Days Of Our Lives

RATINGS: GH Continues To Perk Up! DAYS Down! Y&R Ep Hits 5 Million Plus Total Viewers!

The ratings are out for the week of August 31st through September 4th, and there were some interesting developments overall.  First, General Hospital had another good week into the positive.  GH added the most total viewers for the week more than any other daytime drama with +81,000.

The ABC soap opera was also the only soap to gain in all key womens demographics: 18-49, 18-34, 25-54, although GH still remains at the bottom of the 18-49 category.  NBC’s Days of our Lives performance in the ratings was a bit disappointing given it’s beginning to fire on all cylinders with its returns and reinvigorated storylines.  The soap about to celebrate its 50th anniversary lost the most in the total viewer category with -79,000, and slipped slightly in all the key demos.

The Young and the Restless had a fantastic performance for their Monday, August 31st episode garnering 5,184,000 total viewers for the broadcast.  The series also gained in total viewers for the ratings week with +59,000.  The show is still outperforming itself from the previous year at this time.

It wasn’t the best of weeks for The Bold and the Beautiful which still remained firmly in second place of the four soaps.  B&B lost the most viewers in the key 18-49 demo and tied an all-time low in the rating share for that category.  View the entire ratings picture courtesy of SON here.

So, what do you think about the recent ratings performances of your favorite soaps?  Which soap do you think will be on the upswing over the next few weeks?  What have you enjoyed seeing on your favorite daytime drama? Ratings smatings, I dont get it! Ron’s episodes are still running and GH is up and Days is getting better but rating are down! THEN we get Y&R with a 5.0? You look at 8-31-2015 to 9-4-2015, NOTHING happened! Jack gave Ashley Jabot, Hillary and Devon with the terrible Neil turns heal story and Sage and Nick. SNORE! The ONLY thing that was good was when Adam was at Newman hacking away and Ian appeared! I take these rating numbers with a grain of salt!

Really!! Who’s watching this mess? Not me!! It’s so stupid I just can’t watch this mess anymore. I’ve been watching since it started. I was 11 years old. I don’t recognize the older characters and couldn’t care less about the younger ones.

I agree – don’t watch anymore. Just same old same old always repeating story lines and I guess the writers can’t think of new ones. It is sooo stupid now. I’m into 3 weeks of not watching but reading comments about it seems Sage is still rubbing her belly how stupid and sicking. Glad I quit.

Right, Timm. I am scratching my head over Y&R as well. It’s been pretty terrible lately. I am starting to lose interest in creepy Neil holding Hilary captive and acting like an all around creepy crawler just as I am losing interest in Sharon eye balling Sage’s baby bump while placing a vacancy sign on her own stomach

Neil is KING CREEPY but I guess this is written for him to have fun and for us to be entertained? REALLY? I would just cut her completely out of my life and just keep Devon at a great distance! Just like Sharon, the easy thing is to tell Dullen the truth. He is a good guy. Try again to get pregnant and make a pot of coffee! No they have to make Sharon BAT crazy, as usual! Speaking of coffee, Harry, I love that Dullen hired Ester. I like the actress and she is a staple on the show and was lost without Jeanne Cooper. This coffee shop job will give her something to do and she will get to interact with other cast members.

Well it is disturbing that in 2015 we have people watching a soap especially Y&R that is so disrespectful of women : we have the Sharon character once again a nut job probably going to steal a baby to make Dylan happy. What? We have Phyllis who must have had a complete lobotomy while she was in a coma raped for months by an imposter and go ho hum an I think I saw a picture of her in a paisley top in the woods meeting up with Ian. Then we have Chelsea who if I correctly every week upset with Adam who belongs on the series Baywatch rescuing people drowning in the ocean. Then we have Ashley fighting over a man who looks like my next door neighbors pug tHen we have Victoria who has also had a lobotomy because she has forgotten her Daddy cost her her first born and where our those two other kids? Then we have Nikki walking around in a trance still stuck on a man who would tie women to a railroad track and pray the train comes fast oh and we also have Sage or Herb crying about some spawn she is carrying from a guy who owns a bar that no one ever visits and calls his grown son Dude. Yep I can totally see why ratings are up. Shame on you viewers that are still watching if you quit we just might get a new team in and save a once great soap.

Mishael Morgan (Hilary) is on maternity leave. So, this is what the writers come up with as a way out? If you noticed, Hilary is shrouded in tulle and sheer paneling around her makeshift bed. Obviously it’s not the real actress. It is so hard to watch….just like Jack and Phyllis. I can’t take these two anymore. I don’t get the point…..is Ian going to use Phyllis somehow? Is he a physical threat to her? I must say, Harry….Ian really is amusing. He stole the scene with his sing-song…”Chelsea 2.0-oooo, you are my puppet show-oooo.” Cute and sardonically hilarious.
Another thing? Again, I ask; what happened to Marissa’s foreign accent?

Bingo nothing happened expect for Ian returning that Friday, Y&R’s Demos tell the story really. They are down in every category

So GH’s ratings are up for two weeks in a row and it’s with material from ousted headwriter Ron Carlivati?

Hmmmmmmmmm…maybe that ratings decline was a whole lot more about viewer burnout with Tony Geary and his exit and less to do with Ron’s writing.

GH ratings are up? Decline not about Ron and Geary burnout?

The ratings are awful. The numbers, 430K key demo, 2.6 million total, are what got Ron fired then and he would be on the chopping block today with those numbers.

The numbers WITH Geary were actually better than this week’s. The ratings completely fell through the bottom after he left, they crept up a bit but are still lower and pitiful.

It’s laughable to talk about Ron positively based on these numbers. One, the numbers are the same as what got him fired, they were just even lower for a couple of weeks and number two, regardless of that, it’s clear that Passanante has reworked Ron’s stuff anyway…and they are still at lows.

Matilda..
It is Ron’s stories as of now and they very good, Ron is bringing it. and the ratings up.
Jean & Shelly were fired from Y&R for bringing its ratings down lower than ever before. Jean has not rewritten Ron’s work, GH is not yet in her hands, she is in with writers getting to know the cast & crew etc, but not writing Ron’s stuff..
RC is the one to bring GH back up, and he is.
If you believe J&S writing for GH will improve it, not gonna happen..
Jeran and Shelly are the Queens of Snooze ..

Matilda is right–these ratings are not good at all but I understand the need to generate positivity.
Yes, I too suffered from Geary burnout but I would not have suffered Geary burnout had his exit strategy been orchestrated better–the writing was horrible, anti climatic and with no payout being afforded to long time viewers.
I am perplexed as to why the numbers have gone down for Days as it has been on fire these last few weeks.
I am hopeful that the numbers for all four soaps will be significantly higher upon the next ratings report.

Su- You should actually read my post before you respond to it.

I said the numbers, 430K demo, 2.6 million total viewers are the same numbers that got Ron fired. The week his firing was announced the ratings were 440K demo and 2.7 million total viewers, so this round of numbers are actually worse than the last set of numbers that got Ron fired.

The ratings in terms of Ron’s performance are not up. They are up slightly from a few weeks in August when GH hit bottom and are still at the levels that got him fired.

And I don’t know if JP and SA will bring the ratings up. I have no opinion on that and didn’t address that issue. My point, which is factual, is that the current ratings are the same horrible ratings that got RC fired, they are no better.

um no, it was Ron’s writing, believe me!

Alan,
that ^^ is a BINGO !

Addison,,
I was replying to the the current rating, the ratings that were now posted by Michael that are now in discussion, not last years..
”Whoooosh! (The sound one hears when something whooshes above one’s head).” 🙂

I agree with you Alan! I carefully read and re-read Friday’s credits and it indicated that it is still Ron’s writing. TY!

Matilda,
I do not care about last years numbers.
I was replying to the current ratings that were posted, and GH is up 🙂

My dear Suoo, Matilda is stipulating the fact that the current numbers are the same numbers which caused Ron to be fired.
Whoooosh! (The sound one hears when something whooshes above one’s head).

Again Su- Follow me here. It isn’t about last year’s numbers.

This past July 2015, the ratings were the same as the current week that you are claiming are up and a good week that somehow redeems Ron.

The week of July 20-24 2015, the week that Ron was fired, the ratings were 440K W18-49 and 2.7 million total viewers.

The current ratings that were posted, the numbers you are referring to are 430K W18-49 and 2.6 million total viewers.

The current ratings are the same as the ratings from this past July 2015 that got Ron fired this past July. The current ratings are not up from the ratings that got Ron fired.

Matilda..
I appreciate all your numbers, I just do care about them lol
My post was about the last posted ratings going up, that’s all..
I had no numbers just what was up for now/current..
And the ratings did go up, high or medium or low, they did go up..

We were not informed as to why Ron was let go, I do know ABC kept Ron on;
quote;
”ABC;
We love Ron. We love his writing. He has a blind script with us in primetime that we are going to be focusing on for him. ”

Anyways, it is about the current ratings I was replying to 🙂

Thanks for your research,I read it, it was interesting..

Ron came back from Luke’s exit really strong. As I knew he would. more-so in his OLTL family/character mode. A mistake to let RC go, he is the only one to bring it back up as he did before.
ABC likes Ron’s writing after all they kept him for primetime.
quote-
ABC;
” We love Ron. We love his writing. He has a blind script with us in primetime that we are going to be focusing on for him.”

I think eventually Ron will be back, after his break lol .. really, could well happen..

Y&R is really good, I no longer fall asleep while watching it since Jean & Shelly were fired and Pratt took over Y&R has been climbing back up and nobody is sleeping through it.

I’m turning into DOOL, but the sets remind me of Dark Shadows LOL
and the women wear the most gawd awful gaudy print dresses when they sit on the heavily printed couch or stand in front of the wallpaper (yes there is wallpaper lol) it looks like a Dali horrible collage. lol
But- nonetheless, I am getting into it .. Not bad a all, need more time.

Long live the soaps !!

Y&R isn’t “climbing” su000 if you look at their demos they have dropped big time in the past two weeks and not one person has said a word about it expect the fact the show has Gained Viewers which it has but Very little and I do mean Little. The show was almost to the 5 mil mark now they are not even close. The Neil story is terrible, I’ve been reading nothing but complaints about that since it started.

“…Long live the soaps !! ”

i know right…

blink fast enough
and theirs the Nielson

telling us what’s worth

where does the time go?

I will say this : I can’t believe Y&R fans mindset is liking what’s REELing

LOL

I really am waiting for mid-October for the gala premiere in Port Charles

Days of OUR Lives : steady fastidious charge !

Soap operas have their ups and downs you can’t be no 1 always it’s that it’s still on and we’re watching it! They’re still putting out great stories love GH!!

It doesn’t surprise me that GH is perking up. This show has consistently been knocking it out of the ballpark with the recent story involving Morgan and Sonny Corinthos. The return of Anna Devane is perfect and I am really enjoying watching Michael come around to accepting that his father is still a huge part of his life no matter how hard he tries to ignore it. I love the cast on GH. They are all stellar. DAYS has some interesting stories but I truly detest the whole John/Marlena story, because it is so YAWN inspiring. I don’t give a flying Walenda brother who John is. Marlena looks like she is sleeping through all of her performances. The best part of DAYS now is Theresa, Nicole and Kate with the Basic Black and the murder mystery is great but only because of the perfection of Billy Flynn as Chad. That man is so good I can see him in an Oscar winning role soon enough. And Kassie DePaiva’s performance as Eve when she found out Paige was dead literally made me cry. She was PERFECT. I love how sincere she is when she gets something to bite into storywise. But seriously all the stories involving the returning characters of yore are almost as boring as the blood diamonds story. I like Bo as a character but Steve is a snooze fest and that stupid eye patch. So 80’s. Caroline’s fall into Alzheimers will only be good if they tell a convincing story that doesn’t manipulate the viewer with her hallucinations of her dearly departed Sean. They need to make this story real and not have Victor come up with some miraculous cure when there is none on the horizon in real life. Be honest in your storytelling DAYS. Y&R carries a story out with some skill but they need to start building stories that do not directly involve Victor in every plot. What happens if, God forbid, Eric Braeden goes to meet his maker. It’s not like it’s impossible All you have to do is look back to Jeanne Cooper for evidence of what happens when all stories relate to her and she is no longer there to link you up to other characters. Y&R has a winner in Justin Hartley I just hope they utilize his strong character portrayal instead of linking him up with the whack job Ian. I am glad to see the shows I watching still going strong. As for the Bold and The Beautiful, I don’t care where they fall in the ratings. That show uses to many stunts to attract viewers. They need to tell a story and portray reality instead of going for trigger emotion stories like the transgender story. When Stephanie Forrester died of cancer that was an amazing story. They told a great story about a strong woman going out with dignity and strength instead of making her a simpering idiot. I wish all the shows good luck as they are the only four we have right now and we need them to remain strong.

Mateo, you hit on something here. Mrs C. She was vital to the show. I understand no one could have ever replaced Jeanne BUT the show should be bigger than the character. Y&R suffers without that character. So, they decided the character would die with Jeanne. Okay but you need to keep the family relevant. Jill is too weak and I understand the actress doesnt want to act full time. Jill was always more effective with Kay anyway. What the should have done was bring Tucker back into the fold. He could have moved into the mansion and kept his mother’s spirit alive and her company. William Russ was Tucker #1 and he would have been great to take over the family business. So, like you said, when Eric goes, no one will ever play Victor like he did so they should start setting up the show now for Victor’s demise. I know Nick and Noah are way to weak to step into their father’s footsteps.

@Mateo:

I really have to pull in the reign: Stephen Nichols: “Patch” Johnson

that eye patch is a mystique in itself… the aura surrounding HIS mantra took lives

this supercoupledom I wont let down

Kayla and Steve, took everything and we feasted

Eve: “…She was PERFECT. I love how sincere she is when she gets something to bite into storywise. ”

this could be the creme de la creme… of Eve wanton desire… FULL out reel
GO for it

Kassie DePaiva is ON

I’m worried about Caroline… and will cry on the spot

Y&R: “…God forbid, Eric Braeden goes to meet his maker. ” their would be a world wide cause celeb

Y&R has SO MUCH…. in Justin Hartley… swoon

Sorry, the headline and narrative is so misleading and inappropriate. The only headline and story here is that the bleeding has stopped. Why isn’t that positive enough?

GH is still at all time lows in the demo. 433,000 W18-49 is terrible. Because the Silas murder mystery, all Franco all the time show took the ratings to an embarrassing 380,000 in the demo for a couple of weeks, we are talking about GH being the “only” soap with gains?

You can’t measure against other shows like that when you are in the tank and your gains still represent terrible numbers. You can’t point to GH being the only show with gains in total viewers, 81,000, when they are at 2,635,000, DOWN 268,000 from last year, when Y&R and B&B are at 4,777,000 and 3,568,000 respectively and both UP over 100,000 from last year.

GH stopped the bleeding and there’s an indication that people may start coming back. That’s the situation, it’s a positive one and why not just state that fact.

At the beginning of August GH announced that the murder mystery starring Franco would last a month. Viewers tuned out in a mass exodus taking the show to embarrassing lows for the first three weeks. Some people returned the fourth week, during the trial, knowing it was ending and getting back up to speed for the stories that would take over. They basically stayed for the next week, with a slight increase. Now we’ll see if Sonny/Michael/Carly/Jason hold more interest for people, get some more interested and tuning in during the weeks leading up to the new writer’s material starting to air.

Well said, AJQ. I am so over Tanko and I will be happy if I never have to lay eyes on him or Neigh-na again.

So happy to see GH’s ratings on the upswing. I will say, I am truly enjoying the current storylines, and I look forward to the Jason reveal happening soon as well, which is sure to bring great numbers! Keep up the great work all those that work in front of, and behind the cameras!

I AGREE…AMEN!!

me too 🙂

Me too!

I agree also.

Y&R does not disappoint. The cast also seems to be enjoying themselves as well. Like watching a one act Broadway play every day. Quality performers and quality acting.

I hate to say this, Days is heading towards cancellation. The ratings are not going up. Very disapointing. Gh the ratings are slowly going up, that is a good sign.

days was renewed last month.

Hold on–these numbers need a second look and deserve scrutiny. Don’t go by the headline alone. Moreover, Days will most likely enjoy an ascension upon the next rating report.

college students watch on line , these are not recorded

days deserves higher ratings!
im sure it ll pick up now that the murders are looking to be serial! patch is back, bo s on his way and jj and eve are about to hit rock bottom!
only expalnation for lower than expected viewers could be too much ben/ abby /chad! abby s better a little unhinged and i dont buy her as a heroine torn between two baby daddys especially the robotic ben and sudden di mera chad! less of that and some more paul, derrick, eric , nicole,( no daniel thou) and the new salem serial murders!

I’m hopeful for DOOL, despite the disappointing numbers. It’s early in their new regime (new HWs), but the show is in fine form. Alot of the newbies are gone. Couples that the audience likes (John and Marlena, Steve and Kayla) are being written for. Veteran soap actors like Galen Gering, Judi Evans, Wally Kurth and Kassie DePaiva are in frontburner storylines. I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying Abby and Chad, who are getting very romantic writing. Hope is a key character again. Julie and Doug are seen more frequently. Rafe’s back on the police force and Justin’s the new D.A. The stories make sense (IMO) and move at a decent pace. I can only hope that the past months of boring storytelling and disconnected scenes haven’t driven away too many of the show’s fans. We saw this happen before with now-cancelled shows and my fingers are crossed it won’t happen again.

“really” nice post

i’ll use one of MF’ words…. “reinvigorated” (give new energy or strength to.)

yeah, it’s a little hard not to read in to these dagnabbit “truths” LOL just saying: this antiquated days of ole on Nielson bible.

when one is excited by the turn of all that is DAYS.

I love this show…. the heartfelt sentiment of whole cast pull with scripts that reel.

I just finished Wed. ep : Kassie DePaiva’ what a gem! my heart ached right along with… I think we’ll see more acting chop from Casey Moss to make up for his understated “shock” I cried.

same ep: Hope accepts Aiden proposal! this is my quandary and big disgruntle!!!!
Oy! Daniel Cosgrove is todays here and now LEADING man… yes… we’ve got Patch, Bo, John, etc… thrown in for good measure… but… DG’ Aiden is swoon sexy mysterious stuff plus. I don’t want the eventual demise of his character exit? I’m hoping that somehow… he goes undercover… is presumed dead… and resurfaces…. perhaps after Peter Reckell 3 month return. it may seem like a good thing… to have Kristian Alfonso dilemma of shared scenes with : Bo, Aiden, and Rafe. “ALL” that plus. but… the comfort and ease of watching DG and KA work together… and create a believable couple I love and has caught on with the audience… and lord knows… not much from the past few years, outside of Kristen’ returns, and Sonny and Will are worthy performance.

I’m venting…

like the little engine that could: Days of OUR Lives is transforming…. the stories are picking up steam… and the actors are pulling out all the stops.

dang it!

Kayla is frontburner! Hello? My lady love is steaming up my telee

Justin (Wally Kurth) is fully entrenched in the serial … I hope he’s given more to do, with Eve I say… and not the murderer…

Chad: smart move on the production team to feature him while bringing back the vets and retooling the entire show… we all knew he had the acting chops and he’s elevated his skill set… LOVE this guy!

RAFE! Rafe’alicious… dang he’s omnipresent…

then add to this : WITH real scripts : Kassie DePaiva and Casey Moss… YES!

Bo is back…

then we’ve got:

John
Marlena
Kate
Adrienne
Maggie
Victor
Paul

on the horizon: Eduardo, Andre, Sami, Lani, (Vincent Irizarry), Gabs,

guns are blazing… firing

spurs turn

That’s how I feel, word needs to get out that DAYS is writing for its vets again. They have the makings of some good soapy romance with Chad&Abby, and there’s still hope for Eric&Nicole! Especially if they start working together. DAYS is back on track. They need to show more flashbacks of the Supercouples. They need to show us why we should care about Justin&Adrienne, Patch&Kayla, Bo&Hope, John&Marlena, Julie&Doug. This 50th celebration needs to be about remembering DAYS’ past but looking forward to its future. Intergenerational stories. To me, they have just the right mix right now. But they didn’t have for a long time. I lost interest when Jack was killed off for the umpteenth time. I only started watching regularly again when Patch returned. It might take time for lapsed viewers to get on board again. Ratings should improve each week another beloved vet returns. I noticed that, although DAYS’ ratings were down overall, the day Patch returned was 1.94. DAYS hasn’t seen a day that high in months!

Y&R’s demos for the past two weeks have been terrible, The show has gained but not very much.

I know I’m a DOOL former viewer who didn’t watch that week. The writing is better, but the show isn’t telling any stories I want to watch.

I wantend Hope to be happy with Aiden, but no the writers had to turn him into one of Stefano’s minions.

I don’t care about Steve, Bo and André. I don’t care who owns Basic Black.

Yes, youth should be involved in the stories, but do they really have to SORAS Ciara, Theo and Chase?

And where’s Will, the single father? So help me if the rumors are true that he gets killed off there will be Hell to pay.

Wait a minute!!! Wasn’t this supposed to be the summer when “Days of Our Lives” took over the No. 3 slot? What happened to that?

And seeing as there is only one week of summer left, so much for “Days'” big dreams. Guess it will have to wait until the 50th Anniversary week in November.

Days is getting sooooo much better…improved acting and character-driven stories…im hooked everyday…GH is ok…the acting is mixed with good and bad…some improvement in the writing…im for both doing well but Days is far better than GH and should be doing much better by years end…i guess viewers taste in good quality entertainment is on the downslide but that doesnt suprise me…with the popularity of no talent KarTRASHions and Mily-makes-me-puke Cyrus…lol

Im trying to give days a chance, i use to watch it as a kid, and since their anniversary is coming up, i thought why not see whats happening, and so far i have to be honest, i’m not really seeing must see tv. granted i don’t know half the people on the show, i do remember all the vets, Hope is still beautiful, so is jen, and is it just me or do kayla and adriane look more like sisters then ex sis inlaws? i saw patch but i kept thinking i like him better as stephan cassadine( i know he’s better know for patch) but to me he’s a Cassadine. and then theres justin who to me is Ned, (GH drop the ball there) letting dool offer him a contract, what a major miss. But back to days, as i was saying so far i’m not hooked, all these characters do is hang around this Mall a lot. It will take a while to see if i can get hooked, i’m not sure they are better then GH(even on a bad day i was more entertain by GH), but like i said, it will take a while, i think Dool and GH are more alike just like Y&R and BB are similar, and the two latter shows really bore me, i couldn’t get hooked on those whatsoever. regardless, i’m a soap fan so i’m hoping they all do great.

I’m with you Aria.
Long time fan since 1982, then quit, came back, returned again, and now I popped in for the last few episodes since Stephen returned and I’m still not sold on it. Same old thing here …. fight for Basic Black, John is STILL Lookin for his parents, an new Salem Strangler/Slasher story regurgitated, Stefano in charge of Aiden, Eve recasted by someone as OLD as her parents!! Where on earth is Charotte Ross when you need her? I’m sorry, Kassie DePaiva may be a good actress and no disrespect to her abilities, but Eve Donovan she is NOT. No way.
I’m pretty bored with this show once again. I may ffwd through the boring stuff and see when Peter makes his debut in Salem but other than that, I won’t waste my time sticking around again.
To me, the actors on GH are much more interesting to watch (minus a few).

I am actually surprised. I switched to Days after hanging in way too long for GH and have been pleasantly surprised. The vets made you feel right at home and the “newbies” actually held my attention. I am liking the Chad/Abby dynamic.

Just from an aesthetics viewpoint, Days seems much brighter and better edited/produced over the last few weeks under the new writers’ regime. The show is starting to get really good. Unfortunately, the numbers aren’t reflecting that, at least not yet. I know it was the Friday before Labor Day weekend, but Days was very close to having under 2 million viewers on that day. Hopefully, things will start to pick up ratings wise as it gets closer to the 50th. The show still has time, but I imagine the renewal/cancellation decision will be made by January at the latest.

It just may be that a soap is not in this day and age able to last 50 yrs. The newest soaps have the best ratings. When a soap ages (and my first soaps were Young Doctor Malone with my grandmother and From These Roots) the typical thing is to start focusing on the younger generation. But that only works for a while…stories get repeated, the younger actors leave or just don’t have the interest and power of the earlier ones. then the stunt s start “big names” for actors, fixing the past by changing storylines or making char “undead”. sometimes that works for a while, but rarely forever. There is also lets be trendy===a soap does a out of the box story “rape” “transplants” “gays” “transgender” whatever…eventually everyone is doing it and increasingly less successful. We are almost out of the ability to do that also.
I think it just may be time to go with a new soap different characters that we are getting to know. Sure they may have the same relationship issue or whatever but at least they are new people. I heard there was a new show re. Silicon Valley, we already have recording indlustry or even military like army wives. The mythical small town or suburb might need new venues at least in part.
My bottom line is in the long run, more of any char, returns of other chars, weddings, murders, new couples (interracial, gay , tg ) or whatever , new name stars….will only give s how a brief spike. I don’t see anything really fixing those older soaps …how many times reunite Kayla, Steve, and how many times can Maxie screw up or Sonny love , marry go dark, etc…eventually enough.
I advocate for a new show or two. And if ABC loves Ron let him do a new soap. Might work some of the web ones are. Why not put Winterthrorne if it is so hot on the daytime scheudle rather than the ones that aren’t working.
this may seem mean, but no body has a job for life and these talented actors may want to do another show as another char. They have to get tired of doing the same old, same od.
That said, I admit if JW returned to any soap, I’d watch. and If they fixed Robin, Frisco, Lucky,…on Gh I certainly watch. which I am not now. What I am saying is I don’t know how many others are like me. But I do think a number of us would like a good new soap with talented actors..there are several primetime ones that are working..in fact imho almost every drama now is some sort of ” continuing drama”.

There will be new primetime soaps but never a new daytime soap..
We have to support all 4 daytime soaps because they are it, the last of the soaps.
When they die there will be no more daytime soaps. 🙁

Never in a million years will networks invest in creating a new daytime drama– these last four are it, and once they are gone do not expect anymore. And these last four are still here only because there is a core audience for each that right now the network couldn’t replace it with anything that will match it. However if the numbers dip low enough, they will in a heartbeat.

But in principle I agree with you, no show should run this long, creatively there is only so much you can do to one character then it borders on the silly– ie couples getting remarried for the 5th time or more. In the old days we had new shows replace shows that had run their course, but it ain’t going to happen anymore. Unless they can invent a new format that is cheaper and easier to produce, daytime soaps are on their way out.

I think with the writers’ creativity, they can figure out how to pull us all back in and keep us there. If they write great characters and let the stories spring from those characters and not from outlandish plots and dialogue that they would never do or say, they can make the daytime soaps great again. It really does start with the writing in that regard. Of course, it’s all a team effort, so they’ve got to be excellent in all regards. As I mentioned to someone else here, if they could find the show’s “identity,” maybe by going to back to its roots and really knowing the characters inside and out (the already established ones), that would be a springboard for excellent work. I have high hopes! 🙂

hi Samantha..
I too hope GH goes back to its roots of the past 20/25 years, the mob was somewhat prime.
I want a mob story. there has not been a mob story for years..
some scenes of mob stuff but not a story as once was, an upfront story as in days of yore..
going back to the 80’s is not realistic in the forming and media of this the 21st century..
I miss the once;
The Alcazar’s
#1- rival mob Anthony/Johnny Zacchara
(and other assorted mobsters from back in day, that are long gone.
GH no longer has a mob/mobsters. just 2 LOL ..

I can’t run and hide from these threads!

argh!

dagnabbit those Nielson!

I’m loving Days of OUR Lives.

GH : I didn’t really care… that Sonny got shot
I was a little peeved that little miss know it all… Sam… w/Jake in tow… attempted to bring down Nikolas… w/Sloane. Ugh! WRITERS! don’t you dare bring down Nikolas… he’s your best male lead… keep him at ELQ

I really liked Bobbi (????) gift? to her daughter Carly… the story of how the baby bonnet came about… I thought that was so touching and affecting…. I realize it’s Carly’ “happiest” day of her life… but she giggled same laugh umpteenth million times!

Morgan: I think it’s a mistake to have him , like father like son, bi-polar… I don’t know…. after he’s medicated… then what? tamed libido, machinations in check… no more Ava! the true parentage of Avery will never be explored? Kiki would be dumber to even give him another chance. I don’t know… how about Morgan and Rosalie… she’s a hot tamale (which by the way…. Brad and Rosalie have to stay married so they can’t testify against each other and/or both will end up in Pentonville? ) OK

Hooray Patrick!
Love your comment. I also think it’s a mistake for them to suddenly make Morgan bipolar. His petulant temper tantrums and massive are not all indicative of bipolar disorder. That’s not how manic depressives act and if you cannot address this complex, devastating disorder with respect, sensitivity in an educated manner than I maintain that you do not address it at all. I know many disagree, but I feel Craig doesn’t have the acting prowess to pull this off.

PS–I meant to write ‘then’ not ‘than.’
But since I came back to correct myself, I must say that Saprinna really got on my last nerve playing the resident Michael Q expert.
She was also the one who convinced Michael to give Baby Avery back to Sonny. Michael was right to take that precious baby away from Sonny– like they say about war, he is not healthy for children and other things.
He was also right to detest that son–of-a–bitch for killing his father in cold blood, I watched last week DESPITE Sonny and Sulky Morgan–I watched to finally watch Jake finally show some glimmer of remembrance and some glimmer of life.

Oh, Harry. I agree with you about all of your above statements.

I think Days should expect a bit of a dip in ratings because whenever a show shifts directions there will be some who dislike it and leave. But hopefully some former viewers will begin to watch again when they hear about all the returns of former characters. Personally, it is great to see some old sets come out of moth balls– lets hope to see a return to a full scale version of the Brady Pub and the Dimera mansion soon. Obviously Ken Corday and Sony raided the piggy bank to afford all this– but I do fear what will happen when the 50th hoopla is over– is it back to everyone meeting in fake park again?

B&B annoys me, the whole Ivy blackmailing Steffy, only to wipe out the video, which is probably not really wiped out after all, is a waste of my time. Ivy and Steffy right now are unbearable– their voices are like nails on a chalkboard.

Glad to see Y&R making Kate L. (Esther) earn her salary. She in on contract and gets paid whether she is on screen or not and since JC passed away, Esther hasn’t been around– so KL had a nice long paid vacation-LOL.

GH is GH, it hasn’t gotten worse, it hasn’t gotten better, it is what it is; but I’m glad they are moving the Jason Jake story finally, and I’m liking Hayden and Nikolas relationship. I see Michael having to take over Sonny’s business while Sonny recovers — unless the new writers change that– but it has a Godfather vibe with Michael being like Al Pacino’s character — and Sabrina being Diane Keaton’s character– it has possibilities. Mob stories don’t have to be just about shoot outs– just look how long the Soprano’s was on television– so if GH is making that their focus, it done right, it might work, but if done badly it will be laughable– but anything is better than vampires, people coming back from dead over ,super villains in masks, etc, etc….

I agree with you 100% percent.

One constant in the last two weeks is the return of the original Sloane. He’s the reason I started watching again (and for the new head writer’s material — which I heard doesn’t start airing ’til next month, but I have seen the name of one of those new writers in the recent credits). And although no one has mentioned him here yet under this article, there are TONS of peeps I know who love him. Have seen him in other shows over the years, so this actor has been building up an audience and probably doesn’t even realize it…like bees to honey! Hahah! Although it’s a strange kind of character that Ron created — just in the sense of it’s hard to figure out Sloane — esp. with the changing of actors, which I thought was a big mistake, and no offense to the second Sloane — I was truly impressed with what Rob Derringer did with the material, with scenes with Anna and with Nick. He was given writing that seemed so convoluted on one hand, with jumps in character (same with other characters — which is one reason I can’t wait to see the October writing), but he was outstanding. Any ol’ actor could’ve played those words on one level all the way through, but I absolutely loved his vulnerability. I really, really want to see more of him and this character’s back story and his history with Anna. In the world of soaps, wouldn’t it be jaw-dropping if Sloane turned out to be somebody else from Anna’s past who had to go into protective custody and change his identity, including physical, in order to protect her and save his own life? Over the top, I know, but, hey, it’s a soap. 😉 Regardless, he is fascinating. The character, the actor… The actor especially because of what he brings the role and all the potential story lines that could ensue. Fantastic move in bringing him back to Port Charles!!!

And I forgot to add that the actor’s portrayal of Sloane when Anna was turning the tables on him was brilliant. You could read behind his eyes what he was thinking, and how he made sense of the lines. I have no idea what they could possibly do now with Anna since the writers made her kill someone (DUMB move on the part of the writers), but for goodness sakes, it was Sloane who sounded like the sane one during their scenes together, and I hope they save both characters. Some of those scenes from last week sounded like a desperate attempt by the writers to work their way out of a black hole — but Robb Derringer and Finola Hughes and Tyler Christopher played their parts beautifully and together as a team. I really think they’re all trying to save this soap and make it great again. Just had to say that as a “P.S.”… They found a treasure with Derringer. They made a mistake in letting him go, and it’s to their credit they brought him back. And now he needs to stay. Well done, GH actors!!! I now have high hopes and look forward to the story lines in October too!

I like “original recipe Sloane” better, too. Always liked him, just not as a love interest for Anna. I’m hoping Tristan Rogers will return. Until then, I’m just not very interested in watching “mob central” or the “Franco&Nina soap refugees hour” I like Jake (and Elizabeth), but I doubt very much if anything significant is going to happen there until November sweeps. I’ll definitely tune in for the Liason wedding and big Jason reveal.

You nailed it @maddiehayes! I’m trying to remain patient, but there’s simply nothing much to grab my fancy in Port Charles these days. (I care not for the current umpteenth installment of the “Sonny and Carly” show, nor the meltdown of Morgan…as for Nina and Franco? The less said the better…..) I truly had hoped for an exodus of the many marginal characters amassed on the GH canvas over these past few years, but all we have witnessed is the most unwelcome departures of the magnificent Michael Easton and legendary Donna Mills. Definitely NOT what I had in mind! In other words….I’m also still waiting for the dramatic tide to turn to turn, especially for Jason, et al…. and sooner, rather than later, please! (I’ve skipped over nearly every episode since Luke left!) As for your request for TR’s return, I second that motion!

@maddiehayes: Yep, if the writers don’t keep Sloane and Anna together, I think it would be interesting to see him paired with Hayden. Wouldn’t that create soap drama because of Nikolas and what she’s trying to remember! I saw chemistry between Sloane and Hayden during the argument scene with Nikolas. Could definitely see them as a GH couple, especially since she was sympathetic toward him and he seemed to appreciate it. It was all subtle, but great material to grow from there. (Other pairings I’d love to see happen would be: Patrick with Robin (if she’d come back), Elizabeth with Lucky (if he’d some back), Jason with Sam, and glad Carly will be back with Sonny. Anna with Sloane or Scorpio. And..speaking of Anna…maybe that guy she killed really isn’t dead after all, which would get her off the hook and make her character more likable again. I do like that character — but was ticked the writers made her do something so out of character (which is what seemed to happen with a bunch of them). I’d also love it if Emily really wasn’t dead (maybe Helena had something to do with the hiding, like she did with Elizabeth’s son) and came back to Nikolas as his true love to save him from becoming someone he didn’t use to be. Elizabeth, Lucky, Nikolas, and Emily… That was a good group. Would love to see those relationships again. (Thinking of Sloane again though…if not Anna or Hayden…how about Elizabeth? That would be an interesting pairing… I think it could work! What do you think?) 🙂

GH has other stories, It is not Carly & Sonny.
Finally there is a long awaited story for the Chorinthoes family.
They are a core family, the largest family, and the most interesting family.
It is about time they are upfront in a family story..

when people only concentrate on story and black out everything else going on all the ,other stories, well they are missing out..
and skipping weeks of stories and then complaining about GH when they missed other stories because they were not watching is really……………… lol

Hi, su.
I think you missed Shay’s point. I am quite sure she means that THE SONNY AND CARLY show is a rerun, many times over. From what I understand, the pair has tried the family life as a unit, but failed miserably, time and again. Do you honestly think this time around will/would have worked? Perhaps the soap gods got it right this time. What better way to stop a marriage than to have one of them shot?
And, su. Do you really want these two together? Think about it….they have also had a poisonous relationship. I do believe that, if Sonny comes out of this alive, which he will, LOL, the only way this couple can live a mentally and emotionally healthy life, is for Sonny to shed his dishonest-John mask. I think fans are tired of more of the same. I can’t complain because I have not witnessed any of their past marriages or ANYTHING, but I can sympathize with many who have.
I want the progress of the Jake reveal to quicken its pace. I don’t want Sonny’s I-could-care-less storyline to take precedence over all other stories. Bye.

Hi CeeCee..
I would love Sonny and Ava as a couple, never a dull moment ..
Carly and Sonny need one last try, they are no longer young and in the dating pool.
They will not last, no couple is forever after.
Ava will eventually come between them, hopefully ..

Exactly, CeeCee! Thank you for “translating” my meaning for su….LOL! It’s like Einstein’s old saying about “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results,” yet we’re supposed to be over the moon that the vile Sonny and delusional Carly are up for giving it still another nuptial go???? It’s rather ironic how those of us who had so hoped for a Luke and Laura reunion were instructed to put a cork in those fond desires, grow up and move on, whilst we’re told the exact opposite for this beyond stale coupling. And by the way, you needn’t have suffered through the first four versions of the Corinthos marriage-go-round to know where this latest one is eventually headed….I’d say you’ve already astutely called the odds for success simply based upon common sense, and a good grasp of the two players involved. As for the Jake reveal, yes, by all means let’s get to that….at least it features a fresh leading man, and with a little luck, a new spin on a legacy character’s previously all-too-predictable tale.

I get you now, su….well, I see your persona as a fan, a little clearer. You like strife in a relationship. You love antagonistic behavior and melodrama. You also love mischief ( well, I like that, too. Lol). I suppose that’s what soaps are all about, yes? So, in that respect, I give you credit. I follow your thought! Later.

Days is now airing at night on POP, could this affect the daytime ratings?

GH, was Awesome this week.. Sure can tell, Jean Passanate work!!!

00ops Jeremy, it is still Ron’s work until mid-october 😉

Maybe the bulk of it is still Ron’s…but I’ve seen Jean Passanante’s name in the credits recently. Do you think that maybe she’s been reworking Ron’s work? I can’t wait to see what the new writers bring in October!

I notice Days got 1.94 on Monday episode and next highighest rates day was Wednesday 38th 1.79. But Friday episode was 1.64. Which means they lost 3 whole ratings points has compared to first of the week.

I’m glad GH’s numbers are going back in the right direction. I’ve enjoyed the show the past few weeks. It was in a bad funk really since before the Nurses Ball, which I thought was by far the worst NB of all time, then they killed off Duke which was a huge mistake and a turn off for many, then Luke’s exit storyline was horrendous. Only now are things finally starting to pick back up.

It started with the fall out from the murder of Silas, which I thought provided some excellent drama. And personally, I love the family drama with Sonny and his sons, the Morgan bipolar storyline, Carly and the man she has always loved, the shooting was dramatic and gave Billy Miller a chance to shine, and move the Jason reveal along. They got Ric involved as Sonny’s brother, instead of running around with Nina, Madeline and the rest of the crazies in town. I thought the scene at the ER with Ric telling off Michael was perhaps the best scene of the week. So rich with emotion, history and backstory.

At its core, that’s what GH has always been about, family drama. You don’t need any crazy, over the top stories, just simple, easy to get emotionally invested in stories. It’s what I hope we will be seeing more of with the transition to the new writing team. I thought this past week was one of the best weeks they’ve had in a while. GH is definitely headed in the right direction.

I agree. I see the show shifting in storytelling and better writing, more drama, less stupid stunts (Julian & Alexis Seinfeld skit ripoff) and more emotional conversations. I would be happy if all the Jeromes say bye-bye. I honestly dont think they have brought anything to the show. I think killing of AJ was a mistake and I would like to see Elizabeth vanish. I will be happy then

I, as many others FF through looong boring conversations they are boring and quite tiresome..
Sopas would be very dull/boring if only couples and family..
I like plots that are fast moving not long sappy campy love stories that are doomed from day one to end.
Family is in every soap, core families will always have their stories..
I like pace and adventure..as do others 🙂

out of the millions of viewers only 000000000.1 %? lol even read and post on soap sites, our opinions are not all that important in realm of things.
people have begging and complaining since 2000 and nothing much has changed and doubt it will, it is the networks soaps , their soap their game.

@Dan — I agree with you about the family drama — and about this past week being the best in a long time. I’d been staying away from this soap (and it had been my favorite!) but would tune in from time to time over the last year or so, and always was so disappointed at how they had ruined “my” soap. Ha! 😉 I lost interest. But then heard about the new writers and them bringing back the original Sloane. Yep, best week in a long time! One thing that I think is important with a soap is to catch the audience’s heart. That’s what the soaps did more of a few years ago and then some. The more recent story lines were all over the place and seemed to have lost the show’s identity and the reason most people tune in. I’m not saying don’t have the mob element — because there’s definitely family material there in different sort of way — but it’s got to have some connecting thread that pulls you in each day; otherwise, we just don’t care. I hope that makes sense. Have more I want to say, but this is already getting too long again. LOL! 😉

Days is also airing on Pop in the evening. So many are watching there instead. These ratings are only for the NBC broadcast. So its not fair to say they are dropping when they are probably holding steady.

general hospital the hottest soap BILLY MILLER STAFFORD AND MY FAVOURITE FRANCO KOOL

LONG LIVE GH !!!
(( I love it !!!

LOVE GH HOT HOT HOT

NO MORE YR ALL GH

Mary Ann, not a poet–hope she knows it.

I think Mary Ann and Su000 share a room, with Ron Cartooni, in a shoe.

Regarding Days, glad they are bringing back vets, and hopefully, improve the writing with romance, relationship building, and new and improved storylines-like the idea of Nicole wanting to buy and run a business, but not happy right now with the murders- do not want to watch that. Who needs to see a young girl (Paige) dead on the floor, so not watching much now (maybe this is why ratings are down), but looking forward to Days getting past the murders and on to better storylines. If that happens, glad to watch and hopefully, ratings will go up. Not one for seeing violence and muders on the soap. That is not what I watch the soaps for (the news has enough of that and other dark shows) . The soaps are for lighter escape.

Maybe GH ratings are up because Sonny lying comatose in a hospital bed is more exciting than Sonny mumbling his lines.

I am really waiting for something interesting, exciting, and even revealing to happen on this show. There are too many storylines that have grown stagnant because they haven’t been allowed to move forward. Love in the afternoon is all well and good IF there is actual forward movement on the storyline. I got bored long ago with constant reminders in the form of repetition of information. Really, writers? We aren’t dunces, you know.

Ha Ha! That’s great, Engrady! It is kind of telling that ratings go up when Sonny doesn’t have any lines. LOL.

PEOPLE KEEP TALKING ABOUT REPEATING……HERE WE GO ….ANOTHER VICTOR JACK LONG DRAGGED OUT MESS WITH A COUPLE NEW CHARACTERS ADDED TO THE MIX…….AND THE DRAMAS OF SHARON EVERY DAY…..EVERY DAY GETS MORE BORING,,,,GOING ON VACATION AND NO RECORDING OF THIS MESS!!!!!

Speaking of Sharon, whose house will she burn down this time? Every time she has a looney-tune episode, she turns into Sybil. Warning/advice to the writers: haven’t you done enough damage to this character? Ms Case is such a good sport…LOL.

I don’t even recognize Y & R anymore. Sharon is the new Sheila? Another pitiful, crazy, baby stealing character. Yawn. The angry and cynical millennial brat Mariah acting as the voice of conscience and reason for Sharon? Doesn’t make sense. How it remains the #1 soap is beyond me. Days and GH have been fantastic.

Sorry, but who really thinks Sonny won’t make-it and is on the edge of their seat? Anyone? Crickets. I thought so.

More poor storylines to set up new Mob Boss. Crazy they could of dreamed up something better.

I’m so disgusted Michael is all aboard the CarSon train. The best thing about him was his disgust of Sonny & Carly at AJ’s death & ensuing cover-up. Please trade Sabrina for a brain and a spine, Michael, and I might like you again.

I just shake my head. Why, why, why is the moral compass of this show Sonny, a murdering thug, and Carly, a mob mole who has no problem covering up his crimes. WHY WHY WHY!!!!!!!!

Co sign. Co sign a million times infinity.

And for freak sake how many more scenes with those two can one reasonably endure.

Sam, I completely agree with your thoughts on Robb Derringer as Sloane.above. Although I have continued to mostly listen to GH since in left in January, I have never been so excited to watch GH again, as I am when he is on. He brings pure emotion to each and every scene, such a breath of fresh air. Since the recast at the beginning of the year he has done a lot of guest roles, which I am extremely happy about. I hope GH decides to keep him around for awhile, therefore I won’t become completely bored watching GH again.

Hi, Layla! Well, he hasn’t been back on for a week yet, and just from spoilers, it doesn’t look like he’ll appear this week either (hope I’m wrong!). It’s ridiculous how story threads (not just that one) are just dropped for a week or more at a time and not woven in more with the other stories. To me, that’s bad storytelling. If they want to keep their audience, I hope they do a better job at this — and that’s why I’m so interested to see what the new writers bring to the table in October. Back to Sloane, that scene with Nikolas and Hayden was fantastic — so much subtext and so much potential for story growth. I’d love to see Sloane and Hayden end up as a couple, especially if Anna really does cut her ties with him. Will be interesting to see what happens. I’d also like to see Sam go back with Jake/Jason, and then bring back or recast Lucky and have Elizabeth fall in love with him all over again. But whatever they do, they’ve got to keep Sloane living in Port Charles and give him strong story material. He’s a fantastic actor…and he makes me swoon! Haha! 🙂

Sloane will be back on the week of September 28th. I don’t know how many episodes that week but he will be back during that time. I hope that the new writers learn that they can’t run characters and than not show them for almost a month. The big storyline right now being who shot Sonny, but half the viewers don’t even care anymore. I am glad they didn’t have him hanging on for a year. Jason is going to come run the business and get his memory back eventually. I hope that they don’t turn Jake into too much of a fool who can’t make up his mind if he wants lying Liz or Sam. A lot of the other storylines need to get going too. Too much of drawn out storylines for too long. I am really happy that Robb Derringer is back though. It has me watching, at least when he is on anyway.

Thanks for that info, Layla! I’ll probably skip watching the rest of this week then, and see what happens next week.

When is Jason going to get his memory back??? This is been going on too long . Don’t want Elizabeth to marry Jake(Jason). Sam still loves Jason and deserve to be together. Liz is very selfish! And very uncaring towards Sam & her son , to rob Sam of her husband and her son of his dad.

This week, DAYS head scribe, Ron Carlivati, confirmed that, and told Michael Fairman TV on the decision of the scripts the team submitted: “I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, and then there was Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s (Louise Sorel) crashing the reading of the will.”

You can follow along with the live updated list of all the winners from tonight’s WGA ceremonies here.

Michael Fairman TV will have more on DAYS WGA Award win as it becomes available.

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves Talk Return to DAYS for Doug’s Funeral, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Their Enduring Friendship

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on December 3rd. The story will feature emotional and heart-tugging scenes of Doug Williams funeral and honor his portrayer, the beloved Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th at the age of 98.

While the actors, producers, and crew took a lunch time break to pose for some pictures and speak with the press, they knew they would have to get back to taping the funeral, which was going to make it a tough day, but also cathartic for all who loved Bill Hayes.

Several returns have thus far been announced including; Melissa Reeves reprising her signature role of Jennifer Horton (a part she first played in 1985), and Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux. Reeves had last appeared on the show back in 2021, and she was replaced by Emmy-winner Cady McClain in her absence when Jennifer was in storylines. In real-life, Melissa had moved full-time to Tennessee along with her husband, Scott Reeves (ex-DAYS, GH, Y&R). Now, and as previously reported, Reeves will first appear back on DAYS for the Thanksgiving episodes with the Hortons.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Matt and Melissa during the 15,000th episode celebration to get their take on: being back for these special episodes, how it has been working with and watching Susan Seaforth Hayes portray Julie’s grief over losing Doug, and how they have supported each other through the years. Check out what they shared below.

Melissa, you are back on the set of Days of our Lives for this very emotional and special moment in the series history. How does it feel?

MELISSA: Oh, my goodness. I am honored. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but to be here for Bill. He was like my real-life dance partner. He taught me how to ballroom dance. And to be here for Susan, of course, who’s just been our sweet hero this whole week. We’re just following her lead. She’s just been this incredibly strong example for us in the midst of this trial and season of her life. She is like just lifting us all up with her. It’s been incredible.

I was at Bill Hayes memorial service which was truly incredible and I know at the time you were in Tennessee. It was moving and celebratory of his life, all at the same time.

MELISSA: That’s all I have heard. I have to watch it on You Tube. They said it was just a real celebration of his life and I love that.

Photo: JPI

This must be difficult for Susan Seaforth Hayes depicting the death of Doug, when she is still grieving the loss of her beloved husband. (Susan pictured above with the returning Stephen Schnetzer who plays her on-screen brother, Steve Olson).

MELISSA: I’m sure Susan has those moments at home by herself, but she’s so good at being a leader and leading all of us. We’re following her, you know, and she’s like, “This is how I want to feel today.” And we’re just going along with her, you know? It’s so sweet.

Photo: JPI

How is it to see Matt Ashford again live and in-person?

MELISSA: You know, Matt and I can go years without talking, or seeing each other, and then the minute we see each other we’re chatting away.

MATT: Melissa was out on set doing a scene yesterday on the phone talking to a stage manager; as she was telling some really tough news on the phone. I’m like crying in the background, literally, I’m off-stage crying.

MELISSA: And then we get like back into normal life, and we’re like, okay, “What’s happening? What’s happening with this … or what’s happening with that?”

I had read, Melissa, that you were in touch with Matt about if there night be a possibility for you to reprise your role as Jennifer for these special episodes?

MELISSA: Yes. Well, Matt was like, “Hey! Would you want to come back? “And I was like, “Matt, you know, I would always come back. ”

MATT:  Every time I come here to Days of our Lives, they ask, “Where’s Missy? How’s Missy?” Everybody backstage says, “I miss her.” All of the crew is asking about her and saying, “It would be nice to see Missy. Nothing wrong with you Matt, but …”  They said, “Where is she?” I said, “She wants to come!”

Photo: JPI

There are some beautiful photos of Missy and Bill and Susan thorough the years that I found. It just reminded me of just the deep and entrenched history we all have had with the show, personally and professionally.

MATT: Missy is roughly the age where Francis Reid (ex-Alice Horton) was when she started the show, which is just crazy.

Photo: JPI

I’ve always said Missy was going to be the next generation Alice. Do you feel that Jennifer is the heir apparent matriarch of the Horton family?

MELISSA: Yes. I mean, this has been greatest blessing of my life, and that would be great. I told Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of our Lives) when I was 17 that this show would be my life. Ken always told me, “This is your home,” and I’ve always felt like that.

How have gotten through the scenes watching Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie go through the loss of Doug?

MATT: Susan is bringing her best performance life for her and Bill. I mean, she’s a showbiz baby. She always has been one hundred percent, and she’s doing it for him, and this is who they’ve always been. So, you’re seeing this amazing performance colored by her life. She has her private life as Susan, but she has enough plugged into Julie that she’s done amazing work. The director, producers and writers are giving her room to live in these moments and it’s quite wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Have you already broken down in tears during the taping?

MELISSA: Yesterday, but today’s taping of the actual funeral I think they want us to try and be just more celebratory.

MATT: I mean, it is a beautiful long life for Bill Hayes and his character of Doug Williams, and so it will be about that. Then, you get a bunch of us together in the church pews, and there’s going to be hijinks.

MELISSA: We all have been through the waves of grief. You have that awful cry and then all of a sudden you feel okay.  There are those family situations we are portraying where you’re like, “What do we do? What do we do now? You know, no one knows what to do. But, it’s so sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the scenes all turn out.

So, are you glad that Matt and Melissa are back for the 15K episode and Doug’s funeral? From what we can tell, it’s going to be quite an emotional journey for Days of our Lives fans, and especially the performance of Susan Seaforth Hayes,

Ron Carlivati Talks on Decision to Make Days of our Lives 15000th Episode About Doug’s Funeral, and Previews Chances for WGA Award

This week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode. In of it itself, that is an incredible accomplishment for the long-running soap opera currently streaming on Peacock.

However, this on set gathering was a bit different. Though the show is celebrating their achievement, they are also in the middle of taping scenes surrounding the death and the funeral of Doug Williams, played by the late Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th of this year at the age of 98.

As previously revealed many longtime favorites are back to honor Bill and the character of Doug including: Gloria Loring (Liz), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Matthew Ashford (Jack), Maree Cheatham (Marie), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Stephen Schnetzer (Steve) to name but a few.

Michael Fairman TV was in attendance and spoke with Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati to gain some insight into how the 15,000 episode was crafted and the decision to honor the character of Doug Williams and Bill Hayes as its epicenter. In addition, Ron weighed-in on this Sunday’s April 14th WGA (Writers Guild of America) Awards, where he and his writing team are facing off with General Hospital for the daytime drama prize. Here’s what Ron shared below.

Was this your idea to make the 15,000th episode centered around Doug’s funeral and passing?

RON: It was. When you’re looking at it, and laying out the calendar for the whole year and you see 15,000 is coming up, we’re like, “What are we going to do?” And then, we got the news that Bill had passed away and something kind of clicked. I was like, “We should honor Doug on that show.” So then, we started to kind of build around that … when does he pass away? How does he pass away? Who could come back? You know, it’s a lot.  I’m very pleased with the returns that we got as there’s so much that you could do. We wanted everybody we could get. So, we put together a wish list and Janet Drucker (co-executive producer, Days of our Lives) made it happen.

You have Melissa Reeves back as Jennifer, when the role was last played by Cady McClain. What has it meant to have Missy back for these shows?

RON: It was so nice to see Missy Reeves. I think Cady has done such a good job, but on the 15,000th episode to see Missy as Jennifer, it’s a big deal. So having her was great, and overall, the milestone was a big undertaking, because you want to live up to it. You want the 15,000th episode to be good. Now, it has a lot of real emotion that you’re playing. because for the cast and the crew they’re honoring Bill Hayes just as much as we’re honoring Doug Williams.

Was it hard for you and the team to write this episode?

RON: Yes. I’ll tell you why it was hard to write.  When I wrote, for example, Asa’s (Phillip Carey) death on One Life to Live or Victor’s (John Aniston) on DAYS, Asa is a different type of character. Like, you could have characters going, “Oh! I’m glad he is dead.” You could have different points of view, but with Doug, you’re not having that. Every person loves this man. No one had a bad relationship with him. So, you’re challenge as a writer is how do you make it that not everybody’s saying the same thing and doing the same thing. And so, we tried to find ways to make the episode about all the familial relationships and yet, how do you make it about Doug and yet broaden the scope.

I had spoken to Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), a week after Bill’s memorial, for an interview. She said that she felt very fortunate that you did include her on discussions of how you would tackle Doug’s passing. How did that conversation go?

RON: First, I attended Bill’s funeral, which was incredible. I said to so many people it was an emotional service, but it was hard to be sad at this. The guy had an incredible life and it was an incredible celebration. And so, you’re sitting there watching this knowing that you now have to write something similar. And how do you write something that lives up to what you just witnessed? I wanted to talk to Susan to get her thoughts about, you know, how much do you want this to be about keeping Bill separate from Doug. How comfortable are you sharing your grief. She was incredible to talk to. It was a great chat.

You’re in the middle of taping these major scenes for the 15,000 episode to air in December. How do you think it’s going? Have you seen any of the scenes?

RON:  I haven’t seeing anything. I mean, we were still making changes to the script up till this morning!

The Writers Guild Awards are this Sunday, April 14th and once again this year there are two daytime drama nominees, General Hospital and Days of our Lives. How are you feeling about your chances this year?

RON: It is often just GH and us in the category. I’ve won three years in a row, so I’m kind of feeling like it’s their turn.

What episodes did you submit for contention? If I recall, they had to do with Victor’s memorial.

RON: The episodes we submitted were centered around Victor’s funeral. I think one has story with Vivian (Louise Sorel). We had some fun stuff, we had some emotional stuff at Victor’s death, and I am pretty sure that our submission was three episodes right around that time.

Did you make the decision to go with those episodes because there was a mix of humor and drama?

RON: I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, then there’s Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s crashing the reading of the will. So, we had a lot of fun and it’s hard sometimes to pick three that tell a story, as opposed to submitting for the Daytime Emmys, where the writing team only submits two shows. So, we shall see how it goes on Sunday.
