Days Of Our Lives
Which Soap Rang In 2016 With The Best New Year's Eve Episode: GH, DAYS or Y&R?
When your favorite daytime dramas pick back up on Monday, three soaps left viewers with much to ponder as they rang in 2016! General Hospital, Days of our Lives, and The Young and the Restless had New Year’s festivities, and some ended up in dire consequences, and the other renewed romances or the possibilites thereof!
On General Hospital, the show delivered a more tender episode centered around the love stories on the show and the dramatic tension of some possible ones to come! Johnny (Brandon Barash) and Lulu (Emme Rylan) were together in Johnny’s cabin on The Haunted Star at midnight. They clinked champagnes glasses and both entered into quite the smooch! Carly (Laura Wright) and Sonny (Maurice Benard) rang in the New Year with the best possible news: Sonny felt his leg move and the couple kissed in happiness. And it was Patrick (Jason Thompson) and Robin (Kimberly McCullough) who renewed their love for one another with hitting the sheets, and each proposing marriage to the other. Sam (Kelly Monaco) and Jason (Billy Miller) were also together at midnight by circumstances, where they were playing a game of pool, and looked at each other as if they might kiss. Dillon (Robert Palmer Watkins) kissed Valerie (Brytni Sarpy), who told him she wanted to just remain friends.
On Days of our Lives, the long awaited New Years Eve car crash finally happened. I t is now revealed the circumstances that led up to it. Brady (Eric Martsolf) and Daniel (Shawn Christian) were going back to the Kiriakis’ to wait for their gals Nicole (Arianne Zucker) and Theresa (Jen Lilley) who still needed to finish up some business with Kate (Lauren Koslow) at the Basic Black fashion show party. Brady is in the driver’s seat, Daniel in the passenger side. Brady realizes he left the gift Theresa gave him at the club, so they turn around. At that time, a drunk-off-his-rocker Eric (Greg Vaughan), who decided not to wait for a cab to drive him home since it would take an hour, got in his car and drove. Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) was in her car heading that way, because she was just with Abigail (Kate Mansi) learning the news that Chad (Billy Flynn) is the bio-dad of baby Thomas, not Ben (Rob Scott Wilson). Next thing you know, all three cars crash. Elsewhere, Chad and Belle (Martha Madison) were about to have sex, when Abby busted up their liaison with news for Chad! Will she get through to him and his brainwash block?
On The Young and the Restless, Abby (Melissa Ordway) and Ben (Sean Carrigan) said their “I do’s”, but not before Ashley (Eileen Davidson) looses conciousness for a moment and falls to the floor during the vows. Everyone wants her to go the hospital, but she refuses. The wedding continues and Abby and Ben become husband and wife. Later a disraught Ashley goes to the Jabot lab and tears the place up hysterical and in tears. Dr. Neville (Michael E. Knight) finds her and finally gets her to admit she has a brain tumor and is dying. He says let him help her and they will find a cure. She agrees to let him do his research. Meanwhile, as Billy (Burgess Jenkins) has been trying to get to Abby and Stitch’s wedding he is accosted by his gambling debtor. The guy wants his $200,000 now. Billy says he will get to him tomorrow. That’s not acceptable and so a henchmen beats Billy up in the face and leaves him in the parking garage on the floor. Noah (Robert Adamson), who noticed Luca (Miles Gaston Villenueva) and Marissa (Sofia Pernas) kiss decides to leave the New Year’s/Wedding party, and notices his car is boxed in inside the parkting garage. He puts his car in reverse to begin to leave, and acccidently runs into Billy! Later, Marissa finds Billy and calls 911.

Stephen Schnetzer Talks On His Return to Days of our Lives and Working with Susan Seaforth Hayes In Emotional Episodes
Who says you can’t go home again? In the case of Another World favorite, Stephen Schnetzer (ex-Cass Winthrop), he has proven that it is true, and you can go back to your soap roots and where it all started for you.
Last week on April 11th, Schnetzer, along with several other key returns were on set at Days of our Lives taping all-new episodes of the Peacock streaming soap opera, centering on the funeral of Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes), and as part of the iconic soap opera’s 15,000th episode.
Stephen is reprising his first daytime role as Steve Olson, the brother of Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes). The last time Schnetzer appeared on a DAYS set was during his one and only run on the show from 1978 to 1980. Clearly, viewers will be in for some very emotional scenes when Steve returns to Salem to be there for his sister, Julie in her time of need. In real-life, Susan has been going through her own grief, having just lost Bill back on January 12th at the age of 98.
Michael Fairman TV caught up with Stephen during the 15K episode celebration ceremony, and during a break from taping the gut-wrenching funeral scenes, to get his thoughts on being part of these highly-anticipated moments that will air later this year in December. Here’s what he shared with us below.
What has this been like for you to work with Susan Seaforth Hayes after all of these years?
STEPHEN: She’s a dream and she’s so bright. We ran lines yesterday and we ended up just visiting for about 45 minutes and just catching up and telling tales about each other’s career. She even dropped off the autobiography that she and Bill did. And being back here at DAYS, every time I turn a corner, there’s another familiar face. When I was on the show 40 more years ago, a bunch of the guys, played softball on a team together. This is really a trip down memory lane as I knew it would be.
Taping Doug’s funeral must be a hard day for Susan. Are you checking in with her to help hold her up through this?
STEPHEN: I am and I’m checking in with Amy Shaughnessy (Susan’s assistant), and she’s holding her up more than anybody. We’re there for each other.
There will obviously be some major hankie-inducing moments when Steve comes back to Salem to console his sister.
STEPHEN: Oh, wait till you see it in December. It’s going to be great.
Were you surprised you got this call to come back to the show decades later?
STEPHEN: It was out of the blue! I was completely surprised. They should have called me decades ago! That’s what surprised me. When Another World went down, I thought I’d land somewhere else and it never happened. That was more of a surprise.
Cass is such an identifiable character for you. As well, you and Linda Dano (ex-Felicia Gallant) are so synonymous together as best friends Cass and Felicia from Another World. When fans heard you were reprising your role as Steve Olson on DAYS, they are now hoping there will be more of you on the show to come.
STEPHEN: Steven Olson is a real “Cassian “character. I cut my teeth on Steve Olson and that’s how Cass was introduced. He was kind of a roguish charmer. And then when the character stuck for Another World, they rehabilitated me, and turned me into one of the shows heroes. And that’s what would’ve happened if I stayed as Steve Olson probably. So, Steve is the ‘pre-Cass’, Cass.
As the story goes, you originally decided to leave Days of our Lives?
STEPHEN: I was never on contract. I was doing a day and a half a week and I got a Broadway play directed by Franco Zeffirelli starring Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay. I was able to it as I didn’t have to break a contract or anything. I cut loose and went back to New York for that.
How well did you get to know Bill Hayes during your first time around on DAYS?
STEPHEN: My first episode was with Bill and Susan, as her long lost brother coming into Salem. They were so good to me. They were so kind. I had been doing eight years of classical repertory theater, never been in front of a camera. I tell everybody, it took me longer than any other actor I’ve ever seen to get comfortable in front of a camera. And they were very supportive at that time in my career. Coming back to honor Bill now in 2024, and to be see Susan, I am just so happy to be here.
Looking forward to seeing the scenes between Stephen and Susan Seaforth Hayes come December and Doug’s funeral and surrounding episodes? Do you hope that DAYS might bring the character of Steve Olson back for a longer stay? Comment below.

Y&R’s Hayley Erin Previews Her Role in Horror-Thriller ‘New Life’
I hate to say it but Y&R had the best New Years Eve episode…
Re: Y&R. We all know where this is going. Marissa will assume Noah ran over Billy and left the scene. Will she spill to the authorities? Does she even need to? There are evidentiary tire marks, for sure…. AHHH, shucks! How clever and original!
****************************
I would love to see a blossoming romance between Lulu and Johnny. So tired of Dante’s dog hound-eyed face.
***************************
I am not too happy with some of the stuff going on at Days right now. Too much happening all at once. It has been one death after another. Jen in a coma? Why? The only saving grace, for me, is the unfolding revelation of ‘who’s the baby daddy’. Will Abby be able to piece together what happened?….that is, Clyde had a hand in the blood-vial switch?
I said Jen will be in a coma and will see Jack…Mathew A. is making a brief return to the show as Jack so having her in a coma makes some sense to me!…
Ok, Jimmy. I understand that. I had no idea Jack was making an appearance, albeit in her subconscience. Thanks. Later.
They said before his appearance wouldn’t be til spring but who knows!
Thom….didnt know that…thought it would be sooner.
Hi CeeCee!
I would really like a Lulu and Johnny hookup yoo.
but—
I think Brandon is just a short stay, so don’t see them going there..
We have to get Brandon to stay on!
I would like them together too…they are perfect together!
That certainly is a shame, Suzie Q. I figured Brandon was just going to be a nice, warm breeze. Come and gone. I like him so much better than Dante. Luv-ya.
now, that’s something, I DEFINITELY agree, with you, su0000 – “get Brandon to stay on!”
I love love love love that idea.
Speaking of love love love love, Where is LUCY???? I miss her oh oh oh oh oh so much.
Back to Brandon, it would be great if he could at least sign up to GH for one-year, he’s just THAT good. We love to hate Johnny. And, I do see it with Lulu & Johnny. New and old Lulu.
Come back to Port Charles, Lucy. GH, bring Lynn back already!!!
Oops. Sorry. There was no blood-vial switch involved, was there?!. Clyde just threatened the technician with his family’s lives. Niiiice!
first place……………….days of our lives
second place…………..young & the restless
third place……………….general hospital
the funny thing is i have watched gh since the beginning & and it will always be my favorite soap but i have to give credit where credit is due days is the most intriguing….jmo
Loving all of DOOL episodes!
Days of Our Lives all the way! 😉
i never made it to the end of days because i got bored half way thru with the lame fashion show rip off of bold and beautiful. griffith is already boring me with his recycling y n r tenure of chelsea redeeeming her bad attitude as a up coming fashionista now in the form of teresa!
poor eric must ve only made an appearance towrds end of the show because it wasnt end in the first boring half, i would ve watched it for him otherwise!…. again a stupid death occurs to a character who the audience forgot about because we havn t seen them in months… will, now daniel. too bad about greg vaughan , him and nicole were the few super couples on the show worth rooting to be reunited.
unfortunatly y n r had the makings of a great show but imo both shockers felt flat due to poor editing and no classic y n r musical soundtrack in background! ashley s dying ( again…)! billy got beat up and was run over by a clueless noah! again( adam/ dehlia)… …. lacked a punch, even sadder was lauren randomly showing up and leaving out of nowhere and the empty wedding reception, ..y n r really needs to get a budget for scene extras!
correction on my previous post.. the ny eve episode was pre empted in my area.. the lead up eppie was lame. i ll have to go online to catch the drama
How right you are, damien. To paraphrase Leah on the previous Y&R thread, soaps, in general are going through the rinse/repeat cycle, and unimaginative. Case in point….did we not expect Luca to be listening to Marissa’s and Noah’s conversation, and then see them embracing?m So, now Luca has a big fat ‘something’ over Noah’s head; that is, if Luca really heard Noah hit Billy, what better way to get rid of Noah by ratting him out to the police?
In one way, damien, I am sort of glad this happened….it gets Noah front and center. It’s about time he is given a storyline, instead of just being there at his grandfather’s or at everyone else’s disposal.
Johnny kissed Lulu, saw it coming 10 miles away..
That was exciting as toenail clippings..
Sonny saw his leg move and got kissed by his wife..
Saw that coming 10 miles away.
That was exciting as pigeon droppings.
Patrick & Robin’s sex looked like they were shot with a tranquilizer gun before hitting the sheets.
That was exciting as watching sloths mating.
Sam and Jason played pool and almost kissed.
That was exciting as an empty water glass
Dillion and Val are friends..
For a New Year’s Eve… I can only thank God I was not overcome with excitement preventing me from having a WHOOPIE stroke..
GH is horrible!
J&S has gutted GH of everything that made GH..
They have reduced GH to comatose viewing.
If GH doesn’t get some high drama, suspense, intrigue, on the edge suspense, it will die a painful death.
I WANT MY GH BACK!!
Y&R,
at the least put some effort into New Years eve..
Nothing special, nothing exciting, but I did not nod-out, so gotta give it the thumb up..
Personally, I wish had never watched GH or Y&R’s New Year’s eve and Christmas episodes, I now can see into the future of both soaps, and it is sad very sad 🙁
And yet you did watch them and posted your long winded diatribe. .which by the way had me LMAO..OH SUUU
hi davlestev1..
I know!! why did do that lol
I did FF but still I hung in there..
Well, I am a certified GH, that is my excuse lol
(those couples bore me to near comatose, they do nothing, nothing at all..
they don’t even date or share a burger they don’t even get fresh air..
no adventure they just kiss and that is their deal. lol ..
Su…I agree about the couples being boring…to here’s no build up or tension before they kiss and whatever. Well maybe a little between Nik and Hayden. Pretend you’re RC…how would you have spiced up New Years Eve?
“Johnny kissed Lulu”…. YUM!!
heyyyy CeeCee, more to to be seen monday..
You best nail your pants to the bench so you don’t get blown away from the exciting impact of the kiss!
Yup, the smoochie will be the biggie of the week !! ahaa yah sure 🙂
@Su0000, that a wild write-up, I loved it. Now, I know you watch DAYS, too, now, right?
Can you do a write-up for that episode too. I’m WAITING….well, your MF blog fans are all waiting, too, I’m sure. Give us your take on DAYS….if you didn’t watch it, do it, I’m waiting. 🙂
DAYS continually pulls the stupid card. I can’t believe even the writer of this blog drank the DAYS Kool-Aid. The only story worth watching in the last year on DAYS was the necktie killer storyline and that was ruined when in addition to murdering various characters they managed to kill off any semblance of respect for the gay story lines they were writing. The only character who is gay is Paul. And now they are gonna have Paul fall for some woman and realize that “he wasn’t gay, he just thought he was gay”. The show is poorly written, averagely acted and uses the worst plot devices. A car accident to kill off Daniel and put Jen in a coma? So they can foolishly bring in another old actor to moisten the “female lower parts” by bringing back some old character from the old days. How about DAYS just stop shooting current episodes and show the same old episodes with Patch Kayla Bo Hope Jen and Jack and screw the modern stories. They are by FAR the worst soap on air right now. Can we have Eric lose his mouth in the accident so he stops whining and yelling? The Y&R episode was just re-hashing a hit and run episode with a character that has been through the wringer with the death of his daughter now he is going to suffer for another 2 years as he heals from the current hit and run. Chuck Pratt and Jill Firing Phelps are drinking too much vodka lately….and it’s showing. The best show by far was GH with a realistic show that represented a laid back celebration of a holiday. Sonny and Carly moving forward. Lulu self destructing. And Patrick and Robin healing. I think it was classy and well acted.
Y&R and Days almost a photo finish.
B&B
GH a good distance behind. It was ok but far from #1.
I have to say Y&R had the bestNew Year’s show. Money was put into it. I loved everyone looking fancy and Y&R had some cliffhangers. DAYS is too dark for me. Not a fan of all the deaths. GH was really cheesy. What was that college football playoff stuff. By the way B&B is just terrible.
Melissa Reeves
I just do not get the attachment
are we clinging to her character history… because she’s still on the show… for whatever reason?
I truly want her in this coma… vegging out for the duration and tenure of DOOL
Matthew Ashford… will moisten , more than Jennifer.. that’s for sure
she’s an overpaid prop… for JJ and Abs.. and the history of DOOL Horton clan!
her salary could easily go towards Kassie DePaiva
I’d much rather watch Jack Deveraux … as a single father, (widower) from a male point of view…
if not Jack… bring back Jamie Lyn Bauer… she would be the perfect… Horton Lady… who can ACT! and befriend Marlena and Maggie ! and truly lead the Horton .
this 5 day stint of Watching Matthew Ashford angelic mode… over the love of his life?
seriously! with Melissa Reeves’ acting?
argh! this show could be doing all the right things… by getting rid of two of the dullest actors… whose characters where overkilled… prior to this new production team
Daniel and Jenn are united in death
“overpaid prop” – oh man, I laughed too hard!
I can’t argue with a single thing you said, Patrick
And I’m sure this actress must have been ecstatic at the total destruction of ‘the gays’ aspect of Days in 2015.
Oh, my gosh, Patrick. I was so afraid of saying what you said about Jen (Melissa). You said it for me. You know we will get backlash for that….She is a Horton, afterall…LOL.
“Overpaid prop?” Oh, Patrick, that term you just coined is sheer perfection! Although I don’t watch Days, I can certainly attribute that very same label to quite a few GH characters!!!!! Therefore, thank you!….I shall definitely utilize it in the future, and I will make sure to credit you for it!!!! Well done!!!
I liked GH the best, although I find the term “hitting the sheets” to describe Robin and Patrick lovemaking a bit crude. Honestly, no one wonder there is no romance on soaps nowadays when the world has reduce psychical intimacy to the level of dogs humping with such terms as “hitting the sheets’.
Y&R was okay, but nothing to write home about.
I didn’t watch Days because I had zero interest watching them bring in the New Year with more death and destruction. And as much as like dJack and Jen in their day I have no appetite to see another visitation from another “ghost” or “spirit” from beyond telling another character it isn’t their time yet and they are needed at home. Assuming the rumors are true and Jen is going into a coma and will see Jack there.
B&B was a laugh riot. It wasn’t New Year’s but seeing Ivy tumble down the stairs while Steffy watches in horror, just as Liam walks in– that was hilarious. I know Brad didn’t intend it to be, but how many times has Ivy been hurt in the last month because of Steffy directly or indirectly? It is so lame that it was entertaining– at least I got a chuckle out of it, which isn’t a bad way to ring out the old year.
I would have to say #1 Y & R thanks to Adam (Justin Hartley) & Chelsea(Melissa Egan). #2 Bold & Beautiful thanks to the transgender story & the break-up of Caroline & Rick. #3 G.H. Thanks to Carly/Sunny & Jason
YR seemed the most exciting. GH is always my number show, but of the stories on the NY show, I only care about Lulu and Johnny
GH loved Sonny & Carly scenes
Patrick and Robin. Sincere sweet and loving reunited engagement.
Yes!
I know it is doom and gloom but DAYS is top notch right now! My top choice for New Year’s episode!
It was a blast seeing “Downtown” Julie Brown on DAYS New Year’s Eve episode!
GH was the best for ME…I loved Sonny moving his legs.
And all the loving kisses he and Carly shared this NYE!!!
GH
