ABC's Brian Frons on soaps: "We're down to the last few that are still strong, viable & economically sound!"

In another interview today, this time with TheWrap, ABC Daytime President Brian Frons, offered up this statement, when asked about the landscape of the soap genre  (now that he decided to end the lives of One Life to Live and All My Children, thus leaving daytime soaps within only four surviving members), “It’s like any other genre on TV, the strongest will survive. Right now we’re down to the last few that are still strong and viable and economically sound. ”

Frons then made a few other comments about his new replacements, The Chew and The Revolution, that will join The View, and General Hospital, forming the ABC Daytime line-up. He also adddressed,  if there is any hope that somehow he would reconsider bringing back OLTL and AMC.  Here are a few excerpts:

Frons on soap fans lobbying to get OLTL and AMC back on-air and if there is any hope: “No. We really spent a lot of time learning from our success with The View, talking to viewers about what they’re looking for and we have tremendous respect for the passion of our serial fans. But we’re at a point with these two shows, as much as they’ve done for the network, and as much as we appreciate them — their time here has come to an end. And we’re going to spend our efforts trying to make a success out of the two new shows, The Chew and The Revolution, which are in genres that, as we talk to viewers, they want more of.”

Frons on if a 40-year old plus show can survive in this day and age anymore:  “Hm. Well, I’ll answer that in a non-way. I once said to Agnes Nixon, Agnes, did you ever think these shows would have been around for 40 years? And she said ‘Honey, I was hoping for six months.’ So I don’t think anybody can ever predict that something can be around that long. I certainly hope that these shows can be around for a quarter that long. I’d be thrilled.”

So it looks like General Hospital, and The Young and the Restless have the strongest chance of surviving, but for how long? That, will be the ongoing question in the months and year ahead.

I have 4 words for Brian Frons….Shut The F Up!! You’re a complete moron who wouldn’t know what the viewers wanted if we came up and tatooed it on your fat azz!! Congratulations for being the downfall of daytime tv…may your new shows go belly up!!

I agree with you. I am so darn fed up it’s not even funny. How dare them take off one of the best two soaps that have been on forever. I think he is a moron also.!!!!!!!

Dear Mr. Frons:

Have you ever heard of “The Food Network” or “The Cooking Channel”? How about the Health Channel? If i want to watch shows about food or health I will watch those channels just to spite you and your stupid shows. I want you to know that I HATE the VIEW!!! It SUCKS!!! Why do I care about the opinions of these women especially the Racist Woopie Goldberg, Joy Who thinks she knows it all, Elizabeth and Sherri who are nobody’s and Barbara Walters who just need to retire!!!! DISNEY is also out to me and my family. How much MONEY did you make off this DEAL??? Your shows are going to flop no matter what you put on because at least people that work tivo their shows now…there is nothing on these shows worth tivoing that I can’t go to the internet and find out later….SOAPS are a way to get out of your everyday life..They are an escape…the last thing people need is MORE REALITY!!!! DUMB…DUMB…DUMB

Hahaha Jerk Frons:

It looks like advertisers are beginning to pull their ads. I have been reading where a lot of viewers like myself WILL NEVER WATCH ABC AGAIN!!!! I also have read where your actions are not only creating major job loss for all of the actors and crews for these two shows, but your actions are trickling over into other companies as well. You’re dipping into other food chains…not a very smart move. Well Jerk Frons…its gonna suck to be you!!! I will enjoy watching you fall from the top of ABC on your big fat XYZ!!! I can only hope you get spit on many times a day as you hold that ass you call a face up high. I hope ABC finally sees the light and fires your ass, and that one act will prove there is someone at the head of ABC with half a brain after all. I know…maybe they will hire you on Santa Barbara to be God again…no wait….oh yeah that one went of the air after your bad karma touched it too…face it Jerk Frons…you suck!!!!!!!!

Brian Frons is an ass!

That is an insult to asses! He is the DUMBEST man in business! Cancelling soaps!! He has NO IDEA how many people are so very loyal and will hate him so much that they NEVER turn to his network again! I know that I never will – and I like No Ordinary Family – but I will never watch it again either, my husband is watching despearate housewives and I am going to leave the room! I wish there was some way that I could disrupt his life the way he has mine! I have recorded and worked out to both shows for 30 years – which network now gets the many hours I used to give ABC?? Not sure – but it won’t be his! Maybe somebody wil “do unto him as he hath done to us”……..taken away a treasured friend!

No HOPE! Wow. Quite dismissive. Don’t bother because the decisions have been made. A focus group has determined our fate.

I find the whole thing distasteful and unacceptable. Well, Mr. Frons with all respect, I will not be watching another show about food or weight. Good Luck with this and all future executive decisions.

All I have to say is I wish I had watched all the Episodes of these 2 Shows, loving OLTL right now and I only started watching during the Eli Story & I started watching AMC last year as well. This is truly sad in deed I kept wondering why he needs to cancel them any way considering there is only 3 ABC Soaps, that’s so stupid and as we Jamaicans would say “Brian Frons fi bun out”. He doesn’t care about the Actors & us Fans, that’s a whole lotta talent he is wasting. I will dearly Miss these 2 Shows, The Characters, The Actors and just about everything. Viva la OLTL & AMC & may Brian Frons burn in hell.

WTF — who is Brian Fons talking to, himself? no one wants those new shows, for sure not to take over AMC and OLTL — is he on drugs?

Michael you need to do something about this, I think you know what will work or not, and I will support you. I have media channels to push whatever you want to do… we can not let them cancel these shows!

Frons has to be the most hated man in America right now. What an idiot.

AMEN!!!!!

AMEN indeed!

umm.. OLTL has been finishing fourth on a regular basis. It audience is growing, not declining. It comes in under budget. The last four shows are not the strongest most economically viable. OLTL beat 2 of them regularly. I am so pissed. I hate this man.

I hate him too. This may be the dumbest man in all of television. He’s cancelling two award-winning admittedly “iconic” shows to put on SWILL that will have NO viewers just because it’s CHEAPER?? Well of COURSE it’s CHEAPER, GARBAGE is ALWAYS cheaper than quality. I cannot fully express how much I despise this man, and if he actually is dumb enough to think that “The Chew” can POSSIBLY be on a par with “The View”, he’s even dumber than he looks. I watch The View for one reason and her name is Whoopi Goldberg. Unless Battali, Oz or any of the other losers on this new garbage program is a winner of an Emmy/Grammy/Oscar/Tony (and VERY few people meet that standard) that they have kept hidden, it’s time to make it known. Frons doesn’t seem to recognize the meaning of quality…only greed (cuz the shows were not LOSING money, he just wants to up the profit margin…but it WON’T work, cuz these are going to be flops). I used to be a VERY loyal ABC viewer not only during the daytime but in the evenings too, but they’ve now cancelled most of what I want to watch and their lineup for next season looks absolutely AWFUL. I’ll still watch Castle (unless ABC/Disney has killed Beckett too) and The View (cuz I love Whoopi), but otherwise, I think I’ll be tuning to CBS…they have some new shows coming out that actually look decent (unlike ABC’s). Oh…and I’ll be boycotting Disney for life, because I ultimately blame THEM.

I am very disapointed with ABC to dropped these two soaps. I have been watching soaps as long as I can remember and I thought I would grow old watching them. I am not please with all the talk shows, nor I am I interested in reality shows. I get a dose of reality everyday in my real world. I don’t need anyone elses. Thank you very much. 🙁

what a crock,,,,
we have enough reality and food shows to sink the Titanic.
I guess GH and B&B will be next, then Days and Y&R,,, sad ,very sad to see out shows go

You’re a dumb ass! What viewers have you been talking too that want these new shows? Yeah there aren’t many of them. I hope he loses his job and never gets another one after abc falls.

Mr. Frons is grasping at straws trying to save his job by trying to appeal to the under thirty viewers. In todays world older adults like Mr Frons are worried about being replaced with a young college graduate. He would be smart if he kept in touch with the older viewer and what they wanted to watch . We have more time to spend in front of the tv watching our soap operas and movies, NOT cooking shows , game shows and reality tv. Good luck ABC with these tactics, sounds like you a lost a lot of viewers. I might be only one but I will have lots of company.

I am saddened that these shows are cancelled. OLTL is at its best creatively. I also think that the writing for the soaps did not adjust the changes in viewership would have also contributed to the down fall in daytime.

I can’t believe this! OLTL is the best! As though we don’t have enough of those food & fitness shows & such already. I’ld love to see Brian Frons come on an episode of OLTL & let Clint have a field day with his rifle on him. Sad days ahead for soap fans. Thank God my friend & I went to the last Broadway Cares. That was bad enough, but this is GARBAGE!

If your money hungry your evil!!! I hate food shows. Where can we locate statistics on who watches what? I wanted to know if the soap viewers are being listned to at all, or are you trying to bump us off of ABC all together? Chew please not going to watch.

It’s going to be so funny when he 2 new “babies” fall in months!!! I will BAN ABC from now on!! Brian Frons need to be fired when will ABC see this!! They will never have the loyal fans that we were ever again! I have been watching these shows for 33 years now & ur lack of loyalty will NOT go unnoticed!

This guy is an IDIOT!!! No wonder ABC’s ratings have fallen, the ONLY shows that I even turned to his network were AMC and OLTL – NO WAY will I EVER watch the new shows – nor any others for that matter. ABC is falling in ratings – wait till there is no soaps to watch – I have no reason to turn in any more – who ever picked this guy and is listening to him – you have put your hopes behind the wrong guy! If you want to have a network at all – you better fire him and fire him quick!!!!!!! This is the dumbest thing you could EVER do – these shows are the ONLY good about ABC!!!!!

Please visit http://www.abcnetworksucks.com for info on how to save AMC & OLTL

WE WILL NOT ACCEPT THE DECISION OF JACKASS FRONS

Who wants more food and self help shows????? They are giving up shows that have been on for decades for shows that will undoubtedly fail. They are alienating viewers ages 10-80. It makes no sense. I watch 6 hours of programming on ABC a week. When OLTL is gone it will be down to ONE hour. When Modern Family and The Middle are gone it will be ZERO.

The new shows will need lots of luck- since none of the soap fans will be watching the new shows. I cant believe they are replacing these soaps with more reality/food show. There’s already too many!! It’s a shame this moron wont realize his mistake until its too late.

Hi everyone, I reiterate all your sentiments about the loss of our beloved soaps. My Mother went into the hospital Thursday and I just hated telling her about the soaps being cancelled. We certainly wont be watching a food show…boring!!!! and I am sick of diet/exercise shows(sounds like an hour long infomercial). And also getting rid of Soapnet for another kid network…screw ABC and their Family of networks…unfortunately I have to watch ESPN for the NBA playoffs(big Celtics fan here).

Does anyone have an idea why ABC has allowed all the comments about the show to continue as well as posting email addresses and numbers for soap fans to contact? What is the use since according to his allmighty, Brian Frons, there is no changing their minds?

EVIL!!!! The viewers should have the right to watch a show that has been on for years, and be heard. How rude, and cold hearted could Frons be. Screw the money, we pay to watch TV so we should be able to see what we want to see. Is ABC really in some kind of financial bind? If NOT you probably will be after getting rid of our favorite shows. I would cry at night if I was the one firing or getting rid of those talented actors, and actresses. So sad AMC came to Los Angeles from New York to continue their carrer. Sussan Lucci was excited when she saw the sets in LA they where much bigger, and she was excited to be in a new setting with New Beginnings now what? Malto Mario or whoever you are no we are not soap addicted, we just want to hold on to a show that has been around for such a long time bringing many fans of all ages and genders pleasure. Don’t dissapoint us let our shows continue for many more years.

So this “Mr. bigshot” is a joke……I think Oprah should put AMC and OLTL on her network and she would be the biggest network on daytime television…..I mean someone needs to save these soap opera’s because look at all the fans that it is impacting….i wont be watching ABC after OLTL goes off…..this guy needs to be fired or ABC is going to fall flat on its face and when it does i will laugh so hard so put on these food shows or whatever else u want they’re not even going to come close to AMC or OLTL….KEEP AMC AND OLTL ON!!!!!!!

Unfortunately Oprah said no to adding our soaps to her channel. Well, Not only will I be blocking abc come january, but OWN has now been blocked. Oprah, you have lost a fan.

Just when I thought this man couln’t make me hate him anymore than I already do…
I”m sick, litterally sick to my stomach over this.

This thing that completly blows my mind is how ABC recently decided to move to LA, California to continue these shows in a BRAND new studio. So you mean to tell me they spent all this money to move, invest in new set material and equiptment to only cancel 2 of the best soap opera shows on the network? But, Mr. Frons says “We’re down to the last few that are still strong, viable & economically sound!” ….Yes, I understand OLTL and AMC are not the only soaps recorded through this studio… but you cannot tell me that these 2 shows are not contributing to viewer rates. This is so hyprocritical… You have the money to spend on a new studio, you CLEARLY have the money to keep the shows running. Correct me if I’m wrong.. AMC is one of the longest running soap operas ( if not the 1st , I believe) in history.. Totally wrong to just “off” the show if you ask me.

I have watched AMC for over 35 years I have NEVER WATCHED the View. Who cares what Barbara Walters and company thinks! Of course I worked for a number of those years so VCR’d them. I am college educated, an avid internet user and can read or search for anything I would like answers to rather than watch mediocre television. Soaps are a great way to unwind, to care about characters other than day to day stress and politics. I WAS a GMA, ABC evening news, AMC and other shows of yours loyal viewer (even when my husband said ABC was to liberal and biased in their news). Well guess what now I will be changing channels!!!!

This Frons guy is just pure evil. IF he nor abc care about the fans then well, we don’t give a crap about them either. Good bye abc. Frons you are a heartless bastard

I seriously want to know what this “research” is he keeps talking about… did anyone else here get a survey about what they want to see on daytime TV and answer with a resounding “Oh PLEASE, more cooking shows and reality shows… I can’t get enough from among the other 463 that air constantly!!!” Didn’t think so.

Will these messages got to mr. fronz

Please visit http://www.abcnetworksucks.com for information on how to save our soaps!
That’s http://www.abcnetworksucks.com

He’s full of shit. Read his interview after announcing that SoapNet was going off the air. He stated that the daytime lineup was safe. The guy is a liar! And Oprah? That little statement sounded to me like ABC “asked” (real meaning told) her to do that to try and cool things down. It didn’t sound sincere and like something that she truly believed in. Her channel isn’t doing so well I hear. Well if I think back 25 years ago the only reason I starting watching this unknown called Oprah Winfrey was because of the lead in she had…. AMC, OLTL & GH. Has she forgotten already that it was the SOAP fans who played a big part in your success. Also I bet the message boads at OWN will never buzz they way they have this past week again.

Strongest economically? OLTL is consistently on or under budget! Give me a break Fronz! GH is “your baby” and everyone knows it! Truth is, its overrated IMO compared to OLTL. Though I expect a year or two from now we will be hearing GH is a goner too! Brian Fronz, a real class act!

I don’t think it’ll even be a year. They just hired a new Head Writer for GH which Frons ALSO did at AMC (he even gave her a three YEAR contract) and then just two WEEKS later he cancelled the show. If I were a GH fan, I would be pretty damn nervous that history was about to repeat itself. I give it less than a year if Frons gets his way. Hopefully HE will get the ax instead and ABC/Disney will say that they’ve reconsidered and the only job lost will be the one belonging to Brian Frons (rather than the entire casts and crews of these two great, award-winning shows).

Well…I can DREAM, can’t I? 😉

I think this is a bunch of bs. People use dvr and tape recorders. I named my daughter after kendall on AMC. She is only 2 years old. I was hoping she could grow up with the show like I did. My mom would tape it so we could watch it on the weekends. I would like to know who did the survey.NO ONE wants more food shows that is what cable is for. Everyone that I know likes the soaps because we can relax and escape from are problems. When these shows are stoped I will put a block on abc so no one in my family can turn on the channel.

This is bull, I can not believe that you are cancelling AMC and OLTL for another
stupid food show and a reality show. I for one will not be watching them. I work for a living so I would always tape my shows and watch them at night and you are going to take that away from me and from millions of other viewers that do the same thing. I think it all boils down to the fact that ABC DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE VIEWERS or they would change their minds. I will not be watching ABC anymore as the only shows I ever watched were my soaps and I do not like General Hospital. However I hope you can at least keep that show going for the fans that do like it. GOOD BYE ABC

Ultimately I blame Disney. IMHO, things have gone downhill at ABC since Disney bought it. Disney used to be a company I respected a great deal, but lately they’ve become nothing but money grubbers who ONLY care about the holy profit-margin. I mean, really…they actually filed to *trademark* “Seal Team Six” just two days after the bin Ladin raid…talk about stepping up to ca$h in! 🙁 I’m SO disappointed in them and I vow right now that I will never let another penny of my money flow to the Disney Corporation in any way. Which makes me really sad, I was really looking forward to seeing PotC next week for my birthday, but that WON’T be happening now. I’m done with Disney, as they’re obviously done with me.

Brian Frons you should go byby The View stinks like a skunk. A ll My Children a One Life To Live are a A+ but you are F- an the view is F- such stuped show . An I hope Brian Frons chokes on chew and revolution. To bad ABC fireres you rean end you know what Imean.

I suspect cancelling these ‘soap operas’ will have an unintended backlash of fewer daytime viewers overall. The info/food/health shows can be found on so many other channels, but good, imaginative, compelling story-telling seemed to remain the province of the ‘original’ networks. The soap advertisers and their dramas helped make the networks what they are today! – or rather, what they were. I lament the passing of an important part of American TV history, and will turn elsewhere for on-going entertainment.

I love AMC & OLTL. I love all the soaps. I am heartbroken over the cancellations. I pray they will b saved & remain on tv. Since , it’s about money, than why can’t both soaps be a half hour, or a weekly primetime series, or combine both soaps, but don’t cancel. Soaps r very important 2 me & so many others. There is not much left good on tv anymore. Please, NO MORE REALITY OR COOKING SHOWS. I WILL NEVER WATCH THECHEW OR THE REVELATION. I feel like i am losing a part of my family. I can’t imagine no more Pine Valley, or Llanview anymore. I pray another channel picks up the 2 soaps. I grew up watching these soaps with my Mom, Grandmother, or Great Grandmother. Please someone help save our soaps. If the 2 soaps r not saved, then I would love it if a dvd was made showing the ending finales 2 have of the 2 soaps. I will anyways love My Soap Operas& I will always b a Lifetime Fan of the soaps. I have signed petitions & if I were rich i would buy a channel & save them. Agnes Nixon is a brilliant& genius, & fantastic writer. Thanks Agnes 4 the best gift of AMC & OLTL 4 all of these years& i am so grateful. In my opinion, you were so disrespected by the many people involved with the 2 soaps cancellations. You deserve so much better than this& so many people should b apologizing 2 you. I have signed petitions, & I will keep praying for a miracle for AMC & OLTL to be saved. I am heartbroken over these cancellations.

Has anything been done? Anyone heard? I went to abcnetworksucks.com and it is no longer trying to save the soaps! Are all of our hopes and dreams shattered???????

MR. Frons , I am appalled by your decision of taking 2 soap operas off the air. I record everyone of them & I listen to them at night . To say that your ratings goes down is BULLSHIT , Go ahead , put your new shows like reality shows , talk shows, food shows etc… they are so BORING….. then your ratings will surely go down . I hope all the actors ( that you laid off) would put their heads together & BUY the station ABC , then you will see what a big mistake you made. All my friends & I are done with you & we are hoping you FAIL . TO ALL THE ACTORS I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST & I LOVE YOU ALL .

I am so horrified by abc going ahead with this venture of frons , do they not realize that they are going to lose alot of their veiwers, because of this idiotic man plans to cancel our beloved soaps AMC, OLTL and possibly GH. You need to save your selves abc , or you you are going down hill. Nobody will be watching your stupid programming ever, the chew will be the first to go down hill with bad ratings. Other reality shows will also go down hill because of bad ratings. Save yourselves abc before its to late, Leeave our beloved soaps on tv where they belong, and have been for over 40 years. Is this stupid man worth abc bad ratings. Fire him before its to late .

He is an idiot!!!!!!

Who ever is over FRONS needs to FIRE is pathic ass!!! He doesn’t know what the h… he is talking about. I hope the CHEW does DOWN fastert than the TITANIC!!!

I have watched AMC since the first day it came on …Never have i been as devoted to a TV show …..It is like apart of my family and to see it being replaced by The Chew is a slap in the face …We have lots of food shows to choose from and i dont watch any of them …If i want to cook i have a drawer full of cookbooks….I will never watch ABC again …I dont care what show they have on it or how good the ratings are on it …If they dont care enough about the soap viewers to leave our soaps on then i dont care if their network fells ….AMC has gotten me through a lot of bad times in my life ….When i worked i taped it and watched it on weekends …I have alot od the shows still on tapes and i dvr’d alot since io learnt it was going off and so i will just watch them and keep see my family cause that is what they are to me ….I would perfer they be on tv but if it goes online i will watch it there …How can you just put so many people out of Brian Frons …I hope u get what is coming to you and that is ABC firing u when their station goes down …Oh how i will laugh when that happens …..AMC i will miss u but i will always love you …Hope to see u online soon…

Frons is just a marionette whose strings are jerked and his mouth is operated by Iger & Sweeney two more jackasses!
They’ll never know the upset they caused with diehard and loyal soapfans. These people are hated more than any other people in the television industry.
Disney and ABC TV are banned in my house. The Disney parks can dry up and blow away. Not one cent of my money will ever go to supporting anything Disney!

Carol Burnett Talks About Being a Superfan of ‘All My Children’ on ‘Live with Kelly and Mark’

In a heartfelt reunion, of sorts, the one and only Carol Burnett appeared on Monday March 25th episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.

Burnett had first met Kelly Ripa (Hayley) and Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo) back when they all appeared on All My Children together. Carol played Verla Grubbs first in 1983 and then again in the 90’s.

Host Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, AMC) noted to Burnett that “we go back a long time”. She also described Burnett’s character of Verla Grubbs, “extraordinary in every way.”

Carol’s love for All My Children is well-documented, hence legendary soap creator, Agnes Nixon, created the role of Verla for Burnett.

Speaking on how her passion for All My Children began, Carol told Kelly and Mark, “It started with my kids. They would watch at noon. I said, ‘What are you guys doing?’ I sat down and I started to watch and I got hooked!”

When Carol’s family decided to travel through Europe during one summer, the comedic legend recalled thinking, “How am I going to last if I don’t know what’s going on in Pine Valley?” She revealed she had a friend, “who sent me a telegram to the (different hotels) on Fridays to bring me up to date.”

In a hilarious moment from the segment, Carol recalled receiving a late night telegram while in Lake Cuomo when there was a knock at her hotel room door from the hotel manager who was shaking.

Carol related what it said, “Erica is still in a coma. Mark slipped again and ran away from rehab.” As Kelly and Mark broke into laughter, Burnett continued, “Chuck has learned that Donna is carrying his baby, who was once a hooker.”

Check out Carol explaining how she became an AMC Superfan below.

Now, let us know, did you enjoy Carol as Verla Grubbs? What show do you consider yourself a Superfan of? Tell us in the comment section.

Malachy McCourt, ‘Ryan’s Hope’ and ‘All My Children’ Actor, Dead at 92

If you watched Ryan’s Hope through its 14-year-run, you know that Kevin the bartender became a beloved “member’ of the Ryan clan on the defunct ABC daytime drama series. The character of Kevin MacGuiness became so loved by the fans because of the actor who portrayed him, Malachy McCourt.

Sadly, according to his wife Diana McCourt to The New York Times, Malachy passed away on Monday from a heart condition and battling cancer. The actor was 92-years-old.

Playing Kevin on Ryan’s Hope was not much of a stretch for McCourt, because in his lifetime, he was the owner of 1950s Irish pub Malachy’s on Third Avenue in Manhattan. Known as one of the city’s great story-tellers, patrons from longshoremen to the actor Richard Harris would stop in and talk all things Irish with . On Ryan’s Hope, Kevin was best friends to “Ryan’s Bar” owner, Johnny Ryan (Bernie Barrow) and he tried to keep Delia (Ilene Kristen) on the straight and narrow.

In his soap opera career, McCourt also was widely-known for his role of Father Clarence McCourt on All My Children especially come Christmastime. Was Clarence, actually St. Nick? That was always the proverbial question. McCourt also appeared on the New York soaps: One Life To Live, Search For Tomorrow and Another World. Other roles included: Devil’s Own, Brewster’s Millions, The Molly Maguires, and Starman, to name

Later in 2006, Malachy ran for governor of the state of New York as a Green Party candidate. He tackled social issues of the time including being an advocate for gay and lesbian groups to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

McCourt’s childhood was recounted within his brother Frank McCourt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes, which detailed their mother’s attempt to raise the four of their surviving seven children in poverty in Limerick, Ireland. Later, Malachy wrote his own memoirs: 1998’s Monk Swimming, and 2000’s Singing My Him Song.

Malachy is survived by his aforementioned wife, Diana, daughter Siobhan McCourt; sons Malachy Jr., Conor and Cormac; stepdaughter Nina Galin; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
