Ivy’s relationship with Wyatt (Darin Brooks), still the show’s were not in the positive numbers wise. View the entire ratings picture courtesy of SON here.Numbers are based on Live+Same Day ratings

(Compared to Last Week/Compared to Last Year)

Total Viewers
1. Y&R 4,894,000 (-123,000/-162,000)
2. B&B 3,518,000 (-184,000/-220,000)
3. DAYS 2,687,000 (-119,000/+205,000)
4. GH 2,668,000 (-176,000/-429,000)

Yes, the impending holidays caused a decline…also, even with Days the best improved written and acted soap-too much gloom and doom…with the real world full of tragedy people need an escape and the soaps arent providing it at the moment for some…GH is just so-so…Laura needs her own story instead of just meddling in different characters lives…give us a suprising twist and have her blurt out to Jason how Liz and Nik kept his identity a secret! Cant we have at least one honest character on this show?…Please get rid of Valerie, and a few other characters!

I like that Laura is there for her kids and I hope GV returns as Lucky but yes, doesnt Laura need laid? That was cheap but doesnt she want to fall in love again? Come on writers, give Laura someone to cuddle with over Christmas!

I hope now that WK isnt tied to Days he can return to GH more often as Ned and maybe become involved with Laura instead of Olivia!

is Laura going dark? could be? hopefully?

Nicholas can’t believe that Laura said… with Helena dead… the secret they share is one less person who “knows”

as she tells Nicholas… they only have to contend with Hayden !

LOL… I love this… if Laura backbone is a little seedy and dastardly… why not?

as she celebrates at “the haunted star” with champagne

I’m so w/ su….. where will they find a leading man for? she may as well get involved with Nicholas and ELQ… get mean it Laura !

Jon Lindstrom as Kevin… needs to be on this show…. Yummy twosome… if not with Anna

Yes, Laura needs a lush, romantic love story–and I hear she is going to get one!

I agree about GH, so-so sums it up perfectly, and it feels like Laura is being wasted, again!

She is…sad but true!

I also think that as long as Sonny and Carly are written as the moral center or matriarch and patriarch of the show, numbers will go nowhere but down. It alienates so many viewers.

Please do not waste Genie Francis–I did love her soliloquy about Helena’s death as she drank champagne in the Haunted Star!

And, since TG’s departure, Genie seems to have shed the pall that was cast over
her and to have shed the “shackle” of that whole catastrophe.

Oh, Justin …..it would indeed, be a sad day in soapdom to have Sonny as patriarch and Carly as matriarch. Too bad Laura cannot have that honor. How about Tracey? They do not have to necessarily be married, I guess. I liken Sonny to Victor Newman, the patriarch. Pathetic!
Moral center? Sonny? Carly? Oh, my! If either stared at morality in the eye, ‘it’ would laugh right in their faces. The Corinthos’s definition of morality doesn’t exist. Webster himself would not be able to define their version.

Hi Jimh..
Poor Laura, she simply doesn’t fit into GH, any longer..
There is nothing there for the character but Nik and he doesn’t need her..
Lulu doesn’t need her, either. She isn’t connected/involved with anything to give her a story.
I can’t think of one thing concerning Laura that would even be interesting enough to give her a story..
And-
J&S can not do better than what they are giving us.. they are lackluster writers, they never have written high drama/ remember 2014 Y&R, I don’t I was comatose while watching the big snooze. Don’t be expecting much from them. lol ..

((Pratt came into Y&R blazing (he was prepared and ready to bring it)
The new writers of Days came in blazing (prepared and ready to bring it)
RC came into GH blazing (he was prepared and ready to bring it)
J&S came into GH with a whimper. Dull everything. (no good plots no excitement, no on the edge, no anything.
GH and the snooze queens are not a good match..
Having Laura back has accomplished nothing..
Robins return and exit will be a revival week, then nothing much.
I fear for GH …

su… i do like Genie and i like she is there for her kids but you are right…she isnt fitting in at the moment!

Shove it Su000. You know NOTHING about the history of this show. If you did, you would understand that they should be writing the entire show around her.

Laura IS GH–and fits like a glove–so glad she is getting airplay. Go, Genie.

Ahhh, Su. Here we go again. Laura IS fitting. We can’t have her jump into anything as yet. Romantically or otherwise. The r’s no one en par with her, anyway. Someone mentioned Ned. Yeah, I’d like that! She needs to get her sea legs back….re-acquaint herself with her ‘surroundings’. More importantly, a mother is never superfluous. Every soap is family oriented, Su. Oh, but wait! I remember now…..you like mobster families to be the core of a soap; any soap. You’re in the minority, Su. But, who am I to speak….you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that…..you feel how you feel. Sobeit. I love Laura/Genie and that’s my opinion. Later, babes.

Hi, Jimmy.
I hope Nina is not on your ‘getting rid of’ list. But, she probably is, as so many other posters want the same thing. Lol. I look at her as a-flower-in-bloom. Her time will come. She will buy CRIMSON from sneaky, manipulative Julian , making the magazine a success; well, with Maxie’s help, of course! You just wait….lol.

To keep you happy…i guess they can keep Nathan…lol…Nina…yes, she just doesnt interest me…when she is on i take that time to clean out my fingernails…ive built a hill with the dirt…now if it snows i can open up my very own ski resort…lol

Ooooh, CeeCee, I do so hope you are wrong about your beloved Nina! If today’s stunt of simply giving her a mini-makeover and then attempting to shake off her insane past with a soliloquy-style recitation of former mistakes and misdeeds is meant to absolve her character of her many wrongdoings, make us suddenly love her and want her to stick around Port Charles, well, sorry….it ain’t gonna happen! Quite frankly, Nina is unnecessary and becomes more so with each passing day…..nothing can change that!….Maxie is the one who should be running Crimson, and for those of us who’ve always adored her “fashionista” flair, it actually grates to see Ms. Jones playing a pep-talking second banana to that deplorable ding-a-ling. The same story could easily have been told sans Nina had Julian instead dumped the magazine in Maxie’s lap thinking she would fail miserably, but voila!… she’d amaze him by prevailing magnificently….Lulu could have assisted her just like old times, or even poor Laura, who so sorely deserves a real storyline. There were plenty of clever ways to approach this same basic notion, but with better, more fitting legacy players. The showrunners need to wave the white flag and declare defeat on annoying newbie deadweight like Nina, Sappy and Val-Chops (just to name a few….) and stop inventing lame reasons for them to remain on the canvas…….they’re just not working! Time to throw in the towel and move on. End of story…..

I love Michelle and Roger but they suck on GH!

Oh Ceec’

I’m so hoping with you…. that Ms. Stafford (ala Phyllis ) returns with a steady gait backbone sexy getting IT

LOL… Nov. 17th ep’ : not wanting to believe what I heard… RH’ Franco is having a psych evaluation to get his job back… tells the dr. he “has not” consummated with his lady love Nina

Nina confirms this by telling a taken aback Nathan on the Nov. 19th ep.

could this be what ails our Nina and Franco!

had to go their….

any way… who is sick and tired of Laura Wright’ Carly… in your face loud mouth? she is so dire dour and dull.

GH WRITERS ! recognize the powerhouse you have in MIchelle Stafford ! stop her childlike antics and stammering…

Port Charles needs an all out take no prisoners leading lady… because i’m so over Carly… and Sonny

Nina vs. Carly !?!?

Michelle Stafford by a long shot…. I’m still waiting for and holding vigil

i’m hoping once she gets in the groove and lives a normal life.. her brain freeze will let up and we’ll see how strongwilled determined and in charge this woman is capable

ie: back to LW’ Carly : OK ease up! but… I was just livid as she had the gall to tell Liz to give “Jason” up… !!!! ????

and.. Carly tells “Jason” he’s scared and hiding !!!! ????

give me an expletive break already!

I loved that at least “Jason” tells Carly… you’ll just have to get used to me.. not verbatim… but I am sick of how the GH writers trot out Laura Wright… and she goes all commando and comes out stupid as all get out

I think… ( and it’s not all Laura Wright fault) but she just happened to have taken over the role… when she had kids with mouths and minds of their own… and she ( ok pelt me now) lost all her sex appeal… all her sensual… all her come hither antics … that worked…. with Sarah Brown and Tamara Braun… they were FUN to watch… especially my Sarah Brown… WOW

so Laura Wright is saddled with and being matronly and middle age… but… they’ll throw her a bone to chew on… and what we get is enough!

@Timmm.
Thank you for that, Timmm. Your comment is very fair. Michelle Stafford is certainly not a two-bit actress. She is a multiple Emmy winner (outstanding lead). There’s a reason for that. Granted, one may criticize her wardrobe, her hair, her make-up etc., but do not minimize her acting ability. It is unfortunate that both she and Roger are stuck in these roles. I have had a girl-crush on Michelle for fifteen years. I am sure you remember her wardrobe on Y&R…..those clothes adorned that perfect body like nothing else…..the cat’s meow, she was….still is. Those endless legs are to die for, Timmm. And, I am straight! I like men. Lol. Roger? I love him…..I always have; since I was ten. I started watching OLTL since Starr first walked on stage.
Nina’s mental state is nothing to ridicule….serious issue and very real. As I have always maintained, MadMaddie was her daughter’s downfall. But, it’s a soap. My claim is that Michelle’s or Roger’s ‘sucky’ roles should not reflect/negate their talent. At least she does not need to flaunt her wares, as some others, to make an impression (a bad one at that). I admit Michelle is not a good fit for Nina, nonetheless, I cannot turn off my infatuation/admiration for her in a snap. I am loyal from head to toe…..and, forever….with family and friends.
Michelle created Phyllis, thus, by the same token, Gina Tognoni has butchered the image for me….that is not Phyllis….never will I accept Gina as Phyllis. Bad job. No one can freeze a body with one look as Michelle’s Phyllis. No one can be the femme fatale, the seductress, the bad girl, the good girl/woman, the wonderful mother and wife as Michelle. No one can be such a fascinating and magnetic walking contradiction as she.
I LOVE YOU MICHELLE!!!!!!!

************************
My prayers go to those poor souls in San Bernardino…..my heart aches…..BLESSINGS!!

ie: last Friday ep: at the Cassadine Island… w/ Nicholas, Helena, Sam, Liz, and Jason

Helena calling Sam a Guttersnipe

Nicholas : “Grandmother, Please… ”

LOL

I rolled on the floor… take that !

doesn’t Sam deserve that plus

the thing that galls me… is our little Nancy Drew… character is let in on secrets.., as she overhears Jake telling Daniel Edward… that his mom and grandma know a secret

???? all to prop Sam…

even after the fact… she tells Patrick that she is still in love with him.. that Jason is not the same Jason she knew and loved… but can’t stop her la la land dreams of “Jason”

AND she tells Jason… he can file for divorce

???

yet she has the audacity to use Jake… to get further “proof” that something is going on… will she use this to tell Jason… even tho she’s moved on?!?!

not much intrigue going on here… when one is not vested in … will they or wont’ they “consummate” or whatever

so many dim bulbs currently; Carly, Sam, Lulu, Maxie

@Patrick.
Oh, my friend, Patrick! It warms the heart to know I am not alone ‘loving’ Michelle.
Hey, you may be right. She has only had the taste of honey once since Nina came to us….and that was with her husband, Silas. Sooooo, she probably does need a large dose of ‘sweetness’.
Yes, Carly is a force to be reckoned with, but, Laura is one great talent. She is good! I am enjoying her suspicions of Liz, whom I’d love to smack that beautiful, spiteful face around a few times. Carly will come through for Jason whether he likes it or not.
Hey, Patrick? Aha! I THOUGHT that was you rolling on the floor with me…LOL. Later.

@Shay.
Hi, Shay Shay.
Let me ask you this: what is the difference between Nina and The Britch? Morally speaking.????Mentally speaking???? DNA speaking?????
I suppose it is a matter of preference, albeit I hope Michelle goes back to Y&R with Billy Miller….wishful thinking.
Believe me, Shay, Michelle Stafford is about fifty years old….how many women that age look that good, naturally? Nina has been asleep for twenty years….it goes without saying that she is still in her infancy when it comes to the 21st century and all its trimmings. We cannot compare this sleeping beauty with Maxie, who may be tuned in the fashion world…but, the girl is not exactly sophisticated. She can be quite annoying, except for her pretty dresses. Apples and oranges.
You feel for Nina what I feel for Sonny…LOL. We will never develop a liking for them, respectively. However, I do agree that Michelle should leave GH if TPTB continue in this vein, as far as her role is concerned. She is too good an actress; her talent wasting away. I don’t share your antipathy for the actress. Hey, that’s okay. It’s good to disagree. Thank goodness we do it in a civil manner.
As far as keeping the vets…fine….that’s great. But, it is what it is……a revolving door. We all age. Some actors may want to retire. It has always been thus. It is certainly not Michelle’s fault or decision whether the vets stay or go. Everyone was a newbie at one time or other.
I think Maxie will walk Nina down this brand new road; from Gucci to Jimmy Choo. Doors will open for both of them. C’mon, Shay. Open your mind. Can’t you see it? Nina has the cash; Maxie has the inspiration. The best thing would be for Nina to buy Julian out. Oh, girl! Maxie and Nina will ride their magic carpet and soar…. Lol….A piu’ tardi, amore.

I agree.

“Days of Our Lives” used to be the show you could rely on, especially during the holidays, to find couples reunited or somebody returns to town after being missing for years.

Now it’s like going back to your old hometown after being away for 20 years and finding out most of the town folk, friends and kin, have all died. Depressing as can be.

So true…i still like the show but if it doesnt brighten up soon i might stop watching,…i cant watch shows i find depressing!

SO THIS IS NOVEMBER SWEEPS….PROBLEM IS THIS,,THE STORYLINES ARE DRAGGED OUT WAY TO LONG ,BY THE TIME THE SWEEPS ARE AIRING EVERYONE HAS LOST INTEREST,,,I STAYED TUNED FOR THE BIG JASON REVEAL ONLY TO HAVE IT BEING DRAGGED OUT EVEN LONGER WITH HELENAS SO CALLED DEATH,,OVER AT Y AND R,,WE WATCHED THIS REDICULOUS OVE DONE AND REPEATED DID I SAY REPEATED STORYLINE OF A BABY SWITCHING IN A MENTAL HOSPITAL STORYLINE AGAIN,,,ADAM WAS FREED,,WOW THAT WAS A SHOCK,, I THINK THE SOAPS ALL NEED TO GO BACK TO BASIC CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND CREATING STORY FROM THERE,,,ALL I CAN SAY IS IM VERY THANKFUL FOR MY PVR,,,, A SHOW IS PRETTY BAD WHEN U FAST FORWARD THE SHOW BUT STOP TO WATCH THE COMMERCIALS…

I dont know why they drag things out so far. Really, look what happened to OLTL and AMC. It can end very soon for ABC and NBC. Write like there is no tomorrow because it could very well happen!

I might have an answer, Timmm..
Remember what was common for soaps , decades back..
The stories were very long.. Soap moto; keep them waiting..
The writers are from the 80-90’s era and that is how they write, keep them waiting and the same old….

However; this is the fast, everything fast, and wanting faster 21st century and the writers do not know how to write shorter fast paced stories and they do not have the imagination to create new stories..
IF they were to end the slow ongoing stories they would need to come up with new stories, so they drag out the current stories to avoid having to create faster paced shorter that would require more work..

Not saying that the writers were bad not saying the stories were not good, but- the stories did go on forever… 4 main stories, usually, going on for 6 months or more.

The soaps would be totally different in their plots, pace, and format if they brought in younger new minds/ideals to write for the 21st century soaps..
That ^^^^ is the savior of the soaps.. New young blood/writers

The writers of many decades past still write as they did back in the 70-80- 90’s and all the great writers of the era are long gone..
the sopas need new blood, fresh writers preferably in their 30’s..

Su…agree with your assessment of pace and writers. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on you point of view?), it seems to be a world of tweets, hashtags, less time for leisure and real conversation, and instant gratification. Hard for the older soap model to compete. But they do need to speed it up…6-12 months just ain’t gonna fly anymore to tell a story. And if it’s too expensive for 1 hour shows, I could live with back-to-back, 1/2 hour shows if the stories, characters, and relationships are interesting.

I doubt the networks invest into developing new writers for daytime soaps…probably too expensive. Thus the writer musical chairs between soaps, and overly reused themes. But it makes you wonder if ABC had put more money into story and writers how that would have compared to the losses that must come from all their failed, less expensive shows, as well as the bad PR and lose of longtime, loyal soap viewers.

As far as I know…and I’m not being sarcasti, Su, you’re not a writer. These people are. Soaps are their forte. Soaps are soaps. They’re not prime time shows, they’re not meant to have a fast pace, different story each week. And as far removed from real life as they are, they are realistic in the sense that romance, sickness, betrayal, family dynamics…take time to occur and time to resolve.

That’s s not to say that some stories can’t be resolved sooner. But if you look at longevity of any of these soaps…they’ve lasted and continue to last well beyond the few seasons that even fantastic prime time shows..which are written by writers of all ages, last.

TV has a lit of competition these days. Soaps are just one of its casualties.

I always look at the Compared to Last Year column. Days is up from last year, which is good news. GH, on the other hand, is down, a lot. But, as a long time (former) GH viewer, I still haven’t found that much of an interest to tune back in daily, and I think the numbers speak the same for a lot of viewers of GH.

The BIG Jason reveal wasn’t much of a reveal at all. The whole town knew about it and considering the character isn’t embracing his name and Elizabeth wasn’t found out, the episodes after have been pretty dull.
I don’t even think Billy Miller is enjoying this because I’m not enjoying watching it.

I dont blame the holidays. We can blame Thanksgiving when next weeks rating come out! And really, why? The soaps were only on three days anyway. Here is my opinion on three of the soaps.

Days: I’m shocked! Thats it.

Y&R: It has been bad again. Victor and Adam are dancing back and forth, with helping each other and back to not trusting each other. Billy and Red are involved in some lame revenge that will be Burgess’s exit. Anything Winters sucks! Dylan is laughable. Sharon is clueless AGAIN!

GH: Fans are tired. We limped through Fluke and now we are being asked to do the same thing with Jason. I think a lot of fans were hoping he would be Jason Q. He isnt either and were just fed up! Laura is laughable, very few fans like Sabrina or Valerie and we are tired of GH not incorporating legacy characters into the fold. Monica couldnt have shared ONE story about Alan or even Lila during Jason’s Thanksgiving visit? Sad.

I agree with you that Y&R has gotten bad again. That baby switcheroo story is horrid with no positive outcome. You know Sharon will figure it out but remain silent in order not to hurt Dylan. Ultimately, it will come out and Baby Sully will turn back into Baby Christian and be returned to Sage and Nick, thereby breaking both Sharon and Dylan’s heart. Oh, but if that isn’t bad enough it’s been revealed that Adam is the father of Sage’s baby so Nicholas will have his heart broken too.
The fact that Victor is blackmailing Adam with the secret of the baby’s paternity is also absurd. Both Nicholas and Chelsea already know Sage slept with Adam. This secret should not be so damning to Adam.
I know I keep repeating myself but the truth is soap viewers need a pay off for long dragged out stories which were predicated upon confusion, negativity, tragedy and loss. Both Y&R and GH are not giving the viewer any kind of reward for hanging in there for so long.
Hey, we are soap fans–we aren’t expecting Masterpiece Theater, Shakespeare or The Sopranos. We aren’t that hard to please–we just need some semblance of a positive resolution to our stories.

Hey, Harry,
What about the Ian Ward debacle? I find that entire ‘skit’ ridiculous. Victor, Phyllis and Ian in a hotel room talking much about nothing. What the hay? Then, Victor has Phyllis in a choke-hold. Yeah, really impressive! What an utterly stupid, dumb move. Ian, the sociopath cares for Phyllis? Oh, yeah….she looks really scared. Is Ian, who seems to outsmart everybody, is buying this? And, Victor Newman reduced to a mere puppet? Plaeeese!!!!
And then there’s Patty….here, there and everywhere….sweet, naive, delusional, crazy Patty. Patty and Ian. How adorable; how cute, how droll !!!!!!
I am not following any of this convoluted choppy, serrated soap…..so many clouds in my coffee….I feel a Caroline psychic attack coming on…..I see the future. I see Y&R slipping away. Lord, make it stop.

PS, Harry.
It just came to me that Patty may putting on a great act just to trick Ian? Lo and behold!! Could she ultimately be the heroine to bring Ian to his knees? Will Patty present Ian, gift-wrapped and all, to her brother for Christmas?

All good stuff Harry. It doesnt make sense that Victor is so calm about Christian’s paternity. He says family always comes first but he chose Adam and his company over telling Nick about the truth of who the baby’s daddy really is!

I love General Hospital. GH is my soap. However, right now baby Avery is the most compelling reason to tune in. The pacing of the show is off. The many mini cliffhangers are not compelling, just exhausting and frustrating. The show has the best cast in daytime but the writing and direction are painfully predictable. I feel like I’ve been watching the same stories unfold for years. Yet I continue to tune in every day because the cast is just so strong. Long live GH!

Everything you said is sacrosanct, Mister Media. Avery is a joy to watch….those little sounds she makes, trying to be in the conversation tear me to pieces. My arms call out to her. I wish I could hold her. My baby girl and she would get along famously, lol.
I am glad you find any cliffhangers at all; lol. I do not see any worth awaiting…..we know the outcome aforehand, so no compelling anticipation there. But, as I said, this seems to be the theme for all the soaps that I do watch. I have never gotten into B&B….don’t care for Diamont or Young. Those two are enough to turn me off the show.
Nonetheless, as yourself, I watch eagerly and faithfully…..because that’s what we do? LOL.

Hey CeeCee, how about Sonnybucks singing “Beautiful Dreamer” to Avery on Monday’s show? That had to soften your stance on Sonny for ONE minute? I had a tear in my eye. So sweet. FYI: Go to You Tube and put “Beautiful Dreamer-Raul Malo” in the search box. One of the BEST versions of this song I ever heard. Later girl.

@Timmm.
Hey, my Timmm. Thanks, Malo’s version is quite enjoyable. I like the Tex/Mex spin he put on the song. Nice voice, too.
Nothing will ever change my mind about Sonny. Not even if he would ever make peace with The Almighty God. I detest controlling men especially the mobster-kind. And, I do not find his dimples attractive either. He should stop dying his hair and stop layering all that pomade/lard on it. I would love to come face-to-face with him. He surely would be at a loss for words!!!! LOL, AND DOUBLE LOL.
Bye, my love.

Yes, CeeCee, Avery is an absolute living doll… not unlike your own little princess, I’m sure! But I was slightly disappointed in her outfit the other day….she was dressed so drably, almost like a boy, well, at least, very gender neutral! The “Baby Uggs” were cute enough, but I prefer seeing this munchkin done up all “pretty in pink” with tights, a beautiful dress, fluffy pastel cardigan and mary janes. I’m sure you know what I’m saying….oh, by the way, I just saw the most adorable pair of miniature pink wellies and thought to myself, I’ll bet Rosalba has a pair of those! (Toooo sweet!) And how is the little lady? All set for Santa????? Just had to ask….Later!

@Shay.
Hey, there!
I was so attuned to Avery’s little noises and cute face that I didn’t even notice what she was wearing, lol. I can tell you that her mommy needs a new wardrobe. Ava must have the worst taste in clothes. No fashionista, she!…..en par with Carly, albeit I loved Ms Corinthos’ open-toed black pumps.
You guessed right, Shay. I am a bit old fashioned, a bit eclectic and a bit modern when it comes to dressing Rosie. I love little, pastel dresses….you know; short enough where the back frills of her tights are visible . And yes, she has a few mary janes, wellies and uggs. Marie Chantal, Christopher Fischer, Fahrenheit 451 and Marie Eiffel are a few of the boutiques in the Hamptons I just love. We’re not quite ready with Santa yet….getting there, though.
Surprisingly enough, Shay, I have not seen too much Christmas deco on stage. Perhaps, I am so concerned with ‘taming’ this rage I have for Valerie that I am blinded to everything else. And, Dante! What a jerk! I do hope that whatever scheme Maxie is cooking up works. I want Lulu to retaliate in kind leaving him in her dust as he licks his wounds. ‘Nite.

So many variables influence the ratings. It’s holiday time and in my opinion the writing is still to dated ie. GH. I mean really the mob should be in the 21st century. I know they brought it in because of the Godfather fame but lets update. Ultimately I prefer more hospital. But I’m just an old broad view 😉 Also I watch all the soaps except for DOOL. I watched that faithfully in my teens.

This is really bad news.
GH needs to get it together. Simply point, there is no pay off for the long and dragged out stories loyal viewers have to endure. And Nina, Franco, Kiki, Morgan Sabrina, Valerie and Ava are sucking all the oxygen from the room.
I was hoping the new writing team could salvage the mess Ron has made of things but simply put, they are not strong enough.
I

Opps–should read, simply put, not simply point. I pushed send before I was done typing.

Simply Yours,

Harry.

I don’t think it’s fair to put all the blame on Ron. The new writers have been airing for at least 6 weeks; there’s really been no movement towards anything different to my eye other than giving Nina a career. I think it’s pretty clear that the current GH is what ABC wants.

hi Paul..
Pratt came into Y&R ready to go! he had mapped out his way and came in with excitement, J&S has many months to prepare and came in with a whimper..

Jean was even writing/tweaking her takeover while working on set writing with GH month or two before she took over and they had more time than most new writers to write their entrance and beyond to bring it on, no excuse for their fail to bring it.

eh Harry never like Ron, no big deal..
Ron was highly praised for his 52nd anniversary show, the back in time black & white story. Luke coming full circle..
All, the soap reporters agreed it was one of the best if not the best soap story and will be archived as so..
He also wrote the Luke/Fluke story in the padded room that gave Tony his 8th emmy material and Tony will most likely get his 9th emmy for his performance in the black & white story/episode which Ron wrote.

Ron had 3 million viewers up and until the Tony exit loooooong story and FV had way more to do with that than Ron, as did ABC for the exit of their icon star Tony.

Ron is the most likely one to save GH, again.. He had a badly needed break after Tony’s exit and would ready to bring it…
And to people saying Ron couldn’t write couples, he wrote some well remembered couples stories of OLTL.. ((couples are boring anyways )

J&S has neutered every manly man of GH, I don’t even recognize their spirited fire and confidence, any longer.. the poor unics ..

LONG LIVE GH!!!

@Harry…..Simply put, you are spot-on!!!!!

You need secondary characters but the ones you mention are horrible! Big trouble, simply POINT!

DAYS is winning but yes, as some said, dark. There is a a realness to it, however. The GH stories are just too weird for me anymore. Am hoping the Jason reveal is the end ofl the silly Cassadine story that has gone one waaaaay too long. B&B is like a French roundelay, same short tune played over and over just with different Forresters and Logans. And I am tired of the song. Y&R seems to use its characters as pawns in whatever rollercoaster plot its writers can devise with no regard for history or hope for redemption. And I miss the elegance and class Genoa City denizens once displayed. I cannot root for anyone on that show anymore. Where is the evolution?

I’m shocked the episode where Bo dies didn’t get higher ratings. It was beautiful and touching, jam-packed with flashbacks of the two of them! Still, it wasn’t that long ago 1.94 WAS HIGH for Days. Word needs to get around how good it is now. Maybe William Shatner can help (he recently started watching – and tweeting about – Days), LOL.

The DAYS drop in ratings is expected. Bring Bo back to kill him off. Lose major players like Kassie DePaiva, Wally Kurth and Judi Evans. Necktie killer is almost over and now there is nothing to look forward to. Kristin is gone. Sami comes and goes as her schedule dictates and all we are left with is the sound of John Black and Marlena Evans and their EX-LAX stories.. “John, I have to go again, did you put too much laxative in my coffee?” “Marlena, I might have, I am so upset that I don’t know my Mommy and Daddy I slipped up and gave you three teaspoons instead of two. Forgive me honey?” Scene fades….

Snigger—now that was funny.
I also noticed that John and Marlena’s condo looks like it’s in an assisted living development.

“Hey, doc”, said he, in his raspy, annoying voice, making those idiotic facial expressions. Jughead.
Mateo, that was hilarious. EX-LAX is what John needs to wipe that contorted look off his face. This must be the most boring couple on TV.
You’re right; the hoopla is almost over. Then what?

Oh-h-h! EX-LAX for John? CeeCee and Mateo, I truly am shocked. Not a comment worthy of you at all. I’m disappointed, that’s all.

Sorry, Nancy. I truly apologize if my comment offended you. I am being very serious. I was catty. I guess it wasn’t a nice joke. I hope you do realize Mateo and I are just having a little fun….perhaps in poor taste, but we are just joshing. Sorry….I won’t do it again. But, you must admit this is another stupid Sami storyline, yes? ‘Nite.

Will never watch Days again have watched as a young girl with
My grandmother and became hooked bc of Bo and hope came
Back only bc ZBo was back! But they could have given grim more story time he is one of the best of days! I will not watch hope with someone else doesn’t work for
me so after 32 years in officially done ! Sad but it’s not the same the fun romance that Bo and hope
Brought to us plus the Amazjng writing of Sheri Anderson well that was the best! As a full time teacher I would dvr but not anymore ! I have no desire to watch heartbroken fan!

The ratings for Days surprised me. Under no circumstances, impending holidays or not, should they be losing viewers right now. They are 3 months in to their much publicized 50th Anniversary and with their big guns returning they should not be held comparable to other shows. The other shows aren’t celebrating a big anniversary with such media hype. I fear the end is coming soon for Days. Their numbers aren’t as great as advertised. They are still not equaling last years viewership in any of the key demos, which is what the network looks at. Gaining viewership from last year in the total viewers category is nice but it is what’s most important. The Bope scenes from this week, including their physical union and Bo’s death, should have brought in the numbers and they didn’t. If fans were as invested they would tune in. I hope they rebound next week but the gloom has dragged on for so long and I know many viewers that have completely tuned out because they aren’t happy with what they are seeing. As a long time viewer that has stuck with Days through everything, I haven’t seen a lot to celebrate.

These ratings don’t shock me at all. I expected DOOL to hit a brick wall at some point. I have watched since 1985 but sadly I tuned out for the final time after Aiden Jennings was killed. That was enough for me. Hope has always been a favorite of mine and I was so enamored with her new pairing. It sickened me that it was totally ruined for Bo’s short return. Closure for Bo and Hope was needed and deserved, but not this way. I thought it was contrived and in bad taste. If Days continues this downward trend, it will be at their own hands. They are driving many fans away with this violence and the needless dismissals of so many well loved characters. I chose to break my Days habit and after a month, I don’t miss it at all. I will curiously follow the ratings to see what happens but I don’t have the strength to welcome all of these new characters reportedly being brought on.

Well said!

this is one of my favorite posts on this thread…

I too am heartsick that DAYS “fired” Aiden … making him dispensible… to Laud Bo and think Kristian Alfonso’ Hope… can strike fire and magic all over again.. with Rafe

no ones arguing that KA’ Hope; had it in spades , the moon, and Love eternal

w/ Bo ; whom she will love for all her life
w/Aiden; ALL the fans of… Hope… waited with baited breath to see the outcome… and it was… love all over again… and heart stirring and you just wanted to envelop Hope… because she’s one of grans jewels. and who doesn’t want Hope happy.

bam! DAYS production goes and snuffs out this NEW blissful romantic couple…

tieing up loose ends and bringing closure is one thing… OK… my dam burst and I cried with the best of them… Peter Reckell cemented in my memory banks… HIS LOVE of Hope and family

as far as Rafe is concerned… i’ve already posted… it’s one thing to look at two of the best looking actors on this show…. – together – ( I think they work well together, and only as that)

it’s one thing to (meh) also… bed together… so be it… but… not as a couple.. especially with Lauren Boles gone… Rafe had magic with that girl… it was a wonderful treat to see them interacting… this would have even helped Rafe… w/ Hope … come across as a happy family.

not only will Rafe not have any thing in common with SORAS Cierra… but I’m certain… Hope and Rafe personality will just not gell… meld … or take hold.

Bring back Aiden….. ( and Eve) and i’ll leave well enough alone !

have to gavel some of your post :

“… If Days continues this downward trend, it will be at their own hands. They are driving many fans away with this violence and the needless dismissals of so many well loved characters. ”

it’s jarring and discontent sets in…. “knowing” all the firings, coming and goings, and all the new hires… to evenly across the board meld all this … with the writing… TOUGH

the Salem Strangler doesnt even bother me…. storywise… except for Will.

of all the vets that have returned… and or putting vets on contract…

last I heard Stephen Nichols is not contract
Mary Beth Evans’ Kayla is on contract… she deserves to be

Judi Evans and Wally Kurth… from newly contract bumped down to recurring… is still a bite… that is duly noted by long time fans of… and a dumbing down of behind the scenes production

firing of Eve, Aiden, Clyde, and Eric… 4 consummate professionals that Fans caught on with… and i’ll wage… STOLED THE SHOW ! ??? where is the justification in that?

MISSING in action… : Paul !?!? YES I will loudly vent… that Sonny should have been recast… or… Priority should have been … in finding a leading man for Paul. Period

so … when one weighs all the restructuring and it all seems so out of touch and not in any way…a meeting of the minds ; ie: the audience

we’ve yet to see Ava, Rafe’s brother, and Phillip… and I don’t know that I care about these three

how could DAYS production honestly think the audience will care… when A list acts have been fired ! ( Eve, Aiden, Clyde, Eric) no recast for Sonny or a love for Paul

the dust is settling… and it’s now all up to the writers…

I can’t’ wait for Daniel, Nicole, and Jennifer to be let go… and OUT

The issue will always be the writing , the quality , acting and athmosphere of all these soaps . The budget constraints cannot justify all this weakness . To cut a long story short short the 80’s and 90’s were great decades of the soaps . The staff that worked on them knew their business and were motivated . i am stunned at how flat the stories are and how predictable they are .

I think ,it’s to much going on in these soaps and no one is getting punished for the wrong thimgs they’ve already done.you’re bring to many people on the shows committing so much wrong til the older crimes don’t get solved, sharon and the doctor, adam ,lan ,victor.billy, victoria, phillis and others.so how do you want us to rate these soaps who got the most people are who get a way with most crimes.you tell me!

The only thing predictable about soaps other than plots are the ratings. Sweeps in Nov especially the first two weeks are jammed packed with content, they inflate the ratings numbers for a bit, then when those plot points are over all the those who just tuned in for the big plot point or reveal leave and the numbers go down again.

There is no shock here, nothing to do with writing, this always happens. The ratings will be low until about mid Jan when soaps start revving up stories for Feb sweeps. As someone pointed out the more telling number is comparing this time with last year, if the core audience for each soap is in place that is all that matters, the viewers that come and go when the mood or story suits them will be lured back by Feb-

meanwhile for the rest of us, prepared to be bored until then, because with holidays coming, soaps know people are busy, so don’t expect them to bring their A game or B game to the table– December is always the dullest month for soaps. Any true soap fan knows this and will not be surprised or disappointed by the lull.

Now Days is all deaths and killings. To me this is overdone, and I look forward to this passing and new storylines and romances to begin. I understand that they are trying to clean house to move forward, but it is too much too quickly. Wiith that said, there have been some scenes in between the killings and deaths that have been better and improved from the past year. So enough with the killings and deaths and on to new storylines and romance, so we can start to see some development and become more invested in the characters and storylines again.

B&B has been a snoozefest lately, I’m bored to tears with this Ivy Thomas Wyatt crap.

Y&R is getting boring baby swapping that was the last straw they drag everything out sounds like writer’s block everything not making sense dnt even watch the dvr I delete it & that is bad.

Loving GH, hating DOOL! What a waste for Days to bring back these characters and sad that they’re calling it their 50th anniversary episodes!

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves Talk Return to DAYS for Doug’s Funeral, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Their Enduring Friendship

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on December 3rd. The story will feature emotional and heart-tugging scenes of Doug Williams funeral and honor his portrayer, the beloved Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th at the age of 98.

While the actors, producers, and crew took a lunch time break to pose for some pictures and speak with the press, they knew they would have to get back to taping the funeral, which was going to make it a tough day, but also cathartic for all who loved Bill Hayes.

Several returns have thus far been announced including; Melissa Reeves reprising her signature role of Jennifer Horton (a part she first played in 1985), and Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux. Reeves had last appeared on the show back in 2021, and she was replaced by Emmy-winner Cady McClain in her absence when Jennifer was in storylines. In real-life, Melissa had moved full-time to Tennessee along with her husband, Scott Reeves (ex-DAYS, GH, Y&R). Now, and as previously reported, Reeves will first appear back on DAYS for the Thanksgiving episodes with the Hortons.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Matt and Melissa during the 15,000th episode celebration to get their take on: being back for these special episodes, how it has been working with and watching Susan Seaforth Hayes portray Julie’s grief over losing Doug, and how they have supported each other through the years. Check out what they shared below.

Melissa, you are back on the set of Days of our Lives for this very emotional and special moment in the series history. How does it feel?

MELISSA: Oh, my goodness. I am honored. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but to be here for Bill. He was like my real-life dance partner. He taught me how to ballroom dance. And to be here for Susan, of course, who’s just been our sweet hero this whole week. We’re just following her lead. She’s just been this incredibly strong example for us in the midst of this trial and season of her life. She is like just lifting us all up with her. It’s been incredible.

I was at Bill Hayes memorial service which was truly incredible and I know at the time you were in Tennessee. It was moving and celebratory of his life, all at the same time.

MELISSA: That’s all I have heard. I have to watch it on You Tube. They said it was just a real celebration of his life and I love that.

Photo: JPI

This must be difficult for Susan Seaforth Hayes depicting the death of Doug, when she is still grieving the loss of her beloved husband. (Susan pictured above with the returning Stephen Schnetzer who plays her on-screen brother, Steve Olson).

MELISSA: I’m sure Susan has those moments at home by herself, but she’s so good at being a leader and leading all of us. We’re following her, you know, and she’s like, “This is how I want to feel today.” And we’re just going along with her, you know? It’s so sweet.

Photo: JPI

How is it to see Matt Ashford again live and in-person?

MELISSA: You know, Matt and I can go years without talking, or seeing each other, and then the minute we see each other we’re chatting away.

MATT: Melissa was out on set doing a scene yesterday on the phone talking to a stage manager; as she was telling some really tough news on the phone. I’m like crying in the background, literally, I’m off-stage crying.

MELISSA: And then we get like back into normal life, and we’re like, okay, “What’s happening? What’s happening with this … or what’s happening with that?”

I had read, Melissa, that you were in touch with Matt about if there night be a possibility for you to reprise your role as Jennifer for these special episodes?

MELISSA: Yes. Well, Matt was like, “Hey! Would you want to come back? “And I was like, “Matt, you know, I would always come back. ”

MATT:  Every time I come here to Days of our Lives, they ask, “Where’s Missy? How’s Missy?” Everybody backstage says, “I miss her.” All of the crew is asking about her and saying, “It would be nice to see Missy. Nothing wrong with you Matt, but …”  They said, “Where is she?” I said, “She wants to come!”

Photo: JPI

There are some beautiful photos of Missy and Bill and Susan thorough the years that I found. It just reminded me of just the deep and entrenched history we all have had with the show, personally and professionally.

MATT: Missy is roughly the age where Francis Reid (ex-Alice Horton) was when she started the show, which is just crazy.

Photo: JPI

I’ve always said Missy was going to be the next generation Alice. Do you feel that Jennifer is the heir apparent matriarch of the Horton family?

MELISSA: Yes. I mean, this has been greatest blessing of my life, and that would be great. I told Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of our Lives) when I was 17 that this show would be my life. Ken always told me, “This is your home,” and I’ve always felt like that.

How have gotten through the scenes watching Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie go through the loss of Doug?

MATT: Susan is bringing her best performance life for her and Bill. I mean, she’s a showbiz baby. She always has been one hundred percent, and she’s doing it for him, and this is who they’ve always been. So, you’re seeing this amazing performance colored by her life. She has her private life as Susan, but she has enough plugged into Julie that she’s done amazing work. The director, producers and writers are giving her room to live in these moments and it’s quite wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Have you already broken down in tears during the taping?

MELISSA: Yesterday, but today’s taping of the actual funeral I think they want us to try and be just more celebratory.

MATT: I mean, it is a beautiful long life for Bill Hayes and his character of Doug Williams, and so it will be about that. Then, you get a bunch of us together in the church pews, and there’s going to be hijinks.

MELISSA: We all have been through the waves of grief. You have that awful cry and then all of a sudden you feel okay.  There are those family situations we are portraying where you’re like, “What do we do? What do we do now? You know, no one knows what to do. But, it’s so sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the scenes all turn out.

So, are you glad that Matt and Melissa are back for the 15K episode and Doug’s funeral? From what we can tell, it’s going to be quite an emotional journey for Days of our Lives fans, and especially the performance of Susan Seaforth Hayes,

Ron Carlivati Talks on Decision to Make Days of our Lives 15000th Episode About Doug’s Funeral, and Previews Chances for WGA Award

This week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode. In of it itself, that is an incredible accomplishment for the long-running soap opera currently streaming on Peacock.

However, this on set gathering was a bit different. Though the show is celebrating their achievement, they are also in the middle of taping scenes surrounding the death and the funeral of Doug Williams, played by the late Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th of this year at the age of 98.

As previously revealed many longtime favorites are back to honor Bill and the character of Doug including: Gloria Loring (Liz), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Matthew Ashford (Jack), Maree Cheatham (Marie), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Stephen Schnetzer (Steve) to name but a few.

Michael Fairman TV was in attendance and spoke with Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati to gain some insight into how the 15,000 episode was crafted and the decision to honor the character of Doug Williams and Bill Hayes as its epicenter. In addition, Ron weighed-in on this Sunday’s April 14th WGA (Writers Guild of America) Awards, where he and his writing team are facing off with General Hospital for the daytime drama prize. Here’s what Ron shared below.

Was this your idea to make the 15,000th episode centered around Doug’s funeral and passing?

RON: It was. When you’re looking at it, and laying out the calendar for the whole year and you see 15,000 is coming up, we’re like, “What are we going to do?” And then, we got the news that Bill had passed away and something kind of clicked. I was like, “We should honor Doug on that show.” So then, we started to kind of build around that … when does he pass away? How does he pass away? Who could come back? You know, it’s a lot.  I’m very pleased with the returns that we got as there’s so much that you could do. We wanted everybody we could get. So, we put together a wish list and Janet Drucker (co-executive producer, Days of our Lives) made it happen.

Photo: JPI

You have Melissa Reeves back as Jennifer, when the role was last played by Cady McClain. What has it meant to have Missy back for these shows?

RON: It was so nice to see Missy Reeves. I think Cady has done such a good job, but on the 15,000th episode to see Missy as Jennifer, it’s a big deal. So having her was great, and overall, the milestone was a big undertaking, because you want to live up to it. You want the 15,000th episode to be good. Now, it has a lot of real emotion that you’re playing. because for the cast and the crew they’re honoring Bill Hayes just as much as we’re honoring Doug Williams.

Photo: JPI

Was it hard for you and the team to write this episode?

RON: Yes. I’ll tell you why it was hard to write.  When I wrote, for example, Asa’s (Phillip Carey) death on One Life to Live or Victor’s (John Aniston) on DAYS, Asa is a different type of character. Like, you could have characters going, “Oh! I’m glad he is dead.” You could have different points of view, but with Doug, you’re not having that. Every person loves this man. No one had a bad relationship with him. So, you’re challenge as a writer is how do you make it that not everybody’s saying the same thing and doing the same thing. And so, we tried to find ways to make the episode about all the familial relationships and yet, how do you make it about Doug and yet broaden the scope.

Photo: JPI

I had spoken to Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), a week after Bill’s memorial, for an interview. She said that she felt very fortunate that you did include her on discussions of how you would tackle Doug’s passing. How did that conversation go?

RON: First, I attended Bill’s funeral, which was incredible. I said to so many people it was an emotional service, but it was hard to be sad at this. The guy had an incredible life and it was an incredible celebration. And so, you’re sitting there watching this knowing that you now have to write something similar. And how do you write something that lives up to what you just witnessed? I wanted to talk to Susan to get her thoughts about, you know, how much do you want this to be about keeping Bill separate from Doug. How comfortable are you sharing your grief. She was incredible to talk to. It was a great chat.

You’re in the middle of taping these major scenes for the 15,000 episode to air in December. How do you think it’s going? Have you seen any of the scenes?

RON:  I haven’t seeing anything. I mean, we were still making changes to the script up till this morning!

Photo: JPI

The Writers Guild Awards are this Sunday, April 14th and once again this year there are two daytime drama nominees, General Hospital and Days of our Lives. How are you feeling about your chances this year?

RON: It is often just GH and us in the category. I’ve won three years in a row, so I’m kind of feeling like it’s their turn.

Photo: JPI

What episodes did you submit for contention? If I recall, they had to do with Victor’s memorial.

RON: The episodes we submitted were centered around Victor’s funeral. I think one has story with Vivian (Louise Sorel). We had some fun stuff, we had some emotional stuff at Victor’s death, and I am pretty sure that our submission was three episodes right around that time.

Did you make the decision to go with those episodes because there was a mix of humor and drama?

RON: I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, then there’s Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s crashing the reading of the will. So, we had a lot of fun and it’s hard sometimes to pick three that tell a story, as opposed to submitting for the Daytime Emmys, where the writing team only submits two shows. So, we shall see how it goes on Sunday.
