GH Says Goodbye To Edward Quartermaine And The Beloved John Ingle! – What Did You Think Of The Thanksgiving Episode?

On yesterday’s Thanksgiving episode of General Hospital, the creative team of head writer Ron Carlivati and executive producer Frank Valentini had the task of how to properly give longtime viewers a proper send-off to the patriarch of the bickering and dysfunctional Quartermaine clan, Edward, while at the same time paying their respects to the beloved John Ingle who passed away in September.
In an episode, that we dare say, you had to have reached for the hankies by the end of it, was chock full of emotional moments – big and small, trips down memory lane, and powerful performances, that paid homage to this legacy character and for many on-screen their treasured colleague.
Where do we begin? How about with the heartbreaking and touching performance of one of the best of the best, Jane Elliot (Tracy)! The scenes were Tracy is alone in the family crypt realizing she is the only remaining member of the Quartermaine clan as she stares at the names of Alan, Lila, and now Edward were a startling realization not only to Tracy, but to viewers that the original Q’s are all but gone. And in yet another heart-tugging moment, Ned (Wally Kurth) shows up and hugs his mother who is struggling to come to terms with her “daddy’s” passing. Tracy tells Ned she believes Edward was the glue that held the family together, and wonders what will become of the rest of them. Ned reveals to her, that it is she that is the toughest one of them all.
How wonderful was to see both Wally Kurth and Robin Christopher (Skye) again! And each had some very tender scenes remembering their times with Edward. And how about little Lila Rae? And when Skye takes the little one to see Lila’s namesake in the family crypt? Or, Ned leading the remaining family in a toast, “To Edward! There will never be another one like him!” That toast was preceded by a stunning montage of clips of John Ingle as Edward, which at that point, we reached for the hankies.
Of course, a Quartermaine Thanksgiving wouldn’t be complete without the ruined turkey dinner, and this time thanks to Heather Webber (Robin Mattson) taking Skye hostage at knife point, the feast was decimitated. But not before Heather got her hands on Edward’s will. And after she was carted back to the loony bin, after Alice saved the day, she left us with a cliffhanger shouting, “I know something the Quartermaines don’t know!” This means … that this story is far from over, and only the beginning!
After the traditional bickering and infighting between all the Q’s, and the pizza place they normally order from being closed, mysteriously a stack of pizza boxes shows up at the Q’s front door! And it is at this point that the GH writing team out did themselves! We see the back of Edward watching over his family. And when little Lila Rae said she wanted to eat, the Quartermaine clan recited in unison’s Edward’s famous turkey day line, “First we sing, Then we eat!” And as the spirit of Edward began to sing “We Gather Together”, the rest of the family followed suit. But if that was not enough, there was one more touching moment to reveal! We next saw the backs of Edward and his beloved Lila in her wheelchair beside him. They were finally reunited. And as the family begins to indulge in Thanksgiving pizza, we see Edward and Lila, who has now gotten got out of her wheelchair, hand and hand as made they make their way up the Quartermaine staircase to heaven together. That was followed up by the in memoriam title card which read: “In Loving Memory … John Ingle 1928-2012.”

It was a beautiful tribute, I seriously cried through the whole episode. It was hard to say goodbye to John Ingle and Edward Quatermaine. Ron and Frank & the writers did a wonderful job RIP John Ingle & Edward Quatermaine.
Edward Quartermaine And The Beloved John Ingle! – it was the best love end how him and beloved wife walk up the stairs.
The last scene was so perfect, but what would made it better was Alan and Em at the top of the stairs (Like Dixie welcoming Palmer to Heaven on AMC IN 2010).
I also notice the character of Edward was 94, and JI (84) was playing 10 yrs older because DL’s Edward was 2 years younger than DL. Lila and Edward were the same age.
I hope they bring back the spirit of Steve Hardy during the 50th anniversary.
I thought it was perfect. Beautiful tribute to the Q’s and everything they represented… Thanksgiving will never be the same in Port Charles. I did cry & laugh.. and i got a little angry when i realized that they killed off a Q unnecessarily (Alan). Anyway i t was a perfect tribute to Mr Ingle.
Perfect. Just perfect. A fitting farewell to the great John Ingle and Edward.
perfect show…………..GH is on top all the way. No complaints what a perfect ending to a loving greatly appreciated duo on GH…Eadward and Lila…..the most loving couple of many fans………..GH should be #1 something is way off with ratings……..way off.
Having had Stuart Damon so recently on the show, why was he not included? And why do we need to see the Sperminator?
I agree, they could have had Alan there also. Alan see’s A.J. and is apart of the festivities, he follows them up the stairs but slowly walking behind them.
Humm Sperminator?? Would that be Sonny? have not seen the show yet.
Loved the tribute to John Ingle and the Quartermaines getting together (wish there were more of them brought back like Jimmy Lee!!).
The only part I didn’t like was Heather Webber sneaking in – seemed contrived and I don’t think Heather would have taken that chance to go in there and get caught.
I also wish Luke was around for Tracy.

I too wish Luke could have been there. I also think there is a way to have had Alan there. Alan could haunt Tracy again to help make her be the strongest of them all. I too would like to have not seen Heather there, but I see the reason. I am curious where the pizza came from and what is in it! Not sure they should have eaten it. Couldn’t they call Kelly’s and see if Shawn would deliver. Loved having Ned back and wish he could stay for a bit. Couldn’t they work it out that he could be on both GH and DOOL. I have always had mixed feelings about Skye and yet she was good. I would have liked to see more Quartermaine ghosts around. Loved the older scenes and wish they could have done the episode over two days to get more. I would think John Ingle would like it though and it was a very nice tribute to a very talented man! Jane Elliot is always superb! Love the character Tracy! I still think John Paul would be a great Dillion. Again… well done everyone at GH! My favorite was at the end with Edward snd Lila!!!
would have been funny if they said Ned flew in from Salem 🙂 Love that Wally can do double duty and wouldn’t it be great if he could come back for good? His scenes with AJ is just what the Q mansion could use!
I don’t get the Skye thing at all since I remember her from AMC mostly but oh well.

Very well done! It’s an end to a legacy. One orginial Quartermaine left…I will miss all the fights & disagreements they had threw the years..They were a BLAST! I liked seeing Ned. I haven’t seen him in years.. I wonder if he will stick around for a while. Who will take over ELQ now? Tracy or A.J. , maybe Ned, or Michael..With all the fights they had
they still loved each other very much! I liked the last scene when Edward & Lilia were
going up the stairs together & lilia got up out of her wheel-chair….Great scene! And all the flash-backs also.. Edward hugging Tracy etc………The Quatermaines were royalty in Port Charles for so many years….They were the heart of GH!!! I will miss this all for sure… Again a great tribute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay- I only started watching GH like a week ago, but the writers did such a good job of supplying just the right amount of background info on the characters and their relationship that it wasn’t difficult for me, as a newbie, to feel emotionally connected to these characters. I thought the ending was beautiful that I cried. It is one thing to craft a episode to touch long time fans, but it is a remarkable they did it without making newer viewers like me feel left out. I might have missed some of the in jokes, but for the most part I got the richness of the Quartermaine family- the sadness, the humor and the love. Well done.

SPOIKER ALERT: (If you’re reading this prior to watching Edward’s death play out on GH) Just watched the last two days of GH dealing with Edward’s death. Tear-stained cheeks. That about sums it up. It was beautifully written and imaginative; a great mix of vintage Edward clips. The detail that went into shooting this was spectactular; from the hands of the actor playing Edward on his deathbed, to the one playing Edward’s “back” as the family remembered to sing before eating. And then to see such close resemblances playing Edward and Lila going to the stairs and walking up into the light…Breath-taking! Kudos to all invovled in this tender and touching farewell to Edward and John Ingle.
Wonderful episode my gosh put Robin Christopher/Skye back on contract is their anyone more stunning!

I cried like a baby at the end…Lol…so beautiful… well done GH, so well done. Im sure John is smiling up there and Im sure his family thought it was beautiful as well. Just the best , so classy…GH is #1 for reasons like that writing…

I like that Edward “mysteriously” delivered the pizza. It’s like he knew he needed to provide for the family one more time.
I also like that Lila returned and was able to walk upstairs. The new writers did a fantastic job at researching the Q’s Thanksgiving tradition.
Research for the writing team of a soap should be a snap – there’s tons of resource material available- but I think a lot of writers just don’t care or don’t think that we, the fans, do. Between all the Robin/Duke stuff, Edward memories and the Thanksgiving song, it’s clear that they’re doing their homework.. and in turn, we respond positively and with enthusiasm (and I’ve been singing it’s praises to all my friends who I know have watched in the past). After watching Ron’s work on OLTL, I tend to trust that he knows what he’s doing (more often than not anyway, no one’s perfect LOL :)).
A very fitting tribute. Loved every moment. Farewell Edward. You are missed.

Bravo!!! Well done!!! A beautiful tribute to a wonderful man and actor. John always delivered a great performance. I was in tears. The writers delivered a touching ending while still keeping Edward true to character by working his mischief from beyond.
It’s been a long time since something moved me on GH as much as Wednesday’s show did. It was just one emotional scene after another. But the symbolism of Lila standing up out of her wheelchair, and her and Edward walking up the stairs into the light together, that was one of the most beautiful scenes I’ve ever seen. I was reaching for the tissues after it was over. How could you not?
It was a fitting farewell for the Edward character, but also a proper goodbye to Lila as well, since her death on the show in 2004 never resonated with me like it should have, because John Ingle wasn’t on the show at the time. So they gave both characters the send off that they deserved.
It was a brilliantly done show from top to bottom. The production, the writing, the acting, everything was top notch. GH is on fire right now. If you’re not watching for whatever reason, you’re really missing out.

Both Tuesday and Wednesday’s episodes had me in a big wet puddle of tears…Tuesday got me with AJ not being able to say goodbye to Edward (damn you Tracy) but even more with baby Daniel grasping Edward’s finger was so sweet-and Monica breaking the news that Edward had passed away and his last word was Lila..
Now for Wednesday…I could have done without Heather’s lunacy (I loved her return but now she is starting to grate my nerves) especially on this episode. Loved seeing little Lila Rae meet her family-GH should bring Skye and her back for keeps to help re-build the Q clan!
Loved the flashbacks except I would have added a few: Edward and Emily (Amber Tamblyn’s) performing at the Nurses Ball (both times) and a clip seen of Edward and Steve Hardy that got shown during Steve Hardy’s memorial episode that was humorous as they talked about “worry balls” and modern medicine and showed also their mutual respect for each other as well as a deep abiding friendship. Edward said at Steve’s service after this flashback was shown: “Farewell my good, true friend…this time I have the last word.”
And of course the ending to this episode was the one that really opened the floodgates-the mysterious pizza delivery which we all know with wink was Edward’s doing, the family singing “We Gather Together” (per Edward’s tradition) and the best moment of all, Edward and Lila together again walking off into the sunset and heaven together….bravo GH!

Agree about Heather. She has become a cartoon character now; a gimmick. I wish she wasn’t in this episode at all. Too bad because Robin Mattson is so talented and I loved the earlier stint.

Robin Christopher must join full-time. She has that glamor/mystique of the old Hollywood.
I’ve never quite cared for the character but I have to admit I really warmed up to her on Wednesday.
Whose daughter did she end up being? I think she was sort of claimed by every major ABC soap family at one time or another.. 🙂

Wow. I did not get to watch until today & between Wednesday’s B&B w/Stephanie & Brooke, Larry Hagman dying & now this episode. I could just start crying & never stop. The GH episode was wonderful, wish Sam & Danny were there for the “dinner” I just about died when Ned showed up! LOVE him, so funny that he came from “Salem” Skye is as gorgeous as ever & yes, it would have been great to have Luke there too. I am SO glad to see the Quartermaines back! I just wish Edward could have known about Jake & Danny, wish Jason had been there. Well we could wish all day, huh? But great show, GH is better every day.

It was spot on. Ron Carlivati and his writing team were nothing short of brilliant! I cried at various times throughout the episode. When Traci was in the family crypt talking about her father teaching her to drive, I really broke down. It brought back my own memories of my father who passed away in May, teaching me to drive. My favorite was the ending. So incredibly done with Edward singing and he and Lila walking up the stairs to heaven. Just BRILLIANT! The old GH is BACK!!!!
it was funny and touching – and the Heather/knife at Skye’s throat and the scream, the family running and the family discovering the meal ruined… again and magically lots of pizza show up (I know Edward must have ordered them ahead of time!) I kept thinking it was like “CLUE”. What fun!

General Hospital’s Adam J. Harrington Weighs-in On John and Carly, and How it’s ‘Starting to Get Very Complicated”
On recent episodes of General Hospital, Carly (Laura Wright) came to John “Jagger” Cates (Adam Harrington) rescue as he was beaten down in an assault. Carly put on her “nurses cap,” sort of speak, and got John to his hotel room and watched over to him, to make sure he didn’t lose consciousness.
GH fans also got their first glimpse of what may be a new romance for Carly, if she and John continue to bond. If John and Carly were to have a relationship, it would certainly have a ripple effect with Jason (Steve Burton) and Sonny (Maurice Benard).
Adam J. Harrington shared his view on the scenes and what might be next between the two. Speaking to Soap Opera Digest, Harrington shared, “I thought it was written in a way where there’s an understanding and a respect between them both. I don’t think there was any moment where she was not aware that he’s an FBI agent, and there was no moment that he wasn’t aware of her history and relationship to other people in the town. I really liked it. I was really looking forward to shooting it with Laura and we had a really nice time shooting it.”

When Carly and John part ways, it seems there were some romantic sparks, as Harrington puts it, “Isn’t that interesting that sometimes with people, the one moment they actually show how they feel is when they know there’s an escape hatch. They know they’re about to walk away. So, it’s almost safe in that moment to do it. I thought that was really special about how (the writers) handled John and Carly. Even the music in that scene was beautifully done.”
Where is this all heading? Conflict! Internally and professionally, and as Adam explains, “Who Carly was to John on paper as just a tool to be used as bait is starting to get very complicated.”

General Hospital’s Steve Burton Reveals the Emotional Scene He Almost Could Not Get Through
On a recent episode of General Hospital, Jason received a message from his mother, Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) via a note. The effect it had on Jason’s portrayer, Steve Burton turned out to be quite visceral.
As GH fans know, although Jason’s bio-mom was Susan Moore, he was raised and adopted by Monica. Speaking on his Daily Drama podcast with his co-host and GH co-star, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), Steve shared some insight on the difficulties he had getting through that scene.
Burton shared that in the key moment, “Brooklyn (played by Amanda Setton) came in and that’s where she gave me (Jason) the letter from Monica. That was a very hard scene for me to do. That was a tough one. That was the one time I was almost going to call ‘cut!’ It read ‘Jason, I believe in you.’ I was literally going to walk off the set.”

To clarify and in the story, Monica was saying “I believe in you” and that she knows Jason didn’t shoot Dante (Dominic Zamprogna). Steve added, “It was tough, man. Emotionally, it was a tough scene. It was overwhelming in the moment.”
Steve went on to detail to Anderson, “She (Brook Lynn) pushed it to me and I read it and she was walking out and I had to stop her, but I was so emotional I couldn’t even get it out. And at that point, I’m like, ‘Do I just keep going … or do I just walk off the set right now?’ But, I knew just to stay, because it’s so hard to get back there, once you shut it down. I knew, the next take wasn’t going to be the same.”

It’s clear that Leslie Charleson is so missed on-screen as Monica by all of her castmates, and that Jason and Monica had a very special mother/son relationship throughout the decades on GH.

George Russo to Appear on General Hospital as Carmine Cerullo
Coming up, it looks like Brook Lynn’s (Amanda Setton) grandfather, Carmine Cerullo is headed to Port Charles.
According to casting news from the ABC soap opera, George Russo will take on the role. Russo will tape his episode next week on April 15th and will appear on the May 15th episode of the long-running daytime drama series.
If George looks familiar he has been in numerous primetime television shows and motion pictures including: The Offer. Winning Time, Grand Crew and Shameless.

Longtime GH viewers will recall that Lois’ (Rena Sofer) dad, Carmine, was previously showed up in Port Charles on and off from 1994 to 1996 and was played by John Capudice.
Clearly, it seems that Carmine will be a part of Chase (Josh Swickard) and Brook Lynn’s wedding. Will it go off without a hitch? Are you looking forward to it? Stay tuned.
