ABC President of Entertainment Paul Lee On Daytime Soaps: "Our Focus is On General Hospital! We Are Not Looking to Revive AMC & OLTL!"

This morning at the ABC Summer Press Tour Television Critics Association Panel, ABC President of Entertainment Paul Lee fielded a few questions about the state of soaps on ABC in which he stated, “I started my life (producing) on Brazilian and British soap operas.  I don’t want to overclaim it, but I feel like Revenge, for instance, has really made soaps cool again.  There’s nothing wrong with serialized drama,” he says.

So that begs the question is ABC reconsidering daytime soaps? The Entertainment President says ABC is not looking to revive All My Children or  One Life to Live, and they’re not looking at picking up new scripted daytime shows.  Lee stated, “I think those decisions were made.  Our focus is on General Hospital, and I think Frank Valentini is doing a great job with that, and a lot of his crossovers.  So we like that and are great supporters of it.”

Lee also wanted the audience of journalists to give The Chew some push!  “I think we are very pleased with The Chew.  I don’t know if you are watching that, but it’s got such energy, that show..  And we saw a presentation the other day, and that’s just going to get better and better.  It’s also a huge asset for us as you get into the holiday season and beyond.”

So this fall, its Revenge, General Hospital, and the primetime new series 666 Park Avenue, that will provide the soapy drama from ABC.  What do you think of Lee’s comments? Weigh-in!

I think he’s full of it. If he wanted soapy drama from ABC, then he should have along with the rest of ABC to keep AMC and OLTL on the air, along with GH, and not put these stupid talk shows, cooking shows, and lifestyle shows on the air.

Amen Jason!!

I knew all along they had no intention of bringing back our shows or adding anymore scripted drama to daytime. He is a corporate pig and I do not believe or like him in the least. Ok he said it. Goodbye ABC for good except GH. There are many choices to choose from and ABC is at the bottom.

i think he is dreaming if he thinks that we are going to watch the chew or any of these talk shows cooking shows he is on drugs if he thinks that i am gonna watch this or any of the millions of soap fans…i think he is a stupid as he should resignation right now!

Screw the Chew, Paul Lee and ABC! “ABC is not looking to revive All My Children or One Life to Live”. Then sell the DAMN rights back to Agnes Nixon or to another interested party!!!!! Why is ABC holding on to the rights of OUR soaps?????

YEA HE SAID THE CHEW IS BEING PUSHED -THATS TRUE -PUSHED RIGHT OUT THE DOOR-HE HAS NO IDEA HOW WE FEEL ABOUT OUR SOAPS-AND IF WOULD READ OUR FB REMARKS HE WOULD SEE WE ARE BOYCOTTING ABC/DISNEY AND WE ARE NOT WATCHEN REVENGE -THE CHEW OR ANYTHING ELSE ON THIS NETWORK YES HE IS FULL OF IT FROM HIS HEAD TO HIS SHOES-

I agree nothing can compare to One Live To Live! Screw the Chew! And all your others stupid talks shows they suckl!

I think the man is in his own fantasy land. Soap fans of AMC and OLTL are NOT watching the chew, or gaa or will not watch rikki lake and especially not watch katie couric! In my family (have 2 grown kids with families of their own) we do not watch anything on abc anymore, nothing at all. The only show I watch is GH which I have watched since the beginning.

I am more apt to notify advertisers on any of those shows and also boycott the products that do advertise. Oh, we have all the disney stations blocked on our tv and dvr as well.

This man who wants the journalists to put the push on the junk he recommended needs to just be pushed out the door. The only way to appease some of the loyal soap fans is to give Agnes Nixon back the rights to her shows to do with as she pleases.

Don’t understand why you won’t do this. You have gotten rid of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy to CBS starting in September, so if you are not to revive OLTL and AMC give them back to their creator. If not, well you can just kiss my glass!

Why can’t they get how much they are hated now and can’t be redeemed by putting crap on the air and think we are going to stupidly watch anything because it’s ABC Daytime. That disappeared with OLTL and AMC. Please ABC tank then maybe you’ll give the rights to Agnes and/or all the people who worked so hard and made OLTL a ratings dream. ABC and Disney “It’s a small world after all” because ABC needs to accept how stupid they were to piss off soap fans.Want ratings, simple, bring back our soaps!!!

He’s full of ……. He’s not behind GH, because if that GMAA crap picks up steam, you know that GH will be a gonner!

I don’t trust abc to keep it word about GH. I have a feeling that GoodAfter America is priming it self to take GH place. It would be a sad and bitter day if abc take GH off the air.

If that happens I will never watch abc daytime again!!!!

Good bye anything ABC/disney related. Thankfully, there are alot of channel choices.

I agree! Give back the rights to Agnes Nixon!!!! You are not for GH you are trying to replace it! Don’t think your fooling us cuz we know!!!! You are to please the fans!!!!!

agreed Jason!!

Thats all well and good and our focus will be off of ABC Daytime with the exception of GH.

As I have given these other replacement shows a chance, I am totally disappointed at ABC and it executives. I absolutely agree with you and then some. He, as well as, other top executives at ABC, is obviously, clueless at this point, which is evident in the demise of ABC TV, as to what true soap opera fans really want. It was a very cruel and unappreciative way for the network to show their appreciation and loyalty to all of the millions of soap opera fans who have stuck with them throughout the years, 50+ years, through wars, recessions, elections, discrimination, inflation, etc. and using people like this as their henchmen.

It’s not just about a soap opera being taken off the air, it’s about the relationships that we built with ABC through the soap operas that ABC had so loyally supplied us with up until last year and the ongoing and development of the characters and new characters that have kept us as riveted fans. In a way these soap operas have been a part of my life and my legacy that was handed down to me from my grandmother to her mother, from my mother to me and now from me to my daughter. ABC soaps like All My Children (AMC), and One Life To Live (OLTL) have not only kept me entertained, but if has helped educate me, and probably many others about propriety, tolerance, empathy, and sympathy, which has heighted my awareness of the problems we face in this country, and the world.

Creating or attempting to create a legacy is how viewer loyalty, and branding are formed. I am no guru when it comes to television production, advertising, and marketing, but I would think that this is what ABC and other networks are trying to achieve, and If taking off shows like AMC, and OLTC that have been tremendously popular over the years, is their way of doing this, they have failed miserably.

You cannot just take away a diamond, and replace it with a semi-precious stone or take away the use of a body part and not expect that the people that effects won’t feel or be seriously impacted by the loss. There are now two hours in my day were I feel a tremendous loss, and there has been nothing thus far and probably ever will, replace that loss.

Now that ABC has hit a few rough patches (it’s been there before) it wants to get rid of or dump, proven over-the-test-of- time soap operas, like AMC, and OLTC, and replace them with a substandard product, in an already over saturated market of television talk shows, and reality television, to which I am trying to so desperately trying to escape for at least 2-3 hours during the day. Shows like the Revolution, and in my opinion, the do not come close to what we have lost, and from the looks of the turn over time or cancellation of these new shows, when it is all said, and done they will not be able to stand the true test of time, or ultimately, hold a candle to AMC and OLTL.

I’ll admit I’m an AMC, OLTL and General Hospital (GH) junkie; but ABC better hope and pray for millions and millions more junkie’s just like me to watch the shows that they forced on us or have put on to replace our beloved soaps, if they expect these shows to have the loyalty, longevity and success of the cancelled AMC and OLTL.

Ora (Disappointed In The CHI)

I have watched Revenge which airs in the evening and might be subject to, and not adverse to watching 666 Park (something) in evening; but I need something of true substance from 11am – 3pm to watch in the daytime. Come on ABC re-think the situation 🙂

I agree!

This proves we were right last summer when we all said this Prospect Park stuff was a big lie.

IMO The FCC and SEC should investigate Disney for fraud.

to little to late.

this should be goodnight america good bye…are u kidding me they are nuts if they are going to think that we are going to watch this crap!

Less talk, more (daytime serial) drama!

I agree with you MORE DRAMA much less cooking / info/talk shows……..

I will never ever tune in to “The Chew”.

Me Either!

I will never tune into abc besides gh!

i agree have not watched the chew never will gma in the afternoon either

the only show i watch on abc is GH and that is it , I dvr it and watch if possible

the he!! with katie, talk shows , if i want to see cooking show will watch
the food network how dumb is he,

he better listen to the viewers and keep GH on air or he may not have a job
either, what a idiot

I would never watch the chew!!!

I don’t watch the chew and I will never watch it. The only show the I will continue to watch is General Hospital! I miss OLTL! I agree that since Frank is at GH it is getting better…I love the OLTL crossovers but it is not OLTL! They need to bring it back or let someone else pick it up!

I wil never watch anything abc puts on to replace OLTL & AMC…

I 100% concur with yo all. l ABC lost Me for good. I will only DVR GH and that’s it! Bring back OLTlL and AMC and make things right with the world again. I miss my soaps and hate Katie and The Chew!!!

Nor will I!!

I would love to believe him, but think he’s a lying 🙂

Agreed. He is full of it. Oh we have REVENGE so soaps are cool again. Well you had GA too. You are just hyping whatever you want there guy. Forget about THE CHEW. No way in he-double hockey sticks will I ever watch that when I could watch a REAL cooking show any time on Food Network … if I wanted … or PBS for that matter … minus all the crap in between.

He wanted the journalists to push the chew because it’s probably on its last legs, and when katie fails, heads will roll. Why fix what ain’t broke? Should have never f%$ked with AMC and OLTL!

If you have to “push it” it’s no good. Like a bad marriage, divorce is the only answer. I have divorced ABC, only watch GH now.

You said it Jay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I willNOT watch the Spew even if u pay me to!!!

Me neither!!!!!!!!!!

i will never ever watch a show that has replaced a soap. Sorry ABC try all you want with all the shows you want…never gonna happen.

I will not watch anything on ABC except for General Hospital. They can drop the chew, will never watch it. When it comes on I change the channel till 3 o’clock for GH. For Good Afternoon American, it the same thing. I will not let my tv be on ABC. So good bye to the other shows. ABC is sure going down hill with their progaming. Release these show so another channel can pick them up. Why are you holding on to these shows if you will not use them. Bring our soaps back and you will again get your audence back too.

I agree with you both….I feel the same way..Mr. Lee should go on this site & read everyone’s comments !!!!!!!!!!!

I’ll never watch the Chew. It’s a stupid program and if I want to watch a cooking show I’ll tune in to one of the cooking channels. Katie Couric is going to flop so they need to figure something out with that daytime slot. Create another show with the characters you can get back from AMC and OLTL, have them play the same characters but make it one show and call it something else.

I would prefer the same charcters..It wouldn’t be the same!!!!

Well I’m glad that GH is getting positive press!! Not sure about 666 working. I’m so looking forward to the changes now with moving the s/l’s that were stale for 3 yrs and the new canvas finally coming together. Robin and Ewen now I’m scared also for Liz my fav. Jason sounds like he is finally getting a clue again. Love Steve B and hope to see his s/l moving also. In light of DWTS I’m happy to get KM moving on to that. Patrick is breaking my heart he needs some hope for Robin being alive. Is Helena behind Ewen and his work……me thinks soooo maybe some Jerry Jax also. Could Jason been effected by mind control the last 3 yrs?? It’s soapy enough to work!

I was thinking maybe a relation to Faison might be behind Ewen.

Good idea…Faison and the rivalry that was between Anna & Robert all those years ago..

i thought that ewen might be fasions son and that is why he is after robin to get to anna

I think Mr. Lee and the rest of the ABC exects have their heads in the wrong place. I hate the Chew and won’t watch it. The only reason ABC is keeping it is because it is cheaper to broadcast. I saw a preview today for Katie and it was some more self-help crap being advertised. How to protect our children; how to protect our money, ect. I would have thought the would have learned their lesson with the Revolution but apparantly not. I think Frank Valentini is doing a great job with GH. It was actually become tolorabe but it needs a lot more to keep me hooked. I don’t want anything to happen to GH but the viewers are still not satisfied. The only thing I watch on ABC is my local news and GH and that is how it will stay. ABC doesn’t even advertise GH like they do the Chew and The View. How supporting is that? Trash the Chew and give us something worth watching.

I agree with you Vanessa..You made some very good points..The chew commericals make my stomach turn…So I change the channel right away…FV stiill has more work to do to keep GH on permantely on abc….And exciting, interesting & make you addicted to GH enough to keep watching it mon.-fri. Trash these talk info show we have all these kind of shows already….These shows are nothing new or fresh!!!! They say viewers want change like these replacement shows ..NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are brain-dead….These shows will never catch on ………………………………I am very stubborn I will only watch GH & nothing else on daytime programming……………………….Our stories that’s it for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You hit the nail on the head Susan – I want to be “Addicted” to GH so I’ll watch it everyday like I was to OLTL. I started watching again because of the crossovers, but killing off all the children, breaking up Jolie, and subtle changes in the OLTL characters isn’t a way to keep me or other OLTL fans! The Chew – it is a Joke and I’d never watch it now or later.

Ok, well if you’re not looking to revive AMC or OLTL, then sell the rights of the show so someone else can take charge and get the shows back on the air!!! This guy is full of crap!!

I think they would be scared to do that-someone may have a hit show!!

You’re a dope!

What this corporate fool is saying is true. No daytime scripted drama except GH which believe me they will be terrified to cancel. Here he said the truth, no OLTL or AMC. Boycott is now forever to me. With all the cable and other networks, who needs ABC except GH. Really, the concept of Revenge is not a good thing to teach to the already crazy public so I would never watch that anyway. The minute I saw the name Revenge I thought it was a terrible idea. Paul Lee loves Revenge. Can he spell moron?

LMAO!!

Big ole liar if you ask me!

Well then. I know “that decision” was made (to cancel OLTL), but it was the WRONG decision, so undo it, Mr. abcd prez! I’m sick of corporate executives and their endless b.s.

Have yet to watch the chew. Agree that gh has become more interesting and I love the crossovers. I would bring Blair back on a reoccurring status. Story lines are moving faster and that keeps it interesting. I hope it continues to do well in new time slot.

I read somewhere that Kassie has agreed to come back for occasional visits.

Don’t watch The Chew you aren’t missing much…I don’t watch it ever..Just watch the GOOFY commericals for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s enough for me.. It makes me VOMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw a commerical on the T.V. with Katie Couric pushing her new show, BUT I saw it on Wesh which is NBC in Fl…For Sept. 10 at 2:00p.m….We all know it’s going to be on abc at 3:00p.m on ABC.. What is going on here????

ABC is dead to me save GH until they do the right thing and give the rights back to Agness Nixon so she can find a new home for AMC and GH.

They are such stinkers 7 won’t release rights to OLTL & AMC…ABC is afraid to do this because they would be afraid of the competition of these soaps on another network (cable station)……………………………That’s what I think……

Exactly!

I have no faith in what the ABC suits say.Their daytime programming, except GH,will have no long term staying power or devoted fan base like AMC & OLTL had.

I agree with you major on your comment…………

Revenge didn’t get people to start watching soaps again. I’ve been watching GH, AMC, and OLTL since I was 9. I will never watch the Chew or any other of their replacement shows. ABC can try all they want but until they bring back my soaps GH will be the only show I watch. And God help them if they cancel GH because then ABC will no longer be a channel on my television.

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does he not realize that these dumb ass programs he has replaced our soaps with do not have the staying power of AMC and OLTL. In 5 10 20 years no one will remember them. But we have watched these soaps some of us since day 1 and will always remember the laughter sorrow and enjoyment they brought into our lives. So yes give the rights back to Agnus and let her find another network willing to air them again….I think he will not do that because he would realize what a huge mistake he has made cancelling them when another network gets the huge ratings he could have had.

You are right Wendy these replacement shows for OLTL & AMC are forgetable….I can remember certain stories from way back when…A lot of memories with our stories……………..You are right about the huge ratings they could have..They had it for 40years plus & to throw it all away for these uninteresting, less productive shows that are here today gone tommoirrow…And no one will ever watch them..They are going to be the big losers…Mr. Lee is as clueless as Brian Frons..Two birds of a feather…They don’t want to please their loyal soap fans they had for years(we the majority viewers of daytime programming) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If ABC/D has no intention of reviving AMC & OLTL then give them back to Agnes Nixon. What is ABC/D afraid of? They already lost millions of viewers, so just give the rights back to Agnes and be done with them. We will still watch and support GH. We will never watch the Spew or the Oprah wannabe. We are not going to support your primetime. You have lost us forever! So ABC/D do the right thing now!

The Spew?? Revolting, repulsive, actually disgusting! NEVER would we watch that mess..
As for GH, it is the ONLY show we watch on ABC ever since they did the hatchet job on soaps. It is, however, getting hard to accept the storylines and the emphasis on
OLTL characters, while trashing the longtime couples (Jason and Sam in particular)
we loved on GH. A little love in the afternoon again would help a lot, and reuniting
the Morgans would make us all happy and interested again.

Should bring OLTL & AMC they still have loyal fans who will never watch the drivel of the Spew or Katie Who. Just like we’re not watching Good Afternoon Asshats. Loving GH best it’s been in years love what RC & FV are doing with it. ABC better wake up and give fans what they want before it’s too late. Soaps are hot.

That 666 crap won’t fly, the Christian right will pitch all kinds of fits and I don’t blame them. If a hotel won’t have a room number with that (or a floor 13) what would make them think that a show with that title will fly. Idiots!

I totally agree with you Jody.

I hope they keep General Hospital on the air forever!!!

So do I …………..

I would not watch the Chew if it were the last show on earth. But if I want to watch cooking shows there are plenty of them on The Cooking Channel and Travel Channel.

That’s ridiculous. What is he talking about? Revenge made soaps cool again? They never stopped being “cool” in my mind. NOTHING can replace a real soap that has history and a fan base that will watch for decades. Also, most ABC soap fans stopped watching ABC in January (except GH)…so I’ve never seen Revenge or The Chew, and I never will. No amount of press will change that. The Chew gets crap ratings, so the fact that he says they’re pleased with that show, tells me they’ve got NO CLUE what they’re talking about. Bunch of idiots in charge over there.
And if they aren’t planning to revive AMC and OLTL, they need to sell the rights back to Agnes Nixon!

To OLTL fan to another I agree with you totally !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe your fans will possibly watch your stupid new shows if you air them at a different time. Put our soaps on maybe you can win some back. HOWEVER – If you have no plans to revive AMC/OLTL what is the reason you will not give back to Agnes Nixon. Please answer that question for everyone. You are holding it hostage yet you do not give a **** about the fans of these long airing shows nor do you care about the shows – So get a flipping clue and give the soaps back to Agnes. You are a total control freak. You are mad at the fans so you keep them to yourselves, selfish garbage I say. Now if we can get everyone that is a fan of Revenge to wait for it on DVD that will drive your network down – Oh wait maybe you will not put them on DVD in order to keep any viewers you do have. So lets all wait for your answer regarding The Soaps Given Back To Agnes.

They should give the rights to AMC & OLTL back to Agnes..If they do ABC is afraid they might have some stiff competetion….And will lose soap fan viewers totally..They have already for the exception of GH..Abc is hanging by a thread….It is pure spite by abc in keeping the rights to our beloved soaps. The rights are of our beloved soaps are collecting dust in the hands of ABC….Give them up abc..Again they are afraid they would lose big time if they released the rights to Agnes…We all know that…I will not watch any replacement shows for our soaps no matter what it is….If it weren’t for GH I wouldn”t be watching abc daytime anymore…

He knew that we wanted AMC&OLTL back. Instead of being ok with what ABC is doing, he should be on our side.

Without the viewers ABC would be a blotch on the wall !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats the loyal soap viewers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What part of NO don’t you understand! We have already told you people we are not watching the chew! No means No! Isn’t the cancellation of the revelution an indication of that? Or are you people that dense?

I guess they are that dense!!!!!!!!!!!!

First 666-sign of satan. Got no use for that show. The chew is eing watched but not by OLTL & AMC true fans. I am so thankful GH is getting positive press. We dont care if they put OLTL back on ABC. Just want them to sell the rights. The only reason not to sell is that they don’t want to give a winning show to anyone ese. Then they would have to admit their mistake. I along with mllions o fans hae lost all respect for ABC & will continue to boycott til the sponsors pull out & others quit them. I hope ABC fails at what ever they attempt. Bring back OLT & AMC.

And wasn’t ABC the ones who also tried the Witches of Eastwick? More witchcraft and satanism, just what we DON”T want. What lame ideas they have.

katie couric is a witch. she is very annoying and nobody will watch her talk show. all my children and one life to live should be on bravo or on hln. come on please pick up one life to live and all my children. we still have hope. abc are not admitting there mistake for cancelling the soaps. putting the pathetic revolution which was cancelled. what a big stupid mistake on abc’s part. at least general hospital is here to stay at least for a year. the ratings are picking up and they will hopefully be number 1 again.

I didn’t expect AMC and OLTL to be revived anyway. How can you revive them when most of their actors have moved on?

I know what you are saying, but it could be done if they wanted to. You don’t need everybody as GH has shown (regarding the OLTL integration). Just a few to get things gowing.

There are still enough left our beloved Viki,Clint etc..I am sure they would come back because OLTL was a big HAPPY FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

abc/d is just dead to me except General Hospital as far as the chew i cant even stand the commercials-and that chef ha i wouldnt let him scoop dog poop for my dogs
thankyou mary

The Chew is the worst show I ever saw on TV. Would never watch it. I realize they cost a lot less to produce and yeah, you get what you pay for – nothing. I enjoy GH but don’t see where they needed to bring the OLTL fans over and make them the stars of the show. I watch GH occasionally but not like I used to. When I see it is all about OLTL I turn it off.

I don”t agree it isn’t all about OLTL..It’s a little bit of everything…Didn’t you like OLTL?????????????? That was my #1 soap opera.. My favorite one of all to watch!!!!!!

No, I was never a fan of OLTL, never liked it only GL and GH. I was very disappointed that they brought over the 4 from OLTL and made them stars of GH. I would have watched OLTL if I wanted to see them. This is only my opinion of course, I am sure the OLTL fans are thrilled to see them become GH stars.

The crossovers from One life to live aren’t the “stars” Of General Hospital, They are now a part of General hospital. and there is nothing wrong with them being there, remove the Characters from One life to live and watch the ratings go down, Fast, I am so sick of negative fans who think they own general hospital, I have watched what has been going on for almost 50 years of General hospital, I also have watched One life to live for almost 44 years and there is nothing wrong with their presence On general hospital, New characters come and go on the soaps all the time. At least now we don’t have to see general hospital taken over by the mob that pretty much killed the ratings for that soap so many years ago, Last year at this time we were wondering if we were also seeing the last of General hospital at least now there is a chance it may survive with the HELP of the CROSSOVERS from ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

Let me just ADD, don’t fool yourself if you think its JUST the crossover’s that have increased the ratings over at GH. No! Its ALSO the writing. If character’s of OLTL were TAKEN OFF Gh, one by one/ litttle by little….TRUST and BELIEVE that the ratings may suffer somewhat at first, BUT as long as ‘good writing ‘ continues the viewership would remain. I am sick and tired of OLTL fans thinking they are entired to GH (they are not). You talk like GH was some flunky of a serial before the few OneLife case showed up. Let me REMIND you that GH, has been winning BEST SERIAL for year’s, year after year, at one time. GH isn’t some rookie of a soap, WET behind the ears, that needef the NIGHT and SHINNING armor of a soap, ONE LIFE to come rescue it. What GH needed was “good writing” and that’s what GH has, and is ‘what’ is really OWNED the credit. If the writing was bad, with all the OLTL fan fare, GH “would not” be increasing in the ratings, no matter how many Onelife fans showed up on GH. Its the writing, OWED the ratings credit over-all…! So cut it out, this is rediculous! Onelife had its moment in time, and it is OVER!!! And Geneal Hospital ” STILL” has their’s. Neither one of these soaps are my favorite, including AMC. I have favored ALL of THEM depending on storyline, but this gets to be rediculous, reading the same ole same ole. One woman wrote on here (2weeks ago) about this ‘same’ debate which insights fights, and name calling…. that, ” this is a fictional show, with fictional character’s, where “grown” people sit on here and fight about. ” I didn’t get a chance to respond to her and by now wouldn’t know where to look (nor do I have the time) BUT it’s beginning to be SAD. Like I stated a few weeks ago, people on here are so worried about these soap character’s who (although off the air) are doing FAR BETTER than us fans, having worked in the medium making money for year’s. They aren’t missing any meals. One of them (unemployed) are doing better than 20 unemployed soap fans. We need to be contacting one another on here (with this economy) asking each other are we ok, AND doing some networking, RATHER than keeping this ‘same ole subject’ alive. Get a new subject. Like Blake said in February, ” let the show go folks”. As for what I first logged on to comment about to you :
“Our Focus is On General Hospital! We Are Not Looking to Revive AMC & OLTL!”

And what I wanted to say: I told you so Barbara and been telling you so!

Now what do I purpose, CONTINUED boycott of ABC during those time slots of cancelled soaps, and boycott ALL programming OTHER THAN GH. And occasional post making sure ALL soap fans are doing the same. Also, cancel cable which DISNEY- which makes money from ALL the cable channels. Plus all the many other/ different suggestions I use to post. Lots of things to continue to do. UDERSTAND, those shows are not going to EVER come back as they use to be. Why? They cost TOO much to produce, wardrobe, sets, and the many salaries of the many crews. It’s an end of an era. AT BEST, we will be lucky if we get ‘ those shows’ back as a ‘ half hour ‘ serial, combined into a hour with the returning cast of AMC and OLTL, together for a 1 hour soap. At Best!

I agree with iloveabcsoaps and couldn’t have said it better myself. Yes, it is the good writing and also I might add, the fact that there isn’t a big selection of soaps to watch any longer. OLTL fans act as if those four didn’t come over and take their fans with them that GH would be canceled. I am simply saying that I have watched GH for years and never watched OLTL and we didn’t need them to bring the ratings up. The show is good now with or without the OLTL characters. There are many actors/actresses on soaps who were canceled that lost their jobs and any one of those from any of the other soaps canceled would have brought their fan base to GH had they been hired. Keep up the good work, writers, that is what is making people watch, not because OLTL characters were brought here. One by one they could disappear and GH would survive.

But my loyalties will always be to OLTL..On or not!!!!! I beg to differ on OLTL crossovers..I think it is a definite plus for GH because you got OLTL fans watching GH…Which gives GH even more viewers…….Gh will survive because of the writers from OLTL….The crossovers help again get OLTL fans tunnig in on GH…………….New writers from OLTL have a lot to do with Gh’s success….Before they came aboard the stories were TOO mob oriented for a very long time..Those kind of stories where one of the on going ones for too long..So the ex-writers of OLTL gave GH a face-lift which it needed..

The only reason I watch GH is because of the OLTL crossovers! However, I am not a fan of how they have changed the OLTL characters, destruction of OLTL history and killing the babies off. They are going to have to do better to keep me.

I agree with Barbara t.Loves OLTL!!!!!!!! Couldn’t have said it better myself…

It’s both the good writing from ex-OLTL & the crossovers from OLTL..It”s teamwork…………………………………

I agree. And this isnt a cross over. This is Cartini’s ( Frank V and Ron C, executive producer and head writer) concerted effort to continue One Life stories on GH.
It would have worked if he decided to fully integrate the characters into GH and cut their llandview ties but they are determined to revive One Life within GH.

That is bound to upset GH fans that never watched OLTL and have no emotional ties to the characters or stories. Soap fans are far too territorial. I watched OLTL off and on since the late 70s and I started Gh in 1969.

I think Cartini have really dropped the ball here and like Tali I only watch certain scenes when I DVR the show ever now and then. The true history of GH has been backburnered in favor of Cartini’s vision. I didnt like the majority of what they did with OLTL and I dont like them on GH.

And responding to one of the posters below GH’s ratings havent risen. They barely have a little over 2 million viewers-big whoop! Lol. When One Life went off the air their final ratings gave them around 2.5 million viewers. Wow, block buster-not! I miss the original GH of the 90s, the 80s and the 70s.
This show on the air today isnt GH, its a mere shadow. I’m no longer a fan and thats sad because I watched the show for over 42 yrs! SMH. ( Shaking my head)

Daytime soap fans, we have a real opportunity here. Let’s not blow it. We have a long battle ahead of us, but if we refuse to tune into whatever crap they put on from noon through four o’clock, except GH, and keep on doing this for at least the next year, we will be sending a huge message that we want our stories; not this other garbage. They won’t listen to our letters and posts, but sooner or later, when their feeble attempts at ulternative programing fail to get the ratings they want, advertisers will begin to look for other shows to sponsor. TIIC at ABC gravely under estimated the power of soap fans. We need to stick together regardless of what our favorite soap is/was and stand with GH in order to send a loud message. We cannot stop refusing to watch other shows and applying pressure. GAA, The Chew, Katie…all such replacement shows must fail to get ratings or positive press. Then and IF they bring back our stories, we must raise the roof in praise and keep the ratings high; make them rue the day they ever cancelled our shows. JMHO.

I agree, and I have been boycotting abc since they canceled All my children and One life to live, I will never watch there network till one life to live is back where it belongs, the fans have shown how we feel by not watching anything at 2 O’clock, We got rid of the revolution and will make the gaa ratings sink to, I have no clue who is watching the chew, what a waste of a show is that. I watch general hospital, that’s all they have me for and that will stay Like that till the soaps are put back where they belong. JMHO TO.

well said! Keep up the boycott of daytime ABC BS! Exceopt GH of course! 🙂

They want to lose the loyal soap fans they had for 40 years plus…………And ABC ISN”T #1 anymore..It’s their own fault………………………….They TOTALLY PISS ME OFF!!!!!!!! I will definetely keep boycotting abc , excert for GH!!!!!!!!!

I saw a commerical for Katie Couric’s new show only I saw it on Wesh which is NBC in fl. For Sept. 10 at 2:OO p.m…….We all know it is going to be on ABC Sept. 10 at 3:00.m. So why is commerical on NBC. It isn’t the first time I have seen it being advertised on NBC……………………What’s up with that??? Whats your opinion on that… I found it odd!!!!!!!!

I’m with you Rodd. Frankly, NONE of their other programming really interests me so it is easy enough to do. 🙂

I am going on further. I, like a lot of people have a few reality shows that I like (the better produced ones likes Amazing Race), but I am taking a STAND and I am giving them all up. It occurred to me as I was watching Master Chef the other night. I have seen it all already.

I would rather watch old re-runs of Hawaii 5-0 or I Love Lucy then one more reality show. I MISS scripted shows. I miss the 20-something soaps that used to be on – when you could turn the TV on in the afternoon and have no trouble finding a great scripted soap. I’m just sick of all this reality garbage. I am taking a personal stand. I may be one of the few, but I have reached that point in my life where I value quality and things like The Chew are not quality.

Susan M,

Katie is a syndicated show like Live with Kelly. Although it is produced by ABC, it can air on NBC, CBS or Fox stations.

In your market, it will air on the NBC station instead of the ABC station. Your ABC station will air some other show at 3:00pm instead.

Never thought of it that way…Thanks……….

The question becomes: Will Revenge last 40+ years? The probable answer: NO. I haven’t watched it. I had heard that it was one of the shows on the cancel list.

I am a shut-in. I watch alot of TV, Mr. Lee. I can tell you the circuit the stars make through the NY talk and interview shows, from GMA or Today on through to David Letterman or Jay Leno. The formats of daytime “hosted shows” are identical, and totally dependent on show empahsis, i.e. women’s issues (The View, The Talk), general entertainment (Live with Kelly, Ellen DeGeneres) food and crafts (The Chew, Rachel Ray). While each network thinks they are coming up with a new, exciting show, the reality is, they are not. And they get boring. Very boring.
Scripted television costs more, yes, but by the very act of having to put new words onto paper, and present a script breaks the tedium of having to watch the same file of actors, set up the same clip, tell the same jokes to clone hosts, who ask the same questions…..you get the picture. I have watched marathons of shows on cable channels that I have already watched in marathons before, rather than watch hosted-shows, or reality shows, which are also being shown in marathons on other cable channels. Television in general has gone downhill. If the executives who control the type and content of the shows being produced lived up to the potential of their medium, TV would be a much more interesting place. There are thousands of talented actors, scriptwriters, designers, cameramen and all the support staff out there, waiting for the executives to remember that TV must be entertaining. Even Daytime TV.

Revenge is not on any cancel list…it was one of ABC’s biggest hits last season. I personally love the show and can’t wait until it comes back.

I do agree with you about the “hosted” talk shows. They are all the same and I’m bored to tears with them. I do record a couple–Kelly and Ellen–but I FF through the boring stuff. The rest of them I don’t even bother with.

And the reality shows are just dumbing-down America. The stupidity is astounding!

I kinda regret…not giving Revenge a try. I just couldn’t find the time. and that’s because of how much i like Madeleine Stowe.

the other show… i know i will start… and hopefully, it succeeds.. is 666 Park Avenue… I don’t like the title… as the 666 connotation… makes me leary.
however, 666 stars – Vanessa Williams… ex-desperate housewives, ugly betty. She always keeps my attention… sassy, not over the top… plays *itch… too well. does comedy, drama… which is a rare feat.
Terry O’quinn, ex-lost… and dave Annabelle, ex-brothers and sisters… who i really liked. This could be good… i’ve liked the promos.

Patrick, you must watch Season 1 of Revenge and get caught up. Then you WILL find the time to watch when it comes back for Season 2.

I am also looking forward to 666 Park. Hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Never watched Revenge..I watch the shows I have always watched…That’ enough for me!!!!!

Dear Mr. Lee. Start listening to your viewers who give you the ratings you’re looking for. We are NOT watching the replacement shows!!!!!!! You want ratings, give us what we want! AMC and OLTL.

I don’t trust anyone at ABC any further than I could throw them. This guy is full of it.

Forget it everyone! ABCD will always get an F for canceling our soaps. So we can boycott non soaps, but don’t expect new scripted shows. Reality TV has changed everything. Who would have thought AMC would be taken off the air. Even though the show devolved, at the end with better writers, it became recognizable; yet was too late like GL. OLTL and ATWT should have never been cancelled but unlike when other soaps were axed for ratings; these well written shows, especially OLTL had the ratings, we’re canned for cheaper productions.

I have watched AMC, OLTL and GH for about 40 years and it just makes me sick to think of the out and out disrepsect that ABC has for Agnes Nixon and of course THE FANS!!!! Ever since OLTL went off the air in January the only daytime tv show i watch on ABC is GH. Would never and Will never watch any replacement show that ABC has to offer!!!! As for Revenge, it’s actually a great show, but with moving it to a new time slot this fall, we’ll see if it makes it a third season. Although, Desparate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters and originally Grey’s Antomey all did very well on Sunday nights. I miss OLTL most of all, but i am happy that GH has RC and FV reviving it again. Of course i love that some of the characters from OLTL are now on GH, and it’s great that they are wrapping up or are gonna wrap up open ended storylines from OLTL. No disrespect to longtime GH viewers (as i am as well) but we daytime fans, as you all know, will get our “Love in the Afternoon” fix anyway we can……..

“Our Focus is On General Hospital! We Are Not Looking to Revive AMC & OLTL!”

And with the exception of GH, I’m not looking to watch anything on ABC.

I for one think he is blowing smoke and GH will go by the way side I hope I am wrong but I think they want out that is why he is singing the Chew’s praises. The only way maybe it might stay if the ratings go thru the roof so I will continue to tape it and watch but remember they said move AMC to California blah blah then boom they pulled the rug!

Everyone remember that Brian Frons was the one to pull AMC & OLTL off the air n put the chew n the other show that got canceled on n like the coward he is he left ABC bcuz he knew he made a mistake n he was going to get fired for putting 2 talk shows on that won’t get the ratings. I read that Katie Couric told ABC that she wants to follow GH bcuz she knows that GH fans will boycott her show if they cancel GH n she doesn’t want that. We all know ABC is all about the ratings so cross your fingers that ABC doesn’t back out of the contract with GH to keep GAA on instead!!!

I’m glad General Hospital is still on – I watch it daily. But I still will not watch any other ABC shows. I do not like the fact they cancelled the two soaps that I had watched from the beginning – and I will not forgive that error! Bring back All My Children and One Life to Live (or permit someone else to bring them back to the air) and then I will go back to ABC.

He’s just another corporate hack, no different from the rest. When the entertainment industry was taken over by international business conglomerates, the whole culture changed. Or maybe more correctly, the entertainment culture was kicked out and replaced by a stern and oncompromising committment to the bottom line. There’s no vision left, or allowed, certainly not encouraged without an immediate return. These people would gladly broadcast a blank screen if they thought they’d make money doing it.
They care NOTHING for the viewers, or the creators, or the cast, crews, providers of any sort. NOTHING.

I’m so amazed that ABC is so out of touch with it’s daytime audience, no clue whats so ever. Keep ignoring the fans and see what happens..you will have zero growth. There is no reason OLTL could not be easily resurrected. Ron Carlivati and Frank Valenti have made it so simple with the crossovers..get a clue and take advantage of the fans need to see these shows.

Just another ABC goof insulting us by trying to tell us what we want – and then further spitting in our face by telling us “we are not looking to revive AMC & OLTL”. And ABC is also not intrested in letting any other network revive them. Well I’m not interested in reviving my interest in ABC programming. Enjoy your downward spiral ABC – you deserve it!

Carol Burnett Talks About Being a Superfan of ‘All My Children’ on ‘Live with Kelly and Mark’

In a heartfelt reunion, of sorts, the one and only Carol Burnett appeared on Monday March 25th episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.

Burnett had first met Kelly Ripa (Hayley) and Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo) back when they all appeared on All My Children together. Carol played Verla Grubbs first in 1983 and then again in the 90’s.

Host Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, AMC) noted to Burnett that “we go back a long time”. She also described Burnett’s character of Verla Grubbs, “extraordinary in every way.”

Carol’s love for All My Children is well-documented, hence legendary soap creator, Agnes Nixon, created the role of Verla for Burnett.

Speaking on how her passion for All My Children began, Carol told Kelly and Mark, “It started with my kids. They would watch at noon. I said, ‘What are you guys doing?’ I sat down and I started to watch and I got hooked!”

When Carol’s family decided to travel through Europe during one summer, the comedic legend recalled thinking, “How am I going to last if I don’t know what’s going on in Pine Valley?” She revealed she had a friend, “who sent me a telegram to the (different hotels) on Fridays to bring me up to date.”

In a hilarious moment from the segment, Carol recalled receiving a late night telegram while in Lake Cuomo when there was a knock at her hotel room door from the hotel manager who was shaking.

Carol related what it said, “Erica is still in a coma. Mark slipped again and ran away from rehab.” As Kelly and Mark broke into laughter, Burnett continued, “Chuck has learned that Donna is carrying his baby, who was once a hooker.”

Check out Carol explaining how she became an AMC Superfan below.

Malachy McCourt, ‘Ryan’s Hope’ and ‘All My Children’ Actor, Dead at 92

If you watched Ryan’s Hope through its 14-year-run, you know that Kevin the bartender became a beloved “member’ of the Ryan clan on the defunct ABC daytime drama series. The character of Kevin MacGuiness became so loved by the fans because of the actor who portrayed him, Malachy McCourt.

Sadly, according to his wife Diana McCourt to The New York Times, Malachy passed away on Monday from a heart condition and battling cancer. The actor was 92-years-old.

Playing Kevin on Ryan’s Hope was not much of a stretch for McCourt, because in his lifetime, he was the owner of 1950s Irish pub Malachy’s on Third Avenue in Manhattan. Known as one of the city’s great story-tellers, patrons from longshoremen to the actor Richard Harris would stop in and talk all things Irish with . On Ryan’s Hope, Kevin was best friends to “Ryan’s Bar” owner, Johnny Ryan (Bernie Barrow) and he tried to keep Delia (Ilene Kristen) on the straight and narrow.

In his soap opera career, McCourt also was widely-known for his role of Father Clarence McCourt on All My Children especially come Christmastime. Was Clarence, actually St. Nick? That was always the proverbial question. McCourt also appeared on the New York soaps: One Life To Live, Search For Tomorrow and Another World. Other roles included: Devil’s Own, Brewster’s Millions, The Molly Maguires, and Starman, to name

Later in 2006, Malachy ran for governor of the state of New York as a Green Party candidate. He tackled social issues of the time including being an advocate for gay and lesbian groups to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

McCourt’s childhood was recounted within his brother Frank McCourt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes, which detailed their mother’s attempt to raise the four of their surviving seven children in poverty in Limerick, Ireland. Later, Malachy wrote his own memoirs: 1998’s Monk Swimming, and 2000’s Singing My Him Song.

Malachy is survived by his aforementioned wife, Diana, daughter Siobhan McCourt; sons Malachy Jr., Conor and Cormac; stepdaughter Nina Galin; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Share you remembrances and condolences for Malachy McCourt via the comment section, but first check out this scene from a 1983 episode of “Ryan’s Hope” featuring the late actor with Ilene Kristen.
