General Hospital's Laura Wright Named Power Performance Of The Week!

This past week on General Hospital saw many gripping and heartbreaking moments as friends, families, and even some enemies, grappled with the news that Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) was shot and lost in the deep waters of Port Charles!  While the body was never recovered, for all intent and purposes, to most of the citizens of the town, he is believed to be dead.

However, the performance that to us stood out among all the rest was that of Laura Wright as Carly Corinthos Jacks, who tries to come to grips that her best friend, protector, and confidante, Jason, is gone!  In a stunning scene with Maurice Benard (Sonny), Carly is told by her ex that Jason has been shot and that he is gone.   At first her reaction is denial, then to lash out at Sonny who reveals he needs to go see Trey to try and get Kate/Connie committed. Carly angrily replies, “You have spent all of thirty minutes mourning the guy who dedicated his life to you!”  Ouch, that hit Sonny where it hurts.  Later in the scene, Carly realizes she is not being fair to Sonny and the two of them share a heartfelt sad moment grieving the loss of their dear friend.  Wright’s scenes continued on with remembering how Jason raised Michael as a child to a listening Todd Manning (Roger Howarth), and later in heart-tugging scenes talking to her son, Michael (Chad Duell) about the man that was so instrumental in their lives.

Once again, Laura Wright proves why she is one of the top actresses of the genre, who demonstrated through these scenes that she is adept and delivering raw, realistic, vulnerable and strong emotions, and just like Carly, made all of us at home mourn the loss of Jason! That is why On-Air On-Soaps is naming Laura Wright – The Power Performance of the Week!

After the jump, watch the key powerful scenes and let us know what you thought of Daytime Emmy winner Wright’s performance!  Could these scenes be her Emmy reel for next year?  Weigh-in!

she is a gem……..I have watched her since first seeing her on “Loving” as Ali……….

Laura Wright rocked those scenes!!

totally agree, brought me to tears!

I totally agree. Laura Wright (as Carly) did an incredible job of showing disbelief and then intense pain over the loss of her dearest friend, Jason. She certainly had me crying, her raw emotion is matched by none, and I do believe she can use these scenes to garner her an emmy nod for sure!!!! Kudos Laura Wright on a job VERY WELL DONE!!!!!

I am sorry i don’t agree with this. I saw Ms Wrights performance and while outstanding(and it most likely will be her Emmy reel) i felt the performance of Florencia Lozano who plays Tea Delgado on General Hospital was sensational!. She was riveting in the scenes with Roger Howarth in the police interrogation room when she asked him about the baby swap. She delivered a calm riveting tour DE force performance that i find sensational. She made me feel her pain at the loss of a child she thought was hers for four months and the anger and disappointment in her ex husband Todd Manning. She brought chills up my spine when at the end she says to Todd “If you did do this and i think given the opportunity you would do this for me the MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL” Ms Lozano brought it home. I have never been much of a fan but with this performance she had me hooked. I thought it was a much much better performance then Ms Wrights. While i felt carlys pain at loosing Jason i could not feel much else or feel any sympathy because of who the subject matter was Jason a hitman for the mob. With Tea it was about a baby that she lost and one that was given to her that she thought was hers but was not. That was more relevant and had more meaning for me as a parent then crying over the loss of a Mob Hitman. Also relevant in Ms Lozanos scene was the reaction of Todd kneeling down near the chair tears coming to his eyes as she spoke those word MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL Todd closed his eyes and moaned in pain slightly. What a performance all around for ME the performance of the week and performers of the week are Florencia Lozano and Roger Howarth. Sorry i totally disagree on your pick.

Both ladies did well. But each had their scenes during two different weeks. They were not, therefore, in “competition” for the the title “The Power Performance of the Week.”

I agree with everything you said about Florencia Lozano performance in those scenes at the PCPD with Roger Howarth. I will even go a step farther and mention her performance in the hospital when she saw the baby was alright , and tried to approach her son(Sam’s Baby) and didn’t know why she couldn’t get her baby and leave. The scenes when she asked to say goodbye to the baby broke my heart. That was Power Acting to me and Poweful Performances. Florencia is such a Great Actress. She brings it everytime. Laura Wright is a good actress i’m just not a fan of the character/Carly that she plays.

I agree I thought Tea was great I hope she comes back to GH I DO miss my OLTL family!

I agree. Laura Wriight is a fabulous actress and brings Carly to life. However…I actually agreed with her character’s initial reaction to Sonny…I expected much more devastation from him…he mourned Robin more than Jason. To segue from telling her about Jason and then switching gears to Kate/Connie seemed a bit emotionally removed. But I digress! 😉 Yay…Laura! Great performance!

Love her!

While I only follow Laura via Twitter, I get the impression that Carly is Laura with the volume turned up. What say you, Michael…

If anyone other than Laura Wright played Carly, I would LOATHE the character. She is a vindictive, shrewish , mob lovin, hateful hypocritical, character. But Laura Wright is such a luminous genuine performer she somehow transcends all of Carly’s quirks. At some point , this show is coing ti HAVE to show some growth in this caractère. But really do they? Susan Lucci played the same self.involved teenager well into her 60’s. People grow and learn and change…in life…and if they don’t.on soaps…why would we want to watch the same.crap for 40 years??

Love Laura Wright. She always, always puts everything into her scenes and it shows, no matter what part she is playing, even bystander, she’s always totally into that moment. Which makes me ask why she has been seemingly demoted from lead to supporting, with no real story of her own. She deserves so much more and her latest is an example of why she can do wonders if given the opportunity and the proper writing. She’s being wasted, IMO. She should be in more scenes with MB because they are gold together, something the new regime seems to want to dismiss, for some reason.

She is awesome! Those scenes were great! Anytime she is with Jason or talking about hime she is great! Carly and Laura are my one of my GH favorites. As was Jason and Steve, and Spinelli and Bradford and Maxie and Kirsten. I am sooooo missing Jason/Steve.

I am starting to think Carly and Todd could be a great couple. I am and was a CarJax fan and was hoping they would find their way back together… but Carly and Todd could be a phenomenal couple if written correctly. They are both very talented and could knock it out of the park. They need to continue to take it slowly and creep up to it. I’d like to see each them make each other better people in the process. It’s fun to see Todd’s caring side with Carly and not just with Starr.

I whole heartedly agree with the power performance designation and want Laura to have many more opportunities to have more of them!

Think they’ve all been knocking it out of the park. I’m sure Steve Burton’s Jason will be missed. I’m glad they left his death unresolved. Hope he returns after some time away from the role.

Can you say Emmy reel!!!!!!!

I loved her performance! She is a terrific actress and she seems like a such a nice person in real life as well.

Daytime is fortunate to still have her! LW is marvelous!

Loving GH but I sure miss my OLTL family so gladsome of them have come to GH! Watched AMC,OLTL and GH ever since I was a young girl and I’m 55 now! Funny I don’t seem to miss AMC but I DO miss OLTL but I was GH everyday too. I still get SoapNet on my DirecTv so I tape 3 yr old OLTL episodes.

OMG! Me too. I thought I was the only one taping classic OLTL on SOAPnet. I watched all ABC soaps but don’t miss AMC. It really went downhill its last few years on air. All part of ABC’s plan to destroy their soaps. Guess they underestimated OLTL & GH.

Don’t overlook Leslie Charleson. Her scenes with Michael were extremely powerful. Proves once again what a terrific dynamic she brings to the canvas. Wish TPTB would use her more.

I agree with you I would love to see more of Monica on screen instead of Starr, Kristina, Todd, John, Luke, Sam, and Kate/Connie. Leslie Charleson can carry a major story and it’s time we see it from the producers, and writers of this show. Stop having her onscreen twice a month, other shows respect their veteran stars and they or front and center with stories. Leslie has been a forgotten star on this show to long.

Nancy Lee Grahn’s Star-Studded ALS Fundraiser Reveals “I’ll Be There” Video Featuring Soap Opera Notables

Talk about your impressive line-up! It’s a soap fans dream and for a great cause. General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) is prepping her one-night only ALS fundraiser which will feature many of her friends and co-stars.

The benefit is set for May 4th in Glendale, California. Slated to participate are Genie Francis, Jane Elliot, Peter Bergman, Maurice Benard, Eileen Davidson, Thorsten Kaye, Michelle Stafford, Stephen Nichols, Rena Sofer, Jason Thompson, Kelly Monaco, Melissa Claire Egan, Maura West, Kristina Wagner, Gregory Harrison, Trevor St. John, Kate Mansi, Kirsten Storms, Cynthia Watros, and many others.

On Wednesday, Grahn took to her social media and released an “I’ll be there” video shout-out featuring, Monaco, Elliot, Bergman, Bernard, West, Harrison, St. John and more. In a touching and important moment in the new video, Michelle Strogny, who is battling ALS, is featured.

Photo: ABC

Previously, in speaking with Soap Opera Digest on the impetus of the event, Grahn recalled, “I was actually doing Zoom events during Covid and I met this woman that I just fell in love with, Michelle Strojny. At the time, Michelle had been living with ALS for four years. Now, it’s five years. She is a mom of a teenage son, she has the most wonderful husband, and she has been dealing with this [disease] for quite a while. And obviously, there isn’t a cure yet. It’s not survivable yet. But as she says, it’s not incurable. Nothing is; it’s underfunded. But anyway, I just really dug this woman. She is so grounded and filled with grace, and she spends all of her time working to raise money for the cause. We did a fundraiser for her last year and then I thought, ‘You know what? The soaps don’t ever get together to do something for charity.’ Collectively, we have this amazing community and we don’t collectively use it for a good cause, and I think it’s such an easy thing for us to do and we could potentially really make a difference.”

As GH viewers know, Gregory Harrison is playing the character of Gregory Chase, who is also battling ALS in a touching storyline that is currently playing out shedding a light on this disease.

‘General Hospital’ Writer Shannon Peace Let Go, and Shares on Sprina: “One of My Only Regrets is to Not Have the Opportunity to Develop That ‘Ship’ Further”

As General Hospital’s new head writing team of Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahy gets off the ground and running, there are still changes a foot on the writing team.

Now comes word via breakdown writer Shannon Peace that she is no longer on contract with the long-running ABC soap heading into its 61st season. Peace shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram, thanking the fans, and the show for the opportunity and the importance of diversity in the writers room.

Peace began, “After almost 3 years on staff and 106 episodes penned, I am no longer on contract with General Hospital. Writing for this country’s longest running television serial drama has been an education of epic proportions; I will forever be grateful that I earned my WGA card on a daytime fixture that holds memories for so many.” (Peace pictured below with GH EP Frank Valentini and script writer, Charlotte Gibson from about ten months ago).

Shannon added “Even more importantly, as the sole Black breakdown writer (and only POC in the writers room) during my tenure, I pushed for vital interactions and discussions that prioritized inclusion, visibility, and representation”

The writer pointed to the example of vital interaction when in story, “Stella and Portia’s frank July 2022 conversation about the role race played in Esme’s framing of Trina is just one example of the impact I’m gratified to have had.”

Acknowledging former GH co-head writers was also part of Peace’s farewell expressing, “Appreciation to my former bosses, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor – not only taking a chance on me, but for valuing my opinion and championing my voice.”

Many GH fans know that Peace was key to the development of the love story between Trina Robinson and Spencer Cassadine as played by Tabyana Ali and Nicholas Chavez. Shannon gave a special shout-out to ‘Sprina’ fans, “I also want to thank fans who were supportive of my work, especially the recognition of my love for ‘Sprina’. One of my only regrets is not having to develop that ‘ship’ further.”

She concludes her statement with,”In the aftermath of a historic writer’s strike that shed new light on the troubling ways writers are regarded in daytime, my sincere hope is that General Hospital recommits to valuing staff writer efforts and input, with a more intentional focus on diverse viewpoints — and thrives for another 60 years.”

Accompanying her post, Shannon added, “Thank you all for the love and support these last few years. I hope GH fans get all they hope for and more!”

So, what do you think about GH not renewing Shannon’s contract? Will there be more continued changes afoot? What do you think is the future of ‘Sprina’ anyway at this point as viewers wait to see if Nicholas Chavez officially returns to the show?  Comment below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Learns Britt Died and Tells Anna He Has Been Working For Cates Since November 2021

On the Tuesday, March 26th of General Hospital, Anna (Finola Hughes) and the viewers learn about where Jason (Steve Burton) has been for over two and half years. However, Jason gets some news of his own.

Anna is visiting Jason at the PCPD interrogation room. She asks him if he shot Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), which he flatly denies. Anna believes him, but she tells Jason it doesn’t matter, because video footage shows him on the roof at the time of the shooting

When talk turns to Jason not willing to speak without his lawyer present, Anna can’t grasp why Jason would instead spend an hour alone talking with John Cates (Adam J. Harrington).

Photo: ABC

It is then that Anna brings up that John went by “Jagger” and that the two of them knew each other in high school. Jason doesn’t recall much of his time in high school following his brain injury, but then he gets furious realizing John knew about “Jason’s” past. That is when Jason slams the table and tells Anna, “I’ve been working for John Cates since November 2021.”

Next, Jason explains further that he has been working as an informant for the FBI. Anna wants to know how this came about and he tells her that after the tunnel collapsed, and he couldn’t make it to Britt (Kelly Thiebaud)… all of a sudden he sees Anna’s face drop.  Anna is the first person to tell him that Britt died and was murdered. She tells Jason the killer is in custody, but he continues to be shocked, overwhelmed with tears welling up in his eyes. Realizing he has to pivot to save his life, Jason continues telling Anna how he wound up working with John.

Jason explains that after the tunnel collapse in Greece, FBI agents grabbed him and placed him under arrest and took him to Quantico where he met John. At Quantico, John played a recording of RICO violations and offered Jason a deal if he agreed to be an informant against Pikeman, the illegal arms dealer.

Anna hears from Jason that he thinks Pikeman is selling illegal arms to anyone flagged by the NSA but has ties to the WSB which they needed a civilian to infiltrate their organization as a military soldier, a mercenary.

Jason tells Anna he was a part of the team brought into eliminate Sonny (Maurice Benard). Every time an attempt was made on Sonny’s life over the last two years, a different team was sent to do the job. Anna gets furious when she learns that John told Jason his job was to kill Sonny and she was with John at the warehouse that night. Jason ensured the sniper missed Sonny and left the rifle behind. However, they were supposed to meet an extraction team. Before he was shot, Dante saw it was Jason on the roof and when he turned around with his hands over his head, Dante was shot by the other guy. Jason says if Dante dies, he’ll be charged with capital murder and then will be useless to the FBI.

Photo: ABC

Meanwhile, John visits Bobbie’s and runs into Carly (Laura Wright). She learns Jason is in custody and is going to head to the PCPD. Before she does, Carly has some words with Cates when she learns not only does John have a vendetta against Sonny, but Jason too.  Carly tells John he should recuse himself from the case.

So, what did you think about the moment when Jason learned Britt died? What do you think of Jason’s return storyline thus far and what we learned about Jagger/Jason and more? Comment below. But first, check out a moment from today’s GH with Jason and Anna.
