THIS WEEK: DAYS Stefano Gets Shot! But, Who Pulled the Trigger? And Will the Phoenix Rise Again?

Courtesy/NBC

This week on Days of our Lives, you can clearly see where all the plot lines over the past several weeks have been leading up to you when Stefano DiMera (Joe Mascolo) is shot!  But with so many angry Salemites now gunning for the evil mastermind for the havoc he has caused in their lives for decades, who do you think will be the one who actually pulled the trigger?

Abe wants him dead and people over heard him say that, not good.  Bo, as you will see in the promo just might take matter in to his own hands.  EJ is done with Stefano’s lies and machinations.   Hope, Kate, Marlena, Will, Rafe all have reasons and motives! What about Celeste or someone no one thought of?   Weigh-in!

Then the question becomes, if Stefano gets a bullet, and only ends up with a hospital visit and does not die?  How would the viewers feel about that?   Do you think it’s time for  Stefano to meet his maker, after all he has perpetrated on the good people of Salem?  Or would be “die” only to rise again as the Phoenix does, time after time?    Let us know your thoughts!   Now watch this week’s NBC promo for DAYS to get see if you can figure out who shoots Stefano!

I never, ever want to see Stefano die! If he does, I hope it “doesn’t take”, to quote Rolf. Stefano and Victor are the two best characters on the show.

I hope it’s FauxCeleste who shoots him. She’s terrible in the role and I’d like to see her gone ASAP!

i love Stefan too. You know who I think it was? I think Lexie shot him. What does she have to lose? Look how she said goodbye to him after she overheard?

I totally agree about Lexie being the.shooter, particularily with her leaving Days. It would be a great twist in the storyline.

That was my first thought as well. she left a note downstairs for Abe, she did not go to bed!

I LOVE DAYS ,and would love to see stefano get wat he deserves ,but not in death, it would ruin the show if he died ,but he needs to pay for wat he has done to e1 in salem…..

Lexie! She should be the one to do him in, so he can’t continue his reign of terror after she’s gone.
No offense to Joe Mascolo, but it’s time for Stefano to be gone for good!

I was thinking Abe, but Lexie is an excellent and obvious choice since she’s already leaving the show.

I too hope Stefano is gone for good. I just started watching on a regular basis and this character has been such a one-note. I FF’d through all the Princess and pauper scenes because I couldn’t stand him (well, Hope and John either…LOL). Time for Stefano to go and Mascolo to retire.

I agree. Lexie might’ve pulled the trigger. She’s, unfortunately, leaving the show anyway.

You shut your mouth. He’s the best character. Without him show blows.

If he goes, I will not watch anymore!!

Lexie.

He’s not dead the CIA took stefano after he was shot…saved him so he can go after Ian

GREAT CALL, I THINK YOU HIT IT ON THR HEAD!

what i want to know is why they never mention that John and Stefano are bros. i BELIEVE jOHN IS EJ DAD!

He’s definitely not dead. Either u were right about the CIA or he had a clone of himself ( Luke he did with Rafe. I’m not sure if Lexie could’ve had the heart to do it. I have a strange feeling it was Ian. He WILL come back at some point. The show needs his character- between what will happen with Chad and the whole background story behind EJ not being his son etc. I’ve been watching Days for 28 years and the show is naked without him

Due to his illness in his personal life, he has to take a break. CIA will bring him back at a time when he is able, The Phonix will rise again…

Phoenix…..Phonix was a fraudian slip, “Phoney” death! How many trimes has this happened for him??? He will be back, and I can’t wait..

This may sound crazy but I think it’s Lexie that shoots Stefano! Now in a way, it can be Celeste! My money is on Lexie!

I think it would be sweet justice if Lexie is the one to take Stefano out. I need a break from Stefano anyway. People don’t die in Salem, so they can bring him back in a few years when they need him for a new umbrella mystery.

I agree with Stephanie, with one reservation. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Days. I have watched this show for more years than I care to admit to. I have remained loyal through the many ups and downs in the Salem writing department. During these difficult soap times, it is vital that soaps remain compelling, and find new ways to attain relevance. Days’ writers really need to stop re-treading old story lines that worked ages ago, but are no longer interesting- even to long time viewers. With that in mind, it would be pertinent to finally kill off Stefano, and allow the writers to explore new avenues. However, if and only IF the writers could combine the “attempted murder” of Stefano with an emotional, authentic, compelling, riveting storyline that once and for all truly explains Stefano’s obsession with the Brady’s- well then and only then would I suggest that Stefano stick around for the sake of story. Corday and company tried, about ten years ago, to explore this territory. (Something about a family history with Shaun Brady…..snore, snore, snore) The previous attempt was half-hearted, and like most stories in Salem that offer a unique perspective ( a la Will’s once interesting, but now “precious”- translate- water downed/”safe” coming out plot line) was quickly aborted without any kind of an emotional payoff whatsoever.
There is so much rich history in my favorite show. So many squandered opportunities to bring in viewers with rich emotional stories…(ex: Why not keep Carrie on the show and have her explore latent day motherhood. Austin’s emotional despair is actually interesting- why not keep them and use them properly? Why did Sammy have to give in to “accepting” Will so quickly? It would have been dramatically viable to have Sammy as a homophobic voice in Salem, who refuses to accept her son. Not politically correct, but reflective of real life issues- and therefore might bring in viewers who strong points of view. Why not allow Deidre Hall a storyline that befits her emotional range and beauty?? She is still marvelous to watch- at her age- why not give her something to do besides hang on to John (sorry, but he is crusty and boring- Use her, ditch him) Also- why oh why have they decided to “kill off” Lexie in such a fake, unbelievable manner. I love Rene Jones, and will miss her. They should have written a dramatically interesting exit story for her. Perhaps a ‘kidnapping’ story involving Theo. Maybe an affair with Daniel. Something. Anything but what they came up with. I am sorry, but “Lexie’s death” is PREDICTABLE, boring, and deeply insulting. A brain tumor? Really? She looks like she’s about skip off to a high society event. Every once in awhile she has a “headache”. The storyline is just deeply insulting, and not at all respectful of the actress that has been a pivotal part of the show for decades. While I’m at it, please Lexie, if you must go, please take that new found brother with you. We don’t have air time to waste- this guy is just not a soap actor.)
Whatever they do with Stefano, Days’ writers need to sharpen their pencils, ignite their imaginations and write some dam good story! That dam sand in the hourglass isn’t going to trickle down forever! Save our show and start writing something compelling!!!
Sorry, I know the question was about Stefano, but I have some strong ideas about my favorite show- I want Salem to see its 50th anniversary and beyond! As it is, Tom and Alice are squirming in their Horton Town Square graves wondering what the hell is going on in their once beloved hometown.

Thank You…. Intriguing writing. your words… “the hourglass isn’t going to trickle down forever….” Enliven us back… to the Tom and Alice Horton spirit.

My take on Stefano… i want him to stay on DAYS… COULD THIS BE… THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY… for a new reign… a new helm… taking command of the Dimera Enterprise… ALA… Eileen Davidson! Returning as KRISTEN?!?!

TO Perfect this juggernaut powerhouse…. bring back jason brooks as Peter… flirtatious, simmering sensuality… for Jenn! remember those days?

Kristen as an adversarie, even ally, for Salem.. and vying for John’s affections… would definately give us Marlena… her passion back. her fight. her best foot forward celebrating her woman.

i’m sorry if they’re quashing the will story line so quick. i was hoping for more fallout, drama, gut wrenching, story from lucas and sammi… like your idea of sammi being a homophobe.. as it happens. it would fit her character.. as it is all about her. it would be perfect story for will to cope with.. and still have his grandma marlena to help him through this coming out. Acceptance, tolerance, avoidance, bullying… should be told and shared.. these are adept.. quality.. actors helming the possibilities for more must see serial.

i definately share your take on Carrie and Austin… i do like the Carrie and Rafe story.. yes, rafe’s acting is suspect.. he’s hired for his looks… HOWEVER, I REALLY BELIEVE CARRIE AND RAFE TOGETHER… And agree with your take… that Austin is good acting as the beleagured.. i love you stance… it’s all he knows is carrie… his near desperation.. and or anxious… pleading.

lastly, for Billie… OK.. i’ve already posted this… she was only really good with Robert Kelker-Kelly… what’s the possibility of him returning… “wishful”.

i wish maggie hadn’t gotten married so quickly to victor.. although, they’re good together… remember when she was on the skids, walkiing that fine line.. when mickie died.. she was going to start drinking… ? i give kudos to suzanne rogers for helming salem and keepin the horton family alive.. ala the departed alice horton. she’d stare at the bottle and her hands would start shaking… let’s have some of that.. i really liked her scenes with melanie, her granddaughter.. another horton sibling.

just sharing… and championing DOOL.

since DAYS.. is getting “Pressed”. i can’t leave out Nicole… bar none.. she’s right up there as intelligent smart.. takes no prisoners… ok.. except when it comes to wanting LOVE. EJ – Brady – Rafe. Wow. Now, if only, they’d just make her mother alive… Fay. doesn’t this reak of drama.. Serial… what drives Nicole? FAMILY? IMO.. days core is Nicole and Sammi… now if they’d just KEEP Carrie… this threesome… would drive, steer DAYS collectively. Just have FAY show up…. remember when she was a love interest for ABE at one time? this would be hot…

finally, Kayla stuck behind the bar… helping out her Mother…. put her back in the hospital… how about Kayla and Daniel? she deserves some hotness. the hosp is without lexie and dr. carly manning.

I agree. I love Rafe and Carrie. They are written in the stars. Wish Carrie was staying, butmaybe she will return for Rafe.

Remember Jenn’s Mother… Dr. Laura…. LOL… she was pure camp.. classic Serial…. Miss Egg Shells. Jenn was just beside herself. Fragile neurotic.. there were many flights Laura had left in her..

Didn’t Laura look good with Bill! i thought so… when they returned forn Grans’ funteral. I also liked the chemistry with Bill and Kate. this would really rock Dr. Laura’s Boat.

who cares about stefano dimera. i think they should kill him off. enough already of stefano getting away with everything. i love joseph mascalo but he needs to go or retire. he never pays for his crimes. he probably won’t die. thats what i heard. he will probably rise again from the dead. i think bo melanie or celeste shot stefano. or maybe someone that we don’t expect shot stefano.

That’s why I love his character bc he always gets away with stuff. I always root for him

wrong answer ricardo stefano/joe is days of our lives period

how long have u watched?

With Molly Burnett leaving in June, my best guess is that Melanie is the shooter.

But she would never do that to her boyfriend’s father. Besides, he has never directly targeted her (unless you count Maggie accidentally being shot last summer).

Glad to see DOOL is improving. I love this show and have watched on/off for over 30 years!

I read that Joseph Mascolo was retiring, so…I think they should kill off Stefano. He is irreplacable in my book. I too would like to see the shooter be Lexie if indeed her character is being killed off (permanently). He deserves it. That said, I love both actors and the characters Stefano and Lexi and I will miss them. It will make for great story though, which this show really needs.

The Pheonix shall rise no more!

Reading this stuff, makes me anxious. it’s all plot, storied potential. oh no. just not with my favorite actor…. what to do! STEFANO IS IRREPLACEABLE. I likened him to one of the few shakespeares of daytime. As for Lexie… such an enigmatic… loving presence… and she should remain as such… not taking out her father. for all his faults… Lexie loved her father. yeah, we all have the goody two shoes.. but, Lexie, didn’t come off as sugary sweet… she remained a constant fixture on the canvas. i’ll miss that Isaac doesn’t have his mother…. KUDOS to Renee Jones… remember the story when her child died.. and she took Hopes baby? god… that was lexie’s best story, by far.. IMO. I just read that ian is leaving the show… perhaps, this is who shot stefano… DAYS.. ok its reaching.. but, without alice horton… is days without the phoenix… legend.

I love Stefano he makes the show. Please don’t let him die and EJ should be Stefano son. The one thing I don’t like is Carrie & Rafe. Carrie makes me sick going with her sister’s husband what’s good about that??? sure doesn’t make her the good one Austin should get rid of her and not shed a tear. I will miss Lexie wish she didn’t have to die, but no-one could take her place. Don’t let her shoot Stefano , she is his daughter let her die being a good person.

I hope it is either Celeste or Ian! Maybe Lexie, too!

i hope it wasn’t Celeste.. just cause Lexie is “leaving”. God.. wasn’t Celeste, Tanya Boyd… Crock pot sensual? all she had to do was walk in to a room… ready to spar… with tarot cards in her purse.

it’s takiing away history… Celeste and Fay…. Lexie and Nicole’s Mothers.

don’t let it be Melanie either… as she and dr. carly manning could return someday.

leave something for us fans to ponder. possibilities, and potential down the road.

crock pot… = meant to say pressure cooker sensual. she was truly a lioness with her cubs. Lexie.

Stefano fakes his death. Joe takes a summer vacation. Stefano returns and seeks revenge. Days wouldn’t be Days without Stefano.

PERFECT ANSWER david

NOW THERE IS AN IDEA I REALLY LIKE!!!! I’M STUMPED ON WHO MAY HAVE KILLED HIM…I LOVE THE IDEA OF HIS FAKING HIS DEATH…YOU ARE VERY CLEVER.

Stefano is the phoenix…he’ll be back. I don’t know if someone else wrote that before me – I didn’t read all the comments. I’ve been watching this show since the mid 70’s and he’s returned before.

A great line would be EJ shot him, now he’s in charge and not a Dimera but Lexi is the only other person who knows the truth. She dies, Stefano dies – EJ runs the family business…and the phoenix rises again…

Lexie will be the one to pull the trigger!!!

I wish Jack D. pulled the trigger. I never wanted Whack Jack back on DOOL! What a freakin’ corn-ball! I wanted Jen w/ Daniel to be together. I wanted more story lines for the Carvers, but Lexie’s leaving.

I think it should be the guy that Stephano was going to make the illegal arms deal with and his pose as payback for setting them up with the CIA.

After about 30 years of watching Days I would like to see them do something unpredictable with this but my best guess would be Kate because just like Stephano she always gets away with attempted murder.

It’s going to be Lexie who will shot Stefino. When she found out what he did to her by keeping her in the celler.

I think Lexie will be the shooter

If they kill off stefano then the producers are retards. He makes the show. Without him their is no show. Every time he wasn’t on the show it wasn’t interesting at all. I always root for him and things he does. I love it. He keeps the show interesting

Lexi did it. She is the only one with nothing to lose.

One by one the characters confront Stefano but rationalize why they shouldn’t or can’t bring themselves to shoot him. It seems ridiculous that they don’t see or run into each other. But maybe they do. Will is the only one who displays raw emotions, he’s acting impulsively and not capable of thinking this through rationally. He picks up the gun, shoots, misses and flees. The others lingered closely after leaving and they see Will enter or leave and heard the gun shot. They return to the mansion not because they have second thoughts that they should kill Stefano, but they fear Will has shot Stefano and are looking to protect Will. Marlena, John, Bo, Hope, and Kate would all want to protect Will. Despite everything even EJ is actually quite fond of Will. They find the gun but Stefano is no worse for wear. It is either Lexie who shoots Stefano because of all the harm he has done to her friends and she has learned Stefano is responsible for her Cancer, or Ian because he was in this episode but served no real purpose. In addition, Ian has some ties to the DiMeras as his walking stick has the Phoenix on it.

One thing I know from watching Days for 26 years………..the shooter WAS NOT anyone that was staring at their gun this past week (so Marlena is out). So the Lexie guesses are probable…….Celeste maybe……….Cameron?……….or maybe someone totally unexpected? Kayla with the gun from the Brady Pub safe (not safe a place).

well i think WILL or EJ did it but maybe i wrong but you all r right i think in a few years they will bring him back. But I LOVE DAYS.I have been watching this soap for 20 years and i love it i wish that the would bring SHAWN&BELL back.

I totally think Lexie! It makes the most sense to me. She has motive more than anyone. Also, Days spent too much time establishing alibi’s for each of the 8 suspects. I’ve been thinking Lexie all weekend. I watched the show today (Monday) and while she put on a good act when she heard the news of Stefano’s death it was later revealed that the gun used in the murder is registered to Abe! She left a note for Abe saying that she was going to bed. He never checked on her which gave her the perfect time to run out and shoot her father. Did you see the look she gave him before he left? It’s a great storyline but, I’m sure the phoenix will rise again. He’s awesome!

DAYS IS MY FAVORITE…HAS BEEN FOR YEARS. I LOVE THE CHARACTERS…ESPECIALLY RAFE. I HOPE IT WILL BE ON FOR A LONG TIME.

Omg! So many good suspects! How about Ian!!!! Could it be?

ANNA DIMERA DID IT! SHE RECOVERED FROM HER COMA AND SOUGHT REVENGE ON STEFANO FOR TONY’S DEATH!

I’m almost 50 years of age and I’ve retired from law enforcement..I love stefano dimera.. Please allow stefano to remain on Days just like Alice Horton did long as Joseph mascola’s living he needs be on days.. Stefano dimeara is the sole and only reason many many many of us watch Days..Take stefano off days and days will cease to remain on TV..

why would lexie kill her own father she loved her father let’s leave lexie out of this as a suspect she’s dead leave lexie be as a good person and not as a killer since peter reckell is leaving days of our lives why don’t we name bo as stephano’s killer that makes more sense

i love that charater stephano we need to keep stephano he is the best villian for days of our lives without stephano days of our lives would be boring without him please let stephano come back again keep on rising like the pheonix forever always keep the pheonix alive

rafe is a schumock and has no scruples rafe could have fathered carrie’s baby and that is the only baby he fathered and not nicole’s nicole is only using him and does not know it rafe doesn’t know when he’s being played

why is it always the obvious ones that shot stephano what about caroline she did the deed before with trent robbins and leave my ej alone he made have hated stephano but ej also loved him inspite of it stephano my not have been ej’s father but ej loved him like a father

i bet my money on caroline as stephano’s shooter she always vocally expressed her hatered to stephano for so many years does anybody want to take this bet

please don’t let it be lexie as the shooter lexie is not a evil person to do this she has always been a good person type of charater please be respectable to lexie let her rest in piece as a good person as in charater

I hope Stefano is not really dead. With all the cuts made on Days, I am getting sick of the Ups and Downs on it. I love the DeMearas and especially Stefano. Does it have anything to do with the actress who plays Billie calling him a bad actor on a talk show? I wish they’d get rid of her character. She’s boring and worn out for the role. Stefano and EJ will always be young and vibrant. Bring Tony back too.

Days of our lives without Stefano is not Days! I’ve been watching Days for over 38 years, no Stefano no Days! and no Bo? why? keep the old timers, the new kidz aren’t so interesting, their too young, if you must, bring in people around the age of 35-45 ….. who wants to watch 18 year olds who can’t act? Sami, she’s the BEST!!!!

As much as I love to watch Stefano…lets be realistic, the man is 83 yrs of age. Time he retired to enjoy the rest of his days with his family & relaxing. I thank him for many years of enjoyment and wish him well.

This week, DAYS head scribe, Ron Carlivati, confirmed that, and told Michael Fairman TV on the decision of the scripts the team submitted: “I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, and then there was Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s (Louise Sorel) crashing the reading of the will.”

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves Talk Return to DAYS for Doug’s Funeral, Susan Seaforth Hayes, and Their Enduring Friendship

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode which is tentatively scheduled to air on December 3rd. The story will feature emotional and heart-tugging scenes of Doug Williams funeral and honor his portrayer, the beloved Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th at the age of 98.

While the actors, producers, and crew took a lunch time break to pose for some pictures and speak with the press, they knew they would have to get back to taping the funeral, which was going to make it a tough day, but also cathartic for all who loved Bill Hayes.

Several returns have thus far been announced including; Melissa Reeves reprising her signature role of Jennifer Horton (a part she first played in 1985), and Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux. Reeves had last appeared on the show back in 2021, and she was replaced by Emmy-winner Cady McClain in her absence when Jennifer was in storylines. In real-life, Melissa had moved full-time to Tennessee along with her husband, Scott Reeves (ex-DAYS, GH, Y&R). Now, and as previously reported, Reeves will first appear back on DAYS for the Thanksgiving episodes with the Hortons.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Matt and Melissa during the 15,000th episode celebration to get their take on: being back for these special episodes, how it has been working with and watching Susan Seaforth Hayes portray Julie’s grief over losing Doug, and how they have supported each other through the years. Check out what they shared below.

Melissa, you are back on the set of Days of our Lives for this very emotional and special moment in the series history. How does it feel?

MELISSA: Oh, my goodness. I am honored. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but to be here for Bill. He was like my real-life dance partner. He taught me how to ballroom dance. And to be here for Susan, of course, who’s just been our sweet hero this whole week. We’re just following her lead. She’s just been this incredibly strong example for us in the midst of this trial and season of her life. She is like just lifting us all up with her. It’s been incredible.

I was at Bill Hayes memorial service which was truly incredible and I know at the time you were in Tennessee. It was moving and celebratory of his life, all at the same time.

MELISSA: That’s all I have heard. I have to watch it on You Tube. They said it was just a real celebration of his life and I love that.

Photo: JPI

This must be difficult for Susan Seaforth Hayes depicting the death of Doug, when she is still grieving the loss of her beloved husband. (Susan pictured above with the returning Stephen Schnetzer who plays her on-screen brother, Steve Olson).

MELISSA: I’m sure Susan has those moments at home by herself, but she’s so good at being a leader and leading all of us. We’re following her, you know, and she’s like, “This is how I want to feel today.” And we’re just going along with her, you know? It’s so sweet.

Photo: JPI

How is it to see Matt Ashford again live and in-person?

MELISSA: You know, Matt and I can go years without talking, or seeing each other, and then the minute we see each other we’re chatting away.

MATT: Melissa was out on set doing a scene yesterday on the phone talking to a stage manager; as she was telling some really tough news on the phone. I’m like crying in the background, literally, I’m off-stage crying.

MELISSA: And then we get like back into normal life, and we’re like, okay, “What’s happening? What’s happening with this … or what’s happening with that?”

I had read, Melissa, that you were in touch with Matt about if there night be a possibility for you to reprise your role as Jennifer for these special episodes?

MELISSA: Yes. Well, Matt was like, “Hey! Would you want to come back? “And I was like, “Matt, you know, I would always come back. ”

MATT:  Every time I come here to Days of our Lives, they ask, “Where’s Missy? How’s Missy?” Everybody backstage says, “I miss her.” All of the crew is asking about her and saying, “It would be nice to see Missy. Nothing wrong with you Matt, but …”  They said, “Where is she?” I said, “She wants to come!”

Photo: JPI

There are some beautiful photos of Missy and Bill and Susan thorough the years that I found. It just reminded me of just the deep and entrenched history we all have had with the show, personally and professionally.

MATT: Missy is roughly the age where Francis Reid (ex-Alice Horton) was when she started the show, which is just crazy.

Photo: JPI

I’ve always said Missy was going to be the next generation Alice. Do you feel that Jennifer is the heir apparent matriarch of the Horton family?

MELISSA: Yes. I mean, this has been greatest blessing of my life, and that would be great. I told Ken Corday (executive producer, Days of our Lives) when I was 17 that this show would be my life. Ken always told me, “This is your home,” and I’ve always felt like that.

How have gotten through the scenes watching Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie go through the loss of Doug?

MATT: Susan is bringing her best performance life for her and Bill. I mean, she’s a showbiz baby. She always has been one hundred percent, and she’s doing it for him, and this is who they’ve always been. So, you’re seeing this amazing performance colored by her life. She has her private life as Susan, but she has enough plugged into Julie that she’s done amazing work. The director, producers and writers are giving her room to live in these moments and it’s quite wonderful.

Photo: JPI

Have you already broken down in tears during the taping?

MELISSA: Yesterday, but today’s taping of the actual funeral I think they want us to try and be just more celebratory.

MATT: I mean, it is a beautiful long life for Bill Hayes and his character of Doug Williams, and so it will be about that. Then, you get a bunch of us together in the church pews, and there’s going to be hijinks.

MELISSA: We all have been through the waves of grief. You have that awful cry and then all of a sudden you feel okay.  There are those family situations we are portraying where you’re like, “What do we do? What do we do now? You know, no one knows what to do. But, it’s so sweet. I’m looking forward to seeing how the scenes all turn out.

So, are you glad that Matt and Melissa are back for the 15K episode and Doug’s funeral? From what we can tell, it’s going to be quite an emotional journey for Days of our Lives fans, and especially the performance of Susan Seaforth Hayes,

Ron Carlivati Talks on Decision to Make Days of our Lives 15000th Episode About Doug’s Funeral, and Previews Chances for WGA Award

This week, Days of our Lives celebrated the taping of their 15,000th episode. In of it itself, that is an incredible accomplishment for the long-running soap opera currently streaming on Peacock.

However, this on set gathering was a bit different. Though the show is celebrating their achievement, they are also in the middle of taping scenes surrounding the death and the funeral of Doug Williams, played by the late Bill Hayes, who passed away on January 12th of this year at the age of 98.

As previously revealed many longtime favorites are back to honor Bill and the character of Doug including: Gloria Loring (Liz), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Matthew Ashford (Jack), Maree Cheatham (Marie), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Stephen Schnetzer (Steve) to name but a few.

Photo: JPI

Michael Fairman TV was in attendance and spoke with Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati to gain some insight into how the 15,000 episode was crafted and the decision to honor the character of Doug Williams and Bill Hayes as its epicenter. In addition, Ron weighed-in on this Sunday’s April 14th WGA (Writers Guild of America) Awards, where he and his writing team are facing off with General Hospital for the daytime drama prize. Here’s what Ron shared below.

Was this your idea to make the 15,000th episode centered around Doug’s funeral and passing?

RON: It was. When you’re looking at it, and laying out the calendar for the whole year and you see 15,000 is coming up, we’re like, “What are we going to do?” And then, we got the news that Bill had passed away and something kind of clicked. I was like, “We should honor Doug on that show.” So then, we started to kind of build around that … when does he pass away? How does he pass away? Who could come back? You know, it’s a lot.  I’m very pleased with the returns that we got as there’s so much that you could do. We wanted everybody we could get. So, we put together a wish list and Janet Drucker (co-executive producer, Days of our Lives) made it happen.

You have Melissa Reeves back as Jennifer, when the role was last played by Cady McClain. What has it meant to have Missy back for these shows?

RON: It was so nice to see Missy Reeves. I think Cady has done such a good job, but on the 15,000th episode to see Missy as Jennifer, it’s a big deal. So having her was great, and overall, the milestone was a big undertaking, because you want to live up to it. You want the 15,000th episode to be good. Now, it has a lot of real emotion that you’re playing. because for the cast and the crew they’re honoring Bill Hayes just as much as we’re honoring Doug Williams.

Was it hard for you and the team to write this episode?

RON: Yes. I’ll tell you why it was hard to write.  When I wrote, for example, Asa’s (Phillip Carey) death on One Life to Live or Victor’s (John Aniston) on DAYS, Asa is a different type of character. Like, you could have characters going, “Oh! I’m glad he is dead.” You could have different points of view, but with Doug, you’re not having that. Every person loves this man. No one had a bad relationship with him. So, you’re challenge as a writer is how do you make it that not everybody’s saying the same thing and doing the same thing. And so, we tried to find ways to make the episode about all the familial relationships and yet, how do you make it about Doug and yet broaden the scope.

I had spoken to Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), a week after Bill’s memorial, for an interview. She said that she felt very fortunate that you did include her on discussions of how you would tackle Doug’s passing. How did that conversation go?

RON: First, I attended Bill’s funeral, which was incredible. I said to so many people it was an emotional service, but it was hard to be sad at this. The guy had an incredible life and it was an incredible celebration. And so, you’re sitting there watching this knowing that you now have to write something similar. And how do you write something that lives up to what you just witnessed? I wanted to talk to Susan to get her thoughts about, you know, how much do you want this to be about keeping Bill separate from Doug. How comfortable are you sharing your grief. She was incredible to talk to. It was a great chat.

You’re in the middle of taping these major scenes for the 15,000 episode to air in December. How do you think it’s going? Have you seen any of the scenes?

RON:  I haven’t seeing anything. I mean, we were still making changes to the script up till this morning!

The Writers Guild Awards are this Sunday, April 14th and once again this year there are two daytime drama nominees, General Hospital and Days of our Lives. How are you feeling about your chances this year?

RON: It is often just GH and us in the category. I’ve won three years in a row, so I’m kind of feeling like it’s their turn.

What episodes did you submit for contention? If I recall, they had to do with Victor’s memorial.

RON: The episodes we submitted were centered around Victor’s funeral. I think one has story with Vivian (Louise Sorel). We had some fun stuff, we had some emotional stuff at Victor’s death, and I am pretty sure that our submission was three episodes right around that time.

Did you make the decision to go with those episodes because there was a mix of humor and drama?

RON: I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, then there’s Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth, and then Vivian’s crashing the reading of the will. So, we had a lot of fun and it’s hard sometimes to pick three that tell a story, as opposed to submitting for the Daytime Emmys, where the writing team only submits two shows. So, we shall see how it goes on Sunday.
