RATINGS: Soaps Bounce Back with Good Week!

Yes, we do report good news too!  On-Air On-Soaps is happy to say for the ratings period of April 9-13th, your favorite daytime dramas rebounded from a dismal previous week gaining viewers and doing well in key demos!

First off, The Young and the Restless came back strong gaining +349,000 viewers for the week with a total of over 4.3 million viewers remaining firmly in the number one spot.  It’s sister soap, The Bold and the Beautiful also gained viewers from the previous week adding + 167,000 viewers.  And, Days of our Lives which had been in a spiral perked up too!  The gang from Salem added a very good +221,000 viewers, while General Hospital, which just got its all important renewal pick-up from ABC lost only a tiny bit of viewers -27,000, but still remains at the bottom of the four soaps.  We can only believe that it’s disastrous lead-in, The Revolution is part of the main culprit here!

For this ratings period, the canceled One Life to Live replacement series dropped to a series low of 1.19 million eyeballs.  Can you imagine what GH would be looking like if One Life were still on the air?   Was there any reason on earth that One Life to Live should have been canceled when it ended with 2.9 million viewers tuning into the finale?  Many primetime and daytime series, would kill for numbers like that these days … just sayin’.

You can view the entire ratings week story via Soap Opera Network here!  And for more on the tanking The Revolution, you can view what TV Media Insights had to say about it all here!

So let us know what storylines you are digging that would make you want to tune-in to your favorite soap everyday? And what is missing …  so we can get even more eyeballs to keep the soap genre alive!

Glad they bounced back! Hopefully, this positive trend will continue.

As for GH still losing some viewers, I think you’re right about “The Crap-olution” affecting its numbers.

Wish I lived in landview to,and you are right about the crap-olution,abc should take it off the air now and put one life to live repeats on,that will bring the ratings up and give them time to put back together what they took apart,I miss all my friends from landview and would love to have them back.

I would love that! I love watching OLTL reruns on soapnet, I have them all dvr’d.

I get so pissed-off OLTL should have nerver been cancelled!!!!!!!!!!!!OLTL & GH were team.. Watch OLTL and than GH….Now gh… Gh is mising it’s counterpart OLTL………………..I miss all the people of landview……….They had to brak the awesome team What a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GH has to do more better in their ratings…They are doing okay, but they have to do BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent idea, Barbara! You should be in charge of daytime programming at ABC. I’d have alot more respect for that network if you were running it! Yes, if ABC won’t bring OLTL back to it’s loyal fans, at least bring us some more reruns. I’ve been taping all the AMC and OLTL reruns on every nite and I love them. It’s been months since they took our shows off the air, I still miss them so much. I highly doubt The Chew and The Revolution will ever know such viewer loyalty. ABC really screwed up and became driven by greed. What did it get them???

A MASSIVE issue with GH is whats playing outon screne right now. How can Ron. C write a story where the rape victim is the bad guy and it’s about her husband’s pain. This is a real disrespectful s/l. And it’s been horrible since he’s got here. He stated he wants to test their love you mean to tell me that her being raped on there honeymoon and possible preg. by the rapist isn’t enough. There is a reason why he’s been getting backlash from this storyline it’s sick. This isn’t love in the afternoon this isn’t something you wanna see. And ANOTHER DID s/l this is GH not OLTL. The best writter in daytime my BUTT making a rape victim the bad guy PLEASE

You never watched OLTL did you? OLTL was about romance. This sick crap is typical of GH and the Franco storyline that already existed BEFORE RC showed up.

So right! I’m sick of all the mob BS on GH!

As a viewer since 1973 who found the mob stories unbearable and the writing of Bob Guza terrible and in total disregard for the characters and show’s own history, I totally disagree with you here. Soaps are dying from all the negativity and discontent. Other lapsed viewers (GH had millions more) will read comments like yours and say “well I know I won’t be wasting my time checking out whats going on on GH” and eventually yes, it will be cancelled. There will always be characters and stories and couples and actors or characters you tolerate but actually dislike, but the show AS A WHOLE is drastically improving since Ron Carlivati took over as Head Writer. He is slowly integrating several characters from the higher rated former lead-in One Life To Live while balancing current stories without making drastic changes all at once, all the while having brought back Finola Hughes as Anna Devane on contract, and other former GH viewer favorites Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio), Emma Samms (Holly Scorpio), Rick Springfield (Dr. Noah Drake), Robin Mattson (Heather Webber) and soon Kristina Wagner (Felicia Jones) AND promises more returns and has done all this since taking over the show in January!!!!! The story you are siting for GH’s bad ratings are literally from thursday and friday’s episodes and are very black and white views. Ron is not writing Sam as “the bad guy” and OF COURSE Jason would be in pain over discovering that his wife discovered her rapist–not him–is the father of the baby she’s carrying and she chose to confide in someone else–John, who’s virtually a stranger– and keep Jason in the dark, so soon after he felt betrayed by her for keeping Robin’s death from him and she just promised not to keep anything from him again. With “love in the afternoon” has to come problems and hurdles to face, just like in life, or the stories would be dull and the romatic scenes wouldn’t have as much meaning and reunions wouldn’t be as rewarding. DID is a very real thing and OLTL is hardly the only soap that ever did the storyline, as they did with Viki, Megan, Jessica and even Todd (faking it). On GH, Alexis had a type of DID story and many years earlier, in the late 1970’s, a patient of Jeff Webber’s, named Lisa/Lana, had a split personality. Guiding Light’s Carrie Todd Marler, As the World Turns’s Royce Keller, Loving’s, Lily Slater, Days Of Our Lives Trish Banning, Jessica Horton and Kim Brady, Sharlene on Another World, Eden Castillo on Santa Barbara and a few more all had DID on soaps. It is a common soap opera storyline and one many of us enjoy with the acor or actress given a real acting challenge. GH is great and only getting better.

I agree. Ron C and Frank V have done wonders in such a short period of time! When I first heard about the OLTL characters heading to PC, I couldn’t imagine how they would fit in to the existing storylines/characters. Well, so far, Frank and Ron have done a brilliant job achieving this task. I’ve watched both OLTL and GH since I was in middle school and although I was extremely saddened by OLTL’s demise, I am thrilled with the direction GH is taking with Valentini/Carlivati at the helm. I actually look forward to watching GH everyday; something I hadn’t done in a long time. I’ve said it before in previous posts on this website, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, if you are a fan of the soap opera genre tune in to these four daytime dramas that are still on the air. Show the networks that there is still a market for this type of entertainment. If not, they may be gone forever.

the did storyline was already in the works way before ron took over

That has to stop now ,jason is so upset to find out that franco is his twin brother ,how he is treating Sam is heartless ,but then again jason is heartless ,Hello sam was raped by that monster lets talk about her pain and what she is going through,Hopefully in the near future we find out that jason(even though I am pissed off at him Now) is the father Of Sams baby. And yes CHRIS ,I am not happy at the way Sam is getting treated ,the last thing I would want to do is go to Sonnys stupid birthday party ,sam has to deal with the fact that she was raped and that should come first to jason calling her a lier again. However I like all the other stories going on I really am enjoying the few one life to live cross overs they are no problem at all.

I would like to see Sam turn to John for consolation. Love the references made to a “past life” as a homage to Caleb and Livvie. Honestly, I’m getting bored with Sam and Jason. Like Barbara T, I too am enjoying the OLTL crossovers. They’re are being integrated onto the canvas beautifully.

That storyline was set in motion long before RC got there. He had no choice. As for Konnie – I haven’t had this much fun watching GH in a long, long time. KUDOS to RC and FV.

If you are saying RC had no choice for this Franco s/l isn’t so far from true. He came out his mouth and said THIS is what he wanted to do. He wrote the Robin s/l so of course he had time to do this. How is a rape vicitm fun.

Watching kate/connie is good ,Im enjoying that to.connie isnt taking any shit off kate ,the other day in the mirror scene, that was a riot and very good acting, liking kate/connie even more.I cant wait to see connie introduce herself to sonny in johnnys bed (priceless) thats a good old fashion soap opera and I love it ,Its been years since he has been with connie cant wait to see the look on sonnys face .I will have to watch that scene over, and over again.

Ditto.

AMEN! I loved OLTL, it was my favorite soap. But they need to lighten up. I know they have a mess to clean up from the previous regime, but the viewers are sick of the violence and depressing storylines. We want adventure, mystery, romance and a little levity. At least I do.

Chris, what do you mean, how is a rape victim fun? That I am not seeing I am pissed off at jason for thinking of himself first ,and sams rape is like a after thought, also I have read somewhere that there will be a big change to jason,Maybe this is the start.I still trust Rons writing ,he has something going and I bet you it will be good it always is.

GH did stories like this wayyyyyy before Ron and Frank got there.

While I like the news, one of the four soaps will always be at the bottom. It is just a fact. With over 2 million viewers a week and Days of Our Lives barely beating GH in terms of ratings, GH will be fine. ABC will not be making the mistake of cancelling this soap even after their one year reprieve. Hopefully next year Agnes will have the rights to her soaps so that our beloved AMC and OLTL can go somewhere else.

Oprah should reconsider having them on her network. She could use the viewers!

Robert ,I hope you are right about abc/disney not cancelling general hospital in a year.and that agnus nixon gets her stories back and we can watch them on a network that cares about those two classic soaps and how they should continue.Oprah should reconsider and she should also put the daytime emmys on her network to .

I sent Oprah a message on her Facebook requesting just that (daytime emmys). It would do wonders for her network and we would be able to watch our favorite daytime stars on the red carpet.

ABC doesn’t care about ratings when it comes to the soaps! If they did, they never would’ve cancelled the highly rated OLTL! Did you see the kind of crap Doprah has on OWN? She would never put high quality soaps on or the daytime emmys! She only shows garbage!

She probably can’t afford it, production cost is what keeps the networks away from soaps nowadays…

I’m scared that both Days and GH will be cancelled next year. They both have contracts for another year. All soap fans need to support all the shows and keep them on the air.

they should give GH , OLTL time period already, and have the GMA afternoon addition air in the slot they plan to give to Katie Couric, why wait till september? just do it already, and leave GH alone and not mess w/ it period.

GH’s ratings woes are primarily due to the Revolution tinkering around only a million viewers. I think if GH had OLTL as a lead-in with the way it’s being written now that it might be giving B&B a run for it’s money. That being said, GH is still not perfected. They cannot become complacent especially with ABC testing GMA. If the root cause of the ratings issue (it’s not all lead-in if a show is written well) isn’t determined ABC will opt for GMA if it does well.

I am not sure these days that a lead in means anything at all really. I watched As The World Turns on CBS for 20 plus years without giving a shish about Y&R or B & B. Lead IN Lead OUT…made no nevermind. Yes, I did watch them once or twice a year if I saw someone interesting joining the cast (usually for a month or so, because they would eventually be killed off.) These days with TIVO and digital recording lead ins and lead outs mean Jack Squat! Since ATWT was cancelled, I did watch Y & R more, mostly because of Maura West. What a Joke that turned out to be. I did not like that she took the part of Diane. To me, the original actress was the best. I love Maura though and would love to see her on Revenge. I also prefer Brenda Dickson to Jess Walton as Jill…but maybe that just shows my age. If you watched Brenda Dickson in the 70’s, you would agree!?

The point is…lead in…lead out…it makes no difference to me. Just tell stories that are interesting. I know they are daytime dramas…but I also enjoy some comedy along with the drama. The shows need to tell good stories with drama and some real life everyday comedy as well. Life is a bitch enough…so let the characters chill a little and have some fun!

Mix a little Santa Barbara and As The World Turns along with the Gloria Monty and Douglas Marland writing and producing and get back to what good soaps were all about. The writing/producing these days is weak period.

As a longtime fan of ATWT, I could not stomach the show for years unitl Hogan Sheffer became Head Writer and saved the show for me. This could be a lesson for Sony/CBS. Hogan is already there on the writing team. Give him more power to write than the head writer that has the last name of Bell. Don’t be Ding-Dong’s (pun intended!) Hogan Sheffer would be a much better head-writier for Y & R.

I agree. I have never paid any attention to the shows on before my soaps. I watch what I want. I can, however, understand the logic. Some people who may not have anything else to do may just sit and watch because that’s what’s on.

I hate The Revolution. But in all fairness to The Revolution, I don’t think it has anyting to do with the ratings of GH. GH had these same awful ratings when OLTL was there.

GH has been on a downward spiral since May or June of last year.

I agree. I am enjoying GH right now for the most part, but I really want to see it get to 50. I think ABC/D blew it when they cancelled AMC & OLTL and viewers left in droves.

The fact is that GH did lose viewers. The mob continues to be their focus. If viewers thought the mob was the end all, we’d be tuning in faithfully all this time. But that is not the case. Lower ratings are because the love affair with Sonny & Jason comes mostly from TPTB. Viewers turned out in droves to see Tristan Rogers come back as Scorpio, and his return got this year’s only 2.0. Logic would suggest that if TPTB balanced the show and gave us Robert back, the ratings would increase. Instead we get a mix of mob & more OLTL vets than GH vets. That doesn’t seem to be solving the numbers game.

I never understood why they have had the mob on the show this long. I don’t get the love for Sonny and Jason, they are just thugs who do horrible things to people and keep getting away with it, especially Sonny.

I never got the mob angle either. I assumed it was an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of HBO’s The Sopranos.

i am very happy that the soap operas are picking up in the ratings. we need to support our remaining 4 soaps. thank god that the revolution finally got cancelled. we have to continue to fight for general hospital to remain on air. please watch general hospital because it is getting really good now. please bring back jackie zeman as bobbie spencer. i really miss her alot. also please bring back kassie depaiva and put her on contract.

Ricardo, I totally agree with you about us needing to support the 4 remaining soaps. If you are a soap fan, Soap Classics is also releasing multi episode sets of special, hand-picked classic episodes of special occasions and specific themes for the longest running shows in broadcast history, Guiding Light, and As the World Turns. There may be future releases from them of Search For Tomorrow, Another World, The Edge of Night and Texas, too, with fan support through buying the GL & ATWT DVD sets. I think General Hospital is better than its been in years and has dramatically improved and I have been a viewer since 1973! I would also love to see Jackie Zeman back–on contract– on GH as Bobbie Spencer! She is Luke’s sister, Carly’s mother, Lulu’s aunt, Felicia and Monica and Anna’s friend and Noah’s ex! I think her son Lucas should return, too. I read that Kassie DePaiva does not want to relocate from New York to California where GH films. She and her husband James DePaiva (Max on OLTL) live on the east coast but she is willing to commute in order to appear from time to time as Blair. I was also a OLTL fan since 1978 and think they have blended these characters in naturally and with a nice balance along with current characters and the past GH characters of Anna, Robert, Holly, Noah, Heather and soon Felicia, and I even think they should still bring 2 more actors from OLTL over on contract (Trevor St. John and Melissa Archer as Victor and Natalie) and have others visit, but all within a reasonable timeframe, all the while continuing to bring some GH past characters and actors back and even phase out some of the ones now in the mob storyline and concentrate again on the hospital and staff. It’s great that they have already brought Starr, John, Todd and soon Tea on from OLTL–and given all four a contract. So far only Finola Hughes (Anna) is back on contract. They should also offer contracts to Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio), Robin Mattson (Heather Webber) and Kristina Wagner (Felicia Jones)! Robert’s story is unfinished. Imagine if, down the road, he returns and finds out Luke deceived him and caused him to miss Robin’s funeral and chase after Ethan, who isn’t really his son. By then Luke & Anna will likely be paired as a couple and imagine how betrayed Luke’s best friend Robert would feel about that, too, Luke having even shared Anna’s grieving over Robin with him. As far as Emma Samms (Holly) and Rick Springfield (Noah Drake) I think those actors are happier with making recurring visits since I think she still lives in England and he still tours with his singing, cruises and appearances.

They have to put Kassie depava on contract she belongs with todd and starr.

Yeah they need Blair, Tea and Victor Jr. on contract.

I agree Ricardo. Bring back Bobbie Spencer, we all need to watch the remaining 4 soaps, and yes, GH IS getting good now. 🙂

GH is nothing like OLTL. OLTL ratings for last year was much better than GH right now. The only thing is similar is the DID storyline. As far as the Revolution goes, ABC/D needs to get rid of it right now. Their disastrous ratings are pulling GH down with it. GH is so much better than it use to be. Loving the Kate/Connie and Jason/Sam storyline. Frank and Ron are doing a fantastic job finally giving Jason and Sam and Kate/Sonny a storyline that is watchable and full of drama. Instead of them sitting around hugging all the time.

that you michael for posting this – your site is the first one i visit daily because i can always count on you for the latest soap news……..

Looks like some of these commenters don’t care about the remaining soaps.
I miss my soaps dearly and I will watch Days and GH to help the cause and I will continue to boycott ABC except for GH out of respect for the staff and actors of my favorites soaps.

The revolution has nothing to do with GH’s ratings. If you think the success of your show is linked to the show before, you are doomed to fail…

Yayyyy!!! I love my soaps and hope they have a long life span, despite the networks wanting to phase’em out for boring, who care’s, cheaper talk shows. I for one don’t want to see a slew of that kind of tv (talki shows) during the 3 hour stretch of daytime.
I’m excited about May sweeps. Always looked forward to sweeps and what’s in store. I miss my Soap Opera Weekly, but enjoy reading all these on-line soap boards. Rgt now I’m watching GH and DOOL, mostly GH.

I watched Kimberely McCullough’s interviews w/her soap “family” and they’re the best, should also be a reason why soaps should remain on. All that talent and history that was unfolded in those interviews….Tristian Rogers said it’s sad the soap genre is fading. IT’s important to the industry, where actors go to hone their craft after acting school. How could you not learn something w/that daily, intense schedule and the up and coming actors learning from the veterans. I as a fan love to tune in daily to see what’s going on and not waiting a week or more.

Hoping for the best.

I’m glad GH is staying around. But I know it was a huge mistake cancelling OLTL. I really want it back on the air. No matter how many characters are cross-over to GH, its just not the same. I watched everyday. When i couldn’t watch, I bought a TV receiver radio, then a VCR, now a DVD-R. Never missed a day. I hate ABC.

The Rev-pollution is over, so mow our soaps can thrive! Yay!

General Hospital has been fantastic. I wish more viewers would tune in and find out for themselves. I have been enjoying every storyline that is going on at the moment. I know that the new head writer has so much more good stuff in store for us. I really think that ABC needs to start doing promos of the show. I have not seen any promos during their morning shows that I watch. I watch GMA, Live with Kelly and Rachel Ray. There are many people who watch these shows that have no idea how good General Hospital has been. ABC is not helping General Hospital at all here.

The absence of promos for GH isn’t encouraging. It’s as if ABC is bidding its time until it can find a cheaper replacement. Or maybe ABC desperately needs advertising revenue that it cannot afford to spare the time to promote GH.

I think the attitude among executives is that if people aren’t already soap viewers they are not going to start, which is inaccurate. Compared to other soaps, in its last year, OLTL was gaining more young viewers than any other soap. OLTL was actually creating a young fan base, coveted by advertisers, that would have sustained it and had the potential for growth. Truly, soaps are unfairly denigrated by snobs and not valued for their addicting entertainment.

I think ABC is secretly hoping that GMA2 will bail them out of the mess they’ve created. That’s not to say that GH will be cancelled in September-the turnaround would be too short, BUT if GMA2 draws numbers this summer, GH’s days will be numbered all over again

Days Of Our Lives

Stephen Schnetzer Talks On His Return to Days of our Lives and Working with Susan Seaforth Hayes In Emotional Episodes

Who says you can’t go home again? In the case of Another World favorite, Stephen Schnetzer (ex-Cass Winthrop), he has proven that it is true, and you can go back to your soap roots and where it all started for you.

Last week on April 11th, Schnetzer, along with several other key returns were on set at Days of our Lives taping all-new episodes of the Peacock streaming soap opera, centering on the funeral of Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes), and as part of the iconic soap opera’s 15,000th episode.

Stephen is reprising his first daytime role as Steve Olson, the brother of Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes). The last time Schnetzer appeared on a DAYS set was during his one and only run on the show from 1978 to 1980. Clearly, viewers will be in for some very emotional scenes when Steve returns to Salem to be there for his sister, Julie in her time of need. In real-life, Susan has been going through her own grief, having just lost Bill back on January 12th at the age of 98.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Stephen during the 15K episode celebration ceremony, and during a break from taping the gut-wrenching funeral scenes, to get his thoughts on being part of these highly-anticipated moments that will air later this year in December. Here’s what he shared with us below.

What has this been like for you to work with Susan Seaforth Hayes after all of these years?

STEPHEN: She’s a dream and she’s so bright. We ran lines yesterday and we ended up just visiting for about 45 minutes and just catching up and telling tales about each other’s career. She even dropped off the autobiography that she and Bill did. And being back here at DAYS, every time I turn a corner, there’s another familiar face. When I was on the show 40 more years ago, a bunch of the guys, played softball on a team together. This is really a trip down memory lane as I knew it would be.

Taping Doug’s funeral must be a hard day for Susan. Are you checking in with her to help hold her up through this?

STEPHEN: I am and I’m checking in with Amy Shaughnessy (Susan’s assistant), and she’s holding her up more than anybody. We’re there for each other.

There will obviously be some major hankie-inducing moments when Steve comes back to Salem to console his sister.

STEPHEN: Oh, wait till you see it in December. It’s going to be great.

Were you surprised you got this call to come back to the show decades later?

STEPHEN: It was out of the blue! I was completely surprised. They should have called me decades ago! That’s what surprised me. When Another World went down, I thought I’d land somewhere else and it never happened. That was more of a surprise.

Cass is such an identifiable character for you. As well, you and Linda Dano (ex-Felicia Gallant) are so synonymous together as best friends Cass and Felicia from Another World. When fans heard you were reprising your role as Steve Olson on DAYS, they are now hoping there will be more of you on the show to come.

STEPHEN: Steven Olson is a real “Cassian “character. I cut my teeth on Steve Olson and that’s how Cass was introduced. He was kind of a roguish charmer. And then when the character stuck for Another World, they rehabilitated me, and turned me into one of the shows heroes. And that’s what would’ve happened if I stayed as Steve Olson probably. So, Steve is the ‘pre-Cass’, Cass.

As the story goes, you originally decided to leave Days of our Lives?

STEPHEN: I was never on contract. I was doing a day and a half a week and I got a Broadway play directed by Franco Zeffirelli starring Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay. I was able to it as I didn’t have to break a contract or anything. I cut loose and went back to New York for that.

How well did you get to know Bill Hayes during your first time around on DAYS?

STEPHEN: My first episode was with Bill and Susan, as her long lost brother coming into Salem. They were so good to me. They were so kind. I had been doing eight years of classical repertory theater, never been in front of a camera. I tell everybody, it took me longer than any other actor I’ve ever seen to get comfortable in front of a camera. And they were very supportive at that time in my career. Coming back to honor Bill now in 2024, and to be see Susan, I am just so happy to be here.

Looking forward to seeing the scenes between Stephen and Susan Seaforth Hayes come December and Doug’s funeral and surrounding episodes? Do you hope that DAYS might bring the character of Steve Olson back for a longer stay? Comment below.
