GH’s Beloved Susan Brown Passes Away At 86
Heartbreaking news to report on Friday. Susan Brown, who played General Hospital’s Gail Baldwin has passed away at the age of 86.
Page Six reported that Susan died after her battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Kin Shriner, who played Brown’s on-screen stepson, Scott Baldwin tweeted the news stating: “Sad to say one of my best friends and costars Susan Brown passed away today she played Gail Baldwin @GeneralHospital my mother R.I.P. Susan I will miss all our laughs.”
Over the last 24 hours many GH stars past and present and behind the scenes creatives have shared their thoughts and condolences for Brown. Here is just a sampling:
Lynn Herring (Lucy Coe) tweeted: “I am so honored to have worked with Susan, an amazing woman and the only one I knew who could keep you in line @kinshriner ! We will all miss her so!”
Jackie Zeman (Bobbie Spencer) responded: “Kin I am so sorry for your loss. I will miss Susan too. She was so very special, on set and in friendship. I remember all the good times we shared on our @GeneralHospital #GH lunch breaks at at her amazing dinner parties at her beautiful home. RIP Susan + God Bless. @kinshriner”
Ron Carlivati, (the former head writer of GH, now at DAYS) tweeted: I loved loved loved Gail Baldwin. She was so real and so natural and so self-possessed. Loved her relationship with Monica. RIP Susan Brown. You made a huge impact on my 10 year old self. #gh
Wally Kurth expressed: “I loved Susan Brown. What a laugh she had. What a radiant soul. I wish I had had the opportunity to work with her more. RIP Susan.”
Wendy Riche (former GH EP) tweeted: “RIP Susan Brown We cherish the love and laughter you brought to the General Hospital Family and to @kinshriner”
Brown came on to the Port Charles canvas in 1977. She was last seen in 2004 in the role.

I am so very sorry to hear this news. I loved Susan Brown. I remember her very well. She was terrific as the much loved Gail, Lee’s wife and Monica’s mentor.

Ms. Brown personified class and sophistication as Dr Gail Adamson Baldwin. She and Peter Hansen were an amazing couple. GH in the late 1970s and early 1980s was prime soap wonder. I am cheered Ms. Brown is so well remembered.

I remember first seeing her on “Bright Promise”. I wonder if GH will mark her passing as they did when the actor who played Lee Baldwin died? Hope so. She was marvelous.

Both Miss Brown—and her character of Gail Adamson Baldwin—-were the absolute epitome of timeless class and effortless elegance!!!! I always relished “their” screentime, especially when she was paired with the dashing Peter Hansen…what a beautiful, dignified and admirable couple they were….they sure don’t make them like that anymore! And more’s the pity for that….I certainly hope this lovely lady receives a GH salute that befits her many years of wonderful contributions to the show…even now, her character is still sorely missed! Rest well, Miss Brown…..Your graceful Gail shall be forever fondly remembered by those of us who enjoyed “her” presence during Port Charles’ finest hours!

I don’t watch GH but I read many mainstream news and entertainment websites reporting her passing. That is very nice to see.
Indeed it is, Blake! The sad news of Miss Brown’s death was even widely reported in the British press, which I thought was quite a tribute to her popularity and success! I guess it just goes to show that at one time, GH was a genuine global hit with its classic stars having great name recognition far beyond the US shores.
As someone who watched Susan Brown’s entire GH tenure, I feel compelled to pay my respects… She was a great actress, to be sure, and she had great chemistry with the late Peter Hansen, Leslie Charleson, Kin Shriner, and others in her role as Gail.
BTW, in the highlighted scene, in which we last saw Lee and Gail, Leslie Charleson looked radiant, perhaps her best look ever, even besting her early Pearl Drops Toothpaste commercial! (Check it out on youtube.)
Gail was a reliable character with a deep moral center. Had Ms. Brown’s talents been used to better effect, she could easily have filled the role of matriarch. Still, Gail was such a comforting presence, a wise and caring persona. We need more of that on soaps — and in real life.

Terrible news! What a voice, what poise! I remember when she first appeared on the scene as Monica’s mentor (then played by Patsy Rahn). I don’t know if anyone else watched GH during this period… huge cast exoduses (Augusta, Kira, Joel, Henry Pinkham, Lucille Weeks, Jane Dawson, Jim Hobart, etc.) and then a period of in-and-out characters (Caroline & Bobby Chandler, Pat Lambert, The Vinings, Jessie’s niece, Kate). Once the show settled down a bit, it was a joy to follow. The addition of Susan Brown and Gerald Gordon was icing on the cake. Susan’s Gail stood out amongst a crush of new characters that came on during this period. What a loss to daytime!
Hello Rickie: I was watching during those years, too. The “huge exodus” you mentioned saddened me. The “in-and-out” characters were somewhat unsettling, although I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions Diana Taylor (Valerie Starrett) and Peter Taylor (Craig Huebing) had with Pat Lambert! So glad you mentioned Gerald Gordon as Dr. Marc Dante, another GH character I enjoyed. And your honoring of Susan Brown’s “voice” and “poise” is apropos.
Nice tributes, one and all, and the memories on some of you, wow! I’m in awe! Whether it was McCain or Aretha, one’s passing does tend to bring out the best in us, as we give that person their due. Let’s hope that Susan Brown and her family knew this outpouring of affection and respect existed long before her passing, as she clearly enriched so many lives along the way. Where I felt that GH came up a little short in Peter Hansen’s tribute, the reprise of Carly Schroeder notwithstanding (more, please!), I hope they really pull out all the stops for Gail’s send-off. The soap format is tailor-made for being able to reminisce and pay homage to those that have given this genre so much—the material has already written itself via archived clips and will no doubt write itself once again through the genuine emotion and fondness the writers and cast have for their fallen colleague. If only we could all go out with a highlight reel! GH, you have a chance to make that so for Susan Brown, please do her justice.
Great actress, beautiful woman
Elegant, beautiful Susan Brown is so iconic to me. I remember her not so much from GENERAL HOSPITAL, but from a short lived soap that would follow GENERAL HOSPITAL called THE YOUNG MARRIEDS in the mid 1960s. Susan played sophisticated Ann Reynolds, a woman unhappily married to a difficult blind man, Walter. I feel like they lived in an art studio and had a WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLF kind of relationship. After the soap was cancelled DARK SHADOWS took it’s place where I transferred my affections to a young actress named Alexandra Moltke who played Victoria Winters. Both these women had the most luxurious brunette hair, but it was only Susan who was able to capitalize on hers with her memorable Wanda the Witch commercials, promoting hair spray. Her beautiful, distinctive speaking voice will be missed.

51st Annual Daytime Emmy Award Nominations: CBS Soaps Score Most, Eric Braeden, Dick Van Dyke, Guy Pearce Receive Nods
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) have officially announced on Friday, the full list of nominees for the 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
While Thursday brought with it four reveals of the nominees in the Outstanding Daytime Drama, Talk Show Host, Lead Actor and Actress categories (as presented by various entertainment news programs), today’s nominations include all the other categories not previously announced.
The Daytime Emmy Awards telecast is set to be presented live on Friday night, June 7, at 8 PM EDT /delayed PT, on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+. This will mark the 18th time that CBS has broadcast the Daytime Emmys.

In addition, The Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle Emmy Awards will be presented on Saturday, June 8 at t9 PM ET/6 PM PT and streamed on The Emmys apps and at watch.TheEmmys.tv. The ceremonies will take place at the Westin Bonaventure Los Angeles.
Television icon, Dick Van Dyke has received his first-ever Daytime Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Guest Performer category for his touching portrayal of Timothy Robicheaux on Peacock’s Days of our Lives. The nomination makes Van Dyke the oldest Daytime Emmy nominee in history at 98-years-old. In addition, motion picture and TV star, Guy Pearce, is also nominated as Guest Performer for his longtime role as Mike Young in the reboot of Neighbours.
Speaking of Neighbours, the Australian soap opera also received its first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Daytime Drama Series now that its a revival can be streamed on Amazon Freevee. In addition, The Young and the Restless iconic, Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) received his first Daytime Emmy nomination in more than 20 years in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category.

In the Daytime Drama series categories, CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless each scored 12 nominations more than any other show. Leading the acting nominations was B&B, who landed 7 performers in the various categories, a first in its 37-year history.
In a statement, Adam Sharp, President & CEO, NATAS expressed, “We are happy to once again honor the creative talent both in front of and behind the camera of America’s favorite Daytime programs. We look forward to celebrating the icons who enliven the days of audiences across the country.”

Brent Stanton, Head of Daytime, NATAS added, “Producing the Daytime Emmys is a labor of love for all of us at NATAS. The huge popularity of these shows continues to be must-see viewing for their fans.” NATAS also revealed that Lifetime Achievement Honorees, Hosts, Presenters, and Silver and Gold Circle honorees will be revealed at a later date.
The Daytime Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in television programming honoring work in a variety of categories, including daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting, culinary, and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy jointly announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime.
The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be produced once again by NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI). Adam Sharp and Lisa Armstrong are executive producers from NATAS, while David McKenzie executive produces from ATI.

51st Daytime Emmys: Outstanding Daytime Drama Series Nominations
On Thursday, the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards revealed nominations in several key categories via four entertainment news programs: Access Hollywood, E! News, Extra and Access Hollywood.
Three of the four announcements were major categories in the field of Daytime Dramas.
The nominees in the Outstanding Daytime Drama Series category are: The Bay, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, General Hospital, Neighbours and The Young and the Restless.

General Hospital won this category last year, and has the most all-time wins for a series in this category. For the first time, the beloved Australian-based soap opera, Neighbours is now eligible for competition due to its reboot which streams on Amazon Freevee.

The 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be handed out in ceremonies in Los Angeles and broadcast live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ on Friday night, June 7th.
Previous categories announced tonight via the entertainment news outlet included: Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

The nominations were revealed for the 51st annual Daytime Emmys. in the prestigious Lead Actress in a Drama Series category by Entertainment Tonight.
This comes ahead of tomorrow’s full list that is set to be unveiled at 12noon/9am PST on Friday.
In the running for this year’s Outstanding Lead Actress are Tamara Braun (Ava, Days of our Lives), Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke, The Bold and the Beautiful), Annika Noelle (Hope, The Bold and the Beautiful), Finola Hughes (Anna, General Hospital), Cynthia Watros (Nina, General Hospital) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, The Young and the Restless).

Previous winners in this category include GH’s Finola Hughes, Cynthia Watros and Y&R’s Michelle Stafford. Days of our Lives nominee had won in the Supporting Actress category twice in her career.
