TV Guide Picks: GH & OLTL as Best Bets to Land Daytime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Drama Series!
If you want to know what each soap opera eligible for this year’s upcoming Daytime Emmys submitted to land a nomination for the Outstanding Daytime Drama Series, look no further than TV Guide. Michael Logan takes a look at how the six soaps vying for a final spot might do when the nominations are announced on May 4th.
We are happy to report that this year, if there is a soap God, One Life to Live will be in the running as a pretty sure bet along with General Hospital. According to TVG: The Bold and the Beautiful and All My Children might also have good shots, while DAYS and Y&R submissions made little to no sense why they were chosen by the powers-that-be. That being said, here are excerpts on the review of OLTL and GH’s Outstanding Drama Series submissions:
General Hospital: “Two absolutely splendid submissions. In the first, Carly and Jax find out their infant, Josslyn, has a rare form of cancer and is in dire need of new kidneys. At the very same time, little Jake is put on life support after being run over by his grandfather, Luke. Carly must go to the child’s grieving birth dad Jason (a remarkably moving Steve Burton and ask him for the organs. Episode 2 has several characters — Tracy, Lucky, Carly, Ethan, Sonny, Nikolas — holding Luke hostage and staging an intervention. Stubbornly insisting he’s not an alcoholic, Luke takes full responsibility for Jake’s death but refuses to blame it away on liquor. Tony Geary performance is raw, ballsy and profound and the rest of the cast isn’t far behind.” Chance of a nomination: “This is the one to beat.”
One Life to Live: “The show did a curious (and probably savvy) thing by asking the judges to view its two submissions out of sequence. First up is the hour from last December where everyone in Llanview (even badass Clint) is suddenly nuts about the TV soap Fraternity Row, an outta-nowhere twist that gave OLTL a chance to lovingly spoof our obsession with soaps and skewer the foolish suits at ABC for destroying them. Riddled with every cliché in the suds 101 handbook — “Happy is boring!” gripes Roxy in defense of Fraternity‘s over-the-top dramatics — it’s a delightful bit of satire likely to score with any judge who ever toiled in daytime drama. The show’s second submission was the Valentine’s 2011 show that exploded with shocking reveals — Jess slept with Ford! Brody is the father of Natalie’s baby! Charlie isn’t Rex’s father, Clint is! In fact, there were so many feverish developments it’s laughable, but this was damn fine overkill. Plus, the opportunity to honor this wrongly cancelled soap may be impossible to resist.” Chance of a nomination: “Excellent. This was stellar work done during extremely trying times. The work of champs.”
Check out what the rest of the daytime sudsers submitted in the TV Guide article post, and then let us know after you have reviewed, who you think should score a nomination?
I think OLTL’s best moment was when Roger Howarth returned as Todd, and he was catatonic except for a finger twitch, then baker gave todd an injection, nothing happened, then as he was leaving about to have todd done away with todd grabs baker.
I hope one life to live ,all my children and general hospital win everything. And I hope it leaves abc/disney once again scratching there stupid heads thinking did we make a mistake? I trusted abc/disney to keep my soaps on forever ,never in a million years would I think that the mouse house would destroy the best 2 hours they had and turn there afternoon into a news, talking, food crap fest of some of the most boring nasty television programing they could put on there network and that revolution that I lost my one life to live over has to be the most single handed stupid decisions abc/disney has choose to do,what a waste of 2 wonderful classic soaps.I hope my abc soaps win because this will be the last year they will ever be able to win any awards thanks to brain frons and the other idiots who chose to change there daytime programming ,One life to live had the best stories going and if they dont win for best actor, best actresss, best writing ,and best dam soap ever something is wrong with the morons that are running daytime television and seriously I don’t think they know what there doing because the best of daytime was all the soaps that was the reason people tuned into the emmys now we have only 4 what a disappointment,I hope we get to watch one more time If only to say goodbye to One life to live and all my children, because the shows those dopy networks have on now no one will tune in to see if the guy with the orange hair or the woman with the hair flying all over in her food takes home the emmy,I know I wont care.
WHY would GH win anything? They were crap up until very recently, and they are still in last place for soaps. Confused.
Hey Debi your back where have you been?I only put gh down because I love my abc soaps, well soap now ,my heart is with one life to live.and you are right gh was crap up until a while ago,but enjoying it now ,glad your back.
I have been watching GH, B&B, DOOL & Y&R some since ABC cancelled OLTL & AMC. I like GH best of these 4 but neither of them matches or comes close to my OLTL. I hope OLTL & AMC walk away with all the awards to show ABC what a stupid mistake they made.
I’m with you there, Edna.
Me too. I miss OLTL more every day.
OLTL should win hands down………They are all so talented……Erika Slezak shoud win..she was the heart of the show.. She held everything together…All her good advice & the love for her family and friends………I miss these guys soooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They better win awrds they deserve it…This was the best soap…It had more heart than any soap I know!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can’t stop giving praises for OLTL….It was such a heart-warming soap…Can’t say that enough… It was the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are so right. OLTL was the BEST!!!!!
OLTL was the greatest! I still miss it everyday! I hope they sweep the awards!
I dont think any soap can compare to one life to live it was the best ,we were spoiled .the best cast and the wonderful writing ,always had a homey feeling to it like we belonged there ,It was for me a honer to visit landview 5 days a week,abc/disney was Stupid to get rid of their best show, 43 years of the best ever drama,I miss Erika Slezak.I want that precious hour back.
They have repeats of OLTL on the soap channel…………On my cable station it’s on channel 158 at 7:00am & again at 8:00am……………..
OLTL deserves to go away with the big award. I’m still so upset that it’s not still on tv. I have been watching the four remaining soaps, and none of them satisfy my craving of daytime drama like OLTL did. The addition of the OLTL characters on GH hasn’t even helped me. I want my show back!!! If OLTL doesn’t clean house at the awards ceremony, I will know that ABC had a hand in it somehow….just so they can try and save face, although it’s a little too late for that.
I feel the same way Torrey. My days are just not the same without OLTL to look forward to. I watch all the remaining shows & they mostly pretty good-some better than others on some days but jeez-nothing compares to OLTL. For sure OLTL NEVER bored me.
i no, still dont know how they justified cancelling it
GH will probably win!!!
Hoping no one leaves out B&B with their foster care storyline!! That was perfectly done!!!!!
Agree w/you on the B&B storyline but PLEASE let OLTL take it!
Would be good to see OLTL take it. Anyone but GH!
I have 3 soaps for the best drama Nom: 1.) One life to live- in the past years, before it got cancelled. It was getting better and better, with it’s storylines. Especially the Natilie and John and Brody. Story as Long with Rex and bio daddy (Clint). That was a couple of my favorites. 2,) Bold and the Beautiful: ONE WORD: PERFECtION. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT, IS SIMPLY PERFECTION. This soap is the only, soap that travels, around the world. Like ASPEN, CABO MEXICO. And around in California. 3.) GENERAL HOSPITAL: in it’s own way, RAWNESS. OF ANTHONY GEARY in the intervention, was simply PERFECTION. Luke is PERFECTION . So was all of his storylines.
I am so hoping that One Life and AMC clean up at the emmy’s. The idiots in charge of ABC should just sell the network and whoever buys it, should give us back our soaps,
Disney should never have bought abc,I guess disney likes all there new trashy shows ,talk, food ,and self help crap they also want to turn it into a news show to, there goes the afternoon all we need is to watch more news and I am a news junkie ,But I know better then to watch it on abc.I also hope that One life to live wins everything at the emmys, and I hope we get to watch it,so far no one wants to put it on their network.
The fact that Y&R dared to submit anything from the Diane murder mystery disaster–one of the worst things I’ve ever seen on a soap–speaks volumes. Even Cane’s “murder” on the church steps would have been a better submission.
Well said Tom.
Agree.
Don’t know what to say about the Nikki Christmas Episode. MTS was the only thing good about it!
thanks to you tvguide!! oltl !! forevah !!!!!
ABC had something special in One Life to Live, and TPTB didn’t even recognize it (although by the finale, they were just about the only ones who didn’t). And now they don’t recognize the ratings positive press that they would get for bringing it back. So little creativity, so little out-of-the-box thinking, which is kind of ironic considering . . .
Frank ,your right about One life to live.abc/disney showed such disrespect to that classic soap and all the fans that watched it every day.If they put general hospital on at 2 I will watch ,but any other of there dopy shows that go on at the 2 oclock hour I hope it fails miserably in the ratings I will continue to boycott abc/disney.
If they brought back OLTL.. They would have to admit they were WRONG. I don’t think they want to do that…..It would be great to see LANDVIEW AGAIN!!!! And all the people who lived there……………………….I don’t watch Info/reality/cooking shows on daytime . They don’t belong on daytime programming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When you think of daytime programming, you think of THE SOAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s the way it should be…Soap fans don’t like change…We never get tired of our stories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the way it will alway’s be for me & others………….
One Life to Live cannot be brought back. It would cost too much to bring it back. The sets have been destoyed. Its studio is now used by another ABC show. The clothes worn by the actors have been liquidated on Ebay. The actors and crews have moved on to General Hospital and other projects.
The time that is being wasted into trying to revive a show that cannot be revived is a time that could be used instead to support the four remaining soaps which are all in danger of cancellation.
OLTL may never come back to ABC and I suspect it won’t. However Heather there are many networks are showed interest in buying OLTL and AMC and putting them back into production on another network. I beleive when this happens everyone would be happy to go back to Llanview and pick it up where they left off on a brand new network with new stages and new clothes. They would not disappoint their fans who have worked so hard to get them back. It can be done and by September the rights need to be released anyway if they (ABC/D) do not start producing them again or if PP doesn’t. I will not give up on this show and there are millions that aren’t. I believe that OLTL and AMC should win many awards, they should take them all home.
Who showed Interest in OLTl in buying it or AMC?????????Who do you mean??? This is for Terri…….What are you talking about… I haven’t heard anything!!!!!!!!!
Susan M, I think Terri is confusing reality with wishful thinking.
If another network had any interest in these shows as Terri is telling us, Michael Fairman would have reported the story on this site.
AMC and OLTL are never coming back. Not on ABC, not anywhere else. End of story.
OLTL deserves to be nominated! Just proof that ABC made a stupid decision to cancel the best show they had on air!
OLTL deserves to be nominated! Just proof that ABC made a stupid decision to cancel the best show they had on air!
OLTL deserves to win all the stories were the GREATEST….Emotional, heart-warming,exciting,shocking truth, love for one another. The list goes on and on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OLTL should had never been cancelled………………I still feel this way….It was that good…. So much talent on OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has to be the BIG WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the logical chose & the right one…Thhey deserve it hands down……………..If not, I will be very disappointed to say the least……………….OLTL all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am crossing my fingers for good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When exactly will the daytime emmy’s be on??????????? I will be watching for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Susan m , I agree One life to live should never have been canceled, the Emmys will be on sometime in june, still there is no network willing to put them on and we are running out of time ,I agree with you one life to live to win every award.and I hope we can see it happen, this is the last year for all my children and One life to live ,they wont even get a send off ,not even a goodbye.
I can’t understand why no one wants to pick-up OLTL on another cable channel…I know it will not happen… I just can’t understand this one……………There are other shows who cost a quite a bit of money to put on….That’s what all the commericals are for to help pay for it…And there are tons of advertisements!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OLTL all the way to WIN THE DAYTIME EMMY”S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a GH fan al the way. Not that don’t miss AMC & OLTL. Just believe that GH is best soap on the aire now. I Vote for GH. <3
I support general hospital to but this will be the last year all my children and one life to life can compete ,I say one life to live all the way ,best actor, best actress ,best writing ,best soap ever.
I AGREE WITH Barbara t……………………… RIGHT ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With six shows eligible, how many will be nominated? If there are three, I expect GENERAL HOSPITAL, ONE LIFE TO LIVE and THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL to get bids, with ALL MY CHILDREN the spoiler or a fourth nominee. OLTL is my pick to win, not only for sentimental reasons but because it honestly was the most consistently excellent daytime drama in 2011… and it remained strong and compelling and vital as its life ended. If only the judging was based on overall work and not only submitted episodes. B&B’s blessings in recent years is because of the quirk in the judging process, I believe.
I agree with your comments about OLTL..It was the best in my book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh I would love for One Life to Live to Win!! That would be another great feather in their cap, and another obvious giant sharp pointy jab at the dumb jerks at ABC!!!
I agree with you Christy……….OLTL ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, OLTL was still a vital, thriving show. After 43 years! I can’t believe there’s no way to bring it back if they made it a priority. Combine production w/GH, shoot in same studio, share a few characters (Federal Agents Mc Bain and Devane, etc.), continue to explore smart product placement, roll out a subscription model, license characters for novelization, video games, etc), license internationally, leverage social media more effectively, promote during primetime lineup, etc.
They don’t recognize a good soap if it bit them in the butt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It would be so meta if ABC revealed in a twist that OLTL wasn’t dead after all. Think of the press! I might actually start watching ABC again. GH is currently the only ABC show I watch.
Amen !!!
I agree with TVGuide, One Life to Live was wrongly cancelled. Anne Sweeney was wrong. Bob Iger was wrong. And since both of the replacement shows are bombing, I guess that makes the rest of us right. I hope One Life to Live wins the category, then Sweeney and Iger will look like the fools I think they are.
Their all a bunch of JERKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They cancel the good shows & keep on the crappy stupid stuff…………That’s so stupid you wouldn’t want to watch…
OLTL needs to sweep all of the awards!
I agree with comment on 4/26 at 8:17pm…………………You are TOTALLY RIGHT ON THE MARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OLTL ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OLTL deserves the BIG awards. It was far and away the best soap of 2011! And most certainly, ended STILL far and away the best soap out of the remaining soaps:( That said, I hope GH, Y&R, Days & B&B are around for a long time to come.
I cannot agree more OLTL was doing STELLAR work with a cast and crew that were in the zone. It was funny, poignant, compelling tune in soap nothing has or will replace it in my heart but I want the remaining soaps especially GH to live on. OLTL deserves the award this year no question hands down the best!
I think GH’s year will be next year. For there 50th and probably FINAL year.
If we can get those ratings up we may go further then 50 years.
In reading all these comments saying OLTL was the best, which I agree with, presents a burning question in my mind…how can a show that has been cancelled be nominated for an emmy? Doesn’t make sense. If a show is good enough to be nominated, then it shouldn’t be cancelled.
I have watched a lot of different soaps for 48 years. My first love is Another world (gone) so I can say of the 2011 soaps OLTL and AMC with out a doubt.I love all soaps and my heart is in OLTL.I want Disney to know they messed up big time.
Both Frank Valentini AND Ron Carlivati–former exec prod/headwriter of OLTL are now fighting to keep GH on the air. Could this have somthing to do with OLTL’s near shutout?
Also: When voting results are to be announced on a certain date, then that date arrives, and it is announced that no announcement will be made for 5 additional days…in politics, we would … wonder about that, wouldn’t we? Especially when those in control of the voting are desparately seeking a television sponsor for the award show?
