Good Afternoon America Continues To Bring In Abysmal Ratings! Losing One-Half of OLTL's Former Audience in Key Demo!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

When the last regime tinkered with the ABC Daytime line-up by wiping Llanview and One Life to Live off the television map, they tried first to bring viewers the ill-fated, The Revolution.  When that did not fly and to get out of that flop, the network put on in its place the nine-week summer replacement series, Good Afternoon America, the spin off of the highly successful and now top rated morning program, Good Morning America (first time in 17 years)!

However, GAA is also performing extremely bad.  Take a look at the numbers courtesy of TV Media Insight, which indicates that week three of the series, ” dipped to 1.70 million viewers and continues to lose about one-half of the year-ago One Life to Live audience, according to the Live Plus Same Day data from Nielsen.”

Here are some key numbers in key demos with comparison between GAA and OLTL with change versus the comparable year-ago period in parentheses, so you can  follow the big picture!  Total Viewers:  Good Afternoon America (ABC): 1.70 (-39 from One Life to Live) Women 25-54: Good Afternoon America (ABC): 404,000 (-50 from One Life to Live)  Women 18-49:  Good Afternoon America (ABC): 293,000 (-57 from One Life to Live)  Women 18-34:   Good Afternoon America (ABC): 106,000 (-50 One Life to Live)

How do you feel after looking at these numbers?  Clearly, GAA looks to not have a chance to continue in any form, which is good news for General Hospital.  And from all reports, GH has been given the nod to continue on with the network firmly behind it through its 50th Anniversary.

With that said, this is no consolation for One Life to Live fans, who suffered the fate of watching their favorite characters and stories being taken off the air only to be  replaced with a lifestyle/makeover series and a afternoon news entertainment program that did not capture America’s hearts.   Weigh-in!

LOL!!

I knew they would fail…Our soaps and that’s it..

music to my ears. They deserve to fail with every show they launch in the afternoon that’s not a soap!!

I AGREE TOTALLY WITH YOU (Nancy)………………………..

ABC made a huge mistake cancelling OLTL. I will never watch anything in the OLTL TIMESLOT. In fact, my tv is not tuned to ABC daytime or primetime. My cable company could take ABC off their lineup and I wouldn’t care. Same goes for Disney channels.

@Jane, we’ve all learned that lesson already. Don’t you miss T.V in the late 90’s and early 2000’s?

ABC is dead to me except for General Hospital !!

Bring back OLTL and all will be well with the world….

Diito!!!

AMC and OLTL!
That is daytime TV at it’s BEST

ABCD’s replacement shows offer no interest for me. ABC should have stuck with soaps.

To one Susan to another I agree with you …

I do like Josh and Lara very much, but I love my ONE LIFE TO LIVE… all my daytime dramas. My prayer is for GENERAL HOSPITAL to own the 2 PM hour over THE TALK and syndicated fare (the NBC station here airs THE DOCTORS in the time period). ABC took a gamble and it failed. no show of that ilk will succeed, at least in the sort term. ABC’s offerings are too generic, too tame, too lowest common denominator. I’d accept a revival of PYRAMID or CARD SHARKS over CHEW, REVOL-eeeew-TION, or GAA. Maybe a 30-minute serial will come to roost on the Alphabet again one day. We can hope.

No revivals, please!!! I also think they’d like to see GH take audience away from ‘The Talk” since it competes with “The View” which is also losing ratings.

I hope that The Talk falls flat on its nose when GH moves at 2pm this September and that we never hear from it again. It was a huge mistake from CBS to bring it in the first place.

I didn’t watched ATWT. But I support the genre and The Talk deserve to die like ABC’s idiotic replacement shows.

I just do not understand what kind of idiots ABC thinks we are!

I mean the promos for GAA were horrible not to mention the “talent” they had in them. It is funny because what they thought would be selling points for this show were actually what made me not want to tune in even more (and believe me I already had enough reasons).

And you know another thing, if according to ABC and the Nielsens, they say that we, the soap fans, do not matter, then obviously NO ONE else cares for their lousy programming either! Just look at your numbers, ABC. It isn’t just us soap fans that hate your new shows – everyone else does too. 🙂

Exactly! I remember them saying how soap fans weren’t home during the day to keep up with their shows, so the numbers have dropped….well, it looks like no one is home to watch these horrible replacement shows. And after reading that article where one of the Execs said that there are no plans to revive AMC or OLTL, that only fuels the fire for soap fans to turn against anything that ABC chooses to air in those time slots. I can’t wait to see how big of a failure Katie Couric’s new show will be….LOL

Soap fans are a good chunk of the nielsens ratings ….Abc wants to admitt to it o9r not….

Anything they put on Daytime Network television except for soaps will fail!!!!

CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree with you 100%

This makes me so happy.

I laughed when I read this too!

yes, it’s the little things that make us soap fans happy… like little ratings for replacement shows!

you know if they want a cheap show that we would like, replay old AMC, OLTL, Edge of Night, even Dark Shadows, shows from the past – heck they’ve got over 40 years of shows to use. I’d love seeing shows from way back when – even the old commercials too! Back to the times when Mrs Olson invited you in for some good ole Folgers coffee, or when Marge stuck your finger nails in Palmolive, or when a little dab of Dippity would do ya! 🙂

YAY!!!!!!!! ABC allowed Brian Frons the hack to destroy their daytime line-up. That they will pay for for a long time to come. LMAO

Revolution and GAA (Plus Katie) will fail quicker then the forgotten game show that replaced SFT in 1987.

Too bad ABCD doesn’t have the cajones to admit they made a huge mistake cancelling AMC and OLTL. If the were smart they would reinstate AMC and OLTL, keep GH @ 3pm and air the Oprah Wannabe @ 4p. ABCD created this mess so either fix it or live with it!

I miss OLTL, but I am happy for GH. Still boycotting all ABC/D programming except GH and PLL on ABC Family.

I am so happy these replacement shows are failing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wake-up ABC & smell the roses !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They don’t know what they are doing at all………. They won’e admitt to their mistakes to do with OLTL & AMC ……OLTL’s ratings are still better than GAA will ever be……What does this tell you??????? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm ……………………………………. And better than the cancelled Revolution & The Chew which is onn the chopping block… ABC is CLUELESS IN SEATTLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Such idiots……………..I hope all these repacement shows continue to flop ..It will be one flop after another…What they are doing isn’t working they are on the wrong tack as usual… ABC WE WANT OUR SOAPS… Do they understand english..WANT OUR STORIES ABC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Give us what we want or you will continue to fail misreably…

It’s Our SOAPS Or NOTHING abc…………..

Bring on Katie. I don’t intend to be looking at those pearly whites.

She is going to be canceled in no time….It’s happen before , why not again……..She will NEVER LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It sadly shows what should still be on our beloved OLTL. People will always want fantasy and heartwarming drama OLTL you are sorely missed.

I totally agree with you. I love the OLTL characters and especially Todd being on GH, but I still miss OLTL terribly.

I agree with EVERYTHING you said about OLTL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still miss it TOO!!! It was ONE OF A KIND (OLTL)……………………I like a heart-warming drama like OLTL was…

Just wait for the rights to AMC and OLTL revert back to ABC, they will have no other choice to combine the two shows or pick on and put back on the air because nothing they try will work. Period!!!

Katie’s show will flop, sorry Katie you are no Oprah!

I agree with you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i agree with you too, Katie rating at the beginning may be high enough, just for people to see what her show is about, but just like gman and anyother other crappy talk show they try to put on, we abc fans will not support them, imo hands down only the soaps, it had to be a reason why soaps lasted sooo long, hate abc sometimes, keep loosing all the money on puttinf subpar reallity crap on grrr do they not get it, unbelievable!

One word……HA!!!!!!

Bring back OLTL, don’t you see the mistake you all made.

With all of the bad press, angry fans and the drop in ratings for both ABC, because they cancelled AMC and OLTL, and NBC/Today Show for the firing of Ann Curry, ABC could make a big PR coup by bringing back at least one, if not both soaps to the afternoon. They are not getting the demos and audience numbers they wanted anyway. And since Americans and soap lovers love a great redemption, forgiveness story, this could be a perfect , save-face one. I’m not saying there can’t be some tweaks for our shows, just definitely not writers and good story lines.

from your lips to GOD’s ears

If I had to choose in bringing back at least one soap, for me I would choose hands down for ONE LIFE TO LIVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ret of the rating’s story…”The news remained grim for week three of last-place ABC daytime entry Good Afternoon America, which dipped to 1.70 million viewers and continues to lose about one-half of the year-ago One Life to Live audience, according to the Live Plus Same Day data from Nielsen. It will be interesting to see what happens when veteran General Hospital steps into the 2 p.m. ET hour this fall. Elsewhere, The View on ABC is down but still tops; second-place The Talk on CBS was close to year-ago levels; and third-place The Chew on ABC is no All My Children.”

Barely doing better than The Revolution. If I was Lara Spence or Josh Elliot, I’d hide away in shame. These numbers are very embarrassing and there’s nothing to be proud of.

ABC may be getting away with The Chew. But the 2pm timeslot is now a complete laughable joke. First The Revolution and now Good Afternoon America. OLTL didn’t deserve to die for all of this masquerade.

I have mixed feelings when I read about news like this. I’m thrilled that any replacement show ABC/D tries in their daytime schedule is failing miserably, but still so sad because I miss AMC and OLTL so much! What a waste of time and effort. They should have just left our shows alone!

i totally agree, abc is soooo bad now, i am so glad that everything is failing on abc , they are loosing a ton of money, what a shame lol. I miss amc with Tad,jake, david and etc, it is extremely sad what abc did!

We the fans are caught in a catch 22, we want all but #OLTL to fail in the time slot but we also want #GH to suceed and stick around. Boy does ABC suck!!!

Love Lara and Josh they are so great and fun! BUT daytime belongs to soaps. I want AMC and OLTL back but how do you bring them back in tacked. AMC without Susan Lucci I don’t think will succeed. If by a long shot it did, it would take a lot of time. Will audience hang in? I may but others? Will ABC hang in with it? How many of the cast would be willing and available to come back? Probably enough. Guess I want it to be like it was. Susan Lucci to be a loss. They need to fire EP, what a MAJOR mstake. He should have been gone already. OLTL- for decades they have had so many recasts, short term characters in and out, fans accept this and show survived. They have done a pretty good job with casting and so they stand a better chance of succeeding right away if brought back. If Erika Slezak did not come back it would not have the impact that Susan Lucci not returning would. OLTL has a strong cast on its own. I miss my soaps!

Good news, but let this be the year The Chew crashes and is canceled. Soaps or nothing in the afternoon.

I agree about this is the year The Chew crashes & is canceled once and for all !!!!! Yes, SOAPS OR NOTHING IN THE AFTERNOON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope someday someone SMART will figure out that OLTL was one of the best shows on daytime..cancelling that was a BIG BIG mistake.. GH..yeah I watch it all the time..it’s no OLTL but it is DAYTIME Soap and that’s what we watch.

Cancel GAA asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And any other show abc replaces our beloved soaps with……………………..

Soaps? Really? What intelligent human being would admit to that. The filming sucks, the writing sucks, the lighting sucks, the sound quality sucks. Good resume for the crew, but other than that????

R u kidding me??!! I watched Today with Hoda and KL at same time slot (mtn time) and I haven’t watched that since – couldn’t stand Revolution – please don’t cancel GAA !! It’s fun & refreshing !! Love it.

I am a long time OLTL fan, but I LIKE GAA.

Keep GAA on the air and CANCEL Katie ASAP!

Now criticize me.

I wish ABC/D would just admit they made a mistake and bring OLTL back. OLTL out performs the “Spew” also so that one should go away too! leaving room for both OLTL/GH then when “Katie” does not perform the way it should could slide AMC back in! Wake up PTB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Night time soaps are coming back such as Dallas….bring back at least one daytime soap!

I say take all the soaps off. None of them have anything to do with real life. Tired of all the same old story lines. I think the soap watchers need to get a real life…I was once a soaper myself, but you do get tired of who is sleeping with who, who killed who , who has forgotten who they are, who is having who s baby , over and over and over again.. Time to move on people…..

Besides oltl….what is going on with the news….what they are doing is more like reading a tabloid at the grocery store line. They brought George on and ruined his reputation for telling the news….no wonder they lost Sam Champion… And replaced him with a mouse dressed like she’s going on a hot date everyday. They might be able to save Josh if they get rid of ( always joking) Laura….thank goodness Robin is there or we would be watching entertainment tonight. Shame on you Sinclair broadcasting… Its supposed to be the news after all. P.S. never watching again.

Nancy Lee Grahn’s Star-Studded ALS Fundraiser Reveals “I’ll Be There” Video Featuring Soap Opera Notables

Talk about your impressive line-up! It’s a soap fans dream and for a great cause. General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) is prepping her one-night only ALS fundraiser which will feature many of her friends and co-stars.

The benefit is set for May 4th in Glendale, California. Slated to participate are Genie Francis, Jane Elliot, Peter Bergman, Maurice Benard, Eileen Davidson, Thorsten Kaye, Michelle Stafford, Stephen Nichols, Rena Sofer, Jason Thompson, Kelly Monaco, Melissa Claire Egan, Maura West, Kristina Wagner, Gregory Harrison, Trevor St. John, Kate Mansi, Kirsten Storms, Cynthia Watros, and many others.

On Wednesday, Grahn took to her social media and released an “I’ll be there” video shout-out featuring, Monaco, Elliot, Bergman, Bernard, West, Harrison, St. John and more. In a touching and important moment in the new video, Michelle Strogny, who is battling ALS, is featured.

Photo: ABC

Previously, in speaking with Soap Opera Digest on the impetus of the event, Grahn recalled, “I was actually doing Zoom events during Covid and I met this woman that I just fell in love with, Michelle Strojny. At the time, Michelle had been living with ALS for four years. Now, it’s five years. She is a mom of a teenage son, she has the most wonderful husband, and she has been dealing with this [disease] for quite a while. And obviously, there isn’t a cure yet. It’s not survivable yet. But as she says, it’s not incurable. Nothing is; it’s underfunded. But anyway, I just really dug this woman. She is so grounded and filled with grace, and she spends all of her time working to raise money for the cause. We did a fundraiser for her last year and then I thought, ‘You know what? The soaps don’t ever get together to do something for charity.’ Collectively, we have this amazing community and we don’t collectively use it for a good cause, and I think it’s such an easy thing for us to do and we could potentially really make a difference.”

As GH viewers know, Gregory Harrison is playing the character of Gregory Chase, who is also battling ALS in a touching storyline that is currently playing out shedding a light on this disease.

For information on Nancy’s event, including the stars who are s scheduled to participate click here. To purchase tickets to the event click here.

Check out the video featuring Nancy’s friends and co-stars below.  Now let us know, your thought son the line-up for the benefit and helping raise awareness and funds for ALS research via the comment section.

‘General Hospital’ Writer Shannon Peace Let Go, and Shares on Sprina: “One of My Only Regrets is to Not Have the Opportunity to Develop That ‘Ship’ Further”

As General Hospital’s new head writing team of Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahy gets off the ground and running, there are still changes a foot on the writing team.

Now comes word via breakdown writer Shannon Peace that she is no longer on contract with the long-running ABC soap heading into its 61st season. Peace shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram, thanking the fans, and the show for the opportunity and the importance of diversity in the writers room.

Peace began, “After almost 3 years on staff and 106 episodes penned, I am no longer on contract with General Hospital. Writing for this country’s longest running television serial drama has been an education of epic proportions; I will forever be grateful that I earned my WGA card on a daytime fixture that holds memories for so many.” (Peace pictured below with GH EP Frank Valentini and script writer, Charlotte Gibson from about ten months ago).

Photo: SPeaceIG

Shannon added “Even more importantly, as the sole Black breakdown writer (and only POC in the writers room) during my tenure, I pushed for vital interactions and discussions that prioritized inclusion, visibility, and representation”

The writer pointed to the example of vital interaction when in story, “Stella and Portia’s frank July 2022 conversation about the role race played in Esme’s framing of Trina is just one example of the impact I’m gratified to have had.”

Acknowledging former GH co-head writers was also part of Peace’s farewell expressing, “Appreciation to my former bosses, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor – not only taking a chance on me, but for valuing my opinion and championing my voice.”

Courtesy/ABC

Many GH fans know that Peace was key to the development of the love story between Trina Robinson and Spencer Cassadine as played by Tabyana Ali and Nicholas Chavez. Shannon gave a special shout-out to ‘Sprina’ fans, “I also want to thank fans who were supportive of my work, especially the recognition of my love for ‘Sprina’. One of my only regrets is not having to develop that ‘ship’ further.”

She concludes her statement with,”In the aftermath of a historic writer’s strike that shed new light on the troubling ways writers are regarded in daytime, my sincere hope is that General Hospital recommits to valuing staff writer efforts and input, with a more intentional focus on diverse viewpoints — and thrives for another 60 years.”

Accompanying her post, Shannon added, “Thank you all for the love and support these last few years. I hope GH fans get all they hope for and more!”

So, what do you think about GH not renewing Shannon’s contract? Will there be more continued changes afoot? What do you think is the future of ‘Sprina’ anyway at this point as viewers wait to see if Nicholas Chavez officially returns to the show?  Comment below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Learns Britt Died and Tells Anna He Has Been Working For Cates Since November 2021

On the Tuesday, March 26th of General Hospital, Anna (Finola Hughes) and the viewers learn about where Jason (Steve Burton) has been for over two and half years. However, Jason gets some news of his own.

Anna is visiting Jason at the PCPD interrogation room. She asks him if he shot Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), which he flatly denies. Anna believes him, but she tells Jason it doesn’t matter, because video footage shows him on the roof at the time of the shooting

When talk turns to Jason not willing to speak without his lawyer present, Anna can’t grasp why Jason would instead spend an hour alone talking with John Cates (Adam J. Harrington).

Photo: ABC

It is then that Anna brings up that John went by “Jagger” and that the two of them knew each other in high school. Jason doesn’t recall much of his time in high school following his brain injury, but then he gets furious realizing John knew about “Jason’s” past. That is when Jason slams the table and tells Anna, “I’ve been working for John Cates since November 2021.”

Next, Jason explains further that he has been working as an informant for the FBI. Anna wants to know how this came about and he tells her that after the tunnel collapsed, and he couldn’t make it to Britt (Kelly Thiebaud)… all of a sudden he sees Anna’s face drop.  Anna is the first person to tell him that Britt died and was murdered. She tells Jason the killer is in custody, but he continues to be shocked, overwhelmed with tears welling up in his eyes. Realizing he has to pivot to save his life, Jason continues telling Anna how he wound up working with John.

Jason explains that after the tunnel collapse in Greece, FBI agents grabbed him and placed him under arrest and took him to Quantico where he met John. At Quantico, John played a recording of RICO violations and offered Jason a deal if he agreed to be an informant against Pikeman, the illegal arms dealer.

Anna hears from Jason that he thinks Pikeman is selling illegal arms to anyone flagged by the NSA but has ties to the WSB which they needed a civilian to infiltrate their organization as a military soldier, a mercenary.

Jason tells Anna he was a part of the team brought into eliminate Sonny (Maurice Benard). Every time an attempt was made on Sonny’s life over the last two years, a different team was sent to do the job. Anna gets furious when she learns that John told Jason his job was to kill Sonny and she was with John at the warehouse that night. Jason ensured the sniper missed Sonny and left the rifle behind. However, they were supposed to meet an extraction team. Before he was shot, Dante saw it was Jason on the roof and when he turned around with his hands over his head, Dante was shot by the other guy. Jason says if Dante dies, he’ll be charged with capital murder and then will be useless to the FBI.

Photo: ABC

Meanwhile, John visits Bobbie’s and runs into Carly (Laura Wright). She learns Jason is in custody and is going to head to the PCPD. Before she does, Carly has some words with Cates when she learns not only does John have a vendetta against Sonny, but Jason too.  Carly tells John he should recuse himself from the case.

So, what did you think about the moment when Jason learned Britt died? What do you think of Jason’s return storyline thus far and what we learned about Jagger/Jason and more? Comment below. But first, check out a moment from today’s GH with Jason and Anna.
