General Hospital Setting Their Sights On Mid-July Return To Production

Photo: JPI

ABC’s General Hospital has announced tentative plans to restart production amidst the coronavirus pandemic in mid-July according to a report on Friday via Deadline.

That means that three of the four network soaps will have returned or are targeting returns next month.  The Bold and the Beautiful after a one-day start, put a temporary halt to production to ensure accurate COVID-19 testing protocols were in place, resumed production on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, The Young and the Restless revealed plans to start production back after the 4th of July holiday weekend, and its projected return is July 6th.

Now with GH’s plans to come back to production mid-July, viewers could start to see new episodes this summer of their favorite soaps.  Days of our Lives, is not currently back in production and has no need to rush back; given that they already have episodes in the can till the fall.

However, this start date for GH is fluid, given the LA Country cases for COVID-19 have been on the rise, and the number one county in America for most new cases.  Stay tuned for more updates in this developing situation.

So, excited to hear that GH is planning on taping new episodes in a few weeks? Comment below.

Looking forward to seeing it.

Meanwhile, it’s been a solid week of ACTUAL General Hospital episodes this week.

Even saw Franco today.

NOT Frodd, the actual Franco.

Hope the GH writers have been watching these reruns and realize that THIS is what they should be trying to write. And stop listening to Valentini and his vanity crusade to reanimate the corpse of OLTL.

GH films 3 months prior to episode realise..
So- it would be aired mid-October.
whoa looong time..

GH can actually film 3 WEEKS, not months, before air date. Typically, they are around 5-6 weeks, but get to around 3 after summer and Christmas hiatus periods.

Then there is DOOL which films 6 months prior to episode release

Pretty sure those Days (pardon the pun) are over.

Ironically, the only time the 8 months ahead taping schedule ever proved useful was right now, because it allowed DOOL to remain on the air with “new” episodes for months after the other three were in rerun city.

Of course with sports also out of commission, and Days NOT taking the usual breaks for various tennis & golf tournaments (let alone the two weeks off for the Olympics that would have come later in the summer) those episodes are now actually running a few days “ahead” of schedule. So assuming they go back into production in July, they might be able to roll out new episodes just in time for the backlog to run out. But there’s no way that they’re going back to the old 6-8 months ahead taping schedule anytime soon. Hopefully not ever…. makes it too hard to get rid of storylines that aren’t working.

I’m keeping my fingers cross, I’m missing my GH family so much.

Me too! 🙁

During the hiatus, Frank has been uncharacteristically quiet. Now would be an ideal time for him to be making interviews to build up interest in the show.

Hopefully, they make some adjustments and don’t try to pick up exactly where they left off.

This won’t happen. Numbers are spiking again and LA county has the highest of any US county. They would be wise to wait until September or October to start. Then premiere new episodes starting Jan. 4. They would have some banked and should have protocols better set for the work environment.

I am so excited to finally hear this! I hope that date sticks or is moved to earlier. Will be soooo happy to have new episodes to watch.

I must say, however, that the older repeats they have been showing lately, have help me understand more about the show from before I started watching.

Still, nothing like your favorites back with new shows!

As much as I love GH and want you all back; but only if it’s safe to do so… I’ve been watching since the 70’s and if any time is slowed down, or anyone has missed any, it’s not hard to catch up, with any of it. I guess if we don’t get to see it until Fall; it will give us all something to do through Winter, and all the Hallmark Christmas movies, that is if there in or going to do any production. They’ve been showing reruns too! To all of from the show, just stay safe, and remember, I think we’ll all still be waiting here for you. Ps this such a good chance for us all to get to know you all alot better; by hearing all your stories about what your up too, and watching and hearing about your families……

Look forward to GH returning with new episodes! When new episodes return, I hope they do some flashback sequences (like they had been doing the last couple of months of new episodes) to remind us what was going on. Great photo of Monica and the boys.

Although I don’t watch GH, (I like the rest of the world watched during the Luke and Laura heyday) I was wondering how any soap is going to return to “normal” what with mandatory mask wearing and social distancing rules still in affect. No fight scenes, face slaps, kissing/sex sciences. I am a Y&R and B&B watcher since the late 80’s and last we saw on Y&R Nick and Phyllis were always going at it like dogs in heat. I wonder if and how that is going to take place now. The same goes for Brooke on B&B. I don’t really recall her not having any kind of physical contact with a man. Mind you I am not complaining by any means, I enjoy my shows as well as everyone else. But I am just wondering how they are going to go about it and be germ free. Thanks for listening to my rant and happy viewing to all!!!

The Young and the Restless and General Hospital Actress and Writer, Meg Bennett, Passes Away at 75

Meg Bennett, who had played Julia Newman and later became a writer for the top-rated daytime drama, The Young and the Restless has died at the age of 75.  The news comes from her family who shared that she lost her battle to cancer back on April 11th.

Daytime fans remember fondly, Meg’s portrayal of Victor’s (Eric Braeden)first wife. Bennett joined the show in 1980, after her first soap stint for two years in the role of Liza Walton on Search for Tomorrow.

Impressed by her story notes, the late Bill Bell, then head writer of Y&R, had Meg doing double duty acting and writing on the show from 1983-1987. When he decided to write off the character of Julia, he also wanted Meg to stick around as a writer.  Not only did this begin a whole other daytime career for Bennett, but she was not done playing Julia either. Throughout the decades, Julia would still come back to Genoa City for a visit. Most recently, Y&R fans saw Julia in 2018, and again in 2020.

Bennett also appeared on Santa Barbara and was a writer on that show as well from 1991-1993. She played the role of Megan Richardson. It was next that Meg had her longest writing stint coming to ABC’s General Hospital. Meg wrote for GH from 1993-2011.

In 1995, Bennett won her first Daytime Emmy for writing and her personal life changed after falling in love with nine-time Daytime Emmy winner, former GH head writer, Bob Guza Jr. In addition, GH also utilized Bennett for her acting skill when she was cast as the villainess Allegra Montenegro.  Meg and Bog Guza were officially married in 2004 and purchased a home once owned by Boris Karloff and Gregory Peck.

Additionally, Meg wrote for The Bold and the Beautiful 1987-1989 and later served as a executive story consultant to Brad Bell from 2002-2004.  She also wrote for Sunset Beach, Generations and GH: Night Shift throughout her writing career. She went on to win five WGA Awards for GH and Santa Barbara.

Meg is survived by her husband of 19 years, Robert Guza Jr., two stepdaughters, four grandchildren, a brother and a sister.
