Crystal Chappell Posts Blog After Communicating with Melissa Reeves on Chick-fil-A Twitter Controversy!

Venice, The Grove, and The Bold and the Beautiful’s, Crystal Chappell has posted in her latest V-Blog today about the Chick-fil-A controversy and the infamous tweet made by her former Days of our Lives co-star Melissa Reeves (Jennifer).

Chappell wanted to point out (through her post to fans and the LGBT community) that Reeves is not a bigot or a bully, and that her intent on the tweet (that has gotten the actress in a heap of trouble) was supporting freedom of speech, and not knowing about the motives behind Chick-fil-A supporting Anti-Gay hate groups. Chappell did communicate with Reeves to get some clarification.  Here is an excerpt of what Crystal posted this morning:

Crystal Chappell: “I reached out to our gay and married friends. Missy had called them in tears soon after the shit hit the fan. She told them how much she loved them and that the implication of that tweet was not what she intended. She said she saw half a tweet about Cluck Filet and thought she was supporting Free Speech. Nothing more. I thought…OK. Um….twitter fuck up? I’ve stepped into twitter convoys without really knowing what was being talked about and made a mess for myself unintentionally. Realizing after I stepped into it that I don’t at all support the person’s words I stood up for. OK….it happens. And then I asked our gay and married friends…well, why not just say that to the folks in twitter land? Was someone telling her not to? Is it work related? Ostrich in the sand syndrome? If I don’t see it, it doesn’t exist kind of thing? Blonde moment? The more time went by the more frustrated I and my friends became. It started to hurt. We all know Missy has very strong religious beliefs but the person we know and love….is NOT a bigot.

I reached out to Missy and she responded several days later. She’s decided to not speak out and hope that the people who know her will trust that she didn’t intend to support an anti-gay corporation. I firmly believe she should speak…not only for the fans but for her friends. I read Greg Riikart’s article in the Huffington Post. I thought it was eloquent and spot on…with the exception of calling Melissa Reeves a bully. Although, I understand where it came from. Sometimes being too quiet after creating a shit storm can make you look more guilty. So, Ill pray that she speaks so you can know that person who has a genuine love for all people regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation.”

Well…I loved this post. Sometimes things are not as black and white as they seem. I do agree, Melissa should clarify.

Too bad Crystal Chappell needed to throw a hat in the ring for Reeves, she dug her own hole, and the fact SHE is not actively responding shows exactly where she stands.

Amen–Reeves knew full well what she was supporting and now she’s backtracking after the fallout.I will NEVER watch any program with her in it or purchase any products she endorses.I’m sick of the hatred toward gay people,all they want is equal rights.

You don’t know anything about Missy Reeves. How do you know she doesn’t have a friend who owns a Chick-Fil-a and she was simply supporting her friend’s livelihood? Missy does not need to clarify herself, because no matter what she says, SOMEBODY is going to take offense. If she aligns herself with the LGBT, her CHRISTIAN fans will be mad. Don’t you get it? She never should have made that tweet, but now that it’s done, there is nothing she can say that will please EVERYBODY. Stop expecting everybody to have the same opinion on everything.

Oh, Maddie, stop inventing things like imaginary friends who own Chick-fil-as! Thing is, she didn’t have to align herself with ANYONE. She could have kept quiet. No one would have known.

She made the comment. She is a public figure and accountable for her words and the fallout. All the “judging” “judge much” comments that get thrown around when people voice their opinions confuses me. Where was this stupid womans good judgement when she tweeted to her fanbase? She knew exactly what she was doing, come on. Its called collaboration. She put supported Chick-Fil-A and their hateful values by using her celebrity. People did that during WWII too, and they have been tried as Nazi-Collaborators or contributors. Different era. Different celebrity. Same hate.

I’m beginning to think that the definition that some people use for the word “tolerance” is that means we have to agree with their point of view, otherwise you’re called all sorts of names to shame you into accepting the point of view, or at least into silence.

So, folks, how about starting to be tolerant of people like Missy Reeves instead of bullying them into silence?

Why should Missy have to defend herself at all? They’re her beliefs, you don’t agree with them, and she doesn’t have to answer to anyone for them.

I am a gay Christian man, and I am honestly repulsed by the ugliness and the vitriol of the gay community because someone says that they don’t believe what they believe. What is really sad is that the gay community is letting this issue define them. The self-righteous ugliness that is being spewed is only polarizing people more. I would be more outraged about gay brothers and sisters in other countries being slaughtered by those who engage in “a religion of peace” and demand our nation’s leaders to cut off funding to any nation who engages in it. But hey, Christians are easy targets and they are parodied endlessly on TV shows, including the soaps, because it’s the cool thing in the media. It’s really sickening. Why aren’t the same angry people picketing mosques?

The Ability or Willingness. which tells me… we know what is good, in our hearts.. we are born this way…. and propaganda… testing one’s faith… is willingness to evil.

@Jim, you’re pointing fingers and lumping ALL gay people together. As a gay person this is the LAST thing you should be doing — and as a Christian you should know that the words and actions of one are NOT the words and actions of ALL. Do you not know you are doing what you accuse others of? Are you more Christian than gay? I wonder why you can’t balance the two? Worst of all, do you not know that people posting here have repeatedly expressed concern about gays being killed in other countries. We CANNOT protest in foreign countries, but we should not have to be condemned in our OWN country — the place of our birth. To my knowledge, no Muslim mosques in the US are openly going after gays. BTW your post was all over the place, and I tried to answer to the best of my ability given that.

nothing harder, Jim, than being a gay Christian, lol, of course, I know where your FIRST loyalty lies, and that is to Christ and your fellow believers. I know somebody like you (it might even BE you! lol), and he supported Chick-fil-A. If this boycott succeeded, “they” would start coming after every other Christian, this is nothing less than religious persecution (especially once the Mayors of major cities started throwing their weight around). We have to stand up to the “bullies”. I believe that is what Melissa was trying to do, as well.

No, Maddy, my loyalty first lies in calling stuff out for what it is. There’s enough hypocrisy on both sides of this controversy and there’s more than enough narrow minded bigotry and hate to go around. The fact is that the media has been persecuting Christians for years in TV and in film. It’s “chic” to do that. They are portrayed as bigoted, ignorant and clueless. Where’s the same treatment of Muslims? Where’s the gay outrage for a religion that believes that gay men should actually be killed. Where’s the outrage directed at the Council of Islamic Relations? Where’s the call for repudiation of the Muslim Brotherhood? When Christians say stupid things, I call them out on it. When Republicans do stupid things, I call them out on it. I stand with Missy Reeves not as a Christian, but as a person who has the right in this country to say what she wants to say, free of people making her a target for ugliness and vitriol. I respect the rule of law, and if that means that marriage is defined as between a man and a wife, than I respect that. If the laws change, then I will respect that as a citizen of this country. I refuse to accept any group who would work to stifle free speech in this country because that means we’re moving toward communism. We have the freedom of speech in this country, but that does not give us the right to smear, berate or hate anyone into silence because they take a view that is not what I want to hear.

Gosh Jim I’m so happy to finally hear someone who has something sensible to say on this topic. I wholeheartedly agree with you. I hope that America soon becomes “ok” with gay marriage. It became legal in July of 2005 here in Canada, and our country has not suffered because of it. In fact, it has made our country more united. I hope that America can soon find the same acceptance.

The difference, isn’t compromised.

I think this kind of dialogue between people is exactly the kind of good that comes out of the negative, so I’m quite happy. I knew that Scott Reeves, Melissa Reeves, Steve Burton, and his wife, and a handful of other soap stars are (or at least were) conservative Christians. Some, like Burton and Austin Peck started out being really vocal about it and have since focused on the work and, in my opinion, lightened up, and others have been fired for pushing their beliefs on anyone who would listen on set or in the press (I remember it happening to an actor on ATWT, and there were rumors that it happened to Peck on DAYS), and still others like the Reeveses occasionally mention it, but haven’t made it central to their professional identity in years. I say that because that’s all we have a right to, in my opinion, their professional identity.

Tweets are an interesting hybrid for me. I actually enjoy the peek into the actors lives a bit, and recognize that they are more expressing themselves and less trying to get me to think or feel anything (which is not their right or their business–and is my only problem with evangelical Christians who constantly tell me that despite the fact that I go to mass every week, sometimes more, and pray every day, the fact that I am pro-gay and Catholic makes me destined for hell. It pisses. me. off.) Thus when I know that Nancy Grahn is a liberal and suspect Laura Wright is conservative (from some of the links she shares and/or books she praises), it’s a welcome peek into seeing them as real people. Remember, Twitter is completely OPT IN (you choose to follow them because you want to know what they think–you have no guarantee you will like or agree with everything they think) and like life, we are enriched by people who have different beliefs and feelings than us. Some of my best friends are different than I am and I learn by not resisting but instead listening to how they got to their beliefs–and sometimes I even alter my own based on what I’ve learned and vice-versa. And all of my truly BEST friends are like that–you can’t put them in one political or ideolgoical box because they think for themselves. Just when you think you can predict what they will think on X, they surprise you with Y.

So this dialogue is good. And the understanding that you aren’t a bigot for disagreeing. And most importantly the reminder that a lot of us jump into these public fights without knowing all the facts–just as Missy Reeves apparently did. She, like a lot of my conservative friends, thought the Chick-Fil-A thing was about free speech. Many of Chick-Fil-A’s supporters and political backers made it out to be that way. Many of my own conservative friends had NO idea that it had very little to do with one man’s opinion and right to say it in public and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that Chick-Fil-A donates a portion of all their proceeds to their foundation which then disburses that money to causes that include anti-gay ones actively working to restrict or roll-back gay rights and anti-discrimination protections. I would shop at ANY store owned by someone I disagreed with politically if the quality was good. What he does with his speech and the money/salary/profit HE makes is his business. When the store itself starts using store money and raw profit (proceeds from sales) to back causes I disagree with, I will stop shopping there. It’s what the BUSINESS does with my money that I voluntarily spend there that matters, not what the owners believe and/or shout from the rooftops. That’s their business and it is their right.

It sounds like once Chappell shared with Reeves that it was about more than free speech and showed her the connection/money trail, Reeves was horrified too. Trust me, ANYONE who only listened to one source of informatoin, be it a fired-up pastor, or angry political commentator on FOX, a gay-rights activist, and didn’t research the full issue themselves (willing to look at info and arguments from both siides) could have fallen into the trap of the mindless drone that Reeves did. She heard Chick-Fil-A was under fire for speaking out against something that upset liberals and gays and she tweeted her support. Not realizing it had very little to do with “speaking out.” Now that she knows, she feels horrible. But so should those who rushed to call her a bigot.

So you think MR is a “mindless drone”? Yikes. That sounds almost as bad as calling her a “bigot”. Oh well, I won’t argue with you on that, but mindless or not, MR should have spoken for HERSELF. She believes in Free Speech, after all.

No, I don’t think that AT ALL. I was trying to say that when we jump when we hear these calls to action from commentators on TV, or activist groups or whatever (whether liberal or conservative) so many of us rush to sign petitions, or tweet out our feelings, comments on boards, or tell all of our friends on Facebook or at church or our neighbors about this horrible thing we’ve just heard that is happening. We’ve ALL done it–gone into what I call “mindless drone” mode–when we emotionally react to facts we’ve been given, without checking to see if it’s the whole story. Every time a political ad comes out (the new almost completely false “Obama cut work for welfare” ad springs to mind; but to flip it around, the misleading “Mitt says he likes to fire people” false ads also count; it’s not a partisan thing, it’s a people thing), people suddenly pass it around without checking to see if they are being given only part of the story. That’s all I mean. We have all ended up looking stupid when we pass on/act on information we’ve heard only to find out later it’s not *exactly* true, and there have been many more times we pass on or act on things and never learn it was based on half info. I call that mindless drone mode because that’s exactly what the people stirring stuff up — on both the extreme conservative side who tried to recast this as a free speech issue and the extreme liberal side which tried to make everyone from Chick-fil-A seem like hateful bigots — want you to do. They want people to hear about it and mindlessly (not think it through) pass it on. A celebrity has a bigger stage so the potential for blowback is higher. I don’t think Melissa Reeves (who, despite her earlier mistake–which no one should have to live through in public–has never seemed like a Christian hypocrite and instead has always seemed like a wonderful family woman with her head on straight and a kind, beautiful heart) meant to act mindlessly (without thinking), but she did and the blowback has been outrageous. No one comes out looking good in this. And my whole point is that she’s not a bigot, she’s a person, and a good one apparently. I’m sorry if my use of those two words was provocative and undermined my overall point.

The whole chick-fil-a bull isn’t about free speech,it’s about gay people having equal rights to get married and have the same benefits as straight married couples do.The whole “free speech” thing is just a way to twist the facts.I wonder how many people would be supporting chick-fil-a if the owner came out in support of Jerry Sandusky or the guy that shot everyone in the movie theater in Colorado–that would be free speech too right?

We’ve all spoken before knowing all the facts about something and I believe that’s what Missy did but I don’t believe for a minute she was intentionally trying to hurt anyone or that she’s a bully. I’ve met her and Scott and they are both very lovely, down to earth people and had she known all the facts, she probably wouldn’t have posted her tweet quite so exuberantly.
I honestly didn’t know what all the fuss was about with Chick-Fil-A until I started reading about it myself — honestly, I thought it was about free speech and being entitled to our own opinions, but after reading more, I see it was bigger than that.
We shouldn’t as fans started calling her names, not like she’s Kirk Cameron who specifically went on National TV and showed everyone what a bigot he is.
She should speak about it to her fans but seeing as how everyone has already made up their minds about her, would it really matter? probably not.

Mike T, it is about free speech, just as much as any person in this country giving money to a cause is also free speech. It is your right to free speech to not financially support Chik Fil A, or to make bogus innuendo associations to the owner of Chik Fil A to the shooter in Colorado or Jerry Sandusky to make your point.

Oh Jim, the more you post the more you give yourself away. Your right wing views are disturbing — esp for a person who says he is gay. It was NEVER about Free Speech, Huckabee suggested that the conservatives use this to shield themselves. No one has denied Cathy, CFA or their “followers” the right to speak freely. Cathy funnels monies through the CFA Foundation to groups like FRC that seek to deny gays/lesbians rights — and JIM, THAT INCLUDES YOU! (Sorry for the caps, but I wanted to get your full attention).

Melissa sent that tweet out so she can certainly clear the air…is she THAT upset?? I give credit to Chappell for digging deep and finding out some answers. I just seriously doubt Reeves didn’t know the full truth of what she was tweeting about. She was pretty direct with what she said….why can’t she issue a response? Even her husband Scott has been silent too…and he’s got out boss’ at GH. Days was enjoying great press in regards to the Will storyline and then this hit the fan. While I appreciate Crystal looking into this, I would have hoped Reeves herself would have spoken out.

Go crystal way to stand up for missy reeves and tell what missy real intention was. You are upstanding woman and actress. And unlike greg rikkart you handled like a mature. Adult and concern friend. Her speaking the truth from her heart and cause a rage piranha to come after her and her family.

It is Missy’s place to clear her name if she feels she has done something wrong, not CP. That would be the mature response. Well, I am not sure I can believe Melissa. I do not know her personally. So I can only try to understand from actions or lack thereof.

I get that she may have been clueless as to what exactly she was supporting with that tweet. What I do not get is the blocking of people who tweeted her respectfully (yes, I am one of them). Furthermore, people who have supported and interviewed her a lot over the last decades have been blocked.

That to me was very ostrich-like and ignorant. And taking that into account, I can believe that Melissa is a bigot, and a bully too.

Speaking out now would be too little too late for me. I am afraid I would view it as damage control without real conviction.

The key is that CC, who HAS known MR for years as a PERSON, not a celebrity, can make that judgement and is sharing that with us. While I’d like MR to stand up for herself and clarify, I think she’s genuinely shell shocked by what’s gone down. Not everyone has been trying to educate her. There have been crazies (who are either unhinged or just like stirring the pot, whether they care about gay rights or not) who have threatened her. She’s not a Twitter pro. I say let it rest for a bit and trust a woman, CC, who has no reason to be an apologist for DAYS or MR, and only wants us to know that the impression given is not one that is consistent with the person she knows.

True. I have read some nasty tweets towards her and her family. But all in all, most tweets I have seen were respectful. Of course some trolls used the storm to stir up trouble but that could have happened after a post about the shining sun.

And I think MR is in the business long enough to know there’d be a reaction. Good or not.

She is not a bigot or a bully because she does not believe the same way that you do, or say the things you think she should say, or respond the way that you think you. How is anyone supposed to believe (in) her when we only have her tweet and non-reaction afterwards. I agree with previous posters if she indeed felt that strongly she could have said something publically. Plus she is in the business long enough she could have known that a reaction would follow. Mis-Tweeting doesn’t exactly add up with actual tweet: “Chick-fil-A today!!!! Loved every bite of it;)!! Land of the free and home of the brave. Love that we all appreciate free speech, right?” But oh well, no use making this about Melissa Reeves (I would hate to see her play the victim) when it’s the ISSUES that matter. In the end, MR is just a small part and the real problem(s) is just so much bigger. I’m sick of hearing about MR’s tweet; the issues should get this much coverage! Maybe that would HELP to make a difference in a world/society where equality is often measured in $$$ and people don’t really matter as much as the bottom line.

Words and actions have consequences.I believe her twitter post was both cryptic and incendiary. If Melissa was comfortable voicing, what she believes was her support of freedom of speech, then Melissa should have the courage to speak on her own behalf in regards to her twitter post. Additionally, she should also explain why she chose to block followers, specifically those (i.e. Greg Rikaart amongst several) who respectfully questioned the meaning behind her tweet. Furthermore, since this fiasco she has also opted to privatize her twitter feed. This is not time for silence.

Really, Manny? Are you part of the ranks of the easily offended? Twitter is a free service. Just like you, she has the right to block or privatize her account just like you, and she does not have to answer to you or anybody.

If she truly believes in Free Speech, then MR did the exact opposite by blocking posters who disagreed with her and then closing her account instead of doing the Christian thing and apologizing. She treated her fans horribly after the tweet; the tweet she posted to Candace Cameron (yes, Kirk’s sister) was almost unforgivable as it made light of what she had done. I cannot imagine anyone — esp a Christian — laughing about hurting people by saying she had lost a lot of fans and having a good laugh with Candace. Religion has been damaged and hijacked by politics, so maybe organized religion has gotten this far off track. Still, I have met a few good Christians, so I know they’re still a few out there.

I never for one minute thought Missy was supporting hate groups or an anti gay groups. I found her tweet completely harmless. However, I did find the tweets to her extreme bullying and disgusting. As to Mr Riikart’s blog I found it passive aggressive in it’s bullying. Who is Greg Riikart to expect Missy to respond to him? “I reached out” garbage. As to Miss Chappell, Missy DID follow up her original tweet when the hate came her way with an explanation that she was supporting free speech. But she was called a liar by twitter respondents and Mr Riikart himself suggested she was trying to cover her backside after the fact. WHY should she again explain herself and open herself up to more of the same from Mr Riikart and the bullies amongst the gay community? AND PLEASE DO NOT SUGGEST THEY DON’T EXIST. Missy’s twitter account is evidence it do. I do not know Missy in fact I’ve never met her, but I do follow her and know she finds it impossible to hate. She is always loving and positive in her tweets. I will continue to support Missy’s right to feel how she feels and not say another word in the same way I continue to support the gay community and their right to marry. But Mr Riikart and Ms Chappel need to STFU and leave it alone now.

Missy should have reached out and responded BECAUSE she believes in Free Speech. If that is the case and she was just supporting free speech, why WOULDN’T she put her words where her Chick-fil-a chicken sandwich was and exercise her right to freedom of speech? Saying you believe in freedom of speech and then saying NOTHING is kind of “defeafening”.

That is so far from the truth…. when, issues, are publicized.. and we have this opportunity to voice our opinions… just as you share, and we all share, the platform to vocalize the debate… i will never believe that the gay community would ostracize, ANYONE.

Actually, she is advocating for gays to be beaten up and killed. She is supporting a company that knowingly donated a portion of profits to an organization that lobbied for Uganda’s “kill the gays” bill to proceed without any US govt. agency interference. That company’s money goes to SPLC designated hate groups that are no different in their “tolerance” for LGBTs than the KKK is of people of color.

Please stop spreading that rubbish. That is patently untrue. FRC opposed one SENTENCE in the bill, the part that said “gay sex acts are a universally recognized human right”. It is half-truths and outright LIES like this that make your “side” look foolish.

Bullpucky. FRC did not want the resolution to pass. Period. Peter Spriggs has said as much on the radio. The way they went about stopping it was objecting to that sentence and lobbying the House of Reps. that are more friendly to having their ears bent for their dollars. The bill is now likely permanently stalled. Or how do you like these FRC directly quoted “half-truths”:

It amazes me how your “side” always wants to pretend like everything done and said is being mis-construed. FRC does nothing but forment hate & intolerance.

AdG, I do not pretend to be as knowledgeable about the gay movement as you are. But I did support FRC in the ’80s, and there IS a group called NAMBLA (North American Man-Boy Love Association) that was accepted by the gay community and participated in gay-pride parades with them. This group is the group the FRC pamphlet was deriding, I’m pretty sure. Their mantra is “sex by 8 before it’s too late!” and some of their members were responsible for the deaths of children. LGBT has since denounced them, but they do exist.

I am playing NICE here and just asking a question, 🙂 but I am interested as to why Greg Rikaart’s sexuality needs to be defined for the public? Isn’t it enough that maybe he believes so strongly in this topic that he is defending the gay community and possibly his gay friends? I could touch on your other points (which I agree with what you said, by the way), but I just want to know why one has to make public their sexuality when they are outspoken on a subject.

Christine, you agree with her? I followed your posts before 🙁 Tolerance benefits all people, everyone is tolerated at some point (even in their daily lives), but no one will or should tolerate any group (be it Christians or whomever) or business that seeks to actively harm them. You wouldn’t be tolerant of a group that targeted Christians or Blacks (at least, I hope not.) We would never have expected the Jews to tolerate Hitler, would we? It really is that simple (logically) and dire (consequentially).

JSUK: Coming out is a very personal decision and no one should be taunting anyone about coming out of the closet. Doing so is one of the complaints with bulling, in instances gay people were “forced” out and the results were devastating. Please try to understand what “tolerance” means, we all tolerate others UNLESS the person(s) or groups are doing something to harm us (Christians should not ask for tolerance for businesses funding hate groups or Christians who fund such groups, no one should tolerate the potential damage to another group of people, the end result of that would truly be tragic for all mankind as the past and Hitler’s regime echoes). I hope you understand that tolerance is NEVER an excuse.

Matt what I agree with in deb’s post was that Melissa Reeves should just be left alone. As much as I love Greg Rikaart, maybe he should have not said anything. To me, it is just not so black and white. I see shades of gray.

I think maybe he should have stopped at the Tweet that he sent to her, seeing he didn’t get a response and let it be. It’s also 2012 and our country has become more and more outspoken. Agree to disagree. However, I do NOT believe this thing with Melissa Reeves was all about “free speech” judging by everything she says includes a quote from the Bible and I do believe she had sinister motives in the Tweet that she sent. Many of my friends are gay and lesbian, some are coupled up and some aren’t, some want the right to marry and some don’t care. I support whatever makes them happy, it does not mean I’m gay. Anne, I have followed this story, and Melissa DID tweet again after her original Chick-fil-a post, she tweeted Kirk Cameron’s sister Candace about how she had just lost a lot of fans and LAUGHING about it! The statement about Free Speech was in her original Chick-fil-a post, to my knowledge she has NOT explained anything since then, although, as I said, she did tweet Candace Cameron at her fan’s expense (laughing).

she also tweeted and said she couldn’t understand what all the hate was, that she was just supporting free speech, can’t we all get along and love each other. She’s like a lot of celebrities who have made the mistake of not researching something. I’ll put my hand up and say I was dumb enough to do that at times. Doesn’t make her a biggot. I’m sure she’s upset and not a little frightened thanks to the threats.

That was ALL Melissa Reeves had to do. Why was it so hard for her? Who knows? She believes in Free Speech, yet she NOW refuses to speak. NO ONE should HAVE to SPEAK for HER! (I’m using caps to emphasize that she was in total control of this situation and chose NOT to use her right right to freedom of speech, the VERY thing she claims she was defending in her tweet.

Also, I hate that this needs to come up every time we have these discussions, but the right to free speech in the country is very specific–and ONLY applies to the GOVERNMENT involving itself in citizen’s speech. It is perfectly legal and okay for people (including large portions of the public) to let a business, celebrity, person, newspaper know as loudly as they want (within harrassment and stalking laws, of course) that they don’t approve. They can organize boycotts, picket outside the store to inform people of the businesses position, and write strongly worded (and sometimes offensive) things about them on the Internet. When there was backlash against Dr. Laura’s offensive tirade, many said her firing was people restricting her free speech, and here neither Dan Cathy/Chick-Fil-A, nor Melissa Reeves had their free speech impinged in ANY way. I hate the kind of speech that is out there, especially on the Internet. And threats are too far–and I hope Missy Reeves is reporting each one to the police–but she can say what she wants and people can react in ANY way they want, and none of it has anything to do with free speech, which is a constitutional right that protects us ONLY from the Government supressing our speech. It’s important that we speak out against what is wrong with this but also that we don’t claim it is anything more than it actually is.

I’m not going to judge her but having seen her posts in the past, she has never said a hateful comment about anyone… and then she makes one comment – I fully believe without knowing exactly what Chickfila was doing – and gets slammed. She has already spoken/apologized to those that she cares for, that matter to her. Why should she respond to hateful comments attacking her, her family and her beliefs? Losers are bringing up her past and throwing that in her face and she owes THEM an apology? I can bet 99% of those attacking her have said or done way worse to others. They don’t deserve anything. This is not personal. We all share this platform. “For and Against” our constitution… is our right. Ostracizing a person, because we can? It’s demeaning to the human spirit.

CFA has been donating to these orgs for years and why no comment about it before now? Is it still okay to be of the OPINION that marriage is the domain of a man and a woman? Did you know he was an adulterer too!!??? Chappell entering the frey to try and explain someone else’s behavior is not helpful. Let Missy speak for herself and if she chooses not to, that’s her choice.

that’s what I’ve been saying, gay groups have known for YEARS what kind of groups Chick-fil-A donates to, but NOW they decide to make a stink about it. Why? Because Dan Cathy said he is pro-traditional marriage to a CHRISTIAN group. Duh. I also think President Obama’s coming out in favor of gay marriage has emboldened the left to BULLY everybody else into thinking the way they do. I can’t speak for Missy, but it is when the mayors of major cities started banning Chick-fil-A that I decided to support Chick-fil-A day. The ACLU took Chick-fil-A’s side, as did major religious figures like the Cardinal and Billy Graham.

You know, we only know about Chick-Fil-A but how many other restaurants you eat at and stores you shop at that believe in the same thing? All those that are bashing Missy for one Twitter comment better be careful, because next week that favorite place you’ve been supporting might just turn up on the same list as Chick-Fil-A then what are you going to do?? She has the right to her own opinion and I strongly believe she meant no harm to anyone; just didn’t know all the facts. People keep saying she’s a religious bully, well guess what, there are plenty of groups — gays included that can bully just as much! Quit acting like saints.

you know, I went to watch both “events” at the Chic-full of it near my house… it was obvious that there are people who know exactly what the guy said, even if he didn’t say it, pardon the pun, straight out. They seemed gleeful as they strolled out of the place yelling “yeah! freedom of speech!”

it was equally as obvious, that there are a lot of really dumb, uneducated people out there that came to shout stupid stuff to the gay people (that came to protest where Chic-full of it donates money while still calling themselves good Christians.)

Two examples of what I heard that day: a woman leaned out her car window and shouted “I came from 2 straight parents! Where the *!##! did you come from?” (what?! did you not study biology like the rest of your class?)

second thing: a man obvious not to know a thing of what was really going on, walked up to the guys/gays and angrily said ” I just don’t understand why you’re out here trying to convert people.” I giggled, I thought he just had to be joking. Oh no. He was quite serious. He really thought the group was out there to convert people to “gayness”. I have to give points to the man who answered him, without laughing, that no, they were not out to convert people, they were actually protesting where Chic ful A donates money… of course being wrong about what was going on made the nut angrier and he stormed off sayig “that’s B#@! S#!@” over and over.

Wow! Great post. This is what people have been trying to say in so many posts, but you WERE there and you know what REALLY happened. It’s sad that people are so undeniably uneducated, but these same people often vote for denying rights to others — even though it often means voting against their own best interests as well. Very sad. It really comes down to people being able to care about their fellow human beings . . . as long as some people believe that denying rights to others somehow elevates their lot in life, we may never get beyond these kinds of debates.

What you witnessed sounds absolutely sickening. It sounds like an abortion rally or something in the south involving Confederate flags. I am grateful to have grown up in the North East and in the 70s (after the women’s movement) so I did not have to endure what my black friends have had to endure and, while heterosexual, I am glad of who I am for not having to go through what my homosexual friends are going through. The injustice is just wrong. I really hate how people use the Bible as an excuse for their HEINOUS actions. And the majority of these people think they are some great contribution to society when, in fact, they are usually the first ones to cut you off on the freeway (while proudly displaying their Jesus fish or whatever license plate) and to cheat on their spouses, taxes, steal from their friends and neighbors, you name it. Whatever happened to just trying to be a good HUMAN BEING? Do unto others? I guess THAT part of the Bible does not apply.

I guess while I am at it I should say that (and it is probably no big surprise because of my name) I was raised Roman Catholic. I studied the Bible too. While this is not a debate about the Catholic faith, it is a Christian faith so I am saying it. I don’t agree with everything the church stands for. I can’t believe that you could just kill someone or sexually abuse them (basically sin or commit a crime) and say you are sorry and you go to Heaven. I can’t believe that is why we are on this Earth. To harm others in the name of the Lord because they do not conform to what we want them to be and then just say a few Hail Marys or whatever penance and we are absolved of all wrong doing.

I wish I were more eloquent at getting my point across, but I am just so sick of everyone in the “land of the free” who have their rights wanting to trample their fellow human beings that want the same rights even though they have different beliefs. We are all flesh and blood and should be treated equal.

I went to Chick-fil-A on August 1 and I did not see one protester anywhere. And everybody was pretty subdued, just quietly ordering chicken with their families, nobody was gleeful or mean-spirited at all.

There were 2 days of “events” The first one, that was Aug. 1, was the reverse ‘protest’ where people in support of chic full of it came to buy food. I happened to be in the lane where all the traffic was backed up due to cars heading in – police had flashing lights on their cars – it was a traffic mess and of course it was just after 5pm when I got there. I wasn’t sure what to expect on that day, but their drive thru was overflowing and there was a throng of people lined up to go inside – and then come out and yell the ‘free speech’ stuff. Only saw one lesbian couple with a poorly made sign (no one could read it cuz they used a ball point pen instead of dark marker).

Friday was the in support of gays / protest of where Chic donates money. And there was a relatively small group there – however it was nearly 112 degrees out!

There are 16 Chic’s in my metro area. I only stopped by the one near my house, but we saw several larger gatherings at other Chic’s on TV at work. I was expecting a lot more people – but it was very hot here and I figured I saw pretty much a small sampling of what was going on across all their locations.

Bull is what I think of Melissa Reeves “explanation”. She is NOT that naive. She knew full well what she was doing, hence the “wink” at the end of her tweet. I guess she didn’t realize what she was doing she she got involved in the rumored scandal backstage at DAYS all those years ago that resulted in her being forced off the show and banished to the hills of Tennessee for years. Wink on that!

Are you kidding me? Did Dan Cathy say that he hated gay people? Did he wish them harm? He expressed a viewpoint on marriage that is in complete alignment with his beliefs as a Christian. Whether we like it or not, many people believe the bible. Some may not agree with it, but there are people who live and breathe this.

The politicians who have spoken out on this issue and have gotten their opportunist mugs in front of the camera and calling this hate speech and saying crazy things like ChickFilA is not welcome in their cities, blah blah. GTFOH!! He stated that he believes in the traditional definition of marriage. Calling this hate speech cheapens the definition and makes these politicians look like pandering fools.

Twitter is akin to freakin middle school. This fake controversy proves the point. Folks who seek an apology, get over it! An apology for what?? For believing what she believes??? Why would you even want that?? I try to keep an open mind in all things. But, I cannot abide attacking someone who does not share my world view. Agree to disagree and move on.

Crystal a very good friend. The guy from Young and Restless is the real Bully. I will not watch because of him.

People who claim Melissa Reeves is a bully they are hipocrates because they are the bullies.

We all need to stop and realize that world does not revolve around us and juding mreeves on her beliefs does not better you or me. I agreed with her many levels and i am christian.

You are “judging” MR, too, you know — but you are judging her to be someone who shares your beliefs.

I believe Melissa is sincerely sorry, and we should forgive her and move on from here. I’m sure we all have made the same mistakes before. I know I have. 🙂

I do NOT advocate anyone making death threats to anyone. Anyone who did this to MR or anyone should be ashamed. While I feel CC’s blog was ill-advised, I know she was trying to make a bad situation less so for a friend, but she should have let MR speak for herself. MR should be entitled to her OWN beliefs and not worried about a Christian backlash (as someone indicated) if she explained that she truly did NOT do this for any other reason than Free Speech. MR can still apologize and, if she’s sincere, I for one WILL gladly accept her apology and move on as if this NEVER happened.

One last word as a gay Christian man. If we got this worked up over child abuse and harnessed our collective outrage into action, our children would be a heck of a lot more safe. Honestly, the whole Missy Reeves thing is so inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Quit spending so much time looking for reasons to be freaking offended. Did you know that there are over 20 million men who have been abused in our country in the worst possible way? Did you know that there is an incident of child abuse reported every ten seconds? Really, we need to concentrate on the things that matter, because if we don’t start looking at keeping our children safer to those who would do them harm, they won’t live to see the day they can get married, or they will be afraid to be married because they’re so screwed up from what happened to them.

Jim, you can be a Christian and STILL want gays/lesbians to have equal rights. As for child abuse, we can all be aware of it — and we should — but safety of kids usually hinges on parental concern. You can never do more for any kid than that kid’s parents can — if the parent is responsible parent. If we see abuse, we should report it, but being aware of it and being able to stop it are two different things. Denying rights to gay/lesbian kids can also be seen somewhat as abuse, if these kids are denied the rights of their peers, then they will be more likely to be abused by persons in society and society itself. Gay and lesbian kids are prone to depression because of feelings of hopelessness and many commit suicide, we should be concerned about ALL kids. And that, Jim, includes gay/lesbian kids as well.

you can read my posts above – I went to both “events”. You know as I watched people outside on the first event, happily yelling ‘freedom of speech’ rants, and they were rants – they were not being nice and being supportive of other freedoms in the constitution (pursuit of happiness, equality, freedoms from being discriminated against) or the bible (love thy neighbor).

There was a man watching and talking on the phone, giving someone else the lo-down and he was trying to tell me about the Christian view… and I told him, ‘I’m a Christian and my grandpa was a Methodist minister, and it hurts me that someone can be hateful to others that are born differently and that person can turn and call themselves Christians and better than the other person.’

I guess he didn’t have a good answer for that as he looked at me and then turned his back on me (says alot doesn’t it?) and walked away.

I am completely uninterested in the “christian” beliefs of a woman who has cheated on her husband.

Someone mentioned that Austin Peck is another big time conservative christian….

So soap stars who cheat on their spouses with co-stars is acceptable, but I shouldnt legally be able to marry?!?!?

If Mr. Cathy had been choosing to show his “support for Biblical marriage” by contributing to a lobbying effort to return to the days of prison sentences and other heavy judicial penalties for adultery–which is surely a more direct threat to marriage, Biblical or otherwise–I wonder if Mrs. Reeves would have been so eager to jump at the chance to show her support and tweet so gleefully about it.

I applause and give thanks to Crystal Chappell for having a mature rational response to this situation. we should all hope that we would have as true a friend willing to reach out and get clarification and understanding, to be willing to stand up and say that’s not who my friend is or what she believes. Crystal handled this situation with class, respect and dignity for all involved. While I do believe M.R should come forward and clear the air, we all have a duty as friends to stand up for one another and stand up for whats right. Well thought out dialog and communication will open eyes and hearts much faster than name calling and negative behavior. Kudos and much love and respect Mrs. Chappell!

I think it was very nice of Crystal Chappell to take the time to reach out to Melissa Reeves for clarification about her Chick-fil-A tweet. What happened to Melissa in the aftermath of her tweet was nothing short of bullying by Greg Rikaart and his cohorts.

I am not a supporter of gay rights, but I do greatly appreciate Crystal Chappell’s tolerance of persons who have views different from hers. And yes, the President of Chick-fil-A does have a right to free speech as do we all. The so-called “hate groups” that Chick-fil-A is alleged to support are organizations that believe and promote what the Bible teaches about marriage and family.

I do not at all understand why anyone who believes and preaches or teaches what the Bible says about marriage, family, sex, etc. is considered a “hater”. The Bible says what it says, whether anyone believe in the Bible or no. Everyone is free to make his/her on choice on that. Why should persons who believe what the Bible says be called a “hater”? Going by that definition, every minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ who preaches/teaches the Word of God pure and unadulterated is a “hater”. How ridiculous is that?

If there were more supporters of gay rights like Crystal Chappell who demonstrate common sense as well as tolerance for others who do not share their views, there may not have even been a Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. There would have been no need for it. But because of persons like Greg Rikaart and his cohorts, support for Chick-fil-A will continue to grow as an outward protest against such a lack of tolerance.

Its nice of CC to jump to Reeves defense. She needs defending. Her comments implied her support of hate mongering and that she allies herself with their campaign of hate to remove civil liberties from LGBTQ persons. As a member of a show which is currently telling a story of acceptance and tolerance for people who are different, I find her comments contradictory to the values being put forth by Sony and NBC. I hold her responsible and accept no plea of ignorance. Chick-Fil-A has been in the news and of course, she knows that, that is why she showed up with her bible humping family to enjoy the hate-bred chicken. I think Days should hold her to her contract and have her character come out of the closet as a late in life lesbian who crusades for equal rights. Melissa Reeves may verywell have become the most despised woman on daytime.

Paul, I agree with you regarding the show right now (DAYS). Let me embellish without hurt/prejudice and hypothetically: If I had made a mistake in speaking/terminology and was a known actress or a nobody then I should apologize and make my real thoughts known, immediately. Maybe the lack of a timely response and the response itself may be due to: fear of backlash; personal sexual issues; jealousy of CC’s success; someone in the background helping MR along. Far out thinking; if “Melanie” marries “Chad” would you not want your Mother at your wedding??? CC is a formidable contender to anyone and CC I have lived long enough to know good friends will disappoint you. You know that, too. Let’s move onto the Grove and Season four of Venice and accept lessons learned.

I don’t understand how anyone can’t see how Missy could have supported free speech. Suporting freedom of speech does not mean you agree with what has been said. I myself made a similar mistake. Because when I was supporting Chic fil a ‘s right to say what they felt, I had no clue that they were supporting hate groups so I can see how Missy didnt know that either. Missy Reeves is also a very religious person, so she believes in that. Doesn’t mean she hates people who don’t follow her religion. I believe in equal rights for gays. And I can say that because of freedom of speech!

ChickFilA is a huge supporter of FamilyResearchCouncil who promote criminalization of homosexuality. What is really slimy is how celebrities and atheletes talk prejudice out of one side of their mouth, couching it in FreeSpeech and the Bible, while claiming not to offend anyone out of the other side of their mouth. That seems the slimyest bit, to put it out there then slither away as if no harm was intended.

51st Annual Daytime Emmy Award Nominations: CBS Soaps Score Most, Eric Braeden, Dick Van Dyke, Guy Pearce Receive Nods

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) have officially announced on Friday, the full list of nominees for the 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

While Thursday brought with it four reveals of the nominees in the Outstanding Daytime Drama, Talk Show Host, Lead Actor and Actress categories (as presented by various entertainment news programs), today’s nominations include all the other categories not previously announced.

The Daytime Emmy Awards telecast is set to be presented live on Friday night, June 7, at 8 PM EDT /delayed PT, on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+. This will mark the 18th time that CBS has broadcast the Daytime Emmys.

In addition, The Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle Emmy Awards will be presented on Saturday, June 8 at t9 PM ET/6 PM PT and streamed on The Emmys apps and at watch.TheEmmys.tv. The ceremonies will take place at the Westin Bonaventure Los Angeles.

Television icon, Dick Van Dyke has received his first-ever Daytime Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Guest Performer category for his touching portrayal of Timothy Robicheaux on Peacock’s Days of our Lives. The nomination makes Van Dyke the oldest Daytime Emmy nominee in history at 98-years-old.  In addition, motion picture and TV star, Guy Pearce, is also nominated as Guest Performer for his longtime role as Mike Young in the reboot of Neighbours.

Speaking of Neighbours, the Australian soap opera also received its first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Daytime Drama Series now that its a revival can be streamed on Amazon Freevee. In addition, The Young and the Restless iconic, Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) received his first Daytime Emmy nomination in more than 20 years in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category.

In the Daytime Drama series categories, CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless each scored 12 nominations more than any other show. Leading the acting nominations was B&B, who landed 7 performers in the various categories, a first in its 37-year history.

In a statement, Adam Sharp, President & CEO, NATAS expressed, “We are happy to once again honor the creative talent both in front of and behind the camera of America’s favorite Daytime programs. We look forward to celebrating the icons who enliven the days of audiences across the country.”

Brent Stanton, Head of Daytime, NATAS added, “Producing the Daytime Emmys is a labor of love for all of us at NATAS. The huge popularity of these shows continues to be must-see viewing for their fans.” NATAS also revealed that Lifetime Achievement Honorees, Hosts, Presenters, and Silver and Gold Circle honorees will be revealed at a later date.

The Daytime Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in television programming honoring work in a variety of categories, including daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting, culinary, and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy jointly announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime.

The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be produced once again by NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI). Adam Sharp and Lisa Armstrong are executive producers from NATAS, while David McKenzie executive produces from ATI.

Stephen Schnetzer Talks On His Return to Days of our Lives and Working with Susan Seaforth Hayes In Emotional Episodes

Who says you can’t go home again? In the case of Another World favorite, Stephen Schnetzer (ex-Cass Winthrop), he has proven that it is true, and you can go back to your soap roots and where it all started for you.

Last week on April 11th, Schnetzer, along with several other key returns were on set at Days of our Lives taping all-new episodes of the Peacock streaming soap opera, centering on the funeral of Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes), and as part of the iconic soap opera’s 15,000th episode.

Stephen is reprising his first daytime role as Steve Olson, the brother of Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes). The last time Schnetzer appeared on a DAYS set was during his one and only run on the show from 1978 to 1980. Clearly, viewers will be in for some very emotional scenes when Steve returns to Salem to be there for his sister, Julie in her time of need. In real-life, Susan has been going through her own grief, having just lost Bill back on January 12th at the age of 98.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Stephen during the 15K episode celebration ceremony, and during a break from taping the gut-wrenching funeral scenes, to get his thoughts on being part of these highly-anticipated moments that will air later this year in December. Here’s what he shared with us below.

What has this been like for you to work with Susan Seaforth Hayes after all of these years?

STEPHEN: She’s a dream and she’s so bright. We ran lines yesterday and we ended up just visiting for about 45 minutes and just catching up and telling tales about each other’s career. She even dropped off the autobiography that she and Bill did. And being back here at DAYS, every time I turn a corner, there’s another familiar face. When I was on the show 40 more years ago, a bunch of the guys, played softball on a team together. This is really a trip down memory lane as I knew it would be.

Taping Doug’s funeral must be a hard day for Susan. Are you checking in with her to help hold her up through this?

STEPHEN: I am and I’m checking in with Amy Shaughnessy (Susan’s assistant), and she’s holding her up more than anybody. We’re there for each other.

There will obviously be some major hankie-inducing moments when Steve comes back to Salem to console his sister.

STEPHEN: Oh, wait till you see it in December. It’s going to be great.

Were you surprised you got this call to come back to the show decades later?

STEPHEN: It was out of the blue! I was completely surprised. They should have called me decades ago! That’s what surprised me. When Another World went down, I thought I’d land somewhere else and it never happened. That was more of a surprise.

Cass is such an identifiable character for you. As well, you and Linda Dano (ex-Felicia Gallant) are so synonymous together as best friends Cass and Felicia from Another World. When fans heard you were reprising your role as Steve Olson on DAYS, they are now hoping there will be more of you on the show to come.

STEPHEN: Steven Olson is a real “Cassian “character. I cut my teeth on Steve Olson and that’s how Cass was introduced. He was kind of a roguish charmer. And then when the character stuck for Another World, they rehabilitated me, and turned me into one of the shows heroes. And that’s what would’ve happened if I stayed as Steve Olson probably. So, Steve is the ‘pre-Cass’, Cass.

As the story goes, you originally decided to leave Days of our Lives?

STEPHEN: I was never on contract. I was doing a day and a half a week and I got a Broadway play directed by Franco Zeffirelli starring Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay. I was able to it as I didn’t have to break a contract or anything. I cut loose and went back to New York for that.

How well did you get to know Bill Hayes during your first time around on DAYS?

STEPHEN: My first episode was with Bill and Susan, as her long lost brother coming into Salem. They were so good to me. They were so kind. I had been doing eight years of classical repertory theater, never been in front of a camera. I tell everybody, it took me longer than any other actor I’ve ever seen to get comfortable in front of a camera. And they were very supportive at that time in my career. Coming back to honor Bill now in 2024, and to be see Susan, I am just so happy to be here.

51st Daytime Emmys: Outstanding Daytime Drama Series Nominations

On Thursday, the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards revealed nominations in several key categories via four entertainment news programs: Access Hollywood, E! News, Extra and Access Hollywood.

Three of the four announcements were major categories in the field of Daytime Dramas.

The nominees in the Outstanding Daytime Drama Series category are: The Bay, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, General Hospital, Neighbours and The Young and the Restless.

General Hospital won this category last year, and has the most all-time wins for a series in this category. For the first time, the beloved Australian-based soap opera, Neighbours is now eligible for competition due to its reboot which streams on Amazon Freevee.
