RATINGS: Not Good Week For Soaps; DAYS & B&B Down, GH Has Uptick, Y&R Suffers From Pre-Emptions!

Courtesy/NBC

Courtesy/NBC

The ratings are out for the week of June 13th through 17th, and it was a bit of a mishmosh due to pre-emptions and circumstances, as well as one soap hitting another all-time low, and another show bouncing back after a dismal previous week.  All of this came on the heels of one of the most tragic weekends in American history following the events in Orlando; which started with former ‘Voice’ contestant and singer Christina Grimmie being shot, then the largest mass shooting in American history at the Pulse Nightclub, and then a 2-year-old child being taken away by an alligator at Disney World Resort only to be found dead.

So, with all that being said let’s go around the horn with your favorite soaps ratings picture:  Days of our Lives hit another all-time low.  The long running NBC soap came in at its lowest total viewer tally with 2,074,000.  And in household ratings share, it hit an all-time low for the fourth straight week. U nfortunately it also hit rock bottom in the key 18-49 womens demo hitting a new low in total viewers in the category, while tying an all-time low in the ratings share for that demo, as well.

Courtesy/ABC

As for General Hospital, it did have a spike back up of adding of +176,000 viewers for the week, bringing its tally to 2,698,000, and as well being the only soap on the plus side of the 18-49 and 25-54 womens demo in total viewers.  However, this victory by the ABC daytime drama series, comes after it had a bad week the previous ratings where it lost viewers.  And it was Tuesday’s episode of the ratings week where GH scored over 2.8 million viewers that they hopefully get back to on a more consisent basis.

For The Young and the Restless it was an awkward week for the number one soap, which saw their executive producer Jill Farren Phelps being replaced by Mal Young, and then having two major pre-emptions on Monday and Tuesday thus their numbers are off the mark of their usual losing -412,000 viewers from the previous week.  Y&R was also down in all key demo categories, significantly.

Y&R’s sister soap, The Bold and the Beautiful was also down for the week, without noted pre-emptions.  B&B lost – 23,000 total viewers bringing their tally to 3,634,000.

The show did however add total viewers in the 25-54 womens demo, but also tied for an all-time low in ratings share in the 18-49 demos.   View the entire ratings via SON here.

So, what is working for you on your favorite soaps?  What is not?  What adjustments do you think need to be made to make you a more engaged viewers?  What are your thoughts on the ratings picture for the week discussed? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

I recently stopped watching Days. The stories are just terrible. Are we supposed to believe Deimos has that many women falling all over him? Too many Hernandez and now they own TBD. Rafe and Hope are a joke. Aiden’s return has been wasted on them when he could have been paired with someone else. The Ciara character is just a really bad actor and Billy Flynn is stuck with her. Too many things wrong to list. I don’t miss it.

The character of Hope reminds me of the Victor Newman character where he is still given youthful roles. Hope should get her caca together and forget about romance for a bit. She really should come down to earth. What is wrong with these writers? Her age is written all over her face.
Ciara? Don’t get me started. She truly needs a personality change. How about a new actress? Better yet; turn back time and make her a little girl again?

I know what you mean about Hope. She is ALWAYS on the front burner! For many years now she is always in a major story. Kate, Nicole and Maggie? Not so much.

And yes, the actress playing Ciara is horrible. Still upset that they recast her when the young girl was perfect.

I enjoy Hope’s character still. DAYS should work on developing her storyline with Rafe. They could build on their chemistry and create a new Rafe + Hope team. I agree Ciara is too “green” an actress to carry off her scenes and if DAYS wants to connect her with Chad, they have to give us a more “likely” candidate. Example:EJ and Abigail-they were magnetic!

retread here: Kristian Alfonso needs all the help she can get… and she gets some solid support.. from Galen Gering and Daniel Cosgrove.

Rafe and Hope : I think … the writers thought…Rafe and Hope – work – well together… that it would parlay in to a HOT romance… for all I know… they may be romancing each other… ( i’m 14 eps behind) I just don’t see it… how many ways can Rafe be her support group.

Aiden: the chemistry is all their ! and yes i’m coming from how much I “adore” DG… I am in love… with his father/son scenes with nuCHASE… it breaks my heart… that these two may or may not have a long future… for dream acting . I can still see thee at ease and natural still… with … Aiden and Hope.

BAM! I mean really come on… they have all the requisite as a couple. all the elements of a good couple to work with

I – hate – that DAYS went with the rape story! it’s done so much damage to the show… that like.. @Minnie… I just reeled… and lost interest… I had to shut it down. in all total… I have 35 eps on my dvr.

I figure… that by the time DAYS has it’s two week hiatus for the OLYMPIC GAMES… I will have caught up

and … I WILL TUNE IN… for Ryan Quan and Dena Higley.

I can’t even go their… about Jeanne Theresa Donovan “quitting” the show. when a show goes south… I at least could depend on the quality of actors DAYS does have… and yes it does have a ready arsenal… ARGH! Jenn Lilly.. ” I LOVE YOU ”

any way : i’m with so many posts… that Lauren Boles NEEDS to be returned to the show… since Hope is the lady of the hour… having her real daughter back… would mend a lot of wound… heartsick

DAYS has simply got to make that rape go away…

that way… we can keep the SORAS Chase

and you’ve got one of the BEST families back together …

Aiden / Hope / Chase / Ciera ( Lauren Boles )

I am getting excited at the prospect of Paul and Sonny uniting… EXCITING !

I am getting excited about Eve returning… they MUST MAKE her CONTRACT
this is DAYS answer for bringing back to life.. Eduardo and/or Rafe. BAM !

I am super delighted at Shane and Kimberly Brady- Donovan… RETURNING for a LONG story ARC. I was crying reading this in SOD.

DAYS is languishing AGAIN… nothing new for me here… since i’m committed for the long haul

CHEERS SALEMITES

PS: i’m aching for Billy Flynn ‘ CHAD… with all the drama going on with ABS.

PS: bring back another actress… to replace SORAS Ciera

why not bring back one of Maggies granddaughters… to replace Ciera ?

I sincerely agree that the writing on DAYS has gone on “sabbatical”. Or just abducted and won’t come back….
It seems the interest in developing and enriching the “invested” characters is just NOT there anymore!!!
As soon as DAYS signs up a great new actor and they start to have chemistry with another developing character and plot…they rip them out of the cast.

At some point, (SOON) DAYS devotee’s are going to move on and find NEW addictions.

PLEASE PLEASE wake up DAYS. You’ve been around TOO long to let is ALL fade away.

The ratings do not represent if the soap is actually liked.
IF, the ratings showed how much of an episode was actually watched, then and only then would the ratings represent like or dislike.

I FF through much of GH and only watch certain scenes, about 13 mins of the episode.
I watch, I am a number in the ratings, but GH is no longer GH and at times I don’t know what in heck I’m watching, surely not GH..

So– ratings do not show if or if not a soap is good / just that people tuned in even if for just 5-10 minutes.

I would hate to lose a soap and hope all the soaps continue on..

Dark Shadows 50th Anniversary
Decades celebrates the 50th anniversary of gothic soap opera Dark Shadows.
On Monday, June 27, Decades will feature a special anniversary event marking the premiere of the soap opera Dark Shadows. This anniversary tribute comes to Decades 50 years to the day of the first broadcast of Dark Shadows in 1966.
Twelve of the series’ most well known shows will be featured, including the debut episodes of vampire Barnabas Collins.

Dark Shadows transported audiences to the mysterious town of Collinsport, Maine, and they never looked back. Decades remembers the premiere of this cult favorite with the 12 episodes that marked the beginning of the Barnabas storyline, one that propelled the daytime series to new heights.
An episode will also feature interviews with cast members Jonathan Frid (Barnabas Collins), Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans) and Lara Parker (Angelique).

Decades has run Dark Shadows marathons, 3 days 24/7 of the series, this is just celebration of Dark Shadows 50th !!
and– Decades will once again run the 3 day marathon, soon.

Thanks for the info. I used to run home from school or anywhere else to catch the show every day at 4:00 in my time zone (Southern California). Still remember every note of the eerie title tune with the crashing waves. Those were the days!

Do you know what “Venice the Series” is? I’ve seen some hints that DAYS characters (or alumni actors) have been cast on this show, however I can’t find it.

Thanks!

Uh, sorry but ratings are a great representation of whether or not a soap is liked. If people liked it, they would watch. Duh.

Ratings are not a sign of how GOOD a soap is.

I said the ratings do not tell if or if not the soap is liked..
When one FF through it is not enjoyable/liked, just a part or two.
And, the ratings do not reflect if the soap is liked only that someone clicked in. When a person looks in and leaves, it is still counted in the ratings.

I’m curious about how they can judge the age group.

“Surely not GH”!

Actually they can use what’s called incremental ratings. Ratings within the hour the program airs.

GH is terrible and has been ever since Jean and Shelley took over, the show needs new head writers STAT. It’s a chore to watch, I hate feeling this way.

What GH really needs is a new Exec Producer. One who will STOP hiring all the jobless soap stars of years past and PRODUCE a show with the GH cast! Yes, Jean and Shelley are dull writers (except for the Julexis story, and I can’t wait for Alexis to be rid of Julian!) but they are light years better than RC was. I prefer dull with snippets of interesting turns to outlandish and insulting cartoons all the time.

The ratings took “American Idol” off the air.

I still don’t understand why the “Voice” has more popularity with America when American Idol made career artist and the Voice has yet to see results like AI.

To me the worst 2 soaps on the air are DAYS and B&B. They are either high up on camp or so boring that a noon time nap always seems better. The acting on those two shows wastes the talents of some really good cast members. I love Y&R and GH but those two shows are the first ones pre-empted. No surprise that it affects ratings. One major complaint with DAYS is the actress who plays Ciara (who will intentionally remain nameless to protect her feelings) is horrible. She looks as if she is reading her lines off of props. She has no emotion. She might do better in an episode of the The Walking Dead as that is how she presents herself on the show. Never have I seen a show shove a character down the viewers throats that can’t live up to that kind of presentation. Having her get involved with Chad is so awful an idea that makes me wish Chad would go for Paul instead. God knows those two actors can act and are both so attractive. There I said it, I’m done. DAYS is on it’s way out because they can’t seem to catch the clue that they are writing bad stories. Sad state for the dramas but I am all up in Y&R and GH cause they make me glad.

Mateo…Chad and Paul=A VERY, VERY INTRIGUING IDEA!!!!! I mean…why not??? That would TOTALLY hold my interest…and it would make me wanna start watching DOOL again on a regular basis. Which is more than I can say for the current DRECK on there!!!!!

Have a good one, Mateo.

Chad and Paul? That would make me start watching again. Or how about J.J. and Paul. Ah, who am I kidding? There’ll never be another Woodstock either.

Well, since Chad is straight, I hardly think that he would go for Paul. If they do a story like that, it tends to give the casual viewer an overall impression that being gay is simply a choice. I would rather see Sonny return and stir things up with Paul.
As for the young actress who plays Ciara, unfortunately I agree she is dreadful. Obviously, the fans of Days of Our Lives have all expressed a similiar verdict on the way this character is being depicted. Aside from acting skills, the rape scene was unnecessary and not well executed by the inexperienced actors involved.
That being said, this show needs help – and some stronger storylines. I mean how many more times can Brady and Theresa walk into a room and have Victor grunt “ugh” at the thought of their wedding, it is a little monontonous.

I couldn’t agree more. I was HOOKED to Days in 2010-2012, and to B&B in 2014 and early 2015. But for months–years now, even–the soaps have been so lackluster and boring. If there is anything good or interesting, it either doesn’t last very long or goes down “the black hole”.

I agree that the ratings do not indicate that a soap is good. All 3 of the soaps I watch (days, y&r, gh) are all struggling right now. I end up FF most of every episode. I’m annoyed with everything on GH right now. I think that Billy and Phyllis are hot on Y&R so I’m interested in their affair but frustrated with everything else. And on days I actually loved Rafe and Hope when they had a romance developing. I thought they were sweet and I loved Galen Gering finally have a romantic storyline again. But since Aiden has been back I’ve hated the way that hope has been acting so I end up skipping most of her stuff now too.

Get it together soaps!!!! I love you and don’t want to see another soap go off the air!!!!

the creative of the two sony soaps are pretty bad right now. i’ve never seen Y&R and Days this bad

I agree with you Robert about Y&R. I Have been a huge fan since the mid eighties, and to me it’s pitiful. They dragging the stories on way l longer than necessary. I have always been a huge fan of Adam and Chelsea. But this is getting ridiculous. How long can Victor keep doing whatever the hell he wants, especially from jail and not get away with it. I really think that Jess Walton needs to come back on a permanent basis. I know long time fans were thrilled and saddened at the same time over the way to brief stay she had in may. I think by having Jill come back, it will give the writers more opportunity to bring back some of the “vets”. Jill is connected to the Abbotts as well as Michael and Lauren. Not to mention the wonderful cat fights we would get to see with her and Nikki. She cwn bring Colin with her, and Lily and Cane could focus on something other than Hilary. I just turn the show on these days out of habit, but it doesn’t really give me the same thrill as it once did. They need to restoke the fire so to speak.

Robert, I agree with you and soap Queen forever on the Y&R problem. Adam facing jail AGAIN. Phyllis a two-timing slut, AGAIN. Sharon being her own worst enemy, AGAIN. Victor calling the shots STILL. Genoa City Police are dumber than dirt….STILL. Me hitting FAST FORWARD Again.

I disagree Sarah as far as Y&R. The Phyllis & Billy stuff repulses me, so I FF thru any of their scenes. They would never do that to their beloved Jack. They are making a fool/mockery of the legacy Jack character like they did with that Marco Acnacelli (sp?) crap. Very sad.

I think the ratings on B & B are because soaps are widely watched by women and there trying to make a rape into a love story in an era when rape is a big issue out there (colleges, high schools even work places). Nobody is ever going to agree to liking a love story between Caroline & Thomas the rapist. The only reason for them calling it a love story is because they don’t want to get rid of him. General Hospital has both good & bad days but I think it’s by far the best soap on right now. I don’t watch Days of our life so I can’t comment & Y & R having ratings down doesn’t surprise me at all. Leave Adam alone for gosh sake. The story is going on too long. I want to see Victor get caught & sent down the river.I love Billy & Phyllis and Victoria has a hunk of a boyfriend. He should be a keeper. Enough of Summer (H.K.) & her Luca. I thought she was suppose to be recurring? She been recurring every day with another front burner story. Is she the producer yet?

Days needs to write out the teen set until better actors is found-they should had never aged the children- characters like Paige, J.J., Bev and Rory were enough to attract younger viewers and they were better actors in those parts…V.I. as Deimos does not fit in as a K…he should had been a Dimera…i have mixed feelings about Rafe’s family-im for diversity but they seem a little overwhelming at times…Aiden should date Nicole for brief time to see if that worked as Hope and Rafe realize they are better as just friends…Summer and that girl with Rafe-why?

I agree with your opinions and recommendations, especially writing out the current teen set. There is something going on there. They fire everyone the audience likes – i.e., Eve, Paige, Aidan and have no rootable couples now that Abigail left. I don’t have a problem with the Hernandez clan, it’s Hope I am sick to death of. She’s old enough to be Rafe’s mother – how stupid to pair them. This Aidan story is too convoluted. Just admit you were stupid to fire him and bring him back as a new character. I love Billy Flynn and hope they get him a great new Abby and just one POSITIVE LOVE STORY. Victor is a creep, tune him out with his wife. It’s time they retired and cruised the world. Smarten up the pack of handsome dumb hunks who also happen to have talent and stop using them all for window dressing. Kayla and Patch are tired, give them a rest.

The major negative though, in my opinion – any problem that takes six months to fix in the 21st century – just forget about it. They should just shut down production till they catch up and do a one month gap between story, reaction and correction – like everyone else. Buy some decent lighting and clothing. Stop murdering, maiming and substance abusing characters every other day and give us at least two decent couples to care about. I don’t think that’s too much to ask in return for my loyalty..

Sorry, but nobody I know liked Paige, and very few liked Eve.

I miss the days of JJ, paige, rory and beverly with Theresa mixed in from time to time. Days was so good and entertaining then.

GH has had some good moments but the Huxley character and that Kathy Bates impersonator with him was disappointing and just seems stupid and pointless… whats with this Ava suddenly with a stolen statue-hopefully its not an elephant…why not utilize characters you have instead of having newbies-Mac and Felicia on a trip could had seen Nik and try to prove he is alive as Nik avoids them at every turn…seeing Monica used more-yes…but Laura’s mystery whatever it is or was has fizzled…Tracy said she doesnt like to see a new doctor but yet she barely knows Finn who she suddenly became attached to so quickly- like a dog with its new chew toy!!!

I didn’t know the Huxley actor before so I’m not disappointed in him as some who know of his previous work. I kinda like his character; it hearkens back a bit to the campy pRts of GH which we haven’t had in a while and mixes things up a bit. And for some reason I thought Big Bertha chRging T Nicolas ans Ava was stupidly hilarious.

I’m srangely intrigued by the Nicolas replacement/AJ lookalike. the first day he was on I thought he was great and took over seamlessly…then his acting veered off a bit to “rehearsed” as opposed to natural. yet I find myself interested in watching him…

you are SO RIGHT about the Laura mystery. it’s beyond ridiculous. maybe the writers are still trying to figure it out. very poor planning in terms of laying out story…

On the other hand I disagree with you regarding Tracy. It makes sense she has taken to Finn. The other doctor is a pompous ass ( and probable murderer) who point blank told her she had a brain tumor; Finn is the one who figured out what was wrong with her, saved her life, showed her compassion, played cards with her while she was healing…who wouldn’t want a doctor/friend like that???

Felicia and Mac? Who? Sigh….

To bad when SK quit as AJ-they didnt get NS to replace him…I dont believe Finn is the victim he pretends to be…i think he is using Tracy…Finn’s allegedly dead wife is not dead and Finn isnt dieing-he is experimenting for a cure to treat his ‘dead’ wife…he is keeping her ‘alive’ in a cryogenic chamber and is using Tracy to find a cure in hopes of reviving her…his wife will be played by Melissa Archer-ok,im joking-lol

Still searching for Laura’s story!

I was a fan of GH in the late seventies to mid eighties and for unknown reasons after that I stopped and didn’t pick it up again until the 50th anniversary nurses ball show and got hooked on the Sabrina and Patrick storyline. With thst said, I wad excited about Kevin and Laura possibly getting a storyline. Especially when they were scouring the disco for clues and the name Lucy Johnson was mentioned. But of course nothing that I know of had come of it yet. I thought maybe they could have done a whole Whittkers Beechers Corners thingg for old time sake. But instead they keep on bringing in new characters, without making use of the talent they already have. The pace is to slow. That is why I have not watched in a month and I am not sure if I will or not again.

Absolutely Jimh!
They could’ve given those roles to unnamed actors who are trying to break into the business. That was an embarrassing waste. Their accents were horrendous!!!!
The cast is sooooo large (and ever expanding–much like our universe), that it’s weeks before you see the characters you care about and by then who cares?!?!

pre-emptions aren’t the only reasons Y&R and Days are hitting lows. the storylines are terrible. Y&R and Days have fallen in the ratings this year and i don’t blame people for not watching. even on days Y&R and Days weren’t pre-empted,their numbers weren’t very good. Pratt is very terrible. the women are being made to look like crap. with Phelps gone, lets hope we can get better stories

Y&R is a disaster!

Y&R is a disaster even with Phelps being gone it isn’t helping matters that Pratt is still in the building. I just hope mal can fix this mess soon.

And they can start with getting rid of Summer.

I know, Timmm. If I have to watch one more scene where Business Executive Supreme aka Summer flies into Victoria’s office with some Harvard Business School insight she learned WHERE exactly? On the back of a spritzer of hair spray?

You’ve got that right. Pre-emptions are the least of Y&R’s problems. Who hijacked my soap? Its almost unwatchable at this point. Sad.

Where’s all the family scenes at on GH. Where’s all the friendships scenes at. Where’s all the drama at. GH just sucks these days.

I’m with you there, cooks. I find myself watching every day feeling anxious and uncomfortable, just waiting for the next unpleasant thing to happen. Then I read a spoiler about Jason getting knocked out again? How many head wounds can this poor guy survive? What do they want now…is he supposed to remember someone ELSE’S life now? And, please let Billy Miller and Chad Duell grow their hair out, even a little. They both look like they’re about to enlist…and not in a good way.

I love Genie Francis and wish they would get on with her mystery storyline but it was just dropped. She is back to babysitting Spencer.

You want Genie? Watch “I dream of Genie!”

The way they are using Genie Francis is just ridiculous. This woman is SO good if they would just write something for her! Instead they have her in these lame, milktoast, start and stop stories. She hasn’t had good drama since 2008 on this show. Have to wonder what the heck kind of contract she signed to be on camera for two minutes in aggregate every two or three weeks. What was the point.

Of course GH had an uptick…because they lost nearly 300K viewers the week before. When you have an outlier week like that, there will be an inevitable “regression to the mean” …meaning numbers will return closer to their average. So, these numbers (although, they look good on the surface) are not necessarily reflective of a good week. In fact, GH has lost 100K total viewers over the past 2 weeks — and had 3 days under 2.0 in daily ratings. That is pretty low for GH averages. Next week, although, will be a better reflection on how things are going. The past two weeks have had abnormal losses and gains, which can be misunderstood if you just look at the -276K and +176K.

hi Elle..
thanks for the run down.. it put meaning to the numbers..

Interesting though that all the categories went up last time out except 18-34 female which went down? Actually worse than that, 18-34 female demo share tied the lowest ever for GH. I didn’t see any mention of that in the article. It’s that rather than any “increases” that will have ABC meeting over it. Only question is whether it’ll be a conference call or take place in a conference room.

I’d love to be a fly on the wall to know what Ken Corday and NBC/Sony executives really think of these ratings for Days. It’s very sad to see how this show has been destroyed with awful writing, perhaps permanently. But honestly, it’s well deserved. It just goes to show that in any business, you can’t keep treating legions of longtime fans like total crap and expect them to keep being loyal to your product as well as attract new younger fans. I think at this point that all of the actors and crew members with Days would be well-advised to brush up their resumes in the coming months.

I hate to be cynical and negative about this genre, but quite frankly, looking at the key demos, I can’t help but wonder what ABC will do with GH if indeed NBC puts Days out of its misery next year.

Yeah with these all time low ratings I don’t think Days will be around next year.

I’m familiar with the name Ken Corday, but what I don’t get is why can’t he get fired???

I watch a little bit of all four soaps, and I’m not surprised the ratings are down, though I take no pleasure in saying that. I stopped watching DOOL a long time ago, right when Vincent Irizarry started and his character was poorly written, with a nonsensical backstory that I couldn’t invest in. I do watch the special episodes with Matt Ashford and Peter Reckell returning, but MA should be back fulltime, and Hope’s romantic prospects are rather dull without Bo, though I understand Peter Reckell wants to raise his daughter fulltime in Tennessee. I want to like Y&R more than I do, but something isn’t working there. Maybe it’s Victor being behind bars, or me not being into any of the couples, but the stories are rather blah. However, I am looking forward to the fallout of Billy/Phyllis’ affair. There had better be some juicy explosions there.

B&B has spent a huge amount of time in 2016 taking old scripts from past years and changing the names to fit Liam/Steffy/Wyatt, although they don’t need to change any names for Brill and Katie. They’re just flat-out re-doing a story that was hard to stomach the first time around. What B&B needs desperately is new talent on the canvas, so that we don’t see the same characters circling the same characters over and over again. I wish someone, anyone would call out Brad Bell and say that B&B, for all of its lavish international trips and quality sets, doesn’t have the money to hire a new man for Brooke or Katie. When the last 3 or 4 actors hired on contract by B&B are all unknowns under the age of 26, who come at a cheaper price than a Ted King or a Jon Hensley, you have to start to think that B&B isn’t nearly as financially successful as it claims to be, despite money coming in from licensing rights overseas. Painful as it is to say it, Rena Sofer’s character is too nutty to stay on canvas, so if her salary was freed up to pay for a new leading man on the show, I’d be all for it.

As for GH, they’re making some very, very risky moves with Julexis, and they have much too large a cast. Michelle Stafford, talented actress that she is, has to be costing GH alot of money, and considering the story she’s in now, which featured gags with a vibrator, it’s pretty much a waste. I can’t imagine it lasting that much longer if it doesn’t find its way, and fast.

I love Days- I have done watched thiscshowcsince I was a kid and gave not missed one single episode in over thirty years. I would be bereft if it was ever canceled. That being said, I cannot imagine anyone other than a long time, loyal viewer tuning in anymore. Seriously, the storylines have not been this bad since the very early 90’s when Melinda Clark played Faith Taylor. First and foremost the actress who plays Ciara and the actor who plays Theo are just plain terrible actors. They HAVE to stop rapping six months ahead so they can see of their actors and storylines aren’t working. I’m glad to see that they are finally giving Mary Beth Evans a storyline of sorts. They really need to do the same with Deidre Hall. She is the most recognizable and valued cast member, not to mention supremely talented, but they have not used her wisely in story for YEARS now. The series needs better writing and Corday needs to become more actively involved in producing the day to day aspects of the show.

I am a fairly “new viewer” of Days of Our lives, meaning that I started watching just to get my “soap” fix when All My Children was cancelled. At first, I really liked it because of Will and Sonny, with Paul thrown into the mix plus I liked Sami with EJ and Paige –
but you see, all these characters (well most) are off the canvas, and frankly, now the show is just AWFUL – it’s so draggy and the big fuss about Deimos is something that escapes me. The writing is dreadful (I’m sorry to say) and the storylines just don’t do anything for me currently.
Maybe – if they bring back a new story around Sonny and Will and work on some stronger storylines, it will help – this show really does need help.

Typo above- “They have to stop taping six months ahead…..”

Days has always been my favorite soap. I tape both Days & Y&R – have never watched the other two. I find Y&R to be atrocious right now. Same old story lines over and over again . The Billy & Phyllis pairing makes no sense, etc. Only watch now to check out the female casts fabulous clothes

All four shows are terrible and should be put out to pasture. I am watching old gl episodes on YouTube for my soap fix.

My friend feels that is exactly the plan of the powers that be. They are making the soaps so cheap, so unwatchable that the audience will be relieved to see them cancelled. From what I’ve seen of DOOL and Y&R, I have to agree with her assessment.

Thank goodness for YouTube. I watch classic episodes of One Life to Live and am totally entertained.

What period of oltl are you watching? I’m watching early 90s gl which wasn’t exactly a golden era but it brings back nice memories.

and I watch old (read “classic”) GH scenes on youtube!

Mark,

I’m watching mostly the late 90s, from the revelation of full extent of Viki’s dissociative identity disorder, and the 2000s. I’ve also watched scenes from the 80s with Delila and Rafe and Becky Lee and Bo and Didi O’Neill, and Jenny and David Rinaldi. So many wonderful characters and stories. I will always love One Life to Live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah there are sooo many great Guiding Light years on youtube. GL in 1991 and 1992 were perfection. 1997 was an amazing year also.

GH is HOT right now… Loved when the cops showed up at Brad and Lucas’ wedding and Carly snidely said “oh look the cops.” Nina spread out all over the desk was also hilarious.

I thought it was hilarious too, lol.

Hi, Phil,
Yes, Carly’s line was humorously sarcastic; and not so subtle, which made its impact even funnier.
But, as I have already mentioned, I am still romancing Paul Hornsby’s line…” About that Huckleberry guy…..”, said he…. and Anna answered, ” it’s Sawyer!”. LOL.
I replayed it for my husband and he said the same thing I had, about the writers’s uncanny and cheeky witticism. One of the best lines EVER, on a sosp, in my humble opinion.
It’s refreshing to see that the ‘classics’, surreptitiously, make their presence known….good ole Samuel Clemens; aka Mark Twain!!

I wish I could share your same enthusiasm with that line. I mean it was funny, but not a fan of the Paul character… nor the actor!

Maybe these writers–schooled in Mark Twain–could put a few characters on a raft and float them down river! LOL!

Well, now, nancy…too funny. And, pretty clever. By the same token, whoever is at the helm, should swing by DOOL. My favorite river, down which these characters would travel besides the Mississippi, is the River Styx…..which I mention on many of my comments. LOL.

Phil, LOL….this has nothing to do with the actor; I can take him or leave him. He is not ‘major’ for me.
I am talking about the writer, who came up with this clever word-play, from one of the most universally read authors . And, not to dismiss Richard……his delivery was tops.

Nina is just repulsive to me and that sex toy sure didn’t help.

Harry, I think you are missing the point of the character. Nina has always been presented as childlike in nature as a result of her coma. Her reaction to the second toy was well within character.

In general summer time is the dullest time of the year for soaps, stories don’t rev up until August.

It is obvious Days is just putting on filler to bridge the gap after Josh quit and the new writers stuff airs in August. Days most likely dumped most of Josh’s stuff since they knew the new writers would not follow through, so they either came up with temp stories or they stretched out some Josh’s old stuff, but either way it is filler. It keeps the ship afloat, but it ain’t going anywhere. If this pace continues after the Olympics when the new writers stuff begin, then Days will be in real trouble– but right now, it is just coasting, NBC knows it, Sony knows it, the cast knows it, viewers know it and ratings show it.

I don’t mind GH– right now it is like the white bread of soaps. It might be bland but still gets the job done. It could use a bit of flavor to make it a bit more interesting, but it beats vampires and mad scientists that freeze people and bring them back to life.

Over at CBS– my trick to watching B&B is not to watch it everyday. If you watch it everyday, you will go mad, but in small doses it is fine. And since most episodes are saying the same thing as the last one, you really don’t miss much if you don’t watch everyday, and if things pick up or a particular story gets good, you can indulged a bit more, but B&B is like the junk food of soap– a little is great, too much makes you sick.

Y&R is improving– the dialogue no longer makes my ears bleed and characters are becoming a little less stereotypical, but still a long way to go to get back to where it used to be in rounding out the characters. And story wise there is enough stuff right now holding my attention

I’m looking forward to finding out Victor hired Chloe to frame Adam. I like to see Chloe back, with the original actress if possible– want to see the reveal when Billy finds out she had his baby. I like Travis– is he a nice guy or playing Vicky? I don’t know why they had to have Sharon go off her meds just so she can see Sage everywhere– bipolar is a mood disorder it doesn’t make you hallucinate- you make poor choices but you don’t have a reality break– this unrealistic approach to her illness is making a otherwise okay story more absurd than it has to be–

Victor Newman had the right to recall and cross-examine every witness “family member” that testified against him in the courtroom. I don’t understand why the writers waited until after Victor was sentenced to set his revenge in motion. I want scenes with Chloe and Patty.

How do you know it’s Chloe? I kept thinking, “who could it be?” And as soon as Kevin got into this, I figured it had to be someone he knew and that it wasn’t either Natalie nor Mariah… ta da, “Chloe, it might be.” But I don’t recall what happened to her character last year when she returned for a few episodes. I also thought Esther would be stupid enough but she’d never sit there MUTE… never ever. And, she couldn’t follow directions to save her life much less frame someone.

But back to the original question: what is working for me? Not a single storyline.

I don’t know for sure, but it seems the logical guess. Victor mentioned that to this mystery woman she had a reason to hate Adam– well Chloe has that reason, he ran over her daughter and didn’t go to jail for it.

The last we saw Chloe she was sent back to a mental health hospital for trying to murder Adam by running him over with her car, so she has an unstable mind that will allow her to do things without conscience. Also Kevin says how much the woman in the tapes from jail footage looks like Natalie, well Natalie and Chloe could be sister. And finally, Victor history of exploiting the vulnerability of damage people to do his bidding.

Chloe is the only established character that fits, as well as you said they brought Kevin into it and he has a history with Chloe and now that Phyliss and Billy are hooked a new obstacles has to come, and Chloe presenting Billy with a new daughter would be one.

Of course Chloe could be a red herring, the show suggesting it will be her, but then it is someone else. So,If it isn’t Chloe my next best guess would be Sky, Adam’s ex wife who went into the volcano– perhaps she survived after all. And a really remote character they might use would Richard Roundtree’s wife, the man Adam used to fake his death who died in the explosion at the club a few years back.

I’m sorry you are not enjoying any stories on the show, but honestly compared to other three soaps, Y&R is positively riveting next to them. That doesn’t meant Y&R is good, it just means the other three are so bad it make Y&R look better in comparsion. What I like is they toned the show – a while back everyone was acting loud and over the top, shouting their lines and since then it is like everyone took a Valium and calmed down and are speaking like normal people again, so my ears are very thankful that small mercy.

Mary SF: You have excellent rationale here! I may not be enjoying any of the storylines, but I do agree that the “yelling” tone has been reduced to a tolerant level! I have watched the show from the beginning and am aware of how Bill Bell and Kay Alden shaped the stories that made the show famous, including such memorable characters. I am weary of all the espionage-type escapades. Enough said, right?

I certainly understand why DOOL is at down. The stories are dull. Everything moves at a snails pace and doesn’t go anywhere. What was the 15 minutes flu epidemic about? The dialog is lifeless. The teen actors are simply not experienced enough to manage such prominent roles. (I tried to be polite.) I’m not invested in any of the current story lines. I was happy to see Lucas and Adrienne earlier in the week. I really like those two characters and wish they’d give them something worthwhile to do. The only reason I’m sticking around is to see Kassie DePaiva’s return. When she leaves again, I’m gone too.

LoL, yes honestly what exactly WAS that 15 minute Flu epidemic –
The storylines are dreadful – this show, I’m so sorry to say, pales in comparison to the times of One Life to Live and/or All My Children – yes, soap plots can be silly, I know that – and maybe soaps in general have “had their day” I don’t know for sure – but honestly, Days of Our Lives could be so much better – it’s so dull that when I was watching the scenes between Deimos and that dark haired gal, I think her name is Chloe, I was thinking…..what am I watching? It’s soo boring – I wish I could FF on the NBC app but I can’t seem to do that – LoL

That’s why I record it Tim. I just fast forward through all the stuff I’m not interested in. Oh wait, that’s 3/4 of the show.

I agree with Michael and everyone else that Ciara is a terrible actress; however, I disagree with Michael about Theo . I think that he’s one of the best teen actors.

You could’ve clicked Michael’s reply button, Belle.

Anyway, I see good and bad acting by VJ as Ciara and I agree that the Theo actor is good. I sometimes think viewers forget that Theo is a high functioning autistic.

I agree, Belle. I have remarked, many a time, what an engaging actor Kyler Pettis is. He has such a presence: looks, personality, acting skills. He will be going places.
The rest of the teens leave a lot to be desired. Nothing tangibly fantastic about them.

I’ve been following the spoilers for dool and I’m not impressed, Sonny and Paul really. Paul is nothing but a home wrecker who knew sonny was married but still went after him anyway. Will wasn’t even buried long enough before they had sonny and Paul planning a date. The writing sucks I really hope it does get canned and I hope the sonny and Paul thing really back fires

It’s really hard to keep interested in the soaps I watch. I’m GH girl. But like many have noted on MF just too many stories with loose ends that either never get resolved, or are put on the shelf for so long that I lose interest. Really frustrating when there seems to be great potential like Laura and Kevin. Also too many actors to follow, especially because of all of the different mini-stories, too much crime with no consequences, or no relevance to the spirit of GH.

Then by default I started watching B&B and Y&R. It only took a couple of years to see that B&B is mainly “romantic” musical chairs with the same characters. But must admit they had a few storylines thrown in that have had great acting.

Then there’s Y&R which is dominated by a Victor the same way GH is by Sonny/Carly. It would be hard to have either of these soaps without these key characters, but their egos, “do anything for my family,” no consequences, get really old quick.

At the same time it must be really hard to come up with new ideas to keep soaps fresh and still keep to the soap’s tradition…5 times a week, 24/7. Seems to me a great opportunity for scripted soap writers, as long as they find a good balance between number of actors; established and newbis; stories; and keeping to each shows tradition/ legacies.

Days Fall was great it was Days as we love it.
In the winter Days grew unrecognizable! The stories were bad, too many new characters thrown into the spotlight instead of slow integration. Horrible editing and pacing. Days threw every woman into Deimos its become a bad joke, why is Dario still on?, how did Kayla become a shrew whose one line is all negativity toward Steve no matter what the man does, assassins profit, the teen stories are inane instead of human!

I think its obvious the writers are fighting with each other, what airs should not!

Y&R is just terrible! Seriously, it takes me 15 minutes to watch, these days! Anything involving the Winters clan, FF! Jack Abbott is a moron! Anything Victor does to him he deserves! Billy and Red make my stomach turn, FF! Glummer and Kookus,FF! Dylan is a super cop now but cannot “Detect” that his wife is off her rocker? All that bartender/Wallstreet wiz is’ is a Billy Miller wanna be! Oh and Adam, he goes to jail,Victor gets out, blah, blah, blah! Terrible!

Everything you said, Timmmy. I instinctively groaned when I heard Neil say to Jack…”I know you are a very moral guy….”, ….something like that, anyway. Really? It’s like everything else on these remaining soaps. We are to completely erase the history of the shows and their characters.
When did Jack morph into such a model of high moral standards? And, yes, he is an idiot…..being cockooled right under his nose. Well; fool me once….
About super cop. Well now. He goes from a shell-shocked, sort of crazed veteran, without seeking extensive therapy, to detective without the academy or doing the allotted years to become a detective, in a New York minute.
Furthermore, he is so superior that within a couple of short months he has underlings, where they report to him as if he’s been doing this for years.
I said the same thing, Timmm. It’s a vicious circle. Victor’s story is the same. Now, we see Adam carrying the torch; as you so well indicate….in jail, out of jail; in jail, out of jail.
Well, at least Nikki hasn’t fallen off the wagon. Won’t hold my breath!

Hi Celia,

1. I know. Y-e-p. Any-hoo, Right after Neil had said that to Jack, I couldn’t wait until the next batch of commercials to hold or contain my laughter…LOL!!!!! Moral guy…N-O-T!!!!!
2. ‘In a New York minute’…SO PAINFULLY TRUE!!!!! My dear…more and more, waiting for an order at a fast-food joint takes longer than that. Y-e-p.
3. Oh…as I said to Tim in a recent post on this site (a few posts below), how many more times can Sharon ‘go off her rocker’?!?!?!?!?! SO OLD AND TIRESOME!!!!! Make. It. Stop.

Later, my friend.

Yes, Timm–I feel the same way.
There is so much to say and if I have to see one more scene in which Chloe and Adam speak of having to fight for him to stay with his family….well, I don’t know what I will do. I seem to have written myself in a corner which is what the Y&R writers seem to be doing.

Chloe is coming soon! You met Chelsea and I agree Harry! How many ways can she act in a scene about her husband is innocent and he needs to be with his family! Snoring!

Y&R needs to purge itself of the horrid by Chuck Pratt & company. It is terrible TV and some of the worst dialogue I’ve ever seen on the show. CBS must be sick of this garbage and has supported it as much as possible, yet the audience is leaving. Why must we watch a 75 year old fossil make out and sex up a 40 year old woman? It’s nauseating. The character has no business dominating this show anymore. Enough. Phleps got fired, now Pratt deserves the same fate.

Aw, Tim…W-O-W!!!!! Powerful post, dude…AND EVEN MORE SPOT ON!!!!! OK…some thoughts of my own here…

1. I have a feeling that Victor (unfortunately) will be released sooner or later. Hey…it’s a soap…nobody stays in jail and/or prison FOREVER!!!!! Unless it’s off-camera…LOL!!!!!
2. Dylan is such an EMBARRASSMENT as a so-called cop!!!!! Truly lame.
3. How many more times can Sharon ‘go off her rocker’?!?!?!?!?! BEYOND BLAH!!!!!!!!!!
4. Travis and that whiny, self-absorbed and EVEN MORE ANNOYING Victoria are so RIDICULOUSLY MISMATCHED!!!!! SNOOZE-VILLE ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!
5. At this point, Jack is nothing but a spineless and self-righteous JACKASS!!!!! ULTIMATE FAST-FORWARD!!!!!

Tim…take care, dude.

I will never understand the six-month gap between production and air dates for DAYS. Makes no sense for a daytime serial. I do wish days in Salem would be a little sunnier. It is the one serial that seems to have that solid family reality grounding that makes soaps appealing to me. Really, the core tenets of successful daytime drama have not changed in 60 years. Execs seem to want to monkey with things that should be let be.

DOES ANYONE LIKE ANYTHING?

WHEN IS THE NEW WRITING INTRODUCED?

I enjoy Kevin and Mariah, Dr. Neville, Ashley is holding. Whoever that antagonist to Victor is in the jailhouse (Ian?) is great but the writing isn’t letting his charm emerge.

DOOL’s all time low ratings reflect how horrible the stories are. At this pace I don’t expect it to be renewed next year.

I know, blake. I truly wish that this ‘thing’ with Rafe and Claudia evolves and is explored. She is the complete oppodite of Hope. Gee….sorry, but could it be her age? Hope offers nothing but doom and gloom; a flighty and volatile personality.
This is what DOOL needs…some fun….some sunlight shining bright on these depressing people that live in Salem .LOL.

when will Ken Corday bring in Ron Carlivati to bring life and humor back to this boring terribly written Days….and please turn on the lights….the show is so dark….stop bringing in all the Hernandez characters and shift focus back to the original core families….and for the life of Salem, please return to traditional taping of a month to six weeks in advance…stop with this half a year taping…..so much easier to fix storylines that dont’ work when the shows are close to the dates airing…..Corday just got a star on the Walk of Fame…surely he can “fix” this show??????

The Bold & The Beautiful – so many complaints, so little time…
1. They had an opportunity to redeem the character of Quinn an give us a couple to root for by pairing her with Liam. Yes a May/December romance, which they have done before, but I don’t recall much about those characters because it was a few years back. Rena is gorgeous and definitely doesn’t look her age. But instead of giving us quality writing and romance they pair her with Eric. ERIC!!! Eric is 2000 years old!!! No offense to John McCook 🙂 I guess it is a May/December romance – just not the one I was expecting. I threw up in my mouth just a wee bit when i saw them kiss.
2. Brook – nuf said.
3. Corday & Bell should check out this site and see some of the great ideas the loyal soap fans on here have for storylines.
4. I-I-I gotta get a life.
5. The End. Thanks for listening.

Please get rid of Jasam, killing the show and ratings.

The ratings are low on B&B and DOOL for one reason and one reason only: REALLY bad writing! Why bring back Aiden for a romance with Hope–having a double be responsible for the attack on her–when he has suddenly become a liar and a conniver? And no, I didn’t like Hope & Rafe. Boring, and she is too old for him. Rafe needs a good storyline, maybe pair him with Nicole. She doesn’t deserve to be saddled with the crappy Deimos thing. The teen set is mostly boring, although Joey is a good actor, and I enjoy Claire and Theo. The Summer storyline is absolutely dreadful. What was the point of this witch being brought to Salem? To make Victor more cranky? To make Brady and Theresa fight even more? For Maggie to keep crying a lot? Dumb!

B&B is equally bad. Ridge and Caroline is awful. I can’t believe the stunt they pulled on poor Thomas! Where the heck is Ivy? And why is Liam still going after Slutty–I mean, Steffy?! This has been going on since 2010—six years now! ENOUGH! Nobody cares! Let her be happy with Wyatt! He, like Katie, always seems to be “rewarded” for his mostly good behavior with heartbreak. Speaking of Katie, why is this heart-transplant (her bro’s heart at that) victim drinking instead of taking care of her child? And is anyone really into the stupid storyline of Brooke and Bill? This back-and-forth stuff has been going on since 2013–three years now! It was bad back then, and is even worse right now.

I can’t speak much about Y&R except that I watched in 2014 for a short time and liked it back then, but lost interest a few months later. Seems like nothing has much changed.

Days of our Lives Star, Greg Vaughan, Gives Health Update and Thanks Everyone for Their Support

Greg Vaughan (Eric, Days of our Lives, ex-Lucky, GH, and ex-Diego, Y&R) provided an update on his health on Sunday, March 17th. Vaughan had previously shared that he had become ill during a trip with his sons to Colorado, and had developed altitude sickness when he was having trouble breathing accompanied by terrible headaches and landed in the urgent care.

Now on St. Patrick’s Day, Greg took to his Instagram and shared how he is feeling now, and to thank everyone for their love and support.  As it turned out, Vaughan was diagnosed with high altitude pulmonary edema, commonly known as HAPE. However, he is on the mend slowly and surely.

In his new video post, the DAYS favorite started by expressing, “I just felt such an appreciation and gratitude for everything. . reaching out. Your prayers have been felt. It’s been a struggle, but I’m over the top. And, taking this moment just to say I didn’t realize the things that I was going through. My (original) post was simply just to educate, put some information out there and some things that I was feeling, just share that information and the struggle that I was going through, which I didn’t quite understand. And it wasn’t because I’m stubborn or just because I’m a father, a man, and didn’t want to go to a doctor. It is just something I thought was so minor that I could overcome it, just by taking care of myself.”

The Daytime Emmy winner then revealed his actual diagnosis, “So, basically my situation was high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). With some good friends, doctors that had reached out to me, it kind of gave me some understanding on the aftermath, which was very, very beneficial.”

“But I’ve been resting, taking care of myself even though I live in a hamster wheel,” said the dad of three teenaged boys. “I gotta get up and, you know, do my normal domesticated stuff, eventually. I’m tired of laying down in this bed, but, I am feeling much better.”

Photo: GVaughanIG

Talking on his confusion of trying to understand what could have been ailing him, Vaughan expressed, “I couldn’t quite figure it out, even though I was emphasizing and professing to my children going on our spring break getaway about hydration. I professed it. But, even though I was acting on it, it had a greater effect on me, and for which I did not even think, because my head was such in pain, and I was in a very bad state of mind – not being able to be out there with my kids on the mountain, enjoying their time, as well. I thought I was doing the right thing. Unfortunately, my lungs were full of fluids and my head was in severe pain and even migraine pills didn’t even help. So, I just want anybody that goes into the Colorado Mountains to know, it is no joke. It is this very serious thing which I guess is why they call it the Mile High City.”

Greg had a mountain of ‘thank you’s’ to give for the outreach he received from his original post, “For everybody internationally, wherever you are, I love you and I appreciate you and just the time and the thoughts that you’ve shared with me,” said Vaughan. “I didn’t realize that it would make such an impression on so many people around the world. I feel tremendously loved and I can’t say it enough. I’m good. And I appreciate you.”

Photo: GVaughanIG

The actor concluded his video with, “To all the family and friends that have reached out to me, man, it means the world. So take care of yourself, enjoy your spring break with your families. It’s Saint Patty’s Day, obviously. I wish I could be out there.” Vaughan added, “I feel loved and touched and I can’t emphasize that enough. I’ll take better care of myself, promise you will do the same.” Before he signed off, Greg shared, “Just know, that I’m alive and well and breathing, and I’m sore. So, be well, take care. I mean it. Thank you, tremendously.”

Glad to know that Greg has been on the mend, and shared his appreciation for everyone that reached out to him during this trying time? Comment below.

Days of our Lives Star Greg Vaughan Shares Sudden Health Scare: “I Truly Feel Like I Work & Live in a Soap Opera!”

What started out as an adventure with his sons, quickly turned into a nightmare for Days of our Lives Daytime Emmy winner, Greg Vaughan (Eric Brady).

In a series of Instagram posts, Vaughan shared the sudden health crisis he found himself in.  The images show Greg with an oxygen tank to help him breathe.

The actor began to fill people, sharing, “I’ve said more than a few times, I truly feel like I work & live in a Soap Opera! 🤪 this trip was nothing short of another great Vaughan adventure!”

He went on to say that on a father and son Colorado spring break trip, he began to feel shortness of breath, feeling tired and with a headache and after two days of hoping he would feel better, Vaughan finally went to an Urgent Care to get checked out.

Photo: GVaughanIG

“I finally surrendered & went to urgent care and to my shock I learned that I was experiencing severe altitude sickness.” Vaughan admitted. “My Blood Oxygen was at 54% & my lungs were full of fluids! Blood oxygen, also known as oxygen saturation, represents the percentage of hemoglobin in your red blood cells that is carrying oxygen. Most people have an oxygen level of 95-100%….”

Providing more detail to his health scare, Greg shared, “Well, 4hrs later, a couple of bags of IV & oxygen tank strapped to my face, I was told that I needed to immediately get off the mountain! However I couldn’t, we still had another day to go & wanting the boys to enjoy their last day on the hill tops! I opted to go home with an oxygen tank, a good laugh for everyone, and I know will follow, but my boys looked after their old man & fortunately they had friends on this trip!”

Photo: JPI

The experience of altitude sickness in the Colorado Rockies gave Vaughan a bit of a new perspective, “In all seriousness, no matter your age, and all the times I’ve ⛷️ & 🏂 in my lifetime, Colorado Rockies is no joke! As they say, ‘ take a breathe and smell the roses!’ That is truly something we need to remember & appreciate! #recover”

Share your well-wishes to Greg as he continues to be on the mend via the comment section below.
