46th Daytime Emmys: Y&R Takes Drama Series; GH’s Maurice Benard & B&B’s Jacqueline MacInnes Wood Top Acting Honors
Sunday night at the 46th annual Daytime Emmys, it was The Young and the Restless and General Hospital that were the big winners overall in major categories as the gold was handed out in ceremonies that were streamed online and via social media live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California as presented by NATAS.
The Young and the Restless took home the Daytime Emmy in the three major show categories, a trend that was started last year by Days of our Lives when they did the same thing in the drama series, writing and directing categories. For last night, Y&R (under ousted EP and head writer Mal Young’s work) won in the same categories. Y&R won on the strength of their submissions which centered around the night J.T. was “murdered” by Nikki after his confrontation with Victoria, and episodes surrounding the Abbott family drama, where Ashley dupes Jack into believing he is not John Abbott’s biological son as part of her revenge plot.
In the major performer categories, it was mostly a golden night for the town of Port Charles led by Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series winner, Maurice Benard (Sonny), who finally won his 2nd Emmy. The last time Benard won for his work was 15 years ago, when the show was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Benard’s castmate and scene partner, Max Gail (Mike) took home the prize for Outstanding Supporting Actor, while Vernee Watson (Stella) did the same in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category. Hayley Erin (Ex-Kiki), who had left GH, for PPL: The Perfectionists, won in the Outstanding Younger Actress category. In addition, Patricia Bethune took home the prize for her work as Nurse Mary Pat in the Outstanding Guest Performer category,.
The Lead Actress category was won by new mom, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood for her portrayal of Steffy Forresster on The Bold and the Beautiful, while the Younger Actor winner was Days of our Lives’ Kyler Pettis for his role as Theo Carver. Pettis won for his exit scenes from the NBC soap opera.

Some were ok but some others my gosh i see why im bored with award shows…Max Gail was great in the beginning but his story began to take a nose dive in the last few weeks…GH has its ups and downs as does Days…cant we have more commonplace stories instead of all the gloom and doom in almost every episodes!!!!
When they shipped Mike off to a full care facility I knew he would disappear. What a shame. I thought he would be back for Mays sweeps but they are focusing on Oscar. Oh well.
I couldnt watch..just dealt with a death of my cousin found dead in a supermarket parking lot which is suspicious and still being investigated so i didnt watch most of GH when Oscar died!!!
Sorry Jim, I can totally understand why you would tune out. We tune IN to soaps to escape. When you yourself experience something horrible in your own life, my God, do soaps matter?
I am happy that Y&R won Drama Series, Writing and Directing. When the show was announced as the Drama Series Emmy winner, I can easily tell that much of the cast and the current head writer Josh Griffith and current EP Anthony Morina were extremely uncomfortable being up there with Mal Young. It was awkwardness on full display. The only thing that I’m not happy about is the fact that Thad Luckinbill (ex-JT) and Amelia Heinle (Victoria) were not nominated at all for their work in the domestic abuse storyline. That was an utter travesty and joke.
By far, the biggest upset of the night was Jaqueline McInnes Wood winning for Lead Actress. Maura West should have won and I had picked her to win.
Did anyone else notice how empty the auditorium was by the end of the show? It was like no one wanted to be there at the end and all decided to go home.
When award shows are televised they have what they call ‘seat fillers’– most award shows people are going to the bathroom, the bar, hanging out with friends in the lobby, leaving early to go celebrate or drown their disappointment after their category was announced– only difference when televised seat fillers give the impression everyone sticks around for the whole show. What you saw was the real reality of these events.
The positive or take away from Y&R winning under Mr. Mal Young…CBS and Josh and company all need to stop and ponder…the vets were driving the story in the submissions. Who was acting up a storm? The people we had invested for years and a connection with. The winning stories were not around his new creations or characters. Story, story, story. Make us care, make us laugh, make us cry. All good CBS/Y&R. Keep it up. DO BETTER. Congratulations.
I’m stunned that Y&R won Outstanding Drama Series, Writing & Directing. Mal Young’s tenure was a train-wreck, and if the actual quality of the show was assessed for these award shows, there’s no way it would have won. While there were some standout episodes, like Hilary’s death and the ones submitted, the rest of the year failed to live up to what Y&R could be under strong leadership.
As for the winners, I really thought this would be Peter Bergman’s year. He’s almost always a nominee, but rarely a winner. Billy Flynn also did amazing work this year, and deserves recognition for his endless talents.
And what about Marci Miller?! She was overlooked again in what should have been a slam-dunk year for her. Don’t get me wrong, Jacqui Wood is a great actress, but Marci carried an entire storyline and did phenomenal work this year.
I expected Max Gail would win, and boy is it ever deserved. Vernee’s win was more surprising, because Stella is a peripheral character at best. But my prediction for next year’s younger actor categories will go to Eden McCoy and Garren Stitt. Oscar’s death, which is playing out on screen now, has really given them a chance to shine. They’re two of the finest young actors in daytime history.

he road on the coattails of Max Grand. Period
he said himself at his acceptance speech … he didn’t think he stood a chance. even I posted in a thread that his 5th spot belong to Drake Hogestyn for @Days.
he shared how he wrapped his 20 minute reel with the duet he and “dear” old Dad were shown from the Nurses Ball, sharing a song and dance. As I’ve posted Altzheimers has a life of it’s own…. and this was a given that this subject matter would forefront any other material. mindset
for whatever reason… and yes… I’d like to know who the emmy panel judges are !!!! seeing as none of the fans even got to see their emmy real.
bearing in mind that when so many persons who post here… watch day in and day out… every day folks… I tend to care about that post much more than any emmy panel.
Sorry Maurice beat out John Lindstrom , Billy Flynn, Tyler Chfistopher… in what life time does that happen… I DON”T GET IT> waste

Congrats to the General Hospital winners.
Y&R has a good track record of picking the one or two good moments it had in a year and submitting them– if the panel had to watch the rest of the episode after Nikki knocked JT on the head or endure the tedious year of finishing the story line, they might have thought better of it. There was a reason why they fired Mal.
I found most of the acting wins surprising except for Max Gail, but since the Academy didn’t release the nominees’ reels this year I am uncertain what scenes they “won” for– all the nominees are excellent in their craft so on some level they were all deserving, but not all would have been my choice if I had a vote.
I do know, by this time next week I would have completely forgotten who won and the only thing that will matter is what is happening on my screen that day.

Well, I’m sure all the “Sonny Haters” will jump all over his win BUT, he had some good material this past year with Max Gail. They both won and I’m cool with that.
Younger actress should have gone to Chloe Lanier. She was really good. BUT, we kept it in the family and Haley won! She was good as Kiki.
Young actor? Well, its a year to early. Next year Oscar [Twin brother] or Cameron will bring the gold to GH!
My main gripe is for female supporting actress. WTF! Vernee Watson? I was shocked she won last year and pissed this year. Now, she is a good actress but what story or scene she did stood out? NONE! Mishael should have won, hands down! Or even Beth. She is always good as Tracy!

Y&R owes their wins to Thad and Amelia. the biggest shocker to me was Jacqueline winning lead actress,i thought Maura was a shoo in. overall this was not a good show,boring at times
I have been an on and off viewer of The Bold and the Beautiful since the first episode. With that said, although I am not thrilled with the Hope storyline, I think Annika Noelle should have gotten some kind of nod for her hospital scenes when she was holding what she thought and still thinks was her baby. To be truthful, I wasn’t thrilled with her in the beginning, (not her personally, I just hate breaking in recasts). But those crying scenes she had, had me crying right along with her. With that being said, I just wish they would move things along at a brisker pace and let the poor girl have her baby back. They are turning Thomas into a psycho the way they are portraying him now.

What I don’t get is how these writers can put such trash into these actor’s mouths. Yes, they have definitely made Thomas into a psycho. To stand right there and tell another man, why he should have his wife. It’s ludicrous, to say the least. I can hardly stand watching this junk anymore.
Nice to see some vindication for Mal Young. I so wanted Beth Maitland to win, though. She was outstanding this year.
I agree with you sonniorsolita. I have been watching Y&R on and off since 1984, and I have been a Traci fan since her cat fighting days with Lauren over Danny. Beth Maitland really stepped up to the plate this year, between trying to hold the family together, during Jack and Ashley”s fighting, not to mention having her sick mother thinking she’s hired help, to her compassionate talks with Came about his divorce. She showed all sides. She deserved recognition for a job well done. Thanks for listening and happy viewing
Good news– it looks like they are going to pair Beth’s Traci with Cane– so more screen time for her– Bad news– they are pairing Traci with Cane- one of my less favorite characters–but it is about time they give her own story again, so if it has to be with Cane so be it- Traci with Cane is better than no Beth at all.

What do you think of Traci and Cane as a couple? Do you think this is where this is leading? I might me able to get used to it, I don’t know yet. Are Lauren and Jack overly friendly, or is it my imagination? Michael is hardly around anymore. What did you think of the young middle school looking boy that Kyle and Summer met with in NY, now coming to GC, for Summer??
A couple of things that I thought was interesting:
1. The crowd was, to put it kindly, sparse. Half the seats appeared to be empty.
2. The number of Y&R actors who were not there was glaring. AWOL: Eric Braeden; Melody Thomas Scott; Lauralee Bell; Eileen Davidson; Tracey Bregman; Amelia Heinle (who was very prominent in the nominated clip); Josh Morrow; Sharon Case.
Has this award show fallen that far? First, it can’t find a network to broadcast it. Now, it can’t even get a large turnout from those it employs.
I think it is time for those in charge to give some serious thought about scaling this thing back to a nice, informal lunch or to discontinue it altogether. From what I saw, the turnout was embarassing.
What a wonderful night for GH, winning 5 of 7 acting awards! Max Gail winning was the highlight for me, and it was so well deserved. The way he portrayed the progression of Alzheimer’s from the beginning to now with Mike away at the retirement home was an acting master class. I haven’t been this thrilled to see someone win an Emmy since Genie Francis finally won her first in 2007.
I was very happy to see Maurice Benard back in the win column after 16 years. It was long overdue. I honestly thought Jon Lindstrom would win, but Maurice was a pleasant surprise. They gave him a story that allowed him to be vulnerable, emotionally raw, and show a totally different side of Sonny, and it paid off. His critics can no longer say “All he ever does is the mob stuff.”
Congrats to all the winners. As an awards show, between the online feed going out for 10 minutes early in the show, to misspelled graphics, to rows upon rows of empty seats shown on camera all night, it was really embarrassing and sad to watch at times. It’s really a shame how far the standards have fallen compared to what the Daytime Emmys used to be, when they’d pack venues like Radio City Music Hall. I mean, at least hire some seat fillers, for god’s sake.
After all of the ‘bad press and internet babble from every so called insider” Y&R wins in the major categories, Writing, Directing, Drama Series, slated and shut down the noise and chatter, their talented actors, despite their omission in Outstanding Actress-Lead and Supporting, and Younger, was an insult, DOOL, and GH, has a revolving door of people,so many new faces playing to the camera, you never know who is no on that show, they all “look” and “sound” alike, too much “young love chatter” is simply not working…….I still despise GH, because they took the business model of”profession who shakes down people,esquire, developed and created and his family all the while,leaving little room for the original family of the series, and their offspring any room to thrive and breathe, in the drama.The Q family simply disappeared from the canvas…..enough of Sonny and his kids.
My comment is positive did not watch but read about it can only say Hayley Erin deserved it she came from being a disastrous actress to a fine one she worked on her craft cared enough to improve and not phone it in. Congrats well deserved!!

CBS Orders Michele Van Jean Soap Opera ‘The Gates’ to Series; Set to Debut January 2025
Great news! Soap fans are getting the first new daytime drama in 25 years with the news today that CBS has moved Michele Van Jean’s The Gates to a series order.
In addition, the show is set to bow in January 0f 2025, which means that it appears that the new soap will replace The Talk, which was just canceled and will end after its upcoming 15th season in December of 2024. No specific time period, or exact premiere date has been set as of yet.
In the premise of the The Gates it follows lives of a wealthy Black family who live in a luxurious gated community.

The Gates has Val Jean as its writer, showrunner and one of its executive producers. Soap fans know Val Jean’s work best for her work on the writing teams of General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful. Taking to X, Michele shared: “It’s go time” citing the news on the show coming to CBS in 2025 via Deadline.
Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner will serve as executive producers on The Gates production team. The soap has been in development through a the joint venture between CBS Studios and the NAACP, which was established to help elevate a diverse range of voices and increase the visibility of Black artists.
The series will be produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP venture in partnership with P&G Studios, which is a division of Procter & Gamble, who used to be very big in the soap opera game.

‘The Talk’ Renewed For 15th and Final Season to End in December; Does Its Cancellation Make Room for ‘The Gates’?
Things just got very interesting over at CBS daytime with the announcement today that The Talk is going to end its run on the network after its 15th season, and that season looks to be shortened as the series will come to its conclusion in December of 2024.
In a joint statement, Amy Reisenbach, President, CBS Entertainment and David Stapf, President, CBS Studio, shared, “The Talk broke new ground when it launched 14 years ago by returning daytime talk to CBS with a refreshing and award-winning format. Throughout the years, it has been a key program on CBS’ top rated daytime line-up as it brought timely, important and entertaining topics and discussions into living rooms around the globe.”
Reisenback and Stapf added, “It goes without saying that hosting and producing a year-round talk show is no easy task, and we express our sincere gratitude to our amazing hosts Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell and Sheryl Underwood, our Executive Producer/Showrunner Rob Crabbe and the hardworking producing team and crew.

Giving props to those who co-hosted or worked on the show through the years including: Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen Moonves, Carrie Ann Inaba Leah Ramimi, Marissa Janet Winokur, Holly Robinson Peete, Eve, Aisha Tyler, and Sharon Osbourne, the joint statement added, “We also want to acknowledge our former show hosts and colleagues who contributed throughout the seasons. We truly appreciate the skill, creativity, and dedication everyone involved brought to the show every day. And of course, we thank the numerous guests who appeared, and the millions of viewers who tuned in daily. For the final season, we plan to celebrate the show and give it the proper sendoff it deserves when it concludes in December 2024.”
While no firm decision or announcement has been given at this time, it seems most likely that The Talk’s time slot could be given to the new soap opera in development The Gates from CBS Studio Ventures and from longtime soap opera writer. Michele Val Jean. As previously reported, The Gates features the lives of a wealthy Black family who reside in a posh, gated community.

The Talk was originally the brainchild of Sara Gilbert, who had developed the show when it launched back 2010 and it replaced the beloved As the World Turns which went off the air after 54 years when CBS canceled it.

O. J. Simpson Dead at 76: Real-Life Murder Trial in Which He Was Acquitted, Changed the Trajectory of Soap Operas
Former Pro Football superstar, O. J. Simpson, who became infamous for being on trial for the murders of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, has passed away at the age of 76 of cancer.
Simpson’s family put out a statement sharing, “Our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”
It was the murder trial that overtook the airwaves back in late 1994 and through most of 1995 that changed the landscape of daytime television forever, and in particular soap operas that many will recall.

On June 12, 1994, Nicole Simpson, O.J.’s former wife, and her friend, Ron Goldman, were brutally murdered. When O.J. became the prime suspect, a wild pursuant of him by the police while in his white Ford Bronco was viewed on every network by some 95 million viewers. This June marks 30-years since the incident.
Ultimately, Simpson was charged with Brown Simpson and Goldman’s murders, though he was acquitted in what was dubbed The Trial of the Century.
The trial permeated the airwaves of every network and any time of day. Networks consistently interrupted soap operas while covering the day in and day out of the spectacle that was this star athlete and TV and film star’s trial.
With many of the soaps pre-empted on a regular basis, the public fascination of Simpson’s trial was to many better than a soap opera as it has all the ingredients. Writer Dominic Dunne noted the themes via an article in Vanity Fair of “interracial marriage, love, lust, lies, hate, fame, wealth, beauty, obsession, spousal abuse, stalking, brokenhearted children, the bloodiest of bloody knife-slashing homicides, and all the justice that money can buy.”
Because of the trial, soap operas lost a significant amount of their audiences. The murder trial went on for 11 months from November 9, 1994, to October 3, 1995. They never were able to fully rebound as reality television became the next big thing.
O.J. Simpson is survived by four children: Arnelle and Jason, from his first marriage, and Sydney and Justin, from his marriage to Nicole Brown Simpson.
