RATINGS: It’s All About The Bold and the Beautiful!

Courtesy/CBS

The ratings are out for the final week of May Sweeps – May 18th-22nd – and it was CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful as suspected that came out as the daytime drama series with the biggest gains, and in fact, the only soap to gain total viewers for the ratings week!  In addition, B&B was up in total viewers in the key women demos 18-49 and 18-34.

The story of Maya Avant (Karla Mosley) being revealed as a transgender woman, and the fallout it has on her career and her love life, and that of the career of her boyfriend, Rick Forrester (Jacob Young), and his struggle to hold on to the CEO position at Forrester Creations was top-notch story.

In addition, how Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) and his Spencer publications is using Maya’s very personal story and turning into sensationalism to hurt Rick, and to sell magazines and drive traffic to their online platforms, really caught viewers attention.

And in the case of Monday’s news of Caitlyn Jenner appearing for the first time and on the cover of Vanity Fair and tweeting an emotional message:  “I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me,” the story on B&B couldn’t be more relevant and current.

B&B came close to almost 4 million total viewers for the ratings week.  The Young and the Restless, General Hospital and Days of our Lives all ended up in the minus column for total viewers for the rating period, with GH slightly down with -2,000.

So, what do you think about the performance of The Bold and the Beautiful and the timeliness of this storyline and its twists and turns? Comment below!

The writing of this story has been stupendous…add the superb acting chops of Jacob Yound and Kara Moseley and you have a recipe for excellence.

The Bold & The Beautiful is the ONLY soap that is being solidly written these days. It’s actually believable and I look forward to watching it. I’ve turn Y&R off until CBS & Sony come to their senses and dump the horror duo of Phleps & Pratt. They have made that show unwatchable. DAYS is on such a downward spiral, that it is doubtful that it will ever recover. As far as GH goes, it’s a convoluted mess. It has a better shot at re-gaining its footing, but it better get on track fast. The daytime soap genre is faltering, except for B&B.

please tune in to DAYS , August, 2015… when the new writing team for DAYS premieres

it’s the 50th anniversary

shows shift change and deserve that chance to premiere their work

hi Patrick..
I am going to tune in and check it out 🙂

DO tune in..too much online that the 50th into 2016 is the last year if numbers remain so low. Don’t be moaning and crying if you suddenly find DAYS off the NBC schedule as of next September. It doesn’t even need to happen at all if people just tune in..DVR..get others to do it and push the ratings up whether it’s your favorite or not. How many favorites can you have out of 4..ALL..how would the landscape look with just 3..BLEAK…WATCH WATCH WATCH!!!!

strong week for B&B. they are the best soap right now

Kudos to B&B!

But this is what I find ridiculous about the show: it’s a half-hour show, and yet they continue wasting precious moments of airtime with exterior (some new) shots of Los Angeles. It seems they are adding increasingly more time to these exterior shots. We get it! The action takes place in Los Angeles. It just seems like unnecessary padding to me…

I agree totally, but it helps to know when to stop when FF through the commercials

Hi Lynda: Well, that’s one benefit…

I HAVE OFTEN THOUGHT THE SAME…WE GET IT!!!!!

Hi Judy: Great minds think alike…

This story, at it’s heart, is a love story– whether these two people can overcome their issues and stay together– yes, the issues are a bit different than most couples go through, but that doesn’t change the heart of the story. There are two ways to approach soaps, the campy plot driven way, or the character driven way, where the characters are the star, not the action. B&B right now is the only soap left that hasn’t dipped its hand into the campy style. The transgender story could have been told in a campy way, but they wrote it beautifully simple and real– and I think that style still has a place and by the ratings it seems like a lot of others think so too.

I am also really liking the corporate take over story line of this week. It too is being written really well, delving into the history of the family and what makes a Forrester a Forrester– blood or love— It is nice to see Brad actually writing something other than another lame love triangle– please do not start it up again with Steffy, Liam, Ivy and Wyatt–okay. PS. I like to see Caroline have to be joint CEO with Rick, as part of some compromise to this take over business.

I believe Y&R +400,000 viewers same week over last year.

Yes. Up almost a half million viewers over a year ago.

I don’t like Pratt but am surprised that it wasn’t mentioned.

It has been amazing. Jacob and Karla have kept me running to the television every afternoon for the next episode. Rays is clearly the new IT couple.

nice response

i’m excited for Jacob Young… I LOVED his work on AMC
I am thrilled that Karla work is being acknowledged… what a tough storyline
posts have already lauded her for an emmy nomination and “deserved” win

dang! I loved and hated Jacob Young’ work on AMC as JR…. so this intrigues me… as he never accepted his romance with Marissa.. was over… she left him.. and started a romance with Bianca… YES …. : loved this

so the angst and turmoil… for Rick Forrester is frontburner

I’m excited for both actors, and would like to see both win an Emmy next year. Great love story for them.

B&B was up in total viewers in the key women demos 18-49 and 18-34.
We have had the similar ‘ups’ for Y&R and GH and even Days..
It all depends what the doggie in the window is to get them to come and look..
Seems a transgender was the winning ticket/the doggie .. lol

I once tried tried to watch B&B and its people especially the women were too phony/plastic.. lol..

Happy for the B&B fans..

i agree with… whatever it takes to “lure” in viewers

at the end of the day

my days… continues the tradition of relationships… family… love…

familial ties bonds and tribulations

being a Salem’ite

Salute

Patrick !
you do so love your soap!
I like seeing that 🙂
hope it has a loooong run !

Proof that great writing and storytelling will bring on the ratings. B&B has been killing it this year especially with the Maya and Rick storyline. Well done B&B!

surprise, surprise…. young and the restless lost viewers!? nooo……..
you mean fake jack having heart to hearts with genoas finest when the viewers know he s a fake isnt touching?
real jack realizing cuckoo kelly who was once torn and full of grief but suddenly over the top looney and dead isnt exciting?
nikki off the wagon after she desperatly forces neil to an aaa meeting and consquently kils christines baby but doesnt learn her lesson again, isnt must see tv?
sharon pathetic again for another of nicks relative not romantic enough?
victor not evil enough with no ounce of remorse?
wow… that was fast, the viewers are already over pratts fill the plot holes with characters no matter if it makes no nsense at all.
i hope jfp s contract doesnt get renewd and that pratt runs out of material , not like that would stop him from recycking past plots or writing crap anyways!

oh shucks

3 points

#1. “… sharon pathetic again “… this has to be the all time biggest fan outcry

#2. “… viewers are already over pratts fill the plot holes ” he fills them with dung

#3. “… he s a fake isnt touching ” Peter Bergman… has been reduced… wow that’s spiral

I will forever lament, stronghold, and soapbox… “I cant’ stand what has happened to #1”

There are just too many twists and turns over at Y&R now. It becomes difficult to follow and after you start to not care about the characters who are already not acting like themselves. Well, this is where I am finding myself these days, and it gives me a headache to watch.

B&B is great right now, I just hope we’re not slipping into a Liam Steffy Ivy nightmare triangle.

Yeah, it’s happening. Lol

It’s a shame Days didn’t do better. Hopefully these great stories by these stupendous writers will deliver more eyeballs.

The only problem I have with this story is how Maya and Rick have been so God awful to everyone and now suddenly were supposed to root for them.

Who said you have to feel sorry for them? Examine why Rick has been awful to them. Did Caroline, Ridge and Ivy do anything to him? To Maya?

What’s to examine, they were horrible to everyone. I don’t feel sorry for them, I cant root for them because they are hideous human beings. Little Ricky is his mother’s son through and through.

Rob, I totally agree with you. Also, because Rick has been such an incredible jerk to everyone (as you say), I was fully expecting him to reject Maya once the truth was revealed. BTW, if someone shoots a gun in my presence and/or is condescending to me, I don’t root for him!

I haven’t always enjoyed Brad Bell’s writing, but I think he’s doing a good job with this story. The transgender reveal has happened and it’s now taking a small backseat to the corporate maneuvers with a lot of different pieces to the story: Bill publishing the news about Maya; Steffy’s return and how that impacts Liam, Ivy and Wyatt; Ridge and Eric’s past issues; Ridge and Rick’s past issues; what it means to be loyal and to be family; and Maya and Rick’s love story. I also have to give credit where it’s due to Thorsten Kaye for giving some depth to the corporate storyline. In a lot of ways, he’s leading the cast and IMO is more comfortable as Ridge in this story than I’ve seen him be since he started. He’s doing a great job.

While the storyline on Rick and Maya is attention getting, what happens when the gimmick gets old? This is merely a trend. It’s not necessarily revealing storytelling. I give kudos to B&B for being adventurous. I think the Bell production/writing team has strength but it hardly makes up for the lousy stories they told prior to this. They may have gained audiences but audiences are fickle. They tend to tune out when they get bored. DAYS is solid evidence of that. And all the bitching and moaning about Y&R is doing nothing. Ratings keep climbing and the Pratt/Phelps regime keeps it together. I wish that instead of moaning online they actually stopped watching the show and made the Sony execs take notice.

I LOVE B &B!!! Wonderful acting. I’m 59 and have watched B &B and Y & R since the beginning!! But B &B is the best it’s ever been. All characters are
at their peak!! Now don’t let Ally kill Steffy. Get her some help! I miss Michael Muhney but the new Adam is doing his best.

Steve Kent Reportedly OUT as Sony Pictures Television VP in Charge of DAYS and Y&R

On Friday, reports surfaced that Steve Kent, Senior Executive Vice President of Programming at Sony Pictures Television, is no longer with the company and overseeing the Sony soap operas, Days of our Lives and The Young and the Restless.

According to Soap Opera Digest, a set side source reported that Kent’s last day was last Friday, April 12th, which was one day after what would have been his final appearance in his Sony VP role at the Days of our Lives 15,000th episode on set celebration.

During that ceremony, Kent gave a brief speech giving kudos to DAYS for its incredible milestone. Days is a co-production of Sony Pictures Television and Corday Productions, while Y&R is produced by Bell Dramatic Serial Company in association with Sony Pictures Television.
