RATINGS: General Hospital Has Stellar Week! Gains In Major Demos & Total Viewers!

Courtesy/ABC

Port Charles is the place to visit these days if you are thinking about what to watch in the afternoon, or on SOAPnet (if you still get it in your city), or, on your DVR’s!  In the latest ratings for the week of October 1st through October 5th, GH delivered it’s highest numbers of total viewers since late March of 2011!

By the numbers, General Hospital added +193,000 viewers for the ratings period bringing its total viewers to +2,714,000!  In the key demos GH did extremely well too!  In Women 18-49, GH added +109,000 viewers and gained in the ratings share for the demographic as well! GH was also number one in  Women 18-34 adding another + 49,000, and that rating share was up too.  Looks like viewers were into the Sonny and Kate/Connie wedding twists and turns, and the fallout involving many residents of Port Chuck!

The only other soap to add total viewers for the ratings week was Days of our Lives which had a gain of +33,000 bringing their total to 2,399,000.  However DAYS is not doing well with the key Women 18-34 demo.  Once again it tied a new series low!

As per usual, The Young and the Restless remained in the number one slot, even though they dipped in total viewers as Nikki and Victor slept together, Sharon decided to sue Victor for abandonment and then is arrested! Elsewhere, Christine and Danny made love!  The Bold and the Beautiful kept its hold on the number two slot, but like Y&R, lost total viewers for the week.   B&B lost the most viewers for the ratings period  -79,000.   You can view the entire ratings picture via Soap Opera Network here!

So soapers, what do you think of GH’s performance in the ratings?  And, as its time for you to be our weekly Soap Opera Programming Executive Armchair Quarterback, what would you do to improve each of the four soaps ratings? What is working? What isn’t? Weigh-in!

fantastic news. Hope this keeps up.

General Hospital is the soap opera to watch! Excellent writing and superb cast. Its a must see for all ages! I have watched this show ever since I was in high school in the late sixties! Love the new ensemble cast feel!

I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GH is on fire these days! With the return of Duke and an end finally coming to the baby switch storyline plus the promise in sight of Robin finally being rescured, GH is slicker and faster paced with lots of intriguing characters both old and new. However it is time to end the dragged out Kate/Connie saga. Glad it has been getting less airtime. I am curious to see how Steve Burton exits-is GH going to recast or do some presumed death story? I am wondering and loving how GH is keeping stories these days more under wraps. I also am eager to see Sean Kenan back on the show in whatever capacity. I also believe more vets will be back soon such as Lucy, Laura, Scott, etc over time and this regime seems the one to do justice to them. Another return I am hopeful for is the Nurses Ball. I like this GH better than I have in years and am hopeful with improvement like this steadily on the rise, it will survive past its 50th anniversary.

Yep, I agree with you!

I’m sure that in large part is due to Ron Carlivati’s great writing and an ensemble feel to the show now!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am wild about GH. Edge of my seat excitement!! Wtg writers and actors. You all are slappin the ole bull on the horns. Love it!!!! Now get Tea on permantely and give our kassie a contract and swing Vicki and Clint and Nigel and Bo and Nora and Natalie as
well and I will be in hog Heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ME TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree!!

I am LOVING GH these days! The ensemble feel, the great soapy storylines, the terrific acting, and what I love most? Out of all of the soaps, it seems the most balanced these days! I am so impressed and I am so happy others seem to be too. Take that, ABC! lol.

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think with the new writing team in place at Y& R we should expect their numbers to go up. Already two days into the new regime and the pace and the quality of the writing has gone up. When Chelsea lost the baby after the car accident I finally saw a new side to that character– human. And when Adam very quietly tells Nick his daughter killed his son it send chills down my spine. The acting has gotten better too, as if the actors are happy to finally have something decent to perform. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. So I would be surprise if the ratings don’t go up for this show.

Yeah Mary in the words of Jesse Pinkham from Breaking Bad “Yo Bitches we are coming back.” LOL

The highest rating since Black Thursday for GH-what will the Cartini haters say now-and Days had another solid week…great job everyone

I know a lot of the original GH fans were getting upset by the influx of actors and cast from OLTL, but hearing this, I don’t know how they can possibly complain. The show is great right now. Hopefully it will continue and prove all the naysayers wrong!

I agree with you…I AM A OLTL FAN TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s great news! Lets think about who was on this week? Duke, Anna, Sam, Jason, Heather, Todd … great storylines!! Loved today’s eppy. Keep it up GH!!

GH IS SMOKIN HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GH and DAYS are both great these days….Here is how I think the ratings should be:
1. GH
2. DAYS
3. Y&R
4. B&B

I go with that…..

Sorry, PGP, Days is NOT great. Most long-time viewers know this. GH is doing much better. Please stop the “my soap is better than your soap” mentality. This doesn’t help soaps, it only serves to divide soap viewers. That is one of the things killing soaps and endangering the last 4 remaining soaps. Y&R is improving. B&B is in an unusually great place: Legendary actress Susan Flannery is retiring and her iconic character Stephanie Forrester is dying of cancer. B&B will soar throughout 2012 and possibly beyond. All soaps should be bringing their A-game. Days needs to step it up!

Mattsplace is right, Days sucks now. EJ is losing his balls YET AGAIN to a woman who doesn’t love him, Sami keeps going from EJ to Rafe to Lucas, Nicole is turning into a wimp, Jennifer has become a total cu**, Daniel is clueless, Bo is leaving, Chad is becoming a basta**, and Nicole’s baby is dead AGAIN! Not to mention how the veterans are barely shown anymore. The only thing gaining ratings on Days are WilSon and Nabi.

Days is getting better, but still needs work

Days has gotten a lot better. I would just prefer not to see the same character 5x a week. Hope needs a story! Would be great if Kayla had a story! Enough of three people fighting after Sami! Too much whiny Nicole. What do they all see in Daniel? He’s such a wuss.

i agree ces totally, too much sami, sami, sami, three men fighting over her
no wonder viewers are turning off, whiny nicole too and its so boring
at least with stefano back with kristen i will tune back in

but enough of sami, and she is cannot act thats just my opinion and has been
for yrs.

Totally agree Sarah! I’m glad Kristen is returning too. Hopefully the show can shift back to characters we want to see. This Sami stuff reminds me of when it became the Carly “show” years ago. Balance is all I’m asking for 🙂

I’ve been a GH fan for 17 years, and I’m enjoying the show more now than I have in years. For the longest time, it felt like a chore to watch every week, but now it’s something I look forward to. Frank Valentini, Ron Carlivati and their team have done an excellent job turning the show around.

They’ve revitalized some long time GH characters that were stale and boring, they’ve brought back some fan favorites, the latest being Duke Lavery played by the wonderful Ian Buchanan, and the OLTL characters that were brought over have fit in very nicely with the GH family.

It’s great to see GH doing well again heading into the 50th Anniversary next year!

I agree. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE GH again!!!! It’s NOT the SONNY show any more!!!! Great old and new characters. Creative writing !!! I would love to see Blair, Vicki, and Bo added to the cast. Love Joe Jr. and Tracy and Ellie and Spinelli!!!

Go GH. This news is awesome.

YEH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With all due respect, the numbers for this week were tuning in to watch Sonny and Kate/Connies
weddings. There’s never a dull moment at one of Sonny’s weddings. His last wedding his bride was ” blown up” right before his eyes. Of course that was fake because she was actually “just” kidnapped ;-). At his last wedding to Kate, she got shot at the alter, literally. The only OLTL transplant at the wedding was Starr who is dating Michael, Sonny’s son. Her purpose there was one measley bitch slap to Kate’s alter who she wrongly concludes killed her fiance & child. Otherwise, it was an all GH cast.

agree totally sonny carries the show no matter what maurice bernard is hot
and awesome but i love steve burton and will miss him everyday have been
watching everyday for 22 yrs and earlier yrs when i was in school when i could
catch gh but the ratings up GH cast the reason why

but steve burton will be missed everyday and no recast will ever work

no way, i do wish robin would come back

I also agree, and I think the build up of Sam getting her baby back is hel[ping the ratings, and for long time fans, the anticipation of SB leaving and Ian Buchanon returning. I do not think it has anything to do with the OLTL characters like Suzie said we only saw Starr at the wedding which her storyline is a waste. No need for the other two as they both hate Sonny.

The next month are going to be very moving on the show.

Days’ new writers have been a bust. They could write a book on how to destroy a soap. So much bored with Day. I hope they thin of a way to wake viewer up!

I feel for you shannon. Days used to be one of the most exciting shows around. There was never a dull moment in Salem. Now everyday I watch Days I fall asleep. On the plus side it is great to get a nap, on the negative side this show needs some solid direction and storytelling soon or I might skip the show and go straight for the nap

Oye! it pains me… to say any thing… “negative”… and I have to admit… DAYS isn’t up to par…. as they all were… must see.

HOWEVER: I got butterflies in my stomach…. anticipating… Kristen’s shenanigans, mayhem, and plot twists… with Stefano… and Lady Marlena.

I don’t care for… Nicole’s story… she so deserved her baby….”why can’t I ever hold you”.. ??? that’s too much. a plot twist for a story for Jenn.

isn’t it great to see kayla in the hospital….. the story with mom Caroline will be good… to see the Brady’s – Kayla and Bo… rally around Mum.

I couldn’t agree more…. with all the posters…. DAYS should never have stopped writing for team EJ and Will.

DAYS should never have broken up EJole, in my opinion, because that made EJ available for Sami to breathe loudly on, and kept her revolving from EJ to Lucas and back to Rafe. I like that Stefano and Kristen are coming back, I love Will and Sonny, and I also love Gabi and Nick together. But where is Lucas? Can we get him a storyline besides him always talking to Will and Sami? I hate the “Days of Sami’s revolving Vajayjay”, and although I loathed MarDar, I can’t stand TomSell either!

After Friday’s cliffhanger I actually told my husband I wish we could skip the weekend. How insane is that? I live for weekends so I can sleep in and relax. GH is so exciting now it’s amazing and I’m loving every minute of it.

Great Job GH writers, cast and crew.

Loving every minute also!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ha! I agree :))

I strongly think that this ratings boost for GH will only be temporary and is only due to longtime fans wanting to see Steve Burton’s upcoming exit from the show. After all, Jason has been a central, popular character for 20+ years. Just like AMC and OLTL saw ratings rise for/near their finales and after the cancellation announcements, I think that many people are only tuning in to see Steve’s farewell. Once Steve leaves, I predict that the vast majority of his fans will leave too and the ratings will drop right back down.

The ReRon/Cartooni fanny-kissers on boards like this (nothing more than a vocal, tiny minority no matter what they say) are getting way too full of themselves about GH being so good right now, LOL. Since when does “I love GH and it’s on fire right now” translate into “Since I love GH right now, I guarantee that every other person on earth is loving it too” ? It does not.

Ho hum-just another excuse to push your anti-soap agenda. The numbers don’t lie. Get over yourself

@Troy, If you can’t tolerate anyone with a slightly negative opinion on GH and a different viewpoint than yourself, then stop whining like a crybaby, go somewhere else, and get a life. This is a public board and a free country, and I’m perfectly entitled to express my honest thoughts on GH without being bullied and berated by you.

Regardless of what you think, ReRon and Frank’s writing style for GH is NOT everyone’s cup of tea, far from it. Take my word- these vocal commenters bowing down to them and saying that the show is so wonderful right now are actually in the extreme minority. What would you suggest I do- sit down, keep quiet and tolerate any crap they write, produce, and recycle merely so the show can stay on the air? Sorry pal, it does not work that way. There are only so many hours in the day, and I have only a limited number of hours available when I can watch TV. If a show (soap opera or not) fails to hold my interest, there are a million other things I can watch or do with my time. You’re the one who sorely needs to get over yourself and grow up.

@Dan, Let me see if I have this right- If everyone in YOUR life loves GH, that must mean that every person in the country loves it. Yeah, right. Whatever.

And in the big picture, only a relatively small sampling of people post comments about the show on Facebook, Twitter, fan/message boards, etc. Those remarks do not clearly represent the opinions of everyone. Generally, the only people who take time to comment about the show in those places are rabid, cheerleader fans of show. Take my word- there is a very large silent MAJORITY out there that is not at all fond of what the overrated Cartooni have done to GH.

For crying out loud, GH is just a TV show. Yes, you and others may like the show now and have every right to convey that, but also many don’t. Those people should be allowed to fully express themselves without being stepped on too. Different strokes for different folks. Why is that so hard for you to accept? If you didn’t know better, you’d think I’m insulting an actual person or family member. Why is it so hard for people like you to understand that not everyone cares for the show now?

@Chris: As I said in my first post, you are entitled to your opinion on GH, and you’re obviously entitled to express that here. I don’t recall anyone saying anything different. I’m also entitled to disagree with your opinion, and that’s all this is. A difference of opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.

Along those lines I’m curious about something. If you don’t like GH now, did you like it better during the Phelps/Guza regime, or when did you like it? And what would you like to see from Valentini and Carlivati that they’re not doing now?

agree totally if you dont support the soaps we will lose all of them

yeah GH ratings are up, but steve burton will be missed but the show must
go on and we must support our soaps not matter what

@Chris, I completely agree this boost in ratings has more to do with Steve Burton leaving the show than Cartini. For cying out loud people, GH lost viewers every week in September except one. How does that translate into “GH is on fire”??? Oh wait, I forgot, when GH loses viewers it’s the ratings system at fault, but when they gain a few back, it’s all because of Frank and Ron, smh.

@Chris: Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if you’re not digging GH, that’s your prerogative. But you’re wrong when you say that the people that are liking GH are in the minority. It’s the people like you that aren’t liking the show that are in the minority. The very small minority.

Just take a quick, unscientific look at the comments on Facebook, Twitter, ask friends or family in your own life that might happen to watch GH. I don’t know anyone in my life that watches GH that isn’t enjoying it these days.

As far as people tuning in for Steve Burton’s exit, that might be true for a small number of people. But the majority of the viewers, that don’t track every coming and going on the internet, have no idea that he’s leaving. So I would suggest that is having a very minimal affect on the ratings.

The ratings are up cause the show has been good. They peaked a lot of stories last week, and people tuned in. That’s generally how it works.

The rating boost is due to excellent writing and story. Steve Burton’s departure, which sucks, will not cause a drop in ratings at all. The stories Frank is creating will keep viewers watching. GH benefited greatly by the addition of OLTL characters, the ratings speak to that affect. As soap fans and a lover of the previous cancelled shows, GH can benefit from more additions.

It’s a hospital for crying out loud. Anna was married to David Hayward on All My Children. His character would be a better addition than the OLTL characters (though I love them greatly). David H has the right blend of devious, likeability and you love to hate him. He would work great with Anna, Sonny, Alexis, hell anyone on GH. Let’s push to bring David Hayward to the canvass and bring the hospital up to the standard of malpractice that all hospitals aspire to on daytime.

Oh, Lucy Coe needs to return too!

That’s a very negative comment !!!!!!!!!!!! On 1/13 at 6:48 A.M… Blah! Blah! Blah! It sounds like to me you want the ratings of GH to Flop!!!!! I support Gh & have no negative comments …….. There will be more good stories to come..We have to support the only soap left on abc… Isn’t that what it is all about….

Yep, we need to support these shows because without them we’re left with talk shows and reality TV junk. Giving some criticism is okay because storytelling could be better, but they’re trying and they can’t fix it overnight! Be glad they are still on the air 🙂

What IS NOT TO LIKE about GH right now? What? Forget who is writing it. What IS NOT TO LIKE? It is the best it has been in years, more balanced stories, more balanced airtime for our favorite characters-humor mixed with mystery mixed with romance-old faves, i.e. Monica & Tracy sparring-good hospital stuff, I mean seriously? To the people who are not loving GH right now, WHY NOT? What do you want to see? I really wonder.

yea susan right on we have to support GH with or without steve wish he would
stay but understand his reason for leaving

GH rocks!! so we need to support all soaps or we will lose them

I agree with you gloria….I like all the stories too & the stories have defintely improved……..I can’t undrestand what’s not to like !!!! Well I will continue to support GH all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am really enjoying GH & can’t wait to see what happens next…….I think the storytelling is doing so much better lately……And not much need for improvement……….I really like watching….I have no complaints of any kind ……………..GH has come a long way!!!!!!!!!

Some of the commenters on this site and others (and the soap sites themselves) are so desperate for any shred of semi-decent news about GH’s ratings that they’re getting a little too full of themselves, IMO.

The truth is that ABC is not going to publicly reveal which way they’re leaning yet on GH’s fate in any press release, and won’t base their ultimate decision on whether or not GH will live on past its 50th anniversary on only 1 or 2 weeks of ratings.

The show almost certainly has to show consistent growth in the key demos over a period of many weeks- not up 1 week, down the next 2 or 3 weeks. That won’t cut it at this point, in all likelihood. It needs to sustain these added people as regular everyday viewers, not those who just pop in and out for special stunts, and keep building week after week. Quite frankly, I just don’t think that the show is capable of doing that any longer. And remember that GH is much more expensive to produce than a talk show, game show, etc. Like it or not, that is a major factor in this whole situation. It’s most likely all going to come down to the ad revenue/profit-loss data and no one on the outside has any knowledge of that financial info except ABC/Disney executives/employees/shareholders themselves. (btw, I have no affiliation at all to anything ABC/Disney- I’m merely making honest comments/observations.)

Expensive or not to make talk/info/cooking shows don’t work….You have to have a positive attitude……All soaps are expensive to make…And the commercials help
pay for them……Look the revolution was cancelled & The Chew is on it’s last leg…And the Steve Harvey show comes on after GH where I live & that show is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PATHETIC…..And should be cancelled ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This how I feel on the subject…

If “talk/info/cooking shows don’t work”, then how come when you look down the list of daytime ratings in syndication and on the networks, it proves the exact opposite?Comments like this just prove what a large disconnect there is between what bitter soap fans watch and what the large majority of daytime viewers are watching these days.

And sorry to disappoint you, but the reality is that The Chew is not “on its last leg” and Steve Harvey’s program is considered a hit so far and looks like it’ll be around for a while.

The Chew was deperate to have GH stars on that week. Anyway A lot of soap fans don’t like The Chew ..There were a lot of comments on this site to say so..And Steve Harvey is an insut to intelligence..I watched for about five minutes
and is garbage to me..Not interested in anything that discuss….And it such stupid & siily stuff….That’s something I wouldn’t look forward to seeing everyday…Can’t identify with that kind of show………… There is no DRAMA there or emotion, feelings like the SOAPS….You forgot about The Revolution (GONE)….Give it time these shows will end up on the chopping block. This soap fan will never watch these shows !!!!!!!!!!!! I support GH all the way !!!!!!!!!!!

yea susan you think like me no more talk show, cooking shows

they are boring I support GH all the way!!!

I am loving GH right now!!! I am so sad Jason is leaving, with the truth coming out about SAMs baby! I really hope Heather didn’t fall over with the baby cause it sure looks like that! I just don’t see how GH will still be soo good without Jason! I love the OLTL characters too! I was very upset when abc took AMC and OLTL off for the Chew and the other stupid show that ended up being canceled.

You mean the Revolution? LOL I wish they brought back AMC at least.

GH has been on fire!!! Bring back more GH characters, not OLTL characters!!

A little of both for me..I am a OLTL fan………..

Yep, me too.

I’m a long time GH viewer and believe the show has the potential to be as big as it was in its hey day (the 80′s). I believe the key ingrediant is giving the fans what they want (you can tease, but in the end, feed the fans). I give you 5 storylines that I believe would be must watch television.

1) Duke has recreated himself and wields real power (political and financial) and this collides with Sonny’s idea of power (illegal/Mafia). Side bar- Duke sees in Sonny what he would have been if he hadn’t left the mob influence.

2) Kate/Connie receive long term mental health care and she (Connie) makes friends with Heather Webber who is once again institutionalized. Sidebar- Storyline takes place in the mental health facility.

3) Laura now a successful business woman in Europe (the new cosmetic/fashion queen) returns to Port Charles and convinces Lulu (her daughter) and Kristina to be the newest faces in the fashion industry (the two of them become rivals. Sidebar – Laura has secretly joined the WSB (World Security Bureau) with the mandate to kill Victor Cassadine (he’s back!)

4) A.J. & Tracy Quartermine team with Michael Corrinthos and the 3 are running the family business. Sidebar – their business interest collides against that of Todd & Carly Mannings (yeah they get married).

5) Shawn/Alexis, Mac/Felicia shaperone a high school field trip oversees where both T.J. & Molly are abducted.

Who Leaves = Johnny, Spinelli, Maxie, Olivia, Trey & Joe Jr.

Each of the characters below could be tied into one of the 5 plot devices.

Who Stays = Anna, Patrick, Robin (a new actress if Kimberly M. doesn’t resign), Sam, John, Dante, Steve, Monica, Star & Luke

Who Joins = Victor Lord (OLTL), Tea (OLTL), Erica Kane (AMC), Robert & Holly Scorpio (yeah they’re married too!)

So this is my ideal storylines, but I really believe each would give the actors a chance to shine while keeping things unpredicable and fresh.

Todd and Carly Manning? The thought make my stomach turn. I pray that never happens. But then, I’d probably tune out long before they made it to the altar.

Ewingoil you are a genius! I love your ideas!

GH had a good week. Days did NOT have a good week. Tying a series low in a key demo, is NOT good. Not good at all. Days rebooted to the past. The return of Kristen may help, BUT the promo where she appears to be staling/kidnapping John Black is not looking too promising. Days writers need to “wow” us — and soon. B&B is great right now and only going to get better, with Ridge abandoning FC and the death of the legendary Stephanie Forrester, B&B is in a renaissance period and will be for at least the remainder of 2012. Y&R has a new writer and should be improving more and more as the new HW “burns off” the stories of the former HW. BTW With only 4 soaps left, the “my soap is better than your soap” mentality is really not helping save the remaining soaps. I support all of the final 4 soaps continuing. Sour grapes only hurt ALL of the remaining soaps. JMO

Agree with Days. It may have gained viewers, but Days is still in last place, and sucks right now. I don’t even watch anymore, I just read the recaps.

What about HEATHER FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Tea ………………There will be more good stories on GH even with Burton’s exit….

Glad GH has improved ratings but Sonny’s last real wedding to Brenda was the best. This storyline is dragging him way down and I am so glad the wedding didn’t happen. Sonny needs to be single and then get Brenda back!

yes metome brenda and sonny belong together period and look forward to her
return he needs to dump kate/connie and look for this true love brenda

You really want to pair Anna up with somebody make it John McBain as far as I am concerned they have the most smoldering chemistry so throw those two has beens over and pair her up with John.

I will continue to watch and support Y&R, B&B and Days, just as I did AMC & OLTL before they ended. But I will not watch or support OLTL again in any way, shape or form, not even if it means I had to say goodbye to my favorite soap GH. I don’t feel bad or guilty about it either. If and when they stop trying to bring OLTL back to life on top of GH, then I will gladly come back to GH, otherwise, as far as I’m concerned, all the ABC soaps are already cancelled. I still enjoy soaps and look forward to watching the changes to Y&R and Days. Oh, and I don’t know anyone in my circle of family and friends who are still watching GH, most have switched over to B&B, even my 80 year old mother.

sorry sour grapes GH is great, i support all soaps that are left on air

B&B is all about steffy, liam and hope BORING!!!! but i still watch

maybe you should give GH a chance to make it just my opinon

I cringe whenever I think about supporting GH just because it’s one of the last soaps, if it means sacrificing what is GH at the same time. I’ve been watching GH, the one I knew and loved, slowly disintegrate before my eyes, into a vessel for OLTL characters and stories.

I’m already tired of the comparisons and references to how “Todd did this on OLTL too,” or “Vikki did this with her DID also”. This is supposed to be GH. Sure it combines some GH characters , but the tone, the style, the writing, even the lighting are reminiscent of OLTL and I say if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it’s…going to be a duck.

I would love to see the writers actually writing for GH and then moving their OLTL characters into GH’s style, instead of the other way around and as a long time GH fan, there is not much about GH that I am liking right now.

Interesting that when GH’s ratings go up a bit, it’s always because Ron and Frank are doing a great job, LOL. But when GH’s ratings go down (the more frequent occurrence), it’s always due to the ratings system being antiquated. Yeah, that’s the reason- NOT.

hmmm… being from Canada, the ratings never mean much here, but i will say that i watch GH commercial free on Youtube. Someone has created this page called “the role of OLTL is now being played by GH” Everyday by 3pm, that day HD version of GH is posted… and this site get about 40,000 views everyday, which I am sure are never counted in any rating system.

One thing is for sure, with all the different ways to watch a TV show now a days, no rating system can be true.

GH just gets better!

As previously reported, a show spokesperson for Days of our Lives shared that the episodes submitted for the competition were #14663, #14678 & #14679, and mostly centered around the death, and the funeral of Victor Kiriakis played by the late John Aniston.

This week, DAYS head scribe, Ron Carlivati, confirmed that, and told Michael Fairman TV on the decision of the scripts the team submitted: “I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, and then there was Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s (Louise Sorel) crashing the reading of the will.”

You can follow along with the live updated list of all the winners from tonight’s WGA ceremonies here.

Michael Fairman TV will have more on DAYS WGA Award win as it becomes available.

Days Of Our Lives

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves Talk Return to DAYS for Doug’s Funeral, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Their Enduring Friendship

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on December 3rd. The story will feature emotional and heart-tugging scenes of Doug Williams funeral and honor his portrayer, the beloved Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th at the age of 98.

While the actors, producers, and crew took a lunch time break to pose for some pictures and speak with the press, they knew they would have to get back to taping the funeral, which was going to make it a tough day, but also cathartic for all who loved Bill Hayes.

Several returns have thus far been announced including; Melissa Reeves reprising her signature role of Jennifer Horton (a part she first played in 1985), and Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux. Reeves had last appeared on the show back in 2021, and she was replaced by Emmy-winner Cady McClain in her absence when Jennifer was in storylines. In real-life, Melissa had moved full-time to Tennessee along with her husband, Scott Reeves (ex-DAYS, GH, Y&R). Now, and as previously reported, Reeves will first appear back on DAYS for the Thanksgiving episodes with the Hortons.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Matt and Melissa during the 15,000th episode celebration to get their take on: being back for these special episodes, how it has been working with and watching Susan Seaforth Hayes portray Julie’s grief over losing Doug, and how they have supported each other through the years. Check out what they shared below.

Melissa, you are back on the set of Days of our Lives for this very emotional and special moment in the series history. How does it feel?

MELISSA: Oh, my goodness. I am honored. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but to be here for Bill. He was like my real-life dance partner. He taught me how to ballroom dance. And to be here for Susan, of course, who’s just been our sweet hero this whole week. We’re just following her lead. She’s just been this incredibly strong example for us in the midst of this trial and season of her life. She is like just lifting us all up with her. It’s been incredible.

I was at Bill Hayes memorial service which was truly incredible and I know at the time you were in Tennessee. It was moving and celebratory of his life, all at the same time.

MELISSA: That’s all I have heard. I have to watch it on You Tube. They said it was just a real celebration of his life and I love that.

This must be difficult for Susan Seaforth Hayes depicting the death of Doug, when she is still grieving the loss of her beloved husband. (Susan pictured above with the returning Stephen Schnetzer who plays her on-screen brother, Steve Olson).

MELISSA: I’m sure Susan has those moments at home by herself, but she’s so good at being a leader and leading all of us. We’re following her, you know, and she’s like, “This is how I want to feel today.” And we’re just going along with her, you know? It’s so sweet.

How is it to see Matt Ashford again live and in-person?

MELISSA: You know, Matt and I can go years without talking, or seeing each other, and then the minute we see each other we’re chatting away.

MATT: Melissa was out on set doing a scene yesterday on the phone talking to a stage manager; as she was telling some really tough news on the phone. I’m like crying in the background, literally, I’m off-stage crying.

MELISSA: And then we get like back into normal life, and we’re like, okay, “What’s happening? What’s happening with this … or what’s happening with that?”

I had read, Melissa, that you were in touch with Matt about if there night be a possibility for you to reprise your role as Jennifer for these special episodes?

MELISSA: Yes. Well, Matt was like, “Hey! Would you want to come back? “And I was like, “Matt, you know, I would always come back. ”

MATT:  Every time I come here to Days of our Lives, they ask, “Where’s Missy? How’s Missy?” Everybody backstage says, “I miss her.” All of the crew is asking about her and saying, “It would be nice to see Missy. Nothing wrong with you Matt, but …”  They said, “Where is she?” I said, “She wants to come!”

There are some beautiful photos of Missy and Bill and Susan thorough the years that I found. It just reminded me of just the deep and entrenched history we all have had with the show, personally and professionally.

MATT: Missy is roughly the age where Francis Reid (ex-Alice Horton) was when she started the show, which is just crazy.

I’ve always said Missy was going to be the next generation Alice. Do you feel that Jennifer is the heir apparent matriarch of the Horton family?

MELISSA: Yes. I mean, this has been greatest blessing of my life, and that would be great. I told Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of our Lives) when I was 17 that this show would be my life. Ken always told me, “This is your home,” and I’ve always felt like that.

How have gotten through the scenes watching Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie go through the loss of Doug?

MATT: Susan is bringing her best performance life for her and Bill. I mean, she’s a showbiz baby. She always has been one hundred percent, and she’s doing it for him, and this is who they’ve always been. So, you’re seeing this amazing performance colored by her life. She has her private life as Susan, but she has enough plugged into Julie that she’s done amazing work. The director, producers and writers are giving her room to live in these moments and it’s quite wonderful.

Have you already broken down in tears during the taping?

MELISSA: Yesterday, but today’s taping of the actual funeral I think they want us to try and be just more celebratory.

MATT: I mean, it is a beautiful long life for Bill Hayes and his character of Doug Williams, and so it will be about that. Then, you get a bunch of us together in the church pews, and there’s going to be hijinks.

MELISSA: We all have been through the waves of grief. You have that awful cry and then all of a sudden you feel okay.  There are those family situations we are portraying where you’re like, “What do we do? What do we do now? You know, no one knows what to do. But, it’s so sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the scenes all turn out.

So, are you glad that Matt and Melissa are back for the 15K episode and Doug’s funeral? From what we can tell, it’s going to be quite an emotional journey for Days of our Lives fans, and especially the performance of Susan Seaforth Hayes,

Days Of Our Lives

Ron Carlivati Talks on Decision to Make Days of our Lives 15000th Episode About Doug’s Funeral, and Previews Chances for WGA Award

This week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode. In of it itself, that is an incredible accomplishment for the long-running soap opera currently streaming on Peacock.

However, this on set gathering was a bit different. Though the show is celebrating their achievement, they are also in the middle of taping scenes surrounding the death and the funeral of Doug Williams, played by the late Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th of this year at the age of 98.

As previously revealed many longtime favorites are back to honor Bill and the character of Doug including: Gloria Loring (Liz), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Matthew Ashford (Jack), Maree Cheatham (Marie), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Stephen Schnetzer (Steve) to name but a few.

Michael Fairman TV was in attendance and spoke with Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati to gain some insight into how the 15,000 episode was crafted and the decision to honor the character of Doug Williams and Bill Hayes as its epicenter. In addition, Ron weighed-in on this Sunday’s April 14th WGA (Writers Guild of America) Awards, where he and his writing team are facing off with General Hospital for the daytime drama prize. Here’s what Ron shared below.

Was this your idea to make the 15,000th episode centered around Doug’s funeral and passing?

RON: It was. When you’re looking at it, and laying out the calendar for the whole year and you see 15,000 is coming up, we’re like, “What are we going to do?” And then, we got the news that Bill had passed away and something kind of clicked. I was like, “We should honor Doug on that show.” So then, we started to kind of build around that … when does he pass away? How does he pass away? Who could come back? You know, it’s a lot.  I’m very pleased with the returns that we got as there’s so much that you could do. We wanted everybody we could get. So, we put together a wish list and Janet Drucker (co-executive producer, Days of our Lives) made it happen.

You have Melissa Reeves back as Jennifer, when the role was last played by Cady McClain. What has it meant to have Missy back for these shows?

RON: It was so nice to see Missy Reeves. I think Cady has done such a good job, but on the 15,000th episode to see Missy as Jennifer, it’s a big deal. So having her was great, and overall, the milestone was a big undertaking, because you want to live up to it. You want the 15,000th episode to be good. Now, it has a lot of real emotion that you’re playing. because for the cast and the crew they’re honoring Bill Hayes just as much as we’re honoring Doug Williams.

Was it hard for you and the team to write this episode?

RON: Yes. I’ll tell you why it was hard to write.  When I wrote, for example, Asa’s (Phillip Carey) death on One Life to Live or Victor’s (John Aniston) on DAYS, Asa is a different type of character. Like, you could have characters going, “Oh! I’m glad he is dead.” You could have different points of view, but with Doug, you’re not having that. Every person loves this man. No one had a bad relationship with him. So, you’re challenge as a writer is how do you make it that not everybody’s saying the same thing and doing the same thing. And so, we tried to find ways to make the episode about all the familial relationships and yet, how do you make it about Doug and yet broaden the scope.

Photo: JPI

I had spoken to Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), a week after Bill’s memorial, for an interview. She said that she felt very fortunate that you did include her on discussions of how you would tackle Doug’s passing. How did that conversation go?

RON: First, I attended Bill’s funeral, which was incredible. I said to so many people it was an emotional service, but it was hard to be sad at this. The guy had an incredible life and it was an incredible celebration. And so, you’re sitting there watching this knowing that you now have to write something similar. And how do you write something that lives up to what you just witnessed? I wanted to talk to Susan to get her thoughts about, you know, how much do you want this to be about keeping Bill separate from Doug. How comfortable are you sharing your grief. She was incredible to talk to. It was a great chat.

You’re in the middle of taping these major scenes for the 15,000 episode to air in December. How do you think it’s going? Have you seen any of the scenes?

RON:  I haven’t seeing anything. I mean, we were still making changes to the script up till this morning!

Photo: JPI

The Writers Guild Awards are this Sunday, April 14th and once again this year there are two daytime drama nominees, General Hospital and Days of our Lives. How are you feeling about your chances this year?

RON: It is often just GH and us in the category. I’ve won three years in a row, so I’m kind of feeling like it’s their turn.

Photo: JPI

What episodes did you submit for contention? If I recall, they had to do with Victor’s memorial.

RON: The episodes we submitted were centered around Victor’s funeral. I think one has story with Vivian (Louise Sorel). We had some fun stuff, we had some emotional stuff at Victor’s death, and I am pretty sure that our submission was three episodes right around that time.

Did you make the decision to go with those episodes because there was a mix of humor and drama?

RON: I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, then there’s Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s crashing the reading of the will. So, we had a lot of fun and it’s hard sometimes to pick three that tell a story, as opposed to submitting for the Daytime Emmys, where the writing team only submits two shows. So, we shall see how it goes on Sunday.
