Matt Lauer Signs New Deal with TODAY! Could it impact the future of DAYS?

Courtesy/NBC

Courtesy/NBC

The Today’s Shows, Matt Lauer has signed a new deal with NBC that also could give the favorite morning show a fifth hour designed specifically for Laurer, or he could end up with his own daytime show that ultimately could spell some concern for NBC’s only soap left on the air, Days of our Lives!

According to TV Guide, “Lauer’s new agreement keeps him in the co-anchor chair of the morning show for four years and includes a program development deal, which could give him an ownership stake in a syndicated show outside of Today, The contract could earn him in the neighborhood of $100 million, according to people familiar with the deal.

One idea already being kicked around is spinning off Lauer’s regular segment “Today‘s Professionals,” in which he spars over hot-button issues with a panel that includes Star Jones, Donny Deutsch and Dr. Nancy Silverman! The segment could also be developed into a fifth hour of Today.  With Lauer signed, Today will try to strengthen its hand in other ways, Ryan Seacrest, who had discussions with NBC about taking over Today had Lauer left, will have a role on the program as part of his new deal with NBC Universal; he’ll also cover the Olympics for NBC in prime time. “

So how many hours of one show can anyone sit through? What if Lauer got his own timeslot and the network canceled DAYS?  Let us know your thoughts!

I really hope this doesn’t happen. We don’t need more of the TODAY show. I really wish networks would realize soap operas are worth investing in!

me to .. such a big fan of the soaps from canada

There are just so many hours you can spend watching and listening to the news ,If nbc cancels days of our lives ,there just as dopy as abc/disney,Soaps are not dying the networks are killing them they want to change the whole format of daytime viewing ,well its not going to work for me I wont watch ,I will turn on the I d channel, the last thing I want to watch is matt laurer talk for 5 hours erika slezak, susan lucci ,finola huges yes, matt laurer hell no.

Why do they have so much money to waste paying these idiots but no money to keep the soaps? There’s too much mindless talking already on T.V.! We need more scripted shows not stupid reality shows or more news!

I cant figure it out ,the big guys want the money in there own pockets ,there willing to pay for these talk shows but for a good scripted drama they dont want any part of them anymore. Im a news junkie myself but there is no way I want to hear it for 5 long hours.with the same person, boring. Now 5 hours of soap operas I will watch.

I think that the networks are wanting to save money but I also am beginning to think they are getting lazy and dont want there afternoons filled up with drama ,they can hire a mouth piece cheap, there not worth the money there going to get paid but it puts more money in the big wigs pockets but at the same time these use to be great networks are no more.the afternoons were loaded with great soaps and one by one they were canceled I dont think they care, they should because the shows that have been taken over where the soaps use to be are all garbage there is nothing special about them and there is nothing special about abc,nbc and cbs there lost in a sea of other trash you can find all over the place.Seriously I hope this all comes back and bites them in the ass.

Oh Lordy. Just what we need–MORE Today show added to the 27000 hours a day its already on the air. I truly can’t believe people actually sit through all that nonsense! Hoda and CL? Are they drunk all day or what? Completely stupid, vapid women who give intelligent ones a bad name. I used to love me some Matt Lauer, but another hour of that show is two hours too many.

Oh god…………….
I hope it doesn’t take DAYS timeslot!

The timeslot of Days is the only that is available. All the other timeslots belongs to the affiliates and they’ll never give it back to the network.

Just pray that Today doesn’t get a fifth hour. Because if it does, then it’s good bye Days of Our Lives.

Oh dear God! Do I really need another hour of the Today Show? Of course if those panels get as plastered as Kathy Lee and Hoda it would be a great watch, but we all know we never get that lucky.

sadly i think days will end 2013 i love days but time is diffrent cw network decide to go online since eceh episode got 2 milion this is not much to hold a network so they move for the intrnet ipad and suce, well it was clear to me when abc started thet nbc will go to beside now comcast in control and they known as hard

Actually CBS (not NBC) is the one that started this trend of cancelling soaps operas (GL & ATWT) for junks shows.

ABC and NBC are just following the footsteps of CBS.

Well one could argue the point that when NBC cancelled AW, Santa Barbara and Passions it started the trend… AW was also on a creative upswing when it was cancelled.

It’s just LauER, not the extra “er,” but I guess maybe he needs that extra “er” if he wants anyone to sit through yet another hour of the TODAY whow. I already stated in a previous post that I quit watching after they aired the video from the murderer in the Virginia Tech shootings.

Ultimately, it will depend on whether Sony AND NBC want to continue with DAYS and where there is room for it.

First of all, I have never liked Matt Lauer. I think he’s boring and void of personality. If [Heaven forbid] they cancel Days to give him the timeslot, my “dislike” will morph into something a lot stronger. I’ve watched Days since 1968 & will definitely NOT EVER, EVER EVER watch anything that replaces it.
To those that enjoy watching the Today “marathon” every day, good riddance to them. But the rest of us deserve to enjoy our favorite shows, too, without Today wiping them off the face of the earth.

I happen to like Matt Lauer and like shows that discuss hot topics from different perspectives (although sometimes I am not impressed with the panelists), but I wish Days could get its act together (think out of the box and be more creative) and develop better quality drama and storylines that would deal with more compelling and contemporary issues (like the Will/Gay storyline), and it could stay on the air also. Matt could have his show, and if Days could improve, it could stay on also. I fear if Days does not improve, the sand will run out of the hour glass with all of these other shows in the race.

I like Matt Lauer also. I agree with your comment about the fact that if DAYS does not improve their writing and soon and their ratings do not go up then they will be off the year come end of the year. The writers at DAYS keep forcing us to watch couples that are just NOT working and refusing to give EJAMI a FAIR chance. Try something new because if they dont then I wont be sorry that they have gone off the air.

I don’t know anyone who wants to watch Matt Lauer for 5 hours. he’s so full of himself.

I hope that Matt can hold on for bathroom after his 5 hours show get done.(hee hee)

OMG NO! He’s a bore. The shows a bore!

Well, with the crap that Days is spewing out right now, the show I’ve been watching for 30 years has become unwatchable. I don’t even watch anymore. Something needs to change. The re-boot sucks. The storyline sucks. They brought back crappy characters. I want to see Chloe, Shawn D., Belle, Mimi etc, back, and more DiMera action. The younger set needs to go. They are terrible.

Agreed!!!!!!

More Dimera action? How much more can ya get? Personally, I’ve had enough Dimera action. Stephano vs. John is well over done… To the new headwriters coming to Days, go watch GL from early 90s….tell compelling storylines like that.

Days is just now starting to bring Ejami to viewers! Gods FORBID ANYTHING interrupt that! Ejami have been waited and longed for for over six years.
NBC needs only ensure that this time they are delivered and Days’ ratings will be too good for even the thought of cancellation.

I hope EJAMI get their chance because EJOLE are awful and are soooooooo boring, I have gone crazy on my nail biting. I cant wait for EJAMI but sadly with Gary Tomlin who loves SAFE we may not get our EJAMI.

I am praying that there’s been a direct order to fly with Ejami already! It almost doesn’t matter what they write, just put them in scenes together, daily! (Ok, none of that Sami wants someone else or EJ makes her tell their son she doesn’t love him shlt!)
Ejami WOULD bring Days so much buzz! Viewers EAT them up! I know, I’ve watched my whole life and NOTHING can get me this excited on a soap!

So u would rather have a rapist with his victim, Avelina? EJole is true love, EJami is filthy and disgustng. People who love their spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend do NOT rape them!

Your comment beneath notice? ~~You bet! 😉

Whattaya mean beneath notice?

100 million dollars —–all I can ask is “WHY” ?

Good question

oh,oh..that’s SMELL AS spell T-R-O-U-B-L-E for Days of Our Lives, pls just leave Days alone.. we got enough problem for more talk shows.
I saw it from website, but can’t tell u where I found it…..it say here:ABC is “quietly” informing affiliates that The Revolution has been cancelled.
Alas, this does not mean that GH automatically moves into that 2 p.m. spot, but it’s a beginning.
As far as ratings, all the ratings focused on was comparing The Chew to All My Children thus far, but that was an interesting read. While The Chew is doing acceptably, it’s eroding in the wrong demographic.
ABC made a big mistake. Let’s hope it doesn’t go on making more.

I don’t watch Days but as a fan of the soap genre who just lost AMC and OLTL and have been on edge over GH’s future, I can relate to how Days fans must feel. All I can say is they better be making their voices heard, there are so many FB groups out there supporting all soaps. They can also go to savethesoapgenre.com to find some simple tasks they can do.

rediculous !! news figurs are just reading the news not ACTUALLY doing anything else..just like sports figures are wayyyy over paid!! this better not kncok days of our lives off the air or soap fans will boycott nbc too!! right?/any one with me ??

I recently started watching Days as a somewhat replacement for AMC. To lose another soap would suck. The networks say soaps are too expensive. If that is true how can NBC justify giving Matt Laure $100 M. Makes no sense at all.

I hope this doesn’t mean the end for Days. The show does not need to be cancelled, especially with another Today show hour, ugh! They have a great cast especially right now, they just need better written stories and hopefully Lorraine Broderick will be bringing kick ass stories to the show. And hopefully the ratings will get better so NBC will want to keep Days around.

I would hate to see DAYS cancelled simply for Matt Lauer. I mean I like the guy and all but how many hours does the Today show really need to take up? Either way I don’t think it would be fair to cancel DAYS because of it. Put DAYS in an afternoon time slot like it is for me if they really need to add an extra hour for Matt.

I don’t watch DAYS any longer but I don’t want it to go off the air. We need to be saving the genre!! Do we need a 5th hour of the Today Show, REALLY? Don’t ge me wrong, Matt is pretty much the ONLY reason I watch The Today Show when I can. But NBC needs to leave DAYS where it is!! Learn from ABC, don’t follow in their disastrous path!!!

Give me a break.I watch the Today show because of the boycott on ABC and after the first hour I am done.Matt Lauer interupts the people he interveiws all the time. Can’t stand him.But not watching ABC.Ann Curry is boring to.Guess I’ll find another morning show maybe CBs.Not putting up with this non stop talk shows channels.Done NBC.

If they cancel days of our lives to put this clown on for 5 hours , looks like you will have to watch cbs that will be the only network left, this bozo it not worth no 100 million dollars for 4 years, good grief if katie couric hears this she will be flipping out pulling all her hair out ,shes only getting 20 million, the rat channel is cheap compared to what this jerk is going to get. What a waste of money.Id get into how there are people out of work and loosing there homes and cant eat,but that is another story, these people are not worth all that money,Im glad I dont watch these over paid big heads or any of there stupid shows.

I only wanna see if there is any breaking news then i’m done.I can’t take ll this reruns talk shows. They could have created more good soaps with that kind of money.Does everyone wanna see another wall street guy taking over.Top 1%.They could have employed 100’s on that salary. He is rude and no better then love myself Katie couric.Hope soap fans on nbc have a fit like abc soap fans.Alot have went to Days over loosing there soaps but you can’t tell it by that stupid Neilsen.

I started watching days, when all my children was canceled,I left days 40 years ago when the time changed and they put it on when one life to live was on so I quit watching, didnt have any taping things back then,I think every one should be upset if nbc cancels days ,hopefully it wont happen,5 hours of news and views with that man will be a waste .Why these networks want to alienate the soap fans I will never know ,But like I keep accusing abc/disney of ,It all comes down to the almighty dollar .Its more money in the higher ups pockets.

Not a fan of DAYS, but as a fan of Daytime as a whole, a HUGE OLTL and GH fan, I find this to be devastating news! I miss OLTL and I as other mentioned am worried for the fate of GH. DAYS fans must join the groups and speak loudly! Maybe someone will finally develop an all soap network or chose to air these programs on existing channel.

Luv Matt, but seriously another of the show, I could do without. Added to that even if they do another hour how does that affect Days??? All they have to do is push Days back and we have one less hour of the people’s court. I mean do we really need two. Maybe it is good. Maybe they will break the show in two and show days in between.

People’s Court is a syndicated show.

Today and Days are NBC shows.

If Today gets a fifth hour, it will be on the end of Days. Days’ timeslot is the only one that is available. All the other timeslots belong to the affiliates and they’ll never give them to NBC.

KEEP DAYS.

Oh brother! So when did Brian Frons start working back at NBC?

NO NO NO! Time to grab the pitchforks and go after Lauer! I don’t even want to think about Days going off the air! Days is good now and I’m soooo excited about the EJ and Sami scenes tomorrow! These new writers better write one hell of an EJAMI romance and tune up some of the other stories to increase ratings. The ingredients are there for Days- great characters and great actors- but just needs a little mixing and more consistency (but overall it is good right now!) I’ve watched Days my whole life and I can’t imagine it coming to an end!!!! The Today Show is already on for 4 hours and there’s also 3 other talk shows-rachel ray, nate berkus, and anderson. NBC needs to keep Days!

I already lost Amc &Oltl please dont tell there might be a chance i will loose Days .i am really starting to hate these money hungry network .

My apologies to anyone who watches the fifteen hours of TODAY that are already on the air, but why, God, why? I’d rather be murdered than watch five hours of dreck–seriously, the only things they ever discuss on TODAY are failed celebrity marriages, celebrity tell-all books, and Lady Gaga’s latest outfit.

Another hour of the Today show? Another hour of talk? I can’t stand it. I don’t care how bad some people think Days is (I don’t)–it is much more entertaining than another talk show. Can’t anyone at the networks understand people do not want to listen to anymore talk shows?

If Days continues to suck as it has and continues to showcase bland characters like Dan, Rafe, and Madison while it fails to utilize characters with personality and substance and good story potential such as Jack, I won’t weep to see it go.

However, I can’t understand why anyone wants more of the Today show, and I’m sorry to see the unique genre of soap opera dying. But in many ways, I feel like soap opera is already dead, at least where Days is concerned. Days doesn’t feel like soap opera to me. It feels like a bunch of choppiness, showcasing depth free characters and relationships with no build. I miss those long, angsty love stories in which I could invest—stories that made me wait for a kiss, that let me watch two characters fall in love, that had that wonderful push/pull. I haven’t seen good romance on Days since Jack and Jennifer’s original love story.

I agree with A. Lauer is alright, but he always interrupts people when they are being interviewed. And is another hour of Today or YET ANOTHER talk show really necessary? REALLY?

I am trying to figure out why you guys are getting upset over this! This is a network news that Doctored a tape to start a race war. Why would you beleive anything they say. Calm down it is media hype once again twisting you in knots.

Kay killgore you are right ,What they did is shameful ,I cant believe there is only one guy out the door over this and I also dont understand why a lot of networks arent even reporting it, guess thats because they all do it .Hopefully in time we will know the truth .Is matt laurer reporting about what there network did? I Doubt it.Who will watch 5 hours of this guy? If it is the last news channel left Standing I wouldnt give it 5 seconds of my time.

My guess is that the Today Show would run from 7-12, when the local affiliates would take over for their news at noon. They would want some competition for The View, which owns the 11Am Eastern time slot.

Maybe you are right, but 5 hours of Today? What are these people thinking? I think it is a recipe to guarantee viewers WILL change the channel from NBC to anything else. How LAZY can a network be and still expect people to watch? This is pathetic. And, no, I don’t think this would be any competition for The View. Who wouldn’t change the channel by 11 am?

David – most of us will have changed the channel after 5 min. of Hoda and Kathy Lee. – lol

we just got back the people I like the most,
John Marlena Lucas and Shane is coming soon,
we have news ch for news on 24/7

NO MORE NEWS, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Four hours of Today is two too many already. Just a way to fill air time, without viewers to watch.

NBC wants to save money. Go all radio, again. Save lots of money.

I have watched every single episode of Days for almost its entire run. If NBC ever screwed around with Days I would simply turn off the broadcast networks completely, and just watch cable & movies. Seriously sick of the nets, the reality shows, the news/talk shows, etc.

I barely watch 30 minutes of The Today Show as it is! I like Matt Lauer, but not THAT much!

I don’t think NBC would put Matt in the Days of Our Lives time slot. I think they would make him compete with Katie Couric.

Michael Fairman, do you hate Days of Our Lives? The attitude of your question about Days always seem negative toward the show. When you interview Days cast members, your interviews always seem slanted toward disdain toward the show. Is this intentional? Or do you not realize this is taking place?

Just because AMC and OLTL bit the dust, that does not mean Days will too. I think Days will make 50 years and beyond!

NBC is getting as bad as ABC.Cancel your soap and you’ll see the raft of soap fans.Have these nitwits notice CBS is beating everyone because they are keeping there soaps.Everyone will just go there.I can’t get pass the first hour of Matt Laurer and wouldn’t even watch him if it wasn’t for the boycott against abc.All these stupid talk shows are driving your loyal viewers away.We are sick of them.No one cares about them. There are to many of them.Hes not worth it.Get that in your head before you loose all your veiwers.

This is terrible! Today is boring and not even news, but more like ET (celeb gossip), as someone mentioned above about their broadcasting of Lady Gaga clothing. At least Days has creativity, Today is boring and Kathy/Hoda Lee are SO fake and trashy!

I’m sorry. Did CNN just buy NBC? Do we really need another hour of TODAY? Yawn! I can’t handle the plethora of drivel they produce after the first hour. Love Matt, but please…no more talk shows, news shows, or life-affirmation shows. Oh, and let’s not forget, no more game shows where our soaps used to be. And for Pete’s sake! Leave our DAYS alone!! … I’ll now return you to our regular programing.

now this we lost 4 soaps within the last 4 years and the networks want to cut theothers Days will be the next to go in my opinion even thought the brought Lisa Rinna back to that show and i feel we need to saave the rest

I like Matt Lauer, but, I LOVE Days of Our Lives! If Days gets dropped for another hour of the Today show (even hosted by Matt) I will stop watching ANYTHING broadcasted on NBC!

Really??? More news! Please let us continue having fun in the afternoon hours with Days. I have been watching on and off since I was 3.

Days Of Our Lives

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

Photo: JPI

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Photo: JPI

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Photo: JPI

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

Photo: JPI

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Photo: JPI

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

So, will you be rooting for Wally to take home the gold in this year’s Outstanding Supporting Actor in Daytime Drama Series at the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards on June 7th live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+? Let us know if you remember his nominated scenes from Days of our Lives via the comment section below and how they affected you.

Lisa Rinna Would Be Down to Reprise Her Role of Taylor McBride in ‘Melrose Place’ Reboot

When Lisa Rinna departed her popular role of Billie Reed on Days of our Lives back in 1995, her next major role would be a jump to primetime and the soapy Melrose Place.

In 1996, Lisa was introduced as new character Taylor McBride and stayed with the Fox young adult sudser for three seasons. Now in 2024, with the recent reveal that a Melrose Place revival is the works with Heather Locklear, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton all on board to reprise their signature roles, would Rinna board the project should it come to fruition?

Speaking with PEOPLE, Rinna expressed, “Well, gosh, I’ve heard about it. I haven’t been approached or anything, but I would love to see what Taylor McBride is up to 25 years later. Wouldn’t that be something?”

OG Melrose Place fans know that in story, Taylor moved to the Melrose Place apartment building with her husband Kyle played by Rob Estes. However, Taylor had her eye on Dr. Peter Burns played by former GH star Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco). But, by the time she had moved to the apartment complex, Peter had married tough as nails ad executive, Amanda Woodward, played by Heather Locklear.

Recalling her time on Melrose Place, Rinna added that it, “was one of my greatest and most fun acting experiences, playing Taylor and working with Heather and the whole crew.”  Rinna also noted, “So if they need a Taylor McBride appearance, they know who to call. I’m around.”

The new Melrose Place is in development at CBS Studios. In the premise of the reboot, the Melrose Place residents reunite after the death of one of their friends, “but the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”

Kristian Alfonso Returns to Days of our Lives for Tribute to The Late Bill Hayes

After a few weeks of Days of our Lives fans being upset that Kristian Alfonso (Hope Williams) was not on the first list of initial returns for Doug Williams’ funeral and episodes honoring his portrayer, the late Bill Hayes, comes word that the popular star is back and taping scenes.

Kristian reported to work on the Peacock streaming soap opera on Monday, April 22nd. She shared how important it is for her to be back for this particular return to the show that made her a household name.

“My return is very bittersweet,” Alfonso told TV Insider,  “because it is the end of an era with Bill gone. So to return to Days is very sad. I am appreciative that they came to me to include me in their series of shows honoring Doug and I’m very happy to see everyone, but I’m entering the studio with a heavy heart.”

It was back in 1983 that Kristian first debuted as Doug’s daughter, and now 41 years later looking back at it, and her time with Bill Hayes is very emotional for her.

“I remember my first scenes with him/ He was very loving, very welcoming. That he was very talented and an incredible actor and an icon, that all goes without saying, but my personal relationship and my working relationship with Bill, it was home,” expressed Alfonso. “Doing the scenes with Bill, I felt like I was with my dad because there was so much warmth and reality.”

Alfonso did express some deep regret, in that she had wanted to work with Bill Hayes during her last appearance on the soap back in 2023, but according to the iconic actress, there was something in the works but it never materialized.  “I’m sad that I did not get the opportunity to do the storyline that Ron (Carlivati, head writer) had planned/ It was great; we returned to Salem to reunite with our families and I would have had father/daughter scenes with Billy. What Ron had written was beautiful and emotional and it was a fantastic story. I was 100 percent for it and the fans would have loved it.”

As for if Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope will be back on-screen together anytime soon, Kristian would only say, “What I will say is don’t give up hope.” Doug’s passing and memorial episodes will stream later this year come late November into December.
