47th Annual Daytime Emmys Draws Over 3 Million Viewers For CBS Telecast with Return to Network TV

Photos: CBS

Friday night was a good night for daytime!  With its first foray back on to network television since 2011, the Daytime Emmy kudofest, while for the first time held this year virtually, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, scored very well in its timeslot.

The CBS broadcast averaged 3.1 million total viewers and a 0.3 demo rating.  That is way up from the last time viewers saw the award show on TV when it was on cable network POP TV back in 2015 with just over 900,000 viewers for its initial broadcast.

According to TV Insider report: The first hour of the Emmys garnered 3.3 million viewers to top the hour by edging out a rerun on ABC”s Shark Tank, and then slipped to second place for the second hour with 2.8 million viewers.

These were strong numbers for Friday night, and hopefully CBS and the other major networks will now continue this, and serve up the Daytime Emmy Awards moving forward.

The ladies of CBS’s The Talk hosted the event; each virtually from their homes, in an event filled with at-home acceptance speeches and presenters, and clip packages. The show was produced by NATAS and Associated Television International

It was great to see the Daytime Emmys televised. Hoping next year we can see all the glamour again. Seeing Susan Lucci makes me miss All My Children so much!

I was so happy to see it on network TV. Also happy it didn’t run overtime but I did miss seeing actors on the red carpet. Maybe next year.

I’m so pleased that the show came back to network television, even though it had to be virtual this year. I’ve really missed seeing it the last few years; and hope it will continue to be broadcast going forward.

It was cheap. it was weird. At times entertaining. At times thoughtful. At other times boring. I still watched the entire show but never fully warmed to the format. If it’s televised again will I watch. Yep.

What did you expect with the problems we’re facing with the COVID-19? Did you even think about that?

Just so happy it was back on broadcast networks again. (Thank You, CBS!)

I thought the show was put together well given the circumstances.

Here’s to next year!

I finally got around to watching the Emmys tonight, 2 nights after the fact, and it was…OK.

Nothing can compare to a live show, and obviously none of this show was done live. Everything was pre-recorded and edited together to create the final product. That did make things run smoothly, and there was none of the constant “over-talking” that happens on all the live Zoom shows. However, the hostesses oddly did not congratulate the winners by name, because when they taped their segments they didn’t know. And it was weird that the hostesses didn’t talk to each other at all.

It was fun to see some clips from previous shows, but that emphasized even more how much I missed the live shows.

All in all, I’m glad they had a show on broadcast TV, and hopefully the ratings will allow it to come back next year when it can be Exciting! again!!

I recorded and fast forwarded through segments I didn’t like. I was glad to see it back on TV.

The only reason they got these numbers was probably because of the coronavirus. More people then ever are home with nothing to do during the day then watch daytime tv. I wouldn’t expect similar numbers next year unless the coronavirus is still around…

Heck I wasn’t aware it was being televised or I would of tuned in. This is what happens when it’s not advertising, commercialized, or notified. Nobody knows nothing just from internet. Of course since they have taken most daytime soap off network and the Covid-19 messing with our programs, I have switch to antenna tv. cancelled cable.

Kudos to CBS for doing a great job despite COVID in bringing a virtual showing during prime-time to recognize daytime. CBS certainly took the night with the top awards. Next year should be even better. Thanks again CBS! But ratings would have been higher with better advertising.

Hope Covid is gone next year and the Daytime Emmys will again be broadcast on Network Tv. Frankly, the virtual version was disappointing. I watch to see my soap stars and all the celebrities in attendance. This was all hosts all the time. Except for a few presenters only the winners were seen. I had to work so I recorded it and fast forwarded through it. Thanks for the effort but I hope this is the last time this format is needed.

‘The Talk’ Renewed For 15th and Final Season to End in December; Does Its Cancellation Make Room for ‘The Gates’?

Things just got very interesting over at CBS daytime with the announcement today that The Talk is going to end its run on the network after its 15th season, and that season looks to be shortened as the series will come to its conclusion in December of 2024.

In a joint statement, Amy Reisenbach, President, CBS Entertainment and David Stapf, President, CBS Studio, shared, “The Talk broke new ground when it launched 14 years ago by returning daytime talk to CBS with a refreshing and award-winning format. Throughout the years, it has been a key program on CBS’ top rated daytime line-up as it brought timely, important and entertaining topics and discussions into living rooms around the globe.”

Reisenback and Stapf added, “It goes without saying that hosting and producing a year-round talk show is no easy task, and we express our sincere gratitude to our amazing hosts Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell and Sheryl Underwood, our Executive Producer/Showrunner Rob Crabbe and the hardworking producing team and crew.

Giving props to those who co-hosted or worked on the show through the years including: Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen Moonves, Carrie Ann Inaba Leah Ramimi, Marissa Janet Winokur, Holly Robinson Peete, Eve, Aisha Tyler, and Sharon Osbourne, the joint statement added, “We also want to acknowledge our former show hosts and colleagues who contributed throughout the seasons. We truly appreciate the skill, creativity, and dedication everyone involved brought to the show every day.  And of course, we thank the numerous guests who appeared, and the millions of viewers who tuned in daily. For the final season, we plan to celebrate the show and give it the proper sendoff it deserves when it concludes in December 2024.”

While no firm decision or announcement has been given at this time, it seems most likely that The Talk’s time slot could be given to the new soap opera in development The Gates from CBS Studio Ventures and from longtime soap opera writer. Michele Val Jean.  As previously reported, The Gates features the lives of a wealthy Black family who reside in a posh, gated community.

The Talk was originally the brainchild of Sara Gilbert, who had developed the show when it launched back 2010 and it replaced the beloved As the World Turns which went off the air after 54 years when CBS canceled it.

So, what do you think of The Talk being canceled? Will this make room for The Gates to begin to air in its spot beginning in 2025? Share your reactions to the news via the comment section.
