Greg Vaughan To Exit Days of our Lives!

For those who were speculating that Days of our Lives Greg Vaughan (Eric Brady) was on his way out the door, apparently he is done at DAYS.

Back in August, Greg revealed on social media he has signed a contract extension to stay with the NBC soap opera.  At that time many speculated that it could be just to wrap up story.  And today, according to Serial Scoop, that is indeed the case. The outlet is reporting that the powers-that-be at DAYS decided to write out the character of Eric Brady.

In our latest video interview with Greg alongside Peggy McCay (Video of the Day MF Soaps homepage) from Day of DAYS earlier this month, the actor previewed Eric’s dark turn and a pending romance with Jennifer Horton (Melissa Reeves).

As viewers know, it also looks like the former priest is about to have a battle with the bottle!  Vaughan took over the role of Eric back in 2012.   Greg was also seen on Hallmark’s holiday movie on Sunday night, The Christmas Note.

So, what do you think about the news that Greg is departing DAYS?  How do you think he will exit the canvas? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

I would rather they get rid of Daniel Jonas.

Well, Christie, I think you’ll be happy.

It’s pretty much a given that Eric’s drinking will lead to him killing Daniel in a drunk driving accident which will land Eric in prison.

So very sad! Greg Vaughn always comes off as an inherently nice person whatever role he is playing–don’t like to see this “dark turn.”

*Chrystie

Someone mentioned Daniel is killed by a drunk-driven Eric!

I have been waiting for the character of Daniel to leave for years!

He is going also.. soon

Already on the way out.

oh gawd, me TOO!!

They are.

Good riddance to Dr. Dan’s character (nothing against SC). Daniel’s character is SOOOO boring.

I feel the same as you, Mollie—I do like both actors but they are both being wasted on the show to the point that I don’t want to see the characters. I would rather they both find other projects worthy of what they can do.

I saw this coming, what a shame. Greg is a terrific actor. Time for GH, to call Greg and bring him back as Lucky Spencer.

I feel the same way.. I would love to see him go back as Lucky

I agree with you Rosanne, I hope Greg comes back as Lucky Spencer. Thanks for replying, have a nice day.

Totally agree. GH should bring him back.

YUP Eric will go to Rehab !

Yes Michael, Greg needs to come back to GH PRONTO. LOL.

I sincerely hope Greg doesn’t make the mistake of trusting the alphabet people again.

You do realize the people who fired Greg Vaughan from GH (Frons, Phelps, Guza) are no longer with ABC daytime? They are the ones who did him wrong when they approached Jonathan Jackson about returning to play Lucky. One thing was obvious from Lucky’s return last summer and that is this character is needed on the show for Liz and the boys and JJ only came back for those episodes to honor Tony Geary. Frank, Jean, and Shelly need to call GV as soon as possible and offer him a 2-3 year deal to return as Lucky. JJ will probably never come back to play Lucky again on a full time basis so give Lucky back to GV who was very good in playing an older version of Lucky.

I’d love him back as Lucky, but as Llanviewer717 said, should he trust the people who fired him because he wasn’t Jonathan Jackson? I didn’t need JJ back on GH – and was anyone surprised that after coming back, he left again. GH had Greg for 6 years and then got rid of him so they could have JJ for 2 years. Had they never fired him, Greg would be going on 12 years as Lucky. In GH’s current defense, it was different people who fired him. A paycheck is a paycheck. Come back to GH Greg!!

We all seem to agree!! The character of Lucky the last we saw of him is a complete mess and needs to show up for his family…although I would hate to see him stuck with Elizabeth…ugh.

Oh I agree, since Jonathan Jackson is pretty tied up with Nashville, it’s about time GH invites Greg to come back to the role JJ took out from under him. Although, he might not want the role back!

It is really sad to see such talent leave, I only hope he returns to GH or could be a recast Billy Abbott (Y&R)

YES! Billy Abbott. He is a good actor who could carry the role, great looking, charming and funny….great idea. SO much better than re-casting Billy with the actor who played Patrick Drake on GH (as was the scuttle butt). HE is a complete miscast.

So, yes, GV for Billy Abbott 🙂

Jason Thompson doesnt look like an Abbott BUT he is a good actor. It may work out. Better than Burgess!

He was already on Y&R as DIego.

Jason Thompson (Patrick – GH) is going to be the new Billy Abbott. They have not announced it yet.

That sounds like rumors…I love Jason and thought they wasted his talent lately. I hope EJ recast on DOOL

WOW! Mike I was thinking Lucky at GH but he would work as Billy for sure.

Once again, another missed opportunity. DAYS has really improved, but every storyline cannot be based on upon something like that was done in the 80’s. In order to succeed, the show must be mult-generational. Vaughan is a good actor and totally wasted.

So…I’m thinking that means that Lucky is coming back to General Hospital?

Greg is such a warm hearted human being and I wish he had a role that really got him… So deeply sad to see him leave Days! But maybe this opens the door for a new character on GH, B and B or Y and R!

Then hopefully he returns to GH as Lucky…

I was thinking the same thing Jim. Would love him to return to GH as Lucky!

Sad he is leaving. With Sami, Will, & Carrie all off canvas it seems a shame. He certainly shouldn’t be killed off. Take a hiatus to see Carrie & get his life together. Then bring him back with a real story.

may as well have them all off including Belle too— hell, John & Doc weren’t even invited to the Brady Pub for T-Day – what the hell?

I wondered about that too! And what did Adrienne and Lucas do for Thanksgiving? Was Doug there? I didn’t see him.

that surprised me as well… seeing Belle and Claire show up… to see her soon to be ex-husband ?

although, I liked Marlena reaction when Belle showed up at the door… it’s going to be nice to see Marlena reacting to someone “new” what with Will gone

I had hoped to see more magic and spark… with John and Marlena… so far not much has surfaced

I really do not see much in the way of even caring about Johns past ? what’s the point?

DAYS production: hello !?!?

give Paul a love interest

Doug wasnt there. Lucas with Kate maybe? No turkey for them! 20 years later, does anyone care @ John’s parents at all? I sure dont. Lazy storytelling and no imagination for the Days writers to come up with something. I dont like this Belle.

I’m with mrsnoahdrake… where the hell was Lucas & Adrienne?? I loved John & Marlena back in the day, but now that I’m older his acting just rakes on my nerves. It would be interesting to see if she could strike up some chemistry with Roman. Or bring back original Roman AS Roman and not that stupid Alex North crap. Just my opinion.

I don’t think he should go .I wanted him and Nicole back together and Danielle back with Jennifer but since he has to go then put him back in the church as a missionary over in India

I hate that he is leaving! Greg is so personable and is an awesome actor! Shame on Days!!!!!

I’m sad. Another great actor falls prey to writers.

A romance with Jennifer?? A dark turn? Why can’t one character on this show have a happy ending? Let Eric go back to the priesthood instead of dragging the character through the depressing theme that the 50th year is turning out to be.

A romance with Jennifer is a death knell….Jack, Daniel now Eric. Jennifer must bore them to death or make prison preferable. Jennifer needs some better writing that gives her something INTERESTING to do.

Glad to see Greg on Hallmark, but sorry he is leaving Days. They should have left him with Nicole. They were a good couple, far better for her than the dull Dr. Daniel. I also hope he might reappear on GH, although they have very poor story lines just now. Maybe if they kick Valentini out, and bring Lucky Spencer back to PC.

Please, not GH for Greg Vaughn. He’s too good for that show!
Would love to see GV re-cast as Billy Abbot on Y&R.

He’s a pretty wonderful guy, but his character hasn’t been written for very well at all. Eric is pretty much a cardboard cutout.
A wasted opportunity.

I agree, I’m not really upset about this.

Seems like when things are so good, DAYS is making changes. Of course, these were put into play months ago with NBC’s extreme lead time for DAYS, but this one hurts. I like the actor. I like the character.

Except all the new teens I am SO not interested in watching! Even when they had teen stories back in the 80s, characters like Jennifer, pete and Melissa were older. Pretty sure not many want to see a romance for Ciara!
Meanwhile days is on a killing spree.
Thought nicole & eric made a promising couple at one time til she got with that drip Dr. Jonas

finished with Days. Hopes it gets cancelled. Give me a break with some of the plots coming up. John looking into his past. Been doing this for the last 20 years. Sad. Looks like the Herdandez family is taking over the Brady’s See ya Days.

He was never utilized that well on Days.

I’d rather see him on a new soap rather than go back to GH. He was treated so poorly there when they dumped him simply because they could get JJ back for a few months.

Different bosses back then and now I think the network realizes JJ has his sights permanently set on other dreams.

Another example of a good actor that was given garbage for story purposes. As a result, his exit can’t come soon enough for me. I’m tired of his angry outbursts and his whining/crying. At the point he accused Nicole of raping him, there was very little to ever root for. I hope the actor is snatched up quickly by another show that will utilize him to his potential.

Since Jonathan Jackson is busy with Nashville, maybe they will bring him back on GH as Lucky. Or write him a new fresh role on GH… a long lost Q as the spawn of Jimmie Lee.

Good riddance. All that man does is have a continual scowl on his face. I hope General Hospital stays far away from this tragic excuse of an actor. He is one of the worst characters on DAYS and one of the most awful actors all together. He spent the last two years yelling at Nicole, Serena and every one else. If he wasn’t yelling or pouting he was screwing someone. Good riddance, adieu, so long, farewell GOODBYE.

Poor writing for sure.

Totally should have recast ed this role! Wonder where this will leave Nicole once Daniel leaves?

Interesting thought…. Nicole is dating Daniel is real life, so with the lack of story, doubtful she would be interested in sticking around….

What a terrible decision by TPTB. Greg is a fine actor who does a wonderful job. There is such story potential for Eric. This makes me very sad. I wish Greg much success in his future.

I’m actually not that upset, hopefully they will recast Eric.

Who are you thinking, Blake? It would be interesting to see what Brandon Barrash would do with the role. (Though I had hoped they would bring him in as one of Justin’s other sons or as Theresa’s brother Andrew.) I doubt Jason Thompson would be interested in going to Days, but he could be the recast.

I’m not sure. Since Greg is saying that Eric is going to the dark side. I’m afraid he will end up doing something bad like drunk driving and killing someone and go to jail since it seems they are writing Eric off.

So sorry to hear this, Nicole & Eric are one of my favorite couples. Don’t understand why they never got a real chance.

Greg Vaughn’s talent has been wasted on DAYS. I was hoping to see Nicole and Eric get back together once Daniel died, but no such luck!
Looks like they will pair Nicole with the new guy – Daniel’s friend.
I really liked Greg with Kelly Monaco as Lucky & Sam, but don’t think they will go there again on GH for a long time. Back to Jasam vs. Liason! Sigh! It gets old.

Well if Jason stays with Liz and Patrick is leaving, Lucky and Sam version 2.0!

of… thee 5 actors who were so overused… prior to this new writing team… and the demise of Will and Sonny

Daniel, Eric, Brady, Nicole, and Jennifer…. over kill !

Greg Vaughan is the one I would have preferred to have stayed…

once again… it’s a big fan loss… as they never developed him past the Priesthood!
NOW I really will miss … “Father Eric”

DAYS production… do not kill off another beloved family member

Why are all the good looking guys leaving Days? Greg is so damn handsome. The writing for his character has been terrible. Hated the Serena storyline. Poor Nicole without both men. Guess that’s why they casted the new guy who looks like Shawn.

Really sad. I only watched because of his story with Nicole. I guess all the years I have been watching soaps, I don’t understand them. As an example why do some soaps keep characters for years, but can’t find room for a guy like Greg Vaughn. He had so much potential. I wish him the best of luck. He seems so sincere and so great with his fans. Hate to see a person get fired.

Wow, Days is a revolving door! Sorry, GV will be going.

I really like this actor and there was such potential for the Eric character. Too bad!

first i get excited about jason cook only to find out he s only temporary…
now eric out too?!
eric was my fave lead male…i thought the show was slowl burning him and nicole to be reunited?!… big mistake, eric s strong and silent approach was so rare to watch.
i ll miss him on the show… to many drastic changes… no more will and sonny, no jj and paige… and now no eric… i think maybe no more days for me…

I hate that he’s leaving. Such a nice actor. He will be missed..

I wish Greg should stay in days of our lives. He is good actor . wish him good luck !

Here we go again. ays just can’t seem to find the right demographic mix. They need actors in that 30 to 40 age range. If they wanted to get rid of a Brady it should be barnacle Roman not Eric.

Recast him keep Eric on the show

With all the actors leaving and new ones coming in I’m on the way out the door. Have only been watching about 3 years and since all the ones I am used to leaving what is the use of watching. Bye, bye Days

his talents were terribly misused at dool – his storylines were awful – greg spoke out several times about how dissatisfied he was with the storylines – i totally understand why he didn’t sign a new contract………………what a waste of a talented actor!

Nicole spent a year crying for Eric while he was a priest. Now suddenly Daniel is her one true love and Eric a mere friend. The story isn’t believable. Days can write good stories and then totally miss the ball with others. The Aiden story as someone who would kill Hope also didn’t sell. I love Days but I think their new path will not end well for the show. Many of the characters that left or leaving held audiences. I’m not interested in grown up Ciara, Joey, Theo, Daniel’s friend, Rafe’s father or Bell’s family. Characters like Paige, Will, Clyde and Aiden were interesting watchable characters. Letting Ben Weston go is understandable but others just to clear the way for those no one want to watch is not.

So agree with everything you said.

this is going to be a hard sell from here on out

thee past 3 months ; dont get me wrong; was so much cause celebre

what a FANtastic TREAT

I’m worried by all the departures of immense talent…

taking Wally Kurth and Judi Evans OFF CONTRACT?

OK… wrong thread… I’ve loved Greg Vaughan… on DAYS … (yes) for his LOOKS and with Eileen Davidson (because they never wrote for him)

I definetely enjoyed his acting skill and mindset at GH as Lucky

it’s all a terrible waste… he could have been revived and helped this show

I want him back on GH and back with Sam!!!!

ABC, I stuck with you through Fluke, I am sticking through this long drawn out Jason reveal, PLEASE sign Greg Vaughan to play Lucky Spenser again! He was so good in a near impossible recast. Can you imagine how great it would be to mix Lucky into all the drama surround Liz AND with his sister Lulu! Plus, Laura would have all her kids together again. Come on, its Christmas!

Greg has been boring since he started. He was not a good choice for a recast. I’m sad to see the character of Eric go as I think he has potential, but not in the current reincarnation. Let him go and maybe they can bring the recast character back in the future.

The writers didn’t really help Greg as story after he stopped being a priest was pretty non-existent.

There have been so many terrific actors on many shows whose talents have been wasted [Michael Easton comes to mind first], and Greg Vaughan is just the latest. I join others in hoping to see him return to G.H. as Lucky, but he might be better to try his hand at primetime. He’s certainly talented enough.

I wish him the very best in his next roles, and hope to see him on my TV screen again soon – daytime or nighttime. If it’s the latter, someone wiser than TPTB at Days could give him a starring role in a new show next year. Greg would definitely not disappoint!

Oh, good, another depressing story about addiction and (reportedly) murder (re: Daniel).

😐

I remember the days when Days knew how to weave heavier stories with lighter stories, drama with comedy. It wasn’t all so bleak then. Now, it’s re drying to a one-note dirge. It’s utterly depressing, and I’m sad to see them go this direction again. Killing off sizable portions of the cast in short order is not goin to do them many favors. *sigh*

PLEASE GH and FRANK VALENTINE get Greg back as Lucky ASAP!!!!! Ive been waiting years for for an opportunity for him to leave DAYS and go back to GH! Lucky is my fav male on GH and Greg was my fav Lucky!!!! 🙂 Although I loved them all! But Jonathon still looks like a child and Greg was the adult Lucky IMO!
Without Anthony Geary they dont need Jonathon Jackson 🙂

Good, now he can come back to GH!! Much more believeable as a cop than Jonathan Jackson IMO.

Well, I don’t have anything against the actor who portrays him but Eric is about as
exciting as dry white bread.
If this show wants to survive, and at this point even that is something worth deliberating, they need to do something EDGY and different. Move on from this “Mary is pregnant but the real father is John” bit and come into the 21st century. Have Eric decide that he likes to wear woman’s clothing at night or have Abigail so completely zonked out by Ben’s treatment that she develops a dual personality complex and goes out at night in a dark wig and too much make-up and hanging out at Tranny bars. Then she meets Eric and discovers his secret. Ridiculous? Of course it is but let me tell you it would be a LOT more interesting than this same-old same-old they’ve been shelling out. The writers really sincerely need to come up with some new and innovative storylines!

This really saddens me about Greg leaving. I have always loved his character as Eric. Why can’t Days leave well enough alone? Why don’t they get rid of characters like Theresa, Eve, and Eduardo and Ben? To me these characters have no consequence to Days anymore. They should keep the people that really matter to the fans like Eric, Bo, and Sean.

I really like Greg but his character was so boring and going nowhere. It is ashame they couldnt find another woman for him.I wish him well.Oh yes I was so surprised when I saw he was leaving because I thought he just signed on for a longer period of time

I am really sad that Greg vaughan is leaving days. He is my favourite character. I hope he will end up with Nicole before he leaves. I will truly miss him

This week, DAYS head scribe, Ron Carlivati, confirmed that, and told Michael Fairman TV on the decision of the scripts the team submitted: “I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, and then there was Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s (Louise Sorel) crashing the reading of the will.”

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves Talk Return to DAYS for Doug’s Funeral, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Their Enduring Friendship

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on December 3rd. The story will feature emotional and heart-tugging scenes of Doug Williams funeral and honor his portrayer, the beloved Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th at the age of 98.

While the actors, producers, and crew took a lunch time break to pose for some pictures and speak with the press, they knew they would have to get back to taping the funeral, which was going to make it a tough day, but also cathartic for all who loved Bill Hayes.

Several returns have thus far been announced including; Melissa Reeves reprising her signature role of Jennifer Horton (a part she first played in 1985), and Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux. Reeves had last appeared on the show back in 2021, and she was replaced by Emmy-winner Cady McClain in her absence when Jennifer was in storylines. In real-life, Melissa had moved full-time to Tennessee along with her husband, Scott Reeves (ex-DAYS, GH, Y&R). Now, and as previously reported, Reeves will first appear back on DAYS for the Thanksgiving episodes with the Hortons.

Photo: JPI

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Matt and Melissa during the 15,000th episode celebration to get their take on: being back for these special episodes, how it has been working with and watching Susan Seaforth Hayes portray Julie’s grief over losing Doug, and how they have supported each other through the years. Check out what they shared below.

Melissa, you are back on the set of Days of our Lives for this very emotional and special moment in the series history. How does it feel?

MELISSA: Oh, my goodness. I am honored. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but to be here for Bill. He was like my real-life dance partner. He taught me how to ballroom dance. And to be here for Susan, of course, who’s just been our sweet hero this whole week. We’re just following her lead. She’s just been this incredibly strong example for us in the midst of this trial and season of her life. She is like just lifting us all up with her. It’s been incredible.

I was at Bill Hayes memorial service which was truly incredible and I know at the time you were in Tennessee. It was moving and celebratory of his life, all at the same time.

MELISSA: That’s all I have heard. I have to watch it on You Tube. They said it was just a real celebration of his life and I love that.

Photo: JPI

This must be difficult for Susan Seaforth Hayes depicting the death of Doug, when she is still grieving the loss of her beloved husband. (Susan pictured above with the returning Stephen Schnetzer who plays her on-screen brother, Steve Olson).

MELISSA: I’m sure Susan has those moments at home by herself, but she’s so good at being a leader and leading all of us. We’re following her, you know, and she’s like, “This is how I want to feel today.” And we’re just going along with her, you know? It’s so sweet.

Photo: JPI

How is it to see Matt Ashford again live and in-person?

MELISSA: You know, Matt and I can go years without talking, or seeing each other, and then the minute we see each other we’re chatting away.

MATT: Melissa was out on set doing a scene yesterday on the phone talking to a stage manager; as she was telling some really tough news on the phone. I’m like crying in the background, literally, I’m off-stage crying.

MELISSA: And then we get like back into normal life, and we’re like, okay, “What’s happening? What’s happening with this … or what’s happening with that?”

I had read, Melissa, that you were in touch with Matt about if there night be a possibility for you to reprise your role as Jennifer for these special episodes?

MELISSA: Yes. Well, Matt was like, “Hey! Would you want to come back? “And I was like, “Matt, you know, I would always come back. ”

MATT:  Every time I come here to Days of our Lives, they ask, “Where’s Missy? How’s Missy?” Everybody backstage says, “I miss her.” All of the crew is asking about her and saying, “It would be nice to see Missy. Nothing wrong with you Matt, but …”  They said, “Where is she?” I said, “She wants to come!”

Photo: JPI

There are some beautiful photos of Missy and Bill and Susan thorough the years that I found. It just reminded me of just the deep and entrenched history we all have had with the show, personally and professionally.

MATT: Missy is roughly the age where Francis Reid (ex-Alice Horton) was when she started the show, which is just crazy.

Photo: JPI

I’ve always said Missy was going to be the next generation Alice. Do you feel that Jennifer is the heir apparent matriarch of the Horton family?

MELISSA: Yes. I mean, this has been greatest blessing of my life, and that would be great. I told Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of our Lives) when I was 17 that this show would be my life. Ken always told me, “This is your home,” and I’ve always felt like that.

How have gotten through the scenes watching Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie go through the loss of Doug?

MATT: Susan is bringing her best performance life for her and Bill. I mean, she’s a showbiz baby. She always has been one hundred percent, and she’s doing it for him, and this is who they’ve always been. So, you’re seeing this amazing performance colored by her life. She has her private life as Susan, but she has enough plugged into Julie that she’s done amazing work. The director, producers and writers are giving her room to live in these moments and it’s quite wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Have you already broken down in tears during the taping?

MELISSA: Yesterday, but today’s taping of the actual funeral I think they want us to try and be just more celebratory.

MATT: I mean, it is a beautiful long life for Bill Hayes and his character of Doug Williams, and so it will be about that. Then, you get a bunch of us together in the church pews, and there’s going to be hijinks.

MELISSA: We all have been through the waves of grief. You have that awful cry and then all of a sudden you feel okay.  There are those family situations we are portraying where you’re like, “What do we do? What do we do now? You know, no one knows what to do. But, it’s so sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the scenes all turn out.

So, are you glad that Matt and Melissa are back for the 15K episode and Doug’s funeral? From what we can tell, it’s going to be quite an emotional journey for Days of our Lives fans, and especially the performance of Susan Seaforth Hayes,

Ron Carlivati Talks on Decision to Make Days of our Lives 15000th Episode About Doug’s Funeral, and Previews Chances for WGA Award

This week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode. In of it itself, that is an incredible accomplishment for the long-running soap opera currently streaming on Peacock.

However, this on set gathering was a bit different. Though the show is celebrating their achievement, they are also in the middle of taping scenes surrounding the death and the funeral of Doug Williams, played by the late Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th of this year at the age of 98.

As previously revealed many longtime favorites are back to honor Bill and the character of Doug including: Gloria Loring (Liz), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Matthew Ashford (Jack), Maree Cheatham (Marie), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Stephen Schnetzer (Steve) to name but a few.

Photo: JPI

Michael Fairman TV was in attendance and spoke with Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati to gain some insight into how the 15,000 episode was crafted and the decision to honor the character of Doug Williams and Bill Hayes as its epicenter. In addition, Ron weighed-in on this Sunday’s April 14th WGA (Writers Guild of America) Awards, where he and his writing team are facing off with General Hospital for the daytime drama prize. Here’s what Ron shared below.

Was this your idea to make the 15,000th episode centered around Doug’s funeral and passing?

RON: It was. When you’re looking at it, and laying out the calendar for the whole year and you see 15,000 is coming up, we’re like, “What are we going to do?” And then, we got the news that Bill had passed away and something kind of clicked. I was like, “We should honor Doug on that show.” So then, we started to kind of build around that … when does he pass away? How does he pass away? Who could come back? You know, it’s a lot.  I’m very pleased with the returns that we got as there’s so much that you could do. We wanted everybody we could get. So, we put together a wish list and Janet Drucker (co-executive producer, Days of our Lives) made it happen.

Photo: JPI

You have Melissa Reeves back as Jennifer, when the role was last played by Cady McClain. What has it meant to have Missy back for these shows?

RON: It was so nice to see Missy Reeves. I think Cady has done such a good job, but on the 15,000th episode to see Missy as Jennifer, it’s a big deal. So having her was great, and overall, the milestone was a big undertaking, because you want to live up to it. You want the 15,000th episode to be good. Now, it has a lot of real emotion that you’re playing. because for the cast and the crew they’re honoring Bill Hayes just as much as we’re honoring Doug Williams.

Photo: JPI

Was it hard for you and the team to write this episode?

RON: Yes. I’ll tell you why it was hard to write.  When I wrote, for example, Asa’s (Phillip Carey) death on One Life to Live or Victor’s (John Aniston) on DAYS, Asa is a different type of character. Like, you could have characters going, “Oh! I’m glad he is dead.” You could have different points of view, but with Doug, you’re not having that. Every person loves this man. No one had a bad relationship with him. So, you’re challenge as a writer is how do you make it that not everybody’s saying the same thing and doing the same thing. And so, we tried to find ways to make the episode about all the familial relationships and yet, how do you make it about Doug and yet broaden the scope.

Photo: JPI

I had spoken to Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), a week after Bill’s memorial, for an interview. She said that she felt very fortunate that you did include her on discussions of how you would tackle Doug’s passing. How did that conversation go?

RON: First, I attended Bill’s funeral, which was incredible. I said to so many people it was an emotional service, but it was hard to be sad at this. The guy had an incredible life and it was an incredible celebration. And so, you’re sitting there watching this knowing that you now have to write something similar. And how do you write something that lives up to what you just witnessed? I wanted to talk to Susan to get her thoughts about, you know, how much do you want this to be about keeping Bill separate from Doug. How comfortable are you sharing your grief. She was incredible to talk to. It was a great chat.

You’re in the middle of taping these major scenes for the 15,000 episode to air in December. How do you think it’s going? Have you seen any of the scenes?

RON:  I haven’t seeing anything. I mean, we were still making changes to the script up till this morning!

The Writers Guild Awards are this Sunday, April 14th and once again this year there are two daytime drama nominees, General Hospital and Days of our Lives. How are you feeling about your chances this year?

RON: It is often just GH and us in the category. I’ve won three years in a row, so I’m kind of feeling like it’s their turn.

What episodes did you submit for contention? If I recall, they had to do with Victor’s memorial.

RON: The episodes we submitted were centered around Victor’s funeral. I think one has story with Vivian (Louise Sorel). We had some fun stuff, we had some emotional stuff at Victor’s death, and I am pretty sure that our submission was three episodes right around that time.

Did you make the decision to go with those episodes because there was a mix of humor and drama?

RON: I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, then there’s Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s crashing the reading of the will. So, we had a lot of fun and it’s hard sometimes to pick three that tell a story, as opposed to submitting for the Daytime Emmys, where the writing team only submits two shows. So, we shall see how it goes on Sunday.
