Vincent Irizarry Debuts On Days of our Lives! What Were Your First Impressions Of Deimos?

Courtesy/NBC

Courtesy/NBC

Monday’s episode of Days of our Lives brought with it Daytime Emmy winner Vincent Irizarry, who made his highly-anticipated on-screen debut as Deimos, the brother of Victor Kiriakis (John Aniston)!

In his first scenes, Victor armed with a gun confronts his brother who has gotten inside the Kiriakis mansion.  As the dialog plays out, viewers learn that Deimos has been in prison for years, and that he somehow managed to work a deal for his freedom.  Clearly, Victor is rattled to see his younger brother again, who he wished would have remained locked up in the slammer.

When Victor questions Deimos as to what he wants, and why he came to see him in Salem, Deimos reveals he needs a job.  There is also clearly some underlying blackmail, or not yet revealed secret between the brothers from their past that is also at play here.

When Phillip (John-Paul Lavoisier) happens upon the scene, he acts stunned to learn that Victor has a brother.   Deimos leaves the mansion with Victor never hoping to see him again.   Meanwhile, Caroline (Peggy Mcay) tells Justin (Wally Kurth) she has had visions of something terrible happening to Victor.  She also thinks it will be related to a man named “Damian”.

At the end of the episode, DAYS fan witnessed a huge double-cross as Phillip and Deimos met up at the park bench.   Clearly, they are working together!  It looks like they just might have a major plot to bring down Victor, once and for all.

So, what were your first impressions of the new bad guy in town, Deimos?  Glad to see Vincent Irizarry finally make his DAYS debut? What do you think Phillip and Deimos’ plan will be? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

I loved it!!! It was like me having ice cream on Sunday…it was a great episode and great debut

He seemed more like a Dimera or a GH Cassidine…i see him as the future anti-hero Victor type once JA leaves as Victor one day…i see him getting into fights with Brady and Philip…i see him paired with Nicole.

Great idea about him with Nicole. I have been worried to death about her, ha. I thought maybe she would get with Finn but that might be too close to Daniel. It was creepy when Brady dreamed about her the other day, huh? And she & Eric can never go back. This guy would be great. I think he’s a good addition.

What an incredible addition to the cast. He is a first rate actor – always enjoyable to watch. Looking forward to the development of this character.

Can these writers be trusted to actually “develop” a character?

Vincent welcome back to Daytime, I watched Days yesterday. Vincent is a wonderful actor, and looks terrific for 56 years old. still sexy as ever. The man never ages.

this is going to be another shnooze fest……first off, Victor has been on for 100 years and now all of a sudden he has a way younger brother that’s been in jail….Phillip is sooo boring and him and Belle have no chemistry whatsoever….the one good thing about the show was Ben, the serial killer and he’s gone….ever since, Days has fallen flat….maybe they can bring back Ben with a storyline from the series Making a Murderer and he can be falsely accused on DNA and get off, then go on another killing spree and wipe out the teens that cannot act, with the exception of Joey Johnson, and maybe take out all these faux Kiriakiases…..and don’t get me started on the whole Hope debacle storyline….poor Kristian Alfonso……John’s parentage…who cares? Eve being let go, HUGE mistake…..only good thing so far was Ava knocking the hell out of Saint Kayla with the candlestick, in the library..oh wait, that’s the game CLUE….hahaha…really wish TPTB would listen to viewers and update the sets and update the filming schedules and only film three weeks to six weeks out…..and stop it already with all the DEATHS AND DEPRESSING Stoylines…….thanks for reading…

And thanks for an annoying rant lol just go with it and enjoy we still have to get to September and a new nbc contract just to give people like you a keyboard work out

But Scott, how do you really feel? I sense you’re holding back. LOL.

DROOL continues to saddle good and great actors with No Win storylines. Regardless of whether you liked Melissa Archer or not, no one could animate that stupid elephant storyline. Kassie/Eve was brought on to give Jennifer a rival. That had zero reason to tune in. Hope is stuck with a dismal storyline. And as if the last twenty years of Who Is John Black wasn’t riveting enough, we’re going through it one more time.

I see the revolving Sean Brady casting continues. (Spin the wheel, Beemers turn!)

VI is a remarkable actor. I hope they don’t mess this up. I was so excited to see him paired with JP. (Sadly, they immediately pivoted to the Belle Sean Philip triangle. Again. Like John Black parentage… been there, done that.)

Please, Soap Gawd, don’t let them mess up VI with another elephant storyline.

Hi, Scott.
Why do you find the great age difference between siblings so far fetched? Look at Hugh Hefnerer. There is half a century of years separating his first and last child. Later.

What about the age difference between Andre and Chad…no one brought that up?

@jimh. That’s right, Jimmy! Duh….didn’t see what is right in front of my nose. Lol.

With exception to letting Kassie go, I agree with everything else. Hope they dont pair Vincent with Nicole; already tired of her telling and crying. Really, there are more emotions! Never liked Nicole. Everything else you say is accurate!

Why are you wasting your time watching this show?

I don’t feel I’m wasting my time, just disappointed right now with the way the stories are being told. I grew up with Grandma H and her donuts….Dr. Tom, the Horton’s hanging of the Xmas balls…..it’s like a tradition and they are part of my family. Just think the show needs to relax on the killings and departures and stop bringing in new characters when you haven’t fleshed out the ones that were introduced a year ago……where’s Paul’s “boyfriend”…is he not gay anymore? Why has he not called to check on Sonny…why did Bo die and be buried in practically one episode, but Daniel “died” and has been mourned over for weeks now….Bo was here for 30 years…..can Nicole not be on here own for a month???? Maybe her and Chole will become lesbian lovers/mothers and raise Parker….course, i’m sure with that statement i’ve probably offended someone somehwere…hahaha….and please, NBC, just develop a 30 minute show drama-wise, that’s doesnt include a panel sitting around discussing nothing…. Bold and Beautiful seems to do well why not another 30 minute show??.

Great start. Would love him paired with Nicole. Imagine what naughtiness they would create!

Nicole deserves a new love interest and he would be great for her!

Good get for DAYS!

He was great as Dr. David Hayward on ALL MY CHILDREN, the show that should have never gotten the axe and deserved better than an ill fated attempt as an On-line presentation.
At any rate, yes, will be glad to see him as a cast member of the classic DAYS OF OUR LIVES and sparring with Jon Aniston.

Vincent Irizzary is one of those actors who immediately steals the screen. You can’t take your eyes off of him because he’s so interesting and has such a strong presence. He’s a great addition to the cast, and the backstory between Victor and Deimos looks like it’s going to be great. I’m very excited to see how this plays out.

I just hope Deimos will stick around for a while and not be killed off or written out at the end of this story. Vincent definitely has the power to be a leading man on the show, especially if John Aniston is retiring soon. An advantage he has is that Deimos is a Kiriakis, meaning that he already has ties to one of the show’s core families. Unlike previous villains like Clyde Weston and Ian McAllister, Deimos will hopefully have more of an impact and stick around for years to come.

One thing that amused me though, is that John Aniston and Vincent Irizzary are 25 years apart in age, and are brothers. To me, it seemed like Deimos could be Victor’s son! Deimos certainly looks closer in age to Philip than he does Victor.

Speaking of Philip, I’m not sure that I like him being involved in whatever plan Deimos has for Victor. If this turns Philip into a villain, it won’t work. I hope they don’t trash the character of Philip for the sake of this story.

DITTO.. I agree with everything you said…. Days needs a younger villian… So many of the older verterans on the show are 60s-80s year olds.. Great actors, but Days has not done a good job in the past getting younger villians.. Now we know that Ava will be gone.. now that she has kidnapped Kayla… great writing and Days has been rockin it!!

Andre and Chad are brothers too and like forty years apart in age.

PLEASE ! PLEASE ! PLEASE !

stop ; with all the responses; her should be paired with Nicole !!!! really?

inasmuch as I like Arianna Zucker ! I now consider her to be ole days… and yes, I’ve posted that she’s had a rebirth of sorts… with Daniel and Eric gone…

but really ??? ready to latch her on to… the best male lead in daytime

I hope not

meh !!!!! perhaps… if they must…. let him have his fling ! hopefully… as was posted… Nicole will be pregnant with Daniel baby… so that lets us all off the hook

I am clearly waiting for Alla Korot… as Janet to ignite with Deimos Kiriakis

DAYS ! hire Kassie DePaiva

Vincent Irizarry needs a top draw high tiered actress

Nicole is so passe… and yes I want more for her

ahha!

Days gets ”Vincent Irizarry” and GH gets Genie Frances, sigh ..
WTG DOOL !! (Lucky for Days!!!

And B&B gets the “Giligan’s Island” actress, LOL!

but it is only a 3 hour gig….a three hour gig.

Days gain, GH’s pain…especially since we were losing Dr. Patrick Drake.

Ahh, Vincent! How I have missed you, you gorgeous man, you!! You bring the devil with you wherever you go. I am breathlessly anticipating anything this profoundly and infinitely perfect thespian brings to Salem.
Food for thought….and this is directed to 4ever: could Phillip really be Deimos’ son? They are obviously working together to overrun Titan Industries toward a takeover….so, why would Phillip go against his own father. I never realized he was a baddie. Awwww. I feel so badly for Victor. I love his Teddy Bear look!!
I love John Paul, too…as all of my OLTL cast, but, I must confess, I am not digesting him in this role.

Philip was created in a petri dish. Victor and Kate’s plan was for Kate to carry their child, but Vivian had other plans and became pregnant with Philip…You never know what could have transpired in the lab! I wonder how many cc’s were in the petri dish, CeeCee?! lol

Tee-hee! You are such a wicked dood, 4ever….I love it…so clever.
I didn’t know the circumstances surrounding Phillip’s conception and birth. Thanks. And, thank you for making me chuckle. Later.

“…You bring the devil with you wherever you go. ”

classic line… perfect for Vincent Irizarry

here’s DAYS new Villain… perhaps he can align with Andre…

I hope he’s on for the long haul…. and it’s JPL that takes the fall

too funny about @4ever’ Phillip… I had forgotten that petri dish

ie: I have hope that Deimos son is Xander… talk about sophistication and upping the ante on class acts…. major talents…. male leads big time

Xander is too old to be Deimos’ son. Plus, Xander is in prison. I do think it was a mistake getting rid of Xander.

What Cee Cee said.
Vincent is an amazing actor who cannot bore you even when he eats oatmeal.
I just don’t have the time to watch Days but would re consider giving up either GH or Y&R and replace the 2 aforementioned with Days if the 2 aforementioned continue to disappoint me.
Vincent is worth it–he’s positively golden.

Hey, Patrick,
….Glad you liked my line…lol…thanks!!
It is possible for Xander to be Deimos’ son. I man is able to reproduce at 18 years of age. So, it is plausible.
There’s a storyline right there. Perhaps Deimos impregnated a very young girl snd abandoned her….Xander’s mother. Would not put it past Deimos. Like father like son. Xander could definitely be brought back…..wow…what a juicy story that would make!

Vivian went to the same fertility place as Kate and Victor, pretending she was going to have a baby with Ivan, but had Victor and Kate’s embryo implanted in her. Good times.

Thanks, Mo.

After only seeing Vincent as Lujack & Nick Henry on GL, (both characters absolutely LOVED!) was a bit disconcerting to see him being “the bad guy”. But, he certainly has charisma galore, definitely the acting chops, so looking forward to what comes next.
Just what did Victor do to frame Deimos into getting life in prison. What did Deimos do to get him out after 30 years. And while Deimos was said to me 20 at the time he bedded Victor’s fiancee’, just how hold was Victor then? 40? 30? 35?
I mean, Caroline has said she was in high school with victor & shawn, until Victor went to Greece. So she married Shawn. Victor is now telling Maggie that after Helena died, Deimos in prison, he came to America. and yet….hmmm, when was it Victor had the affair with Isabella Toscano’s mother…in Italy??
And then…….if Deimos was 20, and it was 30 years ago, he is 50 now. So….hmmm, that seems a bit younger than Bo! When was the affair with Caroline? LOL

Absolutely wonderful. I am really liking Days! I am hooked! Vincent just captures your attention. I hope he gets plenty of screen time. Michael Knight needs more screen time on Y&R!

THIS MAN IS GREAT NO MATTER WHAT SHOW HE IS ON OR WHAT PART HE PLAYS…WILL HAVE TO TUNE IN NOW…..

I liked Vincent on AMC so I hope he does a good job on DAYS. One question I’ve always had it why does DAYS film 6 months in advance and has this always been the caae.

Even though I did not see all of his scenes, he is a talented actor, and could be an interesting addition to the show. Like what others say about pairing Nicole with him. Two strong actors could make for a dynamic presence. Like that Days is trying to shake it up to find good chemistry between actors, and better storylines.

I really liked Vincent Irizarry on Guiding Light when he was Lujack and the long-lost twin brother, Nick. Nick and Mindy (Kimberly Simms’ version) were HOT!!!!

Phillip is working for … ??? Deimos Kiriakis !

LOL

hey… as long as Deimos doesn’t take the fall if Salem finds this out!

JPL’ Phillip is not that endearing of a character any way

Caroline sure read Justin the riot act, didn’t she tho? at least she’s talking about them and not sweeping them under the rug

gawd! on Monday’s ep: Kassie DePaiva did more in those two scenes… then all of DAYS cast ever

1. when she asked Justin … where … if at all … was their relationship going
2. when she pulled out that picture coloring from Paige as a child

it just smarts… and is a painful reminder how huge a mistake Ken Corday is responsible

a reminder that February 2, 2016 is fast approaching

whatever will Rafe, Eduardo, Justin, and now Deimos do with their lives?

I think VI has another winning character in Deimos! We left him alone today brooding into his coffee, so I wonder if he’ll meet a like-troubled woman the next time we see him?

He seems like he might be a little slimy which is why I think it is going to be a lot of fun watching Vincent in this role. Hopefully we’ll see some bad to him as well as some good so he can be redeemed at times but not all the way because we all love a baddie on our soaps.

I was interested until I realized it’s all about that boring stupid serum.

Don’t like that Philip is working against his father.

A jet could fly through the holes in the backstory created for Deimos. However, ill go along with it because the end result is a good actor joining the cast. Let’s hope the writers don’t waste him as they have with other ABC refugees.

Hmmm. Did Deimos kidnap Bo? Did Stefano get murdered for the wrong reason? By the way, I’m not sure we’ve seen the last of Stefano — even if it’s his ghost or spirit haunting someone.

I think they must be writing the script 5 minutes before the show airs.

I think DOOL has done a good job of recovering from losing several key players, Billy Flynn and Vincent are great.

I can’t wait for Judi Evans (Adrienne) to walk in and make eye contact with Vincent Irizarry! That perfect soap opera chemistry from the good ole days! (Sad, I know, she’s no longer on contract) .

I have watched Vincent Irizarry for 32 [it will be 33 in November] years & I have followed his career, from GUIDING LIGHT to MARIE [where he played Sissy Spacek’s abusive lout of a husband] to HEARTBREAK RIDGE with Clint Eastwood & Mario Van Peebles to SANTA BARBARA and back to GUIDING LIGHT [where Vincent had played My Beloved Brandon “Lujack” Luvoneczek from Nov 1983 to December 2, 1985, the day that Lujack died on-screen due to pervasive internal bleeding; it was 5 years/7 months/3 days later, Vincent returned to GUIDING LIGHT to portray Lujack’s as-yet-unknown twin brother, ace-reporter-with-a-ponytail, Nick McHenry, who arrived in Springfield on July 5, 1991 and departed [very much alive, thank God] with his HIV-afflicted wife, Susan, in 1996. Vincent then guested on ALL MY CHILDREN in Summer 1997 before becoming a contract player in November 1997, portraying cardiologist Dr. David Hayward until AMC’s cancellation in 2011 [having been fired by the AMC execs for two years during his 9-year David Hayward run, Vincent joined YOUNG & RESTLESS for two years as David Chow, a mystery man whose back story was never explored during the two years Mr. Chow was in Genoa City] on ABC-TV. Vincent joined Prospect Park Productions when ALL MY CHILDREN, cancelled by ABC in 2009, moved to the Internet, lasting from 2011 to 2013 [correct me if I’m wrong] & he is now on DAYS OF OUR LIVES as Deimos Kiriakis, the younger brother of Victor Kiriakis. Vincent is as beautiful as ever & I can’t wait to see if Deimos & Adrienne Johnson Kiriakis [played by Judi Evans, who played GUIDING LIGHT’s Beth Raines, who was Lujack’s beloved girlfriend, for 18 of the 25 months Vincent captivated Springfield during his Emmy-nominated Lujack tenure] will have scenes together. Perhaps Vincent will win another Best Supporting Actor Emmy [he finally won an Emmy in 2009 while portraying AMC’s David Hayward–although he won the Emmy of My Heart long ago…

This week, DAYS head scribe, Ron Carlivati, confirmed that, and told Michael Fairman TV on the decision of the scripts the team submitted: “I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, and then there was Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s (Louise Sorel) crashing the reading of the will.”

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves Talk Return to DAYS for Doug’s Funeral, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Their Enduring Friendship

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on December 3rd. The story will feature emotional and heart-tugging scenes of Doug Williams funeral and honor his portrayer, the beloved Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th at the age of 98.

While the actors, producers, and crew took a lunch time break to pose for some pictures and speak with the press, they knew they would have to get back to taping the funeral, which was going to make it a tough day, but also cathartic for all who loved Bill Hayes.

Several returns have thus far been announced including; Melissa Reeves reprising her signature role of Jennifer Horton (a part she first played in 1985), and Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux. Reeves had last appeared on the show back in 2021, and she was replaced by Emmy-winner Cady McClain in her absence when Jennifer was in storylines. In real-life, Melissa had moved full-time to Tennessee along with her husband, Scott Reeves (ex-DAYS, GH, Y&R). Now, and as previously reported, Reeves will first appear back on DAYS for the Thanksgiving episodes with the Hortons.

Photo: JPI

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Matt and Melissa during the 15,000th episode celebration to get their take on: being back for these special episodes, how it has been working with and watching Susan Seaforth Hayes portray Julie’s grief over losing Doug, and how they have supported each other through the years. Check out what they shared below.

Melissa, you are back on the set of Days of our Lives for this very emotional and special moment in the series history. How does it feel?

MELISSA: Oh, my goodness. I am honored. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but to be here for Bill. He was like my real-life dance partner. He taught me how to ballroom dance. And to be here for Susan, of course, who’s just been our sweet hero this whole week. We’re just following her lead. She’s just been this incredibly strong example for us in the midst of this trial and season of her life. She is like just lifting us all up with her. It’s been incredible.

I was at Bill Hayes memorial service which was truly incredible and I know at the time you were in Tennessee. It was moving and celebratory of his life, all at the same time.

MELISSA: That’s all I have heard. I have to watch it on You Tube. They said it was just a real celebration of his life and I love that.

Photo: JPI

This must be difficult for Susan Seaforth Hayes depicting the death of Doug, when she is still grieving the loss of her beloved husband. (Susan pictured above with the returning Stephen Schnetzer who plays her on-screen brother, Steve Olson).

MELISSA: I’m sure Susan has those moments at home by herself, but she’s so good at being a leader and leading all of us. We’re following her, you know, and she’s like, “This is how I want to feel today.” And we’re just going along with her, you know? It’s so sweet.

Photo: JPI

How is it to see Matt Ashford again live and in-person?

MELISSA: You know, Matt and I can go years without talking, or seeing each other, and then the minute we see each other we’re chatting away.

MATT: Melissa was out on set doing a scene yesterday on the phone talking to a stage manager; as she was telling some really tough news on the phone. I’m like crying in the background, literally, I’m off-stage crying.

MELISSA: And then we get like back into normal life, and we’re like, okay, “What’s happening? What’s happening with this … or what’s happening with that?”

I had read, Melissa, that you were in touch with Matt about if there night be a possibility for you to reprise your role as Jennifer for these special episodes?

MELISSA: Yes. Well, Matt was like, “Hey! Would you want to come back? “And I was like, “Matt, you know, I would always come back. ”

MATT:  Every time I come here to Days of our Lives, they ask, “Where’s Missy? How’s Missy?” Everybody backstage says, “I miss her.” All of the crew is asking about her and saying, “It would be nice to see Missy. Nothing wrong with you Matt, but …”  They said, “Where is she?” I said, “She wants to come!”

Photo: JPI

There are some beautiful photos of Missy and Bill and Susan thorough the years that I found. It just reminded me of just the deep and entrenched history we all have had with the show, personally and professionally.

MATT: Missy is roughly the age where Francis Reid (ex-Alice Horton) was when she started the show, which is just crazy.

Photo: JPI

I’ve always said Missy was going to be the next generation Alice. Do you feel that Jennifer is the heir apparent matriarch of the Horton family?

MELISSA: Yes. I mean, this has been greatest blessing of my life, and that would be great. I told Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of our Lives) when I was 17 that this show would be my life. Ken always told me, “This is your home,” and I’ve always felt like that.

How have gotten through the scenes watching Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie go through the loss of Doug?

MATT: Susan is bringing her best performance life for her and Bill. I mean, she’s a showbiz baby. She always has been one hundred percent, and she’s doing it for him, and this is who they’ve always been. So, you’re seeing this amazing performance colored by her life. She has her private life as Susan, but she has enough plugged into Julie that she’s done amazing work. The director, producers and writers are giving her room to live in these moments and it’s quite wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Have you already broken down in tears during the taping?

MELISSA: Yesterday, but today’s taping of the actual funeral I think they want us to try and be just more celebratory.

MATT: I mean, it is a beautiful long life for Bill Hayes and his character of Doug Williams, and so it will be about that. Then, you get a bunch of us together in the church pews, and there’s going to be hijinks.

MELISSA: We all have been through the waves of grief. You have that awful cry and then all of a sudden you feel okay.  There are those family situations we are portraying where you’re like, “What do we do? What do we do now? You know, no one knows what to do. But, it’s so sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the scenes all turn out.

So, are you glad that Matt and Melissa are back for the 15K episode and Doug’s funeral? From what we can tell, it’s going to be quite an emotional journey for Days of our Lives fans, and especially the performance of Susan Seaforth Hayes,

Days Of Our Lives

Ron Carlivati Talks on Decision to Make Days of our Lives 15000th Episode About Doug’s Funeral, and Previews Chances for WGA Award

This week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode. In of it itself, that is an incredible accomplishment for the long-running soap opera currently streaming on Peacock.

However, this on set gathering was a bit different. Though the show is celebrating their achievement, they are also in the middle of taping scenes surrounding the death and the funeral of Doug Williams, played by the late Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th of this year at the age of 98.

As previously revealed many longtime favorites are back to honor Bill and the character of Doug including: Gloria Loring (Liz), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Matthew Ashford (Jack), Maree Cheatham (Marie), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Stephen Schnetzer (Steve) to name but a few.

Photo: JPI

Michael Fairman TV was in attendance and spoke with Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati to gain some insight into how the 15,000 episode was crafted and the decision to honor the character of Doug Williams and Bill Hayes as its epicenter. In addition, Ron weighed-in on this Sunday’s April 14th WGA (Writers Guild of America) Awards, where he and his writing team are facing off with General Hospital for the daytime drama prize. Here’s what Ron shared below.

Was this your idea to make the 15,000th episode centered around Doug’s funeral and passing?

RON: It was. When you’re looking at it, and laying out the calendar for the whole year and you see 15,000 is coming up, we’re like, “What are we going to do?” And then, we got the news that Bill had passed away and something kind of clicked. I was like, “We should honor Doug on that show.” So then, we started to kind of build around that … when does he pass away? How does he pass away? Who could come back? You know, it’s a lot.  I’m very pleased with the returns that we got as there’s so much that you could do. We wanted everybody we could get. So, we put together a wish list and Janet Drucker (co-executive producer, Days of our Lives) made it happen.

Photo: JPI

You have Melissa Reeves back as Jennifer, when the role was last played by Cady McClain. What has it meant to have Missy back for these shows?

RON: It was so nice to see Missy Reeves. I think Cady has done such a good job, but on the 15,000th episode to see Missy as Jennifer, it’s a big deal. So having her was great, and overall, the milestone was a big undertaking, because you want to live up to it. You want the 15,000th episode to be good. Now, it has a lot of real emotion that you’re playing. because for the cast and the crew they’re honoring Bill Hayes just as much as we’re honoring Doug Williams.

Photo: JPI

Was it hard for you and the team to write this episode?

RON: Yes. I’ll tell you why it was hard to write.  When I wrote, for example, Asa’s (Phillip Carey) death on One Life to Live or Victor’s (John Aniston) on DAYS, Asa is a different type of character. Like, you could have characters going, “Oh! I’m glad he is dead.” You could have different points of view, but with Doug, you’re not having that. Every person loves this man. No one had a bad relationship with him. So, you’re challenge as a writer is how do you make it that not everybody’s saying the same thing and doing the same thing. And so, we tried to find ways to make the episode about all the familial relationships and yet, how do you make it about Doug and yet broaden the scope.

Photo: JPI

I had spoken to Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), a week after Bill’s memorial, for an interview. She said that she felt very fortunate that you did include her on discussions of how you would tackle Doug’s passing. How did that conversation go?

RON: First, I attended Bill’s funeral, which was incredible. I said to so many people it was an emotional service, but it was hard to be sad at this. The guy had an incredible life and it was an incredible celebration. And so, you’re sitting there watching this knowing that you now have to write something similar. And how do you write something that lives up to what you just witnessed? I wanted to talk to Susan to get her thoughts about, you know, how much do you want this to be about keeping Bill separate from Doug. How comfortable are you sharing your grief. She was incredible to talk to. It was a great chat.

You’re in the middle of taping these major scenes for the 15,000 episode to air in December. How do you think it’s going? Have you seen any of the scenes?

RON:  I haven’t seeing anything. I mean, we were still making changes to the script up till this morning!

Photo: JPI

The Writers Guild Awards are this Sunday, April 14th and once again this year there are two daytime drama nominees, General Hospital and Days of our Lives. How are you feeling about your chances this year?

RON: It is often just GH and us in the category. I’ve won three years in a row, so I’m kind of feeling like it’s their turn.

What episodes did you submit for contention? If I recall, they had to do with Victor’s memorial.

RON: The episodes we submitted were centered around Victor’s funeral. I think one has story with Vivian (Louise Sorel). We had some fun stuff, we had some emotional stuff at Victor’s death, and I am pretty sure that our submission was three episodes right around that time.

Did you make the decision to go with those episodes because there was a mix of humor and drama?

RON: I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, then there’s Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s crashing the reading of the will. So, we had a lot of fun and it’s hard sometimes to pick three that tell a story, as opposed to submitting for the Daytime Emmys, where the writing team only submits two shows. So, we shall see how it goes on Sunday.
