State Of The Daytime Emmys 2014 Chat! Michael Fairman, Nelson Branco & Gold Derby's Tom O'Neil Weigh-In!
The 41st annual Daytime Emmys are shortly upon us! The nominations will be announced on May 1st with the ceremony projected to be sometime in June!
This year, the acting competition in the major daytime drama categories is some of the toughest ever in a year filled with great performances. And the question remains as it does every year, will the most deserving performances rise to the top and end up scoring a nomination?
But what about the telecast itself? Once again heading into mid-April NATAS has yet to secure a television or online home in which to broadcast the ceremonies. After the last few years on HLN, does it look like the Daytime Emmys will ever be back on network television? Or, even be aired as they were in the past during the afternoon?
Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil presided over a state of the Daytime Emmys 2014 video hangout chat where he invited Soap Opera Uncensored’s Nelson Branco, and On-Air On-Soaps Michael Fairman for some insight and Intel into the current voting process, the nominees, and just why has it become so increasingly difficult for the academy to land a home for the telecast in recent years, and much more.

Susan Lucci Joins the Cast of Jonah Hill’s Movie ‘Outcome’
Look who will be part of the ensemble cast in motion picture and film star Jonah Hill’s new film project! That’s right, none other than Susan Lucci (ex-Erica, All My Children).
According to Deadline, the daytime television icon joins other notables including Laverne Cox and David Spade who have been added to the cast of Outcome. The film stars Keanu Reeves, Matt Bomer (ex-Ben, Guiding Light) and Cameron Diaz.
In Outcome, which is written by, and will be directed by Hill, the dark comedy centers around Reef (played by Reeves), a damaged Hollywood star who must dive into the dark depths of his past to confront his demons and make amends after he is extorted with a mysterious video clip from his past.

Soap fans know that following her iconic run as All My Children’s Erica Kane, Susan went on to be featured in Lifetime’s Devious Maids in the role of Genevieve Delatour. Since her Pine Valley days ended (when AMC was canceled in 2012), Susan has appeared in numerous shows and made numerous appearances. n December of 2023, Lucci was awarded the Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Outcome will debut on Apple and is an Apple Studios production. The film marks the latest collaboration for Hill and Apple Original Films, who are also developing a Grateful Dead biopic with Martin Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions, to be directed by Scorsese, with Hill starring in it and as one of the producers of the project, as well.

Jacob Young Shares Production Pic of Cast of His New Film Featuring Joan Collins and Nadia Bjorlin
Last month, during a livestream conversation on the Michael Fairman Channel, while promoting Jason Cook’s film, Four for Fun, and featuring soap notables Jacob Young (ex-AJ, AMC, ex-Lucky, GH, ex-Rick, B&B) and Brytni Sarpy (Y&R), Young revealed some intel on his upcoming movie project.
Jacob shared that he was set to direct, produce and star in a Agatha Christie-like murder mystery feature film, Murder Between Friends shooting in Prague.
The actor/director expressed, “I’m flying at the end of the March to Prague to direct, produce and star in a film with Joan Collins (ex-Dynasty). Nadia Bjorlin (ex-Chloe, Days of our Lives) is in it, and Toby Alexander Smith from Eastenders (ex-Gray Atkins). Plus, a couple of my Broadway friends and a very well known Czech actress (Hana Vagnerova). It’s very ‘Knives Out’ without having a hundred million dollars to shoot it, but still will be a lovely film nonetheless.”

Young is currently shooting the film’s principal photography abroad through April 17th.
Over the weekend, Jacob took to his Instagram to share a photo with the cast of the film where pictured is former Dynasty star, Joan Collins (ex-Alexis) and former Days of our Lives star, Nadia Bjorlin (ex-Chloe). In addition, former All My Children star, Trent Garrett (ex-Asher) is seen in director-mode kneeling.
Trent and Jacob are both co-directors of Murder Between Friends. Joan Collins shared the pic on her Instagram citing, “This was the #secret I posted about several weeks ago!”

Barbara Rush, ‘All My Children’ and ‘Peyton Place’ Actress, Dies at 97
Veteran Hollywood actress Barbara Rush, known to soap opera fans for her recurring roles on All My Children as Nola Orsini, and on Peyton Place where she played Marsha Russell, died at 97 on Sunday, March 31st.
Her passing was confirmed by Rush’s daughter, Fox News Channel senior correspondent Claudia Cowan. In a statement, Claudia shared, “My wonderful mother passed away peacefully at 5:28 this evening. I was with her this morning and know she was waiting for me to return home safely to transition. It’s fitting she chose to leave on Easter as it was one of her favorite holidays and now, of course, Easter will have a deeper significance for me and my family.”
Barbara had an extensive career in films and television that included roles in: It Came From Outer Space, The Goldbergs, 7th Heaven, The Young Philadelphians, Robin and the 7 Hoods, The Young Lions, Batman (TV series ), The Bionic Woman, Fantasy Island, Love Boat, Murder, She Wrote and so many others.

From 1968 to 1969, she starred in 75 episodes on Peyton Place. In 1980, Rush also appeared in NBC’s primetime soap opera, Flamingo Road taking on the role of Eudora Weldon, who’s adoptive daughter was played by Morgan Fairchild.
Then, in 1992, she was cast as All My Children’s Nola Orsini. In the storyline, Tad (Michael E. Knight) had amnesia and washed ashore from a river and wides up in California. He gets a job at Orsini Vineyards, where the owner, Nola Orsini (Rush), says that he is the spitting image of her missing son, Ted Orsini, who was kidnapped as a child, and insists Tad is him. She takes him in, trains him to run the vineyards, and makes him her heir, completely convinced he is her lost son, and the story unspooled from there.
Rush is survived by her two children the aforementioned Claudia Cowan, and Christopher Hunter.

The star power is gone from the Daytime Emmys. I mean you have the talk show hosts and game show hosts, but who honestly cares about them? Who cares about Giada DeLaurentis and what she’s wearing on the red carpet? I was appalled that HLN blatantly omitted soap actors from their red carpet coverage. Soap actors are the star power, just as prime-time actors.
So true. The only reason Giada has ascended to this acclaimed level of wealth and popularity is because of her very famous grandparents. …..Dino De Laurentis and Silvana Mangano, equal to Ava Gardner to the Italians. As my nonna says, this was one of Italy’s power couple, back in the day.
It is a shame that soap stars do not receive the same respect and “reverence”. It seems the the soap actor is the unsung hero…sad.

So true….Giada’s only real claim to fame that she has achieved on her own is from the constant display of her ample cleavage!!!! You are right about Giada’s cleavage. My nonna has a few choice words for her also…but I won’t say…lol. I have the coolest grandmother ever, and I am very lucky that she is still young enough to go shopping etc. with me without tiring…mostly, she’s very generous..lol…I love her to death…

Nonna knows!!!! Another celebrity chef that has lowered cooking shows to the level of suggestive “food porn” is Nigella Lawson! (Just cover yourself up and give us “delizioso” recipes, that all I ask! LOL…) As for your Easter holiday, it sounded wonderful….I love everything Italian—-the culture, language, fashion and of course, the cuisine!!!! (AND “Don Matteo!” Do you ever watch that show? It is excellent…subtitles and all…..) But I digress….your gran must be one great lady, you are so lucky to have her, not to mention relatives in Toronto and a place in Connecticut! I am very familiar with Don Matteo, Terence Hill…née Girotti. Although I only caught a few episodes, my relatives in Toronto and New York are avid fans of the priest/detective. You must visit Italy …the Umbrian countryside is gorgeous. And, the Calabrian coast…let’s not forget that !!
Back to the Daytime Emmys….I really do not like some of the characters, but I must admit, many of them deserve an Emmy. There’s Luke who plays the lascivious, obscene, feely-touchy , dirty old man with great flair…lol…..as if he were born for the part . And, I am very well aware how you feel about Ava. I share those feelings. But, she can act. We must separate the person from the persona. I also think that Dool’s Sweeney and Scott are doing a phenomenal job all around…even creepy, and obnoxious Nick Fallon. ….hope the best woman/man/it wins……”In bocca al lupo”…. A very popular Italian adage which is the quasi equivalent of “break a leg”, not literally translated as such, but having the same connotation…am I blabbering? Mr. Fairman, will you post this?…..I won’t be around for much longer…I love what you do, sir. Ciao.
Nor do I, FAS….although it seems that the more outre’ cooking stars are on the cable networks…that’s where everything is based upon the old adage that “sex sells”…just look at those disgusting reality shows! At least on the PBS programs the food is the focus, like with Lidia Bastianich, Mary Ann Esposito, Nick Stellino, et al….that’s where I park my chef’s hat and spatula! LOL… Anyway, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you safe travels and wonderful adventures during your educational journey. It has been a true pleasure and privilege to converse with you here, and I so appreciate your kind words and sentiments. I’m only sorry our time to relate our respective views has been so brief….you (as well as your wise and witty observations….) will be missed! I know you will be preoccupied with your studies and new surroundings, but I hope you will occasionally check into the website to let us know how you are doing, not to mention to see what is transpiring on GH while you are away from the continent. (I suppose you can always download the odd episode from ABC even in Europe, time permitting????) At any rate, it has been a sheer delight to share our thoughts and hear about your remarkable “Nonna.” She is an inspiration for women of all ages! I haven’t been able to watch since the Daytime Emmys were switched from ABC and CBS. It’s too bad; I used to enjoy watching the event.

Not a fan of Nelson personally or his obvious bias towards certain actors, but I do enjoy his thoughts on the genre and the Emmys. Thought Michael added a lot too. Good conversation and enjoyed the insights both brought to the table.
To the point though that all the same actors are nominated repeatedly, I just think if they deserve it, they’ve earned their spot. A Peter Bergman may have umpteen noms and wins under his belt, but fine work is fine work. It wouldn’t be fair to exclude them just because they’ve been around the block a few time, any more than saying this person should be nominated simply because they’re never nominated.

Nelson bias is so transparent and after seeing some of the negative and nasty stuff he’s said over the years I would never take his opinion on who should win seriously. For me having watched the performances the best actress nod should go to Eileen Davidson or Heather Tom – both consistently brilliant actresses. Especially Heather Tom who has absolute garbage written for her thanks to Brad Bells’ favoritsm for KKL, but always manages to make that garbage into pure gold magic. The guys? I really think it should be Jason Thompson but that category has always been a joke. Who deserves it never happens.

No one from Y&R Deserves an Emmy…with the exception of Stafford, Muhney, and Miller. Sadly they are GONE. On the other hand, there are plenty of the best fruit on GH waiting to be plucked. Kathleen Gati, for instance. Just sayin’.
I lost interest in the daytime emmys years ago when they became predictable and boring…good or not, mostly the same actors get nominated every year…Peter B. or Tony G. for example…they are terrific actors and perhaps daytimes greatest but its like why they are repeating last years show…there is nothing new about the daytime emmys and thats why(plus there is only 4 soaps now anyway) not many tune in to watch anymore…jmho!!!

Agree that it is probably tough to choose a Best Show from a limited clip but, overall I think Days out-shined General Hospital. GH is all over the place and just based upon consistency Days had it pulled together more. Not that every story line was stellar or all characters are interesting (Jennifer/Daniel or this whole Jordan “who is she …blah, blah mess).
I dvr both shows and 9 out of 10 times I end up hitting fast forward through most of GH. The biggest problem for me with GH is lack of consistency. Not everything is going to be great but they (FV & RC) seem to have wonderful strengths or dismal failures…no happy medium.
On the other hand, Days usually has decent stories across the board, IMO. Yes, as mentioned there are clunkers but they seem less in number than with GH. I also think because they tape so far ahead that in some cases it is more difficult to pull the plug or change direction than with GH.
I stopped watching Y&R because the writing was just terrible and the focus had shifted to JFP’s pets. Sorry, but I don’t find Dylan and intriguing character regardless of whom he is paired with or his sudden relatives are said to be. And, the character of Victor has become so vile that I cannot stomach him. It is fine to have villains – GL had Roger or Alan who were not always the nicest guys but most of the time they were not consistently evil to the point of wanting to turn the show off. Maybe because they were written with some humor attached. Victor is just plain miserable. On Days, Kate is not always doing “nice” things but there is more dimension to her and she is still palatable.
I don’t watch B&B although I do read the synopsis in SOD and it seems it is always Liam, Hope, Wyatt….over & over again. They have some good characters & actors that deserve more story. I think Donna could be used more. When I did watch the show I enjoyed her pairing with Eric.
I agree with you, Chaz about General Hospital. Characters and storylines appear lost in the shuffle because there are too many recurring characters on the show. We lose interest, not seeing some of our favorites for a week plus. Then, the storyline is wrapped up too quickly with no real closure. A lot seems to happen off-air, in which we are only updated by other characters during a conversation. Days of Our Lives has improved a lot. I absolutely cannot wait until Eileen Davidson returns as Kristen!
I think it shouldn’t be televised. People are missing noms-Michael Muhney and Debbie Morgan-yes Debbie may have omitted herself, but I just think the fans should be able to vote their favs in to these kind of Emmys. The acting is not as good as it once was, neither are the storylines. The serials are dying out -and I blame the directors, execs, writers and marketing/PR teams for that for lack of creativity and for the merry go around of recycled storylines….at least give it a decade or 2 before starting over with the same script, hire better stunt crew, get better lighting, angle movements and transitions.
Enjoyed the podcast thought NB’s comment about the Usual Suspects was so true. I am biased I hope SC gets a nomination I am tired of MW & HT and Jess Walton should have been in Supporting. Also agreed with the comments about people seem to think if you are not screaming and crying you are not acting. Heather Tom does too much of that for my taste. As far as best actor if I was judging probably PB & JT would be the two to beat!
These awards were originally designed to recognize outstanding work determined by one peers, but televising them has turned all award shows into a competition and a popularity contest, where the real winners are those who make money of airing them.
Perhaps if they went back to a private affair where participants could enjoy a nice meal and a lay back show without trying to be the Oscars in style ie– the red carpet, maybe it would find it is roots and be about the work and not the personalities or network hype.
Also could someone explain to me how they determine what is a lead and what is a supporting performance in a soap opera? Is the number of shows you appear in one year? Your billing in the cast? The role you played in a specific story line? How long you’ve been on the show? Thanks.
Michael muhney is no longer on the Young and the Restless but he was the best actor on the Young and the Restless ever had. Even though Eric Bearden thinks he’s the best thing that ever happened to soaps. I would like to see Michael Muhney nominated for best actor! I believe there are many Y&R in-game that feel the same way.
Michael Muhney was a better actor than Billy Miller and every other male on the show. He brought the show back alive. He nailed the character of Adam and no one else will ever be able to take his place as Adam. He should not have a problem getting a nighttime gig or even big screen. I am so tired of brothers sleeping behind eachother on the show. Meaning Jack and Billy. First Billy lays with Kelley and now Jack. Please make it stop! Please!

I, too, am tired of the usual suspects being nominated and love it when new blood get their due. The Daytime Emmys have always gotten a bad wrap and the producers or TPTB do nothing to educate possible recruits in their production each year. The clips chosen for best performances are generally out of context and cringe worthy. That for myself, as a soap viewer, I embarrassed to watch. No wonder no one tunes in.
The politics of the daytime Emmys still needs to be continually addressed. I enjoyed this conversation for that reason. I for one tune in to watch the actors from daytime NOT to watch Vanessa Williams sing and plug her latest project. I still can’t believe she got more air time than GL’s swan song.
If putting the telecast back on during daytime hours get the much needed viewership I am all for it. I liked it when ABC, CBS and NBC rotated airing the Emmys. Last year I was not able to watch it at all on HLN because my Cable carrier no longer provided the channel. The sane will happen if the predicted TVGN takes the reigns this year.
Soaps Operas are a story telling medium and everyone loves a good story. Thus there will always be soap operas. I do believe we will be watching more online in the future. The efforts to bring AMC and OLTL back online was commendable. Too bad Prospect Park didn’t have the bank roll to continue these beloved shows.
