The Kassie DePaiva Interview – Days of our Lives

After years of playing sassy Blair Cramer on One Life to Live, daytime favorite Kassie DePaiva is turning the page on her soap career with her new role as Eve Donovan on Days of our Lives!  Now while former hooker, songstress, and bad girl Eve was last played in Salem decades ago by Charlotte Ross, when the dust had settled, it was Kassie who now gets to bring the troubled gal to life, and let’s face it …”bad girl” and “songstress” were right up DePaiva’s soap arsenal and resume!

On-Air On-Soaps visited the set of the NBC soap this week to sit down with Kassie to get her thoughts on her new soap digs, and how it all came about after Prospect Park’s online reboot of One Life to Live ended after only one season, and Kassie’s guest star turns on General Hospital suddenly came to a halt.  With a beloved fan base with her every step of the way, and who are excited to see Kassie again on their daytime television screens, DePaiva is making the transition to working on the west coast while her husband James DePaiva (Ex-Max, OLTL) and their son are still back east.

Now in Salem, as Eve begins to spin her web at her arch-nemesis Jennifer Horton (Melissa Reeves), it’s only a matter of time before her plans go bust … or will they?  And what about her relationship with pseudo-sis Theresa (Jen Lilley), and daughter Paige (True O’Brien)? Does Eve love these girls as family, or will she ultimately use them in her plans for revenge on those who wronged her in Salem?  And then there are the men of the town:  Dr. Daniel Jonas (Shawn Christian), JJ Deveraux (Casey Moss), and a potential host of others that have already crossed paths with tornado Eve!  Here’s what Kassie shared with us in this funny, touching, and informative chat.  Yes, it is true … this talented beauty has more than one soap life to live!

MICHAEL:

Before we move on to the here and now with DAYS, I just want to take a step back and ask you, do you feel now you have closure on your time as Blair on One Life to Live?   Where are you at with it … as the entire situation was very disappointing to the cast and the fans of the series?

KASSIE:

Courtesy/ABC

I think the One Life to Live fans are still holding out hope, and I know that you have always been OLTL fan, and I have been too.  I read a tweet the other day where someone said, “They didn’t cancel OLTL they just postponed it.”  So they are still hanging on and thinking, “Maybe?”  I don’t try to think about it anymore.  I am just very happy that One Life was represented at this year’s Daytime Emmys and won two awards.  I think it gave closure to at least this rendition of the show.  And for me, it was great to not only represent this show that I am on now, but to celebrate the years of hard work and the people that tried to make One Life to Live happen again with the reboot of the show.  I love soaps, and I am so grateful that I am still getting to play in it.

MICHAEL:

So One Life comes to an imperfect conclusion for many, and now you find yourself as an actress looking for work.

KASSIE:

Being that I am living back east, there are no soaps there anymore.  Granted there are online soaps and there is nothing wrong with that, and it’s great to keep the genre alive the best way we can.  But the four big ones are now out here in Los Angeles.  I was given the opportunity to perform on General Hospital.  I was just not given the opportunity to stay, and that was sad.

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/Twitter

It was sad!  Many of the Blair and Kassie DePaiva fans felt you should have continued to be in the mix at GH and it didn’t happen.  Were you disappointed?

KASSIE:

Yes.  It didn’t happen and there is nothing I can do about it.  I can say, “boo-hoo” and have a little pity party, but that’s not going to do anything, and the decision on that was completely out of my hands.  Of course, I would have loved to have been on GH bitch-slapping Carly (Laura Wright) and taking Todd (Roger Howarth) down! (Laughs)  It would have been fun, and my former on-screen daughter was there in Kristen Alderson (Kiki), but then the whole situation with Prospect Park and ABC happened.  That shifted everybody’s take on what should happen, and what will happen. At that point I thought, I am not going to think of myself as a soap actress anymore.  I am going to move on and do some primetime television work, and then … I got a phone call out of the blue!

MICHAEL:

So now we come to Days of our Lives!  Were you pitched for the role of Eve Donovan?

KASSIE:

Not as far as I knew!  But then I got a call from my agent saying that I had been pitched for this part of Eve.  And it was December 18th and it was on the day that Blair had debuted on OLTL, so it was crazy.   I remember talking about that with my husband.  He said, “Yeah, you have had a good run, Kassie!”  Then I got the call from DAYS asking me if I would be interested in doing this, and everything was really hush-hush.  I am crazy about this show!  They tape so far in advance, and so for me to make this move from New York to come to L.A, I had to make some phone calls! (Laughs)   It all happened very fast.  I had to talk in code, and I was dying to tell the world!  At that point, I was writing a blog every single week.  I couldn’t say anything, because anything I said in articles was written about.  I kind of had to talk about the weather for four months until the announcement was made! (Laughs)  Then, I could shout it on the mountain tops.

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/NBC

When were you told about Eve’s rather tawdry history and back-story?  (Laughs)

KASSIE:

Two days later I had a phone conversation with DAYS Co-EP Greg Meng.  They didn’t give me a last name and I said, “O.K.”   Greg told me the character was established 20 years ago by another actress and the character is a bad girl.  Then Chris Whitesell (DAYS co-head writer) wrote a breakdown of some of the high points and low points of the character!  (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

You mean, when she was a hooker?  (Laughs)

KASSIE:

Excuse me … a prostitute … and a former singer? (Laughs)  I think I can play that!  I started taping at the end of January and started airing in June!  The craziest part is to be connected to the character and not have anyone to ground her.  On One Life to Live, I always had Todd to ground Blair.  I did not really have a love interest on DAYS, but having an old marriage to Jack or Frankie, and then when you get to town you look at the canvas here and I had characters coming up to me going, “You know you ran over my daughter!” and, “You made me lose a baby!”   I go, “I did? Well, maybe she is evolving?”  Ah, no.  She is not evolved!  Don’t expect her to make any healthy choice or decision.  She is really broken, but she does love her daughter to the nth degree.

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/NBC

And by the way, who is the father of Eve’s daughter, Paige (True O’Brien)?  Do you know?

KASSIE:

I don’t know!  It could be you!  I don’t know if that will be addressed, and even I truly don’t know.  I think the writing for Eve is fantastic. Granted I am four months ahead of what you guys are watching, but I can tell you it’s a bumpy ride.   But hold on!

MICHAEL:

Now you come to DAYS and your new on-screen nemesis is Melissa Reeves (Jennifer)!  Had you known Melissa previously?

KASSIE:

I had met her.  I know her husband Scott, but am I the luckiest girl in the world?  I love Missy Reeves so much.  What is really refreshing and wonderful is it’s similar to the relationship I had with Florencia Lozano (Tea) on OLTL.  It takes a good friendship to be enemies.  It’s been easy breezy since the moment I walked in here.

MICHAEL:

The chip on Eve’s shoulder that she is carrying around with her; is it mainly that she is still pissed that Frankie fell in love with Jennifer?

KASSIE:

Eve’s gripe with Jennifer is that she got everything handed to her.  To Eve: Jen was born with a silver spoon, and Eve has had to dig her way out with a shovel with everything in her life.  She has a chip on her shoulder about everything.  Eve feels she has been slighted, and she feels she is entitled to everything everybody else has.

MICHAEL:

Now on to hottie Dr. Daniel (Shawn Christian)!  Is Eve still going to try to get her claws into him to stick into Jennifer?

KASSIE:

As far as hottie Dr. Daniel, she thought she would be able to manipulate him a little easier.  But he blew her off because of the situation with Theresa (Jen Lilley) and everything with Jennifer.  So for her it’s like, “What-ever!”  But, I don’t know if that is completely over.

MICHAEL:

So here is what I think: I think Eve and JJ (Casey Moss) are going to end up in bed together, because that would really hurt Jennifer!  I saw the spark in one scene between the two of them recently!

KASSIE:

Courtesy/NBC

I think that would be something that would completely catch Kassie off-guard!  If I have to play it, I would say to Casey: “Now, I am not your mother or your grandmother!”  (Laughs)  I think the next storyline then would be “Who Killed Eve?”  (Laughs)  It’s an interesting twist you got there, Michael Fairman.  I hope you don’t go tell the writers so I can keep my integrity… a little bit longer! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Now wait!  Didn’t Blair ever sleep with a younger man ever on One Life?

KASSIE:

Dorian (Robin Strasser) did!  She slept with Joey (Nathan Fillion)!

MICHAEL:

Yup, that is what I am seeing here at DAYS!  Call Robin Strasser and ask her some tips on how she dealt with the sex scenes with Nathan Fillion! (Laughs)

KASSIE:

Well…. maybe I can just ask Nathan Fillion!  (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Speaking of Casey Moss … how is he to work with?

KASSIE:

Casey is fabulous.  I think he and True O’Brien are the next super couple on the show.  I think there is something pure, sweet and innocent about their romance.  JJ is a bad boy really trying to make good, and there is going to be that struggle.  I am once again equating it to One Life to Live and Starr and Cole’s romance.  Blair of course, hated Cole because he was Marty’s son, but she never slept with Cole … so shut up! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

And what do you think about True O’Brien being cast as your on-screen daughter in Salem?

KASSIE:

She is delightful and honest in her choices.  And because the character is so sweet, she is very easy to manipulate!  (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/NBC

Who of the men in Salem, would you love a chance to work with, or for Eve to be with?

KASSIE:

They are all beautiful, and all of them great actors too. Greg Vaughan (Eric), I have had a subliminal crush on him forever. Eric Martsolf (Brady) is such a talented actor, and Galen Gering (Rafe) is so funny, and Daniel Cosgrove (Aiden) is another funny guy.  But they are all taken, so Eve is going to have to steal one of the guys away!

MICHAEL:

So where does Eve’s singing come in to play?

KASSIE:

Well, she has got nodules. (Laughs)  It is earth shattering to her, because it’s part of her identity.  So for Eve, if she could just make enough money to get those nodules taken care of, she can get back to singing and make enough money to send her daughter back to Stanford, and then everything will be fine.  And right now, Eve wants to get back to her glory days of singing, and so she has that connection with JJ, who is also musical.

MICHAEL:

Hopefully, Eve’s prostitution past will come back to haunt her!

KASSIE:

I am thinking her next move is to be a madam like Llanview’s Renee Divine (Patricia Elliot)! (Laughs)  Maybe she would be madam until she makes enough money to send her daughter to school.  I have no idea.

MICHAEL:

I am thinking they could make her the hooker with the heart of gold like Karen Wolek was as played by Judith Light back in the day on One Life only … a much older version? (Laughs)

KASSIE:

Courtesy/Pinterest

But you know, that only works when your 30!  When you’re 50 … that’s pathetic and that’s just sad. (Laughs)  I would like to think I am 30, and Eve probably thinks she is 30, but she needs to look in the mirror.  She is a little long in the tooth.  Now Theresa could get away with it.

MICHAEL:

How would you describe the relationship between Eve and Theresa?

KASSIE:

Don’t you just love Jen Lilley?  She is fearless and her comedic timing is perfect.  I think Eve and Theresa are similar.  It’s just not as attractive on Eve, as it is on Theresa.

MICHAEL:

Does Eve love and care about Theresa?

KASSIE:

She is her pseudo-sister.  I think Eve loves Theresa as much as she can love anybody.  But she would still manipulate and use her.  I think what it really comes down to it, she doesn’t want to see her sister suffer, because also when it comes down to it, who else does Eve have?  Nobody!  I have been here for four months and I have been bitch-slapped three times! And last week I was literally thrown out of two places.   I remember doing the slap scenes recently with Kate Mansi (Abigail).  We had to do it in seven takes, because she is much shorter than me!  It was funny! (Laughs)  Last week, Theresa through me out, and Jennifer through me out too!

MICHAEL:

Many fans made remarks that there is an age difference between the original Eve, Charlotte Ross and you.  What do you think about what they said … and does that bother you at all?

KASSIE:

They are right!  She is younger than I am!  If they could have gotten Charlotte Ross, that would have been perfect, because Charlotte Ross was Eve.  But that didn’t happen because she got a job on ABC’s Nashville, which was great for her, but it was even better for me! (Laughs)  Did I not think, “Well gosh; I am a little bit older than her?”   I told my husband, “I don’t know.  Charlotte is beautiful and young.”  Jimmy said, “Honey, the writers know your work. They hired you because they know what you can do.”  So, I just had to assure them that they have me to do whatever they want me to do, and they have the story they want to tell.  They hope I can pull it off, and I hope that I am doing that, and giving the character of Eve the justice she deserves.  You know Eve is a bit over the top.  I feel like I am playing a character role, so it’s not like I am playing a leading lady.   It’s the best of both worlds.  They brought me on to be this aging singer/prostitute that’s kind of sad, but fun to watch.  But she is also funny, powerful and broken.  It’s great.

MICHAEL:

Do you think it was DAYS co-head writer Chris Whitesell, who wrote at one point wrote and knew of your work from OLTL, was integral in having your name brought up for the part of Eve?

KASSIE:

I think Lorraine Broderick (DAYS writer) was important to the choice of having me, and suggesting me for the role of Eve.  I don’t know her that well, but I think it was her.  And then after my name was mentioned, people went, “Oh, yeah!  She can do that!”  And with Eve, she is not as one-dimensional as she might come off.   You have to be able to play the bitchiness, the brokenness, the slutiness, and the wackadoodleness!  (Laughs)

Courtesy/ABC

MICHAEL:

Have you stayed in touch with Roger Howarth?  Have you ever watched him as Franco on GH?

KASSIE:

I haven’t seen him.  You know that all happened when they made Roger’s character Franco, and when they decided not to invite me back. so it was sad for me.  And One Life to Live … I missed it terribly.   I felt if I couldn’t be a part of GH and I couldn’t contribute, then I needed to turn the page on that, and OLTL.  And as for One Life to Live, I will never, ever forget all the things that happened there, but now it is time to start a new chapter.

MICHAEL:

How are things working out with you being in LA, and your husband James DePaiva and your son being back east?

KASSIE:

I see Jimmy every 12 to 14 days which is not terrible.  We FaceTime three times a day.   It’s completely doable.  Our biggest concern was our son, who is starting his senior year at Fordham grad.  He is old enough now where I don’t worry about him.  He has become a great young adult.   Now he doesn’t have separation anxiety … but I do!   I miss him!  I miss my guys!  When I first got to DAYS, I walked in and things were happening so fast.   I got this apartment, and all of a sudden I burst into tears.  I called Jimmy and I was FaceTiming him with him.  I was sobbing and I said, “Come get me.  I don’t want to be here!”  Jimmy said “Kassie, I don’t think I have ever seen you like this!”  I said, “I feel like I am going backwards to L.A in a little one bedroom apartment! And I miss my family!”  Now at this point, I don’t even know what I am doing.  I haven’t even met anyone over at DAYS yet that I am going to work with!  And my husband says, “Tomorrow, you are going to go to the studio and everything is going to be fine.”   So then when I got to DAYS everyone was fabulous!  They are kind of reminiscent of the early days of OLTL.  It felt like it did when I was hanging out with Tuc Watkins, Nathan Fillion, Chris Douglas, Bob Krimmer, and Bob Woods and the gals there all over again!

MICHAEL:

What can we expect in the coming weeks from Eve?  Will her nodules be fixed? (Laughs)

KASSIE:

Eve is going to have to get a new doctor, because of this whole situation with Daniel.  So she finds a doctor, and things are looking really good with the nodules, but this lawsuit with Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) is going to get ugly, which is over the royalties of Jack’s book where in the annulment with Eve, she is entitled to the long form royalties.   And Jennifer, being the bitch that she is from Eve’s POV; let’s say it’s not going to be pretty!  But it’s fun, and I seriously have laughed out loud.  With what has happened with Abigail (Kate Mansi) now, and her affair with EJ (James Scott) being exposed, that just gives Eve more fuel for the fire.

MICHAEL:

Lastly and most importantly, can we tell your long time fans you are happy?

KASSIE:

Yes, as the Pharrell Williams song says, “I’m happy”.  Honestly, I am extremely happy and more than anything extremely grateful.  I hope the One Life to Live fans will follow me over here to Salem, because it’s a nice place to live.

Class act.

Yep.

Followed her over to Salem as soon as I heard she would be on, and I love the show. It feels much more like OLTL than GH does. I think it’s all working out for Kassie.

And, I’m still holding out for a OLTL resurrection on ABC.

Thank you for coming over to Days! I hope One Life comes back for you and the fans!

I miss Blair and the gang. Happy Kassie has a new role. I think I am one that always holds a little hope for OLTL

I’m a new Days of Our Lives fan and it’s all due to Kassie! Love her so much. I do love the show, and I’ve never watched any network soap other than ABC until now. I love the smaller cast, the stories, the rapid pace. It’s a good show even when Eve has a day off. Now if they would just hire Erika Slezak…or Robin Strasser.

I love the show too, it’s the only soap I currently watch and it’s great. Lots of fun, actual conversations that are longer than 30 seconds, nice small excellent cast. REALLY enjoying it.

Couldn’t agree more. Really would love to see Erika and Robin working, miss them terribly!

Erika would be perfect as Laura Horton, Jens mom,…Erika does resemble Susan Flannery who played Laura in the 60s to mid 70s…Robin Strasser could play Lee Dumonde(spelling) who was once married to Julies husband Doug and was involved with Stephano Dimera in the early 80s…she’d be perfect for that role originally played by the late Brenda Benete(again spelling?) or Robin could play Linda Anderson who was once Maggie’s nemisis and the biological mother of Maggie’s stepdaughter Melissa(currently not seen)…Linda, a villian, was originally played by the late Margaret Mason and was in love with Maggie’s first husband Mickey Horton…Linda was played briefly by Elaine Princi in the 1980s but years early Elaine played Dr. Kate Winograd who had an affair with the married Bill Horton whose wife was Laura… and Bill and Laura are the parents of Jen and her unseen brother Micheal. Bill is the father of Lucas from his affair with Kate Roberts (off screen) years ago…Kate R. and Kate W., arent the same Kate or at least its never been explained if they were the same Kate or two different Kates Bill has had an affair with but Kate Roberts who is currently on the show has never revealed any medical knowledge as far as i recall so my guess is that Kate W. and Kate R. are two different Kates!!! Hope i didnt go on too much…lol

jimh, you could never go on too much! BTW, I thought the same thing about RS as Linda Anderson. Shortly after I started watching DAYS, EP joined as Madame X, whom was revealed to be Linda Anderson. I do know the history of Lee Dumonde and the tragic loss of her performer….Brenda Bennit (my spelling too?). Brenda was married to Bill Bixby ( The Incredible Hulk TV series) and they divorced and their only child lost his life… She could not cope and committed suicide. I miss her, yet, I’ve never seen but a couple minutes of her on YouTube.

It is a really good show! And hiring Erika Slezak or Robin Strasser would be a dream come true!

Love the idea, Jim. Erika Slezak is a perfect choice and Salem needs a new strong powerhouse of matriarch. I’d love to see her go toe to toe with Kate.

Kassie, age is irrelevant when it comes to you–you’re seemingly not affected by the ravages of time. I don’t know if it’s because Charlotte Ross might look a tad old for her age or because you look young for yours, but to me you look to be in the same age range.
I have tuned into Days just to watch Kassie and I am glad I did. Because of Kassie I may have developed a new soap addiction which will replace the last two soap addictions I overcame. Darn it, Kassie!
Watching her interact with the other female characters is like watching Godzilla vs Bambi. And the good thing is that the normally somnolent actors like Melissa Reeves end up upping their game while in scenes with her. Days was smart to snag her and GH was incredibly stupid to let her go.

really nice post

#1. that you’ve started watching DAYS… It’s the best of the 4
#2. that DAYS was smart to hire Kassie Depaiva. she’s magnificent a delight
#3. A new soap addiction… and it’s ta-da !!!! Days of OUR Lives ! YES

I love the fait accompli with aplomb ( I celebrate this)… that Eve is godzilla to Jenns Bambi… I so hope this… why not… this is a soap… the erstwhile… innocent penchant for do good is wearying… like the DiMera’s perhaps less than.. but… devious… the Donovan sisters prevail in my book

DAYS is so deserving of recognition

I am so happy that Kassie is back on my Tv screen.

Sweet, funny, gorgeous, honest, TALENTED and so down to earth…that is Kassie, and why her fans just love her to death.
Great interview, MF, thank you! I had been soapless since OLTL ceased production, started watching DAYS when Kassie’s Eve debuted. Enjoying her role so much.

I really do celebrate the dynamics and mayhem… intrigue allure she captivates with the DAYS cast

every one… from : JJ… to Paige… to Theresa… to, of course… the dimwit… Jenn… to Daniel… to Abs… and Maggie

it’s an ongoing treat to celebrate her addition to Salem’ites

thank you DAYS and Kassie DePaiva… for stretching your wings and acting chops to endear the audience to feast

I watched Days but, now that Kassie is on it I love and I love her. She is doing an excellent job with her new character . I knew she would because she is a super star. Can’t wait to see more and the new story lines.

you have me gushing at “superstar”

I recently come to know her… and kudos to celebrating her

per your : “…Can’t wait to see more and the new story lines.”

couldn’t you see her with Justin… Humm? yes … for drama stellar… Adrienne will bring it

as JimH has said… what if her real life husband joined the show as Peter Blake… woah… hush my lips … i’m entranced by this coupling… the DiMeras are alive… with James DePaiva

Stefano wouldnt know what to do with himself if she traipsed throughout the manse

she belongs

I’ve been so excited to see what Kassie would bring to DAYS. I’m very familiar with Kassie’s work, and I love DAYS, so the combination of the two was definitely intriguing. 5 months felt like an eternity! So far I haven’t been disappointed. It’s nice to read comments from ABCers who have made the switch and are liking what they’re seeing, not just with Kassie but are complimentary of the show in general. That right there makes the move to hire her so smart. And unlike GH, DAYS doesn’t hire with a) no purpose or b) a purpose that only lasts 3 months. DAYS has long term plans for Eve which should make those new fans stick around that much longer and develop loyalties beyond the one actress. GH may hire veterans and big names galore, but DAYS is the show that give more attention to a continuation of growth and story to make the best use out of people.

“…I love DAYS, so the combination of the two was definitely”

the coup of the year… a combustible… match… a delighted feast

I beam LOL rector boom shake

give it all

shes so ON

you’re simply one of the best posters :

.”… DAYS has long term plans for Eve which should make those new fans stick around that much longer and develop loyalties beyond the one actress. ”

DAYS of OUR Lives continuity gells pulls throws you in a mist of quagmire

the cast deliver applomb and cohesive direct forwards our span … decades plus show of all shows… kudos to the delight of daytime

fan salute for how delish Salem invites

Kassie is doing an excellent job as Eve on DAYS!!!

Nice interview! Kassie’s a great addition to Days. And now granted I started watching days after Eve was there and gone, I think she’s doing a wonderful job. And if anything I’m glad Charlotte couldn’t return. Let’s be honest, she would have come and left while Kassie really loves this medium you can tell.

I only saw her briefly as Blair in the online version but I really liked her there as well.

I’m undecided about the JJ/Eve possibilities lol. It’s so twisted.

Great interview Cassie. But her character has to prop awful, self-righteous and boring characters like Jennifer, Daniel and their horrible children (i refuse to think these gals are Jack’s children..no way). Moreover the writing on this show is so black and white..thankfully Cassie tries to give layers to the character but when the writing is weak it is weak..
I understand her sadness over GH but she is not bitter, just honest..i like that..class act.
And Cassie you are as much beautiful as Charlotte Ross..and maybe older but not by much..and the ‘young’ obsession..stop it Hollyweird..everybody is aging..it is the way of life.
I am 25 years old right now and i know i will become older..doesn’t make me ‘less’ than younger folks..who by the way will become older too.

What a great interview! KDP has fit in seamlessly on DOOL and that is not easy to do, especially when you’re playing a character with alot of history on the show and whom we haven’t seen in more than 20 years. I appreciate her honesty about her fears about taking on the role, but she’s been stellar so far. I’m very happy for her. I also admire her for how she’s handled GH. She could be more bitter about how the story was written for Roger Howarth and Kristen Aldersen which didn’t include her more than for an episode here and there, but she’s moved on and good for her. Same with the online version of OLTL. She has to look to the future, though she knows that some fans haven’t given up hope. Personally I’m not sure if AMC or OLTL can ever come back at this point but there’s nothing wrong with hope as long as you don’t drown in it, and Kassie has turned the page for now. I’m loving the best soap recast of 2014, and maybe for the past few years, too.

gavel

“…KDP has fit in seamlessly on DOOL”

she is such a welcome respite… inasmuch as I soapbox… DAYS… Eve has showcased unrelenting must watch… her at ease dynamic is powerhouse

she weaves her presence force

LOL… I’m so happy with her

I wish Andrew Trischitta would have gotten the role of JJ he would have been a better fit. I think Casey is a good actor but he has no chemistry with True and he looks too old for the role. He should be playing Ben Kate Mansi’s boyfriend.

Happy with current JJ….not sure about AT.

Casey is supposed to be 18 years old he looks way too old to play that.

He’s 20, but I agree, he looks older.

Kassie is doing a fantastic job as Eve Donovan, and I enjoy her portrayal of Eve much more than I ever did as her with Blair.

thats saying something…. I never watched OLTL

wow.. fans of …. : are rabid… and deservedly so… I give that

it’s a pleasure to share KDP…

thank you Kass… am loving Eve so much

Laura Horton had mental problems so we KNOW Erika S could ace that role and she certainly looks like Flannery which neither of the latter day Laura’s did. I wish Y&R would bring back Jamie Lyn Bauer as Lorie Brooks, maybe now rich and ravishing and she could be someone for Jill to play off and battle like she used to with Mrs. C.

Erika Slezak from the history of… this magnanimous genre… is tour de force

I’d welcome and lay out the red carpet… for

whatever it takes to enrich and further the audience treat and bring NBC : DAYS : forefront, IS :

bring it on… she’s reckoned

Kassie’s Blair was my favorite on OLTL. And that is saying a lot because OLTL was my favorite soap FOREVER. There were so many great characters and their portrayers and I still miss “my” show.

I was a fan of Charlotte Ross’ Eve, but I am thoroughly enjoying Kassie’s version of Eve and so glad to have her on my screen again. DOOL is the best of the four daytime soaps right now IMO. Part of the reason is their very talented cast, and Kassie fit right in!

Thanks for another great interview.

I admire Kassie but her Eve has nothing in common with the Eve I loved. I miss Charlotte and hope she returns to the iconic role she created.

This is the new Eve…..23 years later, things do change. I’m glad to be able to see Kassie in this role.

Kassie looks beautiful in the photo above. Going to read the article now.

I absolutely love the character of Eve. I agree with Kassie, I think that JJ and Paige are adorable together. Their romance is innocent and sweet. But, I also think that at some point Eve will end up in bed with JJ. Why else would the writers create the scene as to when JJ first met Eve-in her bra! I can’t stand the character of Theresa; but, I don’t mind her as much when she is in scenes with Eve. I’ve never been a fan of Kristen Alderson’s. She is like nails on a chalkboard for me. Can’t stand Kiki on General Hospital. I like Eve’s relationship with Paige much better than Blair’s and Starr’s. As evil as Eve is, I think she truly does care and love her daughter (even though she will use her for her own agenda). I also loved Eve’s scenes with Maggie. Kassie knocked those scenes out of the park.

I happily report :

I cannot believe how instantly smitten I am with Kassie DePaiva

sure, the first thing that comes to mind is fan base for DAYS

that being said… I got my first take with her on GH… and delighted

now on DAYS : I LOVE her presence

just read today : in the SOD issue… how it was stated how fans and writers alike are through the roof ecstatic over the sister(s) Eve and Theresa… are declaring this twosome… a driving force to be reckoned

I love Eve and Theresa… inasmuch as Shane and Kimberly are the rock of gibraltar, from a legacy family… and I love that

the Donovans should be a featured family

to further delve in to the machinations of these two sisters… along with their beloved… and I LOVE THEM… parents… are a feature to marcquee

a promise of how far DAYS should entreat

I am absolutely delighted and await their scenes

even with Paige… I’m torn about Paige and JJ

as it always turns… : how the Hortons (Jennifer, Abs, JJ ) come out on top

but not this time… Shane, Kimberly, Eve, and Theresa … along with the brother… are sublime… acting chops through the roof… beyond measure

I love that DAYS features Eve and Theresa

bring on Shane and Kimberly

Yes, bring Andrew back!!!

I truly do think, that JJ and Paige have the potential to be the next supercouple.

therein lies the quagmire… and disgust…. with the effervescent Horton

LOL… I dont’ care how I play this out… I love Eve and Theresa

why shouldn’t the Donovan women prevail top and surpass the dire near dull almost boring Horton led by dead Jenn

LOL

at ease

JJ and almost Abs take

there had better be a way for the writing team… and DAYS to forefront how delish and take no prisoners how enchanted delish belong… Eve and Theresa.. with Paige

Jenn is so dull…

why she and Daniel… are upfront canvassed is beyond

how Daniel was able to render Kristen captive with his superman powers made me puke

I can only hope… as usual… that Kristen Eve Theresa Kayla… supplant

absolute power their character drive

would render ME hapless

LOVE Days

I’d love it if Roger Howarth was able to quit GH… and move on to DAYS… as the nuPeter Blake

this would give us Eve and Peter

what a powerhouse tour de force knock out drag out sublime force two pair draw

Yes, or bring back Mike Horton whom moves into the Horton house with…EVE! Where is Michael T. Weiss?

I am absolutely loving Kassie on DAYS. I adored Blair on OLTL, and she will probably always be my fave soap character, but Kassie’s Eve is a close second. I started watching DAYS when Kassie started, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I think Eve’s portrayal of Eve is fantastic – like she said, Eve is broken, but she’s also a force to be reckoned with; and I love that she owns her bitchiness.

Really great interview. Kassie most definitely is a class act. I appreciated her answers and willingness to address the harder questions. I was not thrilled that Charlotte was not returning to the role, but I get why she chose Nashville. In giving Kassie a chance, I didn’t dislike her immediately, and by her third ep or so I was convinced. She’s done a very good job embodying her. Other than the accent, which has us all a bit boggled, but I can look past it for a good fit in the role, which she is. I’m liking her alot, and even when she’s being a bitch, I really love how grey Kassie is playing her. Good stuff, Kassie, glad you’re here.

I really like her in this role. I liked Blair some, hated her some, on OLTL. But I am loving how Kassie’s playing Eve. Whimsical sounds too flighty of a word, but she’s kind of unpredictable and fun. The thing that drives me nuts about The Hortons, especially Jennifer, is that they take themselves so seriously. Ugh…and Eve just doesn’t give them that power. She may be a bitch, but not exactly downright evil. She’s a bit more light-hearted and her scenes with Teresa are great. I’m team Eve all the way.

I am so glad and happy for Kassie. I hope Days execs will keep bringing on more actors/actresses from AMC/OLTL as they have been.

I love Kassie. she is doing such a wonderful job as Eve I do hope that she sticks around Salem for a very long time, thank you Days ….

I just listened to some of Kassies songs what a beautiful voice she has some of her songs brought tears to my eyes ,way to go kassie to bad Days wont let her sing.

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves Talk Return to DAYS for Doug’s Funeral, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Their Enduring Friendship

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on December 3rd. The story will feature emotional and heart-tugging scenes of Doug Williams funeral and honor his portrayer, the beloved Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th at the age of 98.

While the actors, producers, and crew took a lunch time break to pose for some pictures and speak with the press, they knew they would have to get back to taping the funeral, which was going to make it a tough day, but also cathartic for all who loved Bill Hayes.

Several returns have thus far been announced including; Melissa Reeves reprising her signature role of Jennifer Horton (a part she first played in 1985), and Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux. Reeves had last appeared on the show back in 2021, and she was replaced by Emmy-winner Cady McClain in her absence when Jennifer was in storylines. In real-life, Melissa had moved full-time to Tennessee along with her husband, Scott Reeves (ex-DAYS, GH, Y&R). Now, and as previously reported, Reeves will first appear back on DAYS for the Thanksgiving episodes with the Hortons.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Matt and Melissa during the 15,000th episode celebration to get their take on: being back for these special episodes, how it has been working with and watching Susan Seaforth Hayes portray Julie’s grief over losing Doug, and how they have supported each other through the years. Check out what they shared below.

Melissa, you are back on the set of Days of our Lives for this very emotional and special moment in the series history. How does it feel?

MELISSA: Oh, my goodness. I am honored. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but to be here for Bill. He was like my real-life dance partner. He taught me how to ballroom dance. And to be here for Susan, of course, who’s just been our sweet hero this whole week. We’re just following her lead. She’s just been this incredibly strong example for us in the midst of this trial and season of her life. She is like just lifting us all up with her. It’s been incredible.

I was at Bill Hayes memorial service which was truly incredible and I know at the time you were in Tennessee. It was moving and celebratory of his life, all at the same time.

MELISSA: That’s all I have heard. I have to watch it on You Tube. They said it was just a real celebration of his life and I love that.

Photo: JPI

This must be difficult for Susan Seaforth Hayes depicting the death of Doug, when she is still grieving the loss of her beloved husband. (Susan pictured above with the returning Stephen Schnetzer who plays her on-screen brother, Steve Olson).

MELISSA: I’m sure Susan has those moments at home by herself, but she’s so good at being a leader and leading all of us. We’re following her, you know, and she’s like, “This is how I want to feel today.” And we’re just going along with her, you know? It’s so sweet.

Photo: JPI

How is it to see Matt Ashford again live and in-person?

MELISSA: You know, Matt and I can go years without talking, or seeing each other, and then the minute we see each other we’re chatting away.

MATT: Melissa was out on set doing a scene yesterday on the phone talking to a stage manager; as she was telling some really tough news on the phone. I’m like crying in the background, literally, I’m off-stage crying.

MELISSA: And then we get like back into normal life, and we’re like, okay, “What’s happening? What’s happening with this … or what’s happening with that?”

I had read, Melissa, that you were in touch with Matt about if there night be a possibility for you to reprise your role as Jennifer for these special episodes?

MELISSA: Yes. Well, Matt was like, “Hey! Would you want to come back? “And I was like, “Matt, you know, I would always come back. ”

MATT:  Every time I come here to Days of our Lives, they ask, “Where’s Missy? How’s Missy?” Everybody backstage says, “I miss her.” All of the crew is asking about her and saying, “It would be nice to see Missy. Nothing wrong with you Matt, but …”  They said, “Where is she?” I said, “She wants to come!”

Photo: JPI

There are some beautiful photos of Missy and Bill and Susan thorough the years that I found. It just reminded me of just the deep and entrenched history we all have had with the show, personally and professionally.

MATT: Missy is roughly the age where Francis Reid (ex-Alice Horton) was when she started the show, which is just crazy.

Photo: JPI

I’ve always said Missy was going to be the next generation Alice. Do you feel that Jennifer is the heir apparent matriarch of the Horton family?

MELISSA: Yes. I mean, this has been greatest blessing of my life, and that would be great. I told Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of our Lives) when I was 17 that this show would be my life. Ken always told me, “This is your home,” and I’ve always felt like that.

How have gotten through the scenes watching Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie go through the loss of Doug?

MATT: Susan is bringing her best performance life for her and Bill. I mean, she’s a showbiz baby. She always has been one hundred percent, and she’s doing it for him, and this is who they’ve always been. So, you’re seeing this amazing performance colored by her life. She has her private life as Susan, but she has enough plugged into Julie that she’s done amazing work. The director, producers and writers are giving her room to live in these moments and it’s quite wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Have you already broken down in tears during the taping?

MELISSA: Yesterday, but today’s taping of the actual funeral I think they want us to try and be just more celebratory.

MATT: I mean, it is a beautiful long life for Bill Hayes and his character of Doug Williams, and so it will be about that. Then, you get a bunch of us together in the church pews, and there’s going to be hijinks.

MELISSA: We all have been through the waves of grief. You have that awful cry and then all of a sudden you feel okay.  There are those family situations we are portraying where you’re like, “What do we do? What do we do now? You know, no one knows what to do. But, it’s so sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the scenes all turn out.

So, are you glad that Matt and Melissa are back for the 15K episode and Doug’s funeral? From what we can tell, it’s going to be quite an emotional journey for Days of our Lives fans, and especially the performance of Susan Seaforth Hayes,

Ron Carlivati Talks on Decision to Make Days of our Lives 15000th Episode About Doug’s Funeral, and Previews Chances for WGA Award

This week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode. In of it itself, that is an incredible accomplishment for the long-running soap opera currently streaming on Peacock.

However, this on set gathering was a bit different. Though the show is celebrating their achievement, they are also in the middle of taping scenes surrounding the death and the funeral of Doug Williams, played by the late Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th of this year at the age of 98.

As previously revealed many longtime favorites are back to honor Bill and the character of Doug including: Gloria Loring (Liz), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Matthew Ashford (Jack), Maree Cheatham (Marie), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Stephen Schnetzer (Steve) to name but a few.

Michael Fairman TV was in attendance and spoke with Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati to gain some insight into how the 15,000 episode was crafted and the decision to honor the character of Doug Williams and Bill Hayes as its epicenter. In addition, Ron weighed-in on this Sunday’s April 14th WGA (Writers Guild of America) Awards, where he and his writing team are facing off with General Hospital for the daytime drama prize. Here’s what Ron shared below.

Was this your idea to make the 15,000th episode centered around Doug’s funeral and passing?

RON: It was. When you’re looking at it, and laying out the calendar for the whole year and you see 15,000 is coming up, we’re like, “What are we going to do?” And then, we got the news that Bill had passed away and something kind of clicked. I was like, “We should honor Doug on that show.” So then, we started to kind of build around that … when does he pass away? How does he pass away? Who could come back? You know, it’s a lot.  I’m very pleased with the returns that we got as there’s so much that you could do. We wanted everybody we could get. So, we put together a wish list and Janet Drucker (co-executive producer, Days of our Lives) made it happen.

Photo: JPI

You have Melissa Reeves back as Jennifer, when the role was last played by Cady McClain. What has it meant to have Missy back for these shows?

RON: It was so nice to see Missy Reeves. I think Cady has done such a good job, but on the 15,000th episode to see Missy as Jennifer, it’s a big deal. So having her was great, and overall, the milestone was a big undertaking, because you want to live up to it. You want the 15,000th episode to be good. Now, it has a lot of real emotion that you’re playing. because for the cast and the crew they’re honoring Bill Hayes just as much as we’re honoring Doug Williams.

Photo: JPI

Was it hard for you and the team to write this episode?

RON: Yes. I’ll tell you why it was hard to write.  When I wrote, for example, Asa’s (Phillip Carey) death on One Life to Live or Victor’s (John Aniston) on DAYS, Asa is a different type of character. Like, you could have characters going, “Oh! I’m glad he is dead.” You could have different points of view, but with Doug, you’re not having that. Every person loves this man. No one had a bad relationship with him. So, you’re challenge as a writer is how do you make it that not everybody’s saying the same thing and doing the same thing. And so, we tried to find ways to make the episode about all the familial relationships and yet, how do you make it about Doug and yet broaden the scope.

Photo: JPI

I had spoken to Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), a week after Bill’s memorial, for an interview. She said that she felt very fortunate that you did include her on discussions of how you would tackle Doug’s passing. How did that conversation go?

RON: First, I attended Bill’s funeral, which was incredible. I said to so many people it was an emotional service, but it was hard to be sad at this. The guy had an incredible life and it was an incredible celebration. And so, you’re sitting there watching this knowing that you now have to write something similar. And how do you write something that lives up to what you just witnessed? I wanted to talk to Susan to get her thoughts about, you know, how much do you want this to be about keeping Bill separate from Doug. How comfortable are you sharing your grief. She was incredible to talk to. It was a great chat.

You’re in the middle of taping these major scenes for the 15,000 episode to air in December. How do you think it’s going? Have you seen any of the scenes?

RON:  I haven’t seeing anything. I mean, we were still making changes to the script up till this morning!

Photo: JPI

The Writers Guild Awards are this Sunday, April 14th and once again this year there are two daytime drama nominees, General Hospital and Days of our Lives. How are you feeling about your chances this year?

RON: It is often just GH and us in the category. I’ve won three years in a row, so I’m kind of feeling like it’s their turn.

Photo: JPI

What episodes did you submit for contention? If I recall, they had to do with Victor’s memorial.

RON: The episodes we submitted were centered around Victor’s funeral. I think one has story with Vivian (Louise Sorel). We had some fun stuff, we had some emotional stuff at Victor’s death, and I am pretty sure that our submission was three episodes right around that time.

Did you make the decision to go with those episodes because there was a mix of humor and drama?

RON: I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, then there’s Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s crashing the reading of the will. So, we had a lot of fun and it’s hard sometimes to pick three that tell a story, as opposed to submitting for the Daytime Emmys, where the writing team only submits two shows. So, we shall see how it goes on Sunday.
