That is because in the latest ratings for the week of December 26-30th, it saw your favorite daytime dramas showing solid gains in total viewers, and for three soaps, across the board in all key womens demos: 18-49, 18-34 and 25-54.

Going up over the 5 million total viewer mark was The Young and the Restless. The CBS Daytime drama now under story from head writer Sally Sussman showed the most significant gains adding + 361,000 for the week. As well, Y&R led the way with the most gains in the demo categories of all four soaps.  Its sister soap, The Bold and the Beautiful went up over the 4 million mark in total viewers adding an a strong +266,000 to its tally.

General Hospital also showed nice gains with +130,00 total viewers giving them over 2.8 million for the week. However in the key demos, GH was the only soap to lose viewers in the 18-49 and 18-34 categories. As well, GH tied an all-time low ratings share ln the 18-34 demo.  GH did see some gains in the 25-54 demo.

And as for Days of our Lives, the NBC soap showed some decent gains at +91,000, making their total viewer tally finally go back up to over the 2.5 million plus mark. DAYS also gained in all key demos.  View the entire ratings picture via SON here.

DAYS has gained 502,000 viewers since their all-time low in July!

But that fox anchor is leaving for nbc and its rumored her show is replacing Days in the fall…

Yes, Jimmy, and if she has three doppelgangers all the soaps could be wiped out. We’ll see.

Megyn Kelly.-I didn’t hear that her show would be replacing Days..

I heard that, as well, Jimmy. I never liked Megyn Kelly ( Kelly File–FOXNEWS)….. now, I like her even less, LOL.
I hope the cancellation is just ‘scuttlebutt’.

”Decisions have not been finalized about when any of Kelly’s new shows will start. She is still under contract at Fox News until July. Then she has a six-month non-compete agreement which means she has to sit out during that time period before going to another network in a similar capacity. That will take her to the end of the year to coincide with the end of the “Days of Our Lives” contract. Therefore, the soap opera should be concerned. It just might be canceled so Megyn Kelly will have the coveted time slot.”
“Days of Our Lives” airs in a primetime slot that would be an ideal time for one of Kelly’s shows.

I’d bet that Days will be moved to the 12pm time slot ..

@CeeCee….””Me Again” really showed her true colors and burned her bridges with the Fox audience after her self-serving “TrumpStunt.” Why any network would consider her worth such a huge investment is beyond me….she certainly won’t bring many fans with her to her new broadcast digs, and if she is designated as the “Days Slayer”–much like Katie Couric was when her contract with ABC killed its daytime soap lineup and usurped GH’s cozy 3:00 niche—then she will fail just as miserably, especially since there is nothing likeable about this phony femme.

killed GH’s cozy 3:00 niche…..

She is not replacing Days she is taking over the third hour of the today show relax don’t let Megan Kelly or anyone else live rent free in your brain! Your show is safe for now!

nice spin. look at the demos. GH is sucking right now. Maxie’s wedding should have been a real spike.

You’re so right.
And if someone could explain to me why in the name of heaven TPTB think the rinse and repeat cycle of Sonny and Carly is remotely interesting, I would appreciate it.
There’s a lot wrong with GH right now but the biggest problem is that Sonny and Carly are redundantly boring and yet, they’re on every friggen day.
And while soap fans disagree about almost every soapy subject under the sun, we all seem to be on the same page when we express our frustration with she show’s focus on Sonny and Carly. I truly believe these two are ruining the show.

Agreed-tired of both the characters and the actors.

I live near Boston and we had some snow over the weekend, so I watched a few episodes (haven’t recorded or watched in months). It’s awful. The writing, the storylines-everything. The only storyline that is somewhat believable is Alexis’ alcoholism storyline. Nancy Lee Grahn, as always, is hitting it out of the park. Insipid Lulu has got to go, and her key stone cop-useless; Sonny and Carly-please, just stop. Franco locking Tom Baker in a dog cage-so ridiculous. Monotone Sam and boring Jason-how many more months must we endure her pregnancy and lackluster P.I. skills? I could go on and on.

You’re right, dmr ( hi, by the way)…. Megyn Kelly replacing Days’ time slot is a rumor; and as such, it got blown-up.
We were hit with tons of snow, as well….snowed-in!! So, I get it. My husband is from the North End of Boston….looove Boston…I went to University there ( Back Bay area). And, my eldest sister went to Berklee College of Music.
And, yes….I definitely agree about Nancy Grahn and her superlative performance as an alcoholic. She’s so good, I almost believe she’s really afflicted. I think she must have done her homework. I can only hope she does not regress and gets back with Julian….she deserves better.
I, also, agree about the asinine cage story. What purpose did it serve? …..to steer in the direction of accusing Franco of Tom’s murder? Bah!!
I won’t even touch goody-two-shoes Sam and Jason, any longer. I’ve said enough….needless to say, you know how I feel. Jason reminds more and more of an angry bear…..seething…..the anger just under the surface, waiting to explode. What the heck have “they” done to Billy Miller??

I know, it is so bad!

Holiday week,,,many kids home from school so people can watch and all,,,there is rumor NBC may cancel Days for that talk or news show-forget her name-i believe it stars the whatsherface departing fox news?

Megan Kelly.

*Megyn Kelly, but Megyn Smelly or Smelly Kelly are acceptable (to me, anyway) if the rumors are true.

Megan Kelly there taking about her taking over one of the today show spot and a sunday spot after 60 min she is a big deal at fox they ofer her a lot of money to stay at fox but she has kids and wanted to do daytime so she be home with her kids I will not be watching there to many talk show all talking about same thing

Perhaps Y&R rebroadcast of a classic episode from the 80’s had something to do with the push up– I know I loved watching that episode– the sets, the hair, the costumes– seeing the old Newman ranch– seeing Jeanie Cooper again— the Brooks sisters– Gina singing—desperately trying to remember some characters long forgotten– like the guy Ashley was engaged to– didn’t remember him at all–LOL— Eve Howard standing right under Carl Williams nose as he discussed with Victor not seeing her– that was priceless– and seeing how young every one was like Paul– it might have been a repeat, but I am sure it gave Y&R a bump in their ratings,

Hello Mary SF, the guy that Ashley was with was Eric Garrison played by Brian Matthews which I liked them together…Brian/Eric has a beautiful singing voice too…I think it was found out that Eric had a relationship with Ashley’s mother Dina and that is why they Ashley and Eric separated.

I too loved watching the episode of Nicki’s original wedding to Victor. I wonder if it was taking place in the infamous Collinade Room. Gina singing “their song”. Not to mention the costumes. Paul was so young and handsome. He has definitely improved with age Not that I don’t love Jess Walton, because I do, I simply adore her ,but it was also nice to see Brenda Dickson in all her glory sharing subtle but oh so catty remarks with the wonderfully talented Jeanne Cooper. What memories l loved every second of the episode

I did remember who it was either

I absolutely loved watching the vintage episode and I do not watch the show on a regular basis. It was so nice to be able to watch and remember how the shows used to be written. Today, the actors lack experience/talent, the storylines and characters lack any real depth or substance. It’s very sad.

LOVED that Y&R repeat from 1984. This is how you do it.
This was back when children were seen and not heard.
For the love of all things Holy, please stop focusing on that petulant, ego maniac Faith. Doesn’t that child need to go to school? Today she sucked up more air time than the ravishing Gloria.

This uptick could be because more were home for the holidays. That said, I do think those behind the genre are working hard and well to correct the wrong turns made in the last 10-15 years, as we in the audience are recognizing we have to do something too if we want to protect our programs.

So, what’s your point?
Do you think GH should be cancelled?

hi gh’er 🙂
0ohh gorsh no, never cancel GH– cancel its’ writers!

Just to be clear, Su posted the misleading ratings that were first reported, in which Nielsen included the Friday 12/30 repeat for GH and Y&R. Networks don’t count the repeats, so when you throw that number out, the adjusted and correct ratings for Dec 26-30 were posted by Michael above. GH was not 4th when you take out the Friday repeat, and was up +130,000 over last week. Definitely not great to be down -557,000 over this time last year. But ratings go up, they go down. I like the stories GH has in place to kick off 2017.

hey Brian.

weird,
So, the Neilsen Household viewers do no count if they watched the Fri Classic episode –
(( it was an episode watched nonetheless.

If we watched it or not makes no difference in the rating numbers anyways but I’d think the Neilsen households would count.
Wonder how Nielsen would uncount them if they watched the episode.

Thanks Brian for clearing that up.

Hey Su, the whole Nielsen ratings system is very complicated, trust me. I’ve worked with television ratings for my job at a TV station near where I live for the past 18 years, and I still don’t fully understand them myself.

The best way I can explain it is because repeat episodes are usually so poorly rated, look at GH in this case, their audience for the 12/30 repeat episode was about 50% less than the viewership of a normal first run episode, the networks keep track of the numbers, but they don’t usually count them in the final weekly and yearly tallies.

So to answer your point, they count, but they don’t count, lol. The ratings numbers that Michael posted above are the ones ABC, CBS and NBC will report. And in this case, that’s good for GH, because it’s the difference between them being in 4th place or being in 3rd place for the week.

Okay Su, Brian cleared it up and it is weird. I think the Neilsen ratings should count. Like you said, it was an episode watched. ( I watched it and enjoyed it again).

Now, about those writers, ugh…
I think the GH fans on this web site alone can write much better story for GH.
There are too many story lines going on. I find myself forgetting about certain characters until they pop-up on my screen every three months.
You know what I mean.

Thanks, Brian !
So true it is confusing…

hi gh’er ..
ugh the GH writers! imo they are totally the wrong type of writers for GH..
((any chance they will get fired?))

Well, thanks for trying, Miss Suoo!

Sadly, Days is thisclose to being done. People magazine reported the other day that numerous people on the set have already been informed of the show’s upcoming cancellation, so NBC seems ready to publicly drop the hammer to end the show in Sept. 2017. Yes, the total viewership is up in recent weeks, but the key demos are clearly not moving up enough for NBC to earn enough ad revenue off of the show. Unfortunately, too little too late. It’s very sad news, but honestly not surprising at all, and the ratings for the other three soaps are nothing to write home about either.

It is rumored that the fox anchor moving to nbc will replace Days with a news styled talk show…

I am certain the show was done in 2015, but they didn’t want to cancel them during their 50th year– you can tell everything after the 50th anniversary week has been filler, they been killing time–any soap that slide down the ratings as much as Days has without anyone doing anything about it knows no is trying to save the show, because they already know the show is done– I have been around enough to seen the dying days of a soap before, and sadly I too think Days will get the official notice soon that the sand in the hourglass has finally run out.

Great news but troubling is that all their ratings are down compared to the same week last year

GH needs to be concerned about those numbers — being down over half a million viewers from this time last year shows that Jean and Shelly are not building an audience which is what the show needs to do if it wants to make a case for renewal.

As for Y&R, I think Sally Sussman is going to build on those numbers in the weeks to come with strong, character driven story.

GH does not get formally “renewed” because the show is owned outright by ABC, not an outside production company like the other soaps are. So ABC does not have to deal with negotiating to lease GH for contractual periods, and has the right to essentially cancel the show at any point. It’s sad to suggest this but quite honestly, I wonder how much longer ABC will stick with GH with this level of numbers if indeed NBC axes Days in the coming weeks. I always thought it would be a game of chicken.

hey Pat..
look what I found.. crazy !!
General Hospital has aired on ABC Television and has been filmed in Hollywood since its inception. The show was filmed in the Sunset Gower Studios from 1963 to the mid-1980s. It relocated in the 1980s to The Prospect Studios, where it remains.

General Hospital has had a number of different distributors throughout the show’s history, From its beginning until 1968, it was a co-production of ABC-Paramount and Selmur Productions.
ABC would later buy the series outright in 1968 and its owner passed from Selmur to American Broadcasting Companies, Inc.,
ABC’s old separate conglomerate. Ownership of the soap was then passed when the original ABC, Inc. merged with Capital Cities Communications in 1985 and it became Capital Cities/ABC, Inc.
The show would change hands again when The Walt Disney Company bought Capital Cities/ABC in 1996 and Disney began to program the network and the soap in September 1997 where it remains to this day.

Whether or not GH gets “formally renewed” it still needs to make a case for its continued existence and currently it isn’t doing a great job of that.

facts are

GH compared to this time , last year

negative 557,000 viewers less

Sonny and Carly are responsible

Jean and Shelley , started “working” @ GH… give or take around August 10, 2015

at this time , a year ago… they had already aired scripts… 5 months in.

a year later… they have spiraled this show

Frank Valentini , WITH Jean Passante and Shelley Altman have done this show IN

thrown in the towel

it’s alarming… that GH / ABC / Disney RENEWED this tired trio, with no gumption , no desire, no method… are they even sexual

ie: recall of THREAD headline @MF

Shelly Altman & Jean Passanante Share Thoughts On Being First GH Female Head Writers In Over a Decade!

LOL

at this epic fail

get it up Frank Valentini…. REAL’ly

Patrick…My theory is ABC and other’s, including the show ” This Is Us” that Justin Hartley (ex-Adam/Y&R) now is on, know perfectly well how to write soaps and the how the soap formula works. They just don’t want to invest in them for daytime. And if I was an aspiring tv/film writer I don’t know if I want daytime on my resume because it doesn’t seem to get the respect it deserves. I bet if they added up all the ways and times soap fans watch their shows I am sure the numbers would be higher. You know all the votes instead of just Neilsons setting the rules.

Oh, Patrick…I sooo agree with you. I must say, the way you ‘styled’ your words cracked me up. Too funny!!

I’ve read in another web site how magazine was reporting on the cancellation of DAYS to pave the way for Megan Kelley..but have since walked back the report when another site said it’s absolutely not true. This I firmly believe. I have been one myself to herald the same thought until the show got and better despite Ted Cords hee hee had to throw that in. I simply can’t see NBC so hyped over a Megan Kelley show that they outright DROP a show that posts consistently at 2mil plus during the daytime. Though they have yet to announce the extension…cancellation AIN’T in the cards!!

People magazine

Better and better and Ted Corday hope my corrections are posted too.

I hope so we have to watch

Ted Corday is dead. His son Ken Corday is running Days now.

OK OK you know who I meant hee hee

Now THIS is a positive outcome; I don’t believe I’ve ever enjoyed a full week of all four soaps this much since 2013 or 2014! And that is saying something! All four have something they offer up, and they are all exciting! Let’s hope 2017 continues to remain strong, though, I can say that I’m already enjoying all-four soaps again!

At least ABC owns their soap, its saving grace

I’m glad to see that GH’s numbers reflect how poorly it’s doing with viewers overall right now. Hopefully they will do something constructive about it like Y&R, B&B and Days have done over the past year. GH is a resilient brand defying odds after being shod on by various writers/EPs/execs on and off for the past twenty years, mostly on. An online viewer poll and some changes that appeal to the legacy viewing audience would be a shot in the arm to this soap. Really, FV and exec vision for the show is undermining it but if the other soaps can improve then we can demand that for GH too. The viewers’ are GH’s guardian, not any LT person like on the other soaps such as Sussman, Corday and Bell, and that’s why GH’s fans are so much louder than the others. We deserve our history, our Classic actors with front burner airtime, and our purpose for the show back. They should do it now before all of the fans completely give up at the 25 year mark of the show being neglected.

Good luck to all of the soaps ! I have signed on to help prisoners who have families that need help I apologize to everybody on this board /site that I have insulted! Not a trait that is attractive very ashamed god speed to all of you I will be absent for a while busy trying to help people who need help! God bless you all and if I have insulted you my deepest apolgy

Bottom 2 soaps just doesn’t have the viewership to justify keeping. I always thought Days should be #2

I honestly wonder how relevant the Nielsen ratings are anymore. There are so many people I know that watch soaps on media platforms other than network television these days. I know myself and the people I know that watch GH, a lot of us watch it on Hulu. It’s so much better. I have the commercial free package, so I can bang out a week’s worth of GH in one sitting in about 3 hours. The viewership numbers from Hulu are not counted into the Nielsen ratings, there’s no way they could be. So I don’t believe these ratings are a true accurate reading on how many people are really watching these shows.

At 2.600.000 plus plus plus another 8 million plus another 5 million viewer tune in too watch days it 23 million viewer in week that’s a lot

Y&R: Moving in the right direct. DROP the Devon story and recast the actor!

GH: Its a cult! Frank and JELLY are going nowhere and there is NOTHING other than Anna and Valentin that remotely interest me! By the way, why was Helena so afraid of Valentin? He is a teddy bear!

Days: It may get cancelled because of NBC’s new “Flavor of the Month” but hear this, Megan Kelly is unlikable, her talk show will fail! Harry Connick is VERY likable and he is struggling to stay on the air. Daytime talk shows are dead!

Spot! And for all the actors out there when you receive an award for you body of work move on we do not need your bullshit on how you think this country should have voted! Ok live in la la land while the rest of us clean your mess

You must be referring to the great Meryl Streep and she merely pointed out that the president elect imitated and mocked a man with physical disabilities.
She made a plea for empathy–there’s nothing wrong with that. Heck, the day empathy becomes a political topic is the day America has to take a good hard look at itself.
I am sorry but all bets are off when the president elect mocks the disabled.

Now the not so great Meryl Streep should never add politics when honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. I was as embarrassed for her as I was for Trump mocking the disabled and anyone mocking the President Elect. We all know that Hollywood is full of Democrats so get over your loss before you blow any chance of ever regaining the White House.

I did think Days was better–we had the Abby reveal. There are still some things to tighten up. Getting rid of Vivian was a step in the right direction. The Dario/Eduardo storyline needs to be dropped. Who cares?

Bring back Julie and Doug for a real story. More Victor and Maggie. There has been way too much Deimos. I’m sick of seeing him.

Claire is uber annoying.

B&B has been pretty good. Y&R has improved as well. I don’t watch GH.

Interesting how GH had the biggest loss in total viewers, as well as most of the key demos, from a year ago. Yeah, that Jelly is a real crowd pleaser (LMAO). Hopefully, TIIC will wise up soon and make veteran staff writer Elizabeth Korte, who knows the history of the characters far better than P&A ever could, the new head scribe. In the meantime, I’ll just stick with the much more watchable Y&R and DOOL.

Have to say i’m liking the Y&R so much more since Sally Sussman took over, but she needs to reign back the storyline of Hilary…OMG she has been on everyday since Sussman took over, it’s a bit overkill…she’s not that great an actress and she is bringing down Devon, who finally got his balls back and became a man….Devon needs to be with Mariah and give her a fairy princess ending…love that Gloria is back….can you say, “Meow”….Bold and Beaut was doing great with Eric and Quinn, then ruined it by having her and Ridge playing this dumbass and lame “sexual” game…so stupid and enough with Steffy, Liam and Wyatt triangle….break them all up and give them to other people…so tired of that retreaded storyline….DAYS needs to dump half their cast and stop taping so far in advance and maybe have the set designers visit IKEA or some other furniture store and stop using the one scene with the two doors that serves as a law office, the emergency room, regular hospital rooms, and any scene that requires characters interacting….viewers are not stupid and can tell it’s the same set just being used for different offices….this poor soap!!!! And GH, dump the trio of Jelly and Frank, break up Carly and Sonny, so boring, same with Sam and Jason, boring, only good thing is Alexis and Julian, cause she’s a good drunk and he’s so freakin hot!!!!!! Give Laura and Monica and Tracy better stories and lose the excess baggage…..i know i said a lot, thanks for reading and Happy New Year!!!!!! May the soaps all refuel and stay on air for the next 20…….oh and bring back One Life to Live…..miss Vicki and Dorain and the Buchanans…….

Lot’s of good ideas in your comment. I’m with you regarding B&B. Can’t believe they keep reworking their same “love” triangles time after time. Maybe it’s because they have less cast to work with than the other hour soaps. But they are more boring for me than Carly and Sonny.

Please talk to wardrobe we have ladies dressed in sleeveless dresses in winter with their boobs hanging out! God we are so out of touch

Stick with them out of touch for a few months hope when I tune back in they will be storming the air waves

Happy New Year to you, and give ’em hell, k/kay!!!! Hey, if the winter chill never bothered GH’s less-than-decorous Alexis, why should it any other female???? There seems to be this new breed of women who are impervious to the cold….they’ll go bare-legged and sleeveless even in a blizzard, whether it is personally flattering to their form or not. It’s not something to which I personally adhere since I love seasonal sweaters and the like, but somewhere the “ladies of the land” have gotten the notion that walking around half-naked in garishly-printed, ill-fitting garb is the height of style! Needless to say, I’m truly hoping that Friday’s “fashion parade” will portend a new era of tasteful, understated elegance with a nod toward an “appropriate to the occasion” attitude. At last, luxe will be in, loud will be out!

Speaking of Neighbours, the Australian soap opera also received its first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Daytime Drama Series now that its a revival can be streamed on Amazon Freevee. In addition, The Young and the Restless iconic, Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) received his first Daytime Emmy nomination in more than 20 years in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category.

In the Daytime Drama series categories, CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless each scored 12 nominations more than any other show. Leading the acting nominations was B&B, who landed 7 performers in the various categories, a first in its 37-year history.

In a statement, Adam Sharp, President & CEO, NATAS expressed, “We are happy to once again honor the creative talent both in front of and behind the camera of America’s favorite Daytime programs. We look forward to celebrating the icons who enliven the days of audiences across the country.”

Brent Stanton, Head of Daytime, NATAS added, “Producing the Daytime Emmys is a labor of love for all of us at NATAS. The huge popularity of these shows continues to be must-see viewing for their fans.” NATAS also revealed that Lifetime Achievement Honorees, Hosts, Presenters, and Silver and Gold Circle honorees will be revealed at a later date.

The Daytime Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in television programming honoring work in a variety of categories, including daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting, culinary, and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy jointly announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime.

The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be produced once again by NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI). Adam Sharp and Lisa Armstrong are executive producers from NATAS, while David McKenzie executive produces from ATI.

Congratulations to all the men and women in front of the camera and behind the scenes for their recognition as we take a look at who will be going for gold come June. Here are the nominees below starting with the Daytime Drama Categories.
