RATINGS: Not a Good Week for Y&R! Ties All-Time Low in Key Female Demo!

The ratings are out for the week of July 30th to August 3rd, and while Days of our Lives was on break due to NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics, the other three network daytime dramas aired.  And in the ratings period, The Young and the Restless seemed to falter the most.  While still wait out in front as the number one daytime drama, the show lost significant amount of viewers in all the key demographic categories.  Of particular note was women 18-49.  Y&R tied an all-time low for itself for the demo’s rating share and lost viewers in the 18-49 female and males 18 and up.

However, Y&R did not lose the most total viewers for the week, that went to General Hospital which lost another -168,000 eyeballs, while showing a small gain in viewers in the key 18-49 female demo. The only show to gain viewers for the week as The Bold and the Beautiful remaining in the second spot, adding +41,000 viewers and still coming in at 3 million plus total viewers every week.  View the entire ratings courtesy of Soap Opera Network here!

So soapers, time to put on your armchair quarterback Soap Opera Executive Programming hat! While we all know Y&R just made a seismic shift at the top level of the creative department of the show with Maria Arena Bell out and Jill Farren Phelps and Josh Griffith in, what suggestions do you have to make Y&R a show that you continue to tune-in to everyday? What is working on B&B for you, as it continues to gain viewers mostly each week?  And, what should be done to GH to pull it out of any potential ratings slides, even though as many of stated that by all appearances it’s firing on all cylinders right now?  Could Good Afternoon America be hurting it, but once Katie Couric’s new talk show debuts in September and GH switches to its new time slot, help the ratings for the lone ABC soap?  Let us know your thoughts!

Do you have the stats in?

have to take into consideration that everytime the Olympics are on daytime ratings fall across the board. The good thing to point out while yes their ratings all fell, they did a heck of a lot better than the chew and gaa! 🙂
makes me a happy camper 🙂

GH is still too dark and seems to be getting darker. There is desperate need for some lightness. The Scully mess is drowning this show, it is just awful.

And the whole Liason/McBam quadrangle just comes across as forced.

Production values are awesome, but I do get that the eyeballs still do not want to return.

Do something. Change the energy. The show is so lethargic. Drop the reality show garbage. Have Nikki drink her way out her marriage with Jack. Where’s Jill? Where’s some ferocious passionate fighting? GH tightened up that ship and only let the best stay. YR needs a little house cleaning. Genie Francis was great. She should go head to head with Jill or something.

Last week? Painful to watch that lame wedding. I don’t know, it’s like watching some la de da 50s pleasantry. Get it moving.

Give Harmony some dark secret to expose, don’t waste that talent.

We some old time Jill stealing Phillip from Katherine fuled energy.

The show needs to take note from The hit show Revenge and the new Dallas. This la la crap with Adam and snooze con artist Chelsea and there child like giggles is sickening dare I say worst then Liam/Hope/Steffy I thought nothing could be worse. Sharon needs to come back stronger than ever our favorite character has been massacred to death and humiliated. Boy what did Sharon Case do to Maria Arena Bell to deserve this. Im still loyal to Sharon even know I don’t like her attitude and this disgusting Victor thing .I admired the Ol mighty and powerful Victor Newman but NOT any more. I see him light a dirty old man who is pinning away feeling sorry for himself over a toxic drunk like Nikki sorry but that ship has sailed. I loved Vic better with Ashley back in the day and then again with Sabrinia. LOVED SABRINA. Sharon needs a HOT young buisness man to sweep her off her feet and Adam to be sniffing after her. Did I mention how I can’t stomach Chelsea. So fake. No passion. The soap lacks passion. Nick is a damn fool wear is the mans balls??? Do I dare get into the WAY over exposed Phyllis. YUCK The women needs to sit in time out in a sound proof cell. So sick of her and her lies and her past. BORING! Boy this show has no shock mystery factor at all. Look at the botch job on Diane Jenkins murder OY VEY so Nikki got drunk and hit and killed Diane mystery solved the end. Daisy is young and the new and improved Phyllis of today. i have watched the show since June 1978. Out with the old or at least keep them in the back round for Christmas dinner.they could have done so much with the Ricky murder but it lacks imagination to say the least. OK we LOVED Doug Davidson’s performance and we all wanted to give him and Peter Porte a Emmy BUT now we want to take it away. We know he is sad but knock it off dude. Michael and Ronan have become a disappointment. This is a FBI agent and a DA??? Come on!!! Weak !!! They giving special treatment to psycho Phyllis put want to burn Paul at the stake!!! Okay sorry but heather and Daniel UMMMM NO!!! OMG NO!!! Do I need to say more. FOR GOD SAKES BRING BACK VICTORIA ROWELL !!! Do they want to sky rocket this show to #1 this is how you start!!!! Chloe boring bring Chance back for her or fire her. Eden waist of time and money. Summer and Fen not yet were not ready. We need action mystery romance and sweaty forbidden lust.

Oh, but Paul’s scenes were amazing. That’s acting. He’s so handsome.

Well there is no way that, hypothetically should KATIE be an overnight success, that it will help GH on the WEST coast considering DR OZ will be following it.

I think the bad ratings for Y&R has to do with all the behind-the-scenes drama that went on. It is like the stock market. People probably tuned out because of it.

I don’t watch B&B, but I do see the promos as I fast-forward the commercials for Y&R. Every week it is the same – Liam, Hope & Steffy unless they throw in Bill & Katie for a change. I guess the younger kids (demographic) likes this tug-of-war and bedhopping with this triangle. It seems boring to me from all the comments I read about it and the other soap fans that complain about it. Maybe we on the message boards are truly the minority and nobody gives a flying fig what we think or what we want to watch?

As a 30+ year viewer of “Y & R” (been watching since Summer 1981), I suggest the following:

1) Stop/un-do the needless SORAS’ing of characters – Noah, Summer, Fenmore and now Kyle Jenkins have been aged to the point where MAB has messed up the show’s timelines, previous storylines and family histories. I’d like to see the original child actors return to their roles at the proper ages. The worst screw-up was the SORAS’ing of Kyle Jenkins – now being portrayed by a kid with the acting depth of a totem pole – Blake Hood needs to go!!

2) Un-do MAB’s decimation of core families: she killed off all the Carltons – The Abbott clan is now just Jack & Billy – the Newmans are divided as usual and the Fisher/Baldwin clan are now a joke unto themselves!! Josh Griffith needs to bring these families front and center again and the only way to do that is to…

3) Get rid of nearly every yawn-inducing character Maria Arena Bell and her co-hacks Scott Hamner & Hogan Sheffer have created since their reign of terror started in 2008. The following characters need to go and soon:

Tucker
Sofia
Yolanda/Harmony
Sarge
Avery
Anita (Ugh!)
Chelsea
Eden (yes, her too!)
Genevieve
Kyle
Ronan (could have been a good character, but MAB and her hacks made him a jerk!)

NOT ONE of these characters belongs in GC – they are nothing but cliches and carriers to perpetuate bad plot-driven material. Perhaps Josh Griffith can come up with a sweeping umbrella story to dispatch these useless, one-note characters.

4) New sets/places that should be seen in GC – I’ve grown very tired of that damn G.C.A.C. and the coffee house!! I am not familiar with Jill Farren Phelps’ work, but she does has the Emmy awards to prove she can do a capable job – I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt and wait until her and Josh’s version of “Y & R” premieres before I make any assessments.

and finally:

5) GET RID OF ANY TRACES OF THAT HORRID WRETCHED CHARACTER KNOWN AS DAISY CARTER – THE WORST CHARACTER THAT EVER APPEARED ON “Y & R”!! Sorry, but this long-time viewer never, ever bought for a second that she and her dimbulb brother Ryder Callahan were the demon spawn of Sheila Carter and Tom Fisher – NEVER!!

Okay everything what Bart say’s including my suggestion to cut back on Phyllis A LOT!!! and #1 on the list bring back Victor Rowell we need a entire Winters family again, NOT this Harmony not her son I have watched this show since 1978 and for the life of me I can’t ever remember this guys name, Ronan like I said in my post I had huge expectations for him and he failed big time what a sorry excuse for a FBI agent was he the same secrete service in the news with the call girls. Please him tipping off crazy Phyllis how unprofesstional. Daisy could of been the new an improved next Phyllis she does have only an icon of the most famous villian in daytime history, But they screwed it up. Where is Ericia Love Joy aka Mary and her younger sister Diana ??? I think having Phyllis as Shelia Carter was the biggest joke and then with sister Smith of Shelia with Laurens face OMG who thought of that junk. You can’t replace Kimberly Brown

with B&B cut way way way back on Steh/liam/Hope if there gonna brake them up stop having them talk about who is gonna bed Liam and someone do it already!!!They opened the door for a same sex couple they need both shows to have same sex young couples like ATWT but not make it some big storyline like it’s a OMG your gay thing like on B&B , Okay so they are gay so now let’s see them live have a storyline work don’t but them on display like a circus act. i miss the day’s we had other characters on B&B Id like to see a fashion war with the Forresters vs Spectra. like when Sally was around R.I.P she was larger then life. Thorne and Macy were fantastic.Amber Moore has to be my all time favorite and they go and fire her and put wimpy Caroline in there. Oh Gosh were is the old soap day’s? Please get rid of Stephanie’s silly joker sister she is just nut’s. give Taylor a life. My God the women has ben waiting for Ridge for 25 years to be her’s Not happening. I thought they were supposed to have Taylor find out she had a son with the Prince from years ago what gives?

GH has got to advertise as it did before yrs., ago. When they have new accitement to air people need to know………..Advertise on outher cable networks like most shows do. It is never seen anytime anywhere. Believe it or not some drfiters thought GH was cancelled along time ago. Cable and mutiple channels and the Olympics is killing daytime right now. Dallas advertises everywhere……same genre!

The Y&R ratings are atrocious. MAB’s firing was well justified & she was delusional to think her stories would bring ratings.

JG & JFP need to clean house of Gen, Tucker, YoHarm, Sarge, Anita, Glo, Jeff & Daisy. Y&R needs to get back to the core families (Newmans, Abbots, Winters,,,etc) & business stories instead of using useless newbies. 🙂

WOW!! the ratings for Cartini’s OLTL reboot… I mean “GH” are down again. No suprise there since One Lifer’s are used more than the actual GH cast.

If the current GH shows are demonstrating it is “firing on all cylinders”, GH has no chance. If this is as good as it gets for the show, it will continue to bleed viewers. I am honestly so tired of hating this show, but it’s done nothing to make me think otherwise.

YR is just in shambles right now.

I can’t wait for DOOL to come back! I was happy for the break, but now I want my soap back on the tubes.

I cant wait for DOOL either and go EJAMI!!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t mean to be insulting but if B&B gained viewers I really do question the brains of soap viewers. That is why I think this is a bogus poll!!!! No one in their right mind can think baseing an entire soap on three characters who sorry are just awful could be pulling in viewers.

You are so right on the money, kay/kay. The entire soap is and has been Steffy, LIam and Hope. It’s exhausting. It took forever for them to get together and get married, only to find out about Liam’s “infidelity” on their wedding day. YAWN!!!! C’mon, there’s more to this soap than these three kids. Totally under utilizing Don Diamont, not to mention some of the older actors on the show. Maybe once the school year starts up they will shift storyline to include some of the more mature characters. PLEASE!!!

HERE HERE RE: B&B STEF/LIAM?HOPE DOUBLE YAWN !!! COMING FROM A @@ YEAR B&B FOLLOWER> HEAR US BRADLEY BELL> WITH BOTH EARS!!!! THANKS 🙂

The reason BB gets more viewers is because of attention span..
It is much easier to watch a 30 minute soap, time wise, than an hour show..
The soap fans who still watch doing real time (not via the net etc) do not have that hour to spend watching any longer as they once did in an era past…

Good point. I never thought of that (30 minute format). Maybe the remaining soaps should go back to the 30 minute format the way they used to be way back when.

I have been suggesting 30 min for years. They should have done that with AMC and OLTL. It would focus on the important characters and would be easier to distribute internationally, like B and B.

General Hospital ” lost another -168,000 ” I have a hard time believing these numbers–

Where do I start with y &r. Chelsea and Adam suck. Sharons character hss been ruined and she is a VET. Melissa Claire Egan is not and her character is mde into a Stepford Wife which she aont. MAB should finally see why she was let go.

sorry supposed to say aint. bad spelling there.

I have a hard time interpreting this when Michael refers to the number of eyeballs viewing the shows. Most of us have two eyeballs. Should we halve the number then? Does he mean pairs of eyeballs? I realize you are trying to be snappy, Michael, but the result is that you are making it either confusing or inaccurate.

It is summer. People are on vacation. The next two weeks I will not be viewing because I will be out of town and I don’t record when I am gone because I will never have time to view them, even with fast forward. That means nothing in the long run. The test will be when summer is over.

I’ve always wondered about the ratings also. Are the numbers the amount of people watching per day or a total for the week? The numbers always seem low to me if it’s for the week. SOrry if this is a dumb question!!

I hate to see Ronn Moss go from Band B but this show repeats and repeats and that’s why I won’t watch anymore.
As for Y&R I have watched for 34 years and can’t believe what I’m now seeing. Please quit playing musical chairs with marriage! We don’t marry everyone we fall for and that fast. Phyllis is allowed too much for too long don’t even believe Summer is Nick’s, never have. Sharon Case is a great actress, give her the role she deserves, not this bimbo of late. Daniel Goddard belongs out front. let him lead it’s time!

I am most discruntled against the Y&R. I really hope they will bring back reality into the show. I have been watching this soap with interest but everything went wrong when Sharon slept with Adam when she was about to marry nick; the storyline became a nightmare for sharon. She was sweet, kind hearted admirable, though weak she was the perfect woman for nick; then from nowhere this victor madness. For this shoe to succeed the following must be done immediately
1. Restore sharon case. Bring out a medical explanation to her actions. Make her a firm and powerful woman on her own right not through the newmans or abbotts. Bring in a new storyline for her. No one currently in the show that will start a real romance and love phase just like Nick and sharon back in the 1990s-2005. Make Noah and Fait consistent in her life and that of this new romance. Give her happiness for once. Make her forget about nick cheating on her with phyllis for that is the source of all troubles. Make embrace a new life with this hot, good looking, honest and successful man. Solidify this with her having a child with him. I strongly believe this will be a good start. I really do not think someone can be without even a single friend. Since dru and grace left Sharon has just been lonely and the then writers worsened everything my making her find comfort only in sleeping with other men. This is wrong!! Create some good frienship opportunities for her especially with those that considered her as a tgreat or hated her- kill the phyllis=sharon hatred and nikki constant disapproval. Mak her to be a woman of charisma and aura just like the change of adam from bad to good!! What about Dorris Sharon’s mother, for crying out loud has she not been in that forsaking bin for long. Bring her back as she helps sharon find a new perspective in life and heal from whatever illness you deem fit. Use this to draw in a solid support from noah, faith and most of the newmans who could have ignored what she has been through.

2. Destroy Nick and Phyllis for good. Honestly what they have is not real and is mt founded on anything. Make nick figureout the pain he must have put sharon through and try to see her get well. Make him run this time after sharon but not to her interest anymore. Give him a new relationship fresh and unexpected.

3. Change the business setting in the movie. Enough of the newman being on top. The new man for sharon should be the heir of a powerful enterprise settling in Genoa City. Introduce a new family that will tussle the business world with the newman and the abbott. Expand Adams new business strategy to something big. create a real business revolution in the movie.

4. Give Jack a new sense of purpose. He’s been such a miserable man. He has no life since he lost phyllis. Worl on this chemistry between jack and phyllis. Prove that summer is not a newman but an Abbott.

5. Regenerate Collin; that she was not dead or something…she is back to destroy newman or something.

6. Improve the black performace of the movie. Neil has not found any true love at all. Give him something fresh as well but not harmony please!!! Lilly is too comfortable in the movie…spark serious challenges between her and cane. Give Devon more vigour in the soapie. Make him mount to a real love line a possible spark with summer. dont pair black couples only with blacks make the movie contemporary.

7. A pure teenage love story will be of an immense importance to the soapie such as faith and fern…something strong like nick and sharon back in the days; not the madness they did with eden going around with every body.

8. Settle nikki and victor once and for all. Enough of the stupid slipt and hooking up again. Its tiring

9. Destroy Villy’s perfect world. Chelsea looses the baby and comes back to get what is rightly hers from villy. The pressure mounts and things change. Billy eventually falls for chelsea and they work out. Connect Adam to Avery. Spark something refreshing. Vicky now looks for real love and a real family. Reed comes back to his mother and she falls in love with neil and find her bigger purpose at Abbott. Miraculously she gets pregnant again with neil.

10. Noah starts his industry and kindles a challenge with devon in that industry, due to cane’s changing into manipulative business man and falls for Ashley, Lilly leaves him. Show her a solid single mother aiming for the best for her kids- then connect her to noah giving her all the support she needs as a friend knowing what his mother has been through this kinks them up for solid love story. Change the Noah character at this stage, bring in someone hot like thomas on the bold and the beautiful- man enough.

11 create a new enermy for victor apart from jack- such as the father of sharon’s new husband. Introduce him as a much powerful man than victor with whom victor has a history when he started off as a business man. Make him a man who lost his wife and his quest for nikki.

12. Bring in a new bad woman like phyllis with whom they will be at logger heads all the time- the eldest daughter of the new powerful family. Portray a new tussle and need to get jack as hers!!! Steer up a new feud.

13. most esentially surprise the viewers as to victor’s reaction when he returns. He forgives sharon especially after she attemprs suicide as a result of a mental condition and being overwhelmed to figure out what is happeneing to her. He gives her all the required medical attention.

14. Connect Nick to Chloe. I am sorry i am no more in support of nick and sharon. That pure love they shared have been shattered but the writer should keep them good friends because of their history and kids. Kevin with Eden and Daniel works out things with daisy which returns, give phylis a hard time and changes o work things out in her family. Connect heather to ronan.

When the new writers step in only then will i start watching Y&R again!!

Days Of Our Lives

Stephen Schnetzer Talks On His Return to Days of our Lives and Working with Susan Seaforth Hayes In Emotional Episodes

Who says you can’t go home again? In the case of Another World favorite, Stephen Schnetzer (ex-Cass Winthrop), he has proven that it is true, and you can go back to your soap roots and where it all started for you.

Last week on April 11th, Schnetzer, along with several other key returns were on set at Days of our Lives taping all-new episodes of the Peacock streaming soap opera, centering on the funeral of Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes), and as part of the iconic soap opera’s 15,000th episode.

Stephen is reprising his first daytime role as Steve Olson, the brother of Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes). The last time Schnetzer appeared on a DAYS set was during his one and only run on the show from 1978 to 1980. Clearly, viewers will be in for some very emotional scenes when Steve returns to Salem to be there for his sister, Julie in her time of need. In real-life, Susan has been going through her own grief, having just lost Bill back on January 12th at the age of 98.

Photo: NBC

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Stephen during the 15K episode celebration ceremony, and during a break from taping the gut-wrenching funeral scenes, to get his thoughts on being part of these highly-anticipated moments that will air later this year in December. Here’s what he shared with us below.

What has this been like for you to work with Susan Seaforth Hayes after all of these years?

STEPHEN: She’s a dream and she’s so bright. We ran lines yesterday and we ended up just visiting for about 45 minutes and just catching up and telling tales about each other’s career. She even dropped off the autobiography that she and Bill did. And being back here at DAYS, every time I turn a corner, there’s another familiar face. When I was on the show 40 more years ago, a bunch of the guys, played softball on a team together. This is really a trip down memory lane as I knew it would be.

Photo: JPI

Taping Doug’s funeral must be a hard day for Susan. Are you checking in with her to help hold her up through this?

STEPHEN: I am and I’m checking in with Amy Shaughnessy (Susan’s assistant), and she’s holding her up more than anybody. We’re there for each other.

There will obviously be some major hankie-inducing moments when Steve comes back to Salem to console his sister.

STEPHEN: Oh, wait till you see it in December. It’s going to be great.

Were you surprised you got this call to come back to the show decades later?

STEPHEN: It was out of the blue! I was completely surprised. They should have called me decades ago! That’s what surprised me. When Another World went down, I thought I’d land somewhere else and it never happened. That was more of a surprise.

Cass is such an identifiable character for you. As well, you and Linda Dano (ex-Felicia Gallant) are so synonymous together as best friends Cass and Felicia from Another World. When fans heard you were reprising your role as Steve Olson on DAYS, they are now hoping there will be more of you on the show to come.

STEPHEN: Steven Olson is a real “Cassian “character. I cut my teeth on Steve Olson and that’s how Cass was introduced. He was kind of a roguish charmer. And then when the character stuck for Another World, they rehabilitated me, and turned me into one of the shows heroes. And that’s what would’ve happened if I stayed as Steve Olson probably. So, Steve is the ‘pre-Cass’, Cass.

As the story goes, you originally decided to leave Days of our Lives?

STEPHEN: I was never on contract. I was doing a day and a half a week and I got a Broadway play directed by Franco Zeffirelli starring Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay. I was able to it as I didn’t have to break a contract or anything. I cut loose and went back to New York for that.

How well did you get to know Bill Hayes during your first time around on DAYS?

STEPHEN: My first episode was with Bill and Susan, as her long lost brother coming into Salem. They were so good to me. They were so kind. I had been doing eight years of classical repertory theater, never been in front of a camera. I tell everybody, it took me longer than any other actor I’ve ever seen to get comfortable in front of a camera. And they were very supportive at that time in my career. Coming back to honor Bill now in 2024, and to be see Susan, I am just so happy to be here.

Looking forward to seeing the scenes between Stephen and Susan Seaforth Hayes come December and Doug’s funeral and surrounding episodes? Do you hope that DAYS might bring the character of Steve Olson back for a longer stay? Comment below.
