Mark your calendars for a very special segment on the soaps, when E! News delivers their Daytime Drama deep dive on Thursday, May 23 hosted by Giuliana Rancic and Jason Kennedy at 7pm-8pm ET/PT on cable’s E!

Look for set visits, interviews, retro clips, and more with some of the most famous and enduring characters in the genre.  Here’s just a sample of what to watch for:

When E! News visit the set of Y&R, Eric Braeden recounts the time Victor was feeding his wife Julia’s lover trapped in the basement dead rat; while Tracey Bregman (Lauren) reflects on why the viewers love the relationships and families in Genoa City.

In Salem and Days of our Lives, E! chats with series staples: Kristian Alfonso (Hope), then Deidre Hall (Marlena) and Drake Hogestyn (John).  Deidre reveals “possession will be on my tombstone” in terms of Marlena’s most infamous story of all-time when the good doc was possessed by Satan, while the beloved duo discuss why daytime is the best job to have.  Alfonso talks on the history of her character sharing: “I am going to hold near and dear to my heart the beginnings of Hope. And the adventure and the romance of Bo and Hope”.

From the set of General Hospital new interviews are featured with: Laura Wright (Carly), Steve Burton (Jason) and Kristina Wagner (Felicia), plus Casting Director Mark Teschner remembers Meghan Markle’s acting debut on the ABC daytime drama series.

Teschner remembers: “Meghan Markle actually had her first speaking role in television on General Hospital.  She worked on the show in the background as a nurse, and we brought her up to read her to see if there was something there.”

Steve Burton chats on the craziest story he has ever played as Jason Morgan, revealing, “The one that always pops into my head is we had to go catch a monkey that had a virus, and I said to Laura (Wright) I think this is probably the end of my career today.”

The E! News special segment will show nostalgic clips from all the daytime dramas, including Luke and Laura’s wedding on GH, Marlena’s possession from DAYS, and some of Victor’s nefarious schemes from Y&R.

If only soaps continued to get press like this, but I doubt networks are interested.

I’ll definitely watch and let E! know I did ~ because I’m sure they aren’t counting me. I want them to know (any channel that supports soaps) that I am ONLY watching because they’re promoting the genre in some way. Viva les soaps!

I don’t think I was born when the devil too possession of Marlena’s soul…… so, I am glad I don’t remember that fallacy, albeit I heard enough from my grandmother.
So dumb!!
Another dumb piece of script is Eve as the Commish….seriously??
What is wrong with this writing staff? Does Eve even have permission to carry a gun? She has no knowledge of law….now instruction…..no experience to go from a laymam ( oops, excuse me…LayWOMAN….we don’t want to step on anyone’s toes) to police chief?? C’mon, now!!!!!! Why do they treat their audience like a mindless child? This idiocy would only happen in Lalaland……the same could be said about sending Haley back to China? No way, no how–TPTB cannot sell this drivel to us–there is Daca in place. No one, who has been here as a child is immediately sent off. There is a two-year grace period. In this case specifically, Haley’s mother is an American citizen.
I find it very offensive, albeit it’s a soap, that the laws are being misrepresented. ….that’s not how it works. Get real….. This is another soap resembling the comedic writing of Shakespeare as he ridiculed society…..” The Comedy of Errors”…Fake!! Bring a little reality into it.

You really should look up those old Marlena scenes. Not to brag, but I think it was some of my best work! I really enjoyed my vacation in Salem.

As far as faux-Eve being named “commissioner”, it’s meant to be a ridiculous appointment. ReRon is attempting political satire here, and it’s obvious who Jack is a parody of. And that guy’s cabinet appointments have all been exactly as qualified as faux-Eve.

Whether ReRon succeeds in his political satire is a whole other matter, of course. Now that he’s already moving on with another one of his dumb latex mask plots (“Nicole” is obviously Kristen, you can bet your soul on it. Hopefully it will be the real Kristen and not that poor recast from a few months back)

I find no interest immersing myself within the supernatural….I’ll have nightmares. I can’t watch that stuff—movies etc. I am serious. I’m a big baby, I know!!
As far as political satire, “ReRon” is failing miserably. I don’t see the “sick” humor–this coming from moi….I have a warped sense of humor. Thus, if it “ain’t” working for me, then he needs to take a few courses in Humanities–“Shakespeare”, “Moliere”” , Mark Russell ( political satirist non-pareil) etc.
This is a shoddy job, trying to make the ridiculous pass as unadulterated ridiculous. Political satire should be esoterically projected. Alas, this piece of third-grade writing does not pass muster. It lacked fecundity. No humor.
I agree about Kristen/Nicole. She must have gotten in touch with Faison. Ha!!
I am too tired to check my typos. Therefore, I apologize in advance. I made a mess of my last comment.

I was watching old clips of Guiding Light last night. Our “stories” used to have such adventure and romance. We cared for the characters. NO MORE. It’s so sad, how our shows have been dwindled down to hiring boyfriends in the parking lot. I love the romance of Bo and Hope, Doc and John, and so many others.

On another note, there is nothing “there” with Markle. She’s an opportunist. She is NO Princess Diana or Kate.

Agreed, DMRR… all of it!!
As far as the dubious Windsor princess, I read somewhere that she had asked a “London” friend to introduce her to a famous Englishman of means. It was an orchestrated meeting. She got lucky, or not. Whatever turns her on, I guess. I hope she’s happy. Thst’s what’s most important.
What is pathetic to me is that when the original movie was televised ( soon after their engagement became official), we were made to believe ( NOT) that “the opportunist” had no idea who Harry was. Right!! My five-year old knows who Harry is. He is as appealing as a toad with warts—what’s attractive to any shallow, superficial woman is his title and all the benefits that come with it.
At least I admit my little idiosyncrasies—I could never fall in love, be intimate, or marry a less than gorgeous guy–but, that’s just moi—with or without money!! I am vain and picky…..what can I say?? LOL.

I love lucas and sami. Hope to have them back as a family with all 4 kids.

‘The Talk’ Renewed For 15th and Final Season to End in December; Does Its Cancellation Make Room for ‘The Gates’?

Things just got very interesting over at CBS daytime with the announcement today that The Talk is going to end its run on the network after its 15th season, and that season looks to be shortened as the series will come to its conclusion in December of 2024.

In a joint statement, Amy Reisenbach, President, CBS Entertainment and David Stapf, President, CBS Studio, shared, “The Talk broke new ground when it launched 14 years ago by returning daytime talk to CBS with a refreshing and award-winning format. Throughout the years, it has been a key program on CBS’ top rated daytime line-up as it brought timely, important and entertaining topics and discussions into living rooms around the globe.”

Reisenback and Stapf added, “It goes without saying that hosting and producing a year-round talk show is no easy task, and we express our sincere gratitude to our amazing hosts Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell and Sheryl Underwood, our Executive Producer/Showrunner Rob Crabbe and the hardworking producing team and crew.

Giving props to those who co-hosted or worked on the show through the years including: Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen Moonves, Carrie Ann Inaba Leah Ramimi, Marissa Janet Winokur, Holly Robinson Peete, Eve, Aisha Tyler, and Sharon Osbourne, the joint statement added, “We also want to acknowledge our former show hosts and colleagues who contributed throughout the seasons. We truly appreciate the skill, creativity, and dedication everyone involved brought to the show every day.  And of course, we thank the numerous guests who appeared, and the millions of viewers who tuned in daily. For the final season, we plan to celebrate the show and give it the proper sendoff it deserves when it concludes in December 2024.”

While no firm decision or announcement has been given at this time, it seems most likely that The Talk’s time slot could be given to the new soap opera in development The Gates from CBS Studio Ventures and from longtime soap opera writer. Michele Val Jean.  As previously reported, The Gates features the lives of a wealthy Black family who reside in a posh, gated community.

The Talk was originally the brainchild of Sara Gilbert, who had developed the show when it launched back 2010 and it replaced the beloved As the World Turns which went off the air after 54 years when CBS canceled it.

So, what do you think of The Talk being canceled? Will this make room for The Gates to begin to air in its spot beginning in 2025? Share your reactions to the news via the comment section.

O. J. Simpson Dead at 76: Real-Life Murder Trial in Which He Was Acquitted, Changed the Trajectory of Soap Operas

Former Pro Football superstar, O. J. Simpson, who became infamous for being on trial for the murders of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, has passed away at the age of 76 of cancer.

Simpson’s family put out a statement sharing, “Our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”

It was the murder trial that overtook the airwaves back in late 1994 and through most of 1995 that changed the landscape of daytime television forever, and in particular soap operas that many will recall.

Photo: AP

On June 12, 1994, Nicole Simpson, O.J.’s former wife, and her friend, Ron Goldman, were brutally murdered. When O.J. became the prime suspect, a wild pursuant of him by the police while in his white Ford Bronco was viewed on every network by some 95 million viewers. This June marks 30-years since the incident.

Ultimately, Simpson was charged with Brown Simpson and Goldman’s murders, though he was acquitted in what was dubbed The Trial of the Century.

The trial permeated the airwaves of every network and any time of day. Networks consistently interrupted soap operas while covering the day in and day out of the spectacle that was this star athlete and TV and film star’s trial.

With many of the soaps pre-empted on a regular basis, the public fascination of Simpson’s trial was to many better than a soap opera as it has all the ingredients. Writer Dominic Dunne noted the themes via an article in Vanity Fair of “interracial marriage, love, lust, lies, hate, fame, wealth, beauty, obsession, spousal abuse, stalking, brokenhearted children, the bloodiest of bloody knife-slashing homicides, and all the justice that money can buy.”

Because of the trial, soap operas lost a significant amount of their audiences. The murder trial went on for 11 months from November 9, 1994, to October 3, 1995.  They never were able to fully rebound as reality television became the next big thing.

O.J. Simpson is survived by four children: Arnelle and Jason, from his first marriage, and Sydney and Justin, from his marriage to Nicole Brown Simpson.

So, do you remember being frustrated that your favorite soaps could not air during the O.J. trial, or did you find the murder trial more intriuing than the soaps themselves? Comment below.
