General Hospital Overtakes The Young and the Restless As Top-Rated Soap In Key Demo!

Courtesy/ABC

General Hospital has a lot to celebrate this week and the lone ABC soap opera continues to be on FIYAH!  According to ABC, in the latest ratings for the week of October 7-11th, it finally has happened!  GH beat The Young and the Restless as the top rated show in the key female demo of 18-49 for the very first time in 2 and a half years! And that is not all, they continued to be  at#1 for the 8th straight week in the women 18-34 target demo, and are oh-so-close to make it a trifecta, trailing by just 7% behind Y&R in the women 25-54 demo!

Here are the numbers from ABC’s press release via Nielsen ratings:  “For the first time in over two-and-a-half years, General Hospital ranked as the #1 program in daytime in Women 18-49 (735,000/1.1 rating) – since week of 2/21/11 – placed #1 for the 8th straight week in Women 18-34 (285,000/0.8 rating) and came with 7% of  The Young in the Restless for #1 in Women 25-54 (938,000/1.5 rating), closest competitive finish in over two years its  – since week of 8/15/11.

Impressively, this week stood as the series’ most-watched week in over 3 years in Women 18-34 and in over 2 years in Women 18-49 – since weeks of 9/27/10 and 9/26/11, respectively.  General Hospital surged by 40% in Women 18-34 (285,000 vs. 203,000), by 17% in Women 18-49 (735,000 vs. 629,000) and by 12% in Women 25-54 (938,000 vs. 840,000).”

So what do you think of General Hospital’s stellar performance and overtaking the long seated Y&R in the key women  18-49 and for the 8th week in a row of women 18-34 demos?  Has GH rocked it over the last several weeks, or what?  Looks like Kimberly McCullough’s return as Robin and the story it brings with is  ratings gold! Weigh-in!

YES! YES! YES!

I’ve been watching “Young and the Restless” for 32 years — that’s a lot longer than I have been watching “General Hospital” yet even I have to admit I don’t care about Y&R anymore.

Not since show killing witch Jill Farren Phelps came aboard with her bloated boy toy Steve Burton.

Joshua…dude…bloated boy toy, huh??? Man, that is too funny…HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! But, hey, it’s true. And, calling Jill Farren Phelps a show killing witch is one way of describing that VERY insufferable woman…LOL!!!!! Yep.

I say now would be the time to bring back one life to live and all my children

You are SO right!! Have Frank/Ron be TPTB on all 3 shows.. Congrats to GH…I am a loyal fan for the last 2 years after a 15+ years of not watching. I am tuning in to DOOL too, for the first time ever the last couple of years due to Gary Tomlin involvement, and the show has me hooked. All these men did a excellent job when they were in OLTL and they continue the tradition on their respective shows!!

Great thinking!!!

I would FLOVE FLOVE FLOVE to see both AMC and OLTL return to network programming. Nothing wrong with Hulu & OWN, but if ABC wants to gain a huge share of the daytime audience (and we ARE still out here!!!) they could & should bring both back. AMC, GH, OLTL…change up the order, give it a fast pace & some crossover storylines? Oh, I’d be down for that!!!

I disagree about Days though – the out-of-character writing has driven away more long-term viewers than it’s brought in new viewers – that’s why they’re dead last in the ratings so consistently. Until they get rid of Gary Tomlin & his pet characters, the show is doomed to remaining a laughing-stock…there may be viewers still but everyone wants to see a train-wreck.

Now would be the perfect time to bring back OLTL and AMC to ABC. ABC soaps could rule again!

I always find it very amusing that demographics only go to viewers to age 54! As if long time viewers don’t exist after their 55th birthday?
Attending a charity event with about 350 fans of Y&R in Vancouver annually, there were two sisters attending this past July who were 90 and 92. Doesn’t that they watch even count? Maybe there needs be a statistic of the ages who are home and watch the Daytime Dramas. After all, the retirees are growing in numbers every year and are home to watch.

I agree with you!!!

The demographics are absurd – that’s part of the reason for the On-line inceptions of AMC and One Life having problems. I would hazard a guess that many many fans of both these shows are 50+ ~ they would almost HAVE TO BE since the shows have been on for over forty years.
Although many of us could never forgive the so called “execs” at ABC-TV for cancelling these two iconic shows, it would be great if ABC would take them over again as Half hour increments. Why would it be so difficult to have a half hour of All My children backed with a half hour of One Life to Live followed by General Hospital – I don’t see why “trimmed down” episodes would be so impossible and there have been rumors that abc wants the shows back, but we all know about rumors.

Well said, Wendy.

Why MUST our friends and family members who are over 54 be seen as nobody worthy of being included?? It’s plain rude to treat people like wasteland material – many of whom have helped keep show alive through their loyalty AND through passing down their love for the show to their children, grandchildren, friends. etc, intentionally and unintentionally. I eventually ended up becoming a GH viewer because of my family and my nostalgia of them watching it.

Unfortunately there is a deeply held opinion–and one that I am not sure is backed up by any solid research or evidence–that people above a certain age have very deeply set buying patterns and thus are not reached by advertising. Thus they are largely disregarded as viewers. My suspicion, however, is that this is more of an excuse than anything else: the networks need a justification for focusing on youth–which is what they really WANT to do–and this is what they have come up with. It sounds somewhat plausible, but I’ve never seen any solid evidence, and I think it starts falling apart once you think about it more carefully. (For example: even assuming it’s true that younger viewers are more easily reached by advertising, they also have little money to spend, comparatively speaking–so why would advertisers be so eager to invest money in swaying the buying patterns of that group, to the exclusion of others?)

I’m about to enter that dreaded age group myself and I do feel rather insulted that it means that nobody thinks I’m worth investing in any more. Even if the economic rationale turned out to be legitimate, the airwaves are a limited resource and a public good, and there should be some requirement that in exchange for being granted access to them, networks, TV stations, radio stations, etc. have to make some effort to have programming that meets everybody’s needs.

Just goes to show you that having a solid producing/writing team that understands the genre can and will bring in the viewers.

Valentini/Carlivati rock!

AMEN to that!

Understands the genre? Gimme a break. Cartini have turned GH into the same cartoon that was One Life to Live.
And of course the ratings are rising now that Kimberly Mc has returned. And next on the list demographics are important but it’s total viewers that keep a show on the air. YR still maintains 4.5 million viewers while GH cant keep 3 million, lol.
And final comment on the demo of course Cartini’s lame stories would interest an immature crowd. Older viewers just watch this show because like me theyve watched it for decades and they just dont want to see it go.
When GH can gain and consistently keep over 3 million viewers then perhaps they can brag. But technically they wont be able to brag even then. This is a show that premiered at more than 6 million when it had over 15 other shows as competition and people are celebrated under 3 million viewers. That’s a joke, lol.
As long as Cartini continue to run this show it will never again have me as a regular viewer. SMH.

dg, you seem like one of those people that looks for things to complain about. Guess there has to be one in every bunch.

The networks care bout those demo ratings over total viewers that’s how they charge ad rates and we all know networks care more bout money then ” total viewers”. So take that dg…

I agree with Dan !

Y&R will always be the No.1 soap though. If anything, B&B would take its place.

I disagree…I wager if ABC keeps GH on it will move to #2 above B&B in the next year or so.

No way GH will ever reach BB or YR’s total viewers. BB internationally distributed and is the most popular America serial in the world. GH hasnt had and kept 3 million viewers in yrs.
GH’s ratings have been extremely inconsistent since Cartini took over. They have spiked and fallen again and again. That proves that Cartini are a gimmick, tabloid regime. They have zero idea how to create consistent, long arc stories that keep viewers. GH’s ratings are only spiking now due to Kim ( Robin) returning and that is a limited engagement. When the furor over her return dies down so will the ratings.

B&B has international appeal, it won’t be moved from No.2 ever.

Everyone realizes that international viewers don’t count in the Nielsen ratings, right? Santa Barbara was once the biggest draw internationally (in regard to soaps) and had awful Nielsens because the domestic viewership didn’t grow. When it was cancelled, it was still the biggest soap internationally.

Putting aside the criticism of Valentini/Carlivati (which I can both see and not see, if you understand what I mean) and what they’ve done, it’s not as though either B&B or Y&R has been solid (creatively speaking) either. B&B in particular is vulnerable because I don’t think the effects of Susan Flannery’s departure have really been felt yet. I think things like that take time to show up. And Y&R has been a creative mess for a while now, and it remains to be seen whether the new writers can fix that. (Given what I’ve seen of Jean Passanante’s work, I’m not betting on it.)

(A wild card in the mix: Thorsten Kaye as Ridge. If he succeeds, I think it could revitalize B&B.)

So I guess my point is: the GH creative team doesn’t have to be perfect to gain ground in the ratings; even “marginally better” than the competition might be enough. And I think even with the problems (and there are some), they’re managing that.

I can’t stay awake when I try to watch Y&R.

And that’s fine. I can stay awake because it’s riveting and amazing. GH on the other hand…. it needs a wake up call, or more Ava Jerome.

Y&R is terrible..
I do not want to watch a soap that will make me sad over a child’s death, to watch every bodies pain is not good for any person to experience those dark emotions, not good at all .. Y&R is very depressing..
I do not want to be day time depressed..

GH has variety!!! it has humor!! GH goes every which way!!!!
It gives surprises and shocks, love, hate, mystery, great stories and is the #1 soap for entertainment!!
I do not feel sad or depressed watching GH !!

BRAVO!!! to ALL at GH .. well done!!!!

I agree GH at least writes a story- they are creative and inject humor– y&r simply took a dramatic situation that any high school student could write the dialogue for and it would still be dramatic because of the subject matter. It is lazy writing– at least GH seems to remember what a soap is supposed to be and remembers how to actual write one- the pacing of reveals, the teasers before commercials, the last scene of every show ending on a cliff hanger — balancing the dark with the light– the stuff that makes you want to turn in the next day to find out what happens next. And that is what makes a soap great– anticipation and satisfaction– and GH provides both in spades– they richly deserved their number one spot.

I do not watch any of the soaps anymore but kudos to GH!

I dont get you people. YR gives intelligent, adult drama or at least they attempt to do so. GH writes sophomoric, immature stories that even a ten yr old would shake his head at.
Lets see you have Kathleen Gati, pretending to be Finola Hughes wearing a Kmart clearance aisle mask just like Anders Hove did just a few months ago, lol.

Luke have a 65 yr old anti hero Tony Geary trying to find the cure so he wont end up a phosphorescent corpse, lol. You have icons like Genie Francis being marginalized and turned into day players. And people consider this good television. No wonder there are only 4 daytime serials left. SMH

DG, you obviously dont like GH but why does it bother you if others do…i could care less if you watch it or not but if many us so called 10 year olds like it(and RC is doing a better job keeping it on the air than you could) thats a positive thing…i no longer watch Y&R everday and not a fan of B&B but im glad others like them and are watching…even if i dont like the CBS soaps im gratefull they and the two i watch faithfully, Days and GH, are still with us…comparing GH to yesteryears ratings is pointless…back in the 60s there were only a handful of channels while today there are hundreds for people to choose from…and thats what makes todays ratings great for GH and us 10 year olds who watch…now im busy with my coloring book and crayons so this 10 year old says ‘Good day to you!’

I know you werent saying us viewers were 10 year olds…in my reply i was using it for sarcasm…you have your right to your opinion, as well as i do…i just feel we should be grateful all soaps are doing well…you like the cbs soaps better than the other two network soaps and im ok with that…but as long as GH and Days are doing good whats wrong with their fans being happy with that? One day all four could be gone so lets be grateful while we still got them no matter which one we like or dislike!!!

DG, I agree with you completely. Especially the comment about Genie Francis. RC writes like he is producing a comic book. I wish they would bring back Guza to work WITH RC. Guza’s emotional depth and story integration paired with RC’s comic relief and balance among the broader cast would take the genre back to its glory days (with or without TG).

I agree with su0000!! I see nothing wrong with GH stories & they aren’t immature like dg puts it and maybe you shouldn’t watch GH if you feel that way. I never watched Y&R or B&B. I strickly watched ABC soaps not the soaps on the other networks… dg is knocking everything about GH stories and I say don’t watch it. There are a lot of soap fans of GH who do , including me enjoy watching it Mon.- Fri. I am happy I have GH to watch each day! I find the stories exciting and interesting and one more thing GH is entertaining! So Again (dg) don’t watch GH. GH Rocks!

Im sure GHs ratings would be higher if they count all ages and men too…

So would DAYS!

Congratulation General hospital .just wanted to share .I love all are soaps .they really help me get threw all the pain in my life ..really missing Amc &Oltl .

Days used to be my top watch show, but more and more I’m turning to GH as the best way to spend my viewing time. I love the pace, the characters and the way they interact with each other. Days tends to stall their stories and treat viewers and characters like they are brain dead. GH deserves the upswing for delivering quality story telling. They also have the right touch of romantic love woven in! Congrats to them!

I think DOOL slowed down because of the wishy washy performers who me say they may leave or may not leave and talk smack about maybe coming back!

Things are heating up and will start smoking. The writing is on the wall and just needs to speed up.

Not only has Kimberly’s return been ratings gold but bringing back the entire Scorpio family is golden as well. I squealed with joy last week when Robert woke up so GH needs to keep Tristan Rogers around for keeps.

Also the Dante/Lulu Spixie baby battle promises to be good too. Only things I want changed are end the stupid Jerome story. I can’t stomach Ava and Morgan is a total brat. Derek is ok but it time to reveal he is Julian already. And Kiki bores me to death and while Roger Howarth had great chemistry with Laura Wright during the Todd/Carly pairing I just not feeling it this time around.

But GH is way better these days then Y&R which is depressing right now thanks to killng off Delia and I just not getting into the reveal coming that Dylan is Nikki’s long lost son. And other plots like the Carmine/Lauren/Michael fiasco and way dragged out is the Hillary’s vendeyetta against the Winters family. Time to end those stories already.

I think GH will keep climbing in the ratings more, specially when Robin is finally back with her family. It has me on the edge of my seat waiting for it!

Jenny

Keep the Scorpios front and center and it happens every time. February 2012, December 2012 and now October 2013. All 3 times were new highs.

If GH is doing well it’s partly because of the long awaited baby secret that was revealed to Dante and Lulu. It’s not always about Robin being back on the screen again.

Way to GO GH!!! Congratulations!! It’s well deserved and thank you for giving us back our show, our favorites and great story!!! Best cast!!! Best crew, writers, directers, and thanks FV and RC!!! Love GH!!!

It’s Robert… Robin… Faison… Anna… Nickolas… Patrick… Tracy… Dr. O… Luke…Carly… Maxie… Spinelli… Mac… Felica… Alexis… Duke… Sonny… Ava… Julian/Derek… Silas… Sam… Jerry… Helena… Laura… Lucy… Holly… Diane… and maybe Franco! More!!!

You forget “Sabrina.” And “Car-LOS!” (Just kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!) : )

So excited that GH is doing so well…..about time it is beating YnR..I watch YnR..but so tired of the Victor, Jack, Adam, Nic show. And now killing off a child!
So many wonderful s/ls going on right now on GH..keeps one on the edge of ones seat. 🙂

GH now has genuinely likeable characters (unlike a few years ago when everyone worshipped at the Sonny/Jason throne). Y&R is too dark, no one is likeable, they destroyed Sharon…I guess the new recast young characters are supposed to be the likeable ones? The early 80’s fans aren’t gonna stick around forever. DAYS and GH are giving us good characters and story…that trumps Victor and Nikki part 1000.

So true!!!

Thanks to the work of JFP!

Cool, who ever got the show away from the Sonny/Jason hour I applaud. This is a great show, all it needed was to get away from Sonny’s mob.

Kimberly coming back is what saved this show hands down!!!!! She has proven to be loyal to her fans by coming back as Robin!! I just hope she will stay with GH for the long term!! Kimberly has always been my favorite GH actress and the show was just not the same without our Robin!!

Keep believing Kim has been loyal if you want to-but in reality, her behavior has been shameful and pathetic

Lol way to go GH….GH fan forever!

Yay, go GH. This week had the Spixie/Lante baby stuff, and I’m not surprised that’s doing well. Robin’s return is doing wonders for the show too.

The reason GH is doing so well is FV and RC are moving the storylines, vets are being utilized, fan fav’s are back, and RC ia remembering to incorporate GH’s rich history into his storylines. The same cannot be said for Y&R, IMHO Delia’s death was just done as ratings stunt, but it was done by GH in 2011. Y&R has storylines that have dragged out forever,,ie Sharon,Hillary,Nikki;’s son, the non wedding of Nick and Avery A strong happily married couple (Mike and Lauren) were decimated by an imbicle named Carmine and now you have a who shot the fool storyline starting. Guess what..who cares! IMHO Y&R is not must see tv like GH.

Killing off kids for drama has been done by all soaps, starting with Agnes Nixon writing Brooks daughter hit by a car..
the magic is on how it is written..
and Y&R is very depressing and who in their right mind wants to cry during a beautiful day and feel depressed over a Y&R dark story..

Y&R=depressing!
GH=variety and a few laughs .

Killing off kids started in the 1950s on Search For Tomorrow when Joanne Tates young son was struck by a car and killed…i know it probably was b4 your time…anyway i dont think any tv network killed off a soap child b4 SFT.

Kathleen Gati in a Kmart Halloween mask pretending to be Finola Hughes. Yeah that’s must see TV alright, lol.
GH number one…yeah when they hit 4.5 million viewers like YR has then they will be number one. It’s total viewers that keeps a show on the air. GH’s measly 2 million still doesnt compare to YR or BB. SMH

I will always back my girl Sharon but it is time to fold it in this storyline with Delia we do not see Esther, Jill Traci! WTHF!

Still think the ratings should be:
1. GH tied
1. DAYS tied
3. B&B
4. Y&R

Absolutely!

Phil…YES INDEED!!!!! I AGREE!!!!!

congrats to the writers of GENERAL HOSPITAL
They have it going on!!!!!

Dante and Lulu + Maxie and Spinelli (it’s only get better)
Alexis and Dererk Wells+ Carly and Franco ( a good script)
Michael + Kiki and Ava and Morgan………….need some tweaking
Robin + Patrick and Sabrina and Carlo……..I love it (+ Jerry)
Anna + Robert and Duke +Olivia? ………..should be fun!!!
Liz and AJ+ Nick…………………wait and see!!! + Lucky?
Sam and Silas+ Ava………….I want Sam to have a baby girl!!!!!! (the best)!!!!
Sam and Derek Wells…………it’s only get better+ Lucas!!!

why no

Britt’a
Britt and Nicholas
Britt and Ben
Britt and Dr. “O”

gotta have some Brad

I like that you added Olivia in the mix w/Anna and Robert and Duke

MIchael and Kiki are as bad as Daniel and Jenn on DOOL

Go gh go gh! Write CBS and complain about the direction Y&R has taken; with this ratings news they are gonna listen!

I am so happy for GH. Oh! Y & R is going to sink even further. After all JFP has hired her partner in crime, JP to be HW. JP was the writer when ATWT, OLTL, AW and she was the biggest reason those long term soaps bit the dust. I hope Y & R is also booted off the air; it has reached the pinnacle of staleness. Or, I hope the network kicks out JFP and JP; and appoints sensible and wise EP and HW .

I for one have returned to Gh since The writers have incorporated the S/l with so many vets! The dynamic chemistry and integral history / friendship/ relationships of Annna, Felicia, Robert, Anna and the next generation of Robin, Maxie etc are fantastic. the recent simple scene where Mac and Felicia were having breakfast with Patricknand Emma would never happened years ago. The cast is becoming an ensemble again! If you put these characters on, then I’m in! I’m even loving Nicholas and Britt! Thanks tbtp for bringing so many favorite actors back to play the roles in the years Gh was number 1, please keep them on and front and center!

I agree. I love seeing the favorite characters that held the show together in the past. There are always storylines that can keep the stories on GH to keep the ratings rising. I was a Y&R watcher but I haven’t watched since the writer’s started digging Sharon’s grave. I loved Steve Burton on GH but just can’t get into his character on Y&R. I think the Jason character needs to return whether it be Steve Burton or a replacement. It would definitely stir the storylines for Sam. I don’t like the Silas character…too drool. I have watched since a teenager and will continue to watch. Go GH! I have to add I do wish ABC would consider the suggestion I have seen on these posts to bring back One Life to Live and All My Children. The ratings would rise again because where the ratings stop at 54, I happen to to be in in a higher age and I feel if they took the people who really have watched almost since conception of GH they would find GH’s ratings are higher. GH is the only soap I watch now and I again I want to say I’m pleased with what I am viewing.

Congrats GH!!! I’ve been saying DOOL and GH should be on top. I hope the ratings go up for DAYS. The show is still must see TV for me! Y&R and B&B need to be at the bottom. Pure crap!

Ive been a Days fan since the begining and i was hooked since i was 5 or 6 years old believe it or not…it has had its ups and downs since its revamping in 1980, and i did stop watching because of the loss of so many beloved actors/characters during that time but i wasnt gone for long and as long as the Horton home is still there ill still be watching…i just wish theyd bring back Bill(John Martin) and Laura(Jamie lyn Bauer) Horton…they should be the Horton patriach and matriarch living in the Horton home. Bill should be Chief of Staff at the hospital like his late father Tom and Laura could add some drama in Kates life ect.!!!

Well jimh, if you were to become a writer for DAYS, as I’ve urged you to do, then you could implement those ideas and electrify viewers with you brilliant
writing. Reply in kind.

Correction: with your brilliant writing!!!

couldn’t agree MORE about John Martin and Jamie Lyn Bauer.

Dynamite pairing… would bring SO much “A” game back on the canvas

and this would add so much more for Kate

heck…. even add more intrigue for Roman

Bill Horton – Roman Brady – Laura – Kate

heck… throw Marlena in the mix with

she needs a friend in Laura… if not a love potential

she could mix back in with Bill and/or Roman

these demo are so cofusing, whats the difference between women 18-49, or 25-54 ect, what the heck! regardless, i’m glad GH is doing great, hope they finally reclaim their #1 spot from 25 year ago,

The difference is in who spends money to buy stuff. After the age of 54 people are not spending money on housing related stuff so much. They are more in a phase of downsizing and living on a fixed income. Their kids are typically out of the house, so much less groceries, laundry stuff, etc. They are set in their ways and are not likely to swap out their Crest to try the new and improved Colgate.

GH has been a ball to watch lately. I love how campy and over the top it is. DAYS has been a lot of fun, too. Y&R is just a depressing shell of its former glory. Even B&B is more enjoyable.

I agree that demo groups are stupid. They are the undoing of everything, but it’s the corporations’ and the governments’ faults. Demo groups based on age and ethnicity are just plain dumb and un-American by definition.

why are you bringing POLTICS in the mix/????????????

Because that’s my God-given American right, freedom of speech, plus I don’t think I referred to politics, but a general state of affairs that explains the modern day Nielsen ratings.

If you don’t like it, read it and move on; don’t read it; or complain to Michael and see if he will remove it?

OMG, criticizing demographics based on age are political? It’s just really sad that you can’t get a show on tv (except on TV land) unless it appeals to under 35’s. I am 50 and about ready to cut cable and just buy DVD of stuff I like….Guess I am a racist, right KAFFEN?

Well it is a good start and it is only going to get better. With Y&R’s much hated Delia’s death storyline running front and center their ratings will continue to fall. I have been watching soaps for over 35 years and monitor most of the soap’s outlets. With that in mind, I have never heard such a complete distaste in a storyline. Killing off Delia was a major mistake. They were trying to relive the emotions from the BJ storyline on GH 2 decades ago. We live in a different time. People turn to shows to be entertained, not depressed. Every since this storyline started I have been depressed. It has me reaching for my kleenex and prozac.

GH has been on a roll, while Jill Farren Phelps slowly ruins another show.

I love the mix of storylines on GH. They’re providing something for everyone, which is why I think they’re having so much success. It’s a nice balance, which the show didn’t have in the past, when it was The Sonny & Jason Show. Drama, action, romance, humor, and yes, even some camp. You can’t ask for much more as a soap fan.

Frank and Ron are doing an awesome job! There are some people that will find things to complain about, but the fact is GH was on the verge of being canceled in late 2011-early 2012, and they came and saved the show, and it’s now doing better than it has in a number of years. I couldn’t be happier.

I think Y&R lost many viewers as soon as word of Delia’s death got out. I will not abandon my beloved Y&R, but with JFP it has become difficult to watch at times. Its saving grace is the amazing cast.

Y&R will continue to decline as long as they continue hiring incompetent executive producers like JFP and head writers that have proven to write shows into their cancellation. New blood would be better than what we currently have. CBS will come to their senses when the ratings continue to drop. I still wish and hope for Kay Alden to return and write in the likes of creator Bill Bell and his vision. Jeanne Cooper has passed, Jess Walton has all but left the show, Michelle Stafford was angry and states she will never return. WTH has JFP done this time? The same thing she has done on every other show, piss actors off and enforce her need to control and dictate. I would pay a huge amount of money to see this monster get her due!

AGREED!!!!! Of course, that’s what Jill Farren Phelps has ALWAYS done!!!!! As a so-called Executive Producer, JFP doesn’t care who she hurts and who she has to step on…as long as she gets what she wants…no matter who she has to step on.

So True

This just shows how bad Y&R has been lately. It isn’t that GH is that good, it is that Y&R is that bad. I hope the new writers can turn Y&R around. Their is no excuse why Y&R should be doing bad in the ratings, with all of the other daytime shows rising. JFP is destroying what Bill Bell made.

Bill Bell died and we are on the way to the funeral for Y&R. GH is doing fine; no need for life support. My DAYS are great!!!

Days was at its best in the 1970s when Bill Bell was writing it…i wish there were more soap writers like him.

Agreed. I watched Days in the 70’s when I was a teenager. It was my first soap.

AWESOME NEWS! GH is a wonderful show with a great history. And the new directions are working. Very good!

Three words for the demise of Y&R. Kill Farren Phelps.! She has done it before and she will do it again. Congrats to G.H. Except for the mobs .GH has been fun to watch. Did I say that ?

Plain and sinple.. Y and R, has old viewers.. That is why, they have 4.5 million viewers. while doing poorly in the 18-34 and 18-49 and soon they gonna get dethrone in the 25-54. I for one am in the 18-34 group lol GH is fast pacing soap, i love that.

Y&R has a lot of viewers from the early 90’s, true, but GH and DOOL have a lot of viewers from the 80’s, They are just late to the scene of getting new young viewers…..WHAT ALL SOAPS DID IN THE LATE 70’s EARLY 80’s.

OOPs, So is B&B lol sorry….

Y&R is terrible..

Y&R has very little entertainment value, no variety, and is stale and now we are to suffer through a dark story engulfing Y&R is sadness and depression with stale stories..

Soaps are entertainment fantasy day time viewing; for entertainment..
Y&R no longer holds entertainment value, it offers depression not entertainment..
I do not want to cry and be depresses/feel sad watching a tv show..
So, I do no longer care to view Y&R which makes me feel sad and ruins my day ..

The stories are very long and go on and on and on to the point of losing interest.
If Y&R were not shown in 32 countries and only shown in USA and Canada as GH, it would be near cancellation..

As a fan of both Y&R and GH, if i miss watching an episode of Y&R no big deal, but I eagerly wait for the next episode of GH every day!!!!

GH deserves it, Y&R obviously deserves to lose those key demos numbers! JFP needs to go!

Congrats gh! It’s been a thrilling ride of drama, comedy and rich storytelling . Both F valentini and r caveralti need to be commended for the work they have done along with a talented writing n directing teams and an all star cast. They worked magic on one life to live and continue to do the same on gh. I am not saying that they always get it right but this team knows how to tie stories characters and the shows history better than anyone. Keep up the great work gh

And to think I was going to give up on GH a few months ago! As for Y&R, if Lyn Marie Latham didn’t kill the show I doubt Phelps can make it any worse. Her ship will sail, too.

I am happy I still have a soap to watch which I enjoy (GH)! The stories have me at the edge of my seat lately! Nicholas saw Robin in the lab (Hurray)! Look out Sabrina but here comes Robin ! Anna & Robert together rocks! Like old times…

What is it with CBS and dead children? Y&R has now killed Delia and Cassie before her. B&b killed Amber’s baby and then killed Steffy’s baby and made her infertile. If people are tuning out it shouldn’t be much of a mystery why. How about some romance, relationships without triangles and skip the dead children.

Not that a childs tragic death is ever a good thing, but its been a story told for years on many shows. And the material had finally given these excellent actors something to exercise their acting chops on.

Please let’s stop killing children for organs, done too many times

Its about time General Hospital beats out Young and the Restless! For number one I have no clue how Y and R is number 1 all the time? General hospital puts Y and R to shame! The only good thing about Young and the restless is JASON! Wish he would come back to GH to be with Sam and Danny! Cheers!

They all are beating YawneR in entertainment. Y&R is just lucky.

Stopped watching Y&R after Jeanne Cooper died. Also, it makes me sad to see Steve Burton on Y&R–he belongs on General Hospital. Found his character on Y&R to be boring so I stopped watching. Love General Hospital. I’m addicted.

I watch them both but GH will never be a better soap than Y&R.

I watch them both and I think that people are hating the Delia dying story and are sick of the way everyone treats Adam. The Jack vs. Victor stories are tired and the show is lacking balance. GH on the other hand is fun! I tune in for an escape, not to be depressed.

Love General Hospital since the OLTL actors helped pump up some tired story lines. Great writing with the new team. Excited to see Robin back in the story line! Love Kiki, Silas, and Franco characters. Best soap on TV!

Amen to that!!!
GH Rocks..
Y&R is a copycat of GH
And it still suckssss!!!

Nancy Lee Grahn’s Star-Studded ALS Fundraiser Reveals “I’ll Be There” Video Featuring Soap Opera Notables

Talk about your impressive line-up! It’s a soap fans dream and for a great cause. General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) is prepping her one-night only ALS fundraiser which will feature many of her friends and co-stars.

The benefit is set for May 4th in Glendale, California. Slated to participate are Genie Francis, Jane Elliot, Peter Bergman, Maurice Benard, Eileen Davidson, Thorsten Kaye, Michelle Stafford, Stephen Nichols, Rena Sofer, Jason Thompson, Kelly Monaco, Melissa Claire Egan, Maura West, Kristina Wagner, Gregory Harrison, Trevor St. John, Kate Mansi, Kirsten Storms, Cynthia Watros, and many others.

On Wednesday, Grahn took to her social media and released an “I’ll be there” video shout-out featuring, Monaco, Elliot, Bergman, Bernard, West, Harrison, St. John and more. In a touching and important moment in the new video, Michelle Strogny, who is battling ALS, is featured.

Previously, in speaking with Soap Opera Digest on the impetus of the event, Grahn recalled, “I was actually doing Zoom events during Covid and I met this woman that I just fell in love with, Michelle Strojny. At the time, Michelle had been living with ALS for four years. Now, it’s five years. She is a mom of a teenage son, she has the most wonderful husband, and she has been dealing with this [disease] for quite a while. And obviously, there isn’t a cure yet. It’s not survivable yet. But as she says, it’s not incurable. Nothing is; it’s underfunded. But anyway, I just really dug this woman. She is so grounded and filled with grace, and she spends all of her time working to raise money for the cause. We did a fundraiser for her last year and then I thought, ‘You know what? The soaps don’t ever get together to do something for charity.’ Collectively, we have this amazing community and we don’t collectively use it for a good cause, and I think it’s such an easy thing for us to do and we could potentially really make a difference.”

As GH viewers know, Gregory Harrison is playing the character of Gregory Chase, who is also battling ALS in a touching storyline that is currently playing out shedding a light on this disease.

‘General Hospital’ Writer Shannon Peace Let Go, and Shares on Sprina: “One of My Only Regrets is to Not Have the Opportunity to Develop That ‘Ship’ Further”

As General Hospital’s new head writing team of Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahy gets off the ground and running, there are still changes a foot on the writing team.

Now comes word via breakdown writer Shannon Peace that she is no longer on contract with the long-running ABC soap heading into its 61st season. Peace shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram, thanking the fans, and the show for the opportunity and the importance of diversity in the writers room.

Peace began, “After almost 3 years on staff and 106 episodes penned, I am no longer on contract with General Hospital. Writing for this country’s longest running television serial drama has been an education of epic proportions; I will forever be grateful that I earned my WGA card on a daytime fixture that holds memories for so many.” (Peace pictured below with GH EP Frank Valentini and script writer, Charlotte Gibson from about ten months ago).

Shannon added “Even more importantly, as the sole Black breakdown writer (and only POC in the writers room) during my tenure, I pushed for vital interactions and discussions that prioritized inclusion, visibility, and representation”

The writer pointed to the example of vital interaction when in story, “Stella and Portia’s frank July 2022 conversation about the role race played in Esme’s framing of Trina is just one example of the impact I’m gratified to have had.”

Acknowledging former GH co-head writers was also part of Peace’s farewell expressing, “Appreciation to my former bosses, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor – not only taking a chance on me, but for valuing my opinion and championing my voice.”

Many GH fans know that Peace was key to the development of the love story between Trina Robinson and Spencer Cassadine as played by Tabyana Ali and Nicholas Chavez. Shannon gave a special shout-out to ‘Sprina’ fans, “I also want to thank fans who were supportive of my work, especially the recognition of my love for ‘Sprina’. One of my only regrets is not having to develop that ‘ship’ further.”

She concludes her statement with,”In the aftermath of a historic writer’s strike that shed new light on the troubling ways writers are regarded in daytime, my sincere hope is that General Hospital recommits to valuing staff writer efforts and input, with a more intentional focus on diverse viewpoints — and thrives for another 60 years.”

Accompanying her post, Shannon added, “Thank you all for the love and support these last few years. I hope GH fans get all they hope for and more!”

So, what do you think about GH not renewing Shannon’s contract? Will there be more continued changes afoot? What do you think is the future of ‘Sprina’ anyway at this point as viewers wait to see if Nicholas Chavez officially returns to the show?  Comment below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Learns Britt Died and Tells Anna He Has Been Working For Cates Since November 2021

On the Tuesday, March 26th of General Hospital, Anna (Finola Hughes) and the viewers learn about where Jason (Steve Burton) has been for over two and half years. However, Jason gets some news of his own.

Anna is visiting Jason at the PCPD interrogation room. She asks him if he shot Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), which he flatly denies. Anna believes him, but she tells Jason it doesn’t matter, because video footage shows him on the roof at the time of the shooting

When talk turns to Jason not willing to speak without his lawyer present, Anna can’t grasp why Jason would instead spend an hour alone talking with John Cates (Adam J. Harrington).

Photo: ABC

It is then that Anna brings up that John went by “Jagger” and that the two of them knew each other in high school. Jason doesn’t recall much of his time in high school following his brain injury, but then he gets furious realizing John knew about “Jason’s” past. That is when Jason slams the table and tells Anna, “I’ve been working for John Cates since November 2021.”

Next, Jason explains further that he has been working as an informant for the FBI. Anna wants to know how this came about and he tells her that after the tunnel collapsed, and he couldn’t make it to Britt (Kelly Thiebaud)… all of a sudden he sees Anna’s face drop.  Anna is the first person to tell him that Britt died and was murdered. She tells Jason the killer is in custody, but he continues to be shocked, overwhelmed with tears welling up in his eyes. Realizing he has to pivot to save his life, Jason continues telling Anna how he wound up working with John.

Jason explains that after the tunnel collapse in Greece, FBI agents grabbed him and placed him under arrest and took him to Quantico where he met John. At Quantico, John played a recording of RICO violations and offered Jason a deal if he agreed to be an informant against Pikeman, the illegal arms dealer.

Anna hears from Jason that he thinks Pikeman is selling illegal arms to anyone flagged by the NSA but has ties to the WSB which they needed a civilian to infiltrate their organization as a military soldier, a mercenary.

Jason tells Anna he was a part of the team brought into eliminate Sonny (Maurice Benard). Every time an attempt was made on Sonny’s life over the last two years, a different team was sent to do the job. Anna gets furious when she learns that John told Jason his job was to kill Sonny and she was with John at the warehouse that night. Jason ensured the sniper missed Sonny and left the rifle behind. However, they were supposed to meet an extraction team. Before he was shot, Dante saw it was Jason on the roof and when he turned around with his hands over his head, Dante was shot by the other guy. Jason says if Dante dies, he’ll be charged with capital murder and then will be useless to the FBI.

Meanwhile, John visits Bobbie’s and runs into Carly (Laura Wright). She learns Jason is in custody and is going to head to the PCPD. Before she does, Carly has some words with Cates when she learns not only does John have a vendetta against Sonny, but Jason too.  Carly tells John he should recuse himself from the case.

So, what did you think about the moment when Jason learned Britt died? What do you think of Jason’s return storyline thus far and what we learned about Jagger/Jason and more? Comment below. But first, check out a moment from today’s GH with Jason and Anna.
