RATINGS: General Hospital Has Strong Week: Shows Gains In Total Viewers & Key Demos!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

The ratingsa are out for the week of December 14-18th, and it was ABC’s General Hospital that was the only daytime drama to show gains in total viewers and key demos, while all the other soaps were down.  This was also the week that President Obama’s press conference pre-empt the Friday episode of GH, altogether.

In story for the week, Liz (Rebecca Herbst) was wondering if Jason (Billy Miller) would come back to her after he found out she lied to him for months, Patrick (Jason Thompson), Robert (Tristan Rogers) and Anna (Finola Hughes) found Robin’s (Kimberly McCullough) wherabouts and learned the truth of her captivity, and those were just a few of the plot points that drove the week.

GH added +172,000 total viewers for the week totaling 2,817,000 and remained in#3 spot, and in key women demos was at  #2 in 18-49, 18-34, and #3  in 25-54, while adding viewers in each demo category.

Days of our Lives lost the most viewers for the week – 80,000 and fell back to under 2.5million total viewers.  The NBC soap opera celebrating its 50th season also took a hit in all the key demos in the minus column.  CBS The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful continue to hold steady at #1 and #2 even they saw some small losses for the week.  View the entire ratings picture via SON here.

Numbers are based on Live+Same Day ratings

(Compared to Last Week/Compared to Last Year)

Total Viewers
1. Y&R 4,774,000 (-12,000/-38,000)
2. B&B 3,597,000 (-48,000/-170,000)
3. GH 2,817,000 (+172,000/-100,000)
4. DAYS 2,465,000 (-80,000/+150,000)

D ays is all gloom and doom which is a turn off..Days needs romance and adventue not death of the week…People tuned in to see Robert Scorpio at GH-all sops need a true hero and this soap is sorely lacking one!!!…GH isnt all gloom and doom at the moment and ratings are up-are you listening Days plus fans wanted scrubs reunited but we will see what happens in the weeks ahead now nothing big happening and we loose Scorpio again!!!

Hi Jimh!!!
yes!
Tristan/Scorpio
Kim/Robin
and Jerry can make the MIA fans tune in, who wouldn’t lol
I will really miss Tristan/Scorpio, now that he has returned it’s hard to let him go 🙁
I will miss Patrick, but will see him as Billy, so that is cool
Robin, ehhh, it finally will end.

And– Anna and Scorpio are pure gold!!!
none other as them together in whichever manner of love & adventure..

Except for Sonny and Carly? Ha!
Does anyone know how many times, AND to how many different women Sonny has opened his heart with these words? ” ….the woman I love more than anything else in the world.” Did he avow those very words to Carly before he shot her?

I agree about Days and was glad to see it.. hope it does turn around soon.. but glad the storylines are moving along fast and not predictable. .was nice to see Ciara was taken and kidnapped.. never saw that coming..

Great writing at Days!! Keep up the good work.

Yes, I agree. I was so happy and stunned, really, that little Thomas’ real daddy came through so fast. I was prepared to wait years for the revelation. I did a double take, albeit I knew that the baby would get sick and needing blood or something. Nonetheless, I expected a longer time for it to happen. Is Chad going to repel that news or embrace it?

GH is benefiting from Robin’s brief return and her reconciliation with Patrick. I’m guessing once they leave town and we go back to Sonny 5 days a week the ratings will go back down.

I agree! The Scorpios make up for having to FF 3/4 of it, but the way the show is now, I don’t think I can watch once Robin and Robert are gone. I think Robert is going to be back for a few weeks in January .. that’s what I’m holding on to.

Even since Sonny has returned he has not been on 5 times per week. Elizabeth, Jason, and Sam thats a whole different story, there the ones hogging the screen time

Jimh…your first two lines could have been said of the Fluke story. You’d think other writers would learn.

your right on about DAYS. i’ve heard their killing more people off

I agree about Days, they have Daniel dying this week and coming up it looks like Stefano and/or Victor are going to die.

Daniel died? How can you tell?

@Harry.
In a hurry here….but, as I skimmed through, I just had to comment here, LOL.
There you go, Harry…your sardonic humor, which I love so much, gets me each and every time. I got the sarcasm, Harry. You are one witty genius, my friend. Happy and Healthy New Year.
Poor, poor Daniel!!!!

“Days of Our Funerals” deserves to be cancelled (if the rumors are true). It’s so depressing, just a sad memory of what the show used to be.

Days has not been good. Best thing about the show recently was Ben and he’s gone. The rest of the stories are boring.

GH numbers are not complete and should be qualified.

GH did not air on Friday due to the Presidential news conference so the GH numbers are based on only four days.

Friday is always GH’s lowest rated day, by a lot. That would drag down the total viewer number and the demos.

Friday was the lowest day for the other three soaps. Take out Friday and they all do better on a four day average. Y&R would be up from last week and last year counting only Mon-Thurs like GH.

So based on the same Mon-Thurs average, GH would not be the only soap to make gains and the overall GH numbers would almost certainly be lower with a Friday episode counted in the average.

Not to mention, here in Southern California we had that bomb hoax that shut down ALL of LAUSD schools and some private ones. The news was on all day, though they never had anything new to report. I don’t remember Y&R being on that day nor DOOL.

Then all the other times when other shows do not have complete ratings they should not qualify. The networks are allowed a certian number of episodes per year ot not have count. GH was not on the East Coast on that Friday and in the west coast they aired a repeat. The other shows get the same chance, so stop your GH hatred.

Well Matt, you missed the point. Your answer of networks are allowed a number of episodes a year to not count, whatever, that’s irrelevant and doesn’t really make much sense to the point I was making.

The point is that the spin on this is that GH was the only show to show gains for the week, and the fact is Y&R would as well if it was measured on the same four day average. That’s just a fact and a fair point.

If there are weeks where other shows are preempted and that would help boost their ratings it would be valid to point that out as well, as it occurs, and I would. So please refrain from the hater stuff. It’s silly. I try to have more substantive and mature conversations.

The point is that the other shows get the same spin, regardless it was a good week for GH of the 4 episodes that aired. You have no idea what numbers the show would have done that is pure speculation on your part. You have an agenda against GH, you were on another board stating the same crap. When someone shot you down there you tried to blow it off. Again you would only be speculating if GH had a 5th day what there number would have been. We get it you don’t like the show, but anytime something good is said about it you try to turn into a negative, it gets old and boring, and its far from mature on your part.

No Matt, you do miss the point and your explanations are off point.

First, in my original post, I simply stated that Friday is always the lowest rated day on GH and that would drag the numbers down. That is a valid point, you may not like it, but it is valid.

The larger point, aside from whether GH numbers would be lower, now follow me here, is that Y&R would be up if it was only based on the four days that GH was. That is also a fact and means that the spin for GH isn’t really accurate or really the spin against Y&R is somewhat unfair. That is not hate or an agenda, it is a rational and intelligent point. It is actually a positive argument for Y&R.

Now the larger point here is that you feel the need to make this a personal discussion, to call me out, use the terms hate, agenda, troll me, whatever. I like to just post my thoughts on the show not on other posters who I don’t know. If running interference on social media for GH, attacking people individually, thinking you are somehow devaluing their comments by doing so, is something you just like to do or if it is your job, so be it.

I think I have made valid points based on the numbers and circumstances, and I think people can see that. Whether they are posted by someone who as you claim “hates GH” would be irrelevant anyway and I think where you try to call out some agenda on my part, you have exposed yours quite clearly.

No one is trolling oyu, I didn’t attack you, i stated the facts based on posts you tend to make. If you don’t like it get a thicker skin/ I far from trolled you, but as usual you want to play victim to further your agenda. The ratings went up end of story, I bet if they went down and people said oh if they had been on that additional day yo would be shooting them down, because its only when someone has your same opinions that its ok to state them, then you try to bully others from stating theirs

I want to stress that the ratings went up because of the return of the Scorpios. It would be nice if they were afforded longer scenes.
I cannot fathom why TPTB do not note the spike in ratings when The Scorpios (including Mac) are featured and make a connection between cause and effect.
The ratings plunge when Nina, Franco, Ava Morgan and Kiki are featured and yet, they are constantly inserted into the drama fold whenever rating boasting characters like Robin, Mac and Robert Scorpio make an appearance.
The numbers don’t lie

I love Michelle and Roger but their characters/stories suck!

I totally agree with both your points AJQ and Harry. Many viewers (I included) tuned in last week to see the return of the beloved Robert Scorpio and the reunion and coming HEA of Scrubs. That said, I have no interest in seeing (in order of the repulsion that give me) Franco, Nina, Ava, Kiki and Morgan as the Scrubs story wraps up. If we could get rid of the Cartini four I would tolerate Morgan as a legacy character.

Have to also say I am perplexed that Matt talks about the other shows getting the same opportunity to air a repeat if GH is pre-empted. How so, when the other shows all air before GH – with production teams that aren’t necessarily aware that GH isn’t going to air later. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Elizabeth, the ratings systems allow the networks to not count a certain number of episodes per year. Other shows choose to do this when they are full day preemptions, or a holiday etc. However once those are used up they cannot do so. There were other weeks where this worked to the advantage of the other shows. It has nothing to do with the other shows airing a repeat, it has to do with the other shows being allowed to not count the rating for a particular day. As I said they can do this a certain times per year, has nothing to do with airing a repeat.

Well, I tuned in that week specifically to see Robert, I knew he was coming back that week, so I started watching GH again that week to see him….Now Robert is MIA ugh and I’m pissed, here hoping he’s back on the screen soon…How can I get attached to other characters if the one I’m watching the show for (Robert) is barely on and when he’s on it’s VERY short scenes?.

I know, they bait the audience with Robert, then hope we’ll fall in love with the other characters. But there’s no real love or romance, so what’s to love?

Then they cut out a really sweet and poignant scene which transpired between Robert and Anna so creepy Ava and disgusting Paul could have more air time.

Harry, i find Paul to be so slimy and Ava with her weird mouth movements drive me crazy. Id be happy if both left! Hate that we got 2 minutes of Robert & Anna; guess GH didnt want us too excited since Tristan was leaving again! Also, didnt Felicia goto Paris to watch Emma? So, why wasnt she invited over?

Harry, it makes me so mad they cut out a Robert&Anna scene so we could have more Ava&Paul. WHO is watching for THEM?! I think these ratings make it pretty obvious people are tuning in for the Scorpios. Maybe tiic will get a clue.

I actually started off with excitement when Paul was introduced, I loved the actor when he was on Desperate Housewives and thought there was all sorts of interesting story potential with him and Tracy. Instead he had to become YET another criminal within the mob, who nonsensically somehow and someway became the DA in town (what was that, the third DA in the course of four months’ time? Yeah, THAT makes sense.)

And the story with Ava is just tawdry and uninteresting. So, yeah, no reason to stick around for that.

It was a good time for GH numbers to advance..
with-
Tristan returning
Robin returning
Patrick’s exit story
that makes those who dropped out to tune in to see Patrick and Robin one last time and say ”goodbye….
I expected the rise, of course..

was not surprised GH was up. it featured the return of Robin and Robert. looks like people’s tuning in to see Patrick’s final episodes. also GH had only 4 episodes to be counted, and Friday is usually always their lowest rated day. Y&R still continues to be a strong number 1,they probably would of been up for the week if not for the news conference. DAYS is way too dark, really depressing. they got a temporarily bounce for the 50th,now their back down again. the soap i’ve really been losing interest in is B&B,the quality has really gone down this fall. lots of storyline is being recycled. B&B is so boring right now

It could really go either way, but I personally think Days will get some kind of renewal, although I’d be very surprised if it’s for two years. It barely squeaked a two year renewal in last time largely because of the 50th upcoming. Supposedly, some execs at NBC wanted to dump the show and Sony did some sweet talking. Honestly, I just don’t see the show as being any better right now. One murder after another. That’s not a soap opera, that’s a formula for cancellation. Fans/viewers will only take so much of that, and the ones raving about how great the show is are the ones whose faves are still on there. Kill one of them off and see how quick their opinion changes. I’m not sure how these ratings can be spun positively. If vet returns and this fast-paced action hasn’t raised the numbers at this point, what will they do when they actually have to write something ongoing?

Personally, I am liking DAYS most right now but only if you take Sam and Jason out of the GH equation. CBS shows bore the crap out of me!

But will probably start watching Y&R now that JT is headed that way.

I don’t think I will watch it…. JT is a great actor, but I will not watch the show just because he is joining…besides Steve Burton is there too, and I am NOT a fan of his!

Expect NBC to announce Days is cancelled in January.

I wouldn’t be surprised. I would be sad though, especially for the cast and crew. Days is the only soap left that I like and I have no desire to watch the other three.

Ken Corday really dropped the ball when EJ, Sami, Kristen and Nick left. We were stuck with bad stories like Serena and the elephant, and JJ and Eve. Ken waited about a year before he decided “hey, the anniversary is coming up. Now let’s get the show interesting again.”

Ah, that elephant idiocy…..still sticks to the craw. What a useless, stupid storyline….complete waste of time. I agree with your comment, blake.

@Blake

I really think your post speaks volumes

I truly place most of the blame… directly on Ken Corday shoulders… for being so careless and irresponsible

which is further proof… the show… for a year plus… was running on empty, no direction… unmanned

how could he have let it go that long?

case in point?!?!

Chandler Massey last airdate; December 31, 2013
both EJ and Sami exited Salem, onscreen; October, 2014.. which would make them exiting as early as April, 2014…

for all of 2014; DAYS floundered

ie: year, 2015… let’s rebound and start airing with new production value(s) August 17, 2015… bearing in mind the 6 month ahead of schedule.

holding out hope that an announcement is made soon… “renew”

Yeah CeeCee, bless Melissa Archer’s heart. She will have the elephant story attached to her from now on. I thought she deserved much better than that, but all of the stories at that time were horrid.

Exactly, blake. I was so excited when Melissa walked on the Days’ stage. I vehemently protested about the demeaning role ‘they’ attached to her name; as it was done to Kassie D.
I surely hope this show will go on forever, I love it that much. I would be very disappointed to think otherwise. Happy New Year.

Thank you so much CeeCee, you also!

Really?

If that happens, expect me to turn…4ever BITTER!

I’m still holding on to the hope… that the 3 networks… wouldn’t not go without one serial… to beacon our daytime experience

I just can’t imagine… yet… if they go this route… it’s like putting a nail on all that is daytime

when its clear… that so many shows in all the tv medium have little to ‘NO” shelf life

keep the one constant blazing… Life in Salem! Days of OUR Lives

Sadly, it will only take one network to pulled the plug on their remaining soap to have all them follow suit. Right now each network is keeping the status quo, but if NBC does cancel Days, then they can be claim the title of the network that killed the daytime drama.

I agree, it would be great if Days was renewed even if it was for a year. They seem to be really trying to keep viewers, unlike this time last year.

GOOD NEWS…..GOOD SOAP ALL WEEK……AND DO NOT FORGET BILLY MILLER !

Love General Hospital..hard to believe they have 2 million less viewers then Y&R…Try to watch Y&R “boring”. Maybe put GH back on at 3:00. I started watching after school back in the 70’s. Miss Steve Burton, his character Dylan is not interesting. I tried.

I’m happy for GH. ALL the Scorpios including Mac should have gotten a big Christmas bonus!

I totally agree, Timm.

GH, was AWESOME that week.. It was must See TV lol 🙂

If yall notice Days highest rates day was Monday when Hope rescue Ciara and it was full when suspense, adventure , and mystery. Way higher than the nxt episode which focus on Couples. I notice a pattern , Dec 7-11 they gain +81,000 and there was action that week and dr . malcom die. Folks we can alwalways get we want from the writers. We wanted New ones on Days after complaing and now some of want New ones again. I see another pattern.

Folks sure were sure not watching the show when there romance and love in 2014. Days was actually up 150,000 from last year.

Maybe the reason no one was watching the “romance” stories is because what passes for romance on soaps nowadays is pathetic. I don’t know one soap left that writes decent romance stories anymore– if done properly romance stories could be as big of draw as the murder of the week. However neither the powers that be or viewers with the attention span of a gnat has the patience that epic love stories require, so all we get are quick hook ups between characters that no one cares about– bedroom scenes aren’t romance–which is why I turned out.

I will agree. What I was refering to White sell and Tonkin writing it was focus most on lust and love. Elephant statues Lol

Mary, you said it all! I guess I’m just another “annoying ’80s fan” who remembers the supercouples of old and we got to see every little moment of their falling in love, and by the time they finally kissed – oh my! We were doing cartwheels around the living room! We don’t get that from soaps anymore because tiic think their audience wants “instant gratification”. And maybe they’re right. But it’s ruining soaps.

Thank you, Mary. Finally someone who sees romance as it is meant to be seen or imagined. Romance, as it is purported/depicted on soaps; TV or cinema, in general, is a roll in the hay. Sleeping around and sharing partners. I am not from the 70’s or 80’s soaps, but I can appreciate true romance. As I said previously, romance never gets old/passe’. Sadly, this is what we are given. This is what younger people want? I don’t think so! It is the fare that is offered, therefore, it is all that youth sees. Whatever the younger generation is exposed to, that is exactly what they expect to see and eventually demand. Too bad! Perhaps, I sound a bit cynical? Lol. Sorry!
Happy New Year, Mary.

What romance and love are you talking about because I don’t remember any good storylines happening last year. Brady & Melanie? Eric & can’t even remember her name anymore, played by Melissa Archer? No couples with chemistry, that’s for sure

I agree that it is impressive that Days is up 150K from last year.

Loving the return of Mac Scorpio. Wouldn’t it be great if Robert joined Mac and Anna to go after Paul and Carlos? Can we please, please see Felicia? If GH wants to bring the romance, why not show us more of a happy Mac and Felicia while Lulu and Dante implode? Speaking of which, I hate to root for a bad guy, but am kind of hoping Johnny succeeds in running Valerie out of town. Like the actress a lot, but the character has run her course, it seems to me.

@Melissa…..I concur that a more permanent return for Robert would be most welcome! If one blinked, they most likely would have missed him during his far-too-brief reappearance in Paris. Alas, I must admit I truly do not miss Felicia one iota, but it was very good indeed to see Mac back in the investigative saddle with Anna. ‘Twas a lovely change from his most recent previous antics where he was either slinging gin and ribs or humiliating himself with “Mr. Marbles!” Let’s just say his latest “spy stint” with Ms. Devane was refreshing, to say the least, and went a long way toward restoring the former Commissioner Scorpio’s manhood, which he sadly lost during the Cartini regime! (Time to bring him back to his old job, too, as an interim replacement for the highly-ineffectual Jordan….the PCPD becomes more of a laughing stock with each passing day with its ridiculous cast of clueless Keystone Kops!)

Great point about Mac not only being brought back, but being brought back in a role befitting him. I love that he is using his investigative skills again.

How I wish the Scorpios – ALL the Scorpios – could be front-and-center again on GH. I really cannot stand any more of the mobsters, they’ve worn out their welcome.

Oh, Maddiehayes, I completely agree with you. What really makes me sick is that the mobsters seem to now be what the show is calling their main family. Did you catch the christmas episode? It all took place at Scummy’s, sorry Sonny’s, with all of them there celebrating, as is Sonny didn’t murder AJ and Carly didn’t cover it up. Can we please have some decent characters on this show?!?

@maddiehayes….Please forgive me, my “marvelous maddiehayes!” When I typed my holiday greetings list of favorite MF posters, I skipped over your name! I had it scribbled down on a sheet of paper along with the others, but when I actually posted it wasn’t included. MY BAD! So, a belated Merry Christmas—and at least a timely Happy New Year—to you!!! Oh, and I second your motion on the Scorpios!!!!

I’m wondering why they haven’t made more of the Scorpio’s past w/Paul Hornsby. Back when Mac was introduced, he was actually hired by Paul Hornsby to cause trouble for his brother, Robert, who was police commissioner at the time. They have all these characters back on the canvas. But, it’s not being mined for the layers of history & complexity it could bring. The potential to build an audience with flashbacks of the real actors are there, and to keep a popular character like Robert for more than just dressing up as Father Christmas. But, it’s all being wasted for talky, talky scenes of characters rehashing useless exposition. Did Sam & Patrick really required 20 minutes to recap what they have acted out for the past 2 weeks? GEEZ!

Thank you Shay – Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too! 🙂

Well Justin, it really does seem like GH is trying to go back to the days of Guza. They just don’t get it. Ratings went UP when Carlivati was at the helm, bringing back fan faves. But RC’s insistence on pushing his own creations at the expense of the vets fans loved wrecked the show. And this Jasam/Liason war he restarted has been poorly engineered. Jason should have had a strong connection to both women. His sudden interest in Sam rings false, considering how very much in love he was with Elizabeth all year. And he should have had a stronger pull to the Quartermaines. Now it’s all about Sonny and Carly again. I’ll be so disappointed if he goes back to that life.

CBS is very unhappy with B&B’s ratings. There are rumblings CBS will pull the plug, but B&B could continue on the web because of it’s international appeal. Some are saying a ‘The Talk’ 30 minute spin-off will take B&B’s place.

I don’t think CBS will cancel either soap anytime soon. I am not sure any of the remaining soaps will be canned just yet. Not that I would be surprised if one were, but with the bad luck ABC is having replacing their canned soaps, I am thinking they may wait a year or two.

Not before “Deaths of Our Lives”!!!

Just to be clear…for anyone not sure…DAYS is on NBC. B&B is on CBS. The decisions to renew and cancel programs are made by people within their own network. Networks can and often have canceled programs with higher ratings than competing networks programs…including soaps.

My with is for all the soaps to remain. Happy New Year, Matthew!

*my wish

General Hospital always has a story going. I feel like I care, if only a little bit, for every character. The cast is always perfect and well acted even if the stories sometimes come off short. The rescue of Robin. The romance of Patrick and Robin is sincere. There is reality to it. Even though they won’t be around. Anna Devane is stunning in every performance. The Quartermaines are both riveting and hilarious to watch. More Monica and Tracy. I love Jason and Sam and even pathetic little Liz. Nicolas and Hayden are gold together. I love how the story just goes on without a hitch. Even those who hate Sonny and Carly which I will never understand. I love those two together and I love the family of those two. Morgan, Michael, Dante and all the rest. The actors for the most part stay the same and there aren’t the over the top stories that DAYS always has. DAYS pulls stunts to get viewers. This current stunt of bringing back 80’s couples is so beyond the pale boring and stupid. Patch and Kayla? Seriously??? They are so beyond stupid together and that wretched actress playing Ava like a poor woman’s portrayal of Alexis Carrington from Dynasty. The young batch of actors playing Ciara, Chase, Joey and the austistic one…who I can not even remember the name of. The only one with a shred of acting skill is Joey. And his is limited. The stories are inane and can they kill any other people off? I mean seriously what a way to reduce cast. And what they did to the gay characters on the show is beyond disgusting. I am surprised they didn’t have Stefano use HIV infected needles to knock them off. What is wrong with DAYS is that they are so busy living in the past they can’t see what a sham of a show they have now. The characters worth investing in they give minimal time to. How many times can we be subjected to John Black’s inane desire to discover who he is. Get over it JOHN…you’ll meet your maker before you discover why you are the way you are. Marlena is a snooze. Someone get the devil back since they are rehashing old stories over and over.

Is that B& B does over and over again. You know I have decided not comment on this website. These site is tearing down a show, character, actor , and cry foul when it’s cancel. It just shows you can’t please everybody.

I have to admit I am enjoying the Corinthos family unit, largely because the stories are focused on family and not Sonny’s mob activities. Although I have never really bought how quickly and decisively Michael forgave Sonny for killing AJ. That bothers me a lot, but at least Michael is maintaining his ties to the Quatermaines and it’s no longer and either/or situation.

The Patrick-Robin reunion really fell flat for me. It feels more like two old friends getting back together than beloved spouses. Where’s the passion? Why is Robin dressed in a dreary denim shirt on New Year’s Eve? And why in the world would Emma be off on sleepover just after her Mom reappeared after a multi-year absence?

Am really curious about how they are going to write them out of town. It will take some skillful storytelling to explain why the entire family is leaving behind everyone they love just as Robin has returned home.

Have only been watching bits and pieces of Days because I do not like all the deaths and muders. I have avoided watching those, but yesterday I saw a little more of the show, and I like the Brady/Theresa romance, Belle was good, and I have to say I enjoyed the fashion show (and I am not much of a fashionista). If Days keeps up romance and other types of mystery and intrigue without murders and deaths ratings may pick up. Who wants to see deaths and murders over and over again? I thought the show was good yesterday.

I just want to add – I liked many others on yesterday as well – I still like seeing Kayla and Patch, Chad is good (interesting to see how the actor I think it is Billy has really developed in the role), Nicole and Kate are always great, etc.

Days has killed to many of there fan favorites starting with Will Horton. Will was a character fans watched grow up and loved. The Wilson story line brought Days new fans and killing him killed the new fans interest in the show. Viewers that started watching after AMC and OLTL were canceled are lost with the new/returned characters since they don’t know the characters history in Salem. The death of main characters on the show and general gloom as a result are turning off viewers. Bringing back Bo just to have him die was upsetting to old time viewers who loved the character. Fix Days Mr. Corday, Bring back Will and Sonny, bring back romance, stop the deaths, stop shooting the show so far in advance so you can fix story lines using the feedback from fans.

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

Lisa Rinna Would Be Down to Reprise Her Role of Taylor McBride in ‘Melrose Place’ Reboot

When Lisa Rinna departed her popular role of Billie Reed on Days of our Lives back in 1995, her next major role would be a jump to primetime and the soapy Melrose Place.

In 1996, Lisa was introduced as new character Taylor McBride and stayed with the Fox young adult sudser for three seasons. Now in 2024, with the recent reveal that a Melrose Place revival is the works with Heather Locklear, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton all on board to reprise their signature roles, would Rinna board the project should it come to fruition?

Speaking with PEOPLE, Rinna expressed, “Well, gosh, I’ve heard about it. I haven’t been approached or anything, but I would love to see what Taylor McBride is up to 25 years later. Wouldn’t that be something?”

Photo: FOX

OG Melrose Place fans know that in story, Taylor moved to the Melrose Place apartment building with her husband Kyle played by Rob Estes. However, Taylor had her eye on Dr. Peter Burns played by former GH star Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco). But, by the time she had moved to the apartment complex, Peter had married tough as nails ad executive, Amanda Woodward, played by Heather Locklear.

Recalling her time on Melrose Place, Rinna added that it, “was one of my greatest and most fun acting experiences, playing Taylor and working with Heather and the whole crew.”  Rinna also noted, “So if they need a Taylor McBride appearance, they know who to call. I’m around.”

The new Melrose Place is in development at CBS Studios. In the premise of the reboot, the Melrose Place residents reunite after the death of one of their friends, “but the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”

Kristian Alfonso Returns to Days of our Lives for Tribute to The Late Bill Hayes

After a few weeks of Days of our Lives fans being upset that Kristian Alfonso (Hope Williams) was not on the first list of initial returns for Doug Williams’ funeral and episodes honoring his portrayer, the late Bill Hayes, comes word that the popular star is back and taping scenes.

Kristian reported to work on the Peacock streaming soap opera on Monday, April 22nd. She shared how important it is for her to be back for this particular return to the show that made her a household name.

“My return is very bittersweet,” Alfonso told TV Insider,  “because it is the end of an era with Bill gone. So to return to Days is very sad. I am appreciative that they came to me to include me in their series of shows honoring Doug and I’m very happy to see everyone, but I’m entering the studio with a heavy heart.”

It was back in 1983 that Kristian first debuted as Doug’s daughter, and now 41 years later looking back at it, and her time with Bill Hayes is very emotional for her.

“I remember my first scenes with him/ He was very loving, very welcoming. That he was very talented and an incredible actor and an icon, that all goes without saying, but my personal relationship and my working relationship with Bill, it was home,” expressed Alfonso. “Doing the scenes with Bill, I felt like I was with my dad because there was so much warmth and reality.”

Photo: JPI

Alfonso did express some deep regret, in that she had wanted to work with Bill Hayes during her last appearance on the soap back in 2023, but according to the iconic actress, there was something in the works but it never materialized.  “I’m sad that I did not get the opportunity to do the storyline that Ron (Carlivati, head writer) had planned/ It was great; we returned to Salem to reunite with our families and I would have had father/daughter scenes with Billy. What Ron had written was beautiful and emotional and it was a fantastic story. I was 100 percent for it and the fans would have loved it.”

As for if Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope will be back on-screen together anytime soon, Kristian would only say, “What I will say is don’t give up hope.” Doug’s passing and memorial episodes will stream later this year come late November into December.

So, are you happy to learn that Kristian Alfonso is back taping episodes surrounding Doug’s memorial episodes? Comment below.
