REPORT: Have GH's Contract Negotiations With Rebecca Herbst Hit A Rough Patch? Are Sony and DAYS Waiting In The Wings?

One of General Hospital’s front burner and most popular stars, Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth Webber) is currently in contract negotiations with the ABC daytime drama series.
However, a report surfaced on Monday via Daytime Confidential’s Jamey Giddens that indicates talks between the actress and the soap have hit an impasse and have stalled.
But that’s not all, a Sony insider revealed to DC, that Days of our Lives is very interested in bringing Becky to the Salem canvas.
Herbst began her GH career in 1997 as the daughter of Jeff Webber (Richard Dean Anderson). Over the past 12 months, Rebecca has been front and center delivering emotional performances as Elizabeth has her once believed-to-be-dead love of her life, Jason (Billy Miller) back in the mix of her life, as well as her once believed-to-be-dead young son, Jake (James Nigbor).

General Hospital’s Adam J. Harrington Weighs-in On John and Carly, and How it’s ‘Starting to Get Very Complicated”
On recent episodes of General Hospital, Carly (Laura Wright) came to John “Jagger” Cates (Adam Harrington) rescue as he was beaten down in an assault. Carly put on her “nurses cap,” sort of speak, and got John to his hotel room and watched over to him, to make sure he didn’t lose consciousness.
GH fans also got their first glimpse of what may be a new romance for Carly, if she and John continue to bond. If John and Carly were to have a relationship, it would certainly have a ripple effect with Jason (Steve Burton) and Sonny (Maurice Benard).
Adam J. Harrington shared his view on the scenes and what might be next between the two. Speaking to Soap Opera Digest, Harrington shared, “I thought it was written in a way where there’s an understanding and a respect between them both. I don’t think there was any moment where she was not aware that he’s an FBI agent, and there was no moment that he wasn’t aware of her history and relationship to other people in the town. I really liked it. I was really looking forward to shooting it with Laura and we had a really nice time shooting it.”

When Carly and John part ways, it seems there were some romantic sparks, as Harrington puts it, “Isn’t that interesting that sometimes with people, the one moment they actually show how they feel is when they know there’s an escape hatch. They know they’re about to walk away. So, it’s almost safe in that moment to do it. I thought that was really special about how (the writers) handled John and Carly. Even the music in that scene was beautifully done.”
Where is this all heading? Conflict! Internally and professionally, and as Adam explains, “Who Carly was to John on paper as just a tool to be used as bait is starting to get very complicated.”

General Hospital’s Steve Burton Reveals the Emotional Scene He Almost Could Not Get Through
On a recent episode of General Hospital, Jason received a message from his mother, Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) via a note. The effect it had on Jason’s portrayer, Steve Burton turned out to be quite visceral.
As GH fans know, although Jason’s bio-mom was Susan Moore, he was raised and adopted by Monica. Speaking on his Daily Drama podcast with his co-host and GH co-star, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), Steve shared some insight on the difficulties he had getting through that scene.
Burton shared that in the key moment, “Brooklyn (played by Amanda Setton) came in and that’s where she gave me (Jason) the letter from Monica. That was a very hard scene for me to do. That was a tough one. That was the one time I was almost going to call ‘cut!’ It read ‘Jason, I believe in you.’ I was literally going to walk off the set.”

To clarify and in the story, Monica was saying “I believe in you” and that she knows Jason didn’t shoot Dante (Dominic Zamprogna). Steve added, “It was tough, man. Emotionally, it was a tough scene. It was overwhelming in the moment.”
Steve went on to detail to Anderson, “She (Brook Lynn) pushed it to me and I read it and she was walking out and I had to stop her, but I was so emotional I couldn’t even get it out. And at that point, I’m like, ‘Do I just keep going … or do I just walk off the set right now?’ But, I knew just to stay, because it’s so hard to get back there, once you shut it down. I knew, the next take wasn’t going to be the same.”

It’s clear that Leslie Charleson is so missed on-screen as Monica by all of her castmates, and that Jason and Monica had a very special mother/son relationship throughout the decades on GH.

George Russo to Appear on General Hospital as Carmine Cerullo
Coming up, it looks like Brook Lynn’s (Amanda Setton) grandfather, Carmine Cerullo is headed to Port Charles.
According to casting news from the ABC soap opera, George Russo will take on the role. Russo will tape his episode next week on April 15th and will appear on the May 15th episode of the long-running daytime drama series.
If George looks familiar he has been in numerous primetime television shows and motion pictures including: The Offer. Winning Time, Grand Crew and Shameless.

Longtime GH viewers will recall that Lois’ (Rena Sofer) dad, Carmine, was previously showed up in Port Charles on and off from 1994 to 1996 and was played by John Capudice.
Clearly, it seems that Carmine will be a part of Chase (Josh Swickard) and Brook Lynn’s wedding. Will it go off without a hitch? Are you looking forward to it? Stay tuned.

I have gotten so fed up with Elizabeth and her machinations and manipulations… and NO consequences for this last stunt of hers (keeping Jason to herself) for a year… knowing full well he had a wife and son waiting for him, longing for him, to come home to them. She needs to be sent packing… and take her boys with her.
Interesting, I wonder who she will play on DAYS if she jumped ship! I like Becky and all, but would rather DAYS bring Kassie DePaiva back!

I’d rather see Kassie come back to Salem. She was not treated fairly by being fired. There was no rhyme or real reason for it… unless… and heaven forbid… that it was to make way for Herbst???? Lord, I hope not. That would be adding insult to injury!!

I love General Hospital. It is my soap. I would love to see Rebecca stay put. However, I can see from her point of view why she might want to move along at this point. She’s an obvious fan favorite but the writers continue to serve her character poorly. She’s a capable actor. I like the recent scenes with her and Roger Howarth. Liz needs a real romance however and not a dysfunctional situation. Imagine if the writers had done what they should have and put her and Patrick together when Robin left. The drama upon Robin’s return would have been amazing. If Days offers her a juicy role she just might jump ship. Come on GH! Pay her what she’s worth and let her loose on a great, new romantic story line. Don’t lose another heavy hitter to a rival soap. Long live GH!
I have to agree…I think GH would be absolutely foolish to let Becky walk…she is such an amazing actress…they should realize that from the last time they let her go and the outcry of all her fans to bring her back. she plays her part well enough that the fans are hating the character of Liz which Becky brings to life. that shows how well she does what she is paid to do…perhaps with her being on the front burners as long as she has she is entitled to a raise..she puts her heart and soul into Liz..ABC AND GH DO NOT LET BECKY LEAVE, WHATEVER IT TAKES….
Recast the role and let her go.
I concur, I want Rebecca to stay on GH. However, she has been on GH longer than Kelly Monaco and Laura Wright yet the producers/writers haven’t given Rebecca her due. Good for Rebecca if she can get a better deal elsewhere and shame on GH if they let her go!

You are SO right. I hate to tell all the naysayers out there but Elizabeth is from one of the core GH families and Rebecca has hit it out of the park with her acting. The FANS saved her when the idiots who run the show tried to fire her. If they can OVERPAY certain folks and give them just scenery to chew on (We ALL know who those folks are) then they can pay Rebecca. They just brought on several characters in the past year (and even brought folks back) who they didn’t have to pay her what she is worth. Days has NO place for her with all they just brought in….GH needs to keep her.
The news is out–Rebecca is leaving. GH has managed to lose a double winner–a legacy character who is still young. On top of that, RH is an amazingly gifted actress with an ethereal and unique beauty. I don’t feel Lizzy can be re cast.
And executive producer Nathan Varni private messaged a fan detailing the private contract negotiations. Divulging the aforementioned details is unheard of and is most unprofessional and now Nathan’s private message is all over Twitter.
Wow, Harry. Is it crystal clear that the Varni message is legitimate? I know Twitter messages can sometimes turn out to be faked. If it’s legit, I have to agree with you—how incredibly unprofessional. Sounds like an early attempt at damage control to me; if so, may it backfire royally.
Very sorry to hear that RH is leaving; her performances have always been a bright spot even when Liz has been behaving badly. I hope TPTB realize, at some level, that with the mob-tied characters multiplying, there are fewer and fewer characters worth caring about.
Let’s hope they can work things out. Although the way they write for our modern day Jessie Brewer, maybe she has had it too and on to greener pastures like someone else who is now on Y&R. I love the character and the actress and losing her would be a horrible loss for GH. I can think of a lot of characters I wouldn’t mind not seeing, but Elizabeth is not one of them!
Elizabeth Webber should be a constant front-burner character. And we should have more of her family present. Never liked how they wrote out of some the others. Miss Herbst is perfect in the role and deserves to be treated right. But this is show business!
I agree Rebecca is a great actress !!! I love her at GH and they are not treating their core characters like they should… If they lose her it would be a huge mistake!
I actually disagree about Elizabeth, the character. The actress, Rebecca Herbst, is excellent IMO & always does a great job. But, the character is so one-note, so joyless, that her storylines are derivative year after year after year. I wouldn’t be surprised if the “negotiation” snag may be that GH really wants to keep her & RH is just bored & wants to leave & do something else. RH & Alison Sweeney have a lot in common. They both came on to soaps when they were very young, played the same character for decades & built their careers in one place. But, while Sami Brady on DAYS had one hell of a life, Elizabeth has been a doormat (again IMO) for decades. Even great stories & acting challenges weren’t enough to keep Sweeney with DAYS when she wanted to grow as a professional & do other things.
The other female leads on GH over the years – Laura, Anna, Carly, Sam, Alexis, Brenda, Robin, Maxi, Lulu – have had adventures; been allowed to be funny, sarcastic, flippant and/or witty. Elizabeth is more long-suffering & sad & put upon than any female character I’ve seen on GH. I wouldn’t blame RH for leaving just for the challenge of doing something completely different.

Yes, it would be nice to see Lizzy happy–not dwelling on Jason anymore and moving on with her life.

What an insult to actors that spent their lives bringing to life wonderful characters that anchored their show. Not sure what your definition of “cool” is, but I think Erika Slazek, Susan Lucci, and Jeanne Cooper are some of the coolest people I’ve ever seen.
Me too I loved these women wish they would have kept All my Children and One life to Live on but the shows got boring and lost ratings and were taken off as these writers are doing GH I hope not it is the only one I have been watching for 50+ years they have changed so many characters kill them off bring them back with different people that u have to get to know all over again but kept the bad ones as Rebecca I can’t stand her or Brenda glad she’s gone and Robin I’m glad she’s gone but until these writers bring some Love back to this show I’m fixing to leave it they are divorcing Dante and Lulu big mistake and still beating around the bush of bringing Jason and Sam back together as husband and wife and a father for Danny it is not the same..
How would moving from one soap to another be “trying something different?”
She’s already probably spent her “best days” on a soap, and will probably spend the rest of her “lifetime” on soaps.
She’s done nothing but soaps for 18 years, so maybe she’s not interested in anything else. Besides, she appears to be the primary wage earner in her household, so a steady job is a good thing.
Interesting timing of her statement posted the other day – her thanking her fans. Regardless of how people feel about her character, Becky is a good actress and her character has a lot of history with the show. People complain about all the new characters. This is an actress and character that ABC should keep on the show.

Given Days’ penchant for bringing in big soap names and then abandoning them a year or so later (see: Melissa Archer, Kassie De Paiva, Daniel Cosgrove), I think RH would be wise to stick with GH. As much as I dislike the writing for Elizabeth, I am not sure RH would fare any better at Days. At least at GH, she’s a known quantity, and TPTB are quite aware that she has a following and a fairly vocal fan base. It’s no guarantee of continued employment, but it does shift the odds a bit in the right direction.

I think she should be Mackenzie recast on Y&R. Mac is Katherine Chandler’s granddaughter. Mac was a lovely brunette whose first love was Billy Abbott.
She was a good person, albeit flawed–she would be about thirty-five or so right now.
I always thought Lizzy had great chemistry with Patrick. Would it not be interesting to see RH as Mac stirring things up with Billy now that Jason Thompson is playing him. I could see her going toe to toe with Victoria.
I’m thinking if they are smart they will cast her as Stephanie Johnson. I could see her doing well paired w/ Mary Beth Evans, Nichols, & that kid playing Joey. Much prefer that to another new “Serena” style character on Days. That said, I hate the recent writing for Liz but wish the character would stick around – with the right writing.

Elizabeth, your probably right. I was thinking she was older. Technically, she should be closer to Sami’s age than Abigail but when they brought her back in 06 she was around Abby’s age. My bad. Then of course EJ shouldn’t have been much older than Will, lol.
This is a disappointing state of affairs for GH when contract negotiations with a 17 year vet and popular actress turns sour. It feels like GH has it’s priorities screwed up. How does something like this even happen?

This also happened with Jason Thompson. It is indefensible, short-sighted, insulting, and stupid. Becky is a gem. Just write for her! They may not realize it, but Liz is a mainstay at the hospital. When there are scenes at the hospital we instinctively expect to see her. Without BH, not ONE nurse character, or a nurse character on contract. And yet…and yet…character number 4 for Michael Easton.
Jenn, I see this as nothing more than a plant by her agent to get fans riled up and cement Rebecca with a new, fat contract on GH! ie, she aint goin nowhere!
I think you’re right, Timmm. Firstly, there’s just too much going on with the Liz/Jason/Sam/Jake storyline. It would be too ineffective to continue without her if they decapitate the story at this stage.
It wouldn’t be very judicious of TPTB to stop rowing mid-stream.

She is not going anywhere and this will be resolved quickly. Liz’s redemption arch was just launched this week and Herbst is a leading lady again on GH. Herbst leaving back in the 2010-2014 years might have made sense cause she was demoted to supporting status but right now she’s topping the episode counts every month. Liz is one of those rare characters who moves the needle and GH isn’t going to let her get away but this media leak is nothing but a negotiation ploy to rile up her fans. It worked before and will work again.
I don’t see that at all. Sorry but Becky has never been known to be adifficult actress. Neither was Jason Thompson for that matter but for whatever reason GH is getting it done as far as negotiations with their popular young hospital vets go. If she were playing a Corinthos or her 4th character in fours years, I doubt there would even be a need for contract negotiations. This says so much about the twisted priorities of those in charge. GH should never have gotten to the point where they lost one of there two lone hospital contract characters and now to almost lose the other one? NOPE

The reality is, as many commented upon when ME’s return was announced, that TPTB don’t care about what GH ever was. They just want “a soap” on in the afternoon where they can throw former soap legends up against the wall like wet toilet paper and see what sticks. And as far as the cost of the wet toliet paper, well that’s on the backs of beloved GH vets whom people like FV couldn’t care less about.

One bad bump in story-telling for a character should not negate the years of joy this character has brought so many. I encourage you to watch scenes of Lucky and Elizabeth when they were young.
If this was management’s plan all along, it seems to have worked: totally destroy a major legacy character to the point that viewers hate her. Hate her so much that there will be little backlash when letting her go.
Despicable. And shameful. And yes, Harry 1, the Jasam fans and this and other boards are out of control. One board has a thread entitled “I Want Liz Killed,” with a lot subscribing to this. It is a notoriously anti-Liz, pro-Sam board. Unfortunately, the Sam and Jasam fans have made me dislike the character of Sam, and Jasam. But, unlike the Jasam fanatics, I do not want Kelly Monaco to lose her job.
These Jasam fans ARE nuts and have taken character propping to a whole other disturbed realm, repeatedly tweeting to GH that Becky should be fired.

I am guessing that you did not see her rape scenes. I can understand why you can dislike her character but Sam and Carly BOTH have done just as bad of things and that was ok..Heck even Laura in her heyday was NO saint. Carly and Laura BOTH have multiple children w multiple fathers..Alexis does too…

Harry, I have to comment on your comment. Hysterical and very intriguingly visual. Both Sam and Jason mumble to the point where we may need captions. But to be fair, in Kelly M’s case it is because of a severe hearing loss. She maintains that level so that she doesn’t go into shouting mode.

For me personally, Liz has become intolerable. I deleted Friday’s show from my DVR unwatched after reading a recap online because it was All About Liz. I’m sorry, I can’t the character. If this is true I just hope there is no recast. Bring back Lucky for a week to give her fans their HEA and let the rest of us get some peace from this nonsense.

well a jasam redux is as boring as a liaison redux with a new actor. Personally, I am a fan of Liz and RH, the fact that you are so obsessed with Jasam as if that is the only story on GH historically says a great deal. You may not like the character, but perhaps as a fan of GH you could appreciate that she is very popular with many fans, and they are upset. You would feel the same way if Kelly Monaco left. I like both actresses, even if I am not a fan of Sam the character. And i would not want her to leave for her fans. But that is how I roll.

Rebecca has no say in how her character is written. It seems to me that your beef is with the writers and their storylines. The writers will write for the Sam and Jason characters as suggested by the producers, and, again, this has nothing to do with RH. Her character “keeps showing up” because that’s how the writers are writing it. Whether RH leaves or not is completely irrelevant to the Jason and Sam characters, as most likely the writers would then throw other characters into the mix.
I am amazed that the last link to the Hardy legacy and the last contract nurse on a show about a hospital is fighting for her job! Becky is the consummate professional and one of the longest standing veterans on GH. They should stop at nothing to keep her especially after the JT fiasco! If Becky goes, I’m done and will follow her anywhere!
You framed the problem perfectly. Without Liz it’s another nail in the coffin of the hospital. And I suppose if she leaves we will never see Audrey again. Have never understood why the writers seem to hate writing for the Liz character. They always make her overly dependent on being with a man. It’s a broken record.
Wanted to gag at the Jason-saves-SAM, rushes-to-Sam’s-side scenes yesterday. I am BEYOND caring about this couple. I don’t even necessarily want Jason to go back to Liz. I just want the Sam Jason pairing to be OVER. Let them both find new romances.

and they should have made Buddig a legacy character, it was a stupid decision to make yet another new character. They are short on old families but there are lots of younger members they could have brought back. they have barely anyone at the hospital as pointed out, but we have innumerable Corinthos. This writing team and their executive team, Varni and Valentini, seem to have no idea what they are doing. At least Carlivati had a vision, and it worked for a while. What is their vision of the show? But at the very least, losing Becky is a sign that they have no clue what fans want. Even those who are not big fans of the character Liz know she is a legacy character, they know her storied history. She is the real face of GH these days for real fans, not Sonny, and Not Alexis, as much as Varni tries to make it the Corinthos hour.
Exactly. Nothing would have been more compelling than bringing Rebecca Budig in as Sarah Weber. She still could have been paired with Nikolas as they explored rekindling their high school romance. And she could have been a doctor, in need of money and still roped into the Cassadine ELQ thing, or not.

If Becky leaves then I’m leaving too. I watched this shows for Scrubs and Liz, with Robin and Patrick already gone, I was hanging on by a thread anyway. If Liz is no longer on the show, my last tie to the show is cut too. 20 years of watching the show over, which is kind of sad.
I hope GH and Rebecca Herbst reach an agreement. Elizabeth Webber is my favorite character and the only reason I still watch GH. If ABC is foolish enough to let this often overlooked actress go, I would be thrilled to watch her on whatever show is fortunate enough to sign her.

However, that’s probably not part of Days plan for the foreseeable future and if given proper writing, she’ll do great in either role.

It’s the other way around. Liz has been written terribly out of character to be a foil for JaSam. It’s been clear that Varni and Valentini have pushed these fan wars to the brink. Instead of writing character-driven stories it’s this lame Betty/Archie/Veronica mess. Liz has been thrown under the bus and her history with Jason was rewritten for the worse, while Sam’s history was rewritten for the better. I’m not a shipper of either couple so I’m coming from an objective place. I actually feel both women have carried Billy Miller/Jason for over a year at this point. It’s really sad. If I was Becky I would leave too. Liz is the last remaining member of the show’s founding family and they just don’t care. I really don’t know what has to happen for ABC to step in and actually care about what’s going on on that show.
I think it’s time for her to move on from GH. Her character has done some really rotten things that many of us find in redeemable.

I think RH does a great job, considering how her character has been written. It’s not necessary to get rid of an actress because the writing isn’t to your liking! That seems unreasonable.
I think its her time to move on. Her & lucky were the power couple for her but they ruined that. Her character has no one to be a part of. Steve & kelly fought hard to make jasam a powercouple, thats why so much love for the pair. Kelly makes it easy with billy or steve to make jasam great! I guess it might be time for becky to move on & find a new leading man to make her own powercouple.

I love Becky and she is as important to Elizabeth (as her original portrayer) as Liz is to the history and legacy of GH’s origins.
Becky is probably one of the least Diva like stars on GH as she is always humbled, appreciative and a team player so while GH pulled out all these strings (including purse strings) for stars and characters that are of no consequence to GH like Stafford, West, Howarth amongst a parade of new characters who are just random, unfamiliar faces and not the reasons I watch GH they have denied Becky what she has earned.
If Becky leaves, I suspect many will follow…she has a legion of fans and has been one of GH’s most Popular ladies for over a decade now. There is no way they can lose Herbst and not have it leave a very negative impact on the show. I support Becky in all her endeavors and I am sure she knows what is best for her and her family.
I cannot say I would be surprised if she walks away from negotiations…she has loved playing Elizabeth and they have really run the character into the ground and fans have bitched online for quite some time.
My thoughts on Days are none since I do not watch that show and have no intentions on doing so. I would rather see Becky on B&B, she loves fashion in real life and has made her own dresses so I think that show would suit her well.
I could also see Becky as a Chloe recast on The Young and The Restless, playing the feisty fashionista last played by Liz Hendrickson. It would be a real treat to see her and Jason Thompson play rather deliciously devilish exes Chloe and Billy and perhaps there would be a romance for Dylan and Chloe in the works with Steve Burton over there now.
Whatever the future holds for Becky on GH or not, She is a fan favorite and she always will be…no GH exit cannot ever undo what she’s meant to fans and to the show.

Honestly, I am shocked by this news. Rebecca Herbst has been utterly stunning this past year, portraying Elizabeth’s highs and lows to perfection, with emotionally deep material. She’s a phenomenal actress and I will be very frustrated if General Hospital lets her go. Her story right now is huge as Elizabeth deals with Jake’s emotional and physical injuries. I can’t imagine the show without Rebecca Herbst at all. She’s one of the best actresses in daytime and deserves every accolade I see her get in magazine letters and articles. She has chemistry with absolutely everyone and all of her pairings are gold. If she is let go–and I certainly hope not–I will definitely watch her on another show whether I already watch that show or not. She’s brilliant. General Hospital and ABC should not let her go.

The rumor I heard today, was that NBC wanted to cancel Days 2 years ago and replace it with a talk show. Update tonight I heard on the radio that Days might get picked up for 1 or 2 years. Hoping for the best.

I think it should be fairly obvious to anyone, and everyone, at this point that Rebecca Herbst and Liz have some if the most passionate and large fan bases on a soap period. She is one of the longest running characters on GH and has a massive fan base. Don’t underestimate that. It’s happened before and it ended with ABC looking idiotic and having to rehire her.

Factual correction (that doesn’t affect the gist of people’s points being made here): The edict to kill off Liz (actually, I thought they were going to have her have a nervous breakdown and get carted off permanently to the psych ward and not killed off, but I might misremember that) came from Brian Frons (who did not like the character or the actress, apparently), not from JFP (as somebody above said) and not from Guza—both of whom were guilty of some very bad decisions while they were at GH, but the Becky/Liz situation was not one of them.

Yeah. I personally believe these kind of stunts, along with her, let us say, dedicated (ahem) fan base, make it more and more unlikely another soap would pick her up. I’ll tell you I would drop dead of shock if she landed at Y & R. Not happening. They don’t need any part of that drama. MAYBE Days…
Days has in the past woefully misused big names in soaps so I don’t know if she would be better off there. But right now it sounds more like a gossip item planted out there to make ABC think they might lose her if they don’t snap her up now and give her whatever the issue is that is stalling talks with her. Personally I hope she stays with GH.
GH and Becky Herbst need to come to an agreement on her contract. Her character is enmeshed into several families. The Liz character’s children are also tied to a couple of families as well. Jake is in a front burner storyline, for starters. The other children can be in their own storylines as well.
