With a very heavy heart On-Air On-Soaps has to report that today, ABC has now officially canceled both All My Children and One Life to Live!

ABC is confirming what has been rumored for weeks: All My Children and One Life to Live will end their storied runs in September 2011 and January 2012, respectively. They will be replaced by  talk shows, the food-themed The Chew and makeover-themed The Revolution.”

ABC Daytime head honcho, Brian Frons, released this statement, “While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can’t help but recognize how bittersweet the change is. We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways. All My Children and One Life to Live are iconic pieces of television that have made an indelible mark on our culture’s history. Each of the shows has touched millions and millions of viewers and informed the social consciousness. It has been a privilege to work with the extraordinary teams who brought the residents of Pine Valley and Llanview to life each day, and we thank the cast, crew, producers and most especially the fans for their commitment to the shows through their history.”

ABC EVOLVES THE FACE OF DAYTIME TELEVISION WITH THE LAUNCH OF TWO NEW SHOWS, “THE CHEW” AND “THE REVOLUTION”

Iconic Shows “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” Will Broadcast Their Final Episodes in September 2011 and January 2012, Respectively; Series Will Sunset in a Manner That Honors Viewers and the Shows’ Creative Legacies

Guided by extensive research into what today’s daytime viewers want and the changing viewing patterns of the audience, ABC is evolving the face of daytime television with the launch of two new shows, “The Chew,” which will premiere in September 2011, and “The Revolution” (working title), which will premiere in January 2012. These new shows expand ABC Daytime’s focus to include more programming that is informative and authentic and centers on transformation, food and lifestyle — cornerstones of programming that resonates with daytime viewers as evidenced by the success of “The View.”

As food has become the center of everyone’s life, “The Chew” will focus on food from EVERY angle — as a source of joy, health, family ritual, friendship, breaking news, dating, fitness, weight loss, travel adventures and life’s moments. Produced by Gordon Elliot, the Emmy Award-winning executive producer of “Paula Deen’s Home Cooking” and “Down Home with the Neelys,” this new one-hour series combines entertaining takeaway with memorable personalities to create a live show where viewers get the dish on anything and everything related to the world of food and beyond. Whether it’s new trends like food trucks and urban gardens or how pesticides in our food may affect our health, we can’t stop talking about it. The hosts who will guide the hour include Mario Batali (Restaurateur, Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” and author); entertaining expert Clinton Kelly (TLC’s “What Not to Wear”); Carla Hall (Bravo’s “Top Chef”); Michael Symon (Restaurateur and Food Network’s “Iron Chef America”), and nutrition expert Daphne Oz, who simplifies often confusing information about food.

From Executive Producer JD Roth and 3 Ball Productions, producers of “The Biggest Loser,” “Masterchef” and ABC’s upcoming “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition,” comes “The Revolution,” a daily show about health and lifestyle transformations. The show is hosted by a team of experts and rotating guest contributors who help viewers transform all areas of their lives, from relationships to family, food, style, home design, finance and more. This dream team, led by fashion expert Tim Gunn, also includes celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak and American Idol alum Kimberley Locke. The show features a unique concept: each week one woman’s five-month weight loss journey will unfold in just five days, with daily results and a final transformational reveal on Friday. “The Revolution” is a one-stop shop for better living.

“While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can’t help but recognize how bittersweet the change is,” said Brian Frons, President, Daytime, Disney ABC/Television Group. “We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways. A perfect example of this is ‘The View,’ and that factored into our decision. ‘The Chew’ and ‘The Revolution’ are in the same vein and will be great additions to the lineup, with ‘The View’ serving as an ideal foundation from which to launch these programs. They will also provide enormous opportunity for the creation of ancillary businesses and growth.”

“General Hospital,” the second-most popular show in daytime, is not impacted by this announcement and will remain on the air.

To honor the core, passionate audience and their rich history with our soaps, “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” will conclude each series in a manner that respects their legacies and the longstanding hopes of many of their viewers.

“‘All My Children’ and ‘One Life to Live’ are iconic pieces of television that have made an indelible mark on our culture’s history,” reflected Frons. “Each of the shows has touched millions and millions of viewers and informed the social consciousness. It has been a privilege to work with the extraordinary teams who brought the residents of Pine Valley and Llanview to life each day, and we thank the cast, crew, producers and most especially the fans for their commitment to the shows through their history.”

None of this could have been possible without the extraordinary Agnes Nixon. “More than 40 years ago, Agnes Nixon created both the worlds of ‘All My Children’ and ‘One Life to Live,’ worlds that the rest of us have been privileged to live in,” said Frons. “Her shows led the way forward, breaking a lot of rules along the way to defy expectations about what soaps can do and the issues they can cover.
I am honored to have worked with her.”

“All My Children” has revolved around the lives of the residents of fictional Pine Valley, a town which closely resembles the Philadelphia Main Line. “All My Children” took home the 1998 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, the third time the show received this top honor, having also garnered the award in 1994 and 1992. “All My Children” has received more than 30 Emmy Awards and consistently distinguishes itself in the field of daytime drama. The show has historically been committed to and is often the first to tackle social issues, focusing on such topics as AIDS, abortion, cochlear implants, teenage alcoholism, racial bias, acquaintance rape, spousal abuse, homosexuality, Reyes syndrome, Vietnam MIAs, drug abuse, the risks of motherhood over 40, safe sex, pet therapy and organ donations, among others. The show made television history airing daytime television’s first same-sex kiss between two lesbian characters, as well as daytime television’s first same sex wedding between two women. It was the first to chronicle the coming-out story of a transgender woman and to cast a real life Iraq War veteran whose story reflected his real life experiences and injuries incurred in combat.

“All My Children” premiered on the ABC Television Network on January 5, 1970, as a half-hour show; seven years later it expanded to an hour. Julie Hanan Carruthers is executive producer.

Also created by Agnes Nixon, Emmy Award-winning “One Live to Live” is set in the fictional town of Llanview, which is modeled on a Philadelphia suburb. “One Life to Live” debuted on The ABC Television Network July 15, 1968 as a half-hour show. Ten years later, it grew to a full hour in 1978.

“One Life to Live” has been lauded for its groundbreaking exploration of social issues, diverse canvas, award-winning performances and innovative storylines. Along with the history-making week of live shows in May 2002, “One Life to Live” is responsible for many “firsts” in Daytime television, including stories of interracial romance, illiteracy, medical misdiagnosis, racial prejudice, gang violence and teen pregnancy. The show received mass critical acclaim for its 1992 homophobia storyline, which captured national headlines when it introduced the character of a gay teen (played by then unknown Ryan Phillippe) and culminated with the emotional display of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. “One Life to Live” was honored by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) with the Outstanding Daytime Drama Award in 1993, and again in 2005 and 2010.

In 2002 the show won its first-ever Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, and was nominated again in 2007 and 2008. Created by Agnes Nixon, “One Life to Live” debuted on July 15, 1968 and marked its 10,000th episode on August 17, 2007. Frank Valentini executive-produces.”

Oh my God! One Life to Live is at it’s all-time best, and All My Children still has some life in it, too. We will have continued coverage throughout the day, and the days ahead on this seismic shift on the daytime canvas! Fans, please let you outrage and voice be heard here in this post!

Let’s hope this is a rude awakening for Ken Corday. I would hate to see Days go by the wayside too. The writing team needs changed now!

If Ken Corday was smart he’d hire “One Life to Live’s” brilliant head writer pronto!!!!!

If Ken Corday was smart he’d put EJAMI together and forget the boring EJOLE and the awful SAFE that have contributed to the shows last place ratings for a few weeks now.

I have no interest in another food or talk show. So now I will have 2 more free hours to watch movies, work on my astrology, work on my geneology and things I want to do. So in a backhanded way Thank you Abc, Frons for giving me two more hours of free time.

I have been watching the show since it started, I think that we should all “boycott” the network! I don’t think that these new shows will fly, I know I won’t watch them if they do air them. I want my OLTL to continue as it has been for the past 43 years.
Boycot the network! Boycot the network! Boycot the network! Boycot the network! Boycot the network! Boycot the network! Boycot the network! Boycot the network! Boycot the network! Boycot the network!

who can i write to about cancelling these two famous tv show’s? i’ve been watching these tv shows for a while and now they want to cancel them. Oh hell no, what is their problem. If anyone comes up with the address, etc, please hit me up on my email. thanks

We have food tv for cooking shows. FOX….please pick up these shows and do them right!!!! I cannot imagine TV with out my OLTL. Completely shocked that this is going to improve ratings. Save the $$ entirely and air reruns of Bewitched, not new insulting showes to replace OLTL!

or reruns of Hart to Hart.

or reruns of golden oldies like Art Linkletter, Queen For A Day, Galloping Gourmet and Virginia Graham. These shows were alot better than the AMC & OLTL replacements could ever be.

No reruns please! Too easy for these guys. Let them air these new shows and have them Fail. If I see another show on cooking, nutrition,
etc,etc….. I will scream. I want to watch a story being told, romance & mystery, and generational family mischief and mayham .. I want my OLTL to stay on the air! Shame on you ABC !!

So how is that Hope and Change working out for soap viewers and actors? Who needs another mindless talk show at least with the soaps you knew it was story telling this to me is very sad even though I have not watched AMC in years more people out of work just not the way this country was founded. I will now get off my soap box!!! Pardon the pun!

I am very sad that Mr. Brian Frons thinks food and heath shows is what people want. No it is not. Soap fans want Love and Romance not bombs and bullets. Bad storytelling is why the ratings are failing. Mr. Frons solution after he and his ABC executives have messed the soaps up is to cancel them. Fire HIM!

The Chew should be renamed The Chew & Puke.

Such a travesty. AMC moved from NY to LA at a great expense to both the network and the actors and crew all the time ABC/Disney deniying cancellation rumors up until the last few days. I hope all that had to make the sacrifices of uprooting themselves, selling homes and making a very expensive move will sue Disney/ABC.

I cannot say that AMC news shocked me, but OLTL has been rocking it lately and considering that they are known for staying in budget I thought it had a few more years of life.

I’m a GH watcher and gotta say that the young talent on there needs to seriously consider not renewing their contracts when up and getting out while they can. I’m afraid that GH will be lucky if it has another 5 years given that it doesn’t appear that ABC wants to update the genre or make storylines relevant….and then blame declining ratings on the fact that viewers no longer want soaps. Its a very sad day indeed.

I feel like I just found out a loved one died. I don’t even watch AMC or OLTL, but they were always around, since I was born. Like chicken noodle soup when your sick, or mac and cheese anytime, the comfort will soon be gone. DONT EVEN TOUCH GH!!!!!

You are right they better not even think about messing with GH. That would be a big mistake too many fans love the bad boys !!!!

I am stunned! That’s all we need -more cooking & makeover shows. I think that’s why there’s HGTV & Bravo. I stopped watching CBS when they cancelled ATWT. I guess when the shows are gone I will not be watching ABC. It’s sad that real actors cannot get work because it’s cheaper to have reality tv. I will really miss these shows .

Sad day for soaps. It’s the end of an era. Sad for everyone that will be out of a job and for all soap fans who have been watching for 10, 20, 30 years and on.

Well, I guess there really won’t be any reason to watch the ABC network anymore except for 1 hour each day. I won’t ever invest my time in another of their primetime shows since they always cancel the ones I end up watching, so my only reason to turn on ABC will be for 1 hour of GH a day, until that gets canceled and then I’ll be free of ABC forever. If they think that soap fans are going to watch their stupid talk show and cooking show, they are wrong.

I can’t believe they did this. They need to look at management and the writting. The fans are there, but I know they wont be around to watch a food show and weight lose show, or at least I know I wont. They should have made Frons leave a long time ago. I feel so bad for the actors and actresses.

One question, Michael. Has ABC lost their minds? I don’t want another Reality, talk or game show. I use Soaps to escape my reality to focus on other people fictional realiities for a couple of hours. This is a really bad decision on ABC’s part. I am highly disappointed in ABC. I guess once there is a steep drop in daytime viewership, ABC will be forced to realize that the viewers are the ones that really matter. The Death of Daytimes Begins Today.

Susan- I agree. This is horrible. They listened to viewers that are “looking for different types of programming these days?” Really? Who are you polling? The only issue fans have with soaps these days are the writing. “They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways?” Reality shows are becoming more and more drivel every day. I love my cooking shows, but if I want to watch it, I’ll turn on Food Network. AND another show about how I should change who I am. If I wanted to lose weight, change my attire, or get a makeover, I’d turn on Bravo. You dropped the bomb on this one Frons. Will I boycott ABC. Not for one hour- because I will continue to support GH. But, know this execs, your cesspool of mail just got a LOT larger with my disdain for your actions against OLTL and AMC.

I agree. I’ve watched Susan Lucci and Erica Kane grow up on this show.
OLTL I watched Alderson and Star grow up.

Shame on you ABC and Disney.

Can’t you see it? The line-up for every channel soon will be loud talk shows, make-over shows, judge shows, and other trash tv. They are going to give us a steady diet of “Charlie Sheen” type airings- the equivalent of “fast food” for tv. With quick little sound bites to make us feel compelled to look- like passing emergency vehicles. Fortunately, other than for GH, I won’t have the channel on at all- and not even because I’d be boycotting, but rather because I am just not interested, so I won’t see the sound bites. I used to watch Guiding Light, and As the World Turns. I don’t even know what they were replaced with.

All of think of right now is Brian frons slammed Jeff Zucker for saying that DAYS would be cancelled back in 2008 instead he(Frons) has killed two soaps while DAYS is still on the air.

I am totally PO’d by this awful news!

They should keep the shows on in web format for the faithful followers & to give the actors a little more work!!!!

I feel really bad for the people on those soaps I thought maybe one would go but not two at once. I’ve always liked OLTL and will really miss it, has some of my fav soap characters on that one. AMC is sad because they just had all that moving upheaval.

I wish them all well but wow that’s a lot of ppl out of work at one time.

Fire Brian Frons, not the cast and crew of two shows. He would be much easier to replace. Maybe he could be replaced with a food showl

Great idea! You are so right! Let the food show be Frons’ undoing, better yet his firing!!!

The Chew & Puke show starring B.Frons.

FRANS YOU ARE FULL OF SHIT. WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER TALKSHOW ABOUT FOOD AND FASHION! YOU ARE KILLING SOAPS! IF YOU HAD YOUR WAY GH WILL BE NEXT.

BRING BACK OUR SOAPS!!!!!!

GLAD YOU CAN’T TOUCH OUR GH WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? GUESS YOU LIKE FOOD MORE THAN YOU CARE ABOUT WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT!

A sad day indeed. When CBS cancelled both ATWT & GL, I made it my goal to never tune in to what replaced it. I never have. Now ABC cancels AMC &OLTL and replaces them with a weight-loss program and a cooking show to replace the weight lost. It will make it very easy to never tune into such stupid programming.

With those two lead-ins, GH won’t be far behind. I bet the ratings will dip significantly from what the AMC adn OLTL timeslots already pull in. I wonder what “research” told them to cancel the soaps and replace them with a show called “The Chew”? With moves like these, no wonder ABC has not been atop ratings races in any daypart. Time for the ABC Daytime staff to be cancelled and replaced. Monkeys can make better decisions.

From the moment Fronslime took over ABC daytime it has been doomed. I have watched both of these shows from the very first day. I can’t believe there isn’t one person there with a brain!!!!

This is just wrong canceling All My Children and One Life To LIve, Who need 2 stupid food shows> They need to keep these soaps on. General Hospital need to be cancel to. That soap opera sucks big time, It is the most stupidest soap on t.v. I hate that soap with passion, CANCEL GENERAL HOSPITAL NOW.

No, I think they got it right with All My Children. I enjoy watching One Life To Live AND General Hospital. So, it is true when they say to each his own.

GH IS BETTER I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOUR LOOKING AT ! BUT IF YOU CAN SEE YOU KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF HOTTTTTT GUYS ON THERE. I SUGGEST YOU GO AND GET AN EYE EXAM ASAP !

ALL MY CHILDREN AND ONE LIFE TO LIVE HAVE A LOT OF HOT GUYS ON THERE. GENERAL HOSPITAL DOESN’T. SO I DON’T NEED MY EYES CHECK. YOU NEED YOUR EYES CHECK ASAP.

GENERAL HOSPITAL SUCKS BIG TIME.

Well in that case we still see that GH is still on the air and hopefully will stay like that for a really long time ! : )

It really saddens me to think of a future with no love in the afternoons. I may be in the minority but I am over the reality TV deluge. Reality isn’t always entertaining. So what will these shows do? They will create drama, maybe do some scripted scenes. Because people want the drama but people also want the escape. In my 20 years of soap viewing I have enjoyed almost every twist and turn ABC Daytime has given me. I have taped, TiVo’d, and watched late night on SoapNet when necessary. It has been an absolutel privilage to watch these shows and I am deeply saddened to think of a TiVo without them. And upon hearing reports that the media was notified before the casts, all I can say is, Shame on You, Brian Frons. Not only have you had Susan Lucci and all AMC powers tht be “reassuring” AMC was safe, which we now know as a HUGE lie, you didn’t even have enough respect for your employees to inform them properly. And OLTL is at it’s finest right, now. But my final question would be, why is GH safe? It’s no shinning star in the ratings.

PEOPLE LOVE THE DANGER AND THE BAD BOYS !

Pissed would be putting it mildly, in hearing this news. All those people, the cast, crew, directors, producers out of jobs and for what? 2 more useless reality shows??? Well ABC, they say actions speak louder than words, so while I will continue watching GH, I am boycotting all other ABC shows, including the ABC Family network and all their other affiliates. I’m in your demographic and no one asked me my opinion on the matter. I hope those shows fail and fail miserably.

I can’t believe they are taking OLTL off! AMC I understand a bit more. I will not be watching their new shows. OMG!

I don’t even what to say right now. I’m pretty numb. I’ve watched both AMC and OLTL at one point. But OLTL was my baby. I started watching when I was 12 and the main reason I kept watching was because of the talent that is Erika Slezak. My heart aches so much for the veteran actors like Erika because she has given 40 years to OLTL and for what? It’s going to be over in just a few months, it is so sickening to me. OLTL has been doing so well out of the three soaps as of late and it is a shame. I honestly hope that the same won’t happen to GH. It has been a bit rough as of late and it would be such a shame to lose GH too. I wish OLTL and AMC cast and crew the best of luck in the future. And I for one will not be tuning into the replacements of AMC and OLTL.

I cant believe they cancelled both. OLTL is one of the only soaps gaining viewers. Its a damn shame, a lot of talented people out of work and a lot of disapointed fans. OLTL is the last of the classic soaps, it hooked me right after ATWT bit the dust. AMC has been in trouble for a while but do they really think everyone wants to watch talk shows and reality television?

This is sad news. After ATWT I’ve been trying to find a soap I could love. But thank God I didn’t yet.it’s so sad but it seems like the day of the soaps is coming to an end. Can’t somebody do something?

Just an extremely devastating day for this soap opera (especially OLTL) fan. I don’t even have the words to express how sad this news makes me feel. Well, except to say that I will NEVER watch anything ABC decides to air in the place of a soap opera. Luckily, I think that the soap opera creators and executives are smart enough to see that millions of fans now have a void that needs to be filled and will do something so that the genre will survive (maybe just not in the exact same form). I sure hope ABC is really feeling the backlash from this awful decision.

I would like to know where they took a survey? From people that don’t watch TV during the day. I’m tired of shows telling me what to eat and how to tranform my life, There’s plenty of them on now if that is what you want to watch. Trust me I won’t watch anything you replace them with!!!!!

I really feel for the actors. OLTL was the first soap I started watching. That led me to AMC. I was the only one in my family that watched consistently but everyone in my family knew who Erica Kane was.

R.I.P OLTL & AMC

Why doesn’t somebody create a new soap network that can pick up all of them along with the web soaps and have them available on TV and web and other?

Well you what they will find out if they see a drop in any of the shows even the nightime viewing drops. If people can really do it and not watch the night time show. And they see a start of dropping in the viewing numbers for what they have done.I am not sure if that would work but it could just open there eyes to what they have done.Come on here they moved the one from New York to Califorina what has it been maybe just a year ago. Then they go and do this for they think it will be cheaper to product these type of show then it is to product a Soap Opeara.Get real people I find it shocking that they could even do this at all.I mean one of the most love soaps and her Susan Lucci said it right on the Rachael Ray show that it wasn’t going to happen. So what did they give them there pink slips just last week and then decided to annoc it today. That is a sad day I mean here they were bring people back for a show they were even keeping that is the stupid idea even do that. When you think your coming back to show and then the next thing you know it gets kick in the a** for just so they can produced lower cost shows.Well then get ready for blackball your network for this kind of thing.

I am very very sadden by this horrible news!!!!!!!!! Those other talk shows on TV we don’t need! Who cares!!!! I’m very very very upset about this!!!!!!!!!!!! I will miss those two soap opera’s for the rest of my life!!!!!!!! To me it’s like a death in the family . The actors were part of my best friends that came into my living room everynite. I just adored them. This is just not fair!!!!!!!!! I’m very upset about all this as I said before and I am sure alot of other fans are also!!!!!!!!!!!

More talk shows – WTF?
I think that the writing on OLTL is currently the best of the ABC soaps (and I was a diehard GH fan for decades), so this really a crappy move. One of the many things I have always appreciated about soaps was the commitment to creativity on a daily basis. Producing an original product day after day is not an easy task. And I appreciated the effort. I work, but I still made time for these characters on a regular basis. It’s nice to escape to the familiarity and comfort of these characters and their storylines. I’m very disappointed that ABC has given up the rich lives of these characters, to bring us more “reality” based programming (like TV isn’t over-saturated with enough of that already).

This is sad…TERRIBLE! this isnt just ABC its DISNEY! and they’re making a BIG MISTAKE! Daytime Soaps are an american tradition and pop culture staple! People who arent even necessarily soaps fans know who SUSAN LUCCI/ERIKA KANE is.This is NOT a reflection of what the viewers want this is about them trying to find ways to make a fast buck pandering to a younger audience with cheap, stupid shows that wont last even HALF the length of time AMC &OLTL have lasted. What can we do to try to help save these shows!?

I am shocked that All My Children and One Life to Live is going off the air. I am a disabled viewer that looked forward each day spending sometime time viewing the soaps and not thinking about my own life. I am heart broken that all those great actors and actress will be put out of work. With the shape that this country is in today you all should be ashamed of yourself for letting the viewers down and ALL the PEOPLE WORKING for OLTL & AMC all those families out of work. My heart goes out to them. ABC has now lost ALL my viewing as of today! God Bless to all the PEOPLE out of work!

I have ALWAYS hated when people said soaps were dying…soap operas are not dying, they have been butchered and murdered by the people who run them, everyone from the shoddy writers to various network executives.

I pray that Ken Corday will hire “One Life to Live’s” writing team and try to salvage “Days of Our Lives”and show Dena Higley the unemployment line !!!!!!

I am sick to my stomach, disgusted, and furious with the a-holes in charge! I don’t think they could be more out of touch with what daytime viewers want. What a “screw you” to everyone in the soap community, especially the cast and crew! Nobody wants to watch more talk shows and TAIC don’t even GAS. What an insensitive “press release” too. May everyone responsible for the cancellations of GL, ATWT, AMC, and OLTL get what’s coming to them. I believe in karma – I just pray to the soap Gods that it comes back on them in spades!

Apparently no one learned from the Jay Leno fiasco. I think they may end up with egg on their face too.

What a sad day in history. Growing up in a home where my Mother worked from home, ABC soaps were always on in the background. When I was in school, I “kept up” with them through my Mom. As an adult, I watch episodes online – maybe not every day, but I keep up as best I can. I can’t imagine a time when these two lovely soaps, that I have watched since I was a little girl, won’t be accessible. My heart is broken – not just for myself and all the thousands upon thousands of other fans, but for the lovely and deeply talented actors and actresses who work tirelessly to entertain us every day. You are amazing human beings who will be blessed in your further endeavors. I wish each and every one of you love, success and happiness! Bless you all. XO

In my first “experiment” w/ soaps, I watched AMC for a couple of years in the early 80s. I came back for GL and Otalia…then boom, cancellation. I watch DooL for Crystal Chappell, and then tried OLTL for Jessica Leccia. While neither of those shows is Guiding Light, it’s still a damn shame to lose AMC and OLTL. A damn shame.

Like I have said on the other sites reporting this. This is the stupidest thing ABC has done. I hope there is a way to stop this, or otherwise, Frons is going to get the opposite of what he expecting.

I deeply saddened by this news . Unfortunately, I am afraid all soaps are in jeopardy. I have watched DOOL for over 40 yrs and had watched OLTL and AMC off and on as well.

I feel badly for all these amazing actors who will be affected by this decision. Soap actors, in general, are some of the best actors out today. I pray this is the last cancellation we soap fans will have to experience.

Oh God this is such distressing and depressing news…I haven’t watched AMC in years AND just started to watch OLTL again when it was rumored and now confirmed that Roger Howarth was coming back to the show -what just to say Adios to all the loyal viewers….I just want to cry.
I was a daytime ‘junkie’ through my mid-teens to my thirties ….watched ALL the ABC daytime dramas.
I was there for the demise of the BELOVED Ryan’s Hope and Loving/The City.
But like many working moms I got very busy over the years and Daytime just fell by the wayside….it was something I MIGHT watch on a day off or if I was home sick.
Now the kids are grown and I’m still a working mom -but I have more me time to devote to the things I like.
Re-investing time in OLTL was one of those things.
I have NO interest in the ‘described NEW shows’.
I don’t watch ‘REALITY’ TV…I like CNN News and AC 360 even tho I’m Canadian.
OLTL and Y&R for that matter are my escapist pleasures from the daily grind.
Thank God I’ll at least get to watch OLTL til it’s demise in January….then I may go into therapy, carry on the love affair via YouTube or start a Blog.
But right now I just want to cry me a river….pass the box of tissues PLEASE !!

This is sad news. However, is anyone really surprised by this? For me, the real blow was the cancellation of ATWT, a show that needed some improvement in the writing but, unlike the others, had a significant number of veteran characters played by the same actors. ATWT had a lot of life left in it when it was cancelled. Once the decision was made to cancel this still viable show, it is no shock that others would quickly go down the same path.

The likely future of these shows is pretty obvious: In 5 years, we will be lucky if BOTH GH and Y&R are still on the air with DAYS and B&B dead. Clearly, soap operas are expensive and do not make a lot of financial sense with their dwindling ratings. The only thing that I can imagine would save them would be a creative executive who found a way to keep the cost down and a more welcoming broadcaster for a show and (more unlikely) writers who could create compelling, original storylines based on the characters and the history.

It really is NOT the fault of the networks that these shows are dying. The writing for everyone of them has been unoriginal and uninspiring for several years. (The shows themselves appear to have ignored this. How many times have I read about some writer or producer who has failed on one show quickly being hired for another one?) The ratings have plunged and the profit-driven networks are doing what any sound business would do — cutting a costly and money losing operation.

I have always liked daytime serials and am saddened by this news. However, it is not unexpected.

no not surprised but its like a death that you know is inevitable, you know its coming but when it does you feel like your heart has been ripped out of your chest……….

Are you kidding me !!!!!!! More talk show crap and food whatever shows !!!!! Can not believe all my children and one life to live is being cancelled….ABC you just cancelled me and I am sure many other viewers !!!!!! It is just wrong !!!!!!!

A sad, sad day. Between all the cooking, talk and reality shows, I don’t watch much TV anymore Seems they always take off the good drama and put on more junk. NOT INTERESTED.

Boycott all things Disney. I hate to give up Modern Family, but I will tune to any other channel. After Oltl is gone, so am I. It has been improving in the ratings, comes in under budget, beats the Talk. What else do they want. Bad decision. I hope the new shows fail wtremendously. Gh is pretty unwatchable. I have watched oltl since 1985. I am so angry. It is a quality show. Roger Howarts return calmed my fears…..but what a shock. Now I know how all of the CBS fans felt.

I am one of those CBS fans that was devastated when GL and ATWT were cancelled. My family invested MANY years in those soaps (third generation) and after they were gone I started watching OLTL and now it will be gone. I REFUSE to invest ANY time in another soap. So NO GH for me and I’ve watched Y&R for years and DOOL off and on for years, but their story lines don’t change much. So GOOD BYE ABC, CBS and NBC during the day, I will watch other shows from the satellite during the day. To the execs at those networks……….. :-p

I promise that I will boycott all shows on ABC & Disney if they go thru with this & cancel OLTL or AMC.

Carol Burnett Talks About Being a Superfan of ‘All My Children’ on ‘Live with Kelly and Mark’

In a heartfelt reunion, of sorts, the one and only Carol Burnett appeared on Monday March 25th episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.

Burnett had first met Kelly Ripa (Hayley) and Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo) back when they all appeared on All My Children together. Carol played Verla Grubbs first in 1983 and then again in the 90’s.

Host Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, AMC) noted to Burnett that “we go back a long time”. She also described Burnett’s character of Verla Grubbs, “extraordinary in every way.”

Carol’s love for All My Children is well-documented, hence legendary soap creator, Agnes Nixon, created the role of Verla for Burnett.

Speaking on how her passion for All My Children began, Carol told Kelly and Mark, “It started with my kids. They would watch at noon. I said, ‘What are you guys doing?’ I sat down and I started to watch and I got hooked!”

When Carol’s family decided to travel through Europe during one summer, the comedic legend recalled thinking, “How am I going to last if I don’t know what’s going on in Pine Valley?” She revealed she had a friend, “who sent me a telegram to the (different hotels) on Fridays to bring me up to date.”

In a hilarious moment from the segment, Carol recalled receiving a late night telegram while in Lake Cuomo when there was a knock at her hotel room door from the hotel manager who was shaking.

Carol related what it said, “Erica is still in a coma. Mark slipped again and ran away from rehab.” As Kelly and Mark broke into laughter, Burnett continued, “Chuck has learned that Donna is carrying his baby, who was once a hooker.”

Check out Carol explaining how she became an AMC Superfan below.

Malachy McCourt, ‘Ryan’s Hope’ and ‘All My Children’ Actor, Dead at 92

If you watched Ryan’s Hope through its 14-year-run, you know that Kevin the bartender became a beloved “member’ of the Ryan clan on the defunct ABC daytime drama series. The character of Kevin MacGuiness became so loved by the fans because of the actor who portrayed him, Malachy McCourt.

Sadly, according to his wife Diana McCourt to The New York Times, Malachy passed away on Monday from a heart condition and battling cancer. The actor was 92-years-old.

Playing Kevin on Ryan’s Hope was not much of a stretch for McCourt, because in his lifetime, he was the owner of 1950s Irish pub Malachy’s on Third Avenue in Manhattan. Known as one of the city’s great story-tellers, patrons from longshoremen to the actor Richard Harris would stop in and talk all things Irish with . On Ryan’s Hope, Kevin was best friends to “Ryan’s Bar” owner, Johnny Ryan (Bernie Barrow) and he tried to keep Delia (Ilene Kristen) on the straight and narrow.

In his soap opera career, McCourt also was widely-known for his role of Father Clarence McCourt on All My Children especially come Christmastime. Was Clarence, actually St. Nick? That was always the proverbial question. McCourt also appeared on the New York soaps: One Life To Live, Search For Tomorrow and Another World. Other roles included: Devil’s Own, Brewster’s Millions, The Molly Maguires, and Starman, to name

Later in 2006, Malachy ran for governor of the state of New York as a Green Party candidate. He tackled social issues of the time including being an advocate for gay and lesbian groups to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

McCourt’s childhood was recounted within his brother Frank McCourt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes, which detailed their mother’s attempt to raise the four of their surviving seven children in poverty in Limerick, Ireland. Later, Malachy wrote his own memoirs: 1998’s Monk Swimming, and 2000’s Singing My Him Song.

Malachy is survived by his aforementioned wife, Diana, daughter Siobhan McCourt; sons Malachy Jr., Conor and Cormac; stepdaughter Nina Galin; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
