RATINGS: GH Continues to Gain! #1 in Key 18-34 Demo! DAYS & Y&R Add Viewers Too!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

The ratings are out for the week of May 7-May 11th and there is good and consistent upward direction for General Hospital right now as it continues to add viewers each week and lands at # 1 in the ratings for the key female 18-34 demo!  GH also added another +34,000 in total viewers for the ratings period.   It also held steady for the other key female demo of 18-49 while gaining viewers there too.

It would appear that those soap opera chefs, Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati are being able to bring their know-how and formula of success that made One Life to Live so cherished (Although clearly, the network did not cherish it!) to Port Charles.  While no comparison should be made to OLTL and GH as they are polar opposite shows, it would be a great thing for the genre if GH can stay on the map past its 50th birthday next year, and Valentini and Carlivati are the guys that could do it, if continued to be given the chance by the ABC network.

Days of our Lives which took a hit the last ratings period, actually gained the most viewers for the week adding another + 103,000.   In reality, only 8,000 viewers separated GH and DAYS,  but if both shows could continue to show gains, that would also help DAYS’ cause as it has been constantly trying to find the right success formula to stay on the air.  Will they be able to do it in time before their renewal is up?

Over at CBS, The Young and the Restless remained at number one and also garnered an additional +26,000 and increased their lead over second place, The Bold and the Beautiful who unfortunately was the only show to lose viewers, at a time when B&B has been gaining viewers over the last few weeks.   Of note: Y&R and DAYS also gained viewers in the 18-49 demo.  You can view the entire ratings courtesy of Soap Opera Network here.

So we ask you our soapers again, as you watch the current storylines unfold on the four soaps, what do you think needs to be fixed, adjusted, or stamped out, in order for you to want to tune-in everyday?   Let us know your thoughts!

GH needs to have super couples return, and stay together, they need better family dynamics between mothers/fathers and children, better sibling relationships where they get along with one another and gang up together against common enemies, they need Victor, Blair, Dani, Jack(recast please) little sam, Viki and more to come to port charles. It would be nice if OLTL and AMC was brought back on air.

Noooooo oltl was awful!! True gh fans I am sure will agree. That’s why no one watched it!!!

Agree, Sarah! I am so sick of having my GH actors and storylines pushed aside to accomodate the newbies from OLTL. It is no surprise to me the show was cancelled after observing the acting and stories. More GH!

I have been a general hospital fan for 49years, A true gh fan. One life to live was not the show that was awful it was general hospital that needed help. The ratings are going up because the oltl fans are tuning in take away my favorite characters and the ratings will go back down.

I am a true GH fan yet I strongly disagree! OLTL was a much beloved show that never should have been canceled. It had great ratings when it was cut.I believe the driving force behind the GH reprieve.

OLTL was NOT awful! It was a great soap, especially under Frank and Ron. It was also higher rated than GH at the time of its most unjust cancellation. But TIIC at ABC didn’t care. They just wanted it gone. Please get your facts straight.

Glen, before you tell others to get their facts straight, I think you outta do the same.

OLTL did NOT had higher ratings then GH, at least not at the time of the cancellation in April 2011. OLTL surpassed GH in the ratings in May 2011, AFTER the show had already been cancelled.

I for one watched all three from the beginning and stopped watching GH after it got really boring. OLTL was an awesome soap and I also watched AMC but OLTL was my favorite. Since Ron and Frank have livened up GH with new people and much needed new story lines I am watching everyday again. AMC and OLTL were cancelled and GH was next, they saved the show. If they were going to cancel each soap by the ratings it would have been AMC and GH. They just started with the first two and GH was next.

Terri, you make absolutely no sense. ABC did not cancelled OLTL instead of GH simply because of its schedule. You’re funny.

ABC cancelled OLTL instead of GH because OLTL had lower ratings than GH when came the time for ABC to make its decision. Yes, OLTL did get higher ratings than GH after the cancellation. But that was too little to late. There’s no way ABC could have undone the cancellation of OLTL and cancel GH instead.

Here are the ratings for the week of April 7, 2011 just before OLTL was cancelled. As you can see, GH had higher ratings than OLTL.

Heather, thanks for posting the ratings, its so funny how OLTL fanatics are now trying to revise the shows history, and all of sudden OLTL became the second coming of Christ. where are these oltl fans coming up with this over embellishment? are they going to argue that abc cancelled the show that was making them more money?

GH is only hanging by a thread! The only reason ratings went up is because OLTL viewers are coming over! You should be thanking them! GH sucks with all the mob BS, that’s why I stopped watching years ago, but the OLTL actors are making it more watchable!

Aria…yes ABC cancelled a show that was making them more money than General Hospital. That is a fact. OLTL came in UNDER BUDGET, the other ABC soaps did not.
I have been a fan of ABC soaps since the mid 70’s, I personally HATE that the fans are allowing TPTB to divide us even further. It is NOT supposed to be about GH vs OLTL….

every single oltl fanatic acts like oltl was always higher rated and a better soap then GH, the fact is, GH has always been more popular and higher rated, oltl only became higher rated the year it was announced it would be cancelled, thats when it when up in the ratings and stayed there till it last aired, but to now make it look like oltl was always the networks top rated soap is a big O lie. futhermore, GH actors, are by far more popular then the oltl ones, and to assume the ratings went up because they came aboard is a stretch, GH clearly needed a change and Phelps and Guza needed to go, I think Frank and Ron are a better fit but GH could of also brought in Wendy Riche and Claire Labine and the show would of improved 100%, so all this oltl saving Gh is a lot of bull sh*t.

Aria, come on don’t say that lol. One life to live fans are helping to bring up the ratings. Hey thanks for sticking up for me about the d.i.d. problem I had, I still want to know which personality of her husband doesn’t like the d.i.d. story and won’t watch general hospital anymore But I don’t want Michael to get mad at me so my lips are sealed, all I know about d.i.d. is what I seen on the soaps and I don’t think I want to be next to someone who is going to change to someone else in front of a mirror or t.v. From what I saw about Vicky/niki jessica/tess Kate/connie They should be locked up at shady brook because all 3 of those people tried to hurt if not kill innocent people,And they are not sitting around analyzing general hospital discussing whether they will watch it or not. I’m talking about A soap opera and yes I am a drama queen I love my soaps.

preach it sister 2 thumbs up!

They need to stop with the D.I.D. stories………………And keep Sonny & Jason in check. Less of these kind of stories could do the trick and keep Gh on longer than one year……….That’s my opinion ……….

TRue that!

Aria, I dont know where U came from or even if I ever read any of your prior post when I would be on here all the time, BUT its good to know that Heather has support on here with these OneLife fanatics. And here’s a nod to Kay Killgore, for being leveled headed and asking for attacks to STOP, which was one of my main plea’s on here. Listen, I loved OneLife, loved it, AND I am grateful if the crossover’s are helping in the ratings, BUT these fanatics on here make it seem like GH was doomed without the help of Onelifer’s… That is what is, pissing everyone off…!! I have (in the past) written the most thought provoking discussions about this subject, BUT this conversation goes ON and ON. I do think there is a lesson behind all of this, the uproar over OneLife’s cancellation over AMC which always got more press/Hollywood actors as guest bc of Susan Lucci’s Star appeal, AND then GH was popular bc of Luke/ Laura, and then Sonny/Brenda and the mob. BUT Onelife was just OneLife, the (middle child) of the three without an ‘ over the top ‘ character as the hem. Their characters were grounded, and ALL shared the /attraction attention of the viewers, opposed to the show centralizing on one character, moreso. Yes, even Vicky (who was the lead, the Star of the show) who got much air time- was AS grounded as any character on the show! I think the realism of OneLife, the sense of family (which was always a staple) of the show, is why the viewers ROARED over the cancellation. I think the lesson is for the actors and TPTB to see that ALL THE FANFARE of character’s like Erica Kane, and thoz on GH (as well) doesn’t always bring out the WILL to FIGHT for a show from the FANS. Now….. as for last April 2011, Gh was doing better than OneLife in the ratings., the ratings did increase after the cancellation, alittle too late. BUT even though, GH was doing better in the ratings, this time last year, OneLife was diffinitely a better show……in terms of writing this time last year. With that said, AMC has had its moments over the years of incrediable ratings, BUT noone is begging or even argueing on this site over AMC. (We all do miss David Haywood) and WE need to start a fan page, BLIZZ on here for him to come over to GH; we need a good/bad (lol) doctor on the show. But we are not cryng for anyone else from that show, (especially Lucci) like we miss everyone from OnelifeToLife, because….the ‘show’ was centered around, EVERY….ONE!!

1lovebcsoaps

Nice to see you back. To be honest, there are many times that I actually enjoyed OLTL more than GH. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed OLTL more than GH for all of 2011.

But it annoys that some people are saying that ABC should have canceled GH instead of OLTL just because OLTL had supposedly higher ratings than GH during the cancellation. First of all, that’s a big lie. And even if it had been true, what’s the big idea of wishing harm to another soap just because your soap got cancelled? I find that extremely selfish and juvenile. What happened to OLTL is unfortunate. But it’s no reason to wish the death of another show. After all, they’re both soap operas.

The reality is that OLTL is gone and GH is still there. We should focus on saving GH (as well as the other 3 soaps). That battle is far more constructive than whining about which soap ABC should have cancelled. Regardless of which soap really deserved cancellation, the past is the past and it cannot be changed. But we sure can have control over the present and the future.

I’m sure you’ve heard the rumor that ABC will let its affiliates decide if they want to keep GH or GAA. Regardless if that rumor is true or false, it’s imperative that we firmly let our affiliates know that we want GH, not GAA.

Finally, as far as boycotting the sponsors of The Chew and The Revolution, I am AGAINST that tactic. The reason being that many sponsors of The Chew and The Revolution are actually sponsors of GH also. So by boycotting the advertisers that are sponsoring The Chew, we are also hurting GH. Instead of boycotting these advertisers, we should contact them to encourage them to continue supporting GH while advising them to pull off their commercials from The Chew and Good Afternoon America. That would be the more logical thing to do instead of just going for the boycott thing that could also hurt GH in the process.

It would have made more sense for ABC to cancel GH instead of OLTL. OLTL was much higher in the ratings, was loved and praised by the critics and soap press for years before it was yanked. Until Ron and Frank came along GH was not only ABC’s lowest rated soap, but the lowest rated of ALL the soaps. Plus OLTL was millions under budget.

You have no idea what you’re talking about Blake.

It wouldn’t have make more sense for ABC to cancel GH instead of OLTL. First of all, GH is a much higher profile show than OLTL. Secondly, OLTL did NOT have higher ratings than GH when the show was cancelled unlike what so many OLTL fans want to think . OLTL got better ratings than GH after ABC canceled it.

Here are the ratings for April 7, 2011, the week before OLTL got cancelled.

well I agree with you about OLTL being under budget – that’s what I had read about them time and time again. I think ABC should have figured out a way to work smarter and keep all the soaps. One commentor had mentioned maybe going to 1/2 hr shows for a while. I was thinking even if they had 1 1/2 hr block of time for all 3 soaps and have more cross overs so fans would watch all 3 soaps more, and gees, how about raising the cost of the commercials and shortening the time of each commercial – I believe they’ve done that last thing as I’ve been seeing one after another during GH and they are quick.

There were many ways they could have retained their viewers and worked better within their budgets. The way ABC-duh did it was like cutting a major artery and slapping junk (like the revulsion) over the wound…. it was a dumb idea and that would has been bleeding ever since!

how many years will it be for AMC and OLTL fans to be quieted? I think a very long time.

I like OLTL best, but I also watched GH and sometimes AMC. Cross overs don’t bother me in the least as so many of the actors have been on so many soaps, sometimes as the same characters.

Whenever I see Olivia on GH, I always think of her as her OLTL character, so really doesn’t bother me if Star is still Star on GH. And I think all this commotion helps the GH ratings, and hey, that’s good for any of us that still want GH to be on the air.

So true.. What can you do.

I watched only AMC but I have my hopes that the OLTL added viewers will be enough to save GH

I have been a gh fan for 20 years. And I really hate that they are throwing all of the oltl bull shit into gh. There was a reason I didn’t watch oltl. It’s annoying. Not the actors per se but I don’t like the story lines. I do like that starr is on now. But that’s about it. It seems with Kate and her DID you are trying to resurrect the Vikki, Jessica thing. I have a husband with DID and it’s almost insulting the way that they are portrayed to be completely insane. That has caused my husband another fan to stop watching. I believe personally that the story lines and people that I have come to love on gh are going to get “killed ” or put in prison and replace with oltl and their story lines. It just seems like maybe that isn’t a good idea since that’s the reason it was canceled? No one wanted to watch them??!! Please be careful of howuch mixing and changing your doing with gh or your going to lose all of us die hard gh fans. I am sure that a balance can be found but it’s hard enough trying to watch the few min of the fragmented story lines of the characters that I really like with out all the llanview mess thrown in.

Well Sarah it is going around that Kate/Connie will have a 3rd alter.

LMAO, Kay killgore, I could not stop laughing at you plea, Christen where are you? You called me out as I should have been for using the s word please help here!!!! that was so funny. And no I have never, ever, used the f word, well, not here. Did you really hear that Kat/connie/ ?. Will there really be a 3rd alter?

Hi Kay,

I sent you a nod (just above) Blake replied May 20th, 2012 at 7:11 pm.

i agree 100% with EVERYTHING you said… i hope they don’t lose us GH fans and change our show and characters completely. some fans agree that change is good for me i don’t mind change but i think i would have preferred if the stars from oltl to were brought over and maybe slowly integrated or brought over as totally new characters… i feel like i am watching oltl these days & i have stopped watching that show for years esp because of their storylines… this DID thing is really a review of tess/bess nonsense.. i really hope port charles does not turn into llanview, i’ve had enough crossovers

Your old mob writers put the story in place of kate/connie’s d.i.d problem, Do your soap opera homework and you will find out that Ron decided to stick with the kate/connie personality problem, So the d.i.d, didn’t do a crossover from one life to live, and the gh fans who are against the crossovers better live with it and stop complaining the ratings are going up so that means whatever is going on now in port charles ITS WORKING. Also, General hospital is not like watching one life to live, One life to live was a much better soap. FRank and Ron are trying to make gh good again, but it will never be anything close to what I watched for 43years of the best soap ever.Oh yeah I also started watching general hospital on its very first day to (49 YEARS) so I watched both soaps.

Hey everybody I have set back & watched this unfold enough!! Please stop with the personal attacks against each other agree to disagree and it is only soap opera where we sit on the couch eating bon bon’s and coke and going to fantasy land! You guys plz. stop attacking each other Mr. Fairman should have stopped this nonsense enough. OK ! We get it you can’t get over OLTL being cancelled! Most of the actors have moved on I suggest we do as well before everybody blows a gasket.

Barbara T I heard that on loose lips but they get it wrong more then they get it right the only reason I beleived it this time was because we had Jess/Tess/Bess & Vicki/Nikki/Jean & Torrey? And a shout out to Mr. Fairman thank you! I have 3 sisters who we get down and nasty but I do not like to see this board become an insult board I get enough of that with politicians and family.

You brought the subject up. So which part of your husband doesn’t like general hospital? Both or just one of his did personalities? I’m just curious never met a( vicki/niki kate/connie) before. I don’t think that I could sit around watching soap operas or the news for that matter and then have to worry about my spouse changing his thoughts in a split second from one person to another. Unless of course you are visiting him at your local shady brooke and he is getting psychiatric help. In any case good luck to you, I think your going to need it.

Did you seriously just say that? You ignorant awful person. How dare you say that. My husband is a very successful software engineer. And incase you’re wondering why it happened it was from being shot point blank in Iraq. While he was serving our country. His brain couldn’t handle the stress and no he is NOT in our local shady brook. It is not nearly what it is portrayed to me on the soap and you should seriously mind your self. That was one of the rudest most hurtful things I have heard in a long ass time.

I too am a GH fan for a long time (over 30 years), but I also enjoyed OLTL and AMC. I don’t mind the crossovers at all, as I think they are blending in better than I actually thought they would (John McBain, Starr and Todd (who adds that dry humor, which is welcome). I am sure you and your husband know more than most of us viewers, when it comes to the DID storyline, since you live it, so I respect, understand and bow to your views for sure. What I will say about this though is, the DID storyline was already started prior to Frank and Ron coming aboard, so incorporating that into GH was not their idea, it came from the former GH regime. I sure hope the the GH mainstays are not killed off, and I don’t think that will be the case, as GH will and should stay true to their many years of storytelling, since it has worked for the better part of almost 50 years now, but I am grateful that Frank and Ron are helping to bring the ratings up and bringing viewers back, while adding new viewers as well. I am excited for what is to come. Sarah, I wish you and your husband the best, and I hope the powers that be at GH, can bring on storylines, that will bring your husband back to viewing it again.

I also thank your husband for serving our country and all of us. I cannot even image the sacrifices those that serve and those that love them, make to keep all of us safe. What a strong person your husband must be to have survived being shot at point blank range. Clearly God has a plan for him to do more good, maybe in the world of software engineering. God Bless both you and your husband.

SEriously I think you are the ignorant person bringing it up in the first place without explaining yourself and I don’t believe a word your saying. If I or anyone who really has d.i.d for real this would not be the place to discuss it.We are talking soap opera here not serious injuries that are happening to our precious soldiers, YOU really don’t want to get me started on that subject lady BEcause I can tell you several stories, And watch out who you call ignorant, I’m discussing a woman on a soap opera with d.i.d not to you who has a husband with this medical condition,IF this is even true.SOAP OPERA NOT REAL LIFE.

No I was stating why we are disliking one portion of the show. And why. Yes my husband has DID. I have been a military wife and daughter. Been through more tours of duty an stations than you can shake a stick at. So I was explaining myself. Maybe you should re read your comment saying which of his personalities don’t like it. That was fucked up.

Sarah and Barbara, your both truly entertaining, and now both sound like your in your own soap opera, but seriosly, i think we should stick to talking about “soap opera” not real life, this is not the forum for it, so i agree w/ barbara, and if Sarah your husband has did then i doubt you would get an accurate portrayal of it on a soap so both of you chill or not i don’t care because really, you two are drama queens, lol, oh and by the way GH has always been better then OlTL nough said.

Christine where are you? You called me out as I should have been for using the s word please help here!!!!

I’m really tired of hearing about the key demographic of 18–whatever. I’ve been watching for over 40 years and all of a sudden my age group doesn’t matter. How very insulting to loyal fans.

It is a insult, Its like we dont matter when it come to anything we watch, If your not young you don’t count. Very unfair because I do watch a lot of t.v, Ok I listen to a lot of t.v.

yeah! don’t they know 18-somethings don’t buy as nearly as much detergent, and coffee as us 30-40-50-somethings! A lot of those 18 yr olds are still living with their parents! ha!

Having watched Bold from the beginning, it’s difficult to critique the Bell’s body of work. But let me give it whirl… The Liam, Hope, Steffi story line brought out all that you could ask for in a soap…heartache, anger, sorrow, sweetness….and of course THE HEAT! But instead of going on long enough to worry viewers that we were in for a blast from the past of the Ridge, Brooke, Taylor days, it should have ended. I understand developing characters but we all know how loyal fans are to their characters. I have read the posts on chats…they are freaking serious! Liam is my fav but Hope and Steffi need to realize that he is a boy not yet a man. His character needs to be redeemed somehow. I would love for him to be heartsick over Hope thinking he has lost her forever, become depressed and all that could go with THAT story line and Bill realize that it is all his doing. I have no doubt that Scott can take any storyline to great heights. Hope needs to be developed into more of an strong, adult character. She is beautiful , sexy and needs to be shown as such. I always thought it would be great if she were actually Thorne’s child and they somehow don’t find out until an accident. I understand that they were developing Steffi into more of a likable character by showing her genuine love for Liam. But in the process, I think they shot themselves i the foot. Jacqui is wonderful however they write her! They have ruined Hope and Liam. They can never go back and change it. That’s another thing, rewriting history seems to really steam the viewers! This demographic threatens to go if you piss them off! It’s not like 1987 when we had no options…

GH is on fire with a few exceptions, Anthony Zacchara being one of them. Get rid of him! Tracy’s marriage to him is ridiculous. / So not liking this version of Starr! I get she’s angry and grieving, but come on! / Sad to see Matt Hunter go. / I know Genie Francis is at Y&R, but GH when she is available grab her fast! / Where is Monica Q? / Hey Ron and Frank, how about undoing the egregious rewrite of Rick Webber having an affair with a character that never existed and then killing him off? / Speaking of Rick, where’s Lesley? / Where’s Diane Miller? One of my fave characters (and actresses)? If Cougar Town won’t use her than GH should! / I love the actor playing Steven Lars, but he’s too old for the role. Recast please! / Any possibility of bringing back Jeff Webber? Their sister Terry Arnett?

hey Mark, on Anthony Zaccara, is it just me or has his character changed? He seemed to be one dark, dangerous mob guy a while back, like more dangerous than Sonny’s crew and more of late, he seems like he’s scared of his own shadow. Running when his tires were shot out – I’d think a mob guy would pull his gun and hide behind the car and be ready to shoot – even at poor Star. He keeps running over to Johnny ‘save me Johnny” scared of Tracy trying to kill him… you’d think he’d just arrange for her to have an accident to remind her he’s dangerous. what happened to him? did he bonk his head and forget he’s dangerous? 🙂

Christy, You are right about who is buying the groceries and your right about the 18 year old’s living at home eating and drinking all the Items you mentioned.I like anthony zaccara Hes interesting and I think the guy is funny, I hope he doesn’t turn up in a body bag.

This is very good news for us general hospital fans .But I am hearing since early this morning all over the net and at facebook, there are rumors floating around that general hospital is going to be cancelled that the renewal was a farce, I hate to say this but it wouldn’t surprise me I don’t trust abc/disney I also read something at the beginning of looselips over at soaptown usa that I am left scratching my head over, Start paying attention general hospital fans things may not seem what they are over at abc/disney theRAT channel.

Hi Barbara… you must mean the comment about GH’s lifespan right? Loose Lips has had some very interesting information about GH lately and who ever writes that has some inside info at GH versus the others. Let’s hope that ABC/Disney is not lying this time!

I have been all over the net today and facebook and I hope it isn’t true, I’ve run out of places to look for any more news, I don’t trust abc/disney, It’s like they want to play head games with us fans again, Looks like I will have to change my e mail to abc and bring this cancellation stuff again. Seems everything at loose lips happens. Every Sunday I look forward to what they have to say, Today it left me scratching my head, I’m afraid for general hospital I hope there just rumors.

I like Anthony Zacarra and even though he isn’t as dangerous for some reason as he use to be, I like that he is much more entertaining. You said Barb, you hope he don’t show up in a bloody bag, YET yes, on Tuesday, Johnny shot him point rage a few times. Did you call it before it was to happen or what? I like Anthony, he brings that crazy humor to the the show., unpredictiblity. Anthony please stay and continue to be the crazy father from hell.

I, hate, hate, hate, That they killed Anthony Zacarra, I love that guy, Every time he is on he makes me smile because yes, I think he is funny. From what I am hearing he may be dead, Call the ghost busters, Hes not leaving, he will haunt Johnny and Tracy for how long that’s another question.

I am happy to see those demographic numbers increasing for GH. I am not in that group but I like what they like.
OLTL was cancelled because of their low ratings in the demo group….TPTB need to grow a pair and put the writers and producers of GH on notice before they ruin GH as they did OLTL.

I so agree

OLTL was not canceled because of low ratings in this demographic. Towards the end, OLTL beat out every other soap in this demographic except Y&R.

Perhaps Kristen Alderson is related to GH’s improvement in the same demographic. Also note the writers and producers did not ruin OLTL, as its ratings had been better than GH’s.

Thank you David for saying what we one life to live fans know to be true. One life to live was the best soap, General hospital was for me very painful to watch over the years but I stuck by it . And I haven’t said this in a very long time, I believe the wrong soap was canceled and abc/disney knows it that’s why they hired Ron and Frank and thats why we have our one life to live crossovers, None of this can happen WITHOUT the approval of tptb at abc/disney. And I hope that the rumor I have been reading all over the net this weekend is not true and General hospital will not get canceled.

david, you’re using ratings from a week after OLTL was already cancelled. We all know that OLTL had higher ratings than GH after the cancellation. You’re not learning us anything new here.

Look at the ratings for March or April 2011. You will see that GH had better ratings than OLTL.

david, you can try to spin this anyway you want, but the fact is GH is on the air and OLTL isn’t, answer me this question, why would ABC cancell OLTL over GH? clearly one of the biggest factors had to be $$$$$money. So, if OLTL is this big show your trying to make it , why would they cancel the show making more money for them? or winning more awards for them? don’t think so, was it the show on more magazine covers? don’t think so. Tell me please, since you seem to have the answer, why did OLTL get cancelled over GH? just answer that question and lets see if it makes any sense.

Heather, I see your point about GH having higher ratings, but I think OLTL was improving. The week before (April 4-8, 2011) the OLTL cancellation announcement, OLTL rated higher than GH in total viewers:
1. Y&R 4,563,000 (-179,000/-770,000)
2. B&B 2,827,000 (-82,000/-426,000)
3. OLTL 2,630,000 (+56,000/+150,000)
4. GH 2,605,000 (-115,000/-163,000)
5. DAYS 2,363,000 (+135,000/-354,000)
6. AMC 2,303,000 (-80,000/-123,000)

These numbers for April 4-8, 2011 were posted on April 14, 2011, the same day as the announcement:

My response was directed toward MemphisBelle’s claim that FV/RC ruined OLTL. If OLTL was so bad, it never would have surpassed GH in the ratings for the last year.

GH is fun to watch under Cartini yes, but all in all it’s a bit too over the top for my liking, probably why I was never a OLTL fan. Now that the new regime is here I’m kinda forced to accept what it is now because there’s no way I’m giving up my favorite show for the past 23 years! I just know it could be better and more authentic feeling because I’ve experienced that for many years prior to this regime (mostly with Riche/Labine and some Phelps/Guza). The actors I’m used to, and watched for many years make the material worth watching! It’s hard to explain, I could probably speak on the topic for hours. That being said, if Cartini can keep GH on the air I will be forever thankful!

Nicely stated, James. I liked how U admitted its fun to watch, and although it’s not quite your taste, your grateful if that’s whats keeping it on the air.
I believe it needed some Blitz, Blazast, to spice up the mob theme. It was not enough BLAZAST for a mob themed show. It was too slow. Plus now, I’m hearing and seeing more than of many other character’s, and their lives.

I’ve watched GH on and off since I was 10 (I am now 41.) Most recently I stopped watching it when Jake was killed by Luke. I hate Bob Guza and think he was the biggest problem with GH for most of the last 10 years. Killing off Quartermaines (I can never forgive him for killing off Alan!), making women stupid, children are plot points and the heroes are career criminals.

I came back to GH when Valentini and Carlvati took over. They have worked miracles with this show! Heather Webber is back and wonderful. History is being remembered and mentioned. OLTL characters have been added. I didn’t watch that show and really I think only the men have added anything to the show. Starr is irritating most of the time and Tea is just plain awful. She just yells and lectures and rubs her belly. John McBain and Sam work like no other couple on GH has worked for years. I am no Sam fan but I can’t not watch her now that McBain is in the mix.

The show still has problems. The heroes are still mobsters and there is zero romance on this show. I could go for a star crossed romance right now. Bring back some adventure and mystery then give me a couple to root for a la Luke and Laura.

Maura I am glad you mentioned Tea rubbing her belly, I have heard those pregnancy pads itch and really get hot but I had the feeling it was because she was frightened that the pad was going to become loose and drop on set. Word to wardrobe dept. dress was too short also.

Kay killgore, She did rub her belly a lot, well, Her belly pad, and I have to agree the dress was a bit to short. But I did like all her scenes, I like when tea gets pissed off and starts ranting and raving. she hispanic shes on fire that’s a good thing.

I love GH. And I loved OLTL. I am enjoying the Kate storyline and am glad the show has soft peddled the mobster storylines with more a few emotional stories: Patrick mourning Robin; Sam and Jason dealing with the presence of John McBain. Perhaps they can bring Natalie to PC, too, and make it a quadrangle.

I’ve never cared for B&B, but I’m a fan of the other three (especially GH). I’ve watched all three ABC soaps since they began and I really like the OLTL characters that have been added to GH. The writing has improved and I can’t wait to watch each day. The Will coming out s/l on Days is being very well done and Y&R is still a classy show, even if the current storylines are kind of boring right now. I really hope that all the soap fans will continue to watch these shows and keep the ratings strong!

I agree, B&B was never my thing, but glad to see the other shows do well. I am glad about seeing Maggie and Victor on DOOL, and her finding out the big secret he kept from her.

It was GH’s highest ratings since OLTL’s final week. Thanks to the new regime, the show is more watchable now than it’s been in years.

Before the new writing regime, I fast-forwarded through 90% of GH. I would stockpile episodes and watch 2 weeks in about 2 hours. Now, I’m watching it ASAP everyday. I love the addition of Todd, Starr and John. Hope they stay for a long time. Tea is very distracting with the baby bump and short dress….that was perhaps the most awful maternity outfit in recent memory. But I’m really enjoying the rest of the additions. Love that Felicia is back to face the music; would really enjoy a Felicia/Mac/Alexis triangle. Sam is definitely more watchable with John McBain. I love Jason but would ffwd through every scene with Sam. Love that Heather Webber is back and as crazy as ever! She says more with one look than most can with entire monologues! And definitely bring back Diane Miller!

DAYS needs to keep telling stories like Will’s coming out, and keep John and Marlena onscreen and frontburner. That’s what keeps me tuned in. I have been watching the show for more than 30 years, so I’ve seen a lot of ups and downs. I hope they’ll be around for many more years.

I’m not surprised to see Y&R gaining viewers. This long time fan is SUPER excited with the way storyline is headed right now! So much exciting stuff on the horizon with Danny, Cricket, Paul, Ricky and Phyllis!! Going to be AMAZING and the lead up has been so cleverly crafted!! Kudos to the writing team and brilliant cast of Y&R!! Here’s to a long, hot Summer in Genoa City!!!!

I don’t know how anyone else feels, but the sniping back and forth between GH and OLTL fans is getting really old. Give it a rest already!

GH is on a roll, thanks to FV and RC, and the OLTL characters are fitting nicely into the show. We all have a reason to watch now. Instead of arguing back and forth, we should be uniting to keep driving those ratings up, and help keep GH on the air for years to come, and for the OLTL fans, keep some of your beloved characters alive for years to come, as well.

I 100% TOTALLY AGREE!!!!! WE SHOULD BE UNITING TO FIGHT THE REPLACEMENT SHOWS…NOT EACH OTHER!

I agree with you Dan. I have never watched GH until the OLTL characters were merged. Soapers should be watching GH and stop complaining. I miss AMC and OLTL but I am happy for what I can get right now!

Your right Dan, But lets face it the general hospital fans dont like the one life to live fans (I watched both soaps since the beginning) General hospital fans are whining that the one life to live crossovers are taking over and I am not seeing that I am seeing general hospital that has a few crossovers from another soap same characters names, so what. newbes come to the soaps all the time. The gh fans are nasty about it and then of course the oltl fans will speak up about it and what we really should be doing is sticking up for our soap to help it continue for many years, But what are the gh fans threatening to do? stop watching, Sorry that’s not a true Fan you stick with your show like I did through those awful mob stories and that franco freaks finger painting and so many other dopy stories those past writers shoved down our throats. Someone insults my one life to live, They will hear from me or any other fan that feels as I do.The gh fans also seem to forget us one life to live fans boycott that nasty, the revolution and it got canceled and general hospital was renewed, so throwing a couple of characters that we loved from landview isn’t hurting anyone and the cross overs are not taking over Port charles. their helping to save our soap So I guess the discussions will continue. You have to admit the posts are interesting, You should read what I had to deal with last night, Very interesting.

barbara t

After all the time that OLTL fans have repeated that ABC should have cancelled GH instead of OLTL, you can’t really blame GH fans for not liking OLTL fans.

Days is getting better. Will’s storyline is what is getting the viewers, I think. But Days still needs to step away from the whole Stefano-ISA thing, as well as the awful Gabi/Chelanie storyline.

First, I want to thank Michael Fairman and staff for creating the format of this website in a style that allows us all to express our opinions comfortably. I like the way you post ‘news’ about the soaps, and then pose questions that we can respond to and give feedback. Kudos to Michael and all involved. Hopefully, we can all do this respectfully by focusing on the ‘issues’ at hand and celebrate the diversity of our opinions.

For me, ‘soaps’ and this site are great momentary escapes from the stresses of ‘real’ life which we all have ( work, health, finances, family issues, national/international issues, etc.), so I appreciate coming on here reading everyone’s thoughts, and being able to express my ideas as a nice momentary break from life’s challenges, or in some cases to work through some of the issues. I find it a fun source of positive stress management. 🙂

Sorry, now, that I have the kumbaya, self-help therapy out of the way :), on to the content of the soaps. I, too, have really found the Gay/Will story line on Days to be one of the better story lines that they have done. It deals with an important social issue, and it was well done. The acting, dialogue, and content were good.

What I think needs to be fixed, adjusted, changed on Days is the sequencing of the storylines. They are started, then stopped for weeks at a time, then picked up again, then there are missing pieces, then some story lines are dropped, so you are following something then it is gone, then you are not sure if that piece is going to return and connect to something else, or if it is gone ( ex. Julie/Doug going to Africa to find some info.). The show becomes so choppy, disjointed, and all over the place with storylines starting and stopping, you start to say oh forget it, and stop watching. I know I have said this before, but I feel strongly, not only do they have to write good story lines with the content on the par of the Gay/Will storyline, they also have to make sure that the show flows more smoothly. I would assume that some of this is the production not just the writing.

What I would like to see is a balance of storylines that deal with important social/contemporary issues like the Gay/Will storyline combined with romance, and human relations/human condition dramas, and do them in a sequence, and way that make the stories build up little by little and flow more orderly. It is great if they add mystery, intrigue, and adventure type stories (as long as they are stories that can be done reasonably well with the limited budget and production capabilities of the soap), but if they cannot do them well, then family/relationship dramas are fine. To keep us all watching, they need to keep giving us ‘clues’ that keep us coming back for more, but they can’t give a clue and then stop the storyline for weeks, and weeks, and then expect us to be around when they finally get back to the storyline because you give up on it.

They have to do it in a way that different storylines are weaved in and out more steadly not huge gaps in between, or combine storylines, so there is one big storyline and a few small sub-storylines that are inter-related. They should concentrate on fewer storylines eventhough I understand they have to have a variety for different interests that they audiene may have ( I may like something that someone else doesn’t and vice a versa). They should keep storylines fairly up beat and positive and stay away from the ugly/dark stories of last year like Roborafe killing. The key is to be more fluid, sequenced, and organized in the telling of the stories.

All soaps have storylines that are like hair…..some days it looks great, other days you long for a hat. I used to watch the full ABC line-up. Then, I stopped watching GH because it became too Sonny-centric. I kept thinking – who would want to get involved with this man? You end up blown up, shot (sometimes more than once), kidnapped, etc. The diminishing of the Quartermaines was just sad.

One thing that was fairly consistent on OLTL that I found lacking on GH was also the treatment & use of veteran characters & actorsJackie Zeman is a prime example. She was just eliminated over time. There are so many characters Bobbie has ties to that she should be there for…Luke & Carly most definitely. Another is Leslie Charleson’s Monica. I realize that not every actor can be utilized all the time and contracts have a great deal to do with their appearances but, when two mainstays of a show are glaringly absent it is mind-boggling.

While OLTL was a show I stayed with until the end and miss terribly, it is gone and no amount of wishing & hoping will bring it back. It is nice to see some of the characters on GH….as long as they fit into story credibly. So far, I think that has been the case. If you think about it in terms of the idea that they could have just hired anyone to fill the roles vs trying to integrate established characters it may make it easier to accept there coming onto the show. If theses characters bring a following and increase ratings that is a huge plus in keeping GH airing.

Also, while some of the actors do have contracts I don’t believe all of them do. I think Florencia Lozano is only recurring….for now.

That outfit she had on WAS bizarre. When she first had it on in the jail cell with Starr I kept thinking she had a towel wrapped around her….haha

“All soaps have storylines that are like hair…..some days it looks great, other days you long for a hat.”

Chaz, I love your analogy of hair and soaps- very funny and so true!

I like what you said about the hair, However, Everyday for me is a bad hair day.

B&B is down because of this hope storyline she is a hated
character and it has been the hope show! It took mixing steffy
into this to make liam and hope remotely interesting. If bell
is smart he will put steffy with liam they could be a powerful
young supercouple! Until then i will continue to FF through hope scenes
or delete it all together.

What I REALLY wish would stop is the fans fighting each other over which show was on top or had better storylines. None of that matters anymore! We need to stick together in this fight, otherwise we ALL lose EVERY daytime drama!! We cannot allow the powers that be to divide us further!

Your right CTwildheart, It isnt about general hospital vs.one life to live. General hospital is the only abc soap we have left and right now it needs the general hospital fans and the one life to life fans to come together as one, WE have to save general hospital or we won’t have any daytime soaps left to discuss.

I think both GH AND DAYS have improved from what they were .. at least I’m watching now! RC&RV have made GH entertaining again, i just wish they had more love stories. They brought on all these great characters, Anna, Felicia, McBain, Todd Manning .. but they didn’t bring their counterparts, the ying to their yang .. Robert, Frisco, Natalie and Blair! So they’re only half as good to watch as they COULD be! How much more fun would it be to watch Anna as the new Chief of Police if ROBERT were there! As for DAYS, I love that they are reuniting “Lumi”, Sami&Lucas, these two are so much fun together. I like Chad&Melanie, Jack&Jennifer, as well. Disgusted by the Carrie/Austin/Rafe story, however, what a sordid mess! The Will story doesn’t impress me, either. It’s so agenda-driven and preachy. Sami is the only person who has reacted negatively, and she’s coming around fast. Most people would be upset if their kid was gay, especially in the Midwest, and they’re all devout Catholics, to boot! Not realistic at all.

Out of all these comments, not sure if this will even get read, but….I felt the need to speak out anyways.

I grew up as a GH fan, my mother watched all 3, AMC, OLTL and GH, she was a fan of all of them. I never could get attached to AMC, and therefore could understand why it was canceled. However OLTL, was a great show, It had great background, and it went through a lot of ups and downs, but it was a great show and interesting storylines.

Before OLTL was canceled, many viewers complained that GH was getting to involved with the mob, bring back vets, where are the quatermaines & the hospital, etc. Well guess what, it’s all back and some great 80s vets. While you can expect everyone to like the OLTL characters, they are doing 2 things here: Bringing in OLTL viewers, and Shaking up GH. GH needed shaking up. After a soap that has been on 49 years, it’s really hard to surprise long time viewers, therefore the show can get boring, with the new writers and execs, and new and old actors, I believe GH may actually be Y&R in ratings! this year (lol!). Your not cheating on GH because you like OLTL, they weren’t on at the same time! Also, are favorite characters aren’t losing air time, more likely they are gaining it, and also have more challenging & interesting roles.

So before you complain about how OLTL characters are taking away from GH, think again, because OLTL characters are getting caught up in GH drama, not OLTL drama.

Nancy Lee Grahn’s Star-Studded ALS Fundraiser Reveals “I’ll Be There” Video Featuring Soap Opera Notables

Talk about your impressive line-up! It’s a soap fans dream and for a great cause. General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) is prepping her one-night only ALS fundraiser which will feature many of her friends and co-stars.

The benefit is set for May 4th in Glendale, California. Slated to participate are Genie Francis, Jane Elliot, Peter Bergman, Maurice Benard, Eileen Davidson, Thorsten Kaye, Michelle Stafford, Stephen Nichols, Rena Sofer, Jason Thompson, Kelly Monaco, Melissa Claire Egan, Maura West, Kristina Wagner, Gregory Harrison, Trevor St. John, Kate Mansi, Kirsten Storms, Cynthia Watros, and many others.

On Wednesday, Grahn took to her social media and released an “I’ll be there” video shout-out featuring, Monaco, Elliot, Bergman, Bernard, West, Harrison, St. John and more. In a touching and important moment in the new video, Michelle Strogny, who is battling ALS, is featured.

Photo: ABC

Previously, in speaking with Soap Opera Digest on the impetus of the event, Grahn recalled, “I was actually doing Zoom events during Covid and I met this woman that I just fell in love with, Michelle Strojny. At the time, Michelle had been living with ALS for four years. Now, it’s five years. She is a mom of a teenage son, she has the most wonderful husband, and she has been dealing with this [disease] for quite a while. And obviously, there isn’t a cure yet. It’s not survivable yet. But as she says, it’s not incurable. Nothing is; it’s underfunded. But anyway, I just really dug this woman. She is so grounded and filled with grace, and she spends all of her time working to raise money for the cause. We did a fundraiser for her last year and then I thought, ‘You know what? The soaps don’t ever get together to do something for charity.’ Collectively, we have this amazing community and we don’t collectively use it for a good cause, and I think it’s such an easy thing for us to do and we could potentially really make a difference.”

As GH viewers know, Gregory Harrison is playing the character of Gregory Chase, who is also battling ALS in a touching storyline that is currently playing out shedding a light on this disease.

For information on Nancy’s event, including the stars who are s scheduled to participate click here. To purchase tickets to the event click here.

Check out the video featuring Nancy’s friends and co-stars below.  Now let us know, your thought son the line-up for the benefit and helping raise awareness and funds for ALS research via the comment section.

‘General Hospital’ Writer Shannon Peace Let Go, and Shares on Sprina: “One of My Only Regrets is to Not Have the Opportunity to Develop That ‘Ship’ Further”

As General Hospital’s new head writing team of Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahy gets off the ground and running, there are still changes a foot on the writing team.

Now comes word via breakdown writer Shannon Peace that she is no longer on contract with the long-running ABC soap heading into its 61st season. Peace shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram, thanking the fans, and the show for the opportunity and the importance of diversity in the writers room.

Peace began, “After almost 3 years on staff and 106 episodes penned, I am no longer on contract with General Hospital. Writing for this country’s longest running television serial drama has been an education of epic proportions; I will forever be grateful that I earned my WGA card on a daytime fixture that holds memories for so many.” (Peace pictured below with GH EP Frank Valentini and script writer, Charlotte Gibson from about ten months ago).

Photo: SPeaceIG

Shannon added “Even more importantly, as the sole Black breakdown writer (and only POC in the writers room) during my tenure, I pushed for vital interactions and discussions that prioritized inclusion, visibility, and representation”

The writer pointed to the example of vital interaction when in story, “Stella and Portia’s frank July 2022 conversation about the role race played in Esme’s framing of Trina is just one example of the impact I’m gratified to have had.”

Acknowledging former GH co-head writers was also part of Peace’s farewell expressing, “Appreciation to my former bosses, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor – not only taking a chance on me, but for valuing my opinion and championing my voice.”

Courtesy/ABC

Many GH fans know that Peace was key to the development of the love story between Trina Robinson and Spencer Cassadine as played by Tabyana Ali and Nicholas Chavez. Shannon gave a special shout-out to ‘Sprina’ fans, “I also want to thank fans who were supportive of my work, especially the recognition of my love for ‘Sprina’. One of my only regrets is not having to develop that ‘ship’ further.”

She concludes her statement with,”In the aftermath of a historic writer’s strike that shed new light on the troubling ways writers are regarded in daytime, my sincere hope is that General Hospital recommits to valuing staff writer efforts and input, with a more intentional focus on diverse viewpoints — and thrives for another 60 years.”

Accompanying her post, Shannon added, “Thank you all for the love and support these last few years. I hope GH fans get all they hope for and more!”

So, what do you think about GH not renewing Shannon’s contract? Will there be more continued changes afoot? What do you think is the future of ‘Sprina’ anyway at this point as viewers wait to see if Nicholas Chavez officially returns to the show?  Comment below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Learns Britt Died and Tells Anna He Has Been Working For Cates Since November 2021

On the Tuesday, March 26th of General Hospital, Anna (Finola Hughes) and the viewers learn about where Jason (Steve Burton) has been for over two and half years. However, Jason gets some news of his own.

Anna is visiting Jason at the PCPD interrogation room. She asks him if he shot Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), which he flatly denies. Anna believes him, but she tells Jason it doesn’t matter, because video footage shows him on the roof at the time of the shooting

When talk turns to Jason not willing to speak without his lawyer present, Anna can’t grasp why Jason would instead spend an hour alone talking with John Cates (Adam J. Harrington).

Photo: ABC

It is then that Anna brings up that John went by “Jagger” and that the two of them knew each other in high school. Jason doesn’t recall much of his time in high school following his brain injury, but then he gets furious realizing John knew about “Jason’s” past. That is when Jason slams the table and tells Anna, “I’ve been working for John Cates since November 2021.”

Next, Jason explains further that he has been working as an informant for the FBI. Anna wants to know how this came about and he tells her that after the tunnel collapsed, and he couldn’t make it to Britt (Kelly Thiebaud)… all of a sudden he sees Anna’s face drop.  Anna is the first person to tell him that Britt died and was murdered. She tells Jason the killer is in custody, but he continues to be shocked, overwhelmed with tears welling up in his eyes. Realizing he has to pivot to save his life, Jason continues telling Anna how he wound up working with John.

Jason explains that after the tunnel collapse in Greece, FBI agents grabbed him and placed him under arrest and took him to Quantico where he met John. At Quantico, John played a recording of RICO violations and offered Jason a deal if he agreed to be an informant against Pikeman, the illegal arms dealer.

Anna hears from Jason that he thinks Pikeman is selling illegal arms to anyone flagged by the NSA but has ties to the WSB which they needed a civilian to infiltrate their organization as a military soldier, a mercenary.

Jason tells Anna he was a part of the team brought into eliminate Sonny (Maurice Benard). Every time an attempt was made on Sonny’s life over the last two years, a different team was sent to do the job. Anna gets furious when she learns that John told Jason his job was to kill Sonny and she was with John at the warehouse that night. Jason ensured the sniper missed Sonny and left the rifle behind. However, they were supposed to meet an extraction team. Before he was shot, Dante saw it was Jason on the roof and when he turned around with his hands over his head, Dante was shot by the other guy. Jason says if Dante dies, he’ll be charged with capital murder and then will be useless to the FBI.

Meanwhile, John visits Bobbie’s and runs into Carly (Laura Wright). She learns Jason is in custody and is going to head to the PCPD. Before she does, Carly has some words with Cates when she learns not only does John have a vendetta against Sonny, but Jason too.  Carly tells John he should recuse himself from the case.

So, what did you think about the moment when Jason learned Britt died? What do you think of Jason’s return storyline thus far and what we learned about Jagger/Jason and more? Comment below. But first, check out a moment from today’s GH with Jason and Anna.
