Because I have not seen the reels I will not make picks just glad Y&R did not get many! The big shock is that Camryn Grimes did not make it over Hunter King? I will say sentimental vote for Best Actress would be Allison Sweeney!

I know everybody thinks Geary is a shoo-in but could they maybe tie it with Billy Miller so it can be in your face to JFP for letting him get away! Just a thought!

For sure JFP but for GH for wasting his talents.

I know, Substitute. Billy Miller is my guy. But, Geary undeniably outdid himself. I have hated the Fluke storyline forever, ( Geary is not one of my favorites either) but I have to bow to Anthony and give him his due for creating a very compelling character(s), within an albeit stupid, run-on and ridiculous storyline.
Yes, it would be great if Billy won the award, but I must cede the honor to Geary. He does deserve it.

Billy was good on Y&R but Tony knocked it out of the park whether you liked the Fluke story or not.

What happened to Sharon Case???????? Sharon works so so hard. I can’t think of any actress with such a roller coaster ride of ups & downs her character Sharon Newman goes through. Please give Sharon Case her award 🙂

Sharon Case from Young and the Restless is my favorite and I can’t understand she was not nominated. Her acting for 5 years the most has been on point. We love you Sharon hope she knows how much

WHAT Gina aka Phyllis got nominated . No way what about Sharon Case and Camryn Grimes? They had the lead stories last year what did Phyllis do lay there?

Their is a war going on over there against Case has been for a while.

Case had a good year and some good scenes but she is not in their little group. As for Grimes I am totally blown away she is hands down better then any of the ones that made the list????

Yay! Gina received a well deserved nomination for Phyllis which Stafford did not receive on for her twitchy, adolescent portrayal of Neigh-na. (Nina). I finally like Phyllis and I owe it all to Gina’s brilliantly subtle approach to Phyllis.
I agree with you all about Camryn Grimes–she is so good and deserved an Emmy nomination over the petulant, yet hysterical, Hunter King.
I also think Sharon Case deserves some recognition but I thought I had heard that she did not submit a reel.

My disappointed in Gina Tognoni hurts. I do not get her….nor can I get into her head. This is not Phyllis…no way.
Sharon Case has proven to be a top-rated actress for me. She has been outstanding….she handled her ’bout’ with mental illness like a pro…..so real and very credible. The way she switched back and forth ; in and out of the fog in her brain took acting skill…no easy feat. She should have been nominated. Laura Wright? Hmmmmm.

ok-
the way it is..
the actors have to submit themselves..
Not all actors do that..
If Sharon did not submit herself she can not be nominated..
It seems she did not ..

Guys, SC didn’t submit herself for pre-nom!

Sharon Newman/Sharon Case gets the shaft either way! Lover her.

What about Peter Bergman(Jack Abbott)? Does anyone remember when he was out at the cabin going through withdrawal ? That guy can act and yet I never see his name in the nominations? Sharon Case knows she’s a great actress. She doesn’t need to be handed a toy or a pat on the bottom like Hunter King.

Sharon Case & Camryn Grimes did not get nominated over Hunter King because their not KISS BUTT’S or BABY-ASS WHINERS like Hunter King

As much as I would love Allison Sweeney , Maura West (Ava, GH) deserves the win! Maura for Lead Actress.

Sami or Ava

I’m on the fence, here

I hope they show the submissions … as they have in past years… so the fans can get a better overall

Sami: I am remiss in stating that AS’ Sami should get it for sentiment…. I’ve been corrected… she acted her butt off and nailed her scenes ALL Year (tip to Ray).

Ava: GH wouldn’t be anywhere near a Serial… had it not been for Maura West. Like Eileen Davidson…. this is a compliment…. but MW presence in and around her just supplants and she readily marquees solid acting and like ED elevates what we celebrate

now this is for real sentiment: Peggy McKay… it seems easy to forget and let go of older vets… pelt me ! but, I cherish and admire this lady … a matriarch who continually enervates her tv family. supporting? sure. a deserved lead nominee… by far.

Laura Wright : ????

of all the 3 Carlys… and they are all emmy winners… but, I just can’t help but still recall that Sarah Joy Browne, was thee Carly… who had a body of work that sold every emotion from A to Z more naturally. When she won for lead actress, this was, year, 2011. since the advent of lauded duo RC/FV… LW’ Carly has been in overdrive… doing the same thing… over and over… if it’s about Michael and Morgan… Franco…. now Sonny…. and now… exhausting with her declared BFF mode with “Jake”. stifle

yesterdays ep: she’s mowing down Olivia… about Franco and Nina… and smothered Jake at the diner… “sit in the corner ” Carly… no one will miss you

easily this is between Ali and Maura…

i’m easily swayed for AS’ Sami… as Days remains my #1

I forgot about Gina Tognoni :

no wonder here… forgot that she’d been on the show for a year : NOT

she debuted, August 11, 2014… and I don’t know how long she was coma laid up and lie their … as the audience bereft itself till she arose

LOL

give us a break… her body of work like every body else : is just that

I have no problem seeing her nominated for all her tenure… starting next year

she’s a two time emmy winner… she doesn’t deserve to be in this category

Gina Tognoni, really?

not that I don’t like her but c’mon. Sharon Case has made Lemonade out of the crap they have given her.

Lots of backstage backstabbing over there! Really bad try workplace turmoil at the highest level!

Me also Sharon Case is my favorite. Sharon Newman makes this show what it is. She is the most loved and loved to hate her acting is so awesome 🙂

Gina is a better actress, sorry to say this but its true.

Gina is very good but Sharon had way more on her resume this past year.

I agree. Phyllis laid there all year and Sharon worked her butt off. Give the award to Ms Case and call it a day she deserves it so much

Get over it, Gina is a better actress, than Sharon Case. Sharon over acts and is a boring character.

i could not agree with you more!! meanwhile, where the heck is Camryn Grimes??? she and Sharon Case were brilliant in their scenes

Yep, same old people as the last few years.

You do know the actors have to put themselves in, eyes..
Perhaps Sharon did not submit herself..
I believe she did not ..

Camryn Grimes I believe will be recognized NEXT year… because she hasn’t been on a full year yet!

Congrats to GH, really happy that they lead the nomination especially after years of y& r doing so, I think all acting categories are important but I still feel finola Hughes is a lead actress no matter what, oh and I’m confuse by the guest star category with Linda tovano in it? What are the criteria? Glad for her though she totally rocks. Hope gh sweats this year.

Linda Elena Tovar (Rosalie on GH) is not a Special Guest Performer. She’s in the wrong category.

Totally agree, and she has had NO Emmy worthy material this year. She’s barely even a character on the show, I forget she exists until she’s on screen again. The same goes for Theresa Castillo, completely useless character.

Awards shows are always for work done the previous year. In this case, it’s 2014; not 2015. Donna Mills as Special Guest Performer, I agree with. But, Rosalie? That’s just bizarre. Frankly, Thaao Penghlis, Constance Towers and Kathleen Gati all should have been considered for this category if Rosalie could be.

And while Sabrina isn’t a favorite of mine, I think Theresa Castillo did some great work in 2014; especially when her character had a premature baby that eventually died.

Agreed, Kansa….Teresa Castillo is always underrated, particularly by the fans. I love her snd I find her acting better than many….such as Sam. The woman cannot act. Period.

The nomination that makes me laugh out loud is Days Of Our Lives for BEST COSTUME DESIGN? Anyone that can see knows this is a total joke.

Don’t hold back! .

And the set design is equally horrible. The palette is a washed out mauve and the decorations look like stuff you’d pick up at granny’s estate sale. Drab stuffy dull. That has to be the saddest hotel ever. And the DiMera offices look like a dentist waiting room circa 1984.

Cause they do not have the budget like the other shows. But do not worry they will. For years the academy has done Days shitty. Up to last couple of years. Y’all are small minded jerks.

LOL some of nicoles outfits are cute.

Lol, Mark….Nicole’s wardrobe is downright sexy….and, she has the body; all the right equipment to showcase whatever she wears. She is gorgeous!

GH does have AWESOME costume design IMO. All the stuff worn by the ladies is on point to their characters. And, Duke is one of the few male soap characters whose wardrobe can get more attention than the woman he’s with. His suits are just gorgeous!

GH has nothing on Days, as far as wardrobe is concerned. Some of what the GH ladies wear is drab in comparison. Nicole, Eve, and Serena put GH clothing the character wear to shame….What about Kate? Wow, she can really rock those bad-ass outfits. Now, there’s a woman of 60 who wears her sometime outlandish clothes with style and class……her clothes are all the rage….she does not ‘ let it all hang out’ either. And Marlena is the epitome of haute couture for a professional….unlike some characters on other soaps.
I would much rather look at beautiful clothes or bite into a substantially fulfilling story than background scenery. When I find myself engrossed in a storyline….the scenery fades anyway…..

I did forget Theresa (Jen Lilley)… Those skirts (minis) and short, to-the-waist leather jackets she wears, are to die for!!!!

You know what makes a good soap is good writing , directing , good actors and a great producer to guide. Production design & especially fashion is not a huge part of success of a real show. I do not watch to see what person is wearing .

Nice to see all the GH nominations!! It’s their year; by far the best soap this year!!

I think that James Scott as EJ DiMera seems to be missing from the lead actor nominations. He had a fabulous year this year. I was also surprised to see Peggy McKay on the Lead Actress category. I love Peggy McKay but I think she should have been in the supporting actress category.

I do not think he submitted himself!

I agree, Arlene. With all due respect to Ms McKay, I do not think she should have been nominated for either. But, I do understand this fine lady’s hard work …I suppose she is deserving for that. I think the nomination is given to her out of respect and deference.

I think these daytime emmy nominations are weak. I feel like their are people that had strong material that should have been nominated. It’s a joke that Michelle Stafford,Camryn Grimes, and Blake Berris were not nominated. There should be a stipulation that you have to be in a certain amount of episodes to be nominated.

Blake Berris totally should have made the cut!

I agree, Jeremy.

“…I think these daytime emmy nominations are weak. ”

I read the list of nominees… and didn’t feel a surge of excitement, either

and, for me… it might be , or IS

that DAYS of our Lives is not up to par … what it was in 2012 and 2013…

I’m still an unwavering DOOL fan, nevertheless

the two categories that stood out for me

best lead actress : Alison Sweeney, ex-Sami, DOOL for the sentimental WIN
and without doubt… could easily win her 3rd emmy, knowing she carries a big part of GH…. Maura West, as Ava

best supporting actress : I’m SO glad Amelia Heinle is once again in the running… as Victoria, Y&R
and I’m ecstatic for Lisa LoCicero, as Olivia, on GH… I feel she’s unheralded for her work… and I’m glad to see her nominated

my little Ciera Brady, didn’t get nominated… that would have made my days

disgruntle : Chad Duel and Hunter King : blech! I don’t get them

I think its great that GH got so many nominations, I just wish I would be able to watch the show, but alas, Cablevision doesn’t carry POP…guess i’ll have to wait and live through you and your pictures Michael.

Its hard to take the emmys seriously when some are a joke…how about an emmy for least seen actors….nominies would all go to GH…lol

I know, Monica Quartermaine would top that category!

Hello Monica!

Or at least a re-occurring actor category since that seems to be a trend. “Yes” for Monica. And also Felicia and Mac They finally give Felicia a chance to be someone more than a pretty face when she ran for Mayor, and then they cheated her out of a minor, but decent role. And since it’s GH, and sometimes incredulous is part of the show’s M.O., how about more from Alan’s ghost as a moral compass (which can be seen as a contradiction from some of his actions when alive), or Emily, especially for both the Q’s and Nicholas, or more Georgie for Maxie.

And I also would have wanted Camryn Grimes and Sharon Case nominated, to go along with Ray Wise who was in the guest performer category. They were all part of a big spooky story on Y&R. Speaking of which, where was Melody/Nikki the lists. Maybe she doesn’t she doesn’t get as hysterical as some.

And jimh, how about an award for characters of whom we’d like to see far less,, literally speaking? That one would go to Alexis and her over-exposed, oft-seen cleavage! And speaking of, was her latest “storyline”—if one could even call it that….—“Much Ado About Tatas” not the most inane and ridiculous in GH, if not all of soap opera, history? To think that any time was even wasted on this ludicrous drivel truly beggars belief. When I consider all of the grande dames of daytime past, I cannot imagine any of them participating in such a revolting exercise of complete iniquity. And yet, NLG is always at the ready to jump right in with both….feet, or….well, you know!

I could never imagine my mother asking any of her sons-in-law….” ….so, how much did you see?”
I think TPTB have read our comments and saw the error of their ways (LOL), and are trying to ‘repair’ the situation. I actually used that same expression myself earlier. We should nickname Alexis, At The Ready.
Mayhap, the bosses will move these trysts to the bedroom from now on, considering that house and the women in it are as traversed as Grand Central….pun intended.

I liked NLG on Santa Barbara but on GH she’s been overly ‘exposed’ here far too much—ill take the more fun and classy Diane anyday—even if its only once every few months!

@CeeCee….On the contrary, if Sam makes her predicted move to Chez Drake, can you imagine the depravity that will be let loose at her former abode? I’m sure the pool table, staircase, balcony, hanging light fixtures, etc. will all be fair game for “Alexis At The Ready’s” never-ending quest of thrilling sexcapades. They will probably make “Aunt Ruby’s” fabled cathouse look tame by comparison…LOL!

Oh, yeah, Shay….free-for-all bordello….is that okay to say?

Speaking of Sam? I wish that for once, her detection abilities wre put to work. The writers should allow her nose to sniff out Bonnie and Clyde. C’mon, now…what does she do, really….have sex and talk about moving in with doctor-of-all trades Drake. It’s not that she even takes care of her son. Where is he?.
This would be a great storyline….for Sam to be the heroine! Find your husband, Sam, then hand him over to Liz.

@jimh….”Overexposed” is an understatement! And yes, while I also thoroughly enjoyed SB’s “Julia Wainwright,” Alexis is an entirely different animal….no pun intended! Her over-sexed hot mama (well, GRANDMA!) act is so completely OTT that it’s not even funny anymore, particularly when far too much time and attention are wasted on her neurotic (and erotic…) nonsense….there are so many other highly deserving women of a “certain age” on GH who should be accorded more of her limelight: Tracy, Monica, Dr. O., Anna, Helena AND the magnificent Donna Mills…bring her back! (And congratulations on a well-deserved Emmy nomination….hope she wins!)

I hope Alison Sweeney wins the emmy. She is a wonderful actress.

Congrats to all the nominees. Who deserves an Emmy, in my estimation? Anthony Geary, Maura West, Kristoff St.John, Elizabeth Hendrickson, Kristen Alderson and Max Ehrich….( I know he hasn’t bee seen much lately, but his portrayal of the typically recalcitrant rich kid was amazing ….love him.

I agree with you Donny, Alison should win the Daytime Emmy. She Deserves to win, Alison is a terrific actress

Yeah, Alison is a great actress….alas, she cannot hold a candle to Maura West !!

Well said Claudio. Cee Cee thinks Maura west is up ranks Ericka Slezak , susan Flannery etc . She is good not great

Some of the nominees have me puzzled. Molly and TJ did they even have much screen time.

Well you don’t need screen time to submit a reel, the actress who played Molly did wonderful scenes when Molly defended her father in jail and then later when she thought he died– I suspect those were the scenes she submitted. The actor who plays TJ did some good work confronting his mother and Sean about their affair and how it lead to his father’s death. It’s quality not quantity that counts when submitting reels for consideration.

Early in the year they had a great story..
both were in turmoil over their parents..
Molly’s dad was killed and through that her acting was superb..and her ordeal with Julian seeing her mom… when their house was blown up she also gave a great performance..
tj was with her through all and gave great performances too..

Finally. Thank you academy for your GH nominations. You got it right this year.

I don’t think Anthony Geary is a shoo-in either, I am rooting for Jason Thompson. He has worked so hard last year with the baby story line.

Tony will get it but I agree Jason was fantastic. He is a keeper. Watching the clip of him as Steve Hardy is soooo right.

AG was so strong and solid prior to his LONG vacation and respite… I certainly don’t think his work since coming back is noteworthy

I’m hoping this is FINALLY Jason Thompson year

Billy Miller… I think you were phenomenal at Y&R…

JT deserves to win with all the upheaval his character went through and for JT as well… as an actor… to have weathered Robin, Sabrina, Robin, Sam, Robin… LOL

“I have enough bullets, for everybody”

LOL

GH writing : this so long so good bye LONG diatribe of “Fluke”

has ended on so many levels

as he once again skipped town… out on his yellow brick road… out the window of Oak Haven

Anthony Geary : if you should win the emmy for the 8th time… as best lead actor… ???
there’s nothing to celebrate this year

I’m sorry that the drawn out portrait of your character… in our face… and not out of our memory… is too much to bear

be it : the mindless squashing of a legacy character of Luke… or the squandering of your Talent as an actor

??? I don’t know

“where am I”

Well, Patrick, JT certainly deserves some kind of award for having “weathered” being tethered to that insipid ball-and-chain, “Sappy!”

As big of a fan of DOOL as I am, I am confused by some of the picks. First of all, Allison Sweeney is not a sentimental pick. She acted her tail off all year. The sentimental vote has to be Peggy McCay. I think an actor actress should be required to drive a storyline and have a minimum of so many shows before being nominated in the Lead category. I am not sure I could name a significant scene Peggy has had in the past year unless it was at Will and Sonny’s wedding or her goodbye scenes with Sami.

There are too many good actors not nominated. Where is Eric M (Brady), Lauren Koslow (Kate), Suzanne Rogers (Maggie), John Aniston (Victor), Kate Mansi (Abigail) and Ari Zucker (Nicole). These actors should be rewarded for making lemonade out of lemons. Lauren drives every story she is involved and needs to be Lead Actress.

I am bored by the same Lead Actors every year. Where is James Scott? The shows need to start grooming a new generation of actors as leading actors. This category has been stale for years.

The Costume Design for DOOL is a joke. The actresses need a fashion overhaul. Eve and Serena walk around Salem in clothing that looks like they are fresh off a New Year’s Eve date. Eve wearing a skin tight leopard dress during the day looks stupid. Serena dresses like it is Saturday night at the club. This is yet another reason some of the villians come across as cardboard characters.

I am rooting for Sweeney I guess poor choice of words most of your columnists are screaming West for best actress!

I’m days fan , In soap operas hey day they
focus on exotic locations, ,great storytelling and acting. Yes they dress up for weddings and parties but it not suppose to overshadowed the drama. Yes there is category for costumes but it is announced at the big awards show , because it is not as important as writing , directing, score, acting. By way I’m not insulting your intelligence , but I do criticized a show because I do not like there sets or clothes. Soaps are drama & Days is show know for its characters and story not glamour & fashion like B&B. Show half to have decent sets to tell a story , but years ago most drama took place over coffee. So you have met your match with me.

Budget ! Budget! They least amount of money and who cares about what they wear.

I care what they wear and what the set design looks like. If DOOL is going to tape six months in advance, I wish they would tell their actors to lose the spray tans. The “costumes” the actresses wear to sit in the Salem Town Square is crazy. I’d rather see the actors wear jeans, trendy jackets, etc., than see a leopard dress when Eve doesn’t even have a job. I would love to see some of the old sets again. Where is the set where Abe and Lexie lived? Wouldn’t it be cool for JJ to live in that cool loft space Patch lived in years ago. The only sets we see are the Town Square, Horton living room, Sonny and Will’s apartment, Ben’s apartments (looks like a cardboard) and a park where people get stabbed every week. Why is Hope and Aidan going to a hotel to make love? Give the core characters a home.

Lol, code. Who cares what they wear? You must be a guy…for shame. You absolutely cannot tell that to a woman…what a sinful faux-pas. …all the ghosts of couturiers past will come and haunt you!!! Lol.

Absolument, CeeCee!!!! I cannot view any show without taking a good long gander at the fashions, which leads me to the notion that if Ray thinks DOOL’s examples are an abomination on the style front, then he should take a lookie-loo at a certain bar association member on GH….talk about dressing like it’s Saturday night at the club…..quelle fin tragique!

FASHion does not make a great soap. Is this invasion of the body snatchers. I would not want y’all writing or directing soaps. Bless it. Irna Phillips would be shock to here what y’all thinks makes a good soap.

@code….If you were at all familiar with my (or CeeCee’s) posts, you would know that we frequently carp about the quality and consistency of writing on GH…of course, that is paramount to any successful show! However, in terms of the total viewing experience of any program, both set and costuming considerations make a huge difference to the finished product….they are what set the mood, sense of time and place and characters’ unique personalities. Were that not the case, then we could just have actors reading their scripts whilst donning gunny sacks in front of a green screen.

There is a category reserved just for wardrobe, code…or have you not noticed? If what the cast wore was inconsequential, then none of us would be talking about it. Even the male fans here and on other soap sites, make comments of likes and dislikes on what the characters happen to be wearing.
Please do not dismiss my comments and others on ‘wardrobe’ as child’s play. I know what I’m talking about, do you? Clothes bring millions….billions of dollars to couturiers, universally.
I am quite sure that the majority of women who watch any show on TV wonder whose design some actress is wearing….it is the nature of the beast.
So, please, I beg you not to insult my intelligence.

Blake Barris’ non-nomination just shows what a sham these awards really are. The fact that Michael Muhney didn’t even get a pre-nom underscores it. The Daytime Emmys are a joke.

They have been a joke for a long time. That’s why they have a hard time finding sponsors.

Sad to say MM is blackballed. [Thanks Hunter!]

Who is MM?

Michael Muhney was Adam Newman on Y&R. Hunter King who plays Summer falsely accused him of groping her because Eric Braeden who plays Victor didnt like Michael. [Thats my Opinion.]

Who knows what really happened behind the scenes, Timmm? It is really sad for MM to have been railroaded, if what you say is true. Too bad…Muhney is such a natural…..what a waste.
Is Victor ever going to leave?

I think an actor has to have the support of their show’s producers to even be *considered* for a nomination. Don’t blame the daytime Emmy organization. They don’t control who the soaps decide to submit for certain categories. They just deal with what’s served up to them. And, yes, if an actor has been fired, it’s very doubtful that any show will want to promote him/her a year later as a “Best Anything” & draw attention away from their current cast.

Alison Sweeney is a shoo-in to win!!! Gina Tognoni?? REALLY??? She is a fabulous actress, but her Phyllis is SO angry and the writing has not been up to par. I loved her as Dinah on GL. But I am #TeamSami on this one, I have loved her since the mid 90s!!!!!

Short and sweet, I want Anthony Geary to WIN and Hunter King to LOSE!

We all want to see Hunter lose.

Heather Tom’s not nominated?

Yay for Alison Sweeney. James Scott should have been nominated.

I think for things where the four soaps are eligible, there should only be three nominees (like best drama, best directing, etc.)

I think Kim Matula should have been nominated.

roflmao

OMG

fall off my soapbox

Heather Tom gets nothing !

happy dance

sorry

had to go their

her histrionics and constant reward

Crazy that Blake Berris wasn’t nominated for younger actor, nor Casey for Days. But glad that Freddie that plays Sonny is. Really glad that Guy Wilson didn’t make it, that would have been a joke.

Glad to see Alison Sweeney get nominated, she deserved it this year. Also glad to see Gina Tognoni for Y&R, she has won two Emmys for playing Dinah on Guiding Light.

Blake and Casey should have been nominated. Maybe next year for Casey. Yes, also noted Guy wasn’t nominated. Good. He’s horrible on the show and has made me dislike Will and any story his in.

Go Alison!

In an earlier post in another thread, I mentioned how ludicrous the acting nominations typically are. And the trend continues…

1. Most of the actors in the “younger” category wouldn’t do justice to a high-school production. Hunter King?!?! Tequan Richmond?!?! Camila Banus?!?!

2. Billy Miller and Elizabeth Hendrickson have been off Y&R for close to a year and a half now; and if they are referencing the Delia death plot, then Michael Muhney is the only deserving actor.

3. Peggy McKay is indeed a good actress, but she’s only on a handful of episodes each year, and her so-called big Alzheimer’s storyline took place well over a year ago.

4. The show, writing, and directing categories (among others) include all four shows. Does that really represent excellence?

Here are a few deserved categories and shoo-in winners:

1. Best use of fake trees: DOOL. The trees should be in the running for acting as well, given that they do journeyman’s work almost everyday.

2. Contrived, insulting, fly-by-night storytelling: GH.

3. Worst use of cast resources: GH. By all means, let’s forget about all the wonderful and beloved actors on recurring bases and, instead, create new characters Hayden and Valerie, among others. And let’s keep writing constant story for the despicable Sonny.

4. Best agility at infuriating viewers with never-ending, meandering plots: It’s a tie! GH (for its convoluted Fluke storyline); and GH (for the Jake is really Jason storyline).

5. Best use of a transgender storyline: B&B. Oh, wait… You mean there’s only one soap with a transgender character? Well, if we can justify having an Emmy Awards show with just 4 soaps on the air, we can certainly justify having this category.

I love this post, James. It’s articulate and clever.
I think Michael Muhney did not submit a reel, hence his not being nominated. I hope that is true.

Thank you, Harry! And thanks for the info on Muhney.

I completely agree about the younger actor/actress category, it’s a joke. None of the nominees deserve to win.

As for Michael Muhney, I know he didn’t submit himself as a nominee this year due to the scandal going on with his firing, but he did some of the best work daytime has ever seen this year, along with Billy Miller. Their scenes together were the spotlight of Y&R in 2014.

Thanks, Jimmy. I think the younger actor/actress category is always a joke. Thanks for the info on Muhney.

J-a-m-e-s…RIGHT ON, BROTHER!!!!! I think that your post here speaks ENDLESS VOLUMES!!!!! But of course, I-I-I have some things that I wanna say here…

1. Caroline’s Alzheimer’s storyline was wonderfully written and wonderfully told (especially in the beginning). Then, one day, the storyline was suddenly dropped from the show. W-H-Y?!?!? Now…no offense to THE VERY FABULOUS Peggy McKay, but…why was she even nominated this year?!?!? And for what?!?!? Because of a storyline (as wonderfully told as it was at the time) that ended WELL OVER a year ago?!?!? H-U-H?!?!? I’m sorry but I just don’t get it. No.
2. That OVERRATED Anthony Geary nominated…as in A-G-A-I-N?!?!? PLEASE, GH…NO MORE!!!!! I mean…soap fans (like myself, for one) have SUFFERED ENOUGH!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!!
3. Amelia Heinle nominated…FOR WHAT?!?!? For playing a one-dimensional, one-note and whiny character?!?!? Not impressed here. Sorry.
4. Hunter King being nominated is such a J-O-K-E!!!!! And nominated for what?!?!? For playing an UNWATCHABLE CHARACTER who won’t stop CRYING AND WHINING about the supposed death of her supposedly dead husband (aka Austin)?!?!? Wah Wah Wah!!!!! Oh, enough already!!!!! As far as I’m concerned, Camryn Grimes (who plays that WONDERFULLY KICK-ASS Mariah!!!!!) should have been nominated INSTEAD…and N-O-T that Hunter King chick!!!!! TOTAL B-L-A-H!!!!!!!!!!
5. In general, I am N-O-T IMPRESSED with the list of Emmy Nominations for this year…AT ALL!!!!! Nope.

James…as always, have a good one, Brother!!!!! Peace.

Thanks, jaybird369! No surprise we agree on most of this. Glad you brought up Tony Geary. My sentiments exactly. “Overrated!” And you’re so right about Amelie Heinle, Hunter King, and Camryn Grimes.

Peace to you, too, Brother!

The Emmy nominations are based on episodes that aired from Jan 1 2014 to dec 31 2014.

Thanks for the info, Chris.

I was searching for that answer, that explains much!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Michael Muhney leave the show at the end of 2013. Pretty sure even he isn’t good enough to be nominated for a year that he wasn’t on a show.

I stand corrected. Just looked it up, his last air date was Jan 30, 2014.

Thanks for the info, W.R.

The Daytime Emmys is not just for soaps. It’s for other daytime shows as well.

Thanks for the update, Mo!

Don’t tell me Elizabeth Henderson is going to get an award for her two minutes standing in a graveyard rubbing her belly? But the nominations are not fixed right???

You’re absolutely right, Nikki. On-screen time apparently makes no difference, and clearly politics and popularity play a huge role in all this.

That is exactly right FIXED all the usual talented stars Nikki Newman, Sharon Case, Tracey Bregman, etc. none have either been nominated or put anything in. In that way the less popular one’s get a chance to win. Why else would actresses like Heather Tom or Katherine Kelly Lang not put in or get nominated. This is just a joke that won’t be watched by many.

love love love me some Peggy McKay but has she really had big story lately in the past year? i have not watched much so maybe i am completely in the dark.

also gina tognoni is ok but really thats a stretch.

I believe Peggy got the nod for her scenes at Will and Sonny’s wedding. If you missed the scene it was truly moving– Peggy really captured Caroline’s sadness and inner rage at the way gay men and women were treated in her day– it was very powerful and obviously the Academy panels thought so too. As a stated before when it comes to these awards it is quality and quantity that counts, so all she needed was one good scene to submit– they don’t judge by how much you did, just what you did in those reels.

Gina Tognoni will win, because she is a wonderful actress and is a great Phyllis.

I have always loved Gina Tognoni…not impressed with her as Phyllis, Laura. I do respect your opinion. For me? My gosh, Maura West is invincible, albeit it does not mean she will win…LOL.

Cee Cee Maura West is talented but she not invincible. She does not rank in Susan Flannery , Erica Slezak, Jeanne Cooper, Heather Tom , Kim Zimmer etc

Y&R needed Gina Tognoni in the run..
there were no greats with Y&R that gave great outstanding performances the past year, someone need in ..
Hunter, was horrible! Her constant loud whining and fake crying, no tears, just noise is not great acting it was whining..
And Gina all noise.. way overkill on the bitching and more bitching also loud lol

Neither were great just noticeable from all their bitching and whining = not great actin.

Talk about red hot competition, all four daytime soaps are nominated for “best show” and other categories. Meaningless awards with so few soaps on thenair. Oscars and regular Emmys have huge numbers of shows and actors to pick nominees from. Daytime TV awards are a joke.

Pegggy McKay i am sure submitted the episode where she made the speeech at sonny and Wills wedding

without doubt, Gina Tognoni debuted on Y&R : August 11, 2014

talk about block voting…

Yeah, surprised to see Gina nominated, but good luck to her.

Not much B&B action. Why doesn’t Don Diamont get nominated? He should have several Emmys by now.

To me GT is just now beginning to calm down no way do I think her work over there was better then SC or MTS but maybe they did not submit! Also JFP really manipulates you have no idea how she works the system. The only one I am interested in is Sweeney winning for 21 years and boy did she grow as an actress.

Well, Peggy/Caroline did pop in to Eric’s the other day and enjoyed Serena’s muffins. I was very convinced that she enjoyed them.

i totally forgot about the wedding and she was fantastic but that seems so long ago? i felt the same way about billy miller being nominated for his dee dee death scenes wasnt that like 2013? or am i off my rocker?

Guys, say what you want about GT………….I WAS pretty shocked she submitted herself for Lead Actress considering she was just debuting on Y&R but after what she submitted, IT’S LEAD and she rocked that episode where she confronted Jack over Kelly! Same goes for Billy Miller’s reel when he found out about Adam’s involvement over Delia’s death!

CG is WTH moment right now………….She had great material last year and didn’t make the final list for Younger Actress! Same for DD too for Lead Actor!

Haven’t read all the comments yet, but I’m sooooo thrilled General Hospital leads the nominees with 28!!!! Having seen the politics behind the scenes year after year, and even being on a voting panel of a country music award show, seeing the politics-you scratch mine, I’ll scratch yours, I was worried Young and Restless would sweep as usual. Not that they don’t have talent, they do, but it was not really their year-a bit off their game but still #1!! Let’s not forget General Hospital did NOT even make the cut last year as best show!!

I’m very thrilled that Linda Elena Tovar entered in Special Appearance cause I love her stint as Rosalie on GH! LOVE that Billy Miller scored another nom for his Billy Abbott stint on Y&R. JFP needs to know what she lost. I don’t mean to be rude, but look who is NOT nominated: NuBilly Burgess Jenkins and JPF’s pet Steve Burton-who DID make the pre-nom cut. This is what JFP traded for BM IMO.
Also note that YR’s 2 LEAD ACTOR NOMS-NM she ran off and CLB they WON’T write for!! He’s on twice a month-SHAME!
Also missing is Camryn Grimes! Wow! She was the projected winner on many sites! Also bummed Casey Moss didn’t make the cut for his fine work as JJ on Days!! I know their reels play a big part! Can’t wait to see them all!!

I really hate that I didn’t check my post before I hit send- I meant JFP ran off Billy Miller and won’t write for CLB as Michael on YR! Shame.

I never said I thought Geary deserved it I just figure every time he is up they give it to him!

Who picked these people besides the head producers? In the Y & R where is Tracey Bregman, Sharon Case, Mishael Morgan, Cady McClain? Are you people also saying nom.’s we’re accepted by Hunter King but not by Camryn Grimes or Karla Mosley who could do circles around her and what about Peter Bregman? Why don’t we just call it the list of people the producers have promoted. None of the real actors/actresses are in it except for a couple. So on that note let the baby’s have their trinklets while the shows wonder why the ratings for these awards are always down.

Cady should have been nominated as supporting. Totally agree. Maybe next year.

Your right Mo but I think they hold back a lot of the nominee’s to give the others a chance. Last year Hunter King won over Camryn Grimes and Lindsey Godfrey. I think the shock wave ran over most Y & R fans now this year they put her up again. This is just plain unfair. Let’s face it what did she do exactly? There should be an award for the most hated and have Y & R fans vote on it.I still can’t believe Camryn Grimes & Karla Mosley(Maya) B&B not up for one. It’s not surprising they have a hard time finding sponsors for this award show.

After the exec producers decide the actors to submit in specific categories, there is a “pre-nomination” process open to voters, who are members of the Natl Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. It’s like a political primary to whittle down the numbers of nominees in each category. The final round of voting to decide the winners of each award is done by “peer panels” whose members change every year. You may not like the selections. But, it really is the tv industry voting on their peers. Producers are only involved in the pre-nominations; not further. NATAS also selects winners for primetime Emmys.

And if you believe that B.S. I have a wonderful piece of property on an ocean front for sale. Last year Doug Davidson was up for one…for what walking around his office? Dylan M. was up for one… for what making coffee? And the worst of the worst was Hunter King up against Lindsey Godfrey & Camryn Grimes…for what whining and pouting? If your right this peer panel is pushed on what & who to pick.

Peer panels are made up from the membership, and can be actors, directors, producers, etc. the only restriction is that they cannot be nominated for anything in the same year they are on a panel. A couple of years ago, Kristen Alderson mentioned she was on a panel & had a bunch of tapes she needed to watch. Don’t know how the panel is picked every year. One of the main complaints in the past was that a lot of panelists didn’t watch daytime programming, & were just voting based on familiarity, friendly association, or reputation. Don’t know how true that is. What’s worse – to have panels filled with daytime professionals who will predictably vote for their own shows or panels filled with non-daytime professionals who may, or may not, watch the submitted material & take voting seriously?

Very happy to see GH finally get some well deserved love after being snubbed last year. I’m sure that makes the “Frank and Ron are ruining GH” crowd very unhappy.

Same for Finola Hughes and Maura West. Both were inexplicably left off the list last year, so it’s great to see them getting some well deserved recognition this year. Those are the two names I’m most happy to see.

The only way Tony Geary doesn’t win is if the voters decide he’s already won enough. But it should be about the performance, and if an actor is good, he’s good, whether he’s won no Emmys or 20 Emmys.

I think it’s a shame Maurice Bernard isn’t in that Lead Actor category. IMO he had an EXCELLENT year in 2014. Sonny isn’t even my favorite character. Yet, Bernard was mesmerizing in a lot of his scenes with his two talented sons – Duell and Craig.

As for Tony Geary, I have loved Luke since 1980. While I have often thought he should do a “Candice Bergen” & stop submitting himself, 2014 was different. He was gone for half the year, underwent an excruciating surgery & recovery, and STILL managed to keep viewers mesmerized via tablet. I can’t blame the guy for agreeing to submit himself one more time in what must have been a challenging year personally. He deserves another nomination for being the solid center of the crazy mystery theme that made GH popular.

Couldn’t agree with you more on Maurice Benard. He’s always tremendous in everything he does, but for whatever reason, never seems to get any recognition. If I recall, I don’t remember seeing his name on the Emmy pre-nomination list, so maybe it’s possible he didn’t submit his name for consideration this year. It’s a shame, because he definitely belongs among the best actors in daytime. He’s been doing it, and doing it well on GH for 22 years now.

I’m pretty sure Tony didn’t submit himself in 2013 and 2014, so I think he only submits his name when he feels he has the quality work to back it up. Everyone can have their opinions on whether they liked the Fluke storyline or not, but as far as the performance went, Tony hit it out of the park every time. To me, he has to be the odds on favorite this year.

Well I just want to extend congratulations to all those who were nominated. I really hope to be able to watch all their reels to get a better idea which scenes are being used for consideration. It is solely based on those reels and those reels alone the Academy will vote on– it doesn’t matter what they did or didn’t do the rest of the year, that reel is all that matters.

Don’t the actors have to submit themselves first before they can be considered for final nominations? A lot of actors (SC, JS, etc) probably didn’t bother.

I hope these win:

Drama series: GH
Lead actress: Maura West
Lead actor: Anthony Geary
Supporting actress: Finola Hughes
Supporting actor: Chad Duell
Younger actress: Haley Pullos
Younger actor: Tequan Richmond
Special guest performer: Donna Mills or Linda Elena Tovar

That ^^^^^ is way better than this;
Michael LeBlanc <— good
Gina Tognoni <— good
Kristoff St. John <— not all that
Amelia Heinle <— so not good
Elizabeth Hendrickson <— so-so
Max Ehrich <— good
Hunter King <— bad bad screaming banshee
Billy Miller <—- only great one

You would not be a GH watcher lol!

I couldn’t agree more. I hope the award’s wipe the floor with Y & R.

There is something ludicrous about Best Daytime Drama and so many of the other categories having four nominees–and they’re all four of the remaining soaps. I know there are extremely talented actors out there and there have been some rock solid scripts written over the past year, but the competition is very light when there’s only four shows left.

I also agree about Peggy McKay being in the wrong category. I’m not a big Alison Sweeney fan, but she deserved the nomination. Glad to see annual favorites like Heather Tom not nominated. She’s a talented actress but for too long, I’ve felt like there just was a box next to her name to be checked by the voters every year. Nominations should be for those who truly deserve it and not an annual expectation. Still, I feel like the nominations were spread over the four shows so that no one felt left out and that’s disappointing to me.

So is Finola Hughes& Scott Cliftion

Congrats CBS and DAYS on emmy nominations including Alison Sweeney!
Y&R for Best Drama!

Three glaring omissions here are James Scott, Sharon Case and Roger Howarth. They were not even mentioned in the pre-noms and should have been nominated, as they all did phenomenal work this year.

Also, what is up with Peggy McKay being in the lead actress category? She is lovely, but she’s barely on and hardly deserving of a lead actress nod. And where is Michelle Stafford?! the lady is on FIRE as Nina Clay, just like she was as Phyllis. Blake Berris should also be there, same with Camryn Grimes. And why on EARTH is Linda Elena Tovar in the special guest star category?! Complete misplacement! Haley Pullos and Tequan Richmond are also puzzling because of the lack of on-screen time.

I really want Jason Thompson to take it this year as lead actor. I know, Tony Geary did some amazing work, but he will undoubtedly be included next year’s Emmys for his performance when the truth about Luke comes out in the next few episodes.

As for lead actress, I’m really torn between Maura West and Alison Sweeney. I love them both, but I think this is Ali’s year. She did some truly amazing work, and Maura will also undoubtedly be nominated for next year because of her work with the cancer story, which is outstanding as per usual.

I have loved Tony Geary from the start but he doesn’t deserve any award from that Fluke nonsense. GH is a complete cartoon these days.
Bryan Craig couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag.
He’s a pinup boy nothing more.
Chad Duel is better that he was before but that’s not saying much.
Gina T deserves her award because has been an outstanding recast and giving amazing performances.
Y&R should win best soap because it’s the only one left worth watching. Camryn Grimes should’ve been nominated for younger actress. Hunter King is good but too over the top. CG has been amazing as Mariah.

My Emmys would go something like this:

Ghosts of the year: Its a tie, Lucky and Laura Spencer

Ghost on the show who should be on everyday: Monica Q

Actor whose face never moves: Its a tie Jackie Zeman and Ian Buchanan

If only his abs could act award goes to: Ryan Paevey

Most tasteful story: Luke taking a bite out of Scotty’s ear

Least tasteful story: Scooby Dooby Doo

Can he have his old job back award: Its a tie Steve Burton Billy Miller

They can never put two and two together award: Oops its a three way tie Dante Lulu Maxie

One trick Pony Award: Spinelli

Waste of talent award: Another tie Joe Clark and Ashley Abbott

Never get tied of them award: Tony Geary and Jane Elliot

Can we get a story Award: Franco and Nina

Dont let the door hit you in the A** Award: Crychael, Dumbte, Nathan, Jordan, T.J, Burgess, Austin’s flashback, Summer and Dullan.

The face I look forward to seeing everyday on Daytime: Wally Kurth

The face I DO NOT look forward to seeing everyday: Its not winter, spring or fall, you guessed it, SUMMER!

All in fun, I love the soaps and never take them for granted and thank the networks for keeping them on. Good luck to all the nominees. No would someone grow a set of balls and hire Michael Muhney!!!

Once a accusation like what happened to MM gets out there in the Daytime world it is over for them in that area. No matter what the truth may or may not be we lost a great talent a terrible waste.

You really did it this time, Timmm. I knew you had a lot more in you. You are hilarious…how do you come up with this stuff? OMG…can’t stop laughing !!!!

Thanks CeeCee. I learned a long time ago that if cry, you may have one or two people who care BUT if you can make people laugh, you have the whole room! Plus, I have a great deal of passion for GH and Y&R so its easy to lampoon the two and I only do it because they are such a big part of my day and crazy but true, like family.

@Timmm.
Oh, Timmm. I can certainly identify with what you are saying. Soaps, especially Y&R , have been a constant in my life since I was in diapers….I got really into it later on, so, it is also like family to me. When OLTL and AMC went off the air, it felt like someone had died…..left me mourning…..sigh!!

I’m thrilled General Hospital has been given an even playing field,
FINALLY. Hoping Maura West takes it away….

I can’t wait till abc gets the rights back for one life to live so they can intertwine oltl and GH again
And then they will have all the oltl fan pulling for them to congratulate GH on all your nominations !!

HUH?!?!? Why is ‘Outstanding Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design For A Drama Series’ even a category?!?!? Back in the day, on Y&R, my ALL-TIME 3 FAVE SETS (or whatever) were (and still are)…
1. Lorie Brooks’s penthouse apartment. From the mid-1970’s to the early 1980’s (I think.), that penthouse apartment was THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!! Among other things, the penthouse apartment was on the top floor (if I remember correctly), it had a big, spacious and beautifully decorated living room and it had an AWESOME spiral staircase located somewhere towards the back of the living room. To me, that place TRULY ROCKED!!!!!
2. The Williams’s Family House. To me, that house was TOTALLY representative and all of the Williams Family…who were a loving, close-knit and hard-working family. And…it was PLENTY BIG!!!!!
3. Gina’s Restaurant. To me, Gina’s restaurant was THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!! I mean…it looked like a REAL RESTAURANT and (to me) Gina looked like a HARD-WORKING AND HANDS-ON OWNER of her own restaurant. TOTALLY!!!!!

My point here: To me, Lorie’s penthouse, The Williams’s Family House and Gina’s restaurant (back then) were examples (or whatever) of R-E-A-L designed sets and all!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!

Peace.

Jaybird! Very descriptive and interesting. I wasn’t watching Y&R then, but I miss so much about GH pre-Sonny (all the way back to 1969). The 7th Floor Nurses Station was always a great set.

While we’re on the subject of great sets, what shocks me is the huge variety of abodes on the soaps: past and present.

Carriage House (OLTL)
Tack House (Y&R)
Penthouse (several soaps, incl. GH)
Lighthouse (GH)

I know I’m forgetting some. Maybe you can add more, Jay! Peace!

Here are my picks for each category:

Outstanding Drama Series: GH

Outstanding Lead Actress: Between Alison Sweeney of Days, Gina Tognoni of Y&R, and Maura West of General Hospital

Outstanding Lead Actor: Between Tony Geary of GH, Christian LeBlanc of Y&R, Billy Miller formerly of Y&R.

Outstanding Supporting Actress: Amelia Heinle of Y&R

Outstanding Supporting Actor: Kristoff St. John of Y&R

Outstanding Younger Actress: Hunter King of Y&R

Outstanding Younger Actor: Bryan Craig of GH

Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team: GH

Outstanding Drama Series Directing Team: GH

Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series: Meredith Baxter of Y&R

Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series: Toss up between Y&R and GH

Outstanding Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design for a Drama Series: Y&R

Outstanding Lighting Direction for a Drama Series: All three nominees could win

Outstanding Costume Design for a Drama Series: B&B

Outstanding Hairstyling for a Drama Series: GH or Y&R

Outstanding Makeup for a Drama Series: GH or Y&R

Would loved for Lauren/Days’ Ciara to be nominated. She does such a great job.

She really is good, isn’t she, Mo? That kid’s acting is so effortless and natural….there’s something about Lauren Boles that draws the viewer right in…know what I mean? I agree, she should have been given a nomination, at least.

Why Is Peggy McKay nominated and furthermore in lead actress category? Laura wright’s scenes at the wedding where Michael broke her heart were in incredible.

How it should go & how it will go…Outstanding Drama Should go General Hospital…Outstanding lead actress should go Maura West but will go to Gena Tognoni….Outstanding lead actor should be Billy Miller but it will go to Anthony Geary….Outstanding supporting actress should go to Lindsey Godfrey but will go to Elizabeth Henderickson…..outstanding supporting actor should go to Jacob Young but will go to Kristoff St. John or else a racist card will be played…Outstanding younger actress should go to Kristen Alderson G.H. but will go to Hunter King. Outstanding younger actor should be… Bryan Craig G.H. but will go to Max Ehrich Y& R…Outstanding writing team should go to B.B. but will go to G.H….Outstanding special guest should be Ray Wise but will go to Sally Kellerman because of her age.

Oh, no, Nikki. Do you really think GT will win over MW? Gina hasn’t done anything extraordinary….nothing except get into stupid, petty cat-fights with Kelly over a similarly stupid, randy, too-much-air-time-Jack storyline.
If GT wins? Well, then, there’s something really wrong with the rating system.

Maura West should win but Gina T. is fairly new to Y& R and has been off the soap scene for awhile (since Guiding Light) so she’ll get it. Just look at Doug Davidson last year. When they do it fairly I’ll be watching it, but I won’t hold my breath on that day anytime soon. Hunter King again 4 what?????

Really watch her emmy reel. Its good, will she win probably not.

Nicolas Bechtel (Spencer Cassadine/GH) was robbed.

Agree! But, soaps rarely recognize very young actors who act like little grown ups. They seem to prefer their youngsters traumatized or dying.

Thinking about it. You know what I would love to see? I know their is a union for these actors/actresses I would love to see in Y & R Michael Baldwin,Hilary Winters,Nick Newman,Kelly Andrews, Kevin,Nikki Newman,Jill Abbott, Adam /Gabriel,Jack Abbott,Victor Newman,Lauren Fenmore, Sharon Newman,Ashley Abbott,Mariah/Cassie Newman,Lily Winters, Billy Abbott…all walk out at the same time leaving the baby’s to run the soap. Do it for a couple of weeks. Lets see how the fans like the show then.

now that there are only four(4) network soaps to hold a competition seems odd. An award for best actress meant something when there were 10+ shows meant something. They should take our soaps from the daytime Emmys. They in no way reflect the Emmys from the late 70s and early 80s.

I have been watching both Y&R and GH for over 30 years. And I want to know WHY Maurice Benard (G.H. Sonny) has not been nominated for lead actor in the last few years? NEXT YEAR he better get nominated … His arrest and prison stay episodes were fantastic!

@code.
With all due respect, code…….I have never once compared Maura West to Erika S. Or Susan F. So, do not put words in my mouth. There is probably a thirty-year difference between them. Those actresses are from a different generation. That is not to say I do not love Erika and Susan. I miss them on my scree, especially Erika. I admire and respect her.
We are speaking of today and now….Alison or Maura….which one? I am comparing Maura to Alison. You prefer Alison; I prefer Maura. Why is that a problem for you?

@code.
Are you sure you are not someone else?

???? I like Maura too, but overall Alison out did her.

@code
I love Ali but Maura is a much superior actress and has the better feel. I think Ali will win but won’t be shocked if Maura gets that third emmy..she is amazing as AVA Jerome.

Maura west has played on three soaps and has bbeen successful on two of them. Her version of Diane was atrocious ! It was not all the writers fault. She went a role she was not her fit for her acting. 2 emmys wins does not you superior actor over another. The great Jeanne Cooper only won one , but she out act all the current nominees. By the way I was in drama for 4 yrs. I know what good acting, wooden acting, bad acting is.

My Picks for Emmy’s

Days Of Our Lives

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

Lisa Rinna Would Be Down to Reprise Her Role of Taylor McBride in ‘Melrose Place’ Reboot

When Lisa Rinna departed her popular role of Billie Reed on Days of our Lives back in 1995, her next major role would be a jump to primetime and the soapy Melrose Place.

In 1996, Lisa was introduced as new character Taylor McBride and stayed with the Fox young adult sudser for three seasons. Now in 2024, with the recent reveal that a Melrose Place revival is the works with Heather Locklear, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton all on board to reprise their signature roles, would Rinna board the project should it come to fruition?

Speaking with PEOPLE, Rinna expressed, “Well, gosh, I’ve heard about it. I haven’t been approached or anything, but I would love to see what Taylor McBride is up to 25 years later. Wouldn’t that be something?”

Photo: FOX

OG Melrose Place fans know that in story, Taylor moved to the Melrose Place apartment building with her husband Kyle played by Rob Estes. However, Taylor had her eye on Dr. Peter Burns played by former GH star Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco). But, by the time she had moved to the apartment complex, Peter had married tough as nails ad executive, Amanda Woodward, played by Heather Locklear.

Recalling her time on Melrose Place, Rinna added that it, “was one of my greatest and most fun acting experiences, playing Taylor and working with Heather and the whole crew.”  Rinna also noted, “So if they need a Taylor McBride appearance, they know who to call. I’m around.”

The new Melrose Place is in development at CBS Studios. In the premise of the reboot, the Melrose Place residents reunite after the death of one of their friends, “but the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”

Kristian Alfonso Returns to Days of our Lives for Tribute to The Late Bill Hayes

After a few weeks of Days of our Lives fans being upset that Kristian Alfonso (Hope Williams) was not on the first list of initial returns for Doug Williams’ funeral and episodes honoring his portrayer, the late Bill Hayes, comes word that the popular star is back and taping scenes.

Kristian reported to work on the Peacock streaming soap opera on Monday, April 22nd. She shared how important it is for her to be back for this particular return to the show that made her a household name.

“My return is very bittersweet,” Alfonso told TV Insider,  “because it is the end of an era with Bill gone. So to return to Days is very sad. I am appreciative that they came to me to include me in their series of shows honoring Doug and I’m very happy to see everyone, but I’m entering the studio with a heavy heart.”

It was back in 1983 that Kristian first debuted as Doug’s daughter, and now 41 years later looking back at it, and her time with Bill Hayes is very emotional for her.

“I remember my first scenes with him/ He was very loving, very welcoming. That he was very talented and an incredible actor and an icon, that all goes without saying, but my personal relationship and my working relationship with Bill, it was home,” expressed Alfonso. “Doing the scenes with Bill, I felt like I was with my dad because there was so much warmth and reality.”

Photo: JPI

Alfonso did express some deep regret, in that she had wanted to work with Bill Hayes during her last appearance on the soap back in 2023, but according to the iconic actress, there was something in the works but it never materialized.  “I’m sad that I did not get the opportunity to do the storyline that Ron (Carlivati, head writer) had planned/ It was great; we returned to Salem to reunite with our families and I would have had father/daughter scenes with Billy. What Ron had written was beautiful and emotional and it was a fantastic story. I was 100 percent for it and the fans would have loved it.”

As for if Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope will be back on-screen together anytime soon, Kristian would only say, “What I will say is don’t give up hope.” Doug’s passing and memorial episodes will stream later this year come late November into December.

So, are you happy to learn that Kristian Alfonso is back taping episodes surrounding Doug’s memorial episodes? Comment below.
