ABC Daytime Prez, Brian Frons interviewed on Why he canceled AMC & OLTL!

While Brian Frons, the President of ABC Daytime joked that he “pre-entered the witness protection program prior to today’s events”, the decision maker who just made daytime history by “killing” One Life to Live and All My Children in the same day, spoke exclusively to Deadline.com on his why the decision to ax both soaps at this time.   Here are a few excerpts!

Frons stated to journalist, Nellie Andreeva: “A year ago, we started to look at our projections where the ratings for the soaps would go,” he said. When those projections came in pretty discouraging, the network began to aggressively develop replacement shows, 15 of them. Four of the 15 were picked up to pilot: The Chew, The Revolution and two others, a talk show and a dating show. Originally, the idea was to cancel only one daytime drama. But “the way the ratings developed and  the pilots turned out, the ratings developed negatively and pilots developed positively, so we decided to make a bigger shift. The call to go ahead with canceling a daytime soap was made a couple of weeks ago, while the final decision to axe both AMC and OLTL was made within the past week. I wanted to do shows that were unusual for daytime. What’s happening now is people are looking for information to make their lives better, they’re obsessed about what they eat and they’re obsessed with weight. It probably doesn’t hurt that the new shows are also much cheaper to produce than the two soaps they are replacing.”

Apparently, Frons informed Deadline.com, that there was a brief discussion about a year ago to combine the two soaps into one, bringing together some of the best characters from both series, but that did not occur.  Now with GH soon to be the only ABC soap, don’t expect AMC’s Erica Kane to come into GH.  Frons noted, “It’s hard to envision Erica anywhere else but Pine Valley.”

So what do you think about Frons’ rationale for replacing OLTL and AMC? Let us know!

He should be axed from his job.

the man needs to rot in a really hot place.. how evil is he.. he up rooted amc and took it to California. knowing he was going to cancel it. we dont want another cooking show. we dont need another fat people show. And as for classing abc soaps with Y&R. we are abc not them…

There are celebs out there who follow the soaps. And i just have to say to the fans if Frons thinks times are hard.. wait to the fans boycott Disney and abc. by not buying any of their products. Not buying from sponsors who advertise with them . You Mr.Frons need to be fired.. and that needs to be now… maybe oprah or the donald can step in and help. Maybe another net work will pick up the shows and i hope you suck eggs when it happens.

Anne Sweeney, head of ABC daytime needs to go as well, she is Frons’ puppydog.

soaps is everyday life and how dare you take away something that has being around for years some of us look to watch soaps on our days of from work or when we are cleaning house TV will not be the same we have enough TV talk shows and programs where you can learn to eat from don’t do this find a way to save both shows

This has really been a very sad sad thing for ABC to do! As most people have done I grew up on AMC. I look forward to it at the end of everyday. The show is like family and they are friends to each other and some even become family. I think the amount of notice you have given both soaps is WRONG! The amount of time these people have given to us to give them only 6months and a year to find new jobs is totally unfair! I hope that rumor that Oprah may pick up these shows would be wonderful and a Godsend!

Thank you for all the memories!

Nadine Laxen

Forget it, sadly to say, NO ONE will pick these shows up. We heard that same song sung when GL & ATWT were cacelled. All that is, is false hope…

soap net should pick them up maybe

Soapnet is going to be off real soon as well, so there’s no point there in trying that.

Soapnet is owned by ABC/Disney as well.

ABC/DISNEY needs to fire Brian Frons, not only has he ruined the stellar reputation that Agnes Nixon and the producers of AMC and OLTL , but also the reputation of Disney – a company that is supposed to be about family, friends and all positive things – how will they explain the jobs (actors, writers, directors, make up, hair, crew , production crew, post production crew, editors, extras – all together thousands of people out of work).

how can ABC/Disney save money by cancelling both shows when both shows have multiple year contracts for dozens of actors and producers – that will still have to paid – even though there is no job for them – they get paid until their contracts expire – how stupid is Brian ? better yet – how stupid of ABC to keep him there ? He has ruined ABC Daytime – the only show worth watching is THE VIEW and now it too should be boycotted –ALL DAYTIME AT ABC should be boycotted -period until Brian Frons is fired !

If the shows were doing so bad, his job should have been to replace producers and writers the minute he thought the shows were in trouble – you cannot attract viewers if you continue to let the show hurt with some bad story lines.

God bless Gloria Monty – I wish she were alive – she could have saved both shows like she saved GENERAL HOSPITAL back in the ’70’s when ABC was threatening to cancel GH.

I wish Capital Cities would have never sold to Disney – Disney and Frons are like cancer ——

FIRE BRIAN FRONS – and his lover on the low – JILL FAREN PHELPS – THATS THE ONLY REASON GH IS STILL ON THE AIR.

ICAM……what took him so long to get rid of Charlie Pratt? I couldn’t bear to watch AMC while he was destroying it!

I think EVERYTHING Disney should be boycotted.

Brian Frons should be fired.. He has made a mess of daytime programming…Pres. of daytime ABC for 5years already.. That’s 5 years toooooooo long.. He has ruined everything……Time fo him to go…He has done an wful JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cancelling OLTL & AMC…The Chew ratings are down to ral low 1.2…………Give me a break & cancel this right away…(GARBAGE) The same for THE REVOLUTION………No one want’s to watch these shows…….NOT INTERESTED in a cooking show 7 talk show..So many of these kind of shows on already!! The Chew lasted a about a month & already ratings are down!!!!!!People are not interested in these STUPID SHOW”S.. We want the soap’s not this crap… Yes, Brian Frons should BE FIRED NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOAP OPERA FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who watched these pilots & what audience claims they want new shows?
ABC is in for a shock – its all downhill if they take the soaps of the air. Poor business decision.
I will never watch ABC again…I am switching now for the evening news and will only watch AMC & OLTL .
He should be fired just for contemplating this & when ABC does poorly it should be his job on the line.

Brian Frons should be fired………….He is wrecking ABC daytime programming…And he has a direspectful mouth about people being overweight..That they are not attractive…Commment about Marcy on OLTL this was about her and many more of those kind of comments…He is doing an terrible job………..

I can’t believe he would do this!!! If we wanted to watch a cooking show, we would go to a cooking channel!! They have sports channel for the guys, cartoon network for the kids, At least let us keep the soap network for us!!! Don’t take them away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think canceling the soaps was evil and go to abc and watch young and restless and bold and beautiful they are good i refuse to watch cbs up yours brian and ann

FRONS NEEDS TO RETIRE!

I think brian is an idiot and will always have a bad taste in our mouths.he killed many people from their daily lifes and ripped jobs from people.he should be ashamed of himself and not be able to sleep at night knowing what he did.know we will not let you rest for a long time.we will be with our soap actors till its over maybe oprah will pick them up since she is a better woman and business person then you.hope never to see you cause you are hated right now thats putting tit mild.have a miserable day.

and if he doesn’t want to go HE NEEDS THE BOOT!

Idiot.

I am not a AMC or One life fan- but I am sorry for thier fans. I am a huge GH fan and am glad that it will be continuing.

not for long sweetie . you are not reading between the lines… They have no money…Tyler Christopher was let go.. no pay cut – because they cant afford to pay him.. maybe before he paid Vanessa marcel all that money to come back and did all that Crazy advertising to announce her return-he should of just hired writers and not used the actors as props to other actors. He ruined the shows on purpose.. he had an agenda all along . He is trying to make the show tank…

I am sure they are going to be saving a pretty penny on Susan Luci’s salary.

I haven’t watched either soap in a few years, but I’m devastated at this news. I watched ATWT and GL on CBS religiously my entire life, so I know how the fans of AMC and OLTL feel right now. I;m both sad and angry at the state of entertainment today. These guys like Frons and Les Moonves need to be fired and then horsewhipped.

I was a GL watcher and especially an ATWT watcher.I still miss my show so i do feel sad for the AMC and OLTL watchers.it really is a sad state of affairs that we have to have more talk shows , cooking shows, and reality shows,.i have nothing against these shows but come on….it will be the same old ,same old!

Don’t get too comfortable with GH it will be the next to go that is a fact…

its slated to cancel in sept 2012. someone in frons office let that one slip….they were going to make annoucement in feb i guess after oltl was gone for a month… you know if we cant stop this… i guess he really will need witness protection..because the fans are going nuts… and

Brian Frons is a prick. period.

Thank you Brian Frons for telling me what I am obsessed with. I was ACTUALLY obsessed with OLTL, but hey, what do I know?

LOL, Soapy! Yeah, Frons ALWAYS has his Boot on the pulse of the American viewing public! YUPPERS, You, I, and the rest of the millions of fans that don’t get correctly counted because Neilsen Ratings are so flawed, obviously don’t realize what we REALLY want is more CRAPPY REALITY SHOWS that FRONS thinks are WONDERFUL!!! So glad we were finally told what we really want by someone as brilliant as FRONS! FIRE HIS ASS, ABC!!!!!

He’s so full of crap that I think he almost believes this crap he told Fairman!

I hate the idea of these two soaps going away. I won’t be watching the replacement shows. I simply won’t watch any TV during these two times lots.

The whole thing stinks its disgracefull and I have just about had it up to here with frons someone needs to fire him buit now plz

Stupid Excuse.. Those new shows will be canceled faster than they got picked up.

Let’s hope so my brother.

I have watched the show for half my life (13 years) I’m so pissed this did this. This is the only show that is worth watching. I come home from work and leave my life behind for a half hour as I watch the residents of Pine Valley..

Mr. Frons: ABC supporters have e-mailed and called you, and you have ignored your network’s bread and butter, who are the fans. Now I, for one, and I hope other fans will follow suit and ignore you and your ridiculous reality shows that will criminally replace OLTL and AMC. Disney/ABC: I am through with you, for life. Good riddance.

good one

While I am sure Frons and his staff could ultimately care less what we ABC Soap fans say or want, as it is all only about the $$$$ (which I get to a degree), if we all stay true to our word and honestly not watch ABC programming day or night, that will be one huge chunk of TV Viewership gone, and cheaper programming or not, they will feel the huge loss for sure. The only hour of the entire day and evening that ABC will have my patronage will be to watch General Hospital. Now I watch many evening ABC shows, that I will no longer care to continue watching. Clearly, the powers that be think that we ABC soap fans are just upset “for now”, but believe me, after watching all three of these wonderful ABC soaps with very talented actors and actresses for the last 30 plus years, my mind WILL NOT change. Other than tivoing General Hospital, I am finished with ABC for good. I am so sorry to see this terrific genre slowly going off into the sunset – very sad. The three hours a day of soap viewing (actually tivoing and watching on the weekend) was my escape from the daily grind, and watching a talk show would never provide that same escape. I wish all of ther soap stars and crew much success in their future endeavors, and I hope to see them all crop up on TV again!

brian frons-when are you having the broomstick removed from your rearend?

you know nothing of the real world.

Everything Brian Frons says is BS. The cancelation of all three soaps was something he planned at beginning of his tenure at ABC. Canceling 2 major soaps in one day is a little too convenient and suspect for my liking. Why lie to casts and crews of both AMC and OLTL. Casts and crews of both shows are clearly and unfairly out of jobs. What about their families? In this industry, no one know when or where your next job opportunity is coming from. Not fair to either cast and crew to leave them tied a show that you already know is getting canceled. Bad move by Frons and ABC.

He’s been working on killing soap viewership for years! He’s been told what we want for as long as he’s been there, but he has never once listened to Soap fans. Worse, the parent company has never questioned his motives or what kind of feedback he’s getting. And now he’s screwed with hundreds of people who have worked their butts off for ABC and Disney for YEARS! And he’s going to take down a couple magazines and many people who worked for the publishing houses, because there won’t be enough work for them.
If they don’t retract this decision, I won’t be watching anything on ABC Daytime and only one hour a week at night (Castle).

You could probably watch Castle on Hulu, online or DVD…

Here’s where the problem lies: most of you aren’t committed to do a real boycott, which means NOTHING of ABC or Disney. Instead, you say, “Well, I’ll still watch Castle”. Whether that watching is online or on Hulu, ABC and Disney still benefit. If you’re not committed to boycotting EVERYTHING, then the boycott will have no effect.

Mr. Frons’ myopic perception of the situation is disheartening. He stated that he wanted something “unusual” for daytime. Well, One Life To Live has historically been one of the most entertaining, educational television programs on television.

OLTL has adopted a lead role in catapulting relevant social situations and ideas to the forefront of American awareness. Topics such as homosexuality, bullying, abortion, multiple personalities, suicide, addiction and countless others have been portrayed in extremely winning, enlightening fashion.

This is what American viewers need … not another reality show or self-help program designed to heighten our personal anxieties. Mr. Frons, you really BLANKED the pooch.

RD
30 year veteran of One Life To Live

Yes I totally agree with you. I have been watching the soaps for over 30 years. When I’m not home …I record. I do like the fact that it does touch on real life situations. True that the moral values like being married before intercourse has been tossed out the window…However, It’s real life.

Frons set out to kill daytime and put “junk” programing on the air which is cheaper – makes him look good. The man should have been fired years ago, he obviously has something on someone.

A jackass decision!! Brian Frons has never been a friend to the daytime soaps and I truly believe this was always his plan. I am through with his daytime lineup.

You’re totally right, Lew! Anyone who believes Frons sincerely tried to save soaps is kidding themselves. He has never understood Soaps, the people who watch them, or why we like them. He tried to make them what he thought they should be, and as soon as he did, they started struggling and failing. He hates what we love and he seems to think that he can make us like his crappy programming, if he keeps telling the same lies over and over again. He should have been fired years ago, but he must have something really bad on somebody to keep his job this long!

Michael, the only interview I ever want to read about Brian Frons after this is the transcripts of his exit interview from ABC. He has been poison ever since he took the helm, and he, not the incredible people who put on OLTL and AMC, should be losing his job.

Ditto!

I think that the decision sucks – big time. He is destroying American TV history for nothing. No one is going to watch those crappy daytime reality shows. Honestly, we don’t watch them at night, because we hate them. Many of us, who have to work to survive, tape the daytime soaps, while at work, to watch at night in place of the idiotic nighttime tv waste presently available. This is such a stupid, stupid move.

I think you are so right! We don’t watch this garbage during the night and we do record the soaps during the day. Be Blessed

Brian Frons has never had any respect for the soap opera audience…stating that he would train us to like what he liked. I am not surprised the soaps were cancelled, but that does change my disgust. I don’t appreciate being manipulated. ABCD just lost me as viewer.

Well said.

Well, I have recently decided to No Longer watch much TV. I still watch The Young and the Restless, but then I shut it off. I never watch ABC at all. I used to watch All My Children when my daughter still lived home, but haven’t in over 8 years. I find it sad though that Soaps are going down the tubes. There is way too much junk on TV today…too much reality. I enjoy Drama, and Sitcoms. I am glad to have much enjoyment online to replace TV!

Mr. Fron all i know you are sooooooooo stupid, people need to watch some thing that gives them a time away from reality, and now you cancel the best soaps ever and replace it with reality shows,oh well you lost me as a viewer and i think yyou and les moonves should both get tied up and trown to the river, people like you make me sick

I think he is an absolute jerk!!! After having these soaps that have gone from one generation to another it is an outrage. Who the heck is obsessed with their weight and what they eat? whitey? I know we aren’t. There are more than enough shows to talk about peoples weight and what they eat. This is why we have wonderful people with professions that can actually help people with their situations individually! hummm I think they are called DOCTORS. You can actually schedule an appointment with a NUTRITIONIST that can teach and train you for your need. You have Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Maury etc, etc to teach all this. Do we need more? Heck NO!!! Are you thinking about your audience… I don’t think so. If you did you would consider ALL the elderly that look forward to watching these soaps as well as the rest of us. Once again, I say… your a Jerk to put it nicely.

I agree and I am 1 of the elderly who looks forward to watching these shows every day. If he wants to put these shows on , put them on TNT,TBS,A&E but do not take our soaps away.

why is it that I make a comment and you come back with a rewrite of what I supposedly said and then write at the bottom “do not reply to this.” I don’t think that TNT, TBS, OR A&E need any junk on their networks. They have pretty good programs. They don’t need crap. You could clean up all the comments you want to but, it does not include the proper attitudes we as a people do want to get across. Our expressions to what the JERK is doing, is what we feel!

I watched these shows with my Gransmother, God rest her soul, and have fondest memories of these times.Thank You Frons for taking these memories away from others. WE, the viewers, the PEOPLE that pay your revene through purchasing from your sponsors are not happy. Maybe boycotting your sponsors will show them what we think of your poor decision making process. It appears that you forget to look at the consequeses. Sadly, you have shown that you do not respect the viewers of these 2 shows or have a clue what your viewers want. You have lost another viewer. Kudos on slowly bringing ABC to it’s knees.

Another reason to cancel my cable subscription….. This sucks….

What an idiot…..been watching OLTL and AMC since I was 12 – the same year AMC came on the air.

It’s the same old song and dance…lets SAVE money and cancel an expensive to produce show and put on in it’s place more of the same drivel we can get on The Dr’s or one of the other shows of that nature.

I know there’s a petition out there to save OLTL….but from what I’ve seen of shows on other networks is, it wont make a bit of difference.

What WILL impact them is to start watching, from here on out, both shows online…..hit them in their pocketbook….cuz make no mistake they need the ad revenue now more than ever, because when the new shows start no one will be watching or recording for later…they’ll all be recording the same shows they always have.

Sadly, Brian Frons will keep his job until the network falls to last in the ratings war for daytime TV.

Our HOPE might be in finding way for cable networks to pick both these soaps up and keep them alive for their viewing faithful.

I hope Billy Clyde Tuggle, Ray Gardner and Creed Kelly meet Mr. Frons in a dark alley!!!!

LOL, I hope they get him too!!!!

and Jamie Sanders, Mitch Laurence, Carlo Hesser & Ivan Kipling too!!

Especially Mitch Laurence LOL

they all need th give him a slow painful death

dont forget eli clark he needs to meet frons the hater.

What a shame. I started watching soaps with my mother when I came home from school many years ago. My kids watched them with me. If they take away General Hospital, that will be it for me and many others. How many talk shows can we take. I don’t need anymore ADVISE. Just great stories to take you away on a little trip for a while each day.

Once I read that SoapNet would be off the air next year, and there are different platforms to view soaps, I really wondered what was going to happen to AMC and OLTL.

So, the AMC move to LA was for naught. What a waste of time! And was not given enough time to rebound. Sorry for all those actors who relocated.

OLTL, I thought was in better shape, obviously not with the best, recent storylines. But let me add the KISH storlyline was ABORTED, probably by Fron. I felt betrayed and cheated when an honest story was pulled from underneath us. So in short, the handwriting has been on the wall for sometime. If we write in (which some recently did), does it go anywhere other than the trash? Instead, we will be forced fed more realty shows; CBS; “The Talk” is awful; so ABC will have three hours of squawking if GH remains in the same timeslot. I will not be watching. Sorry but that continous GH mob storyline has always disturbed me. So Mr. Frons, you made a difficult decsion. I respectfully request you to reconsider your decison.

Can anyone tell me what planet Brian Fronz is living on that he thinks we need MORE cooking and lifestyle shows on T.V. Then again he can well afford the drugs it would take to put him on any planet.

All the unemployment etc. people need to escape for awhile each day and that is what the soaps do for people. Thanks to this idiot we all get a punch in the gut instead.

Ya we can watch a cooking show about a pork or beef roast, stewing beef, asparagus or even ground beef. For the second hour have “specialist” giving design ideas, show size 0 clothes, reasons for therapy and the best thing the FREE “guilt trip” over what we can no longer afford to cook, do or give our family and/or ourselves.

Brian and others on “Mahogany Row” obviously don’ t know their audience or what the words “NEW” and “INTERESTING” mean.

ABC – save the soaps get rid of this jerk Brian. That will be more than enough money to help especially since you got the stars to take a cut in pay in recent years.

Anyone know if there is an actual petition somewhere on line to sign? God willing someone on “Mahogany Row” will pay attention to it and change their minds.

I’m just so mad and can’t stop venting. It is that or throw up. I HATE THIS!!!!!!!!!

Totally understand your fury, Charlotte. 100%. I can’t even say what I really want to say.

Charlotte – Go to the Petitionsite.com or cause.com or Oprah.com. There are petitions at each of these locations. You may also contact to all of them via Facebook. Other FB sites are RallyforAMC&OLTL and SaveAMCfrombeingcancelled. Also, go to Agnes Nixon’s FB page and you can get links to more of these pages. They are literally popping up like sprouts.

This is just ridiculous!!!! This guy needs to be replaced ASAP!!! The Chew???? Hello isn’t that what the food network show!!! It’s not fair to the fans or the actors especially! WHat are they doing to daytime television.Ok so the ratings have decline but most people do work and go to school and that’s where SOAPnet came in!! But now there taking that away I read last year and making an educational channel for kids uhh thats what nickelodeon and disney is for leave our soaps alone its not fair!!!

TESSA I TOTALLY AGREE AND TONS OF PEOPLE ARE PETIONING ON FACEBOOK AS WELL ITS NOT RIGHT AT ALL

The ratings only started declining when Frons and his “agenda” took office. As much as I despise the asshat (frons), this goes much higher than him. It’s ABC/d. I refuse to believe one person had that much control to completely destroy 3 wonderful soaps, and none of the higher ups did anything to stop it. Frons completely destroyed GH for me almost 3years ago. I haven’t watched anything associated with ABC, and they have alot of affiliated stations. I t will all trickle down, and come full circle. I might suggest anyone having stock in ABC pull out, because IMO , this backlash will have consequences.

GH is next and I feel like a friend has passed away. http://www.tinyurl.com/soapsonOWN

Brian Frons should have been fired 5 years ago!!! He doesn’t care about what the viewers want. He only cares about what he wants!

I agree

I am totally disgusted!!!! I have watched these soaps most of my life. My children have started watching as well. I can say without a doubt that I will not be watching ABC if these shows go off the air. I hope the entire network tanks! Shame on you ABC and Disney!!!!!

Agreed

DISNEY hasn’t cared about families for years! FRONS is their darling. It’s going to take work, but I should be able to cut Disney and it’s sponsors from my life in retaliation for this stupid ass move. I hope they tank. I hope NBC picks up Castle.

BTW – Where would shows like Castle be without Nathan Fillion fans from OLTL tuning in the watch in the beginning? Where would the careers of Josh Duhmael, Vanessa Marcil, Kelly Ripa, Judith Light, etc. etc. etc. be if they had not had the opportunity to attract viewers through AMC, OLTL and GH? How much work for GMA has Cameron Mathison done lately? If he had not been an AMC staple, they could not have cast him so well on DWTS. Think of the loyal Kelly Monaco fans who made DWTS a hit it’s first year. If Frons would only think of the cross casting opportunites, he could make Daytime and Primetime huge hits.

Everything has a cycle and we have been here before. The great new programming that will be provided by Mr. Frons will crash and burn and hopefully it will make the executives at Disney see that the problem is with their head of daytime programming. GH shouldn’t feel to safe, because it will be the last soap on ABC and we know how Mr. Frons feels about them.

ATTENTION!! BRIAN FRONS WHY CAN’T YOU, INSTEAD OF SHOWING DISNEY CARTOONS 24 HRS A DAY(WHAT KID IS UP AT 2AM?) ON SOAPNET LEAVE THE SOAPS ON SOAPNET.THIS WAY THE SUITS ARE HAPPY AND THE VIEWER’S ARE HAPPY OR IS THAT NOT MAKING YOU ENOUGH MONEY?? TAKE A LOOK AT FACEBOOK READ THE COMMENTS ON AMC AND OLTL.SEE HOW MANY VIEWER’S ARE MAD AS HELL.PLEASE TAKE A LOOK DO WE THE VIEWER’S MEAN ANYTHING AT ALL TO YOU OR ABC

BECAUSE HE DOESN’T CARE WHAT YOU THINK, THERESA! Not one bit! YOU/WE didn’t get trained, and now YOU/WE must be made to see the error of your/our ways. You will now be forced to watch what he tells you to watch and like it. NO, VIEWER OPINION DOESN’T COUNT!!!! IT’S THE $$$$$ you silly, stupid, ignorant, uncultured viewer who doesn’t know the value of Reality and Cooking Shows! GET IT????

I signed every petition so far. Posted on every FB and will continue to protest your VERY POOR decision..I will never watch ABC again.! This was performed with out and feelings for the faithful viewers! We will probably need 5 YEARS notice, ATLEAST! Before you end our LIVES! Shame on you!!!

He is delusional and really had no idea what he is doing!!

shame on Frons, I will NOT be watching any programming on ABC when my soaps go away! How dare he have such little respect for an AMERICAN Institution! Our soaps mean the world to us. Daytime programming will crash and burn after this idiotic move. Mr. Fronz you are not listening to the soapfans! we don’t want talk or food shows! we want our soaps!

This man should be fired…..witness protection is the least of his worries…….boycott this bs…..but this jerk on notices…..the chew…really sounds like a bubblegum ad………..dont need a cooking show……….what a loser he is

Brian Frons is a snake! He knew when he moved AMC from New York to LA that axing it was next. If I wanted to watch another food show I would switch over to cable. An a show about obesity, yeah right that sounds real appealing!! I’m 100% on board with boycotting all sponsors of the show as well as ABC. I hope you read this Brian Frons; your tiny brain has no clue what the viewing public wants or needs. You are an idiot!!!

I cant believe this news so sad this is all we need another talk/cooking show I thought that was why we have food network? When soaps have been on since tv started this is like one of the family dying away Something has to be done here please stop this nonsence NOW!

WHAT I THINK HE IS FULL OF CRAP NOBODY IS GOING TO WATCH THOSE STUPID SHOWS HE REALLY NEEDS TO RETHINK THIS OR TURN OVER THE REINS TO SOMEBODY THAT CARES MORE ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND THE FANS INSTEAD OF MONEY HELL ALL THOSE PRIMETIME SHOWS ARE COSTING ABC A HECK OF ALOT MORE THEN ALL OUR SOAPS PUT TOGETHER SO I AM ASKING YOU TO PLEASE DONT TAKE OUR ONLY TRUE WORTH WATCHING SHOWS AWAY AMC AND OLTL IS OUR HEARTS AND SOULS WE DONT NEED THOSE OTHER STUPID SHOWS THERES WAY TO MANY OF THEM ON ALREADY AND VERY FEW SOAPS FOR US LOYAL SOAP FANS PLEASE LEAVE THEM ALONE

Blah, Blah, Blah……..Mr. Frons has caused an uproar! And I’m sure the fans will follow through with complaining/boycotting ABC and Disney!!! Good Bless General Hospital for not being axed, but AMC & OLTL have been my TV staples since they were in black and white….yes, that far back! I love these people and these shows!! I want them to STAY!! I will NOT watch the stupid replacements that Mr. Frons thinks is so good! We’ll show ’em! SAVE OUR SOAPS!!!

Such a sad sad day. This guy is crazy if he thinks this long time viewer of AMC and OLTL will tune into his new shows. I will leave ABC no more watching Regis, View, The Doctors, Good Morning America. I am DONE!!!! Please reverse this decision.

Tina – FYI, the Doctors and Regis are syndicated shows that air on different networks in different cities. Here, Regis airs on FOX & the Doctors air on NBC. Perhaps you should contact both shows and tell them they are going to lose viewers in your city because soap fans are boycotting all ABC affiliates. That might start a small fire under the network bigwigs.

I am a stay-home-mom who also works part time from my home. My toddlers will most likely love the new Disney Junior, but I don’t see why ABC couldn’t have found a better way to broadcast it than cancelling SoapnNet, which is unique and the ultimate home of soap lovers (and there are still many!). As if this wasn’t already a big enough disappointment, now cancelling AMC and OLTL!! This is a major setback to the soap world in general. I am aware that there is a “stigma” that goes along with viewing soap operas, that they are for women who have nothing better to do with their time than watch overdramatized fluff, they are full of B actors, etc. But that is not true! I went to school and worked for more than ten years until I became primarily a stay-at-home-mom 3 years ago at the age of 29. I was an avid soap viewer the entire time, thanks to SoapNet. As for cancelling AMC and OLTl, If it had to be one and not the other, I would have chosen to keep OLTL, as I felt David Canary was the best thing AMC had going, but I am still sad to see it go. And as for OLTL, although I do not take the problems of the world around us lightly and feel very thankful for my life and its abundance, and am aware that any form of entertainment is only a luxury, I have to say I will “mourn” the loss of this wonderful, enlightening, groundbreaking show. OLTL and its characters and actors have their own place in my heart.
As for the new shows, I don’t think they will turn out to be the great success stories that Brian Frons believes. There are too many shows like these. And they will never replicate The View. CBS has tried to do so, unsuccessfully. I hope the decision was based on other things, like budget, etc. and not just on the launch of these new shows.
I know I am just one person, but I don’t see myself tuning in to either of these if I happen to have free time during the afternoon.
I will agree that the faces of television and the entertainment industry are changing, but not necessarily for the better. A lot more shows are introduced and a lot more fail these days. Sometimes new is not better. Soap operas have been around for a long time and I say leave them alone. Soap fans are loyal and lot of them won’t watch the new shows out of spite. I had held out hope that someone would buy SoapNet or start a new network of the same sort. But now that the soap world has lost two more shows, I guess that is not likely. Surely there is a better solution. Why couldn’t they take the shows on hiatus for a while to save money? Or, cut the new shows back a few days a week? I would love to give Brian Frons a piece of my mind, but as that is not likely to happen, nor is he likely to care, I will just hope the failure of his new line-up results quickly in his dismissal from ABC.

i cannot understand how Frons can say the storylines weren’t relevant. Especially with OLTL – it constantly, and consistently – received praise from the media re: the subject matter and storylines it tackled. Both AMC and OLTL were also consistently lauded for the diverse casting choices. It’s not only the actors who will be out of work, it’s the local crew people, the writers, the makeup/wardrobe people – and let’s not forget the trickle-down effect this is creating on published media. ABC Soaps in Depth can’t report on only one soap. The other soap mags will probably reduce their staffs as well since there will be 2 less soaps to report on.

I stopped watching The View 2 years ago because I couldn’t stand the nonsensical squawking and constant arguing. Those women lost credibility a long time ago (when they were barely credible to begin with). More “lifestyle” shows? There’s a cable channel for everything now – the last thing “people want” are more lifestyle shows!

I don’t know about the rest of the nation, but where I live, Oprah is also on ABC. So not only is Frons pulling the plug on 2 consistent-viewing shows, but the Oprah show will be off the air here in May. So that’s a 3-hour block of time for ABC to fill with….”lifestyle” shows?!?

And yes, I agree with the ongoing sentiment that GH probably isn’t too far behind. Maybe not within the near timeframe, but there will probably be an announcement some time next year.

It’s a sad day – and an impactful one – even the national news had the double cancelations as a headline.

The storylines weren’t relevant? People are more interested in their health that storylines that were not relevant? Who the heck wrote the storylines and approved them? ABC and Brian Frons!! If AMC and OLTL were no longer relevant to the viewers, look in the mirror ABC. Who’s fault is that? Stop blaming the viewers.

If ABC wanted to keep these soaps and increase ratings, they could have done a much better job with them..instead the ran them into the ground with horrible writers, propping their favorites (no matter what the audience wanted) and telling stories that made little sense and showed NO respect for the history of the characters or show.

Instead Brian Frons uses the viewers as a scapegoat for his failings – or maybe this was the plan all along. It’s staggering to me that Brian Frons still has a job unless ABC wanted him to do this all along.

Well I have already given up ABC news and GMA and barely watch anything on ABC at all. It won’t be too much of a stretch to give up the rest.

This news is horrendous. Brian Frons had this in the wind and his mind long ago. I think he was waiting for the right time according to him to shut these fine soaps down. He is everything all you fans have been saying. I do feel sorry for all the people From AMC who picked up and moved so they could save their jobs. Relocating their entire families. They made the ultimate sacrifice. Now, where do they go. They are all in limbo. OLTL has the finest actors and writers In daytime soaps. I feel terrible about all these people. Some of them may never find new jobs.OLTL has really had the best stories and outstanding subjects that should appeal to everyone. This story about bullying is so important. Many families have been affected with their children suffering and feeling they can’t tell anyone. I say Bravo to the writers for always tackling difficult subject matter. For all the fans I say ,we should be grateful we had these soaps to put in our memory books.

Mr. Frons is a pompous network bully who cares less about the American public he was hired to entertain. He has wanted to get rid of the Daytime Drama since day one often allowing poor writing to destroy the history and credibility of both of these Iconic shows. Mr. Frons does not realize the soap fans are still out there… even tho some of stopped watching they will speak up and voice an opinion. People will have the final say when ABC slips further down in the ratings. This did not happen with Guiding Light or As the World Turns since that initial audience had died off… These two soaps belonged to the baby boomers who are still around. Both at the same time is ballsy even for a bully like Frons. IM sure ABC will regret the decision and the powers that be over Mr. Frons will not be pleased. I for one will no longer watch the ABC network. It means that much… its the principle of the thing and the disrespect for the viewer that insults me. No more View.. No more Regis…. No more Erica Kane… No more Oprah… ABC daytime will crumble and I will watch it fall with glee.

John – don’t punish Regis. His show is syndicated and might air on your local ABC affiliate, but he is on my FOX station. There are connections because he airs on the ABC affiliatein NY, but not everywhere.

Yes I know but he is employed by ABC…. and hes leaving the show which is what i meant no more regis… Like Oprah… She is on ABC here in NY as well…. the ABC network in NY is losing AMC OLTL OPRAH and REGIS
I however have joined the ABC boycott in support of the masses…

ABC is losing me as a viewer when this happens. I am done with them. Boycotting!!! Here this advertisers, lots of people will not be seeing your ads if they are running on ABC, because we are tossing the network like a bad habit, if they go through with this.

YOU ARE A MURDERER AND AN IDIOT AND I HOPE THIS BLOW UP IN YOUR FACE!!!

The VIEW is a bunch of neurotic sex starved uneducated narrow minded liberal assholes who needs more of that!!! Hell with ABC and FRONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

Carol Burnett Talks About Being a Superfan of ‘All My Children’ on ‘Live with Kelly and Mark’

In a heartfelt reunion, of sorts, the one and only Carol Burnett appeared on Monday March 25th episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.

Burnett had first met Kelly Ripa (Hayley) and Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo) back when they all appeared on All My Children together. Carol played Verla Grubbs first in 1983 and then again in the 90’s.

Host Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, AMC) noted to Burnett that “we go back a long time”. She also described Burnett’s character of Verla Grubbs, “extraordinary in every way.”

Carol’s love for All My Children is well-documented, hence legendary soap creator, Agnes Nixon, created the role of Verla for Burnett.

Speaking on how her passion for All My Children began, Carol told Kelly and Mark, “It started with my kids. They would watch at noon. I said, ‘What are you guys doing?’ I sat down and I started to watch and I got hooked!”

When Carol’s family decided to travel through Europe during one summer, the comedic legend recalled thinking, “How am I going to last if I don’t know what’s going on in Pine Valley?” She revealed she had a friend, “who sent me a telegram to the (different hotels) on Fridays to bring me up to date.”

In a hilarious moment from the segment, Carol recalled receiving a late night telegram while in Lake Cuomo when there was a knock at her hotel room door from the hotel manager who was shaking.

Carol related what it said, “Erica is still in a coma. Mark slipped again and ran away from rehab.” As Kelly and Mark broke into laughter, Burnett continued, “Chuck has learned that Donna is carrying his baby, who was once a hooker.”

Check out Carol explaining how she became an AMC Superfan below.

Malachy McCourt, ‘Ryan’s Hope’ and ‘All My Children’ Actor, Dead at 92

If you watched Ryan’s Hope through its 14-year-run, you know that Kevin the bartender became a beloved “member’ of the Ryan clan on the defunct ABC daytime drama series. The character of Kevin MacGuiness became so loved by the fans because of the actor who portrayed him, Malachy McCourt.

Sadly, according to his wife Diana McCourt to The New York Times, Malachy passed away on Monday from a heart condition and battling cancer. The actor was 92-years-old.

Playing Kevin on Ryan’s Hope was not much of a stretch for McCourt, because in his lifetime, he was the owner of 1950s Irish pub Malachy’s on Third Avenue in Manhattan. Known as one of the city’s great story-tellers, patrons from longshoremen to the actor Richard Harris would stop in and talk all things Irish with . On Ryan’s Hope, Kevin was best friends to “Ryan’s Bar” owner, Johnny Ryan (Bernie Barrow) and he tried to keep Delia (Ilene Kristen) on the straight and narrow.

In his soap opera career, McCourt also was widely-known for his role of Father Clarence McCourt on All My Children especially come Christmastime. Was Clarence, actually St. Nick? That was always the proverbial question. McCourt also appeared on the New York soaps: One Life To Live, Search For Tomorrow and Another World. Other roles included: Devil’s Own, Brewster’s Millions, The Molly Maguires, and Starman, to name

Later in 2006, Malachy ran for governor of the state of New York as a Green Party candidate. He tackled social issues of the time including being an advocate for gay and lesbian groups to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

McCourt’s childhood was recounted within his brother Frank McCourt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes, which detailed their mother’s attempt to raise the four of their surviving seven children in poverty in Limerick, Ireland. Later, Malachy wrote his own memoirs: 1998’s Monk Swimming, and 2000’s Singing My Him Song.

Malachy is survived by his aforementioned wife, Diana, daughter Siobhan McCourt; sons Malachy Jr., Conor and Cormac; stepdaughter Nina Galin; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
