Good Afternoon America Off To A Sluggish Start!

Yesterday, was the debut episode of ABC’s daytime summer replacement series, Good Afternoon America, which took the place of The Revolution which took the place of One Life to Live The news magazine/entertainment show is slated for nine weeks in the 2PM EST/1PMPST  time slot.

GAA is co-anchored by GMA’s Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott, and the network is looking to see what initial interest comes from the audience, and that could well  determine if the show could have a  lifespan past the summer.   As it stands, ABC plans to move Daytime Emmy winning drama series General Hospital into the 2 p.m. hour in the fall, leading into Katie Couric’s new talk show, Katie.

Now according to the overnight ratings from TV Media Insights, things did not start off with a bang for GAA reporting, “One day of metered market data does not a hit or miss make, of course. But based on the weighted Nielsen averages in the 56-metered markets for Monday, July 9, Good Afternoon America disappointed with a 1.7 rating/5 share in households. Comparably, the lead-in average was a 1.8/ 5 and the July 2011 time period was a 2.0/ 6. Good Afternoon America also lost steam from both benchmarks in two of the three key demos…women 25-54 and women 18-34.”

So soapers, weigh-in! But before you do that, check out the promo for Good Afternoon America after the jump!  So if The Revolution failed,  and if Good Afternoon America fails, what does that signal to the network?  Perhaps they might realize,  a huge mistake was made by cancelling the beloved One Life to Live?

Even if this show fails, TPTB at ABC will never admit that cancelling OLTL was a mistake. It’s quite obvious they no longer have any desire to please the audience. Like soap writers nowadays, they only dish out what they like.

Completely agree with you. It’s not news anymore that canceling OLTL was the biggest mistake that ABC could have made….but rather than admit their mistakes and fix the problem, they will continue to put a band-aid on the gushing wound that has now become the 2pm est time slot. It has been six months since the cancellation of OLTL, and the fans have not let up. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to realize what should be done to fix the 2pm time slot. ABC is dead-set on pushing these damn talk shows that no one is interested in. No one is going to watch GAA….and I sure as hell won’t be watching Katie in the fall. There has been an all out ban of ABC daytime in my house. I don’t watch The View, The Chew or anything else on the network. Watching ABC daytime has been a staple in my house for years and years. Since the cancellation of my beloved OLTL, I have decided to turn the channel. If the network wants to turn a blind eye to what I want to watch….then I will turn a blind eye to their network all together. Get it together ABC, and fix the freaking problem!!! And here’s a clue, putting on GAA is not a fix.

Totally agree.

Your right Torrey, Can’t believe abc just replaced crap with more crap, Who watches this garbage? There’s no way in my life I will ever watch the shows that they have on daytime now. I watch the soaps and that’s it, I miss One life to live so much that it hurts, I want it back so badly, I don’t think that abc will ever admit that they are wrong and bring their best soap back. abc will never be #1 in daytime ever again with the trash their showing now, Only idiots watch that stuff, there is such a thing as to much information, I want entertainment that the soaps gave to me every day, I don’t care about Tom cruises divorce or how to make a meal, or how to dress. The soaps were unique, the programming they have on now is all over cable you can find it anywhere. And your right it has been 6 months since they took my beloved One life to live away from us and the fans are still complaining and that isn’t going to stop any time soon, not by me anyway.

I to miss my soap oltl…but after 20 years started watching GH again. Only because of the oltl stars going over . I will never watch the daytime line-up of the View, the Chew, now the GAA show. and when Katie arrives I will not be watching that show either…..When all else fails it seems some wizard pulls her out ot his hat and says….Katie C. can save us….so go ahead pay her the big bucks….that could have been used to save our soaps and she can laugh all the way to the bank…..apparently the people that decide what people need to watch on daytime t.v. don’t watch daytime t.v. and if things don’t change neither will the people be watching…..AS much as I wish that the soaps would return, I am sure they won’t. I just wish this cycle of news shows, and shows about how to do everything from a to z would end.
Where are the good writers, the good story lines, the great actors??? the funny comdey show, a good variety show would beat the crap on t.v. today.

Not a surprise when no one will watch anything except OLTL in the hour they put more crap on the air. All ABC has are copy shows of other cable networks, trash, talk, news, reality. Who want more of the same old junk? Yesterday was the first GAA. Can’t wait to watch all of ABC shows except GH to go down the tubes.

I watched GAA and will continue to do so. I liked the show. ABC will not bring back the soaps. They still have GH, but who knows for how long. i am not in the business of wanting any show to fail. But ABC will just keep putting on alternate programming. Everything related to the soaps is either destroyed or auctioned off, actors have moved and would not be available to come back. They are contracted elsewhere.

Ann I agree they will not bring OLTL back or add anymore soaps because of the reasons you gave and frankly the shape the economy is in. I DVR GH and watch it but how long it will stay remains to be seen.

Sweeney, the rest of us aren’t paid million of dollars to watch and pretend it’s likeable.

LOL. Ms. Sweeney is so transparant. But, seriously, just because they aren’t bringing back the soaps doesn’t mean I will watch any dreck they choose to air. Too many better things to do with my time than watch this crap. GH is the only ABC show I watch and it will stay that way until GH goes dark and then it’s goodbye ABC forever.

I was not going to come back on here. But I hate how people assume who a poster is, when that person, me, is just an ordinary person with feelings, too. Look, I get you anger at soaps being cancelled. But maybe think just once about blasting a person, me, who happens to exercise her right to watch whatever she wants to. I have watched soaps since a teenager, so I am loyal to soaps. My very favorite of all time was cancelled, PORT CHARLES. I tried everything I could to save it. I could have boycotted ABC then, but I didn’t. I have too many other things going on, some health issues, to worry about something I cannot fix anyway.

I think most people realize by now that OLTL is gone for good.

But GH is still on the air and its survival largely depends on the failure of GAA. That was the main reason why we boycotted The Revolution and that is the main reason why we are now boycotting GAA. At this point, our battle is really more for GH than for OLTL.

ABC is such a slow learner, it could take awhile for them to get the message, its SOAPS or no new programming will EVER succeed in the afternoon!!!!!!!!____

I’m STILL not watching anything on ABC except GH!!!! They can seriously SUCK IT!!!! They will never have me back EVER! They already lost me and other for life! Guess they are just trying to figure out what to do now that everybody LOATHES ABC!

“Perhaps they might realize, a huge mistake was made by cancelling the beloved One Life to Live?”

Think they probably have already….but will NEVER admit it and will continue to push their “vision” of what the audience wants on the screen no matter how many shows fail.

I think the other thing they never take into consideration are people who watched OLTL (or any other soap) in a manner other than live viewing.
I mean, seriously, who would tape/ DVR a show like GAA versus the number of people who WOULD their soap? I never watch daytime shows live….just doesn’t match my schedule. And, yes, there are plenty of times I do watch (or at least not FF through) the commercials. Usually because I am always doing 2 things at once…watching my show(s), reading, looking through mail, etc.

How pathetic is this, does abc really believe we are going to watch this crap? There’s no way I would watch this no talent garbage or any of the other shows that were welcoming the no talent garbage to the 2 o’clock spot that belongs to One life to live. Continue the boycott, I hope this trash tv sinks in the ratings like the revolution did, Hopefully it sinks even more. Abc/Disney you sure have destroyed your afternoon programs, what a waste.

ABC should expand GH to two hours for the summer months then seperate the show back into ONE LIFE TO LIVE and GENERAL HOSPITAL

Does anyone else agree???

Yes, that would be fine. When Katie starts in September, OLTL should replace The Chew. Two hours of soaps in a row and then people could tolerate one hour of talk.

I’m on board and would commit to watching daily. One can dream.

I Always agree with you Brian.

Thank you Barbara. We do seem to see things the same way… perhaps we could get jobs at ABC and fix their daytime programming ! LOL… we can dream.

And thank you Brian, we would probably do a better job at running the place then they are. I know one thing for sure the soaps would be back.

always an OLTL fan, but let’s not forget the AMC crowd. 2 hours, combine the 3 soaps. And for sure, lots and lots of cross overs so everyone is watching both hours and not compliaining about what characters are where.

abc messed up bigtime ,with the oltl cancellation ,I will not watch gaa, I only watch gh,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,soaps worked for years in the afternoon why mess with a good thing, stupid abc.

I am and always will be a One Life to Live fan. I will never watch ANYTHING that ABC puts in the 1:00 central time slot. ABC seriously underestimated the loyalty of the soap fans. This will go down in television history as one of the stupidest decisions a broadcast network ever did.

LONG LIVE SOAP OPERA!!!!!! GENERAL HOSPITAL all the way!! I will never any other daytime programming other then soap operas! Good Bye GAA!! Hello GH!

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 2:00 time slot is totally dead to me right now. If I’m off and not cleaning or doing yard work I’m watching Dalllas DVDs.

I just put it on. While I am glued to CNN most days and DVR soaps, and I happen to like Josh Elliot, I turned it off already.

Not a good time slot.

Hopefully it sinks in the ratings like the revolution did, I can’t find your blog.

Well, I am not surprised, nor do I feel sorry for them. There are plenty of soap fans that never wanted OLTL to be cancelled. We will not watch anything they put in that time slot to try to “replace” it, as it cannot be replaced. Ratings were fine and there was plently of support for the show. IF they were SMART, they would return OLTL to it’s rightful place – even if some of the actors have moved on there are plenty of the core actors we all LOVE that would return – namely, Erika Slezak, Jerry VerDorn, maybe even Robin Strasser . . . .

I Agree with you Brandi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree!

Again that would be AWESOME…………

I didn’t watch or will I. My beloved OLTL was cancelled and GH is destroying the good memories of the endings and changing the characters of OLTL, so if it all keeps up will completely stop watching ABC. If it fails ABC needs to finish incorporating OLTL into GH and have a revamped/fresh GH on for 2 hours. And stop killing off and drastically changing our OLTL characters! I hope the soap fans can banned together by boycotting GAA and have a voice – it worked on the Revaultion.

Agree with you….don’t like how the integration is changing the characters of OLTL. The 2pm time slot has been dead to me since January 13, 2012….I will not watch any programming in that slot, unless it involves LLanview, PA…LOL And being that I have grown tired of the portrayal of the OLTL characters on GH, I have just reverted to channel surfing, or watching old DVD’s for hours, during the day.

I channel surf as well and seem to always revert back to you tube and OLTL and JOLIE clips. It makes the afternoon go by pretty quick and I get my OLTL fix. Good to know others feel the same as I do.

I get my fix of OLTL on the soap Channel on the T.V. My cable co. puts it on Mon.-Fri. 6:00am too 9:00am..Three episodes of OLTL…..I watch the 8:00am one…Not up at that time……………………

Not up at 6:00am ..Maybe I catch the last half hour of the 7:00am episode..

I do not see that GH is destroying the OLTL characters. Execs did that when they fired everybody. The OLTL writing team is trying to make their beloved fans happy by throwing us the meager bones they can, and I am grateful. The alternative is to not see McBain or Starr at all. Do I want OLTL back? Sure. Never going to happen, though, so I take what’s here and enjoy it.

I agree with you….We need Viki……………..

I understand that it’s nice to see John McBain, Starr, Tea, Blair and Todd…..but at what expense? I love the characters and was happy, at first, to see them appear on the GH canvas…but when they brought Starr, Cole & Hope on, just to kill Cole and Hope off so they can clear the path for a Starr/Michael pairing….then bring Tea on, only to kill off the child she had with Victor….and of course the final straw for me was pairing John with Sam…I could see the writing on the wall, as soon as he came into town, and was not happy from the beginning….for a man that spent months, if not years fighting or holding back his true feelings for the woman he loves, aka Natalie, he shows up in Port Charles and within no time at all he’s locking lips with Sam. I don’t buy it and I don’t like it.

I HOPE IT DOES NOT WORK AT ALL FROM CANADA

Didn’t watch it, don’t plan on ever watching it!!! If it gets good ratings, it will spell the end of GH!
All soap fans should boycott any afternoon shows on ABC, except GH!!!

CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed!

Trying to do that but GH is making it hard by destroying the characters that were from OLTL that have come to GH. They are just enough different, they don’t hold my attention.

John McBain holds my attention………………It would be even better if Natalie & liam were there…That would make it complete…..I don’t they are that much different to me…Again they hold my attention because I still miss OLTL a lot..

Granted this debut was not eye-popping, but the quality and the concept is much better than the Revolution or the Chew. However, GH will not survive past next April unless the new regime wakes up and realizes that what they are broadcasting to viewers is not working. They have been in charge for over 6 months and have not moved the ratings needle one bit. In fact, they have lost viewers. The quality and pace has improved somewhat but overall not much improvement to garnish the overwhelming praise they have received. Remember the Emmy awards just given were for Guza/Phelps GH and OLTL was not even nominated for show or writing. I want GH to succeed, but not because another show failed again as is what happened with the Revolution. Soap critics, bloggers and press need to be honest in their publications and stop kissing Cartini’s butts. The stories on this show right now are not engaging, they are very dark, campy and are basically reruns of old OLTL stories.

Agree with you Carlee, have said many times that the writers need to come up with new & better s/l. Seen these before on OLTL and loved them, but not again with GH’s version.

They need to come with new & fresh material… Don’t the writers realize that…Don’t repeat those kind of stories again…It was successful before doesn’t mean it will work again………..More love stories & suspence…..

Tali, its the same exact s/ls, seems like there is no modification to the original s/l at all. Like the old scripts were just dusted off & inserted into GH & new characters slotted in.

agreed just too much recycling … GH does not hold my interest at all & i love GH its too dark & gloomy this is not this GH i am accustomed to. Don’t get me wrong change is inevitable but the cartini change it shows in the ratings…

ABC will never admit their mistake.I am not
sure what will ever have succses in that
timeslot. Not really sure if they know how
many bridges they burnt taking away soaps
Long live GH!!

DITTO!!!!!!!!!

I honestly have to say I still am not over ABC cancelling AMC and OLTL as far as I am concerned they can’t replace those shows with anything that I would watch. For this show in particular it amounts to basically the same thing they tried to replace the SOAPS with – nothing!
I am still boycotting ABC and all things ABC (including Disney) with the exception of GH. That is the only show I will tune into ABC for and I will not watch anything else ABC has to offer.

Me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn’t even put it past ABC to pull GH without a proper ending if GAA succeeds. I think the revolution started with the same type numbers and just went down the tubes quick. Time will tell. If you want GH to stay, stay away from GAA.

I will..I will never watch that boloney…………..Never watched The revolution or smelly cooking show The Chew………………These kind of shows I have no interest in watching what so ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I only have interest for the soaps !!!!!!! Keep botcotting GAA…………………We beat them once with The Revolution we soap fans can do it again with GAA….Another abc show to beat the dust(GAA) real soon..

Won’t watch, have never watched and it doesn’t matter what they put on.

It’s obvious that ABC/D would like to cancel GH and get out of the soap business entirely. They keep looking for replacement programming that will bring back their lost audience. Well, guess what? Shows like The Spew, Revulsion, and GAA aren’t going to solve their problem! Only by bringing back AMC and OLTL, and keeping GH, will they regain the loyal fans who kept their network afloat for decades. Can’t those pea-brains see that?

I agree with you Mary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We want OLTL back! We will do our best to make sure everything else fails, GH is the only daytime show I will watch on ABCD.

Me TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Folks, seriously-quit acting like ABC is the only network ever to cancel daytime soaps. Remember- CBS recently cancelled the two longest running daytime soaps in TV/broadcasting history, and NBC cancelled numerous soaps in the ’80s and ’90s. If a program is underperforming in the ratings and not earning enough ad revenue to offset the production costs (very high in the case of daytime dramas), the show will be axed, regardless of how long it’s been on the air or what network it’s on. Enough with the ABC-bashing already. It’s beyond old and tired. And no- I’m not an ABC/Disney employee.

Chris you are right I was afraid that everybody had forgotten people at ATWT & Guiding Light lost their jobs also.

I am going to also add if you want to stay on are you listening other 4 soaps get a base of oldies that people know and can feel good about kinda like an old blanket you can cuddle up to. One of the reasons I started watching GH is you brought Heather back and Anna now get Edward & Monica back every once in a while and you will make me and a lot of other people happy. How about bringing Jeff Webber back they never should have killed off Alan Q. you know you don’t put people out to pasture after they turn 40. lol

OLTL was popular and came in under budget. Disney/ABC gambled on changing programming to lower production costs to increase the profit margin, but the daytime audience is limited, and many won’t watch just any garbage to support D/ABC. Maybe you are a shareholder and you will.

A free market means consumers get to choose. If D/ABC insists on ignoring consumer preference, then consumers will make another choice. If D/ABC executives are stupid enough to supply programming for which there is no demand, the problem isn’t with consumers. The problem is with corporations whose executives arrogantly think they can manipulate consumers to embrace garbage for the sake of their bonuses and corporate revenue.

Well put. I agree with you 100%. If ABC was doing canceling by sheer numbers, then OLTL should have been the show to stay. It was out-performing AMC & GH in the ratings for quite some time…and while AMC was poor in ratings and always over budget…OLTL was the complete total opposite of that. ABC did a clean sweep, thinking that the fans would go along, and that the viewership would just die down for OLTL, since ABC always treated it like the red-headed step child anyway….what they weren’t expecting is that the fans would revolt so strongly and support OLTL months after it had even gone off the air. We haven’t gone anywhere….we’re just not tuning in to the garbage that they keep rolling out. ABC and the other networks need to pay close attention to what’s happening. Fans are getting tired of garbage….I personally believe that all this reality will soon see its final days….and if not its final days….we will definitely start to see it fade away. People are looking for scripted drama. Why do you think we’re seeing shows like “Revenge” and “Dallas” doing so well in the numbers game? How many hours do they think they can fill with entertainment news? I know in my area, it’s GMA, The View, The Revolution and now this GAA….four hours of talk shows? Really?

I meant to say GMA, The View, The Chew and now GAA……but who cares…The Revolution/ The Chew, it’s all the same thing….crap tv!!

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree with you David.. I couldn’t take four hours straight of talk/reality shows……I like DRAMA, ENTERTAIMENT,like our stories….

I don’t watch the replacement shows on the other networks either if that makes you feel better. But the article was asking for our feedback on GAA and that is what we are doing. If that offends you, maybe you should avoid this subject.

If I understand correclty, ABC owns their soaps. CBS contratced with P&G’s production arm to broadcast GL and ATWT. I am sure the Eye network had influence but I thought P&G wanted out of the productions business.

No matter, it just seems daytime cannot cut a break. I am nearing 50 and it seems so much of what was my world is being ended, changed, or discarded. I miss good stories well told. Daytime drama for so many years was just that.

I agree alot with you Torrey.

Chris, I don’t watch the crappy CBS replacement shows either. And if you look at the dismal ratings of The Talk, you will clearly see that most OLTL fans don’t have an interest for that show .

But as MBmomof3 said, this discussion is about GAA. So I have no idea why you are bringing CBS or NBC on this discussion.

I hope GAA fails miserably–bring back One Life to Live !!I only watch GH on ABC now!

I don’t plan to watch anything on ABC except for GH. If you want GH to stay then you shouldn’t watch GAA. TPTB are watching very closely. They want GAA to succeed so GH can be cancelled.

DON”T WATCH GAA EVER & IT WILL BE CANCELLED!!! Like what happen with the revolution..Same will happen to GAA……………

ABC better buckle up! They better not expect anything new to do well anytime soon if ever! It’s one thing for a corporation to change directions- it is quite another to tell your consumers they don’t matter. Other than GH- ABC is dead to me! Even my children know ABC is a BAD word in our house. 🙂

Good Afternoon America is heading in the same direction as The Revolution did to the chopping block…………..It will be cancelled also……Not interested in watching this at all…..Another news/reality show…Which we don’t want or need on daytime programming..If this show is cancelled of poor ratings maybe abc will realize these shows don’t work with loyal soap fans….They will never admitt it out loud that they made a terrible mistake cancelling OLTL..But one failed show)the revolution) soon to be a second failed show(Good Aternoon America) At OLTL timeslot……..Continue to boycott Good Afternoon America..And this will be the second battle soap fans have WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The afternoons on TV belonged to Soap Operas. They were cherished by so many viewers or else they wouldn’t have lasted so long.Tell me how many shows last for 40 to 50 YEARS. I

None I know of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These crap shows will NEVER last that long……Yes the aternoons do belong to SOAP OPERAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They worked all those years…Why screw up a good thing that soap fans have been watching for years…And started wacthing them with their moms & grew up with the soaps…

No, Sam didn’t get a hold of the dna test, Todd got a hold of it and took it to the prison where heather is to confront her with the truth, he Knows that Jason not that awful Franco is the babies father. And todd is not very happy with Heather, But you know Heather she can talk a snake out of it’s skin, Poor Todd what a mess he is in he want’s to tell Sam the truth, but Heather keeps blackmailing him.

I will not watch any program that has replaced a soap. EVER!!!

What can I say that hasn’t been said by everyone else above me?

The only thing I can comment on is that their so-called promos were really lame. I have two little ones and they do not allow me to watch broadcast TV so I have to watch it on my Tivo after they go to bed. I fast-forward the commercials, but you can still get the gist. I actually WATCHED the above-referenced promo not too long ago because I could not believe that they actually had SNOOKY (I am ashamed I even know who this person is) promoting their show! With the way the majority of us soap fans are boycotting their shows and the very dull promotion of their show, I can see why their ratings are sluggish. Lara on an elephant? Lara and Josh walking and running into each other?! Is this the best they have to offer?

Yes, this is the best they have to offer when reducing their production costs to maximize revenue, executive bonuses, and shareholder gains. They want to make money by offering the cheapest possible product, hoping you are tasteless enough to swallow it.

Never will get me to watch these BORING & distasteful crap!!!!!!!!!!! I won’t settle for watching just about anything..I won’t watch the crumbs they are throwing at us soap fans to watch..No way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Only will watch the soap operas. Their place & home belongs on daytime programming & they always will to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree – The promo was horrible!!!! Haven’t watched the show and I don’t plan to.

With the exception of GH, I hope ABC’s daytime lineup shrivels up and dies. Again with the exception of GH, ABC–daytime, nighttime or anytime–is dead to me and has not been in my home since OLTL went off the air.

If we all stick to the boycott it will work, Abc programming is dead to me to, I watch General hospital, when it ends I change to another channel, fast.

If it ends Gh.. I would be totally lost in what to watch anymore…Soap Fan Forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think JASON is the father of Sam”s baby not Franco..Did you see the DND test paper sticking out of Heather’s purse at Todd’s office today(WED.)…………………

What happen with the dna test that was sticking out of Heather’s purse?? I n todd’s office..Did Sam pull it out & read it!!!!!!!!!!!

Those fools over at The Mouse just don’t get it. They screwed up!!!!!! NOTHING will replace OLTL or even AMC. We didn’t want The Repulsive and we don’t want GAA! Soaps can generate revenue, rhey just need the right people behind them. It still riles me that two great soaps are no longer with us.

I agree.

I think most of us are reading until GH comes on!

Your right about that phil.

I don’t know how many ways ABC viewers can say they want original scripted programming in the afternoon. Are their minds just that slow or can they not admit they made a mistake in cancelling OLTL. Please ABC wake up.

After watching GMA in the morning for 2 hours why does ABC think the viewers would like to watch another hour of GAA in the afternoon. Let’s just save them the trouble and DVR GMA and then ABC can use the money they save to bring back One Life to Live. Now that would be a show worth watching day or night.

Yes JoAnn, day or night. I think OLTL is better than most primetime programming. I’m one of the kucky ones that still have soapnet and can watch OLTL classics!!

Agree joann, One life to live was the best show on Daytime and I would watch it in Prime time to, Would be better then all the garbage they have on now.

I read this on the Associated Press. It would be sad if it were not so funny:

ABC
AP: ‘Good Afternoon America’ Producers ‘Might Want to Hold on to Their Alarm Clocks’
By Merrill Knox on July 10, 2012 1:47 PM

The debut of any show has the potential to be a little rocky, and yesterday’s “Good Afternoon America” was no exception. In his review, the AP’s David Bauder breaks it down segment-by-segment, noting the “GAA” producers “might want to hold on to their alarm clocks”:

The debut edition of “Good Afternoon America” ended abruptly in mid-anecdote from singer Liza Minnelli, who was being interviewed after performing “New York, New York” in the show’s Times Square studio. Host Lara Spencer interrupted her to wave goodbye.

Minnelli, backed by a band and dancers, performed to tout a new live disc of a 1974 recording. In the interview following, [Josh] Elliott asked her, “What was it like watching Liza Minnelli back then?”

A slightly bewildered Minnelli replied: “I don’t know. I’ve never seen her.”

TVNewser will be on hand for tomorrow’s edition of the show, so look for our story on Thursday.

Christine my dvr picked up the last 5 minutes of this show before GH started why I do not know. Liza Minnelli was almost unrecognizeable and Lara Spencer just said we have to go now, it was so off the wall .I tell you it was totally unprofessional on so many levels.

I guess I am lucky in that my DVR did not pick up any of it. Ha! Ha! Thanks for sharing what you saw, kay/kay. It sounds like a train wreck. We can only hope it gets worse from here. 🙂

I hope Everyone continues to Boycott all of Disney EXCEPT for the soaps, and written scripted programs, such as GREY’s Anatomy, Castle , etc.

I will never watch any programs they put In the place of OLTL or AMC. Never. And Shame on ANYONE who watches THE CHEW. Never have, never will, Nor will I ever go to any Theme Park of theirs. EVER……. Universal Studios it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m glad GAA is off to a sluggish start. Maybe ABC/Disney will finally learn that daytime viewers don’t want see what they selling & we are not going to support any of these replacement shows. Cancelling the soaps was a very big mistake that the network may not bounce back from. I only watch GH & nothing else on this network. So, I say keep up the good work ABC!!!

The only thing ABC…or any network…cares about is the bottom line – MONEY. Soaps are too expensive for them to continue. Years ago, soaps were the cash-cow that made all the money during daytime and kept many other shows on the air. As they became more expensive, the networks decided to replace them with cheap entertainment. The result is a bunch of stupid game/talk/informational shows that cost a fraction of the soaps and the honchos are happy. Who cares if the viewing audience is happy? It’s all about the mighty dollar.

And…All My Children was cancelled too, people! There are some of us out here that cared more about that show than OLTL, so don’t forget us! LOL

The debut show was “too” much, the audience is annoying, rushed, and the guest spot with Liza was awful, she has lost her voice, and spirit, she seemed like she was in a “daze” and the ending was terrible, cutting Liza off in the conversation, and biding goodbyes to the audience, being under the gun with time……too much talk, its annoying…and get rid of those “comics” they add nothing to the show, seemed to be an after thought. Doesn’t feel genuine, it feels stiff, pushed, and it won’t work, if they think it’s going to be the lead in to Katie’s show…….beware….we know that OLTL is history and never coming back………….its a new day…….I have moved on and most fans of the show, I am still mad, but at some point in time you have to let that go, our revenge is the mere fact that they canceled the REVOLUTION that is a small measure of success!!!! It did now work and the executives at ABC/Disney are sweating !!!!!!their empire may be in decline…………

Of course, it was a sluggish start. Its not and can never be the emmy awarding show … ONE LIFE TO LIVE. ABC knows they made a HUGE mistake cancelling OLTL and we the viewers showed that by not watching The Revolution. It only lasted a mere six months. I am glad Tim Gunn still has project runway. I am loving the DALLAS return to TNT after 20 years. I hope I do not have to wait that long for OLTL. ABC will never bring OLTL back. I hope some cable network will see after the success of Dallas, they would be foolish not to bring back OLTL.

Even if this show fails, ABC will replace it with something else. Sooner or later, GH will be gone as it’s obvious ABC wants out of the soap business.

What is the location when Micharl Easton Say on the upper right hand corner : I’m Michael Easton MF on air on soaps??/ Same location & Erika Slezak comes on same location …Where is that at…. Calif. ????????????? WHERE????? Curious….

Michael Fairman I believe is in New York!

I figure he is in california, because the time on our posts are never the same time that I am posting here.

More good news …

Good Afternoon America Loses Steam in Day Two

ONE LIFE TO LIVE IN THE YEAR-AGO TIME PERIOD WAS CONSIDERABLY STRONGER

Two days of metered market data from Nielsen does not a hit or miss make. But with weaker lead-in support, Good Afternoon America on ABC dipped to a 1.6 rating/5 share in the overnights in day two (Tuesday, July 10), which was six percent below the lead-in average (1.7/ 5) and 20 percent below former time period occupant One Life to Live in July 2011 (2.0/ 6). Monday’s opener was a 1.7/ 5 (out of a 1.8/ 5).

Good Afternoon America also declined by margins of 33 percent to 50 percent from the year-ago time period average in the three key female demos as follows:

Women 18-49:
July 2011: 1.0/ 7, Lead-in: 0.5/ 4, Good Afternoon America: 0.5/ 4

Women 25-54:
July 2011: 1.2/ 8, Lead-in: 0.8/ 5, Good Afternoon America: 0.7/ 5

Women 18-34:
July 2011: 0.6/ 4, Lead-in: 0.3/ 2, Good Afternoon America: 0.4/ 2

Stay tuned for more overnight results this week.

GOODBYE GAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lookout here comes back our beloved soaps…I wish this woold happen………Especially for OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep boycotting GAA & Katie Couric when that boloney comes on in Sept………………Other shows Katie did flopped so will this one………….

Am I missing something here? Where will GH go if GAA gets the kind of ratings they want at the 2 pm slot?

Possibly down the tubes after the 50th in April.

If GH was supposed to be the lead-in to Katie’s new show, and they cancel GH, I’d be really worried (especially if I was Katie) about the reaction of what’s left of ABC’s afternoon soap viewers. I’m not so sure they’ve learned from OLTL , AMC and The Revolution. But then again, maybe the risk/benefit bean-counter types have already factored this in.

Abc said that on September 10th general hospital will move there, but how can we trust the rat? I don’t think that good afternoon crap will get the ratings, it will go downhill like the revolution, it’s already off to a very bad start, and we can all hope that it gets even worse.

Don’t even say that….We have to have positive thinking..So many other shows Katie did & were taken off the air…She has been fired from quite a few news shows Etc………………..The same will happen with this one coming in sept………..

JUST DON”T WATCH KATIE COURIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So the ratings & Katie flop all together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I hope ABC realizes that if they cancel “General Hospital” they will never recover. People know what they want to watch… ABC executives do not.

ABC will recover with Revenge from such an incident. However, that is the only thing that would save them. I agree. We can do it, guys! Let’s make sure that this fails as well!

I’m glad that this “news” show is failing. Bring back the soaps, ABC, nobody cares about GAA, part 2!

You got that RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nancy Lee Grahn’s Star-Studded ALS Fundraiser Reveals “I’ll Be There” Video Featuring Soap Opera Notables

Talk about your impressive line-up! It’s a soap fans dream and for a great cause. General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) is prepping her one-night only ALS fundraiser which will feature many of her friends and co-stars.

The benefit is set for May 4th in Glendale, California. Slated to participate are Genie Francis, Jane Elliot, Peter Bergman, Maurice Benard, Eileen Davidson, Thorsten Kaye, Michelle Stafford, Stephen Nichols, Rena Sofer, Jason Thompson, Kelly Monaco, Melissa Claire Egan, Maura West, Kristina Wagner, Gregory Harrison, Trevor St. John, Kate Mansi, Kirsten Storms, Cynthia Watros, and many others.

On Wednesday, Grahn took to her social media and released an “I’ll be there” video shout-out featuring, Monaco, Elliot, Bergman, Bernard, West, Harrison, St. John and more. In a touching and important moment in the new video, Michelle Strogny, who is battling ALS, is featured.

Previously, in speaking with Soap Opera Digest on the impetus of the event, Grahn recalled, “I was actually doing Zoom events during Covid and I met this woman that I just fell in love with, Michelle Strojny. At the time, Michelle had been living with ALS for four years. Now, it’s five years. She is a mom of a teenage son, she has the most wonderful husband, and she has been dealing with this [disease] for quite a while. And obviously, there isn’t a cure yet. It’s not survivable yet. But as she says, it’s not incurable. Nothing is; it’s underfunded. But anyway, I just really dug this woman. She is so grounded and filled with grace, and she spends all of her time working to raise money for the cause. We did a fundraiser for her last year and then I thought, ‘You know what? The soaps don’t ever get together to do something for charity.’ Collectively, we have this amazing community and we don’t collectively use it for a good cause, and I think it’s such an easy thing for us to do and we could potentially really make a difference.”

As GH viewers know, Gregory Harrison is playing the character of Gregory Chase, who is also battling ALS in a touching storyline that is currently playing out shedding a light on this disease.

‘General Hospital’ Writer Shannon Peace Let Go, and Shares on Sprina: “One of My Only Regrets is to Not Have the Opportunity to Develop That ‘Ship’ Further”

As General Hospital’s new head writing team of Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahy gets off the ground and running, there are still changes a foot on the writing team.

Now comes word via breakdown writer Shannon Peace that she is no longer on contract with the long-running ABC soap heading into its 61st season. Peace shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram, thanking the fans, and the show for the opportunity and the importance of diversity in the writers room.

Peace began, “After almost 3 years on staff and 106 episodes penned, I am no longer on contract with General Hospital. Writing for this country’s longest running television serial drama has been an education of epic proportions; I will forever be grateful that I earned my WGA card on a daytime fixture that holds memories for so many.” (Peace pictured below with GH EP Frank Valentini and script writer, Charlotte Gibson from about ten months ago).

Shannon added “Even more importantly, as the sole Black breakdown writer (and only POC in the writers room) during my tenure, I pushed for vital interactions and discussions that prioritized inclusion, visibility, and representation”

The writer pointed to the example of vital interaction when in story, “Stella and Portia’s frank July 2022 conversation about the role race played in Esme’s framing of Trina is just one example of the impact I’m gratified to have had.”

Acknowledging former GH co-head writers was also part of Peace’s farewell expressing, “Appreciation to my former bosses, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor – not only taking a chance on me, but for valuing my opinion and championing my voice.”

Many GH fans know that Peace was key to the development of the love story between Trina Robinson and Spencer Cassadine as played by Tabyana Ali and Nicholas Chavez. Shannon gave a special shout-out to ‘Sprina’ fans, “I also want to thank fans who were supportive of my work, especially the recognition of my love for ‘Sprina’. One of my only regrets is not having to develop that ‘ship’ further.”

She concludes her statement with,”In the aftermath of a historic writer’s strike that shed new light on the troubling ways writers are regarded in daytime, my sincere hope is that General Hospital recommits to valuing staff writer efforts and input, with a more intentional focus on diverse viewpoints — and thrives for another 60 years.”

Accompanying her post, Shannon added, “Thank you all for the love and support these last few years. I hope GH fans get all they hope for and more!”

So, what do you think about GH not renewing Shannon’s contract? Will there be more continued changes afoot? What do you think is the future of ‘Sprina’ anyway at this point as viewers wait to see if Nicholas Chavez officially returns to the show?  Comment below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Learns Britt Died and Tells Anna He Has Been Working For Cates Since November 2021

On the Tuesday, March 26th of General Hospital, Anna (Finola Hughes) and the viewers learn about where Jason (Steve Burton) has been for over two and half years. However, Jason gets some news of his own.

Anna is visiting Jason at the PCPD interrogation room. She asks him if he shot Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), which he flatly denies. Anna believes him, but she tells Jason it doesn’t matter, because video footage shows him on the roof at the time of the shooting

When talk turns to Jason not willing to speak without his lawyer present, Anna can’t grasp why Jason would instead spend an hour alone talking with John Cates (Adam J. Harrington).

Photo: ABC

It is then that Anna brings up that John went by “Jagger” and that the two of them knew each other in high school. Jason doesn’t recall much of his time in high school following his brain injury, but then he gets furious realizing John knew about “Jason’s” past. That is when Jason slams the table and tells Anna, “I’ve been working for John Cates since November 2021.”

Next, Jason explains further that he has been working as an informant for the FBI. Anna wants to know how this came about and he tells her that after the tunnel collapsed, and he couldn’t make it to Britt (Kelly Thiebaud)… all of a sudden he sees Anna’s face drop.  Anna is the first person to tell him that Britt died and was murdered. She tells Jason the killer is in custody, but he continues to be shocked, overwhelmed with tears welling up in his eyes. Realizing he has to pivot to save his life, Jason continues telling Anna how he wound up working with John.

Jason explains that after the tunnel collapse in Greece, FBI agents grabbed him and placed him under arrest and took him to Quantico where he met John. At Quantico, John played a recording of RICO violations and offered Jason a deal if he agreed to be an informant against Pikeman, the illegal arms dealer.

Anna hears from Jason that he thinks Pikeman is selling illegal arms to anyone flagged by the NSA but has ties to the WSB which they needed a civilian to infiltrate their organization as a military soldier, a mercenary.

Jason tells Anna he was a part of the team brought into eliminate Sonny (Maurice Benard). Every time an attempt was made on Sonny’s life over the last two years, a different team was sent to do the job. Anna gets furious when she learns that John told Jason his job was to kill Sonny and she was with John at the warehouse that night. Jason ensured the sniper missed Sonny and left the rifle behind. However, they were supposed to meet an extraction team. Before he was shot, Dante saw it was Jason on the roof and when he turned around with his hands over his head, Dante was shot by the other guy. Jason says if Dante dies, he’ll be charged with capital murder and then will be useless to the FBI.

Meanwhile, John visits Bobbie’s and runs into Carly (Laura Wright). She learns Jason is in custody and is going to head to the PCPD. Before she does, Carly has some words with Cates when she learns not only does John have a vendetta against Sonny, but Jason too.  Carly tells John he should recuse himself from the case.

So, what did you think about the moment when Jason learned Britt died? What do you think of Jason’s return storyline thus far and what we learned about Jagger/Jason and more? Comment below. But first, check out a moment from today’s GH with Jason and Anna.
